spoilers for Cowboy Bebop but I've recently been stuck on what "You're gonna carry that weight" actually means and I feel like it's about how the past never really leaves you. Like really never leaves you. You can't forget it, you can't face it and get past it, and you can't leave it behind. It sticks with you in a thousand different messy ways. You really just have to live with it.
It's about reconciling with the past in the most visceral way. The crews instinct is to romanticize and wish for a return but it's the past, it'll never really go back to the same way it was. Jet will never get back with Alisa, Spike will never be with Julia again, and Faye can't return to the past. And so it's a specter. And for those that can't deal with that ghost, it haunts them. It's why the only one who can, or whose past aren't long shadows cast behind them, Ein and Ed, are the only ones who live with it. They accept the messiness and move forward. It's not a perfect solution and not a perfect life, but they move forward and live with it anyways. Spike couldn't

let me soak in this river
the blue paint
that lingered on my skin
has seeped through my pores
once more
I resign.
the iris of yesterday
has me in a grip
that I'm afraid I will never
overcome
so, please, cry for me,
for tomorrow
my moon may never rise
and I'll carry that weight
with this half empty bottle
that I cradle oh-so dearly
the paint will dry soon.

when I was a kid and watched cowboy bebop I was like damn, it must suck to have the past always be with you. and it wasn't like I didn't have a "past". I probably had more than the standard share of "past" when I was a kid. but now, a lot older, I watch it and it cuts this hole into me and I realize what they're about. Having a "past" that you created with choices that You Made and regret is different from just having a past. That's the stuff that always stays with you. You only hope you can learn from it. Cause' either way, you're gonna carry that weight
