A few years back I played in a tabletop game where my character was a platformer character from the Banjo Kazooie Crash Bandicoot Spyro era. Her name is Zylo (like xylophone) and she's the protagonist in a captain planet-styled pro-environment 3d collectathon.

DEAD BEFORE DAWN - A homage to the 2000s and Dawn of the Dead.

Note: The following version I'm writing on is the Uncut (beta) version of the campaign. I will make another post if this appears in the final version.

Film reference: Dead Before Dawn is a custom Left 4 Dead 2 campaign based off the film, Dawn of the Dead (2004). This isn't the same as the 2012 film of the same title (Dead Before Dawn's red logo).

There's various advertisements you'll see throughout the game, especially in the third floors. The third floors for each of the mall's interior is inaccessible to Survivors, but Special Infected players are allowed to roam here.

DAWN DVD - Parody Logo The first image I found reads "Dawn DVD." It's a recall to Dawn of the Dead, but in the form of early 2000s DVD advertisements.

Q: How can we tell if it's the same film version, and not based off the George A. Romero version?

A: For those unfamiliar with this movie, the spoofed logo has the same color palette the movie's cover art has.

DARTH X3 CAR- Darth Brush's cameo

This is a shoutout to one of the campaign's developers, Darth Brusher.

The car is named Darth X3. As for the bottom text, the inscription could be made out to be:

Buy Darth X3 and enjoy the best automobile in the whole world. This car is a one of the (???) (???) which is produced in City of Dawn.

The text repeats after this, but this is the most I could make out of it as the texture itself appears to be small.

CITY OF DAWN: A savety place to live

Here we have one of the buildings that the survivors start out in another beta version of the campaign. The building in the photo is the same townhouse/courthouse(?) that the Survivors start in during the Extended version of Dead Before Dawn.

Not my screenshots. In the Extended version, you start at the Townhouse(?) before proceeding to climb down into the sewers. The finalized version has you start in the garage instead. The Uncut and Extended versions has you start out in an area of the city BEFORE reaching the garage.

In the Uncut version, you start out much further than the Townhouse(?) and the garage.

Q: Why the different daytime settings, and why does it look more rugged?

A: No clue! This could've been an earlier build that got memorialized throughout all versions.

TAKE MUSIC WITH YOU: Sony Ericsson Walkman.

If you're familiar with ye olde Y2K advertisements about music and the Frutiger Aero visuals of old music, you'll have a blast with this one.

Just as this section's title says, "Take music with you," this is one of those advertisements you might see in nostalgic One True Media clips. But wait, it's not! These are Sony Walkman devices!

If we look up "company that has an orange squiggly as the logo," we get...

THE SONY WALKMAN ERA STRIKES!

And the phone featured in the advertisement is a Sony Ericsson Walkman camera phone! Exact model is the W810. Wikipedia article linked for those who love their history.

Now, can we find the exact advertisement in all its splendor? Not YET, but let's take a moment to appreciate the 2000s cheesy advertisements that comes close.

These advertisements aren't the exact same thing as what we find in-game. However, once I'm able to find the source of it - I'll update this post.

Tales of Solana タレスオフソラナ “Finding one’s identity in a ever-changing world RPG”

In the world of Xevis, two races co-exist, the Homon and Ila’Nam tribes. Both have lived separate until 5000 ago, where they began to intermingle. This causes various issues from the tribes differences, leading to several conflicts. Just as events seemed unable to progress beyond turbulent disputes, the sudden appearance of practitioners of otherworldly magic within the populous of both tribes; the Hexen, creating a “third tribe” from both. 300 years have passed since the first Hexen trials, known as the Anti-Hexen Inquisition, brutal campaigns that left many dead and those persecuted living in fear and hiding their abilities. The Church of Seven Divine Faiths, the ones who initiated these witch trials, had taken steps to pull back from such actions in order to lessen tensions among its followers and those outside the Church. In the present day, a fragile and tense peace rules over the world.

Fighting Styles - Each character has a unique play style to use Gerard: Gerard fights with swords and kicks, he is able to switch between two styles that come with unique sets of moves with the press of a button. Isabelle: Isabelle can use her Hexen powers to use spells as traps to surprise enemies and set up for other party members to temporarily empower weapons with that spell’s element. Cian: Cian can switch between using close range attacks that have a chance to stagger enemies and use mid-long range ice and earth spells. Ruby: Ruby uses darkness and lightning spells in conjunction healing to attack and heal allies at the same time, proper timed button presses reduce TP usage by 5-10%. Tharoc: Tharoc can absorb energy from enemies to replenish his TP gauge when attacking with certain artes, he has a 15-20% chance of copying an enemy spell for limited use. Elmas: Elmas can use multiple stances for both offensive and defensive counters, even appearing behind enemies for more attacks. Tania: Tania can combine two different melee artes into new artes dependent on what’s selected, expanding the amount of her attacks.

Factions Church of the Seven Divine Faiths - A religious sect that rose from pious beginnings into a continent spanning decades before the Hexen Trials. The church reveres seven deities that govern the world of Xevis, each corresponding to an element. The church is constantly changing with the times and has many reformations in order to achieve peace throughout the continent, though any progress has been slow due to two factions vying for control. The hardliner Ioahin faction and the more tolerant Aligism faction, both in competition for the past decade with no end in sight.

Aligism Faction Rodolfo: Leader of the Aligism faction, a liger Ila’Nam that believes that church should help guide those in need, not strong arming the people into the Church’s beliefs.

Donovan Wittenberg: A relative of Cian, he means well in doing right in the world but his methods come off as heavy handed. Tania’s mentor is an old friend of Donovan with a semi-friendly rivalry.

Edith Chancey: Tania’s mentor that took her under her wing when she saw some potential in the girl. Kind but firm in her methods, Edith instilled Tania with a sense of justice to do the right thing.

Ioahin Faction Sylvaine Choquet: One of the leaders of the Ioahin faction that commands the a lion’s share of the SDF’s military force. She is strong yet unyielding in her actions, seeking to do whatever is necessary in her agenda.

Dimitri Choquet: An unknown type of Ila’Nam as well as Sylvaine’s husband. No one knows what he looks like under his armor, a man of few words, he commands his men in tactical fashion and has their utmost respect.

Oskar Salgado: Sylvaine and Dimitri’s adopted son, far different from his parents, he notices an odd change in them as of the past few years. He believes something has gone wrong with them and seeks to find the truth behind it.

Hexen - Those that awaken to otherworldly magic outside the known Mana arcane system, coming into existence over three centuries ago and slowly growing in number ever since. Many are born without being able to use normal magic until their formative years, when it initially manifests it can either run out of control or leak out and unknowingly cause destruction. Persecuted and hated for their destructive potential, many are either killed or hide themselves away in fear for their lives. Hexen can be identified by the glowing splotches on their bodies, Homon-types appear in their hair while Ila’Nam-types can appear in many different places.

The Seven Elemental Gods - A group of seven elementals that govern the planet of Xevis, each one represents one elemental that make up the world at large. Undine: Water Gnome: Earth Sylph: Wind Efreet: Fire Rem: Light Shadow: Darkness Lorelei: Sound

Setting Xevis, the world where Tales of Solana takes place, it is orbited by Dion, its only moon. The world is comprised of five continents(Atropa, Innoxia, Metel, Stramon and Ferox) and one large artificial island (Physo). Four major nations reside on three continents (Endor, Aradia, Calcu and Louhi). The artificial island hosts the unrecognized nation of Befana, the other nations refuse to acknowledge it as legitimate country. Two providences (Nicandra and Jaltomata) exist outside the power structure and have more isolationist policies in regards to the other nations. The era of the setting resembles early 20th century (1900s), where industrialization has become the norm with industrial factories. Biplanes fly the skies and motorized vehicles are beginning to show up in cities, waters with steam powered boats and and trains on country spanning railways are frequent ways of travel. A year on Xevis lasts 10 months totaling in 326 days, a week lasts seven days and a day lasts 24.7 hours.

Continents Atropa: The smallest continent on Xevis, the monarchy of Jaltomata rules over the country, having been previously a vassal state of the Nicandra Commonwealth. A tropical paradise that seems to have many people coexist within its boarders. Innoxia: The far eastern continent on Xevis, a harsh land with various mountain ranges on the north and south sides, it is home to the Aradia Empire. Aradia is allied with Nicandra in an uneasy alliance in dealing with Calcu’s recent movements in the past decade. Metel: The second largest continent on Xevis, it has varied climates ranging from tundra, temperate and arid desert. It is ruled by the nation of Calcu a constitutional monarchy that covers 90% of the continent, Physo is sometimes considered an offshoot of the country but Calcu doesn’t acknowledge it as such. Stramon: The largest continent on Xevis, where the nations of Endor and Louhi make dominion. They have a history of antagonism lasting hundreds of years to decide full control of the land, Endor is a technocracy that rules with an iron fist while Louhi is confederation of multiple states. However, corruption runs rampant in the higher echelons of the government. Many fear another conflict between the countries is on the horizon along its boarders on the demilitarized zone. Ferox: A continent of hot sands and tropical savannas, Ferox is known for mining and popular trade with other nations. The Nicandra Commonwealth spans the continent that forbids entry from other nations unless it pertains to trade, even then outsiders are strictly monitored when inside the country. Physo: An artificial island that was created by Calcu before being abandoned when it was 85% complete for unknown reasons. Many Hexen have flocked to this island as refuge from the world, although nature has reclaimed the island, structures can still be seen underneath the foliage and the people are shown to be thriving just fine.
