The Olive Branch

I’m not the only one who thought Zulius and Splendib’s reconciliation at the beginning of “The Hootenanny” felt a little forced and out of the blue, right? However, since the episode prior to that one didn’t focus on the main characters, it did allow some room for imagining all sorts of scenarios that could’ve happened while Rider and Becky Apples snuck into the Nowhere King’s castle. So this is what I imagined happened during that time which led to Zulius and Splendib’s reconciliation

At first I thought about incorporating this as a sort of epilogue at the end of “An Alley, a Top Hat and Pearls for Days”, but in the end I just settled for making it a separate one-shot. In any case, it does refer to some of the aforementioned story (specifically events from chapter 10), so if you haven’t read it, it might be a bit confusing

Fun fact: I wrote this right after posting chapter 2 of “An Alley, a Top Hat and Pearls for Days” ‘cause this idea came at me with such force that I needed to write it down before I forgot LOL

The sun began to set behind the grassy hills of Centaurworld, putting an end to another busy day of planning for the impending war and the upcoming hootenanny. The herd was abuzz with nervous energy, especially for the event that would be held the following day. They each had their own unique ideas for the hootenanny, although Horse was more preoccupied about the fact that the Nowhere King and his army of minotaurs could strike at any minute. As riled up as the warhorse and the five centaurs were, they also needed their rest, so Wammawink urged them all to call it a day and they all settled in to get some sleep.

Zulius took his time with his night routine, his head swimming with his own personal ideas for the hootenanny. The inside of his tent was getting darker by the second, his only light source being his light-up aromatherapy diffuser. He made a mental note about incorporating cheese bombs in the event — they were essential, obviously — as he snuggled against his goosetaur feather pillow and pulled his sleep mask over his eyes.

He had just released a content sigh through his nose, his aching body finally relaxing after another arduous day, when the ground beneath him began to shake and he heard what sounded like a ripping noise very close to him. Curiosity getting the best of him, he lifted his mask up to his forehead and yelped when he saw a moletaur standing in front of him.

“Comfortable Doug?!” he exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”

“I have traversed the land with the purpose of delivering you a very important message.” he replied in his usual thick accent.

“What could be so important that justifies interrupting my beauty sleep and ripping a hole in my tent?” Zulius deadpanned, cocking a brow at the sweaty centaur.

“I assure you it is of great importance. As for your tent, I can easily compensate you for the damage, as I have recently struck a deal with a modeling agency.”

As confused and appalled as that statement made him feel, Zulius chose to let it go for the time being, or else they would be there all night.

“Fine.” he sighed in exasperation. “Who’s the message from?”

“I was given this message by the one they call ‘Splendib’, who lives all the way back in Cataur Valley.” Comfortable Doug stated as he pulled an envelope from behind his back.

“Splendib?!” Zulius exclaimed in indignation. “Yeah, you can just take that back to where it came from. I want nothing to do with the likes of him.”

“I am afraid that is not an option. I was given clear instructions to make sure you read this message at all costs and to not leave until you have done so.”

The moletaur’s stare seemed to pierce right through his very soul — which was impressive, considering he didn’t have eyes. His vacant expression sent shivers down Zulius’ spine, making him feel even more uncomfortable than he had been before.

“OK, fine, I’ll read it!” he stated after a moment of silence, extending a hand in his direction. “Give it here.”

Comfortable Doug handed him the envelope, which was soggy and dripping with sweat, no doubt from hours of lying somewhere against the moletaur’s body. Zulius made a disgusted face and took hold of it with the tips of his thumb and index finger. He made quick work of ripping and discarding the envelope. The contents were dry, much to his relief. He unfolded the paper and began reading whatever it was Splendib had to say. He was halfway through the first line when Comfortable Doug interrupted him.

“Would you mind reading it out loud?”

“Seriously?”

“Hey man, I dug through half the planet to bring you this. The least you could do is give me a taste.”

“Fine…” Zulius groaned and rolled his eyes.

He straightened the letter as best as he could and cleared his throat.

“‘Dear Zulius, I hope this letter finds you well. I know you probably want nothing to do with me after all the rotten things I’ve done to you in the past, but I hope you will allow me at least five minutes of your busy schedule to read what I have to say. I promise it’ll be well worth your time.’”

Zulius peeked through the top of the page at Comfortable Doug, who seemed to be hanging on his every word.

“‘After your friend Horse came to Cattaur Valley to recruit us to fight in the war, I had a lot to think about. Not only about the war itself, but about…’” Zulius paused to reread the following word several times and make sure it was really there. “‘...us’?!”

Comfortable Doug gasped loudly.

“Oh my, the tea!” the moletaur exclaimed.

“‘It makes no sense to hold such a petty grudge with such a horrible threat lurking and waiting to strike.’” he continued. “‘I know my behavior hasn’t been the best. My actions were truly reprehensible. I am truly sorry for all the pain I’ve caused you. Consider this letter to be my official apology and a proverbial olive branch. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me for all the pain I put you through and that we can start over a new leaf.’”

“That is so nice of him.” Comfortable Doug commented.

“‘To prove to you that I really mean all this, I’m returning your Glitter Cats.’”

Zulius lowered the letter and made a quizzical face at Comfortable Doug.

“Oh, right. I knew I was forgetting something.” he said as he pulled himself out of the hole and looked inside. “You can come out now, ladies.”

Kale and Shar rapidly climbed out of the whole and flopped onto the floor, panting loudly.

“So… stuffy…” the Glitter Cats gasped in unison.

“Kale. Shar.” Zulius acknowledged them.

“Durpleton!” Durpleton was heard exclaiming in the distance.

Zulius rolled his eyes and resumed reading.

“‘I know this doesn’t even begin to make up for all the nasty things I did, but I hope you’ll see it as a gesture that proves I am willing to change. If you’ll allow me, I would like to give this another chance. Best wishes, Splenjamin ‘Splendib’ Dibbersen.’”

“Ooh, he signed his real name and not just his stage name! That’s how you know he means business.” stated Comfortable Doug.

“Yes, thank you, Comfortable Doug.” Zulius replied sarcastically.

Despite the message having come to an end, there was still some more text under Splendib’s signature; a sentence which Zulius did not dare read aloud and which made him blush profusely.

‘PS: I meant what I told you all those years ago — you’re the most talented performer I know. And the most handsome, too ;)’

He was just glad he was still holding the page in front of his face, or else Comfortable Doug would’ve been able to see just how flustered he was.

“Are you done? Can I go back and tell him you’re on board with this whole thing?” asked Comfortable Doug.

“Yeah, yeah, sure.” Zulius stammered, trying his best to collect himself. “Tell him that, if he’s really serious about it, I’m willing to give him another chance. Maybe.”

“Very well.” Comfortable Doug said as he began to climb back into the hole.

“Oh and, hum… Tell him to drop by the hootenanny, tomorrow. If he has time.” Zulius added, nervously twirling his index finger into his mane.

“Got it. Comfortable Doug is off to fulfill his duties as messenger pigeon once more.” Comfortable Doug declared before disappearing into the hole.

Zulius was smiling harder than he expected, his heart doing somersaults inside his chest. Splendid had been responsible for some of the worst moments of his life, but the fact that he was taking the first step by apologizing and wanting to give their relationship another try was very responsible and mature of him. He had never heard such a heartfelt apology from the tigertaur; he had never heard any apology come from him, not even back when they first reunited in Cataur Valley. Zulius never expected him to grow past his petty ways, so this was… refreshing.

He was ripped from his musings when one of the Glitter Cats coughed. He had completely forgotten they were there.

“Oh, right. You two.” he sighed. “I guess you can spend the night.”

Kale and Shar thanked him and settled into one of the far corners of the tent, curling together before falling asleep. Zulius leaned back against his pillow and pulled on his sleep mask, his heart still beating rapidly. He would never admit it to anyone, but he really hoped to see Splendib at the hootenanny tomorrow.

For the first time since he could remember, Zulius fell asleep with a smile on his face.

Giggle fit

This is a tickle fic! Don't like it, keep scrolling.

Ship: Zulius x Splendib (stripes on stripes)

Spoilers if you're still watching!

It had been a while since the war, and Centaurworld had returned to the way it was. Zulius and Splendib had gotten together and were resting in the shade of a large tree just outside of Cat Valley.

Zulius was laying in the grass with his human half sitting up, of course looking at his reflection in the nearby pond. While he was fixing his hair, Splendib was curled next to him, wrapping his own tail around Zulius'.

The Zebrataur smiled and sat up more to face Splendib to say something, when he suddenly felt his lips tug into a wider smile than he had intended, as well as giggles bubbling up from his chest. Splendib had started to trace his fingers over Zulius' stripes, which was actually pretty ticklish. "Wait, dohon't-" he giggled, trying to lean away. But the tiger had caught on, and Zulius could feel the chaotic energy radiating from him.

He tried to jump up to escape, but the moment he felt fingers spider across the area where his human back met his zebra back, he fell back down, giggling loudly. "Splehehehehahaha! Stahahahahap!"

Splendib smirked and stopped immediately. "Alright then. I'm done." He said, knowing full well how Zulius would react.

Zulius huffed and crossed his arms, pouting a little at the sudden lack of attention and affection. He huffed louder, trying to get his tiger's attention again, but Splendib simply ignored him.

Being the drama queen he is, Zulius leaned into Splendib's side, gently smacking his back with his tail, muttering something. Unable to hide his smugness, Splendib asked, "What was that? I didn't hear you, love~" "Wh- Don't make me repeat myseeeeeelf!" Zulius flopped himself dramatically over Splendib's front paws.

"I can't help you, if you don't communicate, remember what Wammawink said about communication and honesty~?" He chuckled. Zulius crossed his arms again. "Don't you dare use Wammawink against me like that. The audacity alone is insulting."

When Splendib simply returned his attention to the water instead of him, Zulius huffed and covered his face. "Can y-... You... didn't have to stop. Just give me the attention I clearly deseEERVE-" He shot his arms down, looking away when he felt Splendib gently pinch down his human sides.

A bright red blush flushed across his face and over his cheeks. Splendib pinched down his sides, and skittered his fingers across where the zebra half met the human half (something he knew Zulius couldn't stand), and tickled across his zebra tummy.

Once he got to the zebra tummy it was all over for Zulius. He laughed loudly and kicked his hooves in the air, trying to roll away, which Splendib didn't allow by using his front paws to hold him in place.

"NOHOHOHAHAHA! SPLEHEHEHEHEHEN- HEHEHEHE STAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" He squealed and playfully pushed at Splendib's face.

The whole time the tiger sat there, just smiling. Anytime be saw that smile or heard him giggle, it was like falling in love again. It always made him happy to see Zulius happy.

That was, until he got a hoof to the face.

"OOF- ohow!" he let Zulius up, chuckling a little. The zebra shot up, also giggling. "S-Sohohorry! I didn't mehean to!"

Of course Splendib wasn't truly injured, he had a higher pain tolerance, plus the kick wasn't super hard.

He growled playfully and pulled Zulius close again. Knowing what that particular growl meant, Zulius started giggling in anticipation. "Wait wait wahahait! It was an ahahaccident!"

Splendib leaned down and blew a raspberry against his side, shaking his head from side to side making it tickle more. His beard made things twice as bad.

Zulius lost it. "AAA STAAHAHAHAHAP NOHOHOHOHO! DIHIHIHIHIBS!" He squirmed and kicked, tail flicking from side to side wildly.

Finally Splendib stopped and just held the poor giggly zebra. Zulius layed there just giggling from the left over tickles. Once he finally calmed down and looked up at his boyf- he burst out giggling again.

Zulius was one of those people who can't stop laughing once already thrown into a giggle fit. Everyone he tried to calm down and make eye contact, he'd just wheeze and start laughing again.

"STAHAP!"

"I'm literally not doing anything."

"Dihihibs!"

"Zuli, I am not even touching you."

"You're loohookin' at me!"

Splendib rolled his eyes fondly and draped a heavy paw back over Zulius, just laying there and enjoying the giggle fit.

Chapter 11

Zulius awoke the next morning feeling like he had been crushed by the coziest avalanche ever. There was a weird weight pressing down on his chest. Oddly enough, it wasn’t unpleasant. In fact, whatever was on him was warm, fuzzy and admittedly very comfortable — like the world’s softest weighted blanket. He tried to shift his limbs but found himself incapacitated by whatever or whomever was weighing him down.

When he was suddenly reminded of the events of the previous night, it didn’t take him too long to realize the compromising position he had gotten himself into.

He struggled to open his eyes, his eyelids feeling they had been turned to lead. A low moan escaped his lips as he gazed to the side and saw the mess of blankets and limbs in which he was tangled. His heart skipped a beat once he noticed Splendib laying next to him. The tigertaur had his right arm and right foreleg over him, which explained why he could barely move. Their bare chests were pressed together in a way that allowed Zulius to feel Splendib’s heartbeat — slow and steady.

His cheeks grew warm as bits and pieces from the previous night flashed in his mind. At first he felt embarrassed about allowing himself to do something so… promiscuous, but that feeling quickly subsided and was replaced by giddiness. He had never done anything so naughty before in his life, and as weird as that sounded, it excited him. He could barely contain the grin that spread across his face. He had never felt so alive!

Glancing at the tigertaur sleeping soundly next to him, he could hardly believe that he had once been his biggest enemy. In a matter of months his perception of him suffered a complete one-eighty and now he considered him the complete opposite of an enemy. Although he still wasn’t sure what they were after last night’s events — Boyfriends? Lovers? Friends with benefits? — he was glad they were now in each other’s lives in such a significant way.

He felt a soft vibration as Splendib released a low groan. The tigertaur stretched all six of his limbs and yawned, his sharp teeth coming into full view. An excited shiver coursed through Zulius’ body as he remembered all the new sensations those pointy canines had introduced him to the previous night. He was sure his neck was riddled with bite marks, but it was nothing a little makeup couldn’t cover.

Splendib’s gaze fell on him as soon as he opened his eyes. The tigertaur lifted his head and rested it on his hand, his lips curling into a sly smile. Zulius didn’t know whether to be jealous or impressed about how good he looked for someone who had literally just woken up.

“Hey, you.” Splendib purred, his tone low and seductive.

“Morning.” said Zulius, his own tone a bit hoarse.

“How did you sleep?”

“I think the right question here is how much did I sleep.” Zulius teased, rolling onto his side now that his body was finally free from the weight of the tigertaur’s limbs. “And I’m pretty sure you know the answer.”

“Can you blame me? Just look at you.” Splendib retorted, his gaze surveying the zebrataur’s body from top to bottom.

“Touché.” Zulius laughed. “You’re not so bad yourself, mister.”

“Why, thank you. I have been working out.”

“It shows.” Zulius moved closer, his gaze locked on Splendib’s as he ran his index finger over the tigertaur’s bare chest. “That strong bod of yours really did a number on me last night.”

“You say that like you didn’t enjoy it.” Splendib inched his face towards Zulius’, stopping mere inches away.

“That could not be farther from the truth.” Zulius said almost breathlessly.

“Zulius, the driver wanted me to tell you that —”

Zulius screeched at the top of lungs, reflexively jolting upwards and pulling one of the blankets over his chest. Samanthera stood at the doorway, the doorknob gripped tightly in her hand and her gaze darting back and forth between him and Splendib. Her initial expression of surprise was quickly replaced by one of annoyance. Even though she didn’t utter a word, he could almost hear her sigh and grumble ‘of course’.

“Ever heard of knocking?!” he exclaimed, glaring daggers at the lemurtaur for barging into the room unannounced.

“Sorry. I just wanted to let you know that we’ll be arriving at Cataur Valley soon.” she replied, utterly unfazed.

“Thank you, Samanthera.” said Splendib as he pushed himself up into a sitting position. “We’ll be right out.”

She didn’t bother to reply to his statement, simply shrugging and leaving the room. Zulius released an exasperated groan as soon as she shut the door behind her.

“Flonk, this is definitely not how I wanted to start the day.” he complained, running his hands over his face.

“You have to take the bitter with the sweet.” Splendib commented as he slid off the bed. “Let’s get something to eat. We won’t have the strength to greet our fans on an empty stomach.”

Zulius couldn’t help but pout at the sudden lack of company and warmth pressing against him. While it was true that his stomach was begging for sustenance, he was hoping they could stay in bed together a bit longer, chatting and cuddling until they arrived at their destination. He already missed the feeling of Splendib’s plump body laying next to him.

The tigertaur clearly noticed his disappointment. He released a low snigger and leaned forward, giving Zulius’ lips a quick peck. The kiss was painfully brief, but enough to send his heart aflutter.

“To be continued.” Splendib whispered in a tone that gave Zulius goosebumps.

He gave the zebrataur a wink before exiting the room, leaving him speechless and in a deeply flustered state. Ten years later, Splendib was still an expert at toying with his emotions, although now it was in a completely different way — a much more significant, adult way.

Once they arrived at Cataur Valley, Zulius and Splendib were instantly swarmed by a large crowd of enthusiastic cataurs, who had gathered in the town square to see them the second their bus pulled up. They barely had time to finish attending to all of their fans before the competition started and they had to rush to the arena. The challenges were a breeze, just as Zulius remembered. He and Splendib blew away their competition by aceing each and every challenge thrown their way like it was nobody’s business. Now more than ever, Zulius was beyond certain that he and Splendib were the ultimate unbeatable duo. Perhaps he would even go as far as calling them a match made in heaven; not that he would ever tell anyone.

As the challenge portion of the competition came to a conclusion and intermission rolled around, Zulius and Splendib retreated to their dressing room to quickly rehearse their new number one final time, just to make sure there would be no hiccups while they were performing.

“Are you sure the splits are absolutely necessary?” asked Splendib as he struggled to stretch his hindlegs.

“Of course! It’s what’ll give our number a whopping dose of wow factor.”

He demonstrated this fact by effortlessly extending his hindlegs in opposite directions and sinking onto the floor. He crossed his arms and grinned victoriously while Splendib stared at him with wide eyes.

“OK, that was hot.” Splendib commented, his gaze glued to the zebrataur’s thighs.

“Excuse me, fellas.” Samanthera called out as she poked her head inside the room and knocked on the door frame. “Just wanted to let you know that you’ll be on in an hour, right after the singing lumberjack.”

“Perfect. Thank you, Samanthera.” Splendib beamed.

The lemurtaur stole a glance in Zulius’ direction. Her eyes exuded sadness and regret, begging him to reconsider the decision he had made the previous night. He simply humphed and turned his head in the opposite direction, refusing to cave to her emotional blackmail. He was still very disappointed with her, even though deep down he felt a pang in his heart for turning away his childhood friend. Nevertheless, he remained set in his ways and refused to give in.

From the corner of his eye, he saw Samanthera disappear behind the door frame. A fresh wave of regret washed over him, but he just shook it off and focused on the task at hand: winning the Be Best Competition with his new and improved act.

“I’m going to inspect the venue and see if it’s up to our standards.” Splendib declared as he began heading towards the door.

“Yeah, you do that. I’m going to take a quick power nap to restore my energy.” said Zulius, pushing himself off the floor.

“Right before a show? Is that a good idea? What if you don’t wake up?”

“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it. I’ve done this plenty of times before and I’ve never overslept. Besides…” he flopped down on the couch, resting his head on the plush inside arm and gazing sultrily at the tigertaur. “...I wouldn’t really need a nap if someone hadn’t kept me up all night, wouldn’t I?”

“You make a fair point there, thunder thighs.” Splendib teased.

Zulius gasped playfully and tossed a throw pillow at the tigertaur. Splendib laughed and waved at the zebrataur before leaving the room and closing the door behind him. Zulius fluffed another throw pillow and slipped it under his head, preparing himself for a quick snooze before another mind-blowing performance.

When Splendib exited the bus, he ran into a couple of cataurs who immediately lit up upon seeing him. He signed a few autographs for them and they scurried away happily, no doubt eager to tell their friends about it and rub Splendib’s signature in their faces. As soon as his fans disappeared, the permanent smile adorning Splendib’s face fell and was replaced by a mournful frown. Glancing down at his paws, he unsheathed his claws and wiggled his toes, watching the sharp appendages gleam under the sunlight. He looked back at the door from where he had just exited and released a long sigh, already regretting his next move.

His head snapped back upwards when he heard a pair of familiar voices drawing near, his smile returning when he saw Kale and Shar approaching. He quickly retracted his claws before walking up to the Glitter Cats.

“Ladies! Just the duo I wanted to see.” he said, placing a hand on each of their shoulders. “I have a proposition for you. One that will make us all very happy.”
