A Heart Like Yours by Yessica
Fic can be read HERE.
Fake Dating, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Friends to Lovers, Romantic Comedy, Light Angst, Family Drama. Completed. Rated: T. Word Count: 47524
Pairings: Reigen Arataka/Serizawa Katsuya
Trigger Warnings: Family Issues, Implied Homophobia
“[The invite inside was completely inconspicuous, almost bland. A cream-colored piece of paper with black lettering in a fancy font and little frills in the margins, as if it was an afterthought to this whole affair. The date of the event was printed largely at the top and somebody - most likely his mother - had used a red pen to underline it as well as the text at the bottom.
Reigen Arataka and guest, it said.
Clearly, they had intended for him to bring somebody with him to this affair. And there was only one person he could possibly ask.]
-----
When it comes to getting his parents off his back in regards to having a girlfriend, Reigen employs the oldest trick in the book. Meanwhile, Serizawa just wonders when his life turned into a romcom.”

If Olaf is 'in any case' 'removed', why is he the first guardian the Baudelaires have? (NCT)
As ever, Mr Poe's idiotic refrains are a source of great intellectual stimulation for theorists like myself, @snicketstrange and @snicketsleuth.
In TBB, Poe remarks that Olaf is a cousin of the Baudelaires, but
'in any case, he's removed.'
If he's removed, why is he the first person to fulfil the role of guardian figure to the Baudelaires?
Well, this question is answered quite explicitly in the Netflix series, with Lemony giving viewers a flashback (and his definition of it)!
Olaf does his improv thing, making up Yessica Haircut right there on the spot, and granting himself access to Poe's office...
...but Poe has a choice. He can choose to ignore this idiot, who just waltzes in with no paperwork or permission, or he can choose to listen to him, and more importantly/dangerously, trust him with regards to:
The reliability of Haircut's 'friend' Olaf
Haircut's definition of 'closest living relative'
Unfortunately for the Baudelaires, Poe chooses the latter and this, ultimately, is the stimulant/catalyst for the entire plot of 'A Series of Unfortunate Events' to occur.
This could also explain the Baudelaires' stay with the Poes - in order for Poe to finalise the paperwork, as recommended by Haircut, for Olaf to become their guardian.
If he DIDN'T do ANY of this:
The Baudelaires end up at Monty's house. Straight away. NO questions asked.
By the time Olaf sets up a plan to infiltrate, Monty and the children (and Gustav, who would still be alive) would be in Peru.

I have been rewatching ASOUE Netflix and re-appreciating how it's a wonderful, lovingly-crafted, heartfelt rendition of its source material. With every new half-baked adaptated remade reimagined reboot that gets spat into the media cycle, I really want to believe ASOUE was something special. it was so clever and funny and never felt childish or dismissive.
I know there are people out there who didn't enjoy it (though god forbid that I actually read as far as their reasonings why.. I immediately scrolled away whenever I saw such a disagreeable take) but I hope those people can at least admit it the same earnest spirit as the source material.
not to say I don't have my gripes with the Netflix series, love it dearly but of course there's things I would change, but as a whole it is so solid, so entertaining, exceptionally faithful to the books and darkly comedic without being overwhelmingly depressing.
We really had it so good. If you haven't watched since its initial release, I definitely recommend revisiting.

The Young Writers Initiative: Finding Your Writing Community
Tumblr media
The Young Writers Initiative, a.k.a. TYWI, is a non-profit (founded by former NaNoWriMo intern Riya!) that provides resources for high school and college-aged writers through both their website and their on-the-ground chapters program. Today, some of the TYWI members share a little about how their programs help foster creative community:
Writing can often seem like an activity that involves sitting in your room alone, frantically typing on your computer. And yes, sometimes it is, but writing is a passion shared by millions of people around the globe. That means wherever you may be, you can find a community of writers to support you and your journey. This can include a few friends in your locality, an online server of people brought together by a love for writing, or anything in between. Being an active member of such a community means having people to keep you accountable, to bounce ideas off, and to empathize with your struggles as a writer.
Bounded by community, The Young Writers Initiative (TYWI) is dedicated to offering writing resources to help young writers develop their craft. From pre-reading and editing to mentorship opportunities with established authors, TYWI offers a multitude of free services. Volunteering at TYWI is also a great way to get more involved with the writing community! Additionally, TYWI’s Chapters Program helps students start creative writing clubs, forming tight-knit communities of young writers in their localities.
Running a TYWI Chapter at Hollins University
By Sophia Kunkel
It has been an honor to watch as the development of the first university chapter of TYWI unfolded on the Hollins campus. This opportunity to grow our branch has strengthened my leadership skills and helped me connect with other writers. The very act of writing is solitary, and it is amazing that The Young Writers Initiative brings together so many people all over the world, challenging the notion that we have to pursue our creative dreams on our own.
After the founding of Hollins’ chapter, I discovered that the encouragement of a solid and reliable community is essential, regardless of majors, genres, or writing experience. We might do most of our work in our dorm rooms and the library, hunched over our laptops with headphones and sitting in quiet focus, but there is certainly so much benefit from getting together with like-minded, driven peers. Additionally, our virtual discussions with several authors—Cassie Gustafson and Kris Spisak—provided much welcomed insight and wisdom into the world of writing, editing, and publishing. The idea of networking and creating relationships between successful writers and aspiring writers continues to impact our club members as we seek to learn from our panelists and speakers.
Running a TYWI Chapter at Wenatchee High School
By Miranda Nayak
I drafted my first novel during the pandemic, spending my free time inside of a story. As months passed, writing’s role in my life evolved. While I had once perceived it as a trusted friend, writing began to feel more like the ghost of a companion—present but not tangible enough to hold on to. I was suddenly desperate for a connection to a writing community.
It was only through discovering The Young Writers Initiative's Summer Write-a-Thon that I realized how many other people my age were passionate about creative writing. While isolated in my home, I felt more connected to others than I had since beginning my writing journey.
The most gratifying part of starting a TYWI chapter has been feeling those connections within my high school. Spending an entire lunch period discussing craft, completing writing sprints, or talking about writing struggles together has shown me that writing does not have to be a lonely hobby. The members of my chapter inspire and motivate me to keep writing; they are invaluable partners. I can already see the beginnings of creative innovation and collaboration that will blossom in tandem with the meaningful connections that our TYWI chapter fosters.
All in all, building a writing community makes the craft even more enjoyable than it already is. If you are interested in starting a TYWI chapter at your school or library, we encourage you to apply at tywi.org/chapters.

I love when animals are adapted to survive in stupid ways. Like mola mola which have managed to not go extinct simply by virtue of being too fuckhuge to even bother trying to take down
dont forget the fact that they lay literally millions of eggs per clutch to the point that it would be almost statistically impossible to NOT have a few survive to adulthood
i think my favorite example of this phenomenon of Stupid But Works is the porcupine. like what if you wanted to kill me but i taped knives to 90% of my body. or that tree whose fruit fucking explodes like a frag grenade
worst one is by far the stonefish. the sheer amount of seemingly intentional dickery this fish gives off. imagine choosing to be invisible so that nobody can see you but then whenever someone accidentally bumps into you (because you chose to be invisible) you stab them 57 times and also force feed them lethal amounts of arsenic. also i’m pretty sure they don’t even use the venom for hunting or fighting its ONLY use is killing people who accidentally step on them. sea landmines
