I'm not sure "the women being knocked out of the duel so that Yuma can win afterwards" really counts. Rio does defeat Bronk but again it's offscreen. Maybe in the Gallop era where we were begging for breadcrumbs that was OKAY, but considering Studio Bridge destroyed the argument that the franchise can't depict girls winning because shonen (which was always nonsensical anyway) we don't need to pretend that was good rep.
Yeah but it doesn't feel quite outright hostile or intentionally incel pilled so much as part of Yoshida's intellectual laziness?
And it's not like ZEXAL is some some misogynistic manifesto for the world's Incels who hate Rian Johnson and think Equip Spells are bad because a girl used/mass produced them.
I'd also make a note that Bridge is 2020 onwards. Society with Japanese media is marching on in general. Even Kamen Rider is getting non asterisk writing.
Like writers have noted they do/did want more female rep who weren't strict eye candy. Takahashi wanted Mai to have more relevance to the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga but got slapped down by his editor to not waste time on her. And one of the guys who does Duel Masters' manga has basically said he and his colleagues who write for Coro Coro have sales and ratings drop like bricks if even one girl is in one panel of the manga.
But ZEXAL wasn't saying it's 'natural' for women to 'be bad at card games', which is an insane take from someone who is very mentally disturbed.
