hi guys! you might notice that there aren’t any more designs listed on my redbubble store--this is in protest of redbubble’s recent change to how they take their cut. before this change, redbubble took by default 80% of the retail price of the item in “fees”. they did not give us a breakdown of those fees, but told us it went in part to site hosting and manufacture of the product. you can increase your margin, but doing so increases the final retail price of the item, so many artists don’t, or tshirts start to cost a lot of money. now, redbubble also takes a cut of the artist’s profit at the end of the month--anywhere between 25 and 50%. the percentage shifts based on how much profit the artist makes during that month--the more you make, the smaller of a percent redbubble takes out of your profit margin.

full transparency, in a good month i make about $50 from redbubble. that means i usually generate about $250 worth of sales; $200 goes to redbubble, and i keep the rest. under this new system, if i had an affected account, i would be hit with a $22 fee--meaning that at the end of the day i would only be taking home $28. that’s just over 11% of the original $250.

of course, this only applies to accounts marked with the “standard” tier. i don’t have a standard-tier account; for whatever reason, redbubble marked my account as “premium”. premium (and the higher “pro” tier) don’t pay the new fee. however, nobody knows how or why accounts are marked as premium. redbubble just didn’t tell us! they did tells us that accounts are marked by a machine. it’s unclear if it’s even possible to change tiers, or what you would have to do to qualify to do so.

TL;DR: redbubble added a new fee system that means that many artists on the platform will earn around 10% of the sale price of items from their shop, and didn’t tell anyone why certain artists were chosen or not for these fees.
