Where are my toxic lesbians? (And the wholesome gays?)

About two years ago in my German blog back then I wrote a blog about the lack of good gay representation. Because at that time we had quite a few shows with female queer relationships between main characters - the same was not true for male queer relationships. Don't get me wrong, there was some, but not much. Not compared to the sapphic ships.

Now it is two years later and I am happy to report, that things have changed. We got a lot more shows that have gay and bisexual men. Also just other media with queer men. Yay.

But also, I am noticing another pattern. The queer men we get are allowed to be complex and also a bit toxic. Meanwhile a lot of the lesbian stuff we have is - or at least ends up - very saccarine.

Now, before anyone goes "well, actually" on me: Yes, there are exceptions to this rule. I mean, Killing Eve was a show that ended up with... complex sapphic stuff. And sure, Catradora ended on a very saccarine note, but it was rather toxic on the way there. And yes, while of course it is complicated, too, Ed/Stede in OFMD are all in all a very sweet relationship. But yeah, exceptions do not change the rule.

I very much love all the complicated gay stuff we got this year (and the end of last year). With Interview with the Vampire, then Mizrak and Olrox, and finally now Captain Laserhawk. Oh, and I am tempted to count Astarion into this, because he definitely even without counting in his "playersexual" behavior, he is a queer man. And he is most certainly not a good person.

But my thing really is, that I want a relationship like that with some sapphic characters. Which is something we really did not get much of so far.

I think the core of the problem is, too, that a lot of the lesbian relationships we got in recent times, were in PG-rated shows, while basically most of the gay stuff was in R-rated media. And to be frank with you, the only PG-rated gay relationship I can think of, is the stuff in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, but that relationship was very much on the sideline of the show. Like, even Our Flag Means Death, which is all in all very sweet, is still rated "Mature".

And I think in a way this kinda goes to the core of the problem: Society at large tends to think of sapphic relationships are more innocent, than it does of gay relationships. And lets be completely honest, a lot of this goes back to the idea that "lesbians do not have sex", because in so many minds sex can only happen when there is a dick involved.

As such, lesbian relationships are always seen as something theoretically more "suitable" for a kids show, than a gay relationship is. Which is probably the main reason, why there is barely any examples of queer male characters in PG-rated stuff.

Though, honestly. It does not explain why there is this chronic lack of toxic lesbians. Because even in the R-rated stuff with lesbians (CaitVi comes to mind), the sapphic relationships tend to be the softest part of the entire show.

Killing Eve (where the sapphic stuff happening had to be won against the network) is really the only example I can think of in recent times, that is anywhere on the same level like IWTV, Laserhawk or Mizrox. And I think it is a bloody shame.

Gimme some toxic lesbians with complicated relationships. But also, give me a show like The Owl House, that focuses has the same focus Lumity received on a sweet, saccarine gay relationship between boys. Please?

god damn how miserable and pathetic does your life have to be to spend time blogging about hating one of the few queer animated shows we're ever going to get, that didn't get cancelled? can you give one example of a queer animated show that meets your unobtainable standards? of all shows- why SPOP? It's not even particularly worse than other shows, animated or not, queer or not...

I also haven’t seen Kipo in a while but I remember Scarlemagne having a better redemption arc too, yet this person in the reblogs is insisting otherwise. Catra never had to live with the consequences of her actions and she didn’t learn to be a better person so idk wtf this person is on about.

Agreed! Never watched Tangled the Series, and don't really intend to, but literally nearly any redemption arc would be better than Catra's

2. Exactly, I do not understand why everyone talks about Catra like her redemption was awesome, she did one good thing and said that she was so sowwy, she didn't have to face consequences, didn't have to deal with any of the war crimes she did, and nobody was aloud to be mad at her.

what are you counting as straightbait?

the definition of straightbait in this tournament is intentionally very loose, and the poll question is also vague on purpose (is it celebratory or derogatory? who knows). i've accepted submissions with more obvious examples of "straightbait", such as cases where m/f couples are teased but never get together or are revealed to be queer. however, i've also accepted couples where they have some kind of weird fucking thing going on that could be interpreted a number of ways but isn't straightforward canonical m/f romance, "buried straights" who die after romance is confirmed, and a number of other things. i go more into this tournament's definition of straightbait here and here.

why is this couple in the tournament if they get together canonically?

see above. in most cases where this question comes up, we're talking about buried straights. if the characters in question are queer, it is straightbait at least partially by virtue of those characters not being straight. and if neither of the above, the answer you are looking for will be in the propaganda.

you're free to argue about the validity of a straightbait in the tags, amongst yourselves, or in propaganda, but please don't come to me about whether a bait should or shouldn't be in the tournament. their inclusion on this blog + submitted propaganda speaks for itself

how were the matchups decided?

i sorted all my submissions into popularity tiers, then randomized matchups within each tier, so characters were matched up with others with equal or similar popularity to the best of my ability. tiers were based on how many submissions a pair received and how well they did in the singles tournament. there were five or six tiers in total, although it's been long enough since i made the bracket that i do not remember the exact number

what is the singles tournament?

the singles tournament was a preliminary tournament that i ran for every pairing or character that was only submitted once, hence "singles". i only automatically qualified straightbaits with more than one submission, so i did this to allow more submissions to enter the main tournament. also a chance to see your blorbo in a poll at least once, even if they didn't qualify

what should i do if you've gotten something wrong?

Okay, I saw someone say that Nimona, while being good representation, “didn’t take the big step forward in queer rep that everyone says it did”.

That is wrong. So wrong, my dude.

Yes, an explicit and open queer relationship in children’s cartoons is not new, per ce. Hell, just this year, two popular kids’ cartoons had the main character in an open, adorable, plot-based queer romance. But this is different for a few reasons.

Reason number one, it isn’t left in suspense. Yes, they had that split for three odd weeks, but they started the film as a couple. One of the very first scenes is them together as a couple, Ambrosius saying he loves Ballister, them holding hands, Ballister leaning on Ambrosius’ shoulder. Ambrosius says he loves Ballister three times during the film, and none of them are any more than halfway in. It’s very clear, from their very first interaction, that they are an established relationship, which isn’t something I’ve seen...at all in other animation.

Secondly, they are the plot. Ambrosius not believing Ballister, Ambrosius cutting off Ballister’s arm, Ballister trying to get the video to Ambrosius - this is what drives the plot. In any other children’s animation with queer relationships, the relationship is not the main focus. Even The Owl House, which is so amazing with its constant representation, would still make sense if Luz and Amity never happened. But Nimona’s plot wouldn’t make sense without Ballister and Ambrosius’ relationship. It, quite simply, can’t be erased. It could work as a friendship, yes, but that’s the point. They could have just been two close friends that fell on opposite sides of a fight, but they weren’t. They were two lovers that fell on opposite sides of a fight.

Thirdly, they aren’t sanitized for “family viewing”. An emerging trend in children’s animation is to only have mlm relationships as fathers to make them seem more “family friendly”. With the exception of Kipo, there really isn’t many tv shows or films that places light upon an mlm relationship. And if it does, it'll be a teen relationship because teenagers being queer tends to come across as less “dirty” and more “innocent”. But Goldenheart is none of these things. They are adults without the mollifying aspect of having a family. And on top of that, they fight. They wield swords and they get bloody and they shoot at things and get angry and yell. They aren’t “clean” and “innocent”.

As well as this, they are in a film. Films are far more accessible than tv shows. You have to watch twenty seven episodes before Lumity in toh is canon. Troy kisses Benson on the eleventh episode of Kipo. And there are two hundred and eighty three episodes of Adventure Time before Marceline and Bonnie kiss. But with a film, the queerness is much more forward - especially in Nimona, where it’s literally the second scene. Animated films hardly ever display queer relationships, but Nimona did.

Finally - they aren’t perfect. I don’t know about you, but three weeks of thinking your boyfriend/maybe ex is a murderer? Doesn’t sound like a healthy few weeks to me. I have only seen big relationship arguments portrayed in straight relationships in cartoons - think Star Vs The Forces Of Evil - whereas queer relationships either have the massive fight prior to being canonically gay - She Ra - or have conflict, not arguments, that are dealt with quickly - Dead End/The Owl House. But Goldenheart? Goldenheart suffers. Their relationship is pushed to such extreme boundaries as for them to be pretty much exes throughout most of the movie. And yet, they are clearly healthy, happy and very much in love at the end.

TL;DR - Nimona is amazing with the queer representation, and it is a milestone for LGBTQ+ cartoons. Not only is the relationship romantic for the entire movie, the plot is driven by Ambrosius and Ballister’s sort-of-break-up. In short, they are treated the same way straight people are. They have flaws, they have massive arguments, they have plot importance, they have backstory. They are in love. And that’s what matters more than anything else.

It may be controversial as I love both shows, and saying anything semi-negative about ATLA is tantamount to murder but...

I think Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts handled "ten year old finds a letter from their closest friend's dad and hides it, afraid of being left alone" better than Avatar did.

Wolf's reasoning makes more sense, she has a reason not to trust people. Aang had no reason to think they couldn't establish communication with Hadoka, or that they couldn't see him, even to drop Bato off, I know they were on a schedule but it wasn't that advanced, and Zuko's map of Aang's travels showed that Aang doesn't care about doubling back or getting distracted. Hell, the following episodes include going to a Fire Festival, and spending time hanging out at the Northern Air Temple. Were these somehow less distracting than Hadoka?

Wolf immediately apologizes and explains why. She's also the one who came clean with her guilt, of her own accord. Aang got found out and never told the truth or had a chance to communicate, and Katara was kind of an asshole too, digging through his stuff.

And Kipo immediately communicates that she was hurt but that she forgives Wolf and doesn't intend to leave Wolf. That her invitation to be a pack would last even when she had her dad.

Katara and Sokka kinda let Aang fester in his guilt and sadness.

Also Aang, unlike Wolf, didn't really have a reason to think his friends would abandon him. He felt left out but his friends and Bato were making every effort to include Aang in their culture and traditions. Aang felt left out on his own, and yes he was homesick, I acknowledge that, but the water tribe did nothing but accept and be kind to Aang.

Wolf had every reason to believe she would be abandoned. Her own family tried to kill her. Kipo up to that point does display some selfish and oblivious behaviors, including outright ignoring Wolf's warnings and going off alone while in the wolf observatory, while Wolf was dealing with her anxiety and trauma. (And why Wolf's reaction when Kipo came clean about lying also makes sense, when Wolf is hurt, she runs, and her friends know this about her and know they have to chase down Wolf to get her to talk about her feelings.)

Anyway I love both plotlines, don't get me wrong, preteens are impulsive and have fears.

I just prefer that Kipo and Wolf's friendship came first enough that hurt feelings wasn't enough to stop them from communicating in their own ways.

Cuphead is trying not to laugh, and Steven knows how bad it will be if Adam finds out what that shirt says, possibly thanks to Garnet's future vision.

also, I like idea of Knockout being Steven's Cybertronian Guardian and Knockout could of started out as Steven's Guardian when Steven was just a baby, and it being Rose who was the first out of the Crystal Gems and Other Humans besides Greg in Beach City that saw the good in Knockout, and Garnet was the second to see the good in him and Amethyst was the third but it took Pearl a lot longer to fully trust Knockout.

also Kipo in this, is a future version who still has part of her new hair style from the epilogue but this version of Kipo grew her hair longer and might be around her mid-20s and is married to a unknown spouse.

Sari in this drawing is 23 years old but close to becoming 24 years.

or she could already be 24 years old.

we should put a protective barrier around the Earth to stop the Negative and Toxic energy from the Toxic-Masculine energy through, and only allow the positive Masculine energy through.

it might be able to help both Omni-Mom and the Divine Feminine heal even more if all Earth Angels worked together to form a protective barrier so that the Feminine part of the Earth can heal properly...and the whole two certain Masculine sides crossing the line with their fight is not helping in the recovery process.

they don't need to be marrying too close to the tree...

the descendants of the early generations that were descended from Seth and Cain, would have to have different DNA from another Paternal and Maternal source and they would have to still marry into different bloodlines to different humans in order for the descendants of both Seth and Cain back then, were to marry each other...because it would mean they would be hardly be closely related so there will be no possible problems with the future offspring.

which I'm glad to be a "Purple Blood" rather than a "Blue Blood", yeah being a "Blue Blood" is like another word for Royalty but given that is true, but I'm glad that some of my Ancestors are both Royal and Non-Royals, and I don't want to be called a blue blood, but instead a purple blood. :)

also even if ya can look to the situation with Cain and who his bio-dad is, either it be Samael or Lucifer, and it being like the same situation in a Hazbin Hotel AU's Fanon Timeline....with Adam being the Step-Dad of Cain...

it would still make for a good Jerry Springer comedy, but instead of Jerry, it's some guy named Perry who has to talk to both Eve and the possible fathers of Cain, and even have the Step-Dad Adam there as well...

I wouldn't be surprised if Adam and Eve from Hazbin Hotel are divorced, like for all we know, Eve could of left him like around early 202X.

Adam could act like it never happen and could be in denial that both of his two ex-wives Lilith and Eve left him...

which would serve that Peepaw Adam right, that's what you get for being a selfish, egoistical, toxic-masculine jerk.

I think it could be interesting if it turn out Cain and Charlie were half-siblings, which would mean that Lucifer from that series was with Eve first before he and Lilith fell in love...

like Eve and Lucifer had to have a mutual break-up, because they knew they couldn't truly be together because one of the reasons being Adam...and at some point Lucifer meets Lilith, falls in love again, but for all we know Lucifer could still have feelings for Eve as well.

and yeah, like the shirt that Adam is wearing points out...

Abel should not be around Fluffy-Babies, and if ever tried that "offering" stuff with my first or second cats (my first cat is no longer with us and had passed away a few years ago, and I was lucky to get my second cat when they were still a little kitten.) I would go Feral Earth Angel on him.

and like I said before, if those at the vet did anything wrong with my second cat or like if they weren't taken there on time...

if I had the power to, I would start Omnigeddon...

like in theory it is like Armageddon but FAR and way worse...

lucky it might not be thing...but yeah the thoughts of wanting to start Omnigeddon did come to my mind if anything bad happen to my second cat when they had to go to the vet and they had to have surgery.

also there could be better ways to spiritually offer food even if it is meat to like both the Heavenly-Father & Earthly-Mother...

like having to cook it, and serve it with fruits and vegetables and eating it with friends and family...

and also spiritually sharing it with both the Heavenly-Father and Earthly-Mother...

and yeah, I'm still going to view both Abel and Cain being in the wrong, but Cain only got far worse because of bad parenting and his depression getting far worse and reaching a very dangerous breaking point...

and if anyone needs to be redeem at Charlie's Hotel, it's both Cain and Abel.

oh, and yes Steven is holding a cellphone to talk to Knockout and one could view that Steven is whispering so Adam doesn't hear him.

anyway hope some like this Crossover Fanart.

and once again, when it comes to giving Ficto-Peepaw Adam that shirt, I still regret nothing. XD
