My three most recent Bionicle drawings, together
I've been trying a new style with these, moving away from heavy lineart in favor of a painted approach. These are probably my favorite pieces I've made.
I've also received a lot of love and support here on Tumblr, though I haven't been here long. Thanks for sharing my work, it means a lot!

- Z A K T A N -
Skipping ahead again for a bit, but I just REALLY wanted to design Zaktan. Yes, I made Zak here she/her. I was reminded of how there were female skakdi and how they were "more vicious" than the males.
SO
Yeah, Zaktan is gorl :')

Did they receive a guide book on how the holiday season is supposed to be celebrated? No.
Did they seek one out?
Also no.
Merry Christmas! 🌟
From the Hateship gang and their rendition of ruining the fun being merry!
(yep, I'm still working on the game)
Haven't done one of these seasonal illustrations in a while, but I thought this time around something goofy was in order~

No one I can pitch this to elsewhere
Voya Nui Matoran are certainly tough from having to survive without Toa or turaga, yet Mata Nui Matoran are hardy on their own. They have skilled militaries that held off Makuta for decades.
What if Jaller and his Matoran rescue team brought a larger force? This might be from them sailing from Mata Nui to Voya Nui, or it would put up a real fight against Karzahni.
Imagine it: Ga-Matoran sailors, Ta-Matoran infantry, Onu-Matoran engineers and Cavalry of the Ussal and Boxor variety. Then we have the Le-Matoran pilots with their birds, and the Ko-Matoran linguists and scholars. And the Po-Matoran with equal skill and muscle. And all of them upgraded with Metru Nui technology. They're flinging Kanoka disks, Nuparu probably attached the Exo-Toa rockets to the Boxors. The Ta-Matoran are armed with salvaged Vahki staffs. Imagine Kongu's bird armed with overcharged staffs. Maybe the Po-Matoran have some sort of artillery, for precision work?
And there is Takanuva, just sitting back and watching the sparks fly.
Imagine these Matoran deploying on Voya Nui's shores. Remember, these Matoran weren't passively waiting to be saved, they were fighting the Rahi with every bit of strength they had! They assembled armies, defenses, all sorts of things without Toa help!
They were clever, they were brave, and they were heroes, because it's what you do that makes you a hero.
And I'm also picturing Zaktan arguing with one of the other Piraka, "Who in the pits are these people?!" While disks of destruction go off around them and the Boxor Regiment takes down their big robots.

Since Zaktan is presumably from the Skaddi's home island of Zakaz, does that mean he was named after the island, like the way highly patriotic people name their kids after their country (I've known an Italian named Italia, for example)? If so, I feel sorry for him; Zakaz patriotism seems like a lost cause. No wonder he's pissed all the time.

Note
Recently learned that the Piraka apparently had preliminary names (Zaktan was "Noxis", Vezok was "Grraka", Avak was "Mekrani", Thok was "Wracko", Reidak was "Trakka", Hakann was "Brutaka") and now I'm wondering what the five new names would mean in your Matoran or Skakdi languages
These prototype names have been known to me for a long time, yes, and, believe it or not, in my work on the 3rd Edition of the Matoran Dictionary, I have taken some steps to incorporate them into the etymological origins of the official names of the Piraka, as a little easter egg.
To tease this a bit, here is the story for the origins of the name of the Skakdi Zaktan:
Zaktan has possibly the most interesting history of the Piraka. He is a Skakdi who, as far as anyone ever knew, possessed no additional auxiliary power/ability like his other Skakdi brethren, aside from his laser-vision. He was also discovered by The Shadowed One while he was a slave in a Protodermis mine. By those measures, he seems to have had a rather unfortunate life, and I imagine may have been somewhat of a misfit amongst the other hyper-powered Skakdi on Zakaz, looked down upon for his perceived “weakness” and maybe even exiled from Zakaz at some point.
My conception of his name-origins reflects this:
Zaktan’s original name (upon creation) would have been something like Zakta or Zaksa, derived from the Skakdi word zaktaa, zaksaa “cunning, strategic, manipulative”, which traces back to Early Skakdi zaksas. This word zaksas is not native to the Skakdi Language, but entered the language via borrowing from other languages of the Mata System in a very early period–in fact, the period of the Barraki (80-95k years before present).
At the time of its borrowed, the term zaksas was an adaptation of the form of some other word to the sound system of the Skakdi Language. It represents an original form zoksis or noxis (!), which is found in various dialects of Matoric in the northern and eastern regions of the MU. This term ultimately originates as a clipping of a form takadoxis or takanoxis “of (the) Cunning One” or “of (the) Manipulator”, formed from the name of the Barraki Takadox (known historically as a cunning and manipulative leader) combined with an archaic affix -is “of, related to”, not found in Matoric but readily used in non-Matoric languages like Vortixxaric. Thus, Zaktan’s (Zakta’s) original name evoked the cunning of an ancient Barraki.
However, when he became exiled and enslaved, he lost this name and was given another--a common practice amongst enslavers in the Mata System, used to try to erase the identity of the enslaved. I have chosen to locate the Protodermis mines in which Zaktan was imprisoned as somewhere in the northern central regions of the Mata System.
In this area, a variant of Matoric is spoken called Central North Insular Matoric (also spoken as a trade-language on the island of Stelt), and in this variety there is a word zaktan, which is cognate with (i.e. from the same etymological source as) and roughly of the same meaning as the North Matoric word daita(n) “small creature”, which is Anglicized as -dite in the word Protodite (“first/primeval small creature”).
His captors renamed him Zaktan “small one”, intending to make him small, insignificant, powerless, never realizing how prescient the name would turn out to be…

More Health Issues in Bionicle Headcanons
Zaktan probably had some lung damage from working in an unregulated protodermis mine, though, like the tinnitus, that was healed when he became a swarm of protodites.
The Onu-Matoran on Mata Nui probably have a bit of lung damage too, actually, although theirs is less severe since they probably at least TRIED to follow mining regulations on Mata Nui, although it probably took some time for Whenua to remember them all, since his specialty was the Archives. The lack of the probably more advanced equipment in they had in Metru Nui may have also made these regulations more difficult to apply. Taipu specifically probably has a bit more lung damage than the other Onu-Matoran because he does Onepu’s mining as well, and, being the strongest miner, he’s the most likely to dig through and hit a new, potentially hazardous material first.

Yo yo.
The Piraka were always among my favorite Bionicle villains due to sheer force of personality and I’ve had a rough idea of how I’d handle them, but it was Jennifer A. Reuter’s drawings of them that really got me on the right track. The idea I had for them on the whole was “distractingly contemporary for the universe they’re in,” ergo stuff like Hakann’s stogie, Thok’s jacket, and Avak’s toolkit. The major exceptions to this are Reidak and Vezon, and the reasons for that stem from Reidak’s laziness (”why bother planning when I can just bum rush literally anything, I’m indestructible”) and the fact that Vezon was never meant to exist and got by on whatever scraps he could steal leading up to his fateful encounter with the Mask of Life.
Skakdi are super fun and I love drawing them.

Your next mission is infiltrating a prestigious rival mob's ball party for their weapon plans and convincing one of your six (or seven?) miserable, monstrous biomech Skakdi colleagues to assist you... or date you while they're at it.
With the boons of a heist always a temptation among outlaws, how well will your new bond with your chosen company last?
Romantic, despicable and delightfully cheeky, Hateship drops you into the palms of a few skeevy, and a few hopelessly messy, disasters for an experience in navigating their dramatic attitudes… or make them worse.
Hateship is a DEMO release of a dating sim noir rendition of the biomechanical monsters from Bionicle (you don't need to know a lick of the setting to play it. You just gotta love lizard-men and the aesthetic.)
Play the Demo!
