There is a type of plot that is prevalent in YA books and starting to get into general lit that I do not like. It is a similar trope to the MacGuffin, but instead of the plot being driven by an object, it is driven by the characters being in some sort of situation with formally fixed stakes.
Just as a MacGuffin is an object with no specific properties that affect its importance to the story, the identifying characteristic of this plot is that exact nature of the situation is irrelevant or at least not very important.
A very common example is when characters are involved in some sort of game or competition—for example, the first Throne of Glass book involves the protagonist competing to become the king's assassin, but the plot of the book would need to change very little if the competition was a beauty pageant.
"Gamified" plot lines like this often also include MacGuffins (to drive the "game"), confirming the tropes' similarity in my head.
The other common example is the "magic/superhero/assassin school" plot. The "school" is often just a device that brings the characters together and keeps them on a predetermined track, but there's nothing about what the characters are learning or even the school's specific identity as an educational institution that affects the plot.

the basic formula for any fanfic direct to movie feature
main girl, a bit awkward, kind of pretty in the way that is not HOT but cute (she will think she's ugly and dress poorly), should be a relatively good girl and can be mostly virginal, and can have some sort of medical condition that is mentioned several times at first but never worked on or expanded upon and can sometimes be forgotten towards the end of the series
main dude, cold, (can be really toxic but will be ignored for plot reasons,) really rich for some reason, doesn't really work but makes it look like he works, unattached to everyone expect for main girl. has some sort of traumatic past and will not go to therapy.
main girl and dude meet in some sort of circumstance, can be a friendly or mean interaction- does not matter
proximity is forced. they have to interact at some point again. because of underlying circumstances they will be forced to talk and chat about something, main dude will learn one thing about main girl and find it interesting while main girl will begin to think that main dude is kinda cute. boy will become entirely obsessed for no reason other than that one fact he found out OR he is challenged in some capacity to pursue her.
girl will have a friend (can be boy or girl) that will be the comic relief and will fill in the spaces when girl can not talk to boy
they (m boy and girl) will meet again in another circumstance that is outside of their choosing, either friend or business or some other event will force them to see each other.
they will be separated from the group and have another conversation that leads to more interest being garnered from either side
some sort of event (could be tragic or very minimal) makes it so that guy will have to save girl from something. it is merely to get the first soft interaction from guy
she will fall for him slightly. girl will talk to friend about this interaction and friend will call it "irregular" or unusual because of boy's normal demenor
girl will attend school, job, function that is partially funded or dedicated to dude. they will meet at the function and are to be seen together. a potential ex lover from either side is introduced as a foil to main boy or girl
they will go on a date of sorts or will be forced to talk to each other again. (this can end good or poorly, it does not matter) they can also kiss here, but it does not matter.
girl will go further into what she was doing, get new job, move to new place, finish school etc. BUT she will struggle with it for the first while. she will reach out to dude because she will remember one interaction that was good OR she will reach out to a new boy because she wants friendship or a date
she will run into main dude again with the date or by coincidence with new boy. (a conflict can ensue or the date with new boy will fizzle out and she will go and reconcile with Main dude)
they will maybe have sex, (does not matter, but for the sake of shitty fanfic to movie formula, this is our first sex scene between the two main characters.) they will become extremely attached to each other and immediately begin to date
girl will attempt to go back to work or school but will have some sort of issues with main dude interfering. (they can or can not fight about this, it does not matter, just a conflict needs to develop)
friend should be brought back for an update since main characters had sex.
main dude will have his own issues with SOMETHING, does not matter what it is, it will preoccupy his time and make it so that their relationship can not develop normally
they will have some sort of conflict they next time they are together. this needs to be a huge red flag conflict that they can not reasonably reconcile over but they will to some capacity.
even though they are still together, the cracks start to show and main girl begins to doubt main boy from his previous relationships or some sort of secret he has kept from her
secret will be revealed somehow (does not matter from who) and main girl will ditch main dude without a word
main dude will be confused and unsure what to do and will not seek therapy for at least one more movie
they will meet in some sort of circumstance and have to leave each other in a dramatic fashion because something bad happened that was outside of both of their controls

Something I love about Jude is, that when she witnesses how Balekin treats Cardan, she isn't like every other YA main character "oh no, that's why he's so mean. I should help him!", but more like "oh no, Cardan has the potential to be even worse, I gotta stop him!"

ok, i'm just going to say it. there's a reason that some of us like reading monster/alien romance just as much as maybe even more than regular romance.
and no, it's not about the supernatural dicks (at least not for me).
in short, it's about respect. obviously, the monster/alien comes from a place somewhere other than human society on planet Earth. because of that, he is completely ignorant of the sexist bias inherent in our society. (and by inherent i mean literally trained into us since birth and embedded in every aspect of our society)
sometimes the monster's views are more misogynistic — but in those stories the heroine manages to change his views by earning his respect as they navigate their inter-special differences (aka, he learns and fixes himself).
usually, the monsters believe strongly in equality between the sexes, and they are often shocked and horrified if/when they learn of how human men treat their partners. [and yes, i know some of them are over-the-top protective to the point of being controlling, but even then it's because they view the heroines as someone to continuously be protected, cherished, and respected.]
TLDR: it's an escape into a romantic fantasy where the love interest is GUARANTEED to be a good partner because he literally could never think to harm, insult, or disrespect the heroine

What are the tropes for the ROs?
that's a great question that i am going to have a Particularly mediocre answer to :') i'm not particularly well-versed in tropes but i've tried to find you at least one that sound accurate per RO (keyword 'tried' aksdj)
universally they can all be found family or good friends (or mortal enemies, if that's what you want)
however more specific (not necessarily in reference to romance);
A. Bellefleur; hurt/comfort (if you play your cards right) ; unintentionally hot and suffering for it
K. Valiev; protector (overprotective) ; noble idiot ;
A. Caras; slow-burn ; pining from a distance (mutual pining?) ;
T. Bellefleur; grey morality ; (can be) rivalmancy ; madly in love and not happy about it
M. Serrel; (can be) rivalmancy ; forced proximity ; (can be) friends to lovers ; bully your loved ones
i hope this answer is alright!

looking to publish my WIP somewhere...
my current WIP (which is the one I'm wanting to publish) is Your Average Fangirl, it follows an anxious fmc that goes on tour with her favorite music artist. it follows more of a YA romance plot line with a slow burn where he falls first and harder <3

girls will be obsessed with that one guy from a YA fiction which was thrown deep in to the abyss of deleted works that they had read in their mid-teen (formative) years on a crowdfunded/non-profit website. I am girls

the best part of tgcf is that it understands that 17 is NOT old enough to have enough of a nuanced view of the world to be a god with the responsibility it entails. like yeah no wonder xie lian’s first ascension ended the way it did when he was a teenager who had never experienced any significant hardship in his life.

the way books are becoming fast fashion is actually criminal. there has been such a decline in quality of writing and storytelling over the past few years because publishers are focusing more on selling tropes and marketable scenes instead of the story in the book itself. it all depends on what’s trending and how easily they can sell as many copies to as many people as possible.

Reading Coco Mellor's Cleopatra and Frankenstein feels like one of those "the highlights of the year" instagram reels that a lot of people make at the end of each year, just putting together pictures/videos from each month to describe how the past year was. We, as readers, are only privy to the bits and pieces of information about Cleo and Frank and other characters throughout their time together, but we don't get the details, and especially the hows, like how they fell in love, how their relationship/friendship progressed, how they accommodated their relationship into their life each day, or how coercion and distance seeped in. The narration is coherent enough to keep hold of the readers' attention throughout the story the perspective is often a gaze from outside inwards, so we get to see their story like a montage. The novel tells you what happened, instead of showing you what happened.

Writing Childhood Best Friends to Lovers
instagram: @ grace_should_write
This is a super popular trope, and these are some of my personal takes on how to write it properly!
ALSO, SORRY FOR THE LACK OF POSTS. Finals season and extracurricular performances have KILLED ME this past month. But, I hope this means more consistent posting 🥲🥲🥲
Thanks for sticking by, and enjoy these tips!
∘₊✧────── ☾☼☽ ──────✧₊∘
1. Flesh out their history
Childhood best friends means what it says—they were best friends during CHILDHOOD. As the author, you must know what their childhood was like.
For practice, you can do things like:
writing out important backstory scenes that were CRUCIAL to their relationship
ex. a big fight, when one of them helped out the other in a very bad time, when they became friends, etc.
creating a TIMELINE of their relationship
often based on point 1, with important moments being roadmapped to show how the relationship developed
thinking of moments that produced EXCLUSIVE MEMORIES to the best friends
ex. inside jokes and specific references, “remember when ______?” and “he reminds me of ______!” moments, friendship bracelets worn to this day, etc
Exercises like this make the trope more realistic—you’re showing to yourself how the children became BEST FRIENDS, and how their relationship was defined after it was determined.
2. Something has to change
Childhood best friends don’t just become lovers—something needs to change!
Whether it’s puberty increasing horniness by 100%, not seeing each other for a while, or anything like that, something has to happen to move them away from the “friends” route and onto the “potentially romantic” route.
Here are some ideas:
one or both glow up
new jobs, new schools, new setting in general
they suddenly meet once more after a long period of time (ex. 10 years)
on that note, they could meet in DANGER (like a heist or a battle), in a ROMANTIC setting (ex. seeing each other awkwardly at a bar), a CORPORATE setting, a SIMILAR SETTING TO THEIR CHILDHOOD… (could be anything!)
they help out a mutual friend who doesn’t know they know each other, but then they see each other again and are SHOCKED
a childhood betrayal (at least interpreted as such by one party) leaves them not speaking… but they meet again! (this is GREAT for cleaning the slate AND embittering the memories!!)
3. Make it awkward
They shouldn’t immediately accept the change (usually). Human nature generally makes us change-averse, so having a period of shock and denial over brewing feelings is very natural. It’s also a NATURAL source of conflict!
Generate conflict ideas from the awkwardness. They can:
actively fight against the relationship (ex. being a bit meaner when they see each other)
be colder towards each other
hold childhood memories AGAINST each other (using the BAD memories to undermine the other person)
avoid each other, but not stop thinking about the other person….
mentally compare their former relationship to this one, asking themselves “what happened?” “what changed?” “…HOW DID WE GET HERE?”
notice NEW THINGS about the other person, and think of it in a more resentful light: ex. “Your hair was shorter back then…I don’t know, seemed more practical.” “I’ll bet you can’t even swim the length of our old pool now—not like you could.”
Before they get to the ROMANCE stage, this period of iffy “wtf” is an excellent source of angst and conflict.
4. Something BIG happens
Big doesn’t always mean LARGE-SCALE BATTLE DRAGONS MAGIC BULLETS FLYING SWING SWING (although it could)—it’s simply something that affects one of the characters deeply.
Some ideas include:
the death of a close friend or family member
the loss of a job or a dream slipping out of reach
a tumultuous break up
a near-death experience
one of the characters suddenly disappears
a vestige of their childhood is destroyed
one other close friend or family member betrays them
These are all heavily impactful things that have the power to ruin someone, at least for a period of time.
During this time, because the characters are too busy focusing on this disaster than anything else, it will make it a lot easier for the childhood best friends to become close again.
It gives them more opportunities to show how much they care about each other, and to actually be there for the other person as they go through it.
Eventually, they’ll realize through these massive series of development that the one for them was right in front of them! IF it’s a happy ending >:)
