Retro Gaming 90's- Yu-GI-Oh! Forbidden Memories: (1999)
Retro Gaming 90’s- Yu-GI-Oh! Forbidden Memories: (1999)
There are many people who remember how popular the Yu-Gi-Oh card game was throughout the 00’s decade. When it came down to trading card games in general many people would argue that Yu-Gi-Oh had exceeded Pokemon in terms of popularity. In terms of video games Pokemon has always been more popular than Yu-Gi-Oh but the Forbidden Memories game from ’99 was considered a memorable classic; while…

I had a really chaotic dream that made sense in the moment where I was at my local video game store, found a secret entrance in the back, and it led to the world of Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories and I was the Prince. Shada (not Shadi or Sadin) was my guide and he and the Prince were familiar enough to kiss, which is definitely one of the odder pairings I've seen in the fandom XD The other weird thing was Yugi also had an Ancient Egyptian counterpart and he was crying cause he didn't want the Prince to die... I guess someone had told him about the anime's future and he was worried, or worried he might die fighting Heishin or Priest Seto.
Speaking of Seto, he knew who I was and proceeded to taunt me about it, and challenged me to escape a labyrinth while the Man-Eater Bug card was chasing me--it'd be easy if I could read Ancient Egyptian, but alas XD Somehow I made my way through just in time to see him imprison Heishin into a card with the Millennium Items, and he returned a lost Gemini Elf card to me. And then we got distracted talking about the logistics of the song "Purple Snowflakes" (Seto believed it was real, I didn't) which I woke up with in my head.

randomly remembered a thread i did on twitter last year that i think was fun so i'm reposting it here lol
so The Drdek. it has a nonsense name and its flavor text refers to its bipedal eye, despite there only being one hand. this piqued my interest, so i looked into the flavor text and it took me on a journey
Tumblr media
the name is デス・フット, which literally means Death Foot. "The Drdek" was a name decided in 1999,which was firmly in the era when yugioh translations were avoiding the word "death" whenever possible. it's weird, but i sort of get how we got where we are now. the flavor text is 目玉に足の生えた化け物。高くジャンプしてかぎづめで攻撃する。my translation of that would be "A monster that grew a leg on its eye. It has a high jump and a claw attack." the flavor text on the card as printed is mostly correct, but the mistranslation still sticks out. thus, i decided to check its physical release history, in case it had been changed over time. except it doesn't have on. as far as physical cards are concerned, this is an OCG exclusive (for non-yugioh players, OCG is the Japanese version of the game and TCG is the english version). where does the translation come from, then? one of the video games, probably
the first yugioh game featuring The Drdek in english was its third appearance in total, in Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories. it was translated as such
Tumblr media
the flavor text is much more accurate. but it's still off, so i decided to go back and look into its other translations. that brought me to Yu-Gi-Oh Dark Duel Stories, the second english appearance of The Drdek
Tumblr media
completely different flavor text. this was most likely due to text limitations. the flavor text is the same in japanese, but the text would be longer in english, so the change makes sense considering
in Yu-Gi-Oh The Duelists of the Roses, The Drdek makes its third appearance, but its first as an effect monster, meaning it lacked flavor text, and thus is irrelevant to this conversation
Yu-Gi-Oh The Sacred Cards is the next game where it appears with flavor text. this reads "A boggling monster of an eyeball from which grows a foot. To attack, it leaps high and strikes with its sharp talons." which is an entirely reasonable full translation of the original Japanese, with minimal compromise for character space (it doesn't all fit on screen at once). The Sacred Cards came out in November 2003. with the translation being accurate, it should have ended here. unfortunately, it doesn't
Tumblr media
Yu-Gi-Oh The Eternal Duelist Soul changed the flavor text, and it's here that we finally see the flavor text on the above card. that same flavor text was reused in Yu-Gi-Oh Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel
Tumblr media
however, i said that The Sacred Cards came out in November 2003. Eternal Duelist Soul came out in came out in October 2002. over a year before! Worldwide Edition also came out in 2003, but it came out in April, months before The Sacred Cards. that means that the mistranslation was present, then fixed. yet, the card posted above is in the modern border treatment. because it doesn't end with the correct translation or the incorrect translation's first appearance
after the brief hiccup of accuracy in The Sacred Cards, the mistranslation becomes the standard translation for The Drdek, and after 2006, the game pretty much vanishes from yugioh video games, because it's bad. its reappearance in 2017 is what gives us the version in the modern border

what's the point? there isn't one. this is just an extended piece of trivia. hope you enjoyed it :)
