NAME: Keziah Emem GENDER & PRONOUNS: Cis Woman / She/Her AGE & DATE OF BIRTH: 30 years old / March 23rd HOMETOWN: Vancouver, Canada TIME IN GREAT FALLS: 18 months RESIDENCE: Downtown OCCUPATION: Owner and Lead Yoga Instructor at Fitness Republic
BACKSTORY —
Keziah had always done things in excess — her actions, her relationships, her life — she never took a moment to simply be.
From the moment she could walk and talk, she had always been expected to be another version of herself... a better version of herself — a version that her mother, Grace, wanted her to be. They were all each other had: it was always just mom and Keziah. Her father had left before she was born, so it never occurred to her there could be anybody else but the woman who raised her. They were luckier than most — they had a roof over their heads, always had a meal on the table, and she was taught to be grateful for everything she received. It wasn’t until her mother met Willie Murphy; he was the type of man that you’d see on the street and you knew who he was. He had a finger in every jar of the city — he knew everybody worth knowing, which was why her mother fell in love with him, she figured. He knew how to charm and impress, but he didn’t come without baggage… with Willie, came his son, Micah.
Now, Micah was a different story. Where Willie was the epitome of his community, Micah forged a path in the opposite direction. He hated Keziah, and he hated her mother, the moment he met them. Keziah, however, loved with her whole heart… even for those who were undeserving. For every slammed door in her face, or ever unkind word thrown her way by her new brother, she would work twice as hard to earn his love. The relationship with her mother grew strained when Willie and Grace finally got married. It was suddenly her fault that Micah didn’t like her, that she didn’t try hard enough or wasn’t doing the right things. Through high school, it didn’t get easier — and all of a suden, she had all of these pressures: she was expected to get good grades, be everything and do everything, all the while attempt to manufacture a relationship with her step-brother that just didn’t exist. Did she buckle? Well, it was Keziah — what do you think? Of course not. She did everything in excess, remember? From the dance troupe to the student council, but that only made Micah dislike her more. Willie would whirl insults and ask his son why he wasn’t doing more, or achieving more, ‘Just look at Keziah!’ The comparisons were the nail in the coffin of their lack-of relationship.
Her home begun to feel like a melting pot: with the growing tensions between Willie and Micah, and Micah and Keziah, and Keziah and Grace — it was bound to explode, and she did not want to bear witness to that; once she graduated, she was ready to leave. College had given her the freedom she’d always wanted, bar for the holidays when she’d visit home and years of insecurities and anxieties came tumbling back. But during her summer vacation, she resisted the urge to return home and instead, did what every good college student did: had a European summer. From Mykonos to Vienna, she saw it all. And while she fell in love with every city that she visited, it was Paris that captured her heart. Thank God for mandatory French lessons through school, and the invention of Duolingo; Keziah felt… like she belonged there. And every summer vacation thereafter resulted in spending more time in Paris, exploring everything it had to offer, and venturing out to the rest of France. She was a world away, and she truly felt at peace.
When she had completed her undergraduate degree, certificate in hand, she told her mother she would, in Grace’s words: ‘be throwing away four years and thousands of dollars to become a yoga instructor’; it had been the most liberating and terrifying thing she’d ever done. For once in her life, Keziah hadn’t sought her approval or felt the need to make someone else happy — this decision was for her, and her alone.
The city of Paris — the place she called home. Home really was where the heart was; whenever she was elsewhere, she wanted to be right here, in this city. It was here, that Keziah came into her own — living the life she wanted, with no hang-ups or attachments, no commitments or promises to be kept. Here, she could be anybody she wanted, and it was here, that she built up her reputation as a yoga instructor. Her classes were often booked out, and drew the attention of many publications and media in recent years. After all, it was Keziah; expect no less from her. With a growing following and a building reputation, she was achieving everything she could have possibly wanted… but why did she still feel like she was running away?
It may have taken her a few years, but eventually, she made the inevitable decision to move closer to home. Her mother wasn’t getting any younger, and spontaneous trips once every six months wouldn’t cut it anymore; she wanted to be there for her, for however longer she had her. Despite their strained relationship, Keziah wanted to ensure she didn’t cut her family off, entirely. After all, they were all she had left. It was safe to assume that Keziah would relocate to Toronto, or even back to her old stomping ground of Vancouver, but she needed a clean slate. She didn’t know how it happened, and she probably wouldn’t be able to tell you how it happened either, but she found her way to Montana, to the city of Great Falls. Putting down roots somewhere altogether different, and unique from the places she’d lived thus far.
Upon moving into the town, and after years of living off instant ramen, she saved enough to open up her own fitness studio in town. She set up her studio space, fulfilling the one goal she’d been working towards since she left college. With that, also came the ability to visit her mother every other month, attempting to rebuild what remained of their fractured relationship with one another; even if it meant dealing with her nightmare of a step-brother, Micah, on occasion. Willie, definitely proved to only grow wiser with age, finally stepping up to defend his step-daughter against his son, and at times, also his wife.
Now, Great Falls had never been a part of her plan — but how often does life ever actually go to plan? With her own studio, an ever-changing, yet improving relationship with her mother, a step-father who supported her decisions, and a new place to call home: Keziah has, finally, begun to slow down.

Tips To Choose The Best Ubud Luxury Villa
Bali is a beautiful tourist destination for any occasion. Apart from the exotic beaches, coral reefs and glorious temples, Bali is also known for its yoga and meditation retreats. If you are planning for a vacation to Bali, the town of Ubud is a must visit. It is located in central Bali and is popular as an arts and crafts hub.
Ubud has a number of museums like Blanco Renaissance Museum, Neka Art Museum and Puri Lukisan Museum. The Ubud Monkey Forest is a sacred nature reserve that houses the temple of death, and approximately 340 crab-eating monkeys. The best way to enjoy the natural beauty of Ubud is to rent one of the various luxury villas.
Luxury villas in Ubud offer the perfect environment and facilities to enjoy your vacation. Equipped with all modern facilities including swimming pool, kitchen, spa and yoga center, they offer you a private space to relax and have a peaceful time. There are a number of luxury villas in Ubud to choose from. Choosing the right one will make your stay worthwhile. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best luxury villa in the town of Ubud:
Mykonos villas
-Identify your Needs- You should first decide the purpose of your visit and then look for one which will best match your needs. Your choice of villa will depend on whether you are looking for a romantic secluded holiday accommodation or you want to have a lot of adventure while enjoying the luxury of these villas. Start your search once you are sure about what you are looking for.
-Fix a Budget- Luxury villas located either close to the beach or in the center of the town will usually be more expensive. Popularity, size, peak holiday season and facilities provided are other factors which determine the price of these villas. You can set a budget and look for villas that offer good amenities in that price.
Mykonos villas for rent
-Pick a Location- If you are looking for a peaceful abode, you can look for villas at some distance from the city. They are best to enjoy the peaceful and authentic side of Bali. However, if you want to be at a convenient distance from restaurants and malls, look for something in the middle city. You can pick the location depending on the main purpose of your holiday.
-Research- Shortlist a few luxury villas and do proper research about them. Check their websites to know how old they are, the type of services they offer, process of booking, payment options and other relevant information. Read feedback given by people who have stayed there earlier. You can also check their ratings and reviews on various travel forums and websites.

Where to go on holiday for September sun this year
Following the August rush comes the quieter month of September, when the days are still long and the evenings balmy. As the milder temperatures start to set in across Europe, whilst the post-lockdown crowds have already emptied out, here’s our pick of shoulder season hotspots where summer isn’t over just yet…
The Greek Islands
Picture-perfect cliff-top villages with colourful cupolas and fuschia flowers climbing up white-washed walls, impossibly blue water at its warmest after several months of scorching sunshine, the Greek Islands still enjoy the best of golden hour with temperatures averaging between 20-25ºC in September.
Take in the best sunset views in Santorini from the all-villa Canaves Oia Epitome.
Spend the day on the sundeck at Boheme Hotel overlooking the Aegean Sea, cooled by the Cycladic breeze after wandering the windmill-lined coast of Mykonos.
Seek shade beneath old cedar trees at Naxian Collection, a chic cluster of sugar-cube villas on Naxos.
Tumblr media
The Balearic Islands
Hide out in the hundreds of cove beaches – or calas – along the rugged coast of Ibiza, which is still white hot in September with highs of 28ºC during the warmest part of the days. Also coming in hot with highs of 27ºC is the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, with its cliff-fringed coastline, white sandy beaches, and long stretches of countryside dotted with olive trees and citrus groves. For the brightest blue seas you’ll see this side of the Indian Ocean, opt for Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands – also with averages of 27ºC during the day.
Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay is the place to see and be seen, with all the grown-up glamour of the White Isle with its laid-back luxury aesthetic.
To experience Mallorca in all its rugged coastline glory, the converted 19th-century fortress turned boutique hotel Cap Rocat overlooks the Bay of Palma, with its own private rock cliff beach offering direct access to the sea, jetty and salt water pool.
For more of a Mallorcan countryside retreat, while the days away beneath cypresses and lemon trees at Finca Serena.
Relax in the comfort of your cabana on one of the best stretches of sand on Formentera at Gecko Hotel & Beach Club, or re-balance with the hotel’s resident yoga guru in a morning seaside session.
Tumblr media
Sicily & The Aeolian Islands
Nestled between Europe and Africa, the largest island in the Mediterranean is full of dramatically located cliff-top villages, gently faded baroque buildings, cultural treasures, wild beaches and brooding volcanoes – not to mention the best blend of East and West cuisine. With average highs of 26ºC during September, there is still plenty of sunshine and blue skies to be enjoyed at more pleasant temperatures on Sicily and its surrounding islands.
To immerse yourself in Sicilian culture, as well as the landscape, stay at the 200-year-old farmhouse Susafa, now a family-run rustic boutique hotel. Help with the olive harvest from the middle of September onwards, which is pressed for the hotel’s own organic oil.
Hop over to the small Aeolian island of Vulcano, located about 25km north of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Set on a rocky headland with a view that encompasses the entire Aeolian archipelago, soak up the Sicilian sunshine from the seawater-filled infinity pools at Therasia Resort Sea & Spa.
Castaway on Italy’s undiscovered Pantelleria Island, where the Tunisian coast is visible on clear days and the land is characterised by volcanic activity. Sip on passito – the honey sweet local dessert wine – by the pool at porcelain-white dammuso Sikelia.
Tumblr media
Croatia
With its secret golden shores, fortified citadels, rolling vineyards, and more than 1,200 islets, Croatia is not only one of the most temperate destinations in Europe during September (with highs of 24ºC) but also one of the safest Mediterranean countries to visit this year – as one of the countries exempt from UK quarantine rules.
For some of the best views of Dubrovnik old town, and just a short stroll away from the ancient east gate, Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik is as rich in history as it is close to it – made up of an original 1913 royal villa and a sleek contemporary wing.
In prime position beside the glamorous superyacht marina, D-Resort Šibenik glimmers with glass walls for spellbinding Adriatic views. Keep things secluded with an Exclusive Villa and spend the day beside your private pool, or step aboard the hotel’s own boat to explore the cerulean seas and red coral of the Kornati Islands.
The charm of medieval Istria meets pared back luxury at San Canzian Village & Hotel, perched up on the Croatian peninsula near Buje in the medieval village of Mužolini Donji. Take your taste buds on an adventure by joining a truffle hunting expedition in the nearby forests – hunting season starts from mid September.
Tumblr media
Portugal
With the grape harvest in full swing, September is one of the best times to visit Portugal‘s many wineries, and enjoy sightseeing its red-cliffed coastline and idyllic whitewashed Moorish villages at more moderate temperatures of 19-26ºC. The sunniest spots are down south, dotted along the impossibly blue waters of the Algarve coastline.
With its dusky pink walls adorned with domes and statues, Pousada Palácio de Estoi is a Rococo palace bathed in Algarve sunshine.
Unwind on the sugar-white sands of Carvalhal Beach, renowned as one of the country’s best beaches – just a short shuttle ride away from Quinta Da Comporta – Wellness Boutique Resort, where each room has a luxurious beach hut feel, with rustic-style furniture drawn from a natural colour palette.
Just 40 minutes from Porto, Carmo’s Boutique Hotel is wonderfully placed to discover the traditions, cultural heritage and architecture of the beautiful Minho region of Portugal – and a number of the rooms have views across the Lima River Valley.

A childhood of travelling Mediterranean Spain has made me a sun baby and after a decade in England, I have some serious wanderlust. Here’s my current bucket list of places I want to explore ASAP (in order of most to least desperately) and why.
1. Bali, Indonesia
I’m actually planning a trip to Bali next year and I couldn’t be more excited. To me, Bali is a dream come true: its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and dirt cheap luxury villas spell paradise. I’m hoping to explore Ubud (made famous by “Eat Pray Love” starring Julia Roberts), Canggu, the numerous religious temples and art galleries like Anang Rai art gallery and Neka Art museum.
Bali is a well-known holiday destination among Australians for its surf as well as its natural beauty. It’s also popular for yoga retreats, so I’m hoping to go away for some well-needed aerial yoga to practise my trapeze and silks as well as catch some waves in the sun. *sigh*
  2.Thailand
Another country I’ve been gagging to explore for years. I was very jealous when my close friend went travelling across Thailand for a few months with his then girlfriend, so I’ll definitely ask for some tips when I go and hopefully it’ll be some day soon.
I get the impression that the UK is somewhat conflicted in its stereotypes of Thailand as a travel destination. With the image of numerous idyllic islands like Phuket and Ko Tao sporting dazzling beaches and rain-forests set against the image of seedy city strip joints, prostitution and dangerous, sweaty traffic, I think Thailand scares some people. This reaction fairly understandable, however wherever someone is considered rich simply from the area they come from is going to be harder on the locals than the tourists.
Pai, in the Mai Hong Soon province is a small town that is considered a bubbling goldmine of culture, beauty and cheap activities, including hot springs, markets, hammock cafes and waterfalls. It’s very laid-back. I’d also be very keen to visit Railay Beach on the west peninsula, go island hopping and visit Bangkok for a bit more of a buzz.
3. Budapest, Hungary
I was going to visit Budapest this summer for the music festival Budafest, however it clashed with Boomtown in Hampshire, UK. Budapest is widely renowned for its decadent architecture, food, as well as its rich and exciting cultural attractions. I, like anyone else, travel for three main reasons: food, nature and culture. To me, Budapest is an irresistible city, with its famous thermal winter baths, markets full of street food and bright, gothic castles.
Hungary’s mistreatment of the refugees that attempt to pass through it is very upsetting, however they aren’t the only country guilty, the UK especially have their role to play. It’s quite hard to find much information online on the the current refugee situation there now so when I go, possibly in January 2019 if I can gather the funds, I’d really like to get a picture of what’s happening.
Hungarian culture isn’t something I’m very knowledgeable on, so researching and learning a bit of Hungarian in preparation for a visit to its capital city would be a wonderful opportunity to soak up its culture and history, most of it shrouded in mystery to the average Brit.
4. Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is a really special place to me; it’s my home-city. My parents moved when I was two. I’ve only been there twice since, but it’s the coolest city I’ve ever been to. It feels like home as soon as you step off the plane. Everywhere you look you’re greeted with music, art, architecture and food. Among its most famous attractions are Gaudi’s church of the “Sagrada Família” (along his many other works), Primavera Sound festival, the Gothic Quarter known for its in tact medieval style buildings, and La Rambla walk; a renowned boulevard full of street performers and market stalls. Unfortunately, La Rambla is now famous for its terror attack in 2017, but is generally considered very safe, even from pick-pockets.
Despite Cataluña’s ongoing political conflict with the Spanish government and frequent riots, Barcelona is home to a wealthy range of different cultures and music festivals. It has become very touristy all year round which is a source of anguish for most the locals but I couldn’t recommend it more. It’d be impossible to go and not get something out of it, no matter what you go looking for. Another unmissable attraction is the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art. Also, due to it’s growing multiculturalism and university, Barcelona has become vegetarian and vegan friendly, which is uncommon for the Spanish region, even now.
5. Japan
What isn’t there to do in Japan? I’ve wanted to go to Japan ever since learned what a capsule hotel was. Of course there’s so much more to see than itty-bitty hotel pods, such as Mount Fuji, Kiyomizu-Dera temple and national parks like Hokkaido and Chubu region. Tokyo in itself, is a big attraction.
A mirror of New York or London, Tokyo is familiar and yet anything but the same. I have always wanted to try out a ramen vending machine and visit its stunning contemporary art galleries like Mori Art Museum and Tokyo Metropolitan Teian art gallery.
Japan has such a rich and varied culture that its hard to say what is most appealing. To me, it’s nature and art, for others it’s the technology and consumerism of many of its cities. Culturally, I would say it’s best attractions are Okunoshima, “Rabbit Island”, Hirosaki Castle, its gourmet sushi restaurants like Sushi Yoshino and Kamata Sushitoku and the magical Ashikaga flower park, which looks like it could be straight out of a Studio Ghibli film.
Being one of the world’s leading pioneers in technology, Japanese culture does have its dark side. A lot of tourists visit Japan for other “attractions” like Hiroshima and Aokigahara “Suicide Forest”. Similar to many Western cultures, social media and the internet as a whole takes back what it gives and many young people are becoming vulnerable to its pressures.
Japan has a very low crime rate and a fairly introverted culture, the main social problem that plagues the locals isn’t social at all: people are lonely. That being said, from a traveller’s point of view, these problems are small in comparison to most countries.
Being the birthplace of two of my all-time favourite artists Ando Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai, even if it didn’t have its wealth of culture and natural beauty, I still wouldn’t be able to resist it.
6. Greece
Earlier this year I was planning to quit my day job and go island hopping round Greece with my boyfriend. The dream. It ended up not happening like most of this year’s travel plans and half of the country ended up setting on fire around the time I was hoping to go anyway. Despite this Greece has been in heart for nearly a year now, ever since I set my sights on it.
Travelling the idyllic Greek islands has been a popular choice for all sorts of travellers for decades now. It’s warm, beautiful and affordable. Due to Greece’s near-collapsed economy, like Spain, it has become heavily reliant on tourism as an income. The accommodation is cheap and varied, as well as the cuisine. It’s hard not to be tempted by the dirt cheap flight prices coming up to summer especially when you start googling and see the beaches in the peak of summer.
Like Hungary, I know very little of Greek culture, but I’ve already fallen in love with the idea of backpacking round Mykonos and Crete. Many people are tempted by the ancient Greek ruins and history of Athens or the buzzing night-club culture aimed at British tourists. I mostly want to get lost in the small towns and villages of Milos, the pink beach of Elafonisi, Crete and the Messalina lake, Kefalonia. The only problem would probably be staying alive on a vegan diet, considering lamb and feta are the main components of Greece’s gorgeous dishes.
7. Norway
Norway’s current main attraction for me, is my friend Ane, a native Norwegian I used to live with in England, now residing in Oslo with her partner. Being a Nordic country, Norway seems less like travelling and more like stepping into the game Skyrim. Though maybe with less wolf attacks.
While Norway is expensive to visit, it’s more a place one would visit for its “outdoorsy” stuff. This would be its famous ‘Fjords’, Northern lights and extreme sports winter sports like snowboarding and skiing rather than shopping or clubbing. It’s hard not to be sporty in Norway, there seems little else to do apart from appreciate the country’s vast beauty.
Trondheim, Norway’s third largest town is popular to visit, containing the Nidaros Cathedral and Nidelva River, alongside which are beautiful multi-coloured waterside houses on stilts. Husedalen “Waterfall” valley and Sognefjord are also popular, the latter being Norways largest glacial sea valley. Another attraction among hikers is Trolltunga, a tough climb to reach a cliff jutting out 700 metres horizontally in midair above lake Ringedalsvatnet.
While the price of living is higher, the quality of life is much better all round, Norway has few socio-economic struggles as a nation and is is one of the world’s leading countries for renewable energy and recycling.
Norwegian culture is conservative and quiet, but one of the most advanced and forward thinking in Europe. I find the language fascinating and would love to learn more than just the commands I had to learn to walk Ane’s dog, Dokki, though I doubt I’d have the opportunity to get much practice since most Norwegians are proficient, if not fluent in English.
9. Sri Lanka
Famed for its nature and diverse landscapes, Sri Lanka has had my heart since I was a child. What appeals to most is the animal sanctuaries and conservationist opportunities, as well as the numerous Buddhist ruins like Temples of the Tooth and Dambulla Cave Temple.
A main point of interest would be Sigiriya, the ruins of an ancient city and rock fortress nestled in forest and Yala National Park. The multitude of opportunities to work in animal conservation charities like the Kalametiya bird sanctuary and Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage are unmissable.
Other landmarks are Ella Rock, Little Adam’s Peak and Pidurangala Rock; Sri Lanka is famed for it its variety of climate, ranging from rainforest to desert and home to a multitude of beautiful geological formations.
Until 2009, Sri Lanka had been stuck in civil war for over 25 years. With newfound peace, it is considered very safe to travel. Theft and violent crime is nearly unheard of, but credit card fraud and harassment from street vendors or scammers is common. It’s recommended that poorly lit beaches like Negombo and Hikkaduwa are best avoided at night by single travellers. These areas considered more dangerous for women.
Colombo, the capital city, is a diamond of culture and colour. With over 70% of the Sri Lankan population being Buddhist, there are numerous sacred and world heritage sites all over Sri Lanka, providing opportunity to learn about Theravada Buddhism, directly translating to “School of Elders” and inspired by the oldest of Buddhist scriptures; the Tipitaka.
*Edit: I originally wrote this in December 2018 but didn’t publish it. While my knowledge on these topics has expanded, I thought it would be best to leave the original text relatively untouched and do a more updated version in the weeks to come.

Naxos, Greece
Day 38 - Mykonos to Naxos
In the early morning I caught the high-speed ferry from Mykonos to the island of Naxos. The ferries - Sea Jets - are passenger-only ferries, clocking in at up to 45 knots at their fastest! Naxos, my next stop, is the largest and greenest of the Cyclade Islands. I would be meeting my good friend Megan on the island later that day - who was flying in from Toronto to join me in Greece for the next 10 days.
Megan and I chose to go to Naxos - a lesser known Greek Island next to its popular neighbours Mykonos and Santorini - as we had heard wonderful things about the island’s natural beauty and terrific food. Given that the island was less of a tourism hub, we were also hoping to experience the local culture in a more laid-back way. Since we are also active travellers (what happens when both of us have lived in the Canadian Rockies!), we were also excited to explore the hiking trails around the island.
Tumblr media
Port of Naxos
In the late morning I checked into our beautiful Air Bnb for the next 5 days. Located in Chora, the old town of Naxos near to the ferry port, we were quick walk up from the port and the ocean. I happened to arrive in Naxos on Ohi Day (Ober 28th) - an annual national holiday also known as “no” day. This holiday commemorates the day in 1940 when the Greek prime minister rejected the ultimatum given by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini - who had demanded that Axis forces enter Greece and occupy strategic locations. In response to Greece’s rejection of this ultimatum - Italian forces attacked the Greek border, marking the start of Greece’s participation in World War 2. I witnessed what was clearly a day of true national pride - complete with Greek flags strung around town and a parade going up Main Street in Chora.
I had a late lunch along along the sunny portside promenade. Shaped like a semi-circle, with the city rising above it like an amphitheatre, the port of Naxos has countless Greek restaurants, pubs and little shops lining the street across from the ocean. On the hill above the port is an old Venetian castle, standing like a sentinel at the top of the town.
Megan arrived late in the evening by ferry - she had travelled for almost a full day to get from Toronto to Naxos! I picked her up at the port and we grabbed a few delicious crepes before crashing for the night.
Day 39
We had a leisurely start to our day - Megan’s well-deserved jet-lag recovery time! - and began to explore the island. Naxos had a much more relaxed feel compared to the other Greek Islands, and clearly has few tourists in the fall. At breakfast we were surrounded by Greek families, with not an English word spoken anywhere nearby!
It was much more common in Naxos to find menus or signage completely in Greek, and the language barrier was occasionally an issue! The expression “its all Greek to me” - began to fully make sense, as even the alphabet is much different. Overall, this wasn’t much of an issue, as we generally found that everyone we encountered was quite friendly and willing to help us out. (With Google translate as an occasional backup!)
Tumblr media
Cliffs on the edge of Chora
We walked to cliffs at the edge of Chora, and were amazed by the mountainous landscape around Naxos - where small white churches can be seen perched on the top of steep hills. Naxos is a rich agricultural island, with olive groves, expansive pastures with countless goats and sheep, fruit trees and vineyards.
We continued to the Portara (or “Great Door”) a massive marble doorway at the edge of Chora’s port. It is believed on Naxos that the Portara is all that remains of the temple of the Greek god Apollo - aside from the doorway, there is nothing but a few crumbled blocks of marble left. It is truly incredible that this arch has stood the test of time, as it was built over 2500 years ago.
Tumblr media
Sunset at the Temple of Apollo
In the evening, Megan and I split a bottle of Naxian wine on the hill next to the Portara, watching the sun go down. It was pretty cool to be at Apollo’s temple for the sunset - as according to Greek mythology, the god Apollo was responsible for the daily movement of the sun, pulling it across the sky behind a horse-drawn chariot. Following the sunset, we had a few drinks at Bossa, a terrific portside pub, before having delicious Greek souvlaki and gyros for dinner.
Day 40
Today was our hiking day - we headed out in the morning to climb Mount Zeus - the highest mountain in the Cyclade Islands. We had blue skies and bright sun as we caught a local bus into the mountain village of Filoti, located right in the middle of island (complete with some Greek music being blasted by our bus driver!)
Tumblr media
Beginning the hike up Mount Zeus
In Ancient Greek Mythology, Mount Zeus was believed to have been the birthplace of Zeus, King of the Gods. There is a dark, rocky cave halfway up the mountain, where Zeus is said to have spent his childhood
Megan and I hiked along switchback slopes next to terraces of olive trees, frequently moving through wire gates meant to control the movement of sheep and goats, who roam around the base of the mountain. In the distance, we often heard the tinkle of bells around their necks, and sometimes unexpectedly stumbled into large flocks blocking our path!
Tumblr media
There were literally HUNDREDS of these guys along our hike
The switchbacks gradually gave way to a scree slope scattered with thistle bushes, which had a terrific view of the summit ahead. We began a bit of a scramble, clamouring over the loosely shifting rocks with our hands and feet - trying to keep an eye on the ever-dwindling path markers!
We arrived at the rocky, wind blown summit in the early afternoon. With the clear sky, we were able to see many of the nearby Cyclades, including Mykonos, Paros and Ios. We enjoyed our packed lunch and took in the incredible view.
Tumblr media
At the summit of Mount Zeus
We sped back down the mountain to catch the last bus back into Chora. This involved a few shortcuts, accidentally leading us into large fields of mountain goats and sheep (much to Megan’s displeasure. Something I learned about my friend this trip is that farm animals = not her favourite thing!). We made it to the bus just on time, with the help of Google Translate and some sympathetic locals.
Tumblr media
After such an awesome day, we had a bit of an odd evening - helping a fellow passenger on the bus in medical distress, followed by being served raw fish for dinner (smoked fish in Greece apparently does not mean cooked), ending with a stray cat throwing up under my chair. All manner of strange things in a day of travel!
Day 41
We headed to the beautiful nearby beach of Agios Prokopios in the morning. Unfortunately our good weather from yesterday had vanished, with the temperature significantly dropping. The day was windy and cloudy, but us Canadians - determined to make the most of any weather - stuck out the fall weather for a few hours. (This may have involved a sweater being used as makeshift pants and beach yoga to stay warm!)
Tumblr media
We walked back along the beaches to return to Chora, with the ocean wind whipping at our backs. We quickly layered up back at our Air Bnb before walking around the little shops and grocers nearby. This was only met with partial success - as throughout our time in Naxos, Megan and I constantly struggled to understand what time everything opened and closed! Seemingly on “island time”, and not targeted towards tourism, the stores and shops of Naxos had (or so it appeared!) completely random hours of operation. It began to be quite comical, as we always seemed to be going to the wrong place at the wrong time, or trying to go to a restaurant when there was not another soul in sight!
Tumblr media
One of the local shops across from our Air Bnb
In the evening, we had a few drinks at what had become our local watering hole, Bossa, waiting for the restaurants to open up! Still chilled from our day on the (less than warm) beach, we ended up going back to our Air Bnb early, bundling up and watching a movie.
Day 42
We woke to yet another turn of weather - such is shoulder season in the Greek Islands! Taking advantage of the morning sun, we decided to give a beach day a second attempt, this time at Agios Georgios - just South of Chora. Fortunately, we were sheltered enough for it to be the perfect temperature, and we spent the day relaxing in the sunshine - complete with reading, watching the windsurfers offshore, and even squeezing in a beach workout!
Our final evening in Naxos we went to traditional family-run restaurant, tucked away in an alley of the old-city. We had a delicious meal of Greek Salad, feta cheese, saganaki and potatoes (is there such a thing as too much cheese?). However, we clearly underestimated Greek portion sizes - yet again - and were only able to finish about half of our meal!
Tumblr media
Final evening in Naxos
Overall, we loved Naxos. It was nice to be in Chora long enough to have a bit of a routine - such as daily trips to our go-to places for coffee and drinks! It was also great to get a feel for Greek Island culture in a relaxed, low-key way - particularly as it was a less tourism-focused island in shoulder season. As an added bonus, the natural beauty of Naxos was simply stunning.

From Navpaktos to Ithaca and Cephalonia.
July 15th …
Following on from my last blog…… which was quite some time ago.!!! …we had just welcomed our dear friends Gaybrielle and John on board along with our four gorgeous girls – Rebecca, Emily, Nikita and Lucy.
The new “crew” had joined us in Navpaktos, which is in the Gulf of Corinth, where a driver had delivered them from Athens. So after a fabulous evening of celebrations we headed out of the tiny port the following morning.  Navpaktos is such a beautiful little harbour, and was ideal for stocking up the boat and preparing for the next leg of our journey.
Tumblr media
Awanui parked inside the tiny port of Navpaktos.
Once under the Rion-Antirion Bridge, we were in the Ionian Sea and on our way to the island of Ithaca.  This impressive bridge is fairly new, and one that the Greeks are very proud of.
Tumblr media
The girls admiring the beauty of the Rion-Antirion Bridge.
One of our generators had been loosing power and we needed an electrical component.  We made our way the town of Vathy on the island of Ithaca, as we thought the part was being delivered to us there.
Tumblr media
Les girls on the bow with Vathy ahead of us.
We didn’t think the town of Vathy had that much appeal, but we walked around to explore it and later Gaybrielle and I took the E-bikes and went to the top of the hill behind the town to see a bit more of the area.
The E-bikes have been fabulous to have on the boat as it means you can go that little bit further when exploring and of course with a lot less effort (and much more fun) which in the heat of the Greek Summer is very appealing.
Tumblr media
Chris, Gaybrielle and John - on our way to a taverna for lunch.
Tumblr media
Nikita, Emily, Bex and Lucy.
That afternoon we took the tender further up the inlet and found a delightful waterside taverna, with a thatched roof under the shade of some trees, and had a delicious lunch.
Tumblr media
Chris and John securing the tender beside the Taverna.
Tumblr media
Our happy group of travellers ready for lunch.
Tumblr media
Later - looking lovely with a their Asperols.
Tumblr media
YiaMas ! Cheers !
It was a huge coincidence when we discovered that a past boyfriend of Rebecca’s, Devon, was crewing on a beautiful yacht that just happened to be anchored in the bay. He and the Captain stopped by Awanui in their tender for a chat briefly, as they were preparing to leave for Malta.  It was great to see Devon looking so well, and loving his job – who wouldn’t ?!
Tumblr media
Bye Devon - love your yacht!
Tumblr media
John and Chris arriving back to the boat with the groceries.
Our next stop was Cephalonia, the largest island in the Ionian. It is also the island where Louis de Bernier’s novel ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ was set, an old favourite book of mine about the Italian occupation of the island in the Second World War.  Pity the Hollywood film was such a disappointment, but the book is an absolute must read.
Tumblr media
Heading in to Fiskardho.
Arriving at the north-eastern tip of the island we pulled into the picture-postcard enclosed harbour of Fiskardho. It is one of the few places on the island to have survived the massive earthquake of 1953 (when over 90% of the buildings on the island were destroyed), so the town around the port has retained its Italianate architecture.
Captain Kosta backed us in to a great anchorage to the side of the township, where the rocky coast curved around to an old lighthouse on the point.  We sat in pristine water, and at our stern was a path that lead along the waterfront straight into town.  It meant we could swim off the boat and come and go as we pleased, which suited everyone perfectly.
Tumblr media
Chris securing a stern line to the trees.
Tumblr media
Yay - swimming off the back of the boat - heaven!
After a cooling dip when we arrived, we walked in to check out the town.  The beautiful 19th century houses are plastered in soft pastel shades with their wrought iron balconies bursting with bougainvillea. The tavernas and shops, with their awnings and umbrellas lining the dockside – all made for a very picturesque scene.  We were really taken with the place, and later that evening we went back in to have another wander around before dinner.
Tumblr media
Me and my girl - heading into Fiskardho.
Tumblr media
Had to include this one -  the gals in white.
We ended up staying here another day and night, as the generator was being fixed, and it was a perfect anchorage.  We went for a long walk in the morning past the ruins of an ancient Norman church on the northern side of the bay.  Just on from here are several beautiful little holiday rentals right on the waters edge, which I thought could one day be of interest.  Later we paddled over to them for a view from the sea. A very lovely spot.
Tumblr media
The lemon coloured boutique hotel in the middle was my pick.
Tumblr media
We couldn’t believe the colour of these bouganvilia
Tumblr media
Great selfie of us all -  back in town for the evening.
The Boat Broker, Nikos, who sold us Awanui, holidays in Fiskardho, so we made contact with him and met up later for a drink in town.  He and his wife Irene insisted that we come for breakfast the next morning to see their little house up on the hillside amongst the trees.
Nikos picked us up the next morning and we drove around a couple of bays and then up into the hills behind the town – looking down through the Cyprus trees and olives to the sea below.  It was a delightful morning, as we were proudly shown around their charming home, that was once his mothers’.
Tumblr media
The entrance to Nikos and Irene’s house - through the courtyard.
He and Irene had lovingly restored the house and spend all their summers here. We were even shown how the stone terrace acts as a water catchment area, as well as the roof, with huge concrete holding tanks under the terrace. Water on the island being extremely precious, it was a source of pride and esteem to have a lot of water storage capacity.
That afternoon we left Fiskardho and headed south down the eastern side of Cephalonia where the hills are covered with Cypress and Pines right down to the rocky shoreline.  The water in the many bays along this coast is deep and gin clear, and we ended up spendng the day in the bay of Ag Sofia, before heading into the port of Eufimia for the night.
Tumblr media
Rebecca trying out the new face mask - they are amazing!
We pulled in to the dock at Eufimia about 5 pm, as the heat was reaching its crescendo, and noticed the bar opposite had an inviting sign announcing happy hour cocktails – great idea!
Tumblr media
The town of Eufimia.
What followed was an hour sitting under the shade of an umbrella, sipping mojitos and being totally entertained by the drama unfolding in front of us, where many boats were coming in to tie up just as a stiff sea breeze blew in.  One in particular was an older Frenchman who was totally out of control.  He must have tried a dozen times to drop his forward anchor and back his launch in to the dock at great speed.  He seemed unable to steer his vessel, swerving one way and then, over compensating, and swerving the other. Careering into boats either side, causing a flurry of activity aboard as Boaties rushed to fend off, while yelling their advice. His forward anchor never held, so up it would come before starting again.  In the end the Port Police arrived and insisted that he abort his efforts, then directed him to an entirely different part of the port usually reserved for the fishing boats, and an easier approach. We raised a toast to Captain Kostas who is an expert in docking, and takes all that stress away from us.
One of the other memorable moments in Eufimia, was later that night after our meal as we walked back to the boat we joined a small crowd and watched a very talented young tight-rope-walker/come juggler, who was accompanied by a 5 piece band. So Eufimia will be remembered mainly for the entertainment it provided.
Tumblr media
Walking up above the town in the heat at 8 am.
After a good walk in the morning, we were off again across to the southern end of Ithaca, which sits snuggly along the eastern side of Cephalonia.  We tucked ourselves into the sheltered little bay of Plakis, that we later re-named “Goat Bay’.  There were so many goats wandering around the hillside and lying in the shade of small caves and under ledges along the shore, later coming down in the cool of the evening to lick the salt from the rocks.
Tumblr media
“Goat Bay”
It was a magical, secluded little bay that we thought we all had to ourselves until a huge Gullet muscled its way in front to us!  We were both there for the night.  This was one of the few nights that we free anchored, and cooked up a delicious dinner on board. Divine.
Tumblr media
All the girls on the bow in “Goat Bay”
Tumblr media
Just hanging around - chilling.
Tumblr media
...And trying to do yoga on the paddle boards.
After a very pleasant lazy day in Goat Bay we motored off and headed down to the southern end of Cephalonia.  It was a Saturday and the girls had a flight from Argostoli the next day, and Mark and Vanessa were arriving later that night, so we had to make our way around the Southern end of the island and back up to the Port and into the main town of Argostoli, which is close to the airport.
We broke the trip by staying a night in the ferry harbour of Poros on the way.  Not much to say about Poros.  Except that we were happy to head off early in the morning to find a good swimming spot.  We spent our last day with the girls anchored off the white cliffs at Pelagos in turquoise water under a burning blue sky.
Tumblr media
Making a rather big splash!
Tumblr media
The last day with Bex on board - Its been so much FUN.
Argostoli is the capital and principal harbour of the island, and was totally flattened in the 1953 earthquake.  So the present city was rebuilt after this event.  We berthed at the cruise ship pier as it is close to the town, and the smaller marina is pretty grim.  So it was from here that the taxi arrived to take our girls away to the airport and on to their next fabulous adventure.  They were heading back to the Cyclades to stay on Kea, before heading down to Mykonos where they all had far too much fun!
Tumblr media
Waving them off from Argostoli - to the aiport - and on to Kea.
We waved them off, cleaned up the boat a bit, then went into the bustling town to buy provisions and check out the shops. It was later this same night that we welcomed the exhausted Mark and Vanessa aboard after their long journey from NZ, and then on to the Northern end of Cephalonia.
 To be continued………
