Ye Baiyi stared at him, at the face he knew better than his own. At the smile that never failed to make his heart race, at the eyes that held more stars than the night sky. He could feel his lips tremble and his nose start to run. His throat was tight and his voice was raw, and he wiped his sleeve over his damp cheeks and said, "Changqing."

"I'm here," answered Rong Changqing, just as he'd promised.

"Ch-Changqing," Ye Baiyi said again, hating the wavering of his voice, the wobbling of his jaw, the shaking of his entire body--but unable to make it stop, unable to help himself.

"I'm here," said Rong Changqing, arms coming up to embrace Ye Baiyi very carefully. The touch was so welcome, it was almost painful--it felt so good to be held that it almost hurt, and Ye Baiyi could not stifle the sob that came from the depths of his heart.

"Changqing-ah," he wailed, only this time it was muffled by Rong Changqing's robes, and so no one else but the pair of them could hear the broken sound, or Rong Changqing's soothing murmurs of, "I'm here, Yiyi. I'm here."

one of my favorite scenes in all of word of honor is episode 14 at exactly the 2min mark where ye baiyi shows up and is like "you're my idiot students idiot stupid idiocity is generational anyway strip my Immortal Daddy sense tells me you ill as fuck" and zhou zishu is like "you want me to STRIP in the middle of the HOTEL LOBBY???" and YBY is like, "god millennials these days" and then they fight and YBY rips a piece of ZZS's undershirt off and the camera pans to it gently fluttering in the wind like it's the last love letter of a jane austen char got from their beloved with news they died in the war as they gaze over the cliffside over the stormy ocean and then BAM Wen KeXing shows up like a jerry springer guest from the side door and is like "UNHAND MY BELOVED THE REASON MY HEART BEATS EACH MORNING WHEN THE SUN RISES" and catches ZZS by his tiny waist to dramatic spin for extra fruit flavor and YBY is like "who the fuck invited this twink?" and then they fight and it explodes a river and shit and ZZS is like "omg you're gonna wake up the whole neighborhood!!" and YBY is like "I'm literally to Daddy to be dealing with this shit just strip so I can diagnose your martial arts cancer" and WKX is like "MY BABY HAS CANCER???" and tries to strip ZZS himself and ZZS is like "what in the fucking 90s shojo manga by Yu Watase Fushigi Yugi shit is this we're in a CLAMP manga stop pulling at my clothes!!!!" and then just to be extra dramatic and Gay (tm) ZZS rips open his own shirt to reveal *gasp* three nipples nails of martial arts cancer and YBY is just like "damn bae you fucked" and WKX has a complete Gay Breakdown

More TYK design studies! Here, specifically, an evolution of Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing throughout their lives, to see what stages they got through to reach who they are during book canon.

I headcanon ZZS as this little smug genius and tried to keep this unimpressed, self-satisfied smirk throughout, with I hope a noticeable shift for the last two.

5 y.o., still living at the Zhou estate, with his family. He's a bit of a weak child (pulled from ZZS saying he didn't have nearly as good a constitution as ZCL does), but quite smart, already with a knack for spying on people.

10 y.o. has joined Siji manor, proud and smug and feeling superior for having been chosen by QHZ and being hella good at what he does.

15 y.o. is now freshly appointed sect leader, and I think it's going well enough, that he's quite feeling himself there.

20 y.o., has now been working for HLY for a bit more than a year, roughly.

25 y.o., right after the ending of Qi Ye, right after the war, right after he pretty much got his very personal bad ending. I feel like he's quite numb, can only survive through floating above everything and just focus on work and some distracting, meaningless things.

29 y.o., TYK canon after unmasking.

With WKX I wanted to represent, without being too on the nose, the progressive loss of humanity.

5 y.o., still living with his Jianghu heroes parents. Quite a happy and playful child, more interested in having fun than studying. Probably a natural at many things, however, such as learning his father's sword techniques (unlike the arts of healing lessons that he probably didn't pay much attention to)

10 y.o., has been in the valley for a few months already, surviving.

18 y.o., is a servant for whom is currently the Ghost Valley Master.

21 y.o., is now the GVM himself, has successfully lead a coup against his own master and then won what was basically a battle royale for the throne.

26 y.o., is now a seasoned GVM, has been in this position for much longer than average, is working on his plan.

30 y.o., TYK canon.

For reasons, it's quite important to me to have this overview and to consider in detail each of their progression since I think it participates heavily into how I understand them as people. The followings were already posted in my previous post with all the design, but since it's thematically coherent I will add the families and some details about them:

The Wen family, especially the parents, were Jianghu heroes in the best wuxia tradition. Wen Ruyu had to look a like Wen Kexing, and Gu Miaomiao be this pure, strong, energetic heroïne. As mentioned above, I like child WKX to be a very fun and energetic child himself-- he likes the colours his mother wears, likes to run around and look at beautiful things. I found that the two buns were a cute addition to his design. He's about 3 y.o. on this illustration. The Zhou family is meant to look plain and normal, as ZZS himself-- little parenthesis: although I do like to draw ZZS as handsome, I think he isn't much more than that; I think that it's fine to consider that he looks rather plain, especially next to people like WKX or, obviously, JBY or YBY. Since ZZS seems to have a fascination with heroes in the book, I like to imagine that he was naturally the least heroic of the brotherhood; both his brother and sister being a better match than himself (although ultimately they are all fairly normal people). I liked to have his mom be the originator of his height (I think he should totally be the tallest of the brotherhood, btw).

Who let you listen to him? Stupid kid. WOH, episode 17, part 2. ZCL continues to exercise despite being tired. WKX says that seeing how ZZS treats ZCL, he understands how gentle the WKX champion was with him. YBY asks WKX who his master was. WKX says his father. YBY laughs saying how can a father train his son and adds that's why WKX's skills are so poor. YBY adds that students should be taught the way ZZS does. WKX asks what master YBY studied under. The question surprises the Immortal, who replies that WKX is not only bad at martial arts, but also at drinking. Both men start drinking. ZCL continues training. ZZS briefly instructs ZCL on what to do to improve his exercise technique, telling him about life energy. WKX interrupts and explains that it is better to waste life energy than to accumulate it and explains how to do this. ZCL decides to try and starts practicing according to WKX's instructions, which ZZS does not like. He asks why he is listening to WKX and gives him further instructions. ZCL starts practicing according to the instructions. WKX gives ZCL another piece of advice again. The boy becomes increasingly confused and exhausted, but continues to exercise. At some point, fatigue sets in. ZZS and WKX, seeing this, grab the boy, protecting him from falling. ZZS tells WKX to leave the boy and pushes him to the ground. WKX kneels next to the boy and gives him his energy. YBY congratulates ZZS and WKX for almost torturing the boy to death. He asks if they are happy with themselves. ZZS firmly replies that the boy is fine. WKX is surprised that the boy's meridians are wider than other people's. He wonders if the boy has any special talent. ZZS replies that he noticed it a long time ago. He adds that the boy's meridians are straight and smooth and take a long time to be filled with energy. He explains that his skills haven't improved not because he hasn't tried, but because it takes more time. YBY comments on this in his mischievous way, saying that there is a boy who has a dull mind but strong bones. WKX decides to respond to the malicious taunt by saying that ZCL has already chosen a champion. YBY replies that he has seen greater talents. He asks WKX if she drinks with him. WKX confirms he drinks. And ZZS helps ZCL get up. Walking up to the table, WKX says that he will drink so much with YBY that the Immortal will call him father. ZZS asks ZCL if everything is OK. ZZS simply tells him to exercise for an hour. ZCL is surprised but doesn't say anything. YBY says the boy will be fine. WKX tells YBY to drink. The second part of the scene continues to show us that no grown man has an ounce of mercy for ZCL. WKX decides to use ZCL's training to annoy ZZS. ZZS is irritated by WKX's behavior. He does not want a stranger to give his student advice, even if it would be useful. WKX seems to like to tease ZZS. This is his way for ZZS to respond to his interests. ZZH nicely showed the character of ZZS, who on the one hand is a cold and ruthless master, but on the other hand is able to get rid of some layers of empathy. GJ as WKX showed that this joyful and full of life man can also take care of a boy.
