hey there!

I kind of consider you the resident dnp expert (at least in dnp culture) so I wanted your opinion on a question that's been building for a while now.

What are the boundaries for dnp now?

There are so many things that I feel have changed even in the last four years: writing smutty rpf was Gross and Weird, along with art along that line, speculating about their relationship was ABSOLUTELY a no-go, all things that I see happening on Tumblr now. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing!! I'm just acknowledging things have changed over time. They're different people now and so are we, and the "we know you know" era is lots of fun.

I was browsing reddit today (bad idea, do not recommend) and came across a post from a new Phannie asking if DnP were in a relationship. And while I agree that we cannot say for absolute certain that they are, the responses had a VERY different vibe than on here, emphasizing how bad the speculation was (true) and essentially saying "don't even think about that, just enjoy their content." (or something to that extent.)

Which... is very different from this here website in which we joke about them being horney for each other constantly lmao.

Being a very rules-driven person, I like expectations to be made abundantly clear for pretty much everything. So that's why I want to ask: Is there a line here? Are we crossing that line? How defined is that line? (All of this, of course, I recognize is your opinion and yours alone, and if this is posted I encourage anyone else to share their two-cents in a respectful way.)

Obviously, trying to find out where they live/things like that is very clearly crossing a boundary. But is there some sort of limit or boundary I (and tbh the rest of the phandom), in your opinion, should be keeping in mind?

'resident expert' is a hefty title, i'm just here trying my best!

'what are the boundaries for dnp now?' is really a great question. cause the thing is, we used to know. there used to be a fairly well-defined and mostly agreed upon line, and ever since the dapg revival in particular, the line keeps moving.

i'll be honest, i never really saw phanfic as rpf, even though it is. my stance on phanfic is the same as dnps: it's a beautiful expression of art and creativity and is so, so important. they've always been pro-fic (even though we subjected them to some absolutely horrific crack fics), so i don't think 'smutty' fic has ever been gross or too far. they've given their blessing, and, as the conversation has been in fandom communities the last few years, rpf isn't 'for' the people in them, it's for the fans. so i digress.

art is much the same way. they love art! they even included art of them kissing in a tumblr tag video back in the day, so to say that's not allowed especially after they're out is kind of crazy to me.

i think the line with stuff like that was showing it directly to dnp--tagging them in explicit stuff, that kind of thing. but creating it? go for it! it's always been a green light. (i think fans have previously overpoliced this and we lost a lot of great fic, art, and community members over it)

browsing reddit is always a Choice. i've never participated on dnp reddit before but i am aware that it is an entirely different space than here. something that's important, i think (and i think you think this too as you're asking about them), is to respect the fandom rules of the place you partcipate in. tumblr is generally one of the most phan-positive places on the internet, especially publicly facing. we make a lot of relationship jokes, particularly because we run on the assumption it's already true, based on what they've both said publicly (mostly dan).

i won't comment on reddit specifically just because i'm not a part of the community there, but the speculation about dnp online was a Lot for a long time. but the worst part of it was the stalking, the digging into personal lives, the contacting family members--that is what was bad. dnp have always had a connection--and, honestly, they kind of love flexing it and kind of always have. they absolutely play into things now, but they certainly did even way before coming out too. i think a certain level of speculation was to be expected, especially in that era of online fandom. but it wasn't just the 'teenage girls' who cared, the media did too, and so did many others.

i think one of the biggest differences now is 1 the awareness of 'our' past and trying to make up for it, and 2 the broader societal conversations about parasocial relationships.

you see this reflected on the snippets ive seen from dnp reddit and dnp twitter. they tend to be Very 'cautious' about the words they say, often undercutting perfectly reasonable statements with 'but whatever their relationship is'. on one hand, they don't want to cross a line, and i can respect that. on the other hand... it's 2024 babes. they just put out merch of them holding hands. dan's directly, intentionally, and explicitly called phil a bottom on dapg. they reacted to all of the pinofs, made jokes about 'theyre touching', and even joked about the tackle being 'wrestling 👀'. dan posted half-naked catboy pics and showed us phil was taking them. the 'watch your step babygirl' tweet & their reactions to it. phil is credited in WAD. they're making threesome jokes about themselves as a unit. i could go on and on.

to me, there's a few things that have 'moved the line' for us, so to speak.

1 - DAPG returning. for the last few years they specifically were not a duo (for projects) anymore. (and no, not because they hated each other). they just weren't. they wanted to focus on their goals and projects. they didn't have to resurrect dapg, but they chose to. marketing and money aside, they knew that if this went over well, it would well and truly revive the 'dan and phil' brand again. it would be specifically returning to being a duo in the public eye. (however they've also fully embraced this in all aspects, including merch, videos, and general attitude)

2 - pinof reacts. even though they'd been out since 2019, we hadn't had regular joint content from them since before that, therefore, while they had become more comfortable with themselves and their 'outness', we hadn't (in terms of them making explicit gay jokes together). so i really think dnp had to de-fang a lot of the 'theyre touching' of it all, because we didn't really know where we stood on it anymore. i think they succeeded, too. we couldn't be here, with the content of the last 3 months, without them tackling it head on (well, as head on as they're want to do).

3 - dapc. genuinely another big shift. they did this for the real fans. purely a passion project, and a specific choice in doing the handhold. they know what we're like. and this wasn't a brief, unplanned, unscripted moment. it's a specifically blocked out scene. they know it's opening a door, and they chose to. this is doubled by the fucking iconic merch selling, and furthered by phil's twitter likes of arguably romantic phanart, and then dan's full straddle like.

even throughout the current 6 months of revival, the line has moved. i don't know where it will settle. dnp keep moving it, in my opinion, and, genuinely, i don't think it's going to leave much to the imagination. as you say, obviously not the stalking or the contacting, but beyond that? especially here on tumblr? i wouldn't get too worried. obviously people will have their opinions, but as long as you're generally respectful and recognize that humans will see your posts and humans interact with them, i think you're good.

my rule of thumb is anything they intentionally put on the table, we can joke about or at the same level. but in terms of art/fic? go off, live your dreams. dan and phil would want you to.

Oh, I'd love to read the history of trading across various productions of Phantom if you have the time!

Across all productions is a bit much (plus most international productions are for a limited time so they either have filmers there or they don't), but I'll do one for the West End production of Phantom, because I feel like I get a lot of questions about it and it might be handy to just point to a timeline and go "consult this".

So without further ado... a timeline of the various eras of bootlegging in the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera.

1986 - 1988: Classical Era. Phantom has just begun. Videos are present though of poor quality due to generation loss. Many valuable historical artifacts (read: soundboards) are uncovered (read: leaked) in the later years, offering unusual insight into this period.

1988 - 2000: The Dark Ages. Almost no videos in this period. Two years (1988-1990) in which there aren't even any audios. What's going on during this period? Historians (read: phans) are at a loss.

2000 - 2010: The Golden Age. The filmers return. The era of the John Owen-Jones, Earl Carpenter, Matthew Cammelle, Ramin Karimloo, and Gina Beck filmers. Videos start to come in widescreen format and with multiple releases of the same casts. Some of the most well-researched (read: popular) casts in the phandom date from this period.

2010 - 2019: The Drought. The dry period of videos. Few filmers in the West End, perhaps only one or two taking shaky, incomplete videos. If it's a cast member from this period, chances are likely that there's no complete, good quality video of them.

2019 - present: Renaissance. In the wake of COVID-19 (and a little before that), there is a resurgence of West End filmers. Never has the production been blessed with more filmers taking more videos than has ever been seen. Multiple videos of many different casts, including alternates and understudies, are taken in HD. How long will this new golden age last? Time will tell.

DP prompt: Mr. Lancer is formally introduced to Clockwork at parent-teacher night.

Mister Lancer heaves the sigh of an underpaid teacher with a long, long night ahead of them.

So far the parents have been…normal. Expected responses to common patterns of students.

He leans back, away from the desk to rub his face. The next pair of parents has him debating the flask he stashed in his bag.

He had sent a notice for young Mister Fenton to attend with his parents, against common practice. The boy had taken it with resignation lining his very soul. His eyes betrayed something else though. It made him wonder; if something else was happening behind the scenes.

Afterall, why would a child show signs of fear?

Sitting up, Lancer looks over the file again, feeling like he was missing something paramount to the situation.

A knock on the door draws his attention up.

A mop of black hair is barely seen at the bottom of the window.

"Come in!" He calls straightening his notes.

The door opens and Danny trudges in with his shoulders bunched near his ears.

Lancer can't help but notice the slight limp in his gait and the way one arm is curled around his torso.

"Are you alright?" He can't help but ask.

Danny flinches, ducking his head lower to hide behind his bangs.

"'M fine," he mumbles, shuffling his feet.

Lancer frowns, and looks back at the open but empty doorway.

"Are your-"

"No, they're not," Danny cuts in. He stands awkwardly beside the chairs in front of the desk. "Can we just get this over with?"

Lancer blinks at the level of aggression in his voice. He takes a moment to reassess, seeing the lines of tension as more than just fear and shame.

"Have a seat, Mister Fenton," Lancer says, keeping his tone even, his posture loose. Danny balks but does as he's told, curling up on the seat.

"I had wanted to go over a few concerns," Lancer says, making a show of pulling some files from the folder. He watches Danny tense further out of the corner of his eye. "However, I have decided that perhaps a…re-evaluation is in order."

He drops the papers into the trash.

Danny frowns, blue eyes flicking between the bin and his face.

Lancer waits, giving the boy time to collect his thoughts.

"Why?" It's small, barely formed without any malice.

"Because I believe I've never had the full picture," he answers, leaning forward on his desk to bend to Danny's eye level. "And I do see so much potential that's being buried away."

Danny scoffs looking away, "No potential here, I'm just the family fuck up."

Oh, and isn't that something.

"Wake up, Mister Fenton."

He flinches, smooshing his face into his arms before lifting his head.

Green.

Danny blinks.

"Oh Great Expectations," Lancer sighs with relief. Knelt beside him in the blue grass, "How do you feel?"

"Uh…" he looks around, sitting up properly.

They're in the Zone, half the class, minus Tucker and Sam. Sprawled out in the grassy field.

"What happened?" He asks instead. He tries to remember, pain lancing through his head at the effort.

"Whereizit?!" Dash shouts sitting up with a jolt.

"Easy, easy," Lancer grabs Danny's shoulder to steady him. "You hit your head pretty hard."

"I did?" Danny blinks the spots from his vision, rubbing his eye with the heel of his hand.

Somewhere further away, Paulina stares up at the drifting purple clouds. Muttered Spanish filling the air.

"What happened?" Danny asks, giving up trying to remember anything. He pushes himself to his feet. "Is everyone else okay?"

"Ah, you should stay sitting," Lancer says, reaching out to grab him. "Your head-"

"'M fine," Danny waves off, taking a step out of reach. He looks over the field.

Everyone is awake, and either getting to their feet to gather closer or staring in open shock at everything.

A brush of cold runs down his spine, making him gasp.

Danny pivots, striking a hard and fast punch to the center of the floating eyeball that had appeared behind him.

"Fenton?" Dash squeaks.

Danny shakes his hand out as he looks down at the bent over Observant.

"Why do I get the feeling this is your fault?" Danny asks them. He can feel the stares of the students, but he doesn't look back.

"Lor-" Danny grabs the front of his cloak to pull them upright.

"Skip the formalities, what did you do?"

"It has been- Ah- discussed that The King's Advisory Court needed to be…addressed." The Observant places wrinkled hands on Danny's and forces him to let go.

Danny hums.

"We have made the executive decision to assign members to-"

Danny punches them again, this time in the stomach. They double over with a wheezing gasp.

"So kidnapping humans to the Realms was your bright idea?"

"They are loyal to Lord Phantom," they gasp, glaring up at him

"You mean overzealous fans," Danny corrects, he leans over the Observant. "Send us home."

Danny rubs his temples, silently begging the building migraine to stop.

Unfortunately, that's not how migraines work.

His parents continue their screaming argument with Mister Lancer.

At this point they're so off from the original topic that he can't even remember what set them off to begin with.

(It was how to properly ensure the students safety.)

More unfortunately, they're in front of the entire school population in the gymnasium.

"You good?" Sam stage whispers from her place on the side of the makeshift stage.

"I'd rather deal with the Observants," he hisses back.

Sam winces.

Danny hiccups on a breath of cold air, as a presence solidifies behind him.

"Good, then maybe we can-" Danny grabs the hand that's placed on his shoulder and flips the Observant over, slamming them bodily between the adults.

The ensuing silence is deafening.

"Ancients, I swear if Johnny is nearby, he's getting souped for a month." Danny mutters walking closer to the ghost.

"Danny?" Maddie asks, a little bit shocked but something like pride in her eyes.

"Nuh-uh," Danny puts his hand up. "You're not touching this one."

Jack frowns, "But it's a-"

"I don't care-"

The Observant groans, trying to sit up. He stomps on their shoulder, pinning them to the stage.

"-and you shut up, I'll deal with you in a second."

The eyeball glares at him, "I will not be treated in such a manner."

Danny pulls out his thermos, "You want to be souped?"

The Observant holds their hands up, palms out.

"That's what I thought, now you two-"

"Did you just negotiate with a ghost?" Maddie asks, a little gobsmacked.

"Yes, now you two are going to pack your weapons up into the GAV and go home."

She frowns. "This is an educational-"

"Yeah no, it stopped being educational 30 minutes ago when you started a screaming match with Mr. Lancer."

"We did not-"

"I do have to agree," Principal Ishiyama says, watching the ghost warily as she steps on stage. "It would be best if you two were to leave, this assembly has officially lost its purpose. Or we can have you forcibly removed."

Maddie glares at her while Jack frowns, gaze bouncing back and forth between the ghost and Danny.

Danny stares at the glowing sticky note sitting innocuously on his notebook.

"Mister Fenton," Lancer says, drawing his attention up, "since you seem to be so studiously staring at your notes, perhaps you know the answer to my question."

Danny blinks.

He looks at the note once more before looking up.

"Is it 42?"

The class erupts in giggles as Lancer sighs. "That may be the answer to life but no that doesn't answer my question. Miss Sanchez, perhaps you know."

Danny tunes out to pick up the green sticky. Glowing blue ink glitters as it moves.

A single hand may lift a stone, but many can move the boulder.

Danny flips the note over, and back.

"What's that?" Tucker whispers, leaning forward on his desk to be closer to Danny.

"Bewildering, I need to visit Grandfather I guess."

"The mysterious one that you never mentioned before the C.A.T.S?" Sam asks.

"Mister Fenton," Lancer walks over. "There is no note passing in my class."

"Pass it over," Lancer holds his hands out.

Huffing a sigh, Danny passes it to Lancer.

Or tries to.

The note passes through Lancer's hand.

Lancer blinks.

Danny blinks.

Lancer grabs the note again, fingers passing through.

"Wuthering Heights!" Lancer frowns, trying once more. "I'm losing my touch."

Danny flips the note and wiggles it. The sticky note does not make a noise. It does glow brighter however.

Lancer grabs Danny's wrists to move the note around to see it better.

"...Mister Fenton," he stares at the glittery ink, leaning closer.

"...yes Mr. Lancer?"

"This doesn't look like it's English."

"That's 'cause it's not."

"How the fuck-"

It's a blessing and a curse, the phandom has a bad rap for taking a dumb phrase and running with it (pro tip, hey buddy you in london etc) but this? This is just for us and it's just for fun.

4. Which comment has had the most impact on your writing?

I'm...............hmm. I feel really bad because to be honest? I can't really think of a singular comment. I did get some really wonderful comments on my first ever fic, and that really encouraged me to keep on going. It don't remember the content, but I remember the feeling that those comments gave me. And I will always be grateful that these kind strangers on the internet were so supportive of my shitty fanfics.

8. Talk about any friends/connections you've made as a fic writer.

Did you mean the entire Phandom? lmao. I think I've met p much every friend in the Phantom that I have through Invisobang last year. I'm so incredibly lucky and blessed to have met and get to know these people. I love you so much <3 Though....I think I have met some friends adjacent to my rvb smut lmao

12. What is your favorite theme/subject matter/trope/ship to write about? Why?

I................really like time travel OTL. For a lot of reasons. I have this weird....nostalgia for the past and a profound...not regret but. Well, that saying of youth is wasted on the young? I get it. I often think about my high school days and how I would do it differently. Be more true to myself, not try to change myself to make people like me, things like that. And I also think fondly of it too. Like, one of my favourite memories in life is when my sibling had their friend over to play silent hill 2. and they ALWAYS made sure that I was there too to watch as well. We would order sushi take out and walk it home and eat while Steph played and I was SO SCARED but it was so good and I felt so special and cared for and loved. I think about it a lot. Life was simpler back then. Sometimes I cry when I think about it.

So yeah. Idk. the 2000s was a decade that I think about a lot, probably because that was the decade that I grew up in.
