I used to often think of how fanon might eventually get my characters wrong once I publish my books. Luckily, with two younger sisters who are the entirety of the fandom, I don't need wonder anymore! They already have bad fanon versions of all of my characters! Daliah's become an insufferable hipster. Inkwell is an eminem stan. Cloudstorm (yes the dragon) is an NHL fanatic. Holly Karlsson is obsessed with Hozier. Tiger's emo. I can't do this anymore y'all.
Honestly I could see Polly/Nell being great further down the road. It's an unexpected, unlikely pairing but that works to their benefit. Polly demands very little of Nell and doesn't judge her like all of her peers do at a time when Nell has the weight of the world sitting on her shoulders. Likewise, Nell could use someone outside of her sisters and Rasselas to be able to lean on. This all has the added bonus for Polly of offering an escape from her stuffy lifestyle and pissing her wealthy overbearing parents off to boot.
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
My throat has been killing me (allergy season) and I was like "damn I would kill for some soup rn but just the broth lol" and then I remembered we keep a baggie of beef ramen packets in the kitchen by the spices so guess who's sipping on some tasty tasty hot beef juice babey
For anything else you want to say about the new show Renegade Nell, I'm deeply appreciative for its sartorial gender subversion. I love that we get to see Nell alternate between and at times actively mix codes of feminine and masculine dress AND that the response to this subversion is an equally mixed reaction of acceptance, confusion, and an absolute grab bag of pronouns and descriptors.
Specifically, I enjoy the refusal of limits. Nell's "disguise" as a nobel woman is complete, believable, and well received. Her "disguise" as a doctor is complete, believable, and well received. Her choice to stand before the queen in military dress is accepted at the same time as she retains the feminine social etiquette of curtsying (even as she does so awkwardly). What we are seeing is a complete refusal of easy categorization and that strategy of opacity is so expertly delivered by Louisa Harland and is so very queer.
I'd love to see a deeper investigation into the costuming of this show, its historical referrants, and the queer readings it elicits
sick of hearing about "healing crystals" that "cleanse your mind and body of negative energy" i want to know which rocks can hurt you and fuck up your vibe so bad
