I have been writing like a man possessed. I have written 5,772 words since tuesday, bringing my total word count to just over 6,000, sitting at a nice little 6,260 words. The goal has been to hit around 55,000 to 61,000 or so, just within that general ballpark. I'm writing like crazy, and I am so close to petering out, but I also want to keep going. I've been telling myself that I will write at least 1,000 words a day, and for some reason it works? It's slow and I often just tab back into youtube and watch whatever I'm watching or listen to whatever I'm listening to on spotify. (I have listened to GOODING, Ghost, and Barenaked Ladies non-stop all day every day) If there's anything any of you take from this, please let it be that just doing it will feel good, and you'll hit that flow state and stuff will just come out somehow? I invented the deuteragonist today and I just feel like I'm on a roll, and all I've really done is just keep up a steady routine and pushing myself to hit a minimum. I know for a fact this would never work for everyone, but you should try it at least once. Just down a can of your preferred caffeinated beverage and get to work for 2 or 3 hours while you listen to your favorite artists or a podcast or something.

World Building in Five

The Blood Cleaners takes place hundreds of years into the future (no specified year). The setting is a city called Corpa, located in post-apocalyptic Arizona. Corpa is not the ruins of a real life city. It is a city that was formed after the great nuclear war (which they call The Last War).

There are nine sections of Corpa. There’s the Steel Castle, often called the Steel, a fortress that looks like a cluster of skyscrapers fused together. It’s hard for me to find or create an image that portrays what the Steel is supposed to look like. I found a great image from a still in a YouTube video by Earth’s Last Echoes that conveys what I had in mind. I also use the image from Artstation to show the aesthetic of the city in the middle of the desert, though Corpa is not in ruins. The Steel is the home of the Fists, the ruling class of Corpa.

The underground section is a series of tunnels that are built to be like a bunker. The underground consists of many storage rooms, closets, homes, labs, classrooms, medical bays, cafeterias, shops, offices, gymnasiums, and a boiler room. I use a thumbnail from a video by Selcuk Celebi Ambient & Music to portray what a home in the tunnels would look like. The tunnels mostly house the poorest residents of Corpa. Even tunnel workers with well-off occupations like teachers and doctors are less prosperous than their surface counterparts. One cool feature of the tunnels are the vaculators, big holes where garbage is dumped and transported through ducts to the incinerator. People who live in the tunnels are called Tunnelers.

The surface section consists of the city above ground, the urban and suburban areas surrounding the Steel. The urban area includes a section of administrative buildings where the Fists carry out their government jobs. The surface is made up of many hospitals, shops, restaurants, houses, schools, research labs, parks, office buildings, and plazas. People who live on the surface are called Surfacers, including those who don’t live in the urban or suburban sections, but do live in the farmland, lumber farm, industrial district, energy district, quarry, or mine.

The farmland is the spacious section of land used for agriculture purposes. They grow the crops and raise the livestock that feeds most of the city.

The lumber farm is a lumber mill in the midst of a forest grown for the purpose of providing lumber for the city.

The industrial district is made up of many factories used for making anything and everything used in the daily lives of Corpa’s residents. I portray the factory district using a thumbnail from the YouTube channel Dark Dystopia. It portrays the overall mood of the setting.

Past the factory district are the rocky areas where quarries and mines can be found. I chose to include an image of a quarry because this location is especially important to the plot. The quarry workers live under especially harsh conditions.

The city is surrounded by the energy district, which consists of solar panels and wind turbines that provide electricity.

Corpa covers a fifty mile radius, which is 2500 square miles. There are some other interesting aspects of Corpa that I’m going to have to keep secret because they would be plot spoilers. The residents of Corpa have been fed misinformation about the city’s founding and purpose by their corrupt, totalitarian government. The plot involves MC Justin uncovering the secrets of the city.

honestly i thought that joining a writing group would hold me accountable to deadlines and motivate me to write more but instead im so constantly stressed i can barely sleep

#dellete #this is .#not a real world problem. im aware of that #criticism isn't the problem; criticism makes things better I'm surr #*sure #im just so tired.... i feel like every young aspiring novelist has half a book cranked out already while im still structuring workshopping #havent written a chronological set of chapters because i keep going back to the drawing board #im never doing enough and i know in part this is affected by the relentless depressive episodes #which im not managing well either #im just - fuuck! fuck! i need to achieve something! i need to achieve something good and #prove that im worthy #i have the ideas and the ... themes and the arcs to make something good here i think but it needs to be impeccably structured #and im wasting time and im never going to make it but i need to prove im good for something #and its difficult i just cant do enough. i just cant do enough even though i do fuck all with my life and i cant outrun the old anxiety #that it needs to be done ASAP because i might not have much time left #im stressed? im stressed and tired and i feel mocked and. and these arent even real world problems like jobs and bills and shit #im barely interacting with the world as it were and its so terrifying to me #its so disappointing. whatever

I really enjoy my characters

Really, I do. I've been unable to really make progress with my novel, which is sitting around 9,000 words right now, so I figured I'd try and write a short story set after the novel so I could get a better idea of how the story is going to develop through the novel, and to help better characterize my characters. I introduced a side character named Valerian in one of the early chapters, who's essentially Alzad's sort of wild card sorcerer companion. He is a human and his entire personality is being reckless, sarcastic and snarky while he fumbles with actually being able to perform functional magic. He's a really good contrast to Alzad who's moral and is at odds with himself while Valerian is just "This is fun. I like this." Writing for Valerian is one of the most enjoyable parts of this process and I felt like I should share.
