zeus: fine. just one though.
percy: *creates waves hundreds of feet tall, summons a hurricane, splits a glacier in half, and drowns an entire army of monsters without even hesitating*

i don’t think the big three kids are actually banned from teaming up during capture the flag. i think the stipulation is that they have to take the kids. so it’s like all the brightest and best fighters and most skilled members of camp, including those who have like. made even one plan in their lives, vs. ninety newly armed children who have been fed a breakfast of gushers in orange soda corralled by the most powerful and most impulsive demigods to ever live

The gods need to play Dungeons and Dragons with the demigods at least one time. Percy, Grover and Annabeth work together tirelessly to create the most elaborate plot line for the Campaign that they could possibly think up and co-host as the Dungeon Masters.
Maybe they act upon this plan on the Winter Solstice as their 'Presentation'. They won't say what their presentation is about, only that the gods need to play DnD and they will understand. But really... now the Celestial Trio have become the fates. Now the demigods get to throw quests at the gods.
Things get highly unstable on Olympus during that Campaign.
Nobody will ever recover.
DnD probably gets banned.

I watched the new Percy Jackson show and then I reread The Lightning Thief, and my takeaway is…Rick Riordan did some sort of bizarre reversal of the usual adaptation devil’s deal on this one, wherein the key themes of the book are maintained—hell, key themes of the book are amped up and forefronted! The books slowly escalate, not just in the original PJO books but from series to series through Heroes of Olympus and the Apollo books, the idea that this mythological family is fucked up, the parents are doing badly and they need to fix their shit instead of just putting it on the kids. Whereas the show is saying this from day 1! The show also captures the true friendship, the uncomfortable justification of Luke’s choices, the heroes’ sense of otherness from humanity…
But at the cost of so much of the zing of the books? The humor, the absurdist snaps between fantasy and reality like the Minotaur wearing Fruit-of-the-Looms, or the unending quips from Percy that aren’t just rebellious snark, they’re funny. (“…I am the Mother of Monsters, Echidna!” “You mean the thing from Australia??”) And the drama, the fantasy, the mythological stakes—in addition to the total lack of nighttime lighting, I spent half the show thinking everything should be 20% more color-saturated, at least when they’re in Camp Half-Blood or actively fighting monsters, and rereading the book tells me that I was right. Throughout the books, there’s a mounting thunderstorm all across the country, as warning and ambiance of the coming war! Percy only has 1 dream that’s just darkness and a voice; the others include him watching a golden eagle and a giant white horse fighting viciously on a beach! And every god stands out vividly, whereas in the show they mostly come off as Some Guy. In the book, Hades, Zeus and Poseidon are all 10 feet tall (until Poseidon shrinks to tall to Percy), and even Ares is,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
vs this? This was the best they could do??
Tumblr media
He’s not even throwing fireballs at cops and innocent bystanders in order to make them back the fuck off from his fight with this 12yo. SMH. This is bargain-brand. It’s like they didn’t have the budget for special effects and they didn’t even try.
I guess, as devil’s deals go, I would rather have the themes intact. But damn I wish they’d at least upped the color saturation, and maybe the speed of dialogue. These kids SHOULD spend half their conversations snarking like it’s Avengers (2012) actually. The perfect adaptation remains elusive, until we get both the crushing weight of familial trauma AND epic heroes and villains being fun.

I’ve seen a lot of people talking about the contrast of parenting styles of Poseidon saving Percy in episode 4 vs Athena punishing and abandoning Annabeth
But what about the contrast of Poseidon saving Percy vs Zeus pity turning Thalia into a tree after she’s basically at death’s door. Poseidon actively used his power to intervene and save Percy by snatching him out of the air and immersing him in water to heal, while also revealing to him that he has even more powers than he knew before. And this is still in week ONE of Percy’s life as a demigod.
Meanwhile, Thalia knew she what she was, for what I suspect was a while. She didn’t seem to ever have help from her father, and was left to the figurative wolves up until basically the end. And when it looked like moments before the fates were going to cut her string, Zeus (instead of idk striking down the last of the monsters threatening his daughter or ordering one of the other gods to help heal her because he’s their king) turns her into a tree.
Zeus throws his pity on Thalia as almost an afterthought, when almost doesn’t even matter anymore. Meanwhile Poseidon was basically fed up and said imma help my kid because even though I haven’t been allowed to be anywhere near him, let alone acknowledge him, I still love him and don’t want him to die.
…although Athena can go rot bc Annabeth is the best child you’ve had in a good darn while… and you were gonna have her ripped to shreds bc she was in the project group??? Do not pass Go and do not collect $200. Straight to jail with you.

I've seen multiple posts about how Percy and Annabeth both giving up immortality for each other. Percy when he was offered godhood, and Annabeth when she didn't join the hunters.
For a long time this has bothered me, and I only just realized why. Annabeth was never offered a spot on the hunters, really. From the framing, it seems like it's just an option open. They have brochures. They mention it to Bianca like five seconds after she's met the hunters. Reyna volunteers later. It is one of many choices a young, demigoddess has about what her future might be.
It also isn't really a permanent state. In universe, and also from some things Rick has said, you have pretty much an open option to leave, and as long as you give a heads up Artemis is happy to let you go and live your best life and give you a magic house. While they are also not really immortal. They are offered eternal youth, but are very capable of being killed in battle.
And the implication is that as long as a girl is a maiden (not sure what the bounds of that are, don't care) that choice is still open. So Annabeth doesn't actually 'give up' that option until she has sex. And it is an option presumably many other demigoddesses will eventually give up. (Rick Riordan introduced a giant plot hole in TON to avoid the implication that Percy and Annabeth would have sex. So it is totally within the bounds of the narrative as of the furthest point in canon, for Annabeth to still be able to drop it all and join.)
In the narrative the Hunters and Amazons are put in parallel. And though we are given the explicit differences (avoidance of men vs dominance over them. Eternal youth vs growing up) they are both basically just priestesses of a particular god who come and go by choice.
That just isn't comparable to Percy being offered full godhood. Not the hunters eternal youth unless they die in battle, but literal godhood. It's a one time, unique offer. Everyone makes a big deal out of it, and no one else has the offer within the series. And as we see in CotG, even people who did get turned into gods and hate it can't really back out. (It isn't clear if its because Zeus won't let him, or because as a miserable being of immense power, going back to being human just doesn't have an appeal.)
To become a god is to become something fundamentally different then a human and a demigod. And it just isn't like that for the hunters. As time moves on, presumably, the relationship between Thalia and her friends is going to get more and more strange and distant. But in the immediate, they are still the same thing, on different paths.
From a storytelling perspective, it isn't that there are no parallels, the narrations explicitly draws you from one to the other. But from a meta perspective, it just isn't the same at all.

Richard saying, "we're going to end up in the same place, it doesn't matter how we get there" pissed me off so much ISN'T "HOW WE GET THERE" THE ENTIRE POINT OF STORIES?! ISN'T THAT WHY THE ENTIRE DAMN BOOK EXISTS?!
So, shocker, I have Thoughts about this post of his. My knee jerk reaction when I saw it last night was an eye roll and an urge to rant, which I kept contained because I'd already ranted and we gotta space that stuff out from time-to-time.
And now that I have had a full night's sleep and I am slightly less cranky, I'm gonna have to go on record and... DEFEND part of his logic, gasp.
For those not in the know, RR wrotes this reply to question on Threads (lol) a few days ago about changes to the plot in the sixth episode that apparently bugged a lot of people:
Tumblr media
And like, I'm deeply annoyed about the "it won't change anything" bit because OH MY GOD STORYTELLING which is a whole other thing but I do have something to say about the man's logic and the difference in the show premise vs the books that I think is flying over a lot of people's heads.
The plot of the show is Percy saving Sally and doing a quest along the way. Sally and Percy's relationship is the A plot, the mythology and conflict among the gods is the B plot. Percy knows from 1x02 that his mom is alive and that changes his priorities immediately; we see him start to care about the overall quest and his place in the world in 1x05, but he's still pushing forward because of his mom. You have to add another pearl to pay off that A storyline, to promise audience members that Percy is going to succeed until he doesn't.
Percy in the books has a feeling his mom is alive or that he can get her back from the Underworld, but doesn't know for sure. The quest and the setting up the overall Big Three backstory is the main plot of the books and what we the readers are focused on. I wouldn't even put saving Sally as a B or C plot in the original TLT. Percy doesn't get confirmation that she's alive until they're down in the Underworld and Hades reveals he took her for leverage, so then only having three pearls becomes a brief but important conflict.
This is where we're seeing a lot of the issues with the show's plot come to a head. It's fine to change the priority of the story from returning the bolt to saving Sally, because it delivers the same result in the end anyway, like Rick says. But you have to bulk up other parts of the script in a way to make up for it and the show has not delivered on that part. (See exhibit A: my rant about any lack of mystery with the monsters.)
I think the most egregious change that he says doesn't matter is the trio missing the deadline. In the books, we're told that natural disasters and weird things have been happening since the bolt disappeared as Zeus and Poseidon fought, and stuff was getting worse the closer the deadline came. We are briefly shown this in 1x05 with Ares and in 1x06 with Luke saying things are "bad" at camp, but imo, it doesn't feel super heavy. The consequences of missing the deadline is that gods go to war and bad shit happens! Lots of mortals are gonna die! Doesn't that matter?
The show could've stepped outside of the Percy and Sally storyline for little bit to give more of a perspective about what was happening at camp or the outside world to bring that weight - you're not limited to just Percy's POV storyline in the medium of a TV show! (Of course, we can step outside of it to give a LMM cameo/stinger because priorities but I digress.)
They didn't and I'm not sure how they're going to "solve" Zeus's response to Percy missing the deadline 'cause like... this is the unreasonable king of the gods that Rick has started yet another series based on the premise of him being a petty bitch who wants to ruin Percy's life. Is the guy gonna walk back starting a war? Is he waiting to start because Poseidon asked nicely? What's the consequence to the world going to be? Clearly nothing, since Rick said the story is going to end how it was always going to end, which is just poor storytelling.

Can we talk about how great the Percy vs Zeus scene was?
Because it shows clearly how much Zeus runs in pure ego and overconfidence. When Percy tells him about Kronos, he does not care because that happened before and it didn't end well for Kronos but it ended greatly for him. So, why should it be different this time?
But when Percy tells him that Ares already betrayed him, that the moment someone more terrifying than him showed up, his own son turned his back at him... You can see the facade break and he is actually worried (kudos to the amazing Lance Reddick for this, you will be greatly missed and your were a fantastic Zeus).
He is powerful, yes, but he can't beat Kronos if his family turns on him. And Percy reminds him of that, of how much of the loyalty to him comes from fear and not actual devotion. Percy reminds him that fear can be overcomed easily when there is something greater to be afraid of.
No wonder Zeus wanted to blast him right there, my boy was hitting all the nails right in the head.

The fact that Nico somehow has connections to unexpected parts of the mythological world and is widely appreciated by their members, thus making his existence essential and favorable implies that - in the event that I want to start a civil war among the (godly or not) factions - I can just kill him and let someone else take the blame.
Surely the consequences wouldn’t be pretty. I should be guaranteed at least a Hades vs Zeus fight that leads to the sky falling down and the earth crumbling and maybe finally an Alabaster vs Percy match or perhaps Alabaster vs Hazel if I play my cards right. And if I can just put Bob and the trogs in the equation, I can make a feast on Mt. Olympus.
Yeah I’d be punished severely when the truth comes out bla bla who cares. Do you see what I see? Nico’s death can be the catalyst for catastrophes and I’m not letting that go.

Things from the books that I need to see in the Percy Jackson show! Warning spoilers if you’ve not read the books.
Disney not canceling this after one season
Iris messages! I just think they are so clever and very immersive.
If Percy doesn’t fight Ares I’ll scream. That was just iconic to me.
More dream stuff. The fact that Demi Gods can always get a glimpse of fate is really important in the books.
Zeus telling Percy he will shoot him out of the sky next time he flies.
Mr. D never getting Percy’s names right.
Dodgeball with the Lastrygonian giants. That was one of my favorite chapters in The Sea of Monsters.
Grover in a dress!
All the sheep 🐏🐑🐏🐑
The empathy link!
PARTY PONIES
The white streaks in Percy and Annabeth hair from holding up the sky.
Thalia being scared of heights.
In the same vein more Percy being scared of drowning.
Ares being whipped by Aphrodite. Seriously her sending him to get Percy then standing outside while she talks to him is so good to me.
Bianca and Percy having a moment before she goes into the automaton. Like a real heart felt one because that is the loss of innocence point for sure.
Rachel - enough said
Dr. Chase - enough said
Nico’s freak out at the end of titans curse because that was just so epic the leave us alone thing ugh I want to see it. Also I can’t wait to see Nico and Bianca in general.
Satyrs hyped up on Coffee!
The labyrinth in general is going to be so good. Like that’s my favorite book so I want to get there more than anything.
The Triple G Ranch and honestly I’d like to see Matthew Mcconaughey play Eurytion.
Percy learning he can use his abilities away from the water.
Mrs. O’Leary my beautiful amazing perfect baby girl.
Calypso because we need the moment where Percy learns that the gods just discard people. Also it helps him humanize Mr. D a little bit more.
Nico apologizing because it shows that Hade’s and his kids aren’t villains and I just think that is so very important.
Beckendorf and Silena are so important to me they deserved better but it’s okay. I think everything that happens with them in Last Olympian has such amazing and perfect impact. I could go on for hours about this.
Hestia because I love her. Before I read the books and knew the basic principle I wanted to be her child. I still do but I really love the way she was treated in this book. So good.
Annabeth saving Percy without knowing!!!
I want a moment similar to Endgame when everyone comes out to stand against Thanos with the Hunters when they come to help in New York.
Sally and Paul fighting!!
The Ares vs Apollo cabin fight. Honestly I think that was so good. Because it gave us a way to feel like Percy was going to fail. And it showed Clarisse’s fatal flaw.
Speaking of that I want more fatal flaw stuff.
Finally I want the moment when Ares shows approval of Clarise. That moment got me. Honestly I am a Clarisse stan.
Over all I’m just ready for more episodes of this show.
