kind of wild how much fiction still treats torture as something that objectively works when every study has shown that it does not work at all and is possibly the least effective way to get correct information

I was talking with my dad recently & we got on the topic of People Thinking They Can't Do Things, and like, he is at his core a well-intentioned person who genuinely wants the best for others, but he has definitely internalized some harmful ideas a la "anyone can do anything, the only thing stopping them is their own attitude". so I was like. I see where you're coming from, but let me tell you a story.
last year, I worked with 10 year olds- many of whom had never really spent time outdoors- in an outdoor education program where they came to spend a whole week doing shit outside in nature. the top two scariest experiences for these kids were 1) very tall metal tower, and 2) walking outside at night in the dark with no flashlights.
I tried a lot of different things to persuade them all to join me for each experience: I presented it with enthusiasm and passion, I did physical demonstrations and scientific explanations to help them understands how safe it was, I voiced my absolute commitment to their safety, I invited them to brainstorm ways to help each other and themselves feel safe, etc.
generally I always had at least 2-3 kids out of about 10 who opted out, or if they did join me, would spend the entire experience crying and freaking out. when it was over, they would conclude that even though they did not die- or even get hurt- it was so scary that it wasn't worth it and they never wanted to do it again.
then I changed the question I asked. instead of asking them to tell me whether they could do it or couldn't do it, I asked them to raise their hand for one of three options:
You can definitely do this.
It will be hard or scary or uncomfortable, but you can try to do this.
It will definitely be too hard, scary, or uncomfortable, and you cannot or should not try to do this.
suddenly, almost nobody was opting out of these experiences.
they would try, even if they were scared, because they know that being scared didn't necessarily mean that they couldn't do it at all. and more importantly, they knew that if they needed to stop, that was an option; they weren't trapped in their decision to try.
and the real takeaway here, for me, is in the nuance: people need to be able to challenge themselves and to be uncomfortable in order to grow, and people need to be able to opt out in order for opting in to be a safe option.

I'm seeing the same people over and over on my dash so that naturally means I need to follow some new people to spice things up.
If you're a writeblr who writes original fiction about:
queer, poc, and/or disabled characters (especially ownvoices)
particularly aro/ace and neurodivergent where are u at!!!
high fantasy (bonus for dragons and uncommon settings)
vampires (bonus if not romance)
revenge plots
fluid/nuanced/unlabeled relationships and identities
anything asian or eastern-inspired, especially themes like the yinyang and martial arts and taoism
anything that subverts tropes tbh
Reblog this and I'll check you out! I'm a bit picky about what I like on my dash so no guarantees but I'll try to boost some wips/intros and follow new people <3
If you're interested in fairytale retellings, high & urban fantasy, genderless cultures, dragons, vampires, werewolves, and every type of queer in the book you might want to check out my stuff lol

What most people experience: "I feel sexually attracted to this person, but I would like to wait until I know this person better before having sex w/ them"
What demisexuals experience: "I'm not even the slightest bit sexually attracted to anyone until I properly know & bond w/ them"
What most people experience: "I like this person/have a crush, but I would like to know them a bit better before saying yes to a date/calling them my romantic partner"
What demiromantics experience: "I've literally never had a crush on someone I wasn't very close to"
[Sorry to any demi folks if I got it wrong]
Like no its not "Straight people wanting to be special for something everyone experiences", because not everyone experiences it !!! If you think that you're either misunderstanding what it means to be demi or you are demi but haven't realized.
Like I'm not demisexual, I see people all thr time that I'm sexually attracted to & would have sex w/ !!!! I'm not demiromantic, I get crushes all the time on people I'm not close to [& no, it's not me going "Ah I wanna have sex !! This is a crush" I mean seeing someone & being like "Hm I'd like to go on a date w/ them & do non-sexual romantic things w/ then & call them my partner"] !!!!
Demi people are queer. Being queer isn't the oppression Olympics, just cause they don't experience the same oppression for being demi that trans people do for being trans or gay people do for being gay doesn't suddenly make them not queer.

In my experience if youre calling in sick because youre actually too sick to work you should just be completely, brutally, and utterly honest about it on the phone. Because you may not think that theyll accept it as a good enough reason and that youll have to lie and exaggerate like you do for bs call ins but trust me when i say its probably not bs if its putting a grown adult out of commission for the day
This goes doubly so if the reason you cant work is usually considered "embarrassing." Nothing compares to getting asked why you cant come in today, saying "my IBS is flaring up so bad that i havent left my bathroom in an hour" and hearing a brief pause followed by "...do you want to use one of your paid sick days?"
Yeah, none of you are going to question that. What are you gonna do, make me shit myself on the clock? Thats what i thought

Doctors: "Holy shit how did a person not know into come w/ symptoms like this ?!?!"
Other doctors: "This whiny idiot came in telling me X was happening. DOESN'T THE DUMBASS KNOW X HAPPENS TO EVERYONE"
Other doctors: "Yeah yeah yeah ik you're bleeding profusely from your ear but have you considered you're not & your just fat & need to lose weight & that's why you feel bad ? Because of the fat ?"
Other doctors: "You don't actually feel like this you're just a drug seeking freak, go home druggie, I'm not enabling you"
Like yes, TO YOU this may be an obvious "Come to the hospital immediately !!!!" Thing, and maybe even you'll think the patient is dumb for NOT coming in. But you don't know what they've been through.
Maybe they watched a loved one get belittled & denied care who ended up passing from something serious, but no one believed them. Maybe THEY were belittled & denied. Maybe they tried several times to get care & you're the first person to actually believe them. Maybe they have different trauma regarding hospitals/doctors that made them not want to go to the hospital/doctor.
Also, it's their body - most of the time this shit doesn't start off as "AHHHH SEVERE PAIN I MUST GO TO THE HOSPITAL AAAAHHHHH" Sometimes it's subtle so when it gets bad people are just used to it & it's like "Yeah X feels like Y, but it always feels like Y so it must be normal right ?" & since some of your coworkers are condescending assholes, they may not want to risk feeling stupid by going & having one be like "....... Everyone feels that way......"
I do understand it's a crazy difficult job & I do respect doctors & nurses. But a lot of you [either you specifically or your coworkers or even ones at different hospitals] lack empathy or simply the sense to pause & be like "This person is scared & they don't know what's happening & I've gone to med school but they haven't [presumably], so they don't understand why they feel this way & what is/isn't a red flag".
Like listen to disabled people & people who have had this happen. So many of your "Yeah this is a sign they're faking" are things people did while actually being sick/disabled, but because y'all marked it as "An obvious sign of fakers" it took them way longer to get diagnosed [& in some cases, it turned something preventable/manageable into a permanent disability that's way worse than it would've been, or in some cases, death]

Not to tell anyone in a horror story what to do, but:
Forests are normally loud.
They're full of life. There's endless animals that live there. They make noises. Lots of them.
If you ever are in a forest and it's quiet, that's not right. That means something is very wrong. You should probably either be similarly quiet until you can figure out what's going on, or you should get out of there very quickly.

It’s funny when American authors come up with a new European nation so their main character can be a secret royal without the pain of researching a real nation. We should all start doing that with North America, just make up a new state. My protagonist lives in New Utahioshington which is the 51st state and located between Delaware and Maryland
