The yellow-eyed penguin is the largest penguin living in New Zealand. Their population took a huge hit due to a bacterial outbreak, and they continue to be threatened by habitat degradation and invasive predators.

If you were curious about the penguin in my last post... Fisk is a yellow-eyed penguin with a yellow-fin tuna tail. It's my newest fursona. It's kind of cranky, but talented nonetheless.

Round 1 Match 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rockhopper penguin gets its name from- you guessed it- hopping on rocks. Rockhopper penguins can jump up to six feet in a single hop. The number of Rockhopper species is debated. Some see Southern, Northern, and Eastern Rockhoppers as all different species, while some see the Eastern as a subspecies of the Southern. Still others see them all as one species. Southern Rockhoppers live at the Southern tip of South America, while the Eastern and Northern live on various islands between Antarctica and Australia or Africa. Rockhoppers stand at a height of 19-22 inches (48-55 cm).
The Yellow-Eyed penguin is the rarest penguin species. They are classified as Endangered. They live in the New Zealand region, often in forests. Yellow-Eyed penguins are one of the few penguin species that don't live in colonies. They are 24-29 inches (60-75cm) tall. Yellow-Eyed penguins are identifiable by their yellow eyes and head.
