*POV* the chain figuring out the timeline
SKY: Alright, let’s say this again because Hylia almighty… I’m from the very beginning of the timeline, right?
LEGEND: yep, no one in your time period has ever heard of anything called Hyrule and you created the master sword.
FOUR: And I’m next, because my time period comes only a century or so after Hyrule’s founding and there’s no mention of Ganon anywhere.
TIME: Yep. And I’m next, because everyone else has heard of me?
LEGEND: correct. Which leads to the timeline split…
*groans*
WIND: … I come from a time where you defeated Ganon as an adult because of our stories and legends matching with your adventures? And I have to be separate from everyone else in general because my hyrule was flooded?
TIME: yep.
TWILIGHT: and I come from a timeline where you went back in time and stopped your adventure from ever happening? Simply because of the fact that I’m your bloodline descendant and therefore come from a time period where you had kids?
TIME: *grimace* yep.
LEGEND: And I come from a timeline where you lost, because we have the stories of a hero who was killed.
HYRULE: and I therefore have to be in the same timeline because he exists as a legend in my time period.
LEGEND AND FOUR: yep.
WARRIORS: so… where the hell do I exist?
FOUR: our working theory is that you were originally part of Twilight’s timeline, but because of what happened in your adventure, you’re now a part of what we call the Unified timeline, where you have elements of a lot of time periods crammed into one timeline.
WARRIORS: oh, ok, great.
LEGEND: and wild probably exists in this new timeline or in any of the others. He’s too far out to accurately judge.
*10 seconds of silence*
WILD: did I accidentally eat those weird mushrooms again or was that entire conversation real?
LEGEND: *rubbing his eyes* no, it’s rea-… again?

Zelda Community, I want to see what you guys think about where Tears Of The Kingdom's Past is on the timeline!
Did Rauru and Sonia found Hyrule some time after Skyward Sword Link and Zelda came to the surface,
Or
Did they re-found Hyrule after all the other games had fallen into myth?
Please rb for larger sample size! I've heard both versions pretty equally and wanted to know which one was more widely subscribed to. I'd really like to know everyone's thoughts!

totk doesn't "break the established timeline" btw. it is well established in zelda that the spirits of past incarnations can persist and return ex. the hero's shade (who btw even shares a passing resemblance to mummydorf)
Tumblr media
ganondorf was sealed under hyrule castle, effectively dead, his soul reincarnated while his old body festered into calamity ganon, then his soul returned to that old body when the seal broke. not that hard to imagine.
IT'S ALSO been stated on the timeline since the beginning that the kingdom of hyrule was established a bit after skyward sword. so rauru and sonia being the first king and queen doesn't contradict anything.
Tumblr media
nothing fits together perfectly of course but that's how it's ALWAYS been. welcome to the legend of zelda babey

Here’s my 3am thought. Ok so y’all know how Demise cursed Link and Zelda(and basically himself) to be reincarnated and how it’s always the Gerudo male, some random half asleep kid with Courage named Link, and a princess named Zelda…..how would zelda be reincarnated if, idk, someday the bloodline fell off? Zelda has always been within the Hyrule royal family, that hasn’t changed since SWS. What would happen if the Hyrule family bloodline ended? Would the cycle be broken? I’m like mega curious to hear what y’all have to say. And if there’s an official answer please tell me. Anyway night ✌️

iirc you said in another post that the time between ALTTP and OOT was either 80 or 400 years. i haven’t played ALTTP yet but love timelines - are those numbers in the game somewhere?
I think I came up with those specific figures myself, BUT I do have some in-game and official text basis for them! The reason for the 80 year vs 400 years (or even longer) options is that there is actually some pretty big inconsistency between a) various parts of the game itself, b) the official game booklet, and c) Nintendo's big ole retcon of the Imprisoning War. Or possibly retCONS if we count TotK.
(Idk if you wanted an info dump, but you're getting one lol. THANKS FOR THE ASK!! 💜)
SO. The intro cutscene.
Tumblr media
We start by hearing of legends from long ago, about a Golden Power that resides in a hidden land. Many people tried to find it; none ever returned. One day, evil power began to flow forth (we later learn this was due to Ganondorf finding the Triforce), so the King told the sages (originally translated as "Wise Men") to seal the Golden Land away for good. The narrator then describes those events as occurring so long ago that they became legend. Sounds like a while, right?
Tumblr media
But then within about an hour or two of gameplay, you meet Sahrasrahla. Sahasrala? Saharasala? YOU MEET MR SALSA. And he ends up telling you a story about the knights that fought to protect the sages and who were almost all killed at the time, leaving YOU, the protagonist, as the last known member of that bloodline. According to Mr Salsa, those events took place only three or four generations ago.
Tumblr media
That's not long at all! I mean, the exact numbers may vary depending on whether it's 3-4 generations from Salsa-san's point of view or Link's, as well as whether we give that person a human lifespan or an elf one (ALTTP has some Western fantasy elements, but the later games suggest that Hylians are basically just humans with pointy ears), but that would be where my ~80 years figure came from.
One of the later bits of dialogue then mentions Ganondorf rediscovering the Golden Land after the knowledge of it was lost - which may explain the discrepancy between the intro cutscene and Sahasralah(?)'s own dialogue. (I'm taking screenshots from Youtube FYI - see cutscene compilation here.)
Tumblr media
All good so far?
WELP. THEN WE HAVE THE GAME BOOKLET.
Tumblr media
By "game booklet" I mean the little brochure thing that used to come with physical games up until someone decided they weren't necessary. Boo and bah humbug. But I digress.
The original booklet for ALTTP, which you can find online, says that the Imprisoning War took place centuries ago. It also adds a bunch of other new lore details, including Ganondorf's last name, Dragmire - which never actually appears in-game. Both of those things are however missing from the truncated lore dump you get in the Gameboy Advance release's booklet:
Tumblr media
And then there's Nintendo's Fallen Hero retcon. Lol.
See, the original "Imprisoning War" from ALTTP went something like this:
Ganondorf found an entrance to the Sacred Realm (formerly "Golden Land") and went in. Much like the others before him, he was then stuck there forever. UNLIKE the others before him however, he then randomly stumbled across the Triforce, which offered him the power to make a wish.
He made some unspecified wish along the lines of "I want to take over the world". As a result, the Sacred Realm became the Dark World and started to leak evil magic and demons into the Light World (aka "Overworld").
The knights fought against the demons, allowing the sages to seal the entrances ro the Sacred Realm. Note it's unclear if they even knew about Ganondorf's existence at this point.
Sometime later, Ganondorf manages to partially break free, and sends his alter ego Agahnim out to break the seal on the Sacred Realm and merge the two worlds into one.
And then we have Nintendo's retcon, which introduces the whole idea of the Fallen Hero - as a means of clumsily tying ALTTP to Ocarina of Time. So instead of the above:
Ganondorf publicly swears allegiance to the King of Hyrule, only to later backstab him and take over the castle. He then follows Link into the Temple of Time and grabs hold of the Triforce while the latter goes to take a nice long nap. He only manages to claim part of the Triforce (Power), so his wish remains incomplete. The other parts go to Link (Courage) and Zelda (Wisdom).
Seven years later, Link challenges Ganondorf to an epic showdown and loses. Ganondorf claims the remaining parts of the Triforce and uses them to transform into the Demon King. The seven sages, Zelda included, then seal both Ganon and the Triforce away in the Sacred Realm.
The names of the seven sages (per OoT) eventually become the names of the towns in Zelda II. Any remaining discrepancies are handwaved away as unreliable narrators.
Interestingly, TotK's Imprisoning War is much closer to ALTTP's version than Hyrule Historia's - which makes me wonder if that whole retcon is doomed to be retconned once again. Of course, the Triforce isn't present at all within TotK, but it's also a pretty compelling reason for why seven sages with secret stones couldn't win against the one guy with a secret stone. So there’s that.
But yeah, going back to that initial question: no, there's no specific figure provided for the time between the Imprisoning War and events of ALttP. Just depends on which piece of conflicting lore you feel like using lol.

A personal tweak to the Zelda Timeline
So basically I’ve been thinking about LinkedUniverse and been doing some sorta LU fanart and THAT had me thinking about the Zelda Timeline, and more specifically how it would make more sense if Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures swapped Timeline placements. And that’s what this post is about.
Why I feel FS would work better if it came after FSA in the Timeline and vice versa.
So reason number one is how Vaati is characterised in FSA & MC vs how he’s characterised in FS. In the former games, Vaati is shown to be power hungry and Cunning, like when he imprisoned and then impersonated the king in order to both find the Light Force, and stop Link in MC. And while he’s not the MAIN villain and is being manipulated by Ganon in FSA, I think it’s save to say that he’s still in control of his own actions, and was likely scheming up his own plans independently of Ganon, and I might add that in never of theses games has he ever shown interest in Zelda, never even called her pretty. Then we get to FS and suddenly Vaati has gone insane and is suddenly girl crazy and wants to marry Zelda, like, do I need to say more? He goes from Intelligent & Power Hungry, to Insane & Girl Crazy, and then back to Intelligent & Power Hungry. This Sudden change in character makes a lot more sense if FS came after FSA, as then he would be going from Intelligent & Power Hungry in MC, then staying that way in FSA, only to go mad from being sealed in the Four Sword for so long that he can’t even remember who he used to be in FS. Plus the new Timeline placement means that the fairytale mentioned at the beginning of FS suddenly becomes a reference to FSA, in which Vaati is partially implicit in Zelda’s and the Shrine Maidens kidnappings.
Reason number two is how the Gerudo are characterised in FSA vs OoT & BotW/TotK. Again It’s the issue of them going from Fierce Warrior Women in OoT, to Peaceful Desert Dwellers in FSA, and then back to being Warrior Women in BotW / the ancient past of TotK. This would, again, make more sense if FSA swapped Timeline placements with FS, because then the Gerudo are going from Peaceful Desert Dwellers, to Warrior Women, and then staying like that for all their later appearances in the Timeline, and since Twinrova is at least 360 year old, they very well may be the reason for this shift, as they have been manipulating the Gerudo tribe for a long time. This would also mean that FSA is now the game in which Ganon gets his Trident weapon that he uses in most of his future appearances.
And speaking of Ganon the third reason is Ganon’s reasoning for invading Hyrule + Shadow Link’s actions in FSA. In the Hyrule Encyclopaedia, the reason given for Ganon’s invasion of the kingdom of Hyrule is that he’s bitter over his defeat at the hands of the Hero of Twilight at the end of TP, and that Shadow Link, is a being born from that bitterness and brought into the world using the Dark Mirror. Now this is, in my opinion, kinda stupid. Cuz not only is the Ganon from FSA a different incarnation of Ganondorf than the Ganondorf that appears in TP and therefore shouldn’t be able to recall those events, but Shadow Link, (a being born from Ganon’s resentment) actions in FSA don’t really lend themselves to this explanation ever. Shadow Link, or I should say the Shadow Links in Four Swords Adventures only attack Link in certain stages, and when they aren’t doing that, their off harassing the citizens of Hyrule, smearing Link’s good reputation in the process. To me, if Shadow Link was born from Ganon’s resentment of being defeated in TP, then Shadow Link should be more focused on defeating the Colours, and not off tormenting the rest of Hyrule. Shadow Link’s actions DO however make a lot more sense if Ganon is invading Hyrule for similar reasons as to WW Ganondorf. That being he resents how the people of Hyrule get to live in a fertile, prosperous land, while the Gerudo have to endure living in the harsh, unforgiving Gerudo Desert, and want the kingdom for himself, this makes Shadow Link’s actions in FSA make more sense, since in this instance, Shadow Link is born from Ganon’s resentment of how easy Hyrule’s citizens have it, thus Shadow Link spends most of his time giving the people of Hyrule a hard time. And making FSA come before FS makes this explanation make more sense.
I feel like there’s probably more I could go into, but these are the 3 main points I wanted to talk about. I hope I’ve explained my reasoning well enough and that you have a nice day/night.

FROM MY TIMELINES CONCEPT
Boy, am I falling in love with this paring idea. In the first iteration of the timeline, Ganondorf slays the hero - whose soulforce laid incomplete when separated from his shadow - in which Ganondorf extracted him within the Sacred Realm.
Instead of attempting to take the demon king by surprise in a last effort - Zelda implores Dark to return the master sword and turn back time in order to rewrite it.
In Timeline 2 - Sheik and Dark must work together to prevent the end of the Hero.
"I love to hate you"
"I'll take all of you. Any day."
----
I love the idea of exploring the shadow self - especially in such a weighted story like OOT. Imagine if Dark Link was exactly that - his extracted self - the accumulation of all the anguish, suffering, and anger Link has and will go through - as shattered as the timelines themselves.
Of course, there would be a part of him that was angry with Zelda -how could one not be a flurry of mixed emotions? Such begins their complex entanglement of destined souls - and the beginning of the Fierce Deity.
(YES YALL - I HAVE A FICTHEORY that ties in all timelines, Dark Link, and the Fierce Deity)

what is the story of zelda?
Oof, that's kind of a tough one. It's definitely more complicated than Sonic, lol.
The most basic and short way I can explain is: three people reincarnate for all eternity due to a curse. Link is the reincarnated chosen hero, Zelda is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, and Ganondorf is the reincarnation of the demon king Demise.
But if you want the long version: The Zelda franchise has an official timeline which ends up splitting in 3 branches.
It all starts with Skyward Sword. The world is created by the three goddesses: Din goddess of power, Nayru goddess of wisdom & Farore goddess of courage. Before leaving for the heavens, they created the Triforce (a powerful artifact containing the power of the gods).
Later, there's a war between Demise & Hylia, due to the demon king wanting to steal the triforce for his own. To ensure that the triforce (a powerful artifact containing the power of the gods) wouldn't get in the wrong hands, she lifted some of the earth to the heavens alongside the triforce, where her people live in harmony. Hylia would then abandon her immortal form and reincarnate into Zelda. Later, when Link would defeat Demise, before he dies, he curses them in an eternal reincarnation cycle of bloodshed with no end. People settle to the surface, the kingdom of Hyrule is built.
If you want the full story of the rest of the games, I suggest this 15 mins video by Zeltik. because I don't want to write 10 paragraphs explaining the full thing, lol.

Part three of the chain losing their mind talking about the timeline :D
*after three nights of arguing, debating and drinking* LEGEND: Let’s recap
HYRULE: please do I don’t understand any of this.
LEGEND: *pointing at Wind* in your timeline, the Zora just don’t exist anymore, and the Kokiri turned into Koroks because…?
WIND: evolution
LEGEND: … right.
WARRIORS: …you-… you live in a sea?? The Zora are water creatures…???
FOUR: ANYWAY, the problem is that the Zora and Rito exist in Wild’s timeline?
WILD: They are said to be distantly related I think, but that goes back a long time, but I don’t know why they started to turn into Rito.
LEGEND: *downs a bottle of milk* I’m so DONE.
FOUR:… yeah. And then there’s apparently the problem of… what did you call it? The Fallen Hero timeline?
TIME: *long drink of regret*
FOUR: … where the old man died in his fight with Ganon. But… that never happened?
TIME: yep. The split was caused by me going back in time and changing events that were supposed to happen, and since I technically wouldn’t exist if the events were truly changed…
FOUR: … grandfather paradox…
TIME: … then technically I just went to another universe.
LEGEND: *sobbing into his milk*
HYRULE: but why is that a problem for our timeline?
FOUR: because the catalyst for your timeline being made… never happened.
HYRULE: but.. we exist.
WIND: maybe Time’s Zelda changed the timeline again, leaving behind Legend and Hyrule’s timeline to make mine, and then created Twilight’s?
LEGEND: *throws an empty bottle at Wind*
FOUR: there’s… there’s no way to confirm it… any of this! We don’t have any idea how to know if any of this is true!
WARRIORS: we don’t even know if there was a timeline split at all or if this isn’t just random myths and legends. For all we know, we’re all just from different universes and we just happen to share the names of heroes.
TIME: so basically we’re back at square one of asking if it even happened?
TWILIGHT: yep.
FOUR: we just need someone who can confirm it! Like, just one person who’ll tell us how this all fits in together!
WILD: why not just ask all of our Zeldas?
CHAIN MINUS WILD: …
CHAIN MINUS WILD: what?
WILD: yeah, triforce of wisdom and all that? Why don’t we just ask one or all of our Zeldas when we meet them?
FOUR: you are a f#cking genius
TIME: alright, until then, NO TALKING ABOUT THE TIMELINE. AND WE ALL ASK THEM TOGETHER. If they don’t give us an answer we are to never talk about it again. Am I clear?
LEGEND: *half-unconscious* aye aye, captain.

I think it'd be interesting if at some point the royal family just decided to name their kid Link and some random ass Hylian family decided to name their daughter Zelda with the mindset of like “eh, if we do this our kids for SURE will not have to save the world", because they don’t want their kids to deal with that hardship.
Then the universe just laughs at them and still makes their Zelda and Link the ones that have to save Hyrule. We’d have a funky little role reversal where we get to follow Zelda either as a Knight or a swordsman (swordswoman ?) or just an average Hylian, meanwhile Link is the Prince of Hyrule.

post number three will be kind of a two-for-one zelda theory post. theory one is the placement of minish cap on the timeline. theory two is the connection between the lanayru desert, the wind tribe, and the gerudo.
look at these maps
Tumblr media
(relative to hyrule castle) forest with lost woods magic to the northwest. village to the west. big lake to the southeast. river leading from castle moat to big lake. desert to the southwest.
Tumblr media
(relative to hyrule castle) forest with lost woods magic to the west. graveyard to the west. big lake to the southeast. river leading from castle moat to big lake. new river leading south, and southwest, into a forest. the further south you go in said forest the more dehydrted the grass looks.
Tumblr media
(relative to central lake/moat) forest with lost woods magic to the southwest. graveyard to the west. small lake to the southeast. no river leading from central lake to small lake. river leading south.
i should probably get to the point now.
i believe that minish cap takes place between alttp and tloz. the lost woods began moving progressively further south into kakariko, so hyrule town was built in order to prevent people from being lost. the village was repurposed as the graveyard. by the time of tloz, the lost woods have moved fully south, and the graveyard is just a regular non-lost graveyard.
as for the rivers. the hylians dug a channel from the moat to the desert in an attempt to terraform it and add forests. this was largely successful; this is why the lost woods were able to move into the area, but it isnt fully complete, which is why the grass further south (around the wind tribe ruins) looks almost dead. there is more full desert off-screen; this is where the gerudo live, so i doubt the hylians would encroach on that land.
by the time of tloz, the southbound river takes over, and the river leading to lake hylia dries up. as a result lake hylia shrinks. then ganon shows up and destroys hyrule castle, turning the moat into a massive lake with fractured islands in the center.
i theorize that the reason the hero of men needed the picori blade is because somehow the master sword went missing or was destroyed. (i have a real crackpot theory on how that happened, roping in botw and totk, but thats a whole other beast to tackle. for now we can just chalk it up to it getting so lost in the woods it could never be recovered.) the picori blade was forged into the four sword, which was used to seal vaati and later ganon.
as for why link doesnt use the four sword in tloz… hes, like, 10 in that game. its very likely that he just didnt think of it. he just did exactly as impa asked of him: collect the pieces of the triforce of wisdom, and use its combined power to defeat ganon, permanently this time. no more half measures by sealing him away.
going back to the topic of the wind tribe. i mentioned them before in my first post, but i left things a little… unfinished, so ill present my whole theory on the wind tribe.
i believe the wind tribe are the hylians who lived in the lanayru province before skyward sword. first lets look at the technology:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the lanayru province has a clear red and blue theming, and most of their technology consists of levitating machines. as does mazaal, the levitating machine built by the wind tribe to protect their home.
this carries over to the wind tribe members themselves, who wear only red and blue.
and speaking of the actual people:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
every member of the wind tribe have red hair. every member of the gerudo have red hair. since the lanayru desert in skyward sword has a bug called the gerudo dragonfly, its a given that the lanayru desert becomes the home of the gerudo.
the lanayru desert is also where link finds the gust bellows, which grants him control over wind.
now to fit all the pieces together.
in ancient times, the hylians in the lanayru province rapidly progressed sometime after the discovery of the timeshift stones. they also gained a powerful mastery over the wind itself, reflected in their technology and in their magic. their advancements came at a cost, though; the once lush region became a harsh desert. in order to escape the deadly environment they created, the lanayru hylians used their mastery over the wind to escape into the skies. while many went into the skies, becoming the wind tribe, many decided to stay on the surface, receding further into the desert and becoming the gerudo. eventually, during the time of minish cap, the reforestation efforts of the lanayru desert reach the wind ruins - potentially some of the same ruins that the link of skyward sword explores, albeit much more decayed.
so yeah theres my two for one theory post
