How To Tame A Sorcerer (64)
Series Master list
Tumblr media
"Bout time you woke up."
Kagome groans as her sight returns. Her hands go to her stomach. No cramping. She is not in pain. That's a plus. But something happened. How long has she been out? Feels like hours. InuYasha brushes her hands away and leans forward. He presses his ear to her stomach.
"All good. They're good." He leans back and gives her a wobbly grin.
"Thank Kami." She lets out a breath and then freezes. They? "You mean they as in..."
InuYasha squints. His golden eyes are really pretty in the moonlight. Slightly warmer than Sesshomaru's eyes. Wait... moonlight? It was definitely daytime when they went out to the cafe.
"They as in they. Did ya not know you were having twins?"
"Fuck no. Are you sure your hearing isn't damaged?"
InuYasha presses his ear back to her stomach and frowns. "Huh. That's creepy." He pulls back and sits on the bed. Kagome blinks. Wait. When did they get back to the house? They were out and then... her head throbs as she tries to recall what happened. There was an explosion or something.
"I thought we were out at the cafe."
"Yeah, we were. But there was a problem." InuYasha presses his lips together. His claws dig into his palms. "What matters is that you are safe, and they are safe." His ears twitch and swerve towards the door.
Why isn't he telling her what that problem was?
Kagome shakes her head. "There was only one baby on the ultrasound. And what do you mean there was a problem?" She leans her head against the headboard. While she might not be in pain, her body feels so damn heavy, like she has a 100-pound weight on her chest. "And what about Satoru? What was that phone call?" Her chest burns. Satoru better be okay. Why isn't he home yet if it's dark out?
Satoru will not be happy to see InuYasha in their bedroom. She needs to get to the bottom of what is going on like now.
"Listen. The thing is. Well..." he trails off and looks at the door. A moment later, Sesshomaru walks in. There is no expression on the demon lord's face. For once, Kagome wishes there was something there for her to go off on. It is a little weird to see Sesshomaru dressed in his old attire.
"Where is my husband?" She demands. InuYasha flinches, but she ignores him and focuses on Sesshomaru. No one is giving her the answers she wants to hear. Someone needs to start talking or so help her.
"He's not your husband," InuYasha grumbles under his breath.
"Sealed," Sesshomaru answers.
Kagome's breath catches. Her hands shake. What does he mean sealed? That cannot be right. Satoru is untouchable. The strongest. His strength is absolute. They have to be fucking with her. But Sesshomaru does not joke, and he wouldn't try to play some trick on her. No, Sesshomaru is above that.
Which means Satoru is not coming home.
Her chest rises rapidly. Her breaths come out in spurts. The room is spinning.
"Calm down," Sesshomaru commands. "He is sealed. Not dead." His words snap her out of her spiral.
"How did that even happen?" Kagome focuses on slowing her breathing. She is no help to anyone if she passes out again. Breathe in and out. Over and over.
"By the time I arrived, he was already sealed. Him and Shippo split up to tackle the curses and demons running havoc in the city. I don't know all the details, but this was not a surprise attack. It was planned. I suspect it was all to seal your mate." Sesshomaru stands there reciting the words as if he has practiced what to say to her. His aura takes up the entire bedroom. Unshakable.
"Which means," InuYasha interjects, "we need to move you to higher ground. It's a shit show out there. Everyone knows about curses now." He turns to address Sesshomaru. "What about us?"
"Lumped in with the curses and sorcerers. As far as the rest of the world knows, demons are not a thing. Even if we were discovered, the humans have no way of determining who is a demon or not. It would end up being a witch hunt that would lead nowhere."
"Good. One last thing to worry about." InuYasha scratches at his nose.
The conversation flows back and forth, but Kagome can't find it in her to be relieved that demons weren't found out. How can she? Satoru is somewhere far away from her. This is different from when he left overseas for work. She could call him anytime and he would answer. Now, she has no idea where he is. How he is doing. Or who has him.
The Shikon pulses. A wave of soft power washes over her. Sesshomaru and InuYasha must feel it too, because the conversation comes to a halt. The accusation hangs in the air. Not that she can find it in her to care too much what either of them is thinking right now. Her world is crashing down around her. Her husband - her mate - is out there somewhere and she does not know where to look for him.
"Is it reacting to your emotions?" Sesshomaru stands over the bed. His golden eyes are cool, assessing, but not in a way that makes her feel uncomfortable.
She gives a jerky nod. "Mainly when I think about Satoru. Yeah." The Shikon pulses again. Her emotions stabilize for now. The warmth feels like someone is giving her a hug.
"Hn. This could be a problem."
"Why? Because she can't keep her emotions in check?"
"No, idiot. Because the jewel has some attachment to her mate."
InuYasha scoffs. "So?"
"The jewel that only has its own well-being in mind is attached to the six-eyes. You don't find a problem with that?" Sesshomaru deadpans.
"No. It's not like the Jewel is tainted." InuYasha cuts his eyes towards her. "It merged with you, right? No one can cut it out again?"
"We're merged. There's no separating us." Kagome looks out towards the window. Her eyes focus on the nightstand.
The card! How could she forget about the card? There was no date or time written on the back. It must have been Geto that planned this. Why else would he tell her to show up alone?
"Where are the kids?" She moves the covers away and stands. InuYasha makes a noise of protest, but doesn't stop her.
"Healing. They are stationed in the guest rooms."
"I don't have guest rooms." There is one room for the kiddos to stay in, but Sesshomaru said guest rooms, not guest room, so they can't be in the house.
"I do." Sesshomaru cuts his eyes at InuYasha. "Why didn't you bring take her to safety?"
"Don't shift the blame to me," InuYasha complains.
Kagome tunes them out. One thing is for certain, she cannot go to Sesshomaru's place. She needs to convince them to let her stay here in the house. At least that way she'll have a shot at sneaking out. No, Sesshomaru's estate is far too secluded. Not to mention, you need the ability to freaking fly to get to and from it.
And she doubts InuYasha will let her use whatever transportation he has to go back and forth.
"I'm staying here in my home. I'm not running away."
"Eh, that's not happening. Ya think that bast—human of yours would want you staying in harm's way?"
"Satoru would want me out looking for him."
"Kagome." InuYasha sighs. "I don't even know the guy, but I can guarantee that is the last thing he would want you to do. "
"I'm not leaving."
"You are."
"I am–"
"Enough. Both of you." Sesshomaru glares at them. "Kagome, you do not know the chaos outside. Your mate would want you and the young safe. We will get him unsealed from whatever box he is in, but we cannot do that if we are worried about you taking matters into your own hands."
Kagome shifts her head away.
"However, so long as Sukuna's vessel is alive, it would be best to keep the two separated."
Kagome's brows furrow. "Did something happen to Yuji?"
"He lost control of Sukuna. The damage toil is great. Shibuya is a wasteland. Festering with negative energy. The curses born from the day alone will be numerous. At any rate, you are not to be near him. If he can lose control once, he can lose control again."
"But everyone is okay?"
"Your son is fine. He, too, should stay away from Sukuna's vessel, but he won't listen to reason. The girl is fine. There will be scars on her face, but nothing she cannot move past. I know not of the others. There were casualties, but..." Sesshomaru trails off. "If there are any others, then Shippo would have taken them to the estate."
Of course, Sesshomaru only knows about Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara since they visit so much.
"They are too young to have to deal with this." Her hand hovers over the doorknob. She wants to run, but to where?
"This is what sorcerers do," InuYasha speaks up. "Your brats will do the same, especially since one of them will be considered the heir to the Gojo clan. Heard the clan was wiped out and all. Not looking too good with Gojo being gone."
Kagome turns. "I'm not having twins." She ignores the comment about the clan being wiped out. If only she had not slapped Satoru's uncle, then maybe the clan wouldn't have fallen prey to Naraku's schemes.
"Twins?" Sesshomaru questions.
"I'm tellin ya, she's having twins. It's just one of them is being creepy."
Sesshomaru walks over to her and sinks down to his knees. Kagome's eyes widen. Uncomfortable does not even begin to explain how she is feeling. He presses his ear to her stomach like InuYasha did earlier and frowns.
"Say something."
"One heartbeat remains constant. The other one comes and goes. As if it is masking its presence." Sesshomaru stands, his eyes are cool.
Assessing.
She hates it.
"I'm not having twins," she says, more to convince herself. This is not the kind of information she wants to receive right now, so she shoves it away. What matters is finding Satoru.
"I'm not sure what you are having," Sesshomaru says gently, "but we will worry about it when the time comes."
"So, you agree it's creepy," InuYasha intones.
"It's cause for concern with the Shikon reacting so strongly in regards to her mate."
Kagome sucks in a breath and walks out of the room. She cannot stay in there a moment longer. Not with them talking over her as if she is not there. She needs a plan. Someone to distract one of them while she sneaks out. Kagome stuffs her hands in her pockets. Her hand hits the medallion.
How could she forget about that? She tightens her fingers around it and lets out a breath. Yakeru will help her. Even if she gets strong-armed into moving into Sesshomaru's estate, at least Yakeru will help her out.
Shippo might. But Shippo is a wild card, he might not.
She plops down on the couch and turns on the tv to the news. InuYasha and Sesshomaru are still holding out information, and she needs to know what she is dealing with before she moves. In her gut, she knows Geto has something to do with Satoru being gone. She'll start there at the shrine. Geto gave her that card for a reason.
The reporter cuts into her musings. In a loud and clear voice, the reporter declares, "Chaos today in Shibuya. Are curses a figment of our imagination? Or are they real? Stay tuned for more information as we take a deep dive into the number of casualties, damages, and why you should fear the things that go bump in the night."
"Guess you have to come to the estate after all," Sesshomaru says, reaching for the remote. He turns the television off. "Do you understand now? It is far too dangerous for you to stay here. More people are aware of curses now, which will only lead to more of them popping up. Not to mention, you are a wanted woman for now."
"Why am I wanted?" And since when is Jujutsu society common knowledge? Oh... right, because of what happened today. Still, why the hell is she wanted?
"Anyone who tries to free Satoru will be hunted down as well. They are blaming him for today's incident." Sesshomaru gestures to her stomach. "It's not out yet, but it is only a matter of time before others take notice of your growing womb. Some may seek to eliminate you because you carry the Gojo line, or..."
"Or they may want to keep me locked away and try to harness my kid's powers for themselves," she says, shoulders slumping. It's the same thing Yumi, Yakeru's sister, tried to pull. "Do I have a choice in this?"
"No." Sesshomaru holds out his hand. "Your mate is not here to make the call and as alpha of the pack, this Sesshomaru will ensure that everyone is protected. I know how you think. Whatever schemes you are plotting, throw them out of your mind now. We will get your mate back, but not at the expense of losing you."
Kagome grits her teeth as she takes Sesshomaru's hand. How can they expect her to just sit this out? "I won't do anything rash," she acquiesces. Sludge coats her tongue. Her throat is tight. Breathe in and out.
Like hell, she will just sit this one out and wait for them to take their time in saving Satoru. The Shikon pulses again. The feeling of someone hugging her returns. Right, she's not alone in this. The Shikon wants Satoru back as much as she does. Sesshomaru narrows his eyes at her, but she shrugs it off. "Just thinking about Satoru."
Sesshomaru nods.
Yeah... just thinking about rescuing him herself.

The argument against relationships like sessrin being portrayed positively as a version of romantic escapism for young girls.
(AKA I’m back on my shit again with my long, big-worded essays under the cut.)
As much as I laugh along with the people who drag Yashahime as Sunrise’s lolicon fanfiction I know at the end of the day that sessrin was not featured in HNY as a fantasy romance for creepy older guys who are into little girls. It was made canon specifically FOR the target demographic of the show: young girls.
I can go onto Twitter right now and (had I not already blocked all of the sessrin squad over there) easily find at least 10 tweets in no time that mention either: “Immortal being falling in love with teenager is a common YA romance trope”, “Sesshomaru was my crush as a little kid, so of course I wanted him to fall in love with Rin because I identified with her”, or “Haven’t ya’ll ever read Twilight?” or any variation thereof. And yes they are right in one sense, but totally wrong in another.
At the end of the day who am I to begrudge YA Supernatural Romance readers of their favorite “16-year-old girl meets immortal vampire and falls in love” trope?
But sessrin is NOT this trope! Many of us against it have often said how we would have had NO PROBLEM with sessrin if either Rin was older when Sesshomaru had met her, even if she was 15 like Kagome, and married and started having kids at 18+, -OR- if Sesshomaru had ACTUALLY left Rin in that village to be raised by humans, (you know never sending gifts, or stopping by to visit), and didn’t meet her again and start a romantic relationship until she was an adult woman (and no I don’t mean feudal era adult, gtfo you bunch of smelly, basement dwelling, armchair anime historian weebs!)
Essentially Sunrise tried to do this trope but failed miserably, just like they did in almost every other aspect of this sequel. They didn’t give us a shaky timeline that leaves Rin at 14-16 at the time of giving birth to the twins because they are a bunch of creeps who like little girls, they did it because they thought their 14-16 year old female audience would like it.
But where they fucked up was in reminding us that Sesshomaru had a very large impact on this little girl’s life at an even younger age. How they reminded us in the very first episode that Rin was a little girl who “adored” Sesshomaru (a little girl who was approximately 12 at that time). They imported a character directly from the original that even younger girls (who are DEFINITELY IN THE AUDIENCE, AND WHO THEY MAKE NO QUALMS MARKETING THIER SHOW AND MERCHANDICE TOWARDS) can identify with, and then gave her a romantic arch with an adult man.
So what’s the difference between Sesshomaru being romantically involved in a 12 y/o vs a 16 y/o? Well honestly I would hope that anyone with a brain wouldn’t need to ask this question, but for the sake of being clear, what the difference is between them from a piece of fiction to be consumed by a target audience of between 12 to 16 is the audience perception at these ages.
By implying that a romantic relationship could have started at any time with Rin between the ages of 12 to 14 Sunrise is telling a very impressionable age range that an older man showing interest in you is not only possible, but can be totally sweet and romantic. Simply put, 10-12 year old's are at a much more impressionable age then 16 year old's, and this kind of relationship dynamic is displayed very PERSONALLY, about a character who is THIER age!
At the end of the day, don’t come at me with all your little cherry-picked examples of this trope done a million other times that people haven’t had any problems with because THEY AREN’T THE SAME AS SESSRIN!
Media and tropes are not black and white. We can’t evenly divide every piece of media into neat little “right” and “wrong” categories. There are many pieces of media that show a relationship dynamic similar to sessrin that is portrayed negatively. There are pieces of media out there marketed for adults that show similar relationship dynamics as muddy, and “maybe it’s wrong, but maybe it’s right?” because as the intended audience are all adults the POINT of said media was to make you uncomfortable, or to inspire the adult audience to dissect the themes in deep discussion to find deeper meanings.
But at the end of the day there can be absolutely no question that Sunrise screwed the pooch with their trashpile of a sequel by trying to include a trope intended to be portrayed differently and botching it entirely. There is no lesson for little girls that attention from an adult man is dangerous. And this show is much too shallow to keep an adults attention to excuse the relationship as a theme for discussion amongst a mature audience.
tl;dr Sunrise’s writing is shit CASH ME OUTSIDE!

More Than
so i was listening to the song More Than My Hometown by Morgan Wallen which is now my new obsession and i shit you not, the ending to this little drab popped into my brain so fast i knew i had to write it down. thus, this angsty little blurb was born.
now as i was writing, i realized that it was giving off sooo many One Last Ride vibes, written by the ever so talented @lemonlushff, that i decided to tweak this so it could tuck somewhere into the story itself as a sort of unofficially official glimpse of their breakup. i’m happy to report that it has Lemon’s official seal of approval and she loved it!
so now i’m gonna share it with all you fine folks and i hope you enjoy it too! :) and since it is in the OLR universe, there will be angst hahahaa.
so this is for you Lemon, my sweet and sour friend~ ❤️
one last thing--i highly recommend either having the song above playing while you read this, or at least listen to it beforehand. yes, it’s a country song, but it really is so good and the lyrics - which i’ve italicized and bolded - seem to reflect Inuyasha’s thoughts perfectly, which is why i thought it fit so well with OLR’s theme.
....shit okay one last last thing: i swear to fuck that the ending jumped out of a scene from a goddamn western harlequin romance novel with its level of cliche and drama and yes i am entirely proud of that fact ;ljadfilajflkahjsfue

She stood beside the bed, feeling empty, cold, hollow as she stared down at the pillows and blankets. It was still unmade, the sheets twisted, messy from her hasty retreat just that morning. Tears burned her eyes as she remembered why; the argument, the begging, the screaming. The heartbreak.
Her heart twinged and Kagome gasped, closing her eyes as she brought up a hand to cover her mouth. Was this…was this really it? Were they really going to leave things like this, unresolved and painful between them? God, she didn’t want to. She wanted to run outside, run through the night to his house, throw open the front door and beg him to—
Her bedroom door crashed open and Kagome gasped, whirling around with wide, liquid eyes, heart in her throat. Golden eyes, furious, hard, bore into her own and suddenly a heat suffused her body, chasing away the previous chill, and her stomach swooped as he shut the door and stalked toward her.
Her breath left her in a stuttered exhale, body trembling, coming alive from the heat in his gaze.
“Inuy—”
“Shut up,” he growled, grabbing her waist, hauling her in tight against him. His lips fell over hers, swallowing her gaps, the crush of his mouth hard, unforgiving, punishing.
Hands – frantic, desperate – removed clothing, touching, grabbing, caressing. They fell on the bed in tangle of limbs, skin against skin, heart against heart, flushed, needy, desperate. Growls, moans, whispered pleas echoed throughout the darkness of the room as they rocked together, moving in a dance as old as time. Fingers grasping sweat slicked skin, hearts thundering wildly and then perfectly syncing in a moment of euphoric completion. A stuttered breath, a gasp of a name; then silence.
Tears trekked down her flushed face as she was gathered against a hard chest, as familiar arms wrapped around her stated body and held her as she cried.
Girl, our mamas are best friends and so are we The whole town's rooting for us like the home team Most likely to settle down Plant a few roots real deep and let 'em grow
Kagome stood in front of the full-length mirror and ran a brush through her still damp hair, the yellow and blue sundress she wore complimenting the blue of her eyes. Blue eyes that were dull as they stared at her reflection, but didn’t really see it.
Which was just as well. She didn’t know why she picked this dress to wear, but had felt compelled to wear it anyway, even if looking at it made the vice on her heart tighten even more.
A gentle knock on her door startled her out of her thoughts and she blinked. Kagome turned her head in time to watch her mother crack open the door and poke her head inside, her smile kind, but her eyes sad. The older woman took in her daughter and her smile faded, but she didn’t comment as she stepped inside.
“Souta brought the car around,” she said softly. “And the keys are in it. Do you need help with your bags?”
“No,” Kagome answered and looked at her reflection again. “I packed most of them in the car last night. I just have my carry-on left.”
Mama nodded but said nothing as gazed at her daughter. Her heart ached at the pain she saw reflected in those dear features, in the eyes were that identical to her late husband’s—Kagome’s father.
“Kagome…” she started, but then sighed as those sad, sad eyes turned toward her once again. Mama shook her head. “Are you going to say goodbye?”
Kagome’s breath hitched. She didn’t need to ask who she was talking about. She swallowed past the lump in her throat and tried to ignore the butterflies that took flight in her belly.
“I…I’m going to try,” she whispered and god help her, but she couldn’t stop the tears from welling in her eyes. “But Mama, I don’t…he probably doesn’t want to see…”
Her throat tightened and she pressed her lips tightly together to stifle the sob that welled up. Immediately arms, warm and familiar, surrounded her. Kagome buried her face in her mother’s shoulder as the tears spilled from her eyes.
“I’ll talk to Izayoi,” Mama murmured and kissed her daughter’s head, her heart aching for her little girl as she felt her own eyes getting hot with the threat of tears. “If anyone can talk some sense into that boy, it’s his mother.”
Kagome sniffled and nodded, grateful that her mother would help her in this endeavor. It was unlikely he’d want to see her, but she had to at least try…
Closing her eyes as her mother rubbed her back and smoothed her hair, Kagome clung to her mother and let herself remember, the memories flashing before her mind’s eye and then fading away just as quickly, only to be replaced by another one, fresher, more precious, more painful than the one before.
But we can't stop this real world from spinnin' us Your bright lights called, I don't blame you for pickin' up Your big dream bags are all packed up and ready to go But I just need you to know
“Shhh! Quit laughing or they’ll hear us!”
Another badly stifled giggle echoed in the night as he drew her into the darkness of the trees, toward their secret spot they’d found years ago. One hand held a six pack while the other held tight to her hand, fingers laced, and he couldn’t stop the grin from spreading across his face before an exhilarated chuckle of his own burst from his lips.
Darkness gave way to the orange glow of a fire, the soft crackling of wood breaking the stillness of the night.
“Why is this so good?”
“Because we’re seventeen.”
“If we get caught, I’m blaming you.”
“Shut up and maybe we won’t be.”
“Hey, this was your idea—”
The rest of the words were stolen in a kiss, a hand coming up to cradle her jaw as a ragged sigh whispered against her lips. He tasted like beer and spearmint gum. She smiled. A strange combination, but it was him, and she loved it.
--
“You should have seen it, Inuyasha,” Kagome gushed a year later, sitting on her bed as she excitedly gushed about her time in LA to her best friend. “The sunset was absolutely gorgeous, like nothing you’ve ever seen before! God, I wish you were there with me. I just know you’d love it.”
Inuyasha smiled and reached forward to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. “I doubt I can love anything more than you.”
Blue eyes widened as a flush spread across her cheeks; her breath hitched, lips forming his name and eyes drifting closed as he leaned forward and took her mouth in a warm, lazy kiss.
--
“Would you ever wanna go?”
“Go where?” Fingers racked through dark hair and her sigh was blissful, a soft melody in his ears.
“California.”
“…You mean like…visit?”
“Well, maybe longer than a visit…like an extended trip, or something…lots of opportunities out that way…”
A brief pause before the fingers continued. “No. …Do you?”
“Mmm…dunno. Maybe after graduation? I had so much fun last time, but…”
“But what?”
A pause. Then, “Nothing. Kiss me.”
A husky chuckle before a pair of lips covered her own and any thoughts about the Golden State far, far from her mind as she returned his kiss.
That I love you more than a California sunset More than a beer when you ain't twenty-one yet More than a Sunday morning Lord Turnin' some poor lost souls 'round, Hallelujah bound
“Ewww, get that away from me!”
“C’mon Kagome, it’s just a worm! It ain’t gonna bite ya!”
“Eeee! Inuyasha, don’t you dare—!”
Laughter as he chased her around with a baited hook, the sound of water splashing as bare feet waded into the lake.
“Wait, I think I got something!”
The crank of a fishing rod as he reeled it in, the water splashing as whatever was caught struggled against the pull. Grunting, muttered curses, and soft giggling before with a splash the bass burst from the water, dangling from the hook.
“You got it!”
“Damn, ain’t nothing more satisfying than that feeling when the bass hits the hook!”
“I can think of one thing…”
Soft lips, warm and smiling, pressed against his own and Inuyasha abruptly decided that yeah, this was definitely better.
--
“California?”
“Yeah! Can’t you just imagine it, Inuyasha? The lights, the nightlife, the ocean, and no more snow! You always complain about the snow.”
“Yeah, but…Kagome, I don’t know…”
“Just think about it, okay? I’m not asking for you to decide right now. But this is something I’ve thought about for a while now, Inuyasha, and I just…I want to experience it with you. Please?”
A pause, and then heavy sigh. “Fine. I’ll think about it.”
A brilliant smile, soft lips pressing to his cheek in a warm kiss. “You know I love you, right?”
“…I know, Kagome. Me, too.”
--
“I can’t believe you’re reading that crap.”
“It’s not crap, it’s romantic. You could probably learn something or two from these books, you uncultured dog.”
“Uncultured? Really?”
“Besides, I like it when the guy gets the girl at the end. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.”
“I can make you feel all warm and fuzzy, too.”
Her gasp was cut off as lips pressed against her neck and hands slipped beneath her shirt to roam across soft skin. The book fell from her fingers to dive into silver hair, eyes closing as her head fell back with a breathy sigh.
--
“Yes.”
The blood was rushing so loudly in his ears he barely heard her and the thundering of his heart against his chest was so forceful, it was a wonder it didn’t leap out into her waiting hands.
“Y-yes?” he echoed, voice naught but a disbelieving rasp as he stared at her with wide, shocked - and cautiously hopeful - golden eyes.
A half-sob, half-laugh burst from her lips and her eyes were bright from more than just the unshed tears brimming the beautiful depths.  Lips trembled as she smiled, hand trembling even more as she held it out before her.
“Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, Inuyasha, I’ll marry you. I—”
What she felt next wasn’t the cool metal of his grandmother’s ring as it found a new home on her finger, but instead the warmth of her beloved’s hand as it wrapped around hers and yanked her forward into his arms. They tumbled to the ground, laughing, crying, exchanging endless kisses and promises of forever as the ring, forgotten on the ground but still nestled within the velvet box, glittered merrily in the warm glow of the fire.
Yeah, I love you more than the feeling when the bass hits a hook When the guy gets the girl at the end of the book But, baby, this might be the last time I get to lay you down 'Cause I can't love you more than my hometown
“Come with me.”
Silence; thick, stony. Cold.
Desperation made her voice high, the words falling from her lips fast. “Inuyasha, please, come back with me—we’d have such an amazing time together, learning, living and—you can enroll in my school, Inuyasha! It’s not too late, there are so many programs to choose from, and I just think you can do so much more with your life than—”
“Than what, Kagome?” The words were snapped, harsh, biting as he whirled around to peg her with a hard stare. “Than taking on the valued responsibility of the ranch that’s been in my family for fucking generations? Than building our fucking house? You know, the one we'll live in after we’re married? I can’t do that, Kagome. I won’t.”
“But that’s just it, Inuyasha, you have no room to grow here! You’re stifled by the responsibility you feel to take over the ranch when leaving could relieve you of that burden! The world is so big, Yash, and there’s so much more beyond this little town, so if you would just trust me—”
“You’re asking me to drop and leave everything I know behind, Kagome!” His voice was loud, thunderous in his anger, his frustration, his pain. “This my home, our home, and you just want me to leave like it don’t even matter! Like the fucking life I’m trying to build for us don’t even matter!”
“That’s why I’m asking you to come with me!” Tears, hot, salty ran unchecked down her face, blue eyes big and pleading and flashing with undisguised panic. “I want to be with you, Inuyasha, I do, but I need you to understand—!”
“Then be with me here, dammit!” A note of desperation, amber eyes pleading, frantic, angry.
A choked sob, a muffled whimper. “I can’t…”
An anguished sound, a shattered cry, and then a door slamming shut, loud, devastating, final.
--
The words slammed into him harder than any blow he’d ever received, the shock greater than hitting the unforgiving ground after falling off a horse, and the pain far, far worse than he ever could have imagined.
Fuck, it would have hurt less if she’d just outright slapped him in the face.
She wouldn’t look at him, her gaze focused on the ground, dark hair hiding her expression. He swallowed once, twice; his mouth felt like a desert, his tongue heavy, thick, useless. His throat worked but no sound came out. Ice replaced the blood in his veins, freezing his lungs, making it hard to breathe.
“Wh…what did you s…” He shook his head, swayed on his feet as he blinked hard. He couldn't have heard her right. She couldn't have just told him—
“…I cheated on you. Inuyasha, I—”
He didn’t hear the rest of what she said. His legs abruptly gave out and he stumbled back, sitting down hard onto the fallen log behind him. The log he’d proposed to her on. The log they’d kissed on—
He shook his head again, a frown pulling his brows down low over his eyes as he tried to register the words spilling from her mouth a mile a minute. Two days…two days ago. That—that didn’t make any sense. He couldn’t—he couldn’t smell anything, couldn’t detect any sort of incriminating evidence that suggested she’d been unfaithful.
Amber eyes lifted, flashing with tentative hope. She’d been drunk—she didn’t remember, so maybe if he told her—
The sight of his grandmother’s ring, nestled in the middle of her palm, might as well have been his heart because it sure as sure shit felt like she’d just ripped it out of his chest. His stomach clenched, the breath seized in his lungs, and a curious numbness spread throughout his entire body. The realization hit him even harder than the pain had, and that in and of itself would have brought him to his knees had he not already been sitting.
Honeyed eyes, agonized, pleading, lifted to her face. Again she would not meet his gaze, eyes closed against the tears that spilled down her cheeks. He suddenly tasted salt and with a start he realized he was crying too, the tears warm as they streaked down his pale face but he gave them no mind.
“K…Kagome…” It was the only thing he could get through a throat tight from anguish. A plea, a prayer, a question all in one as he stared at her, heedless of the tears that continued to fall.
Her eyes squeezed shut and she shook her head; a clenched sob broke from her lips as she reached forward, grabbed his hand, closed his fingers around the ring, giving it back, giving back his heart that she no longer wanted. Pain, sharp and intense, pierced through him and he gasped, unable to do a damned thing as she backed away from him, arms folded around herself.
“I’m sorry,” she rasped, shaking her head, over and over, backing away. “I just…I can’t…”
A sob, borne of a sorrow so deep, of regret and fear and pain so sharp it felt it in the very marrow of his bones, broke free of her lips right before she whirled around and dashed away, through the night, through the trees, away from the fire, away from him.
Inuyasha could do nothing but sit there, his rejected grandmother’s ring clutched in his fist and his vision blurry from hot tears as he watched her run. Curious, that instead of the crushing pain he expected to feel in his chest, there was a hollow ache that resonated, like an echo of a mournful howl for the one who had just run away with his heart.
What hurt more than the pain of watching her go, however, and more than the diamond cutting into his palm, was the jarring realization that the woman he loved more than his own life would rather fabricate a lie of infidelity than be with him.
And because he loved her more than his own happiness…he’d let her.
I ain't the runaway kind, I can't change that My heart's stuck in these streets like the train tracks City sky ain't the same black Ain't that a map dot shame, man, to think that
Sitting on his bed, freshly showered and donned in simple jeans and a t-shirt, Inuyasha’s head was bowed between his shoulders and his arms were propped on his knees. His hands, clenched into tight fists, gradually relaxed and a breath he hadn’t’ even realized he’d been holding rushed from his lungs, escaping his mouth in a harsh exhale that did absolutely nothing to absolve the torment wreaking his mind.
As the last vestiges of the memory faded away, far more painful than all the ones before, he opened his eyes and stared down at the hardwood floor, scuffed and scratched and worn. He frowned, his chest feeling tight, his stomach in knots, his muscles tensing and relaxing with a restless energy that was hard to ignore. He wanted to punch something, to run, to fight, fight for her to stay, fight for them.
But he remained where he was, hands flexing, jaw clenched, eyes shut tight against the pain that was determined to bring him to his knees. God, why, why did she have to—
Gentle rapping on the door before it was cracked open. He didn’t look up but he didn’t need to; he knew why she was here. The ache in his chest intensified, sharped, traveled up to knot in his throat and make it harder to breathe.
She didn’t say anything at first, simply stared. Then, …She wants to see you.”
Inuyasha turned his head, looked out the window.
A pause. Then a sigh, resigned, sad. “Asako called. Before she showed up at the door, I mean. Asked me to talk to you. Said I would, but didn’t make any promises.” Pause. “You already know how I feel about her doing this, but…you should at least say goodbye. You’ll regret it if you don’t. You know you will.”
A tightening of his jaw and a deep furrowing of his brow was her response.
“…I’m sorry, my love.”
The door closed with a soft click.
A minute passed. Two. Three.
Inuyasha exploded to his feet, grabbed the lamp on the nightstand, and hurled it against the wall with a roar that was equal parts rage, frustration, and deep, intense anguish that reverberated throughout the entire house; echoing, thunderous, shattering.
Deafening silence followed his outburst; he sank to his knees and wept.
I love you more than a California sunset More than a beer when you ain't twenty-one yet More than a Sunday morning Lord Turnin' some poor lost souls around, Hallelujah bound Yeah, I love you more than the feeling when the bass hits a hook When the guy gets the girl at the end of the book But, baby, this might be the last time I get to lay you down Cause I can't love you more than my hometown
It was impossible not to hear it. As the color drained from Kagome’s face and her heart clenched in her chest, Izayoi stared at her with eyes hardened from the ache she was feeling for her son, the sorrow she felt at his heartbreak twisted into bitter, resentful anger at the woman standing before her.
Kagome closed her eyes, bit her lip to stifle the sob that welled in her throat, sucked in a shaky breath meant to harden her resolve. It didn’t and she fought not to fall apart on the front porch, locking knees that threatened to give out on her.
“Go,” Izayoi muttered in a voice like flint and ignored the younger woman’s flinch. “You’ve done enough damage here. And I’m not talking about whatever he just destroyed.”
Hot tears pricked the back of her eyes. Her throat tightened, preventing any words, protests, to spill from her mouth. She stared at the older woman with wide eyes, someone who she, for the longest time, had looked upon as a second mother, someone to confide in, to trust.
She found none of the warmth that she was used to seeing. No fondness, no compassion, no understanding. Coldness spread through Kagome’s veins, turning her blood to ice, knotting in her stomach, heavy, uncomfortable.
Izayoi stared back, cold, unforgiving, unregretful.
“I’m sorry,” Kagome whispered.
The older woman pressed her lips into a thin line and looked away, arms tight across her chest.
Rejected, heartbroken, Kagome turned, her feet feeling heavy as they carried her back to her car. The tears ran unchecked down her face now, streaming down pale cheeks. She tasted salt and she got in the vehicle, closed the door. Her body felt like it was on autopilot as she revved the engine and started down the long dirt driveway.
It wasn’t until she had gone halfway that she broke down, great, gasping sobs erupting from her throat. Her vision was blurry from the unending tears and her knuckles were white from gripping the steering wheel so hard. Without even realizing it her foot had slipped from the accelerator and she was merely coasting now, too distraught, too tormented to think about anything else but the pain ravaging her heart. Unbidden one last memory, the most recent, flashed before her mind’s eye, twisting the knife keeper, crushing her, killing her…
“Don’t do this.”
He froze at the softly uttered words, spoken in a tone so raw with pain that it trembled. He swallowed hard and turned his head just the slightest bit, but said nothing.
Silence. Thick, tense, deafening.
Then he tightened his jaw, hardened his eyes, and continued putting his boots on.
A choked sob, the rustle of cloth. “Inuyasha, please—”
“I’m sorry.”
He stood up from the side of the bed and refused to look at her as he collected his jacket, still sitting in a heap on the floor from where it was hastily thrown the night before.
A stuttered breath, followed by the salty scent of tears. His lips drew into a tight line and his hands fisted tightly at his sides as he forced himself to head toward the door. But, goddamn him, he paused right in front of it, hand on the knob, jaw clenched so hard it ached.
“Please,” she begged and the word was a raspy plea, vision blurry from tears. “If you would just—we can talk about this—”
“I love you, Kagome,” Inuyasha said and he heard her sharp intake of breath, but he didn’t turn around. He swallowed once, twice, and closed his eyes as he opened his mouth and forced the words past a throat tight with emotion.
“Inu—”
“But I can’t…love you more than this. I just…I can’t.”
Another sob, a hitched breath, and his chest ached. He bowed his head.
“See you around, Kagome,” he whispered and left, his footsteps fading down the hallway and down the stairs until the slam of the front door echoed in the dark house.
Kagome dropped her face into her hands and wept.
The front door burst open and Inuyasha was desperation personified as he rushed past his alarmed mother, sprinting as fast as he could toward the barn that held the horses. Not even a full minute later a white blur sped from the barn and bolted through the open gate of the pasture, following the car that was leaving with his love, his soul, his very heart.
Standing on the porch, Izayoi pressed a hand to her heart while the other covered her mouth, muffling the sob that burst from her lips as teary eyes watched her son chase after the woman who broke his heart.
'Cause I love you more than a California sunset I love you more in a twenty-dollar sundress Hate that loaded down car you got your keys in Girl, but I hate even more that you're leavin'
Urging his mount to go faster, harder, the thundering of her hooves against the ground rivaled that of the thundering of his heart in his chest. Hands gripping the coarse hair of her mane, Inuyasha grit his teeth against the harsh wind, his eyes wild, desperate and bright with unshed tears as he kicked the mare’s flanks to go faster, dammit, faster!
The distance between them was closing, the rumble of the engine, of gravel crunching beneath tires becoming louder until he was riding alongside her, along the fence that enclosed the front pasture. His hands fisted his mount’s mane in a while-knuckled grip as he leaned over her neck, legs tight to her sides.
He turned his head and wild, despairing golden eyes collided with wide, tear-filled blue.
Kagome’s heart lurched in her chest, making her gasp as goosebumps erupted on her skin. She sobbed, shaking her head, mouthing his name and forcing her eyes to look straight ahead. What—what was he doing?! Why?! God, he was making this even harder than it already was, taking her heart and stomping on it, cruel, cold, conniving.
But it made sense, didn’t it.
She had broken his heart, and now he was doing the same to her.
'Cause I love you more than the feeling when the bass hits a hook When the guy gets the girl at the end of the book But that ain't you and me so I guess I'll see you around 'Cause I can't love you more than my hometown
Inuyasha didn’t let up, not even when she looked away, gritting his teeth, kicking his mount to keep up when she accelerated. She was crying, and although he couldn’t hear her, he could see the way she shook, shoulders jerking, chest heaving, face wet from her tears and fuck she was wearing the sundress—
The end of the drive was in sight. Kagome slowed down, so did he, but she didn’t stop as she once again turned her head and caught his gaze. Inuyasha was already staring at her, heart in his eyes, a silent plea falling from his lips, willing her to hear….
“Don’t go.”
A sob, raw, choked, anguished.
“I’m sorry.”
Without even realizing, he let up on his mount, the mare slowing to a trot, a walk, and then stood still, recovering from the hard gallop. Golden eyes, awash with ears, watched the car reach the end of the drive and turn, driving away, going, going, getting smaller, fading.
Gone.
Something inside Inuyasha shattered and he didn’t think it could ever, ever be repaired.
Love you more than my hometown Love you more than my hometown Love you more, baby, love you more

Inuyasha paced the length of the small hut again, his arms crossed tightly in front of his chest, his ears pinned back, and his hackles well and truly raised. These fucking reiki users really needed to be taken down a notch. First, Kagome spent an entire week sitting him into the ground every time he so much as looked at her. Now, Miroku had the gall to lock him in the sick hut with Kagome and seal the exits with sutras. He stopped pacing and poked a clawed finger at the door. A small pink spark of spiritual energy stabbed at his finger. This was his plan- to slowly drain the power from the wards one annoying poke at a time and then go kill the monk. It might take the whole day but Inuyasha didn’t care. That fucking charlatan only put enough of his ill-suited spiritual power into the barrier wards to keep them in place for a few hours. While he might not want to take a full blast of them by breaking down the door, it was clear Kaede hadn’t helped reinforce them like she had before. He could break them down, eventually. Each painful shock was just another spark of motivation to get out.
“How long are you going to keep that up?”
Inuyasha jumped. He’d been so focused on his poking routine and imagining all the ways he could maim, but not kill, the monk that he’d actually forgotten she was there.
“Keeping what up?”
“Poking the wards. I can feel it every time you do that ya know and it’s not exactly fun feeling my hair poof up every thirty seconds.”
“Well if you aren’t going to get us out of here, one of us has to do something useful.”
“Right, because hurting yourself is the only way to fix things. I’d forgotten.”
That… wasn’t what he was expecting her to say. He stopped his pacing to stand in front of her. She was sitting against the east wall of the hut examining the sole of her black mary-jane shoes that went with her blue uniform skirt and jacket. She’d been wearing the new uniform for nearly two years now and while he thought he’d liked seeing her in green, the blue had definitely grown on him. After a noticeable pause she was still staring at her shoe and ignoring him.
“The fuck does that mean?”
“It means,” she finally turned her head to look at him and he really, really wished she hadn’t. He could see she was angry, he knew that, but he could also see she was on the verge of tears. “It means I thought you’d try and be a little more careful now- after everything.”
He didn’t need her to elaborate on everything.
Everything was their defeat of Naraku last winter.
Everything was the celebratory night of passion. A night in the dirt, still covered in blood - their own and other’s- wasn’t what either of them imagined their first time together would be like, but they’d spent years letting the moment pass them by and they were never letting that happen again. They were alive. They were victorious. They were together.
Everything was their new somewhat leisurely search for the final three or four jewel shards. It didn’t seem like anyone else had found them yet either, and with no Naraku breathing down their necks, the searches felt less frantic as they tried to be more methodical. Sometimes they set out with the whole gang, sometimes it was just the two of them like the old days, meaning lots of time alone.
Everything was the fact Kagome was now carrying his child.
He knew it could happen, he knew what they were doing was risky. But Kagome kept such careful track of her cycle, and who even knew if a half-breed could have children? Well, apparently they could and now he would. That particular revelation wasn’t even what started the fight that led to the week worth of sits which lead to being sealed in the isolation hut. No, he was making craters all over Japan because he’d made the apparently monumental mistake of taking care of her. The fight started when he suggested that Kagome go spend the next eight months at home with her mother while he searched for shards with Miroku and Sango.
The holes had gotten significantly deeper, though, after their last demon encounter. It hadn’t been his smoothest moment, but when the three of them came across a bear youkai four times Inuyasha’s size, their first real threat since realizing Kagome was pregnant, he’d panicked. He stuck her high enough in a tree that he knew she couldn’t climb down after him and left the monk with her to guard the tree. Considering the number of solid hits the demon was able to get in, Inuyasha didn’t regret the decision for a second. Clearly, Kagome felt differently.
“Are you stupid woman?” he asked incredulously.
Kagome sprang to her feet, her face blotchy and red. “I guess I am stupid for caring if you get hurt. Excuse me for thinking you wanted me, and this baby, and for us to be a family. But no, apparently you’re on a suicide mission until you can hide me away on the other side of the well!”
That... wasn’t what he expected to hear either. His ears lowered of their own accord, his brain trying to follow the logic leaps Kagome had just made. His silence wasn’t well received by his irate wife.
“I can’t believe you,” she seethed, “I know we didn’t really talk about children but that’s what happens when you have sex. If you regret it… if you want me to leave just say so, don’t lie to me.”
She took a deep breath, and he could hear her voice start to crack from emotion. Looking very spent, she slumped her back against the wall and slid down to the floor. Her left hand came up and pressed against her belly. Even though she didn’t look pregnant yet, she told him she could already feel the baby’s youkai; she told him she hoped this meant the baby would have his ears.
His ears.
The signal to the whole world that he was an abomination -- a freak and a monster -- she wanted her child to have them. That’s when he decided she needed to go back to the modern era. There she and the baby would be safe while he finished what he needed to do here. Safe while he made their home here, because this incredible woman would give up ramen and hot baths and her family so her dog-eared child could live without having to hide. She was everything to him, how could she think he wanted her to leave?
“You are fucking stupid--” her sharp insulted gasp made his ears pin back but he kept talking before she could interrupt, --“if you think I was ashamed of you. Dammit!  I wouldn’t have told Miroku about the pup if that’s how I felt!”
Kagome huffed and rolled her eyes to the ceiling, “Yelling ‘she’s whelped, if anything happens to her you will never have kids’ while you stick me three stories up a tree and run off isn’t exactly a celebratory announcement.”
Inuyasha frowned. He sighed and took a few steps forward so he could crouch down in front of her and meet her eye to eye. He hated talking about stuff like this, but if she thought he could ever be anything other that obnoxiously, painfully, completely in love with her, then he was going to have to suck it up.
He reached forward and placed his hand over hers on her stomach. He was relieved to see her shoulders relax a little bit at his touch.
“I don’t regret it,” he said in a low rumble, “I don’t regret giving you my pup. But,  I also don’t regret suggesting you go home, and I sure as shit don’t regret sticking you in that tree. You can be as angry with me as you want but I’m not gonna let your pride put you in danger. You’ve always trusted me to take care of you, so let me take care of you now.”
He leaned in, aiming to place a small kiss on her cheek. Kagome turned her head slightly, allowing his kiss to reach her lips. She still wasn’t smiling, but it was progress.
“I’m not some helpless little girl, Inuyasha. I can still help you, or at least I can still look after myself.”
“No, you can look after the pup and I can look after you. That’s how this works.”
The growl that came out of her could rival that of any angry inuyoukai, but Inuyasha refused to back down. He held her glare until she finally released a loud angry breath through her nose- her signal of defeat.
“Fine, you can stick me in a tree when there’s danger. But it needs to be close enough to the ground so I can get down if I need to. Or better yet, use my arrows.”
Inuyasha nodded his silent agreement to her addendum and was almost stabbed in the nose as she stuck her index finger in his face.  “But I’m not going back through the well,” she stabbed at him with the digit again when he made a noise of protest. “This is my home and I’m not leaving. You can be as angry with me as you like but I need to learn how to live here full time before I have a baby to learn to take care of, too.”
He didn’t want to admit she had a good point, so instead he pushed forward to kiss her again, this time finally getting the smile he’d been waiting for. He took a quick sniff to scent her, pleased that she no longer smelled like she was going to cry. He kissed her again, his hand moving from her belly to cup her face. He could smell the spike in her hormones, her body making it clear that she was enjoying the kiss as much as he was. What was it about knowing she was pregnant that made him want to do the thing that got her that way so much more? The morning when she told him her suspicion he couldn’t keep his hands off her-- once the shock wore off anyway. She was right; they hadn’t exactly spoken about having kids but they had spoken about building a hut just outside the village, and about how they wanted a life together. He would have been happy with just Kagome for eternity, but he would be lying if he said he wasn’t thrilled at the idea of a tiny blend of them running around reeking havoc.
He tilted her head back gently and pushed his tongue against her lip, practically begging for entrance. She quickly acquiesced, their kisses becoming less about a silent I forgive you and a much louder I want you.
Her hands made quick work of his obi. Her practiced fingers knowing just how to pinch and tug to remove his garments with what was originally a medical urgency but now had an intimate giddiness to it. She was always quite pleased with herself when his layers fell open in one smooth motion, like it was her greatest accomplishment to render him nude as quickly as possible. He, on the other hand, still struggled with some of her modern garments. Zippers he liked: bra clasps less so. More than once he’d found himself entirely without the patience and took her on all fours still wearing everything but her underwear. But not this time, this time he owed her an apology - and while he wasn’t great with words, he had a different idea of how his tongue could make his feelings known.
Bra finally open, he took a moment to properly appreciate her breasts. He loved how they fit perfectly in his hand, how the skin of her nipples reacted to his touch, how the soft fatty tissue moved as he squeezed it. If she would let him, he’d hold them all day. His left hand maintained its post while his right slid down her side, over the swell of her hips and under her ass. He paused to give her cheek an appreciative squeeze before sliding his whole arm under her. Lifting her with ease he abandoned their pile of clothing and gently laid her down on the clean futon in the corner.
His kisses traveled away from her face, down to her collarbone, then to her navel. He moved slowly, making sure each bit of flesh was thoroughly ravished before moving on. He didn’t apologize often, but when he did it was always wholehearted. He finally reached her hips, parting her knees and settling himself between them. Careful of his claws, he held her open and ran the flat of his tongue along her slit. Her hitched breath was music to his ears. The first time he went down on her, he worried it was more for his pleasure than for hers; that nothing could possibly compare to the ecstasy that rushed through his veins from being this close to her concentrated scent. But as he rolled his tongue against her clit, moving the bud of nerves in a tight circle, the groan that left his wife allowed for no misunderstanding.
While his tongue continued to dance against her, he gingerly inserted his finger, careful not to thrust it in, but instead pushed the pad of his finger up against her walls and began to trace a lazy pattern. When he reached the spot that made her muscles clench around his finger, he pushed harder against it. He heard Kagome’s heart rate increase as she clenched again and he knew she was close. He closed his lips around her clit and sucked, letting his fang just barely graze her.
Her orgasm didn’t come in a rush, or with a scream. Instead he felt her leg twitch and smack against his head, her breath falter, and her already wet center became drenched as she finally released a shaky, contented sigh. He looked up to see her blush spreading from her ribcage to the tip of her nose. As much as he loved making her howl, he loved the drunk, lopsided grin she had now even more. She was content. She was sated and just so fucking happy.
But he wasn’t done.
“Don’t fall asleep on me now, koi, we’ve got work to do.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah - gotta keep up with our practice so the baby can have a sibling later.”
She giggled and leaned up to kiss him slowly, tasting herself on his tongue. He let her push against him until he was sitting with her in his lap, his erection pressed between his belly and her hips. As she kissed him as she ground down, the front of her sex providing delightful, frustrating friction. He needed more, he needed more now. He wanted to take her and flip her onto the floor, but she was pupped, he had to be gentle. He whimpered, his whole body quivering with the strain of staying still.
She giggled again.
She was teasing him on purpose.
His whimper turned into a growl as he opened his eyes to glare at her.
She rolled her eyes in return and reached up a hand to rub his left ear before leaning forward to whisper in it: “I’m not made of glass you know.”
Well, alright then.
In a maneuver more like a neko than inu demon, he rolled them so Kagome laid on her left side as he towered over her. He claimed her right leg and hitched it up so her knee rested on his shoulder, her foot dangling behind him. He straddled her left leg, quickly lining himself up with her entrance. Pushing his hips forward, he gradually slid his length into her; her earlier climax allowing her muscles to quickly stretch and accommodate his girth. Once her thigh was flush with his chest, he leaned forward a little more, stretching her leg as far as she could. Pleased with the position - and Kagome’s slack jawed expression- he started to slowly retract his hips until only the tip of his erection remained inside before ever so slowly pushing back in again.
Kagome, with one leg pinned under him and the other held firmly against his chest, could do nothing to speed him along, and he knew it. After his fourth agonizingly slow thrust he could feel her trying to push herself down, could see her gripping the futon so tightly she was sure to leave little holes in it. But his wife was a proud woman, she wouldn’t beg ... yet.
He licked his thumb and brought it down to where they were joined and began touching her exposed clit in featherlight strokes. He used just enough pressure that he could feel the taunt muscles of her thighs twitch as he changed direction.
Finally she broke, “If you don’t speed up I’ll use the beads; I swear!”
Not begging, but it was the closest he was going to get.
His grip on her leg tightened as he began a much more appeasing pace, this thumb now pressing her clit more roughly against her public bone. Kagome moaned and dug her nails into the flesh of Inuyasha’s thigh, leaving deep, red half moon impressions. It didn’t take long before her breathing became erratic again and her blush started to creep back across her face. This time her climax came loudly, a long audible yeeeeees broken up by Inuyasha’s frantic thrusts. His own finishing cry was muffled as he turned his head and bit into the meat of her calf.
He remained seated deep inside her while the final pulses of his orgasm sent waves of satisfaction through his body. Under him, Kagome twisted to lay mostly on her back, his signal to finally move. Soft and sticky, he pulled out and flopped ungracefully down next to her. Laying on the small futon, Inuyasha pulled his firerat over them like a blanket. Kagome would be asleep in less than a minute and he didn’t want her to get cold. Curling himself around her, he was surprised when she turned in his arms to face him. He shimmied down so he could see her more clearly, letting Kagome use his arm as a pillow.
“You can’t keep being so reckless, ya know,” she said in a slow, sleepy voice. “Running off on your own isn’t gonna fly, mister.” She nuzzled her nose into his collarbone and let out a jaw popping yawn. “Next time let me help - or at least take Miroku with you, please? We need you to be here for a very long time.”
We.
He pulled her tight against his chest and kissed the top of her head.
“I’m not going anywhere, woman, I promise. You’re both stuck with me forever.”
She didn’t answer, her soft snores already filling the hut. He pulled the firerat just a little higher on her shoulder, letting himself be lulled into a rare nap surrounded by his family.

An Untitled Yashahime One-Shot Fic
Hey all! I'm new to Tumblr but I've been a fan of InuYasha since the mid 00's... haven't written a fan fiction in over a decade but I had this idea last night and had to write it out! Feel free to share your thoughts!
-----------------------------
Drama/Comedy featuring Lady Kaede and Moroha, taking place near the end of Yashahime season 1.
-----------------------------
Moroha descended into Lady Kaede's village one evening. She sniffed the gentle breeze in search of her companions, but finding no answer there, she ducked into the old priestess' hut.
"Hey, Lady Kaede!"
Kaede's face spread into a warm grin. "Ah, Moroha, what brings ye here?"
"I was looking for Towa and Setsuna, do you know where they're at?"
"Aye, they are off in the forest, training with the demon hunters." Kaede explained as she peered up through the window, squinting into the harsh evening sunlight. "They should be back any time now. Why don't ye stay and have supper with us? It's just about ready."
Moroha's face lit up. "Sounds great, I'm famished!"
"Have a seat, child. Since you're here, would you mind helping me with these herbs? These old hands of mine grow more weary with each passing day." the elderly priestess explained.
"Leave it to me, Kaede!" the young quarter-demon said as she took the herbs and knife. Her youthful enthusiasm was evident on her face as she quickly sliced and diced, chopping the entire bundle of herbs at lightning speed.
Kaede couldn't help but let out a chuckle.
"What? Did I do something wrong?" Moroha asked, worried.
"Not at all dear, ye've done a wonderful job. It's just that ye are certainly your parents' child. InuYasha possessed great strength and speed, and your mother, among her many talents, was an excellent cook."
Moroha's expression soured. "Yeah? I wouldn't know. Maybe I'd remember if they'd hadn't abandoned me and all."
Lady Kaede was horrified at what she'd just heard. "Heavens no, child! Is that what ye have been led to believe this whole time?"
"I mean, can ya blame me? I don't really know much about them except that they left me with the wolf demon tribe."
"I can assure ye, Moroha, that you were very, very loved by your parents. I don't know what happened to them. One day the three of you were a happy family, living here in this village, and the next day ye had all disappeared without a trace. Not a day goes by that I don't wonder what dreadful fate tore ye away from them. Know this though: InuYasha and Kagome would have never given ye up unless it was the only way to ensure your safety. They wanted nothing more than to raise ye themselves..." Kaede paused, taking a deep breath to quell the lump she felt forming in her throat, "Life can be cruel, that way."
Moroha's gaze fell to the floor, feeling a twinge of shame. She hadn't often heard anyone speak so frankly about her past before, and she often assumed that she was just another unwanted half-breed.
"I- I didn't realize." she stuttered, her eyes still averted.
"It's alright, child." the priestess said, trying to bring the conversation back to a more cheerful tone. "I knew your parents very well. Ye were born right here in this very hut, ye know."
"I was?"
"Aye. I remember the tears of joy streaming down your mother's face the first time she held you. Your father was beaming with pride as he knelt beside her. I remember, when you were only a few minutes old, how Kagome quipped that she was disappointed you hadn't gotten your father's dog ears," Kaede reminisced with a smile.
"Hold up, what?" Moroha was befuddled. "You mean those pointy demon ears? Like Sesshomaru?"
"No, dear, your father had dog ears."
"Oh, you mean he had a great sense of hearing! I definitely got that from him- I can hear WAY better than a human!" Moroha exclaimed, beaming with pride.
"Child, I believe we have a misunderstanding." The old priestess took a moment to consider a better way to explain. "I mean that your father, InuYasha, had the ears of a dog. Furry, white, pointed, ears on top of his head. Like a puppy dog."
"WHAAAAT?! You have GOT to be SHITTIN me!" she screamed, her face a blend of shock and confusion. "WHAT ELSE HAVEN'T YOU PEOPLE TOLD ME???"

The Ronin - Chapter 5
Eep. I know it’s been a while. And you know when I said this was definitely going to be the last chapter? Well, uh, there’s one more to go. Which is 90% done and that I should be posting tomorrow. Please don’t hate me when you get to the end of the chapter - kthxbye!
Tumblr media
“But I wanna go too!” Shippou whined, rubbing his eyes tiredly as they stood in the cool morning air in front of Kaede’s hut. “I promise I won’t get in the way!”
The sun had just peeked over the horizon, making Shippou’s fluffy hair appear even more flame coloured than usual. Kagome bent down to pick him up and squeezed him tight, ruffling his fringe affectionately.
“Not this time Shippou. We should be back tomorrow at the latest.”
It had been Inuyasha’s decision that the kit stay behind, and Kagome agreed with it, but not for entirely the same reasons. Inuyasha was just concerned that Shippou might get himself into trouble, and he would be one more thing to worry about when they were heading into an uncertain situation. Kagome just didn’t want him to know the whole story of how she’d been injured.
Sango knew what had happened, and she was pretty sure that Miroku had some idea, based on his concerned glances towards her whenever he thought she wasn’t looking, and the way he had completely dialed back his usual flirty manner with both herself and Sango. But Shippou didn’t. She knew he was a lot more worldly than a human eight year old, but she didn’t want to see the look in his eyes if either the ronin or that woman said something. She just couldn’t bear it.
“Everything’s gonna be okay, right Kagome?”said Shippou in a small voice, nuzzling into her hand. She hoisted a smile onto her face, not wanting him to worry in their absence.
“I’m sure it will be Shippou”, she soothed, quick to reassure him, squeezing him in a hug which was just as much for her as it was for him. “Do you know what would be really helpful? We’ll probably be really hungry when we get back, and I know you’ve been practicing your hunting skills with the village boys. Do you think you could catch some fish or rabbits for a stew to help out Kaede?”
He stared at her uncertainly for a moment, then nodded.
“Sure, I can do that.”
Kagome glanced at Kaede, and the old miko nodded, confirming that she would do her best to keep the kit out of trouble.
“Travel safely, all of ye”, Kaede said, looking warmly at them. Kirara jumped down from Sango’s shoulder and transformed into her larger nekomata form, allowing Sango and Miroku to climb onto her back. Kagome took a deep cleansing breath of the crisp morning air, then climbed onto Inuyasha’s back as he bent down a little.
“Alright, I’m ready as I’ll ever be. Let’s go.”
The sun was well above the horizon when they began to approach the forest not far from their destination. The mist had all burnt away an hour or so ago, although the air was still chilled. Miroku and Sango flew above on Kirara and Kagome snuggled in tightly on Inuyasha’s back, thankful for his warmth. She yawned, wishing she’d managed to get more sleep. She’d been too keyed up to doze off, her mind racing. So much to think about. And not only about their mission. About her and Inuyasha.
She replayed their conversation at the hot spring over and over in her head. She’d told him she loved him. And even though he didn’t say the words back, everything in his expression, his body language, his tenderness told her he felt the same. In the months since Kikyou’s passing, he’d begun to return those little touches and looks in response to her own, as if he were now free to do so. Words had always seemed to trip Inuyasha up, but when you paid attention to what he wasn’t saying, he could speak so eloquently.
When she’d finally managed to get to sleep, she’d been woken by a nightmare. And he’d been there almost before she’d been able to get her eyes open, picking her up, still cocooned in her sleeping bag, and carrying her back over to his usual position against the wall of Kaede’s hut. She’d spent the rest of the night cradled against his chest, that soothing rumble of his allowing her to get back to sleep for a few hours at least.
The weight of her father’s backpack on her shoulders was comforting. He had often walked mountain trails with friends, and his bag was just as he’d left it. For the first time in a while, she felt closer to him, almost like he was hugging her close. She had felt almost naked without her bow and quiver, but having her father’s backpack helped a little. Kaede had offered hers, but Kagome worried that might leave the village defenseless against a random youkai attack.
“Don’t do anythin’ stupid today Kagome, do ya hear me?” Inyuasha rumbled, his voice barely affected by the ground eating pace he’d been setting. They were getting closer now, the large trees of the forest surrounding the village slowing Inuyasha’s pace and forcing Kirara to fly above with Sango and Miroku.
“Shouldn’t I be saying that to you?” she replied in a teasing tone.
“I mean it wench! I got that feeling in my gut and it ain’t good.”
Kagome sobered immediately. They’d all grown to trust Inuyasha’s ‘feelings’ – he seemed to have an innate sense of when trouble was headed their way; it was probably what had kept him alive so long.
She leaned forward and dropped a light kiss on the side of his neck, sniggering a little as Inuyasha almost missed a step.
“I’ll be careful, but that goes for you too, okay? Don’t underestimate him just because he’s human – we don’t know very much about how many people he’s got working for him. Most of the villagers I saw seemed terrified, but he wouldn’t have so much power over them if he were working alone. He obviously has help.”
Her thoughts drifted to that woman, her expression ice-cold as she’d slapped her, demanding submission, and the probing feel of her fingers as she was held down, the first time anyone else had ever touched her there. She couldn’t help but shiver. She didn’t know what she feared more, the violence of the ronin or the emptiness of that woman’s expression, totally devoid of feeling, like she’d abandoned every ounce of empathy and compassion long before.
Inuyasha’s rumbling purr vibrated against her chest through his back, bringing her out of her thoughts.
“Don’t think about it Kagome”, he said quietly, his thumbs caressing the sides of her thighs.
“How did you know I..”
“Your heart’s beatin’ like a scared rabbit’s, your fingers are pinching my shoulders and you smell of fear” he said gently. He slowed his pace to a halt. “I ain’t gonna let anythin’ happen to you okay?”
Kagome sighed, loosening her grip, and she rested her forehead on his shoulder, sliding down off his back. “That doesn’t seem entirely fair you know”, she smiled, “you being able to work out how I’m feeling without me telling you.” He turned to hold her close, tucking her head under his chin to rub his cheek against her hair.
“Well, I don’t think it’s fair that you smell so damn good. It’s distracting, but you don’t see me holdin’ that against you now, do you?” he replied.
Kagome snorted, not being able to help the blush that tinted her cheeks. This was obviously Inuyasha’s version of flirting.
“Well, I guess we’re even then, because…” Her reply was cut short as Inuyasha suddenly grabbed her around the waist and juked to the right, an arrow passing by his shoulder.
He shoved her behind him snarling, his ears twitching and nose working to find out where their attacker was. He could smell a few men in the area, but it was hard to pinpoint their exact location in the trees above. They watched Kirara swoop down, and there was a startled yelp from a branch not too far away. The nekomata dropped an older man at Inuyasha’s feet, purring at Sango’s praise as she scratched the feline behind her pointed ears.
“Please, don’t kill me, I missed on purpose. I didn’t want to attack you!” The old man sunk to his knees, his bow clattering to the ground. “None of us want this but he has all of them, women and children, locked up in the head man’s house. He’s threatened to burn them alive if we don’t bring you back. Please, have mercy!”
Miroku and Sango approached with Kirara riding on Sango’s shoulder in her tiny kitten form as Kagome turned her horrified gaze to Inuyasha.
“Still want me to go easy on this asshole when we get there Kagome?” he snarled. The man shrunk back a little at the sound of Inuyasha’s snarl, and Kagome squatted down to the older man’s level.
“Be at ease”, she said gently. “We came back to offer our help.” The older man gazed into her smiling face, the bruising still vibrant against her naturally pale skin.
‘Thank the Kami”, he breathed. “They must have brought you to us. Nothing has gone right in our village since we took in this man. Truly you are heaven sent.” He dropped his forehead to the ground, which had Kagome flushing furiously in embarrassment.
“Please, don’t” she murmured, waving her hands in front of her. “It’s just the right thing to do. I could just see how frightened everyone was.”
Miroku stepped forward. “Perhaps you could explain what has been happening in your village, so we know how best to proceed?” he asked.
The man sighed, still looking uncertainly at Inuyasha’s angry expression, then sat up. The three humans sat down near him to listen, Inuyasha choosing to remain standing. Kirara dozed off in Sango’s lap.
“My name is Kenta. Last year, just before the first snow, a man came out of the forest. My wife Haruna found him laying near the stream when she went to do the washing. He was wandering in his wits – he had a head wound that was healing badly and infected. She took pity on him and brought him into our home.
It was clear to me that he was a samurai; he wore silk, and had two swords and armour. But the insignia on his equipment was not that of this land’s daimyo, and we had no idea of how far he had travelled with his injury. The village council decided we should help him. We did not think he would survive, truly there was a night where his fever raged so badly we began making preparations for his burial.
But then the fever passed and he began to regain strength. My wife nursed him back to health. He was a man of few words, but he told us his name was Eto Shinpei, that he was a samurai of a lord far to the north. He said there had been a skirmish with no survivors other than himself - he had been injured and left for dead, and then lost his way. We expected that he would leave to rejoin his lord as soon as he was able. But he made no move to leave the village. Perhaps that should have alerted us as to what was to come.”
The man hung his head and sighed. “I am not sure where he got the money from, but he moved out of our home as soon as he was able and took a room at the local inn. He began inviting men to his room, handing out sake like it was water, drawing followers to his side. He said he would train them before returning to his lord, in thanks for his rescue. Some believed it was a good thing, that he would be able to protect us from the bandits that had roamed the area the previous year, but others were not so sure.
It became apparent soon enough what sort of man he was. Previously our village had been quiet and peaceful, but he began recruiting outsiders, men with an evil reputation. Fights began to break out, and it was not safe for our women to be out after dark. One of the younger village lads, who had initially joined eager to be part of the militia and learn the skills to defend his home, overheard a conversation and went to warn the headman. He had learned that Eto was planning to set himself up in a position of power in the area, and that he planned on never leaving.”
Miroku interrupted. “Could you not have sent someone to alert your lord of this man’s transgressions? Surely he would want to defend such an attack on his land and people?”
Kenta shook his head. “I am a member of our village council. Our daimyo has long been focused on major conflicts to the east, and allows his villages to self govern, as long as we supply him with his dues at tax time. It seems Eto had figured this out, and decided to take a chance to elevate himself. It is clear to me now that he had disgraced himself in some fashion and been exiled, had become a ronin. We may never truly know what happened.”
Miroku nodded. “My apologies for the interruption, please continue.”
“The headman invited Eto to his home, wanting to get to the bottom of things. Before we knew it, Eto had slaughtered the head man and his sons. The boy who had warned the head man was also hunted down and killed by Eto’s men. The women in the head man’s family were kept in the compound, no one has seen them, even though we have tried to approach. Anyone who tried to stand up to Eto was beaten, with threats made against their family.”
His fists clenched tightly. “The members of the council met in secret, and we decided to oust this man and the outsiders he brought into our village. There was a skirmish, but not everyone has weapons. My sons…” his voice caught, and he took a deep breath before continuing. “My family are confident using archery, but we are a farming village – many men had only their farm tools. It was over quickly. Eldest sons from any family that had participated were executed.”
He looked up at Kagome’s anguished gasp, his gaze bleak. “My eldest son. My Daitaro. He was one of the men killed. Nine men in all. All of them good, strong boys, who did not deserve such a fate. My daughter-in-law a young widow, with two even younger mouths to feed. So much pain and suffering as a reward for saving this man. I wish my wife had never found him.” His head bowed lower, his fists clenching on his knees.
“You said he had the women and children?” Miroku prompted. He sighed and nodded.
“All the women and children are there in the head man’s compound where Eto has taken up residence – he and his men ambushed our homes and took them by force during the night. My wife, my daughters-in-law, my grandchildren. Eto was raving, demanding that he would not allow you to escape, not at any cost. I fear the head wound he received has made him unstable, although I do not know for sure, not knowing what he was like previously. But he is a violent, unscrupulous man, who has decided his word is law. We were told that we needed to find you and bring you back, or they would be burned.”
“Even though your Lord is too far away to assist you, could you not request help from a nearby village?” asked Sango. The old man shook his head.
“He has a foothold there too. No one has been able to get far enough away to ask for help, without Eto’s men hunting us down.”
“Don’t worry”, Inuyasha snarled, “it will be my pleasure to help you clean up the filth in this village.” His voice had taken on a deeper tone, and Kagome could feel his youki pulsing. She stood, standing close by and he wrapped his hand around Tessaiga while the other drew her back against his chest. She rubbed the fist clenched around Tessaiga’s hilt soothingly.
“If he has the village men out looking for us, where are his men?” asked Kagome.
“Most are out here in the forest, and some are there guarding the compound, at least five. I’m not exactly sure how many there are,” said the old man apologetically, gazing at Kagome and Inuyasha in wonderment.
Sango nodded. “It sounds like we need to split up. Miroku and I haven’t been seen previously. We could head through the forest and gradually alert the village men and take out the outsiders, and then work our way back to the village. Inuyasha and Kagome can head to the compound so Kagome can get the women to safety while Inuyasha deals with the rest. We just need to figure out how to assure the village men that we are on their side.”
The man let out a low warbling whistle, that sounded similar to one of the many small birds that lived in the Japanese countryside. A tall burly man carrying his own bow dropped out of a tree nearby and jogged over to them. Inuyasha gave a rumbling growl, and Kagome squeezed his arm. He huffed and rolled his eyes, but ceased the growling.
“Did you hear everything Chojiro?” the old man asked.
“Yes Otousan – I will help the monk and the taijiya alert the men loyal to the village, and then we will double back to oust the outsiders”, he said, bowing low to Miroku and Sango.
“What about us?” asked Kagome. “What if we pretend that you caught us – wouldn’t that get us straight into the compound? Then we could easily capture Eto and…”
“No.”
“But Inuyasha, it would…”
“I said no Kagome. I will find a way to get you inside to help the trapped women and children and then guard your escape. You will not be getting within inches of this fucker, do you hear me?” She looked up at his face, and was a little dismayed to see the pale lavender of his youkai markings on his cheekbones, so faint that if someone was not familiar with his usual appearance they would not notice them. She sighed, then nodded her agreement.
“Alright then, let’s go.”
The walked together with the old man through the forest. Occasionally they would hear a low whistle, which Kenta would reply to, and a villager would appear out of the trees approaching cautiously. Kenta would explain the situation, sending them off to find Miroku and Sango. He led them around the periphery of the village, staying out of sight under the shadow of the trees, until they reached the back of the headman’s compound which backed onto the river.
“We’ll take it from here”, Inuyasha grunted. The old man looked at him beseechingly, and he softened his expression. “Don’t worry old man, we’ll get them all out.” Kenta bowed, then disappeared off through the trees.
“I still got that bad feeling Kagome, so don’t do anythin’ ridiculous, okay?” whispered Inuyasha. She smiled at him, reaching up to place her palms on his cheeks then drawing him down for a soft kiss.
“I’ll be good.”
She moved to pull back, but his mouth followed hers, his kiss insistent. He backed her up until they were underneath the cover of the trees again, his clawed fingers cupping the back of her head, his tongue lapping at her lower lip, taking away the faint swelling that remained from her cuts, then nibbling gently with his teeth.
“I mean it Kagome”, he groaned, his mouth dropping to press against the soft skin underneath her ear, taking in deep breaths of her scent. “I’m only just hangin’ on here. I need you safe, and I won’t be able to hold back if he touches you again.”
“Inuyasha, please”, she whined softly as he nibbled at her throat, her hands clutching at his collars as her head fell back against the rough bark of the tree. The rumbling in his chest increased at the sound of her voice, and his tongue lapped at the soft column of her neck. How could him touching her there feel so good? It was just her neck. What would it feel like when they finally ventured into touching other places? She wanted nothing more than to push herself up against him, to kiss him, to explore these new feelings. But now was not the time. “I don’t want to stop this, I really don’t, but we need to go.”
“Just gimme one more minute. I need this.” He eased the collar of her shirt to one side, biting down gently on the corded muscle between her neck and shoulder, fangs pressing gently. This obviously meant something to him, but what? She let her head fall to the side, letting him do what he wanted, and the rumbling purr increased.”
“My Kagome.” Inuyasha released his hold on her, standing up straight, and cradled her face in his hands. “Saiai, please be safe.” He kissed her one last time, his focused gaze burning amber, then turned to squat down in front of her so that she could climb on his back.
He leapt up to the top of the nearest tree, then went from rooftop to rooftop, landing almost soundlessly on light feet, until they were on the roof of the main building in the compound. No one looked up.
“Idiots. There’s no one guarding the back”, Inuyasha snorted softly.
“Maybe because they don’t think anyone will be able to get across the river?” suggested Kagome, keeping her voice to a low whisper.
“Feh. There’s bound to be guards in the room where they’re holding them, so I want you to let me handle it, okay?” Kagome nodded, squeezing his shoulder to show her agreement.
Inuyasha leaped down from the roof, landing almost silently in a small landscaped garden near a covered walkway. Kagome slid off his back, standing up to take in their surroundings. Almost immediately there was the sound of running footsteps, and Inuyasha spun to backhand the man moving to attack them so hard that he flew back against the wall with a crash, his unconscious form crumpling on to the ground.
“Oops?” he chuckled as Kagome glared at him. Another guard appeared, and Inuyasha punched him too. He toppled like a felled tree, and Inuyasha stepped over him to guide her over to the covered walkway.
“A little overkill, don’t you think?” she muttered, as they walked quietly, her attention focused ahead of them.
“Nope.”
She rolled her eyes, poking him in the ribs and ignoring his almost silent snigger. At least punching a few people had improved his temper a little.
“Which way?” she asked, when they came to the end of the path. He placed his hand on the small of her back, guiding her to the left.
“I can hear little kids cryin’ over this way.”
Her heart in her mouth, Kagome walked with him, doing her best to walk as silently as possible. She wished she had her bow – that always made her feel braver. She knew she would never be a physical close range fighter like Sango, but at least with her bow she could protect people she cared about, and fight back. When they reached the corner, Inuyasha motioned for her to stop, then disappeared. There were a couple of thumps, and then he reappeared, his smile wide, holding up two things she recognised instantly.
‘Look what I just found.”
Kagome almost squealed out loud, covering her mouth to stop the sound coming out. “My bow! Where did you find it?”
“One of the goons at the door had it. Don’t look like he used it yet.”
With a beaming smile Kagome took her quiver from him and shrugged it over her shoulder, then grabbed her bow and knocked an arrow in readiness.
“Better?” he asked, a small crooked smile lifting one corner of his mouth.
“Much”, she agreed, taking a deep breath.
They stepped over the two unconscious men, and Inuyasha opened the door. A burly man with a sword swung at him from the side, but Inuyasha had him disarmed and unconscious in moments. Kagome breathed a sigh of relief, and placed her arrow back in her quiver. She padded quickly over to the group of huddled women and crying children, who were looking at Inuyasha in alarm.
“Is there a Haruna here?” she asked quietly. An older woman looked up, surprised to hear her name mentioned. Kagome smiled. “Kenta sent us. He and your son, Cho… Chojiro was it?” The woman nodded, tears coming to her eyes as she heard the names of her husband and son. “He and Chojiro are working with friends of ours to disarm the outsiders. If you come with me, Inuyasha and I will guard your escape. We need to take you a little way from the village, until it is all safe again. Is there a hill or a clearing nearby that would be a good place?”
Another woman spoke, cuddling a baby tightly to her, while a toddler huddled into her lap. “I know of a place. There is a clearing not too far from the river, where Daitaro…”, her voice cracked a little, and then she continued, “where Daitaro used to practice his archery.” The arm of the older woman went around her shoulders, and they shared a look, both blinking back sudden tears.
“C’mon, we gotta move, this ain’t no picnic”, muttered Inuyasha. The group of women rose cautiously, gathering their children and making shushing noises when the children began asking questions. Kagome scooped up the toddler of the woman who spoke, so that she only had her baby to carry, and Inuyasha stooped down to pick up two little boys, who looked at him with wide eyes and then back at their mother. She hovered anxiously for a moment, then nodded, her arms already full of two smaller children. He led them out into the vegetable garden at the back of the compound, halting them for a moment to sniff the breeze, then gesturing them to follow along the river bank. The little girl Kagome was carrying tugged on her shirt.
“Why does he have puppy ears?” she whispered around the thumb in her mouth. Kagome looked down at the small child in her arms. She guessed she was three or four at the most, her dark eyes round with wonder as she gazed at Inuyasha's ears, hair pulled back in small pig tails, and chubby pink cheeks streaked with dried tears. Kagome glanced up at Inuyasha too and almost giggled when the ears in question swiveled back towards them, obviously listening.
“They help him hear better”, she whispered back with a smile, shifting the toddler onto her hip.
“Will he hear the bad men that killed Papa?” A faint rumble was heard coming from the hanyou in front of her, and Kagome swallowed before answering, her throat constricting.
“Yes. That’s why we’re here to help.”
“Good.” The small child snuggled in tightly against her, her eyes leaving Inuyasha to focus on the woman walking beside Kagome. “Mama?”, she asked sleepily.
“I’m here Akiko”, the woman said quietly. She hesitated for a moment, then spoke to Kagome. “I am sorry I could not help you the day he brought you to the village.” Kagome’s eyebrows furrowed in puzzlement, and the woman continued. “Eto was dragging you along the street. You looked at me and asked for help and I turned my back on you.” She bit her lip. "I am ashamed", she whispered.
Kagome suddenly remembered the terrified woman standing in front of her home with a child, who ducked behind the door covering.
“It’s alright,” she replied, giving the woman a small smile. “There is no need for shame. You are a mother – your children should always come first.”
“Thank you for understanding”, she whispered. “If Daitaro had been there, maybe… maybe…” She closed her eyes, pressing her lips tightly together, unable to stop her bottom lip trembling.
Kagome’s breath caught in her throat. She had been going to say ‘everything will be okay’, but for this family, it wouldn’t be. Things would never go back to the way they had before. She took another deep breath.
“When my father was killed, my mother was sad for a very long time”, she began hesitantly, keeping her voice to a whisper. “But Mama said talking about him helped. Talking about all the silly things he did and said, all the things we loved about him, kept him alive in here”, she said, gesturing towards her heart. “I only have a few clear memories of my father, because I wasn’t much older than Akiko, but those precious memories I do have survived because even though Papa was gone, we still talked about him all the time.”
Kagome focused her gaze on Inuyasha’s strong back and the pointed white ears twitching on his head, trying to give the woman as much privacy as she could. Even now they were under the shadows of the trees as they approached the clearing, the tears trickling down the woman’s face were clearly visible. “I am so sorry this has happened to your family”, she said, her voice determined, “but we will do our best to make things as right as we can.”
They entered the clearing, and the women sat down, gathering in a circle with their children in the centre. Inuyasha was pacing nervously and she moved towards him.
“Is everything okay?” she asked. She almost giggled when he sneezed violently, but then she caught his expression. “What’s wrong?”
“I can smell somethin’ – it ain’t a smell I know, but I don't like it. We need to be ready.” Kagome was about to put Akiko down and let her toddle back over to her mother, when Inuyasha suddenly snarled.
“Kagome, get back, he’s here!” He pushed her backwards, away from him, and she only just managed to keep her footing with the added weight of Akiko in her arms.
A small clay pot flew through the air, smashing in front of Inuyasha, and dark yellow smoke billowed out, the stench making him stagger back.
Kagome coughed, doing her best to tuck Akiko’s face into her chest closely to shield her. “Everyone cover their face and try not to breathe in the smoke! If you have a scarf, wrap it around your child’s mouth and nose!”
Inuyasha dropped to the ground, retching suddenly, and with horror, Kagome realised that whatever had been thrown at them was probably targeted to him. Sango carried powdered youkai poisons which she burned to immobilise youkai. Many only stunned but a few were deadly - what had been thrown?
She squinted into the smoke, coughing as it irritated her own throat. Putting Akiko down so she could knock an arrow, she aimed desperately from one point to another, trying to find a target, but it was impossible. She could hear the frightened wails of small children behind her, feel the frightened grip that Akiko had on her leg. Her mother was calling to her frantically, but it appeared the small child was too frightened to move. Inuyasha retched again and Kagome knew they needed to end this fast, so they could find Sango and hopefully administer an antidote.
“Show yourself, you coward!” she screamed, her bowstring pulled taut and ready for release, her weeping eyes focused on the direction of where the clay pot had come from. There was a startled scream from Akiko, and the small child was wrenched away from Kagome’s side making her stagger.
The wind shifted, blowing some of the smoke away, and Kagome blinked in terror. He was there, the ronin, and he had Akiko, one arm wrapped around her waist, and the other holding a short tanto blade against the girl’s neck, the cold metal glinting in the sunlight.
“I’ll cut her throat”, he snarled, shaking the small girl like a kitten as she struggled to get free. At the touch of cold metal on her neck the child froze, her wide eyed stare frozen on Kagome’s face. Kagome could hear the stifled wail of a woman behind her, and the little girl whimpered, slow tears streaking down her face.
“Mama.”
The word was faint, like a whispered prayer, hardly audible over the coughing growl of Inuyasha as he struggled to clear the putrid smelling smoke from his lungs. If her nose and eyes were streaming, he must be in agony. She hoped with all her might that the others might have seen the sudden plume of smoke and would come to investigate. As far as she knew, Sango, Miroku and Kirara were still leading the villagers in an attack against the ronin's mercenaries. Kagome focused on the man and child in front of her, blocking out the sound of Inuyasha’s coughing snarls and the frightened women and children behind her.
She slid her quiver slowly off her shoulder, freezing as the burly man pressed the short blade closer to the child’s neck. A thin rivulet of blood trickled down her pale throat, and she heard the mother moan behind her.
“A child makes a very poor hostage”, Kagome said, trying to keep her voice steady.
“You offering to take her place woman?” he leered. “You very rudely left before we could start anything fun. You coming back for more?”
Kagome’s back stiffened as she heard the frenzied growling from behind her. Inuyasha was obviously trying to stagger to his feet, but then fell again, hard. She had no idea what it was that had been thrown at him, whether it was meant to poison him or just slow him down. She wanted more than anything to turn to him, make sure he was okay. But a child’s life was at stake here. Maybe if she could keep Eto talking…
“What if I did agree to go with you. Would you let the child go? You know she’ll only slow you down.”
She dropped her bow on the ground, and stepped forward, holding her hands up in a gesture of surrender. Her heart was beating so fast she could practically feel it like a hard ball of muscle bouncing in her chest. The little girl blinked at her with wide frightened eyes; she’d stopped moving as if knowing it was useless to fight against the strong grip that held her. Kagome strengthened her resolve. This was the right thing to do. She could not stand by and see a child injured when she could do something about it.
“I promise, I’ll let you take me without a fight. Just let the girl go.”
In a movement that was so fast she hardly had time to gasp, the girl was thrown aside, and the ronin had hold of her, one fist wrapped around her hair, extending her neck so that her face tilted upwards, the other pressing his tanto close to her throat. She could feel the cool sting of the metal against her skin and she froze.
“See that dog? You’ve lost.” The ronin yanked back on her hair so her face was tilted skyward, and she had to struggle to keep Inuyasha in view. “My men are scattered. I will have start over again at another village. You might have destroyed everything I’ve worked for, but you’re going to be the loser. Because I’m going to take this girl of yours and ruin her beyond recognition. That poison should paralyze you for an hour or so, and my men will keep the other two busy while I make my escape. By the time you find her, there’s not going to be much left.”
Kagome’s eyes widened when she saw the pure fury on Inuyasha’s face. He tried to stand, and dropped again, his claws scrabbling convulsively in the earth. Drool dripped from his mouth as he snarled out her name.
“Inu…”, she whispered. “I’m sorry.”
She hissed as the ronin yanked on her hair again. “Not as sorry as you’re gonna be, bitch. Time to leave - you and I are going to get much better acquainted”.
The ronin laughed as he backed them into the trees, away from the clearing. Tears slipped down Kagome’s face as she watched as Inuyasha kept struggling to stand, his frenzied howling of her name growing louder. She tried her best to keep her eyes on him, wanting to convey to him her sorrow that she had been unable to follow his plea that she keep herself safe. The ronin sheathed his blade, then wrapped his fist around her wrist, dragging her off into the shadow of the trees.

And They Were Roomates : chapter 1
(A/N: I have no idea if inserting a read-more is possible on mobile and I don't have a desktop at the moment so I truly apologize if this is just a wall of text. If you know how to do this, let me know? Thank you!)
This day had started out with so much promise, Kagome thought with a heavy heart. She was standing on her new balcony-- that is, the balcony of her new apartment-- with her cellphone pressed to her ear.
"No, no… really, I understand!" She insisted again.
"I'm so sorry Kagome! I swear I would never even consider it, unless it was something incredible..."
"Stop apologizing, Sango! This is huge! You should be celebrating, not apologizing." Kagome pressed her lips to prevent a quiver. She was happy for Sango, but she couldn't help but be disappointed for herself. They were supposed to share this apartment together, until Sango landed her actual dream job. Taijiya Games had offered her a developer position on their newest title, and although Kagome barely knew what that meant, she knew Sango had all but given up on getting a job that good until now. There was no way in hell she'd make Sango feel guilty for taking the opportunity, even if she had to go to the UK for it. "You're going to be great! Even I'll play your game, I swear,"
Sango sniffed, and chuckled at her enthusiasm. "Thank you so much for understanding, Kagome. The second I get back to Tokyo we'll go--" the line cut out, and Kagome pulled her phone from her face to find the sign off logo filled the screen. The battery was dead.
She stood alone on her balcony, watching the sun set over the city. This view was beyond gorgeous, which only made all of this harder. She'd saved up as much as she needed for her own half of the rent, but without Sango's half, she wouldn't be here long. It'd be faster to sub-lease it instead of finding another roommate, and that's what she'd start on tomorrow. For now, she just enjoyed the view, although it was a little blurred with tears. She wiped them away, but paused when a strange noise came from inside her empty apartment.
<!--more-->
<p/> Looking in, there was almost nothing but stacks of boxes against every wall. The sun had just dropped below the skyline, casting the entire room in eerie shades of blue and purple. The sound happened again, and this time she thought she knew what it was. The front door was being opened.
She held her breath as she watched through the sliding glass door, mentally retracing her steps back to when she definitely locked it, when she heard the door open, then slam shut. She jumped when a shout came from within, sounding something like a name, then just incomprehensible slurring as a pile of boxes tumbled over. She realized all at once that someone must have seen her moving, and broken in. First Sango, and now this.
She cursed to herself in a panic, whirling around to find something to defend herself with. Her panic only rose when she realized she had nothing except a few plastic plants and a folding lounge chair at hand. She shot a glance over the edge of the balcony in hopes of maybe escaping that way, but it was a straight drop ten stories down into the busy streets below. She looked to her phone, trying to turn it on for just a few seconds longer to call for help, but it was completely drained. She pinned her eyes back on the door when the person within made another noise, and appeared in the  entryway. Kagome was paralyzed in fear as she watched the stranger steady himself on the nearest wall, digging inside his jacket pockets for something.
As she remained pinned in pure terror, she noticed how the stranger swayed, and grumbled to himself, and how frustrated he was with jacket pockets. He looked like he was constantly one second from stumbling over, but somehow managed to stay upright. There was a word for what he was. Drunk. Very very drunk. More importantly, he was totally oblivious to her presence. Hoping to keep it that way, she ducked down against the railing, sitting on her knees and keeping her head just high enough to watch him.
He called out that slurred name again and waited, but obviously there would be no answer. She realized with some relief that since he was calling for someone he thought lived here, he probably wasn't there to rob her, but in fact had chosen the wrong apartment due to being so drunk. He was most likely a neighbor, not a burglar. She jumped again when he suddenly barked out a laugh of triumph, having successfully pulled whatever he'd been looking for from his jacket. He sauntered over to the glass door of the balcony, and Kagome silently fell back on her butt, pulling her knees up to her chest in defense. That was when his eyes finally glanced up, pausing on none other than a horribly confused and frightened Kagome.
“Oh… shit, erm… h’llo.” He mumbled, pushing off the door frame and swaying his way over to the railing, which he leaned on with some force. She gasped and reached out when it looked for a moment like he might tip over it, but he quickly steadied himself, sticking a slightly bent cigarette between his teeth. She eyed the crumpled pack in his hand and decided that must have been what he'd been searching for. Next she noticed his jacket-- red leather with something she couldn't quite see embroidered on the back. The pockets did not look all that complicated to her. His hair was very long, straight even though the rest of him looked a little disheveled, and even more interesting, it was snowy white. Her eyes froze when they raised higher, spotting what looked like animal ears on top of his head.
Overall he was about as strange as any stranger could have been.
He looked down at her as he started a new search through his pockets, eventually pulling out a cheap plastic lighter.
“Well… Fuck," His low voice rumbled as his amber colored eyes looked over her, sending a chill up her spine. "Ain't you a pretty ‘un.” He laughed once to himself as he flicked the lighter, once, twice, three times before getting it lit. He held it to the tip of his cigarette and took a long drag, the orange glow lighting his face. He was handsome, she realized then, although his habits were anything but attractive. He puffed out a plume of smoke and made a sound like a sigh before finally losing balance and dropping down to the ground beside her. If the movement hadn't been so sudden, it almost might have looked like it was on purpose.
Kagome thought about asking if he was okay, but he didn't seem to be hurt as he propped his back against the railing, letting his head rest on the metal. He took another drag from the cigarette before turning his face to give her a very focused look. “You wit’ uh… Koga n’ them, or what?” He asked casually. Kagome blinked, lightly clearing her throat as she thought of how to respond to that.
“Um… I think… you may have the wrong apartment.” She said delicately, hoping this revelation wouldn't throw him into some kind of drunken rage. He turned to look around, seeming to weigh the likelihood of that statement before resolutely shaking his head.
“Uh… no-pe. This’ where I live ‘m pretty sure.” He sorted another laugh, like she was the ridiculous one here. Kagome inched away a little further, wishing she hadn't talked to Sango quite so long.
“Well… no, you see, this is actually my apartment, so… if you wouldn't mind…” She pursed her lips as he narrowed his eyes at her once again.
“What're you talkin’ about ya crazy broad? If this’ Your apartment, ha’come I got a… a, uh… where the fuck d’I put that damn thing…” He rummaged through his pockets again while Kagome waited. He bit the cigarette between his teeth to free up both hands, concentrating very hard on the task, before finally producing a keychain. “Ah! Uh key! Howcome I gotta key, huh?” As he spoke the cigarette fell from his lips, and he dropped the keys on the ground before her to pick it back up. Once it was retrieved, he took another drag, glancing between her and the keys with a raised brow. With an inward sigh, she decided she could at least direct him to the correct apartment if She knew what number he was in. Kagome hesitantly picked up the keychain, turning through the keys until she found the familiar one, labeled 5J, otherwise known as the very apartment they were both sitting in.
“Seeee?” He sneered with a smile, “S’my apartment.” He leaned closer to point at the key in question. “Five-J.” He read aloud. Kagome was hit by the smell of liquor and inched away again, offering the keys back.
“Well… that is a key to this apartment, but I assure you, I live here, not you. See?” Kagome produced her own keys, pulling up her own 5J key and holding it out. He glanced at it and rolled his eyes dramatically, heaving a loud groan.
“That fuckin’ Koga! I keep tellin ‘m not ta give out the damn key to every-fuckin-body, but here we ‘r. I don't give a fuck how fuckin sexy ya are, ya can't liv ‘ere… Gonna mess up th’ whole thing we got goin with the band 'n all them-- fuckin yoko-ono n’ shit, you know what I mean? Keh!” He gave a dismissive wave of his hand in her general direction. No, no she did not know what he meant. From what she could understand most of his vocabulary seemed to be the f-word. She could tell, however, that she wasn't going to get him to leave without calling the police, and her phone was dead. As she shifted her gaze towards the apartment, she realized she didn't have the faintest idea where a charger might be, either. The situation was looking bleak, and after all that had happened that day, it was just a tad too much. She sniffled once, then twice, and a couple small frustrated tears filled the corners of her eyes.
“Awe damn it, don't-- come on!” Protested the drunk stranger. “No crying!”
“Oh, should I laugh!?” She shot back, wiping her eyes for the second time that night. He didn't react, other than snubbing out on the concrete. She noticed through her teary gaze that there were several black marks there, and she absently felt annoyed she'd have to clean the marks off.
“No, you should shut up and…" He trailed off when she gave him a look like daggers. "Uh… go ‘t sleep with me?” He asked, giving her a daring smirk that was way too charming for someone so very intoxicated.
"I have pepper-spray, and I'm not afraid to use it." She threatened seriously. He barked out another laugh.
“Fine, s’wortha shot…” He fumbled onto his feet, adjusting his jacket before sauntering off towards the door. Before he made it all the way there, he half-stumbled into her lounge chair and tumbled into it. He looked like he might try to stand up again, but evidently found the cushion to be pretty comfortable. Instead of correcting his course, he sprawled out, mostly on his stomach, and promptly passed out.
Kagome blinked, watching his chest rise and fall for a moment before pulling herself up on the railing. She moved as silently as a shadow across the balcony and darted through the glass door, carefully but quickly closing- and locking- it behind her.  <p/>

She awoke with a start. It wasn’t the first time this had happened since she moved out of her family’s shrine. It had only been a month maybe since it had become a permanent move. She got a nearby one-bedroom apartment; she needed her own escape—she meant place! She gathered her surroundings and realized she was completely alone… like usual… until she noticed the sound of running water…
What. The. Fuck. Happened???!? She remembered she hit the sauce pretty hard last night. Last night marked four of the longest years of her life. Four long years without her friends from the other side of the well. Four years without the love of her life. Four years of pure misery… Ugh her head was going to split in two from her careless actions or probably the worst hangover she had ever had…
Since her quick departure from the Feudal Era four years ago, she couldn’t shake her rampant and monstrous dreams. They caused her frequent disruptions throughout the night and drove the need for alcohol (well, to be honest, that wasn’t the only reason for her to start drinking). College had been not the best experience—especially when she had to share a room with a roommate. She knew her dorm mate didn’t care for her; in-regards-to: well-being, modesty, or just all around courtesy. She often had a pillow (sometimes heavier objects) thrown at her if she was screaming or crying in her sleep to wake her up, had her food ate without permission, or had her privacy violated…But the worst thing was—her roommate was what one would have referred to as ‘loose’. And by that, she didn’t care that she entertained men. No, she understood. Your body, your rules. Kagome didn’t care about what or who she did that with… She did, however, care her roommate did it when she was in the same freaking room!!!!
She often had to find refuge in Yuka and Eri’s room. Ayumi had decided to travel abroad her year having taken extended courses in high school of German to prepare her. But their second year, the four of them got a suite style apartment and things worked out better. But the nightmares never faded. She started to sleep with a nightlight, kept her bow close, started drinking before bed... Her friends felt for her, but they had their own lives, their own boyfriends.  They still hadn’t heard the full story of what happened to Inuyasha… They just knew he was gone. They tried to reset her up a couple times with Hojo… But she refused when she knew it was a date-like-thing. She was determined to always wait for Inuyasha to find her. He always found her… He would always come for her…
She could have started screaming because not only did she hear the shower running, but she looked down at herself and she was FUCKING NAKED.  And she was extremely sore down there. FUCK. DAMNIT ALL. UGH. Tears started to form in the corners of her eyes from her own stupidity… Four long years of not ever having a boyfriend, no random make-out sessions or anything… and she lost it on a night she blacked out… Actually, she could kind of visual some of what happened, so not completely blacked out, just some parts were missing… Think! Think how did I let this happen!?!?
She had been out with the girls and their boyfriends. She didn’t have to work, for once, on the weekend in the Emergency room. She usually was always worked weekend shifts with her being so new and willing—because obviously she didn’t have anything else to do. No boyfriend. She avoided home because of the reminders of her past, didn’t want to be alone in her new apartment... An excuse to avoid people in general… But when her friends called her, she reluctantly agreed as she hadn’t been out with them since graduation…basically a full month ago… whoops…
They had bought her shots all evening and kept trying to get her to make a move on Hojo because they knew she was upset about this was year number four without Inuyasha. They were at the newest club down the street from her apartment. They’d made her wear a black pencil skirt and a forest green sleeveless tank, sheer, but she insisted she had a black camisole underneath so no one could see anything inappropriate. She had been nicknamed the prude of the group. She didn’t care though. She didn’t care what anybody thought. She would stay a virgin her whole life if she had to. She would wait for him… Her friends assumed she was just nervous… Pfffft. Don’t get her wrong, she pleasured herself enough at home, but no one excited her. No one sang her that sweet erotic song like the owner of those amber eyes had. Call her prude, nervous about the idea of someone down there, whatever—bottom line was she wasn’t easy. She refused to just sleep with someone who didn’t even appeal to her. Maybe if someone had come along that inspired those feelings… Those wants… But no, no one had. Ever. There was no one who made her feel like that. She was doomed to become the crazy cat lady who fucked herself with her fingers.
But she also reluctantly, refused to give up hope. She could have decided just to more or less poison herself with shot after shot and pray Hojo would finally look okay enough to just ‘bang it out’. But no. Barf. Nope. Sorry, he had been the most boring person she had met. She’d prefer Koga. Koga. Even then, if Koga appeared right there in front of her, she’d still say no. Because it wasn’t him. Still didn’t have that beautiful silver hair that fell to his waist, those sexy little triangles that sat on top of his head, furrowing dark brows, sultry smirk…
After she lost count of shots, she snuck away and paid her tab. She didn’t really remember signing her name or how much she tipped, but that was neither here nor there. She made enough to support herself, her habits, and then some. She dipped out before her friends tried to get her to dance with Hojo. Nothing had ever turned her off less than them dancing together. She’d prefer to dance with her brother. Ok, she admitted, that was kind of crass, but still—that’s what she equated a dance with Hojo with; like her brother trying to make move on her. Barf. Hojo had just become that constant reminder to her how boring her life had become once she returned from the Feudal Era. A reminder of what she really wanted… Oh Gods, she thought she was going to be sick. Nope. Nope. She needed to make it to the apartment.
She walked noisily up the stairs. Staggering around and laughing at herself, she knew she looked like a drunken idiot. The only person who she knew who lived here was Jiro, her across the hall neighbor. She didn’t mind him. He was okay looking. He had black hair, kinda longer than most but wore it in that trending man-bun. He had bright blue eyes. Brighter than Miroku’s. It was weird because he looked similar to her old friend... But he was nice and not at all handsy. He listened to some of her college stories. Listened to her cry. Watched movies with her as she passed out from her drinking too much in an evening. He was nice guy. He never took advantage. But it probably did help she made it clear nothing would EVER happen.
She finally got to the fifth floor (the thought occurred to her why hadn’t she taken the elevator? Oh yea, she couldn’t figure out the buttons hahahaha). And he was standing there. She had to be crazy. It wasn’t him. Demons were gone. They hadn’t been around in ages. She searched, researched, tried to find any clue that they could be around. That he could be around… That they’d just gone into hiding… Nothing… She clearly was delusional at that point. Drunk. Yea, definitely that. She had what… four shots bought for her? No, probably like six…eight? Not including the two drinks she had herself?
But this was the first time she felt like she could actually sense him. His demonic aura… She hadn’t given up all her hopes yet. But she resigned herself and just smiled sadly thinking her mind was playing tricks on her though; it was their four year anniversary of being separated after all.
“Heyyyyy… Why you up so late, Jirooooooo?” She sang drunkenly.
His face changed from sheer awe to confusion. His head titled as she approached him stumbling in her heals. As she watched his ears twitch, wow she had a very active imagination, she tripped and gasped but his arms caught her easily. She giggled and hiccupped turning up to face him.
“Opps, sorry ‘bout that! Probably had like, four too many tonight…I blame the girls though. They bought more than half, said stuff about ‘no pity party’ or sumthin’…” she felt her face heat as his hands didn’t move away nor did he say anything… probably just thought she was being crazy and had been helpless like usual when she was absorbed in her bad influences. She turned away from his chest to the purse in her hands to grab her keys but unfortunately spilled the entire contents onto the floor with only her keys and purse intact.
“Ugh *hiccup*darnnnnnnnn! Jiro, lemme go, I need to pick all this up and climb into bed,” she slurred.
He still didn’t release her and was breathing unsteadily. What had gotten into him? “You’re acting all weird ‘n stuff Jiro, everythin’ ok? I’d ask if you wanna talk but it’s late and I’m pretty sure I’m not gonna remember at this *hiccup* point,” she drowsily turned to face him.
Goddddddddd[AR1] [AR2] . That FACE was still staring back at her with those amber eyes, silver hair, fluffy ears, dark brows, tan skin…
“Uhm… Jiro? I know this sounds kinda crazy… but—you have a different face on ya. For real, I need to go to bed. I’m losin’ my mind.”
“Whose face do I have, Ka-Go-Me?”
Her eyes widen and her breath hitched. She swallowed uneasily. That…that voice… Maybe this was a sign—she should just give into her needs and just fuck this dude already that now took on Inuyasha’s form. For whatever reason, the universe, the Gods, her imagination were finally making her see, hear, smell, and touch “Inuyasha” again… She had refused to entertain those ideas anyway just in case Inuyasha did manage to come along… Well not just because that. The attraction thing was huge. But she hoped if he had lived 500+ years he didn’t wait for her… She just knew his sense of smell would put him off if she fooled around with someone not special to her, but he could probably forgive her for not waiting... Wait—was that why she didn’t find any one attractive? For the off chance he finalllllllllly appeared, he would smell her? What was she saying? Thinking? God, all her thoughts were jumbled. She didn’t need to play counselor to herself right then. Maybe she should’ve just stopped waiting… He was gone… This wasn’t him. No, she couldn’t allow her heart to be shattered again…
“Wh—uhm—” she cleared her throat, blushed having heard her name said like that. It’d been since she started traveling with Inuyasha since her name was pronounced like that. She was beyond flustered. “Ji-Jiro uhm, it’s late, I may be drunk but—but—I’m waiting for someone. If you know what I *hiccup* mean. Go home,” she said flailing her arms towards his apartment.
His eyes softened, “Who are you waiting for?”
He had been acting so weird and clingy! So unusual for him. He would have usually just leave her, let her stumble—he respected her independence. Even though sometimes in the morning she wondered whyyyyyyyy he would have left her in the state she was in. But he remained steadfast—his arms still around her. She figured he could come in for bit… He was always respective… He wouldn’t have tried anything… Grabbing her keys she leaned forward against his chest, resting her head on his shoulder—had he gotten taller?—reaching around him and put them in the door and twisted. Even with heals, she probably would’ve been able to meet his head… He wasn’t that tall… Who knows, she was obliterated. What was she thinking about anyway? His arms slightly increased their pressure around her, and she swore he took a giant whiff of her hair.
“Well come on in; I probably can’t walk anyway without you’re help. The girls thought it’d be ‘sexy’ to wear these disastrous shoes… but I’ll tell you a story Jiro *hiccup*. About the man I fell in love with…that one’s new right? I know I’ve been refusing to share, but I’m probably numb enough to share tonight.”
He bent slightly and picked her up bridal style causing her to shriek a little in startlement and her to wrap her arms around his neck. Wow, his hair was really that long? She wove her fingers through it… Jiro’s hair isn’t this long, there’s no way I’m that creative with my imagination… Nope—nope don’t let your hopes get raised. You’re just crazy. Crazy. Yep. He paused at her ministrations looking down at her as she turned back to face him… Her heart was racing… She swore she saw him eye her lips and lick his briefly but then placed her on the couch gently before turning away. She immediately missed the intimate contact. He returned to the door and picked up all her things from the floor outside putting them back in the bag for her. Dude, he was such a nice guy. She felt bad to burden him with her problems…
He closed the door behind him and stopped midstride having caught an eye of a picture she had by the front door. The picture of her and Inuyasha taking a selfie in the feudal era. Where she was encompassed between his legs smiling radiantly into the camera and he had his handsome cocky smirk on his face. She giggled drawing his attention back towards her.
“That’s the guy you look like right now. Liquor is a cruel bitch like that, I guess. His name is…was… Inuyasha… I met him when I was fifteen… We uh… knew each other for three years. He was in love with someone else, for a while there… but I couldn’t stop how I felt. If anything, the love I had for him just grew stronger. We had so many moments I really thought, ‘he feels the same’… Like one time he made me cold medicine, he had told me he was scared to lose me but that he needed me by his side, different battles, uh, things happened to have those words fall from his stubborn crass mouth, but he’d also give my his haori even if it meant he’d be more vulnerable… Kisses on the cheek…Temple… A couple on the…” she lightly touched her lips remembering the sensation. “I was eighteen when we got separated by time, literally, and I’ve been searching for him since. Today made four years...FOUR. Can you believe that?? But I’m still lookin’. Even though I don’t think I’ll ever find him… I-I…”
He came and sat by her and looked at her worriedly.
“I’m not crazy—not some childish girl lovesick on some crush she had in high school! I love him! It was real! I’ll find him! I’ll prove everyone and even myself wrong! He can’t be gone! He-he can’t…H-he always has come for me…I-I can’t give up on him,” she started crying. Sobbing actually. Hysterically. How embarrassing. God she was pathetic; she’d been so good about keeping her secrets about her broken heart. Her resistance to move on. Her lack of enthusiasm of seeing the people she still had in life. She always just cried and said she didn’t want to talk about it… Jiro never had pried further. But she apparently lost her last shred of dignity and bawled like a child. “You should leave. Please, don’t judge me. Please! I-I can’t lose you as a friend. I lost all my closest friends then too…The ones that mattered. I-I just miss him so much!”
He grabbed her hands from her face and looked into her eyes with those beautiful rich golden eyes…
“Kagome…It is me…I-I’m not Jiro. You aren’t seeing things—it really is me.”
She stared at him disbelievingly. “It-It can’t be…”
“It is though, Kagome. You’re not just seeing things. I’m here! I’m real,” he steered her hands to his ears. Oh God, she swore he started purring as she massaged them.
“It—I—this isn’t possible…”
“I’m sorry it took so long for me to get to you. I tried to find you but the first time I came by you had left for college… I should have just told your mom who I was when I came by, but I didn’t want to distract you from your future or what you wanted… You were still so young and I wanted to give you time to grow still… The next time she said you had gotten a job at a hospital nearby, but you didn’t come by often. She was reluctant to tell me where you live, and I couldn’t blame her for wanting to protect your privacy—but I actually got a call from Jiro before I could actually tell her who I was while I was with her. He was certain it was you. I told her I was a friend of yours and swore everything would make sense after I talked to you… I-I just wanted to make sure you still wanted to see me. To be in my life before I said anything to her, I just had to see you… I came here and I-I found…” he trailed off. This had happened earlier that very day… He had just left her mom’s house and came here. She had unpacked those pictures since she had the time and Jiro came by and had lunch with her. Her mom had called her three times while she was out… and she stupidly ignored all three. He had waited here for her for hours... And found her stumbling up the stairs laughing to herself drunk as fucking skunk. Nope! He wasn’t real! No God was that cruel. He was for sure an illusion.
“No, no, no, no, noooooo….P-Prove it! Prove to me, you are who you say you are then; prove you’re real,” that extra hiccup at the end made her realize how unserious she sounded—but she thought she sounded pretty desperate at least.
He slightly cringed but appeared to be willing to play her little game, “Ok… ask me anything you’d think I wouldn’t be honest about…anything you want…”
“Mk fine I will! *Hiccup* How did we meet?”
He got up and got her a glass of water and returned handing it to her, “You broke the seal on me. The one Kikyo placed…You broke the arrow, and I attacked you for the jewel. The subjugation beads were placed on me and we began to travel together after you shattered the jewel.”
“What about, how did I get back and forth?”
“The stupid fucking well…You came and went to be with your family and for those stupid tests at school…I should’ve smashed that thing when I had the chance before it separated us.”
She blinked… It couldn’t be… There was no way…
“Ki-kyo…” she said brokenly hoping he would know what she was asking.
“Sigh…I know we never really addressed this. Hopefully this will be enough. I loved Kikyo. We both sought each other out on loneliness. The problem was, we didn’t trust each other. She didn’t trust me because of my demonic heritage. She wanted me to become human using the jewel… I hesitated because I wasn’t sure that was something I wanted. But she said as long as the jewel existed, she could only be a shrine maiden. A priestess. She wanted to be ordinary—in order to be a normal woman with a normal life, the jewel had to be used... I agreed, because I was done being alone, and couldn’t take it if she wouldn’t be with me if I was a half-demon… but in the end I didn’t trust her to believe she wouldn’t try to kill me. After all, I was a dirty half-breed. Then I met you; you taught me to trust, work with others, befriend others… care about other people…
“When she was resurrected, I had already started to fall for you. We were beneath that tree in the village when I tried to kiss you and you pushed me away. But with Kikyo back among the living so shortly after that, my duty to avenge her, save her from the person she had become… it was too much. I couldn’t stop myself from falling for you, but I refused to let you know. Because I was stupid, stubborn, afraid you didn’t feel the same. Even once I did hear that you did love me, the idea that anyone I loved died, it drove me away from you… It didn’t stop the little moments between us. I-I couldn’t help it. Knowing you actually did love me… I just—I wanted to wait until it was all over before we could actually figure out what was between us.
“Kikyo will always be my first love; but Kagome, you had always and will always have my heart.” He took her hand and placed it on his chest. Oh Gods… this—this—
“Th-that picture…” she continued. She had to hear more.
“You brought your cell phone back one time and you took pictures with all of us… So that you had something to remember us by just in case…We were awake after the others fell asleep… I asked you for another one to be shot because the other one we had taken before wasn’t good enough. I wanted… I made you believe it was something you wanted, a better picture with just us… We took a couple. The last one I surprised you and kissed you.”
She swallowed. She knew she was going to start crying again. Stupid drunken images. He couldn’t have been real. But it reallllllly seemed like he was. She didn’t normally see him when she was wasted... Even though she really wanted to. She thought it would numb her pain. Make her forget. But there he was—right there in front of her. On her navy couch. Red button-down shirt, grey suit pants, long silver locks uncut, blazing amber eyes… Oh Gods… this wasn’t real… She wouldn’t allow her hopes to be raised. They had been shattered so soooo many times, she couldn’t allow herself to allow the deception in.
“Where did you find me after the final battle?”
“In the jewel…”
“And we…”
He grabbed her face and kissed her softly which made her melt into his body. She finally let herself go. Who cared? No one could or even would blame her. Even if it wasn’t Inuyasha, she had proved her loyalty to him and then some. She climbed into his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck and tried to pull him as close to her as humanly possible. His hands found themselves on her hips. She felt it. They were both hungry. Hot. Aroused. Needy.
He still smelled of pinewood, forest, musk. God, she had butterflies swirling in her stomach, heat spreading to her lower regions. If this was a dream, an illusion, or just a drunken image, she couldn’t have stopped it even if she wanted to. She needed him. Or whatever he was. Right then. Right there. She shifted and started to slowly grind on his hips, moaning all the while she started to unbutton his red shirt... His hands found hers and he pulled away. She whimpered loudly in disappointment.
“Kagome—God—You don’t know what this means to me. Seeing you, finding you again… But—but you’re drunk. You’re not thinking clearly.”
“Don’t care,” she tried to start kissing him again only for him to have kept her still.
“I’m not going to take advantage of you like this. We just found each other again. I—I can’t—”
“Inuyasha—it’s been four years for me, five-hundred-four for you…Just—shut up” she plunged forward and finally was able to recapture his mouth and he seemingly reluctantly resumed kissing her. Her hands started their handy work again until she shoved off his shirt down his fucking ripplin’ muscles. God, he was more built than he had been before. She swore she could have cum just from the sensation of her fingers touching his warm god-like body, or even having kissed him and him kiss her back in such fervor probably only they could have ever knew.
She moaned as she kept rubbing herself against his very present hardened length. Her skirt was basically no longer a skirt as it was so pushed up exposing her heat. She felt bad knowing that his pants probably were just as wet as her panties. If this was a fantasy she had conjured up, whew boy was it an amazing one. But each kiss, each brush of their tongues, each moan, growl, pant had begun to break down her walls to let her start believing it was reality. He was groaning but clearly hadn’t lost himself completely yet. If this was a dream, she wouldn’t have had that! He was going to fully enjoy this just as much as she planned to. It just then it became a plan of how to get him to unwind.
She moved from his lips, which did cause her to whine a bit but kissing her way down his jaw to his shoulder, to his pecks, Godddddddd. She was beyond wet. She was so horny it was unbelievable. She had never felt like that with anyone. She needed him more than she needed air. But he clearly refused to undress her or be an active participant aside from kissing her. Fine; she admitted she was drunk. But she didn’t care. She maybe would have regretted this in the morning, but the alcohol was definitely convincing her to not give a shit right then.  If this truly was Inuyasha, she would have zero regrets… She dropped to the ground between his legs and laughed. Which in turn caused her to hiccup making her only laugh harder.
She turned her eyes back to his face who was flushed but gazed down at her with concern.
“I waited for you, ya know? I couldn’t find anyone who was even half the man you are…I’ve never done…anything…” she trailed off while her hands moved along his thighs which caused his muscles to tighten and forced him to let out a low groan. She reached his button and unbuttoned while she maintained eye contact. She then pulled down the zipper. Slowly. Teasingly. Testing.
“Ka-Kagome—”
“Sh, sh, shhhhh. I’m going to prove this isn’t just about me…Inuyasha…I need this for myself too…Please…” Her skipped a beat when she uttered his name. She tugged down his pants to which he seemed hesitant but still willing complied to her nonverbal commands.
After a long look into his unsure hazy eyes, she turned to look at his twitching hardened cock. This had to be real. Even her imagination couldn’t have made this kind of thing up—the details were so…explicit. Mouthwatering. They made her body burn with excitement. She slowly wrapped her fingers delicately around it and stroked up gently. He jumped and growled. Mmmmm how she missed that sound.
She bent forward and took him in her mouth. His hands shot out to her shoulder and he tried to push her off; but she clenched one hand onto his bare thigh to steady herself and reassure him. Her other remained stroking in time with her taking him as deep as she could in her mouth, covering what she couldn’t contain. Clearly his resolve was weak enough at that point as it kept him from completely over-powering her. Or her fantasy she was stronger. Whatever it was.
He started panting and moved his hands into her hair, but he did not push her down or try to control the speed. It was like he just enjoyed having her tresses in his hands, between his fingers—she didn’t mind either. The sensations only added to her desires. He still rumbled through his gasped breaths, deep from his chest. She felt him twitch in her mouth and his grip tightened as he tried to pull her away but she held firm; she swirled her tongue around the tip, softly grazing him as she would bob up with her teeth and then encase him with her tongue on way the back down. She wanted to know how he tasted or wondered what her imagination would dream up. She was determined to keep going no matter how fucked up she would feel tomorrow. She had to know if in that very moment he was real…
“Kagome—I’m gonna—" She looked up at him and it caused him to hold his breath. His flushed face, tremoring body, God, she started praying to all the Gods she hadn’t spoken to in years that this wasn’t a dream or some drunken made up illusion.
He howled when he released, and she drank him up like she was parched and stuck in the desert, unsure when she would see water again… He was her savior. Her light. Those golden eyes bore into her own chocolate orbs heating her like she was laying on the beach in the middle of summer. She pulled back once she felt him stop pouring into her mouth and remained kneeling.
He grabbed her by her upper arms and drug her back up to him and kissed her hard. His tongue pushed back her lips and she let him taste himself in her mouth. He growled in approval and embraced her hard. He pulled back for them to catch their respective breaths again and locked eyes with her before he kissed her forehead gently.
“Kagome… I-“
“Inuyasha… Please…”
“Grrrr, you’re still the same stubborn wench from five-hundred years ago.”
“Hehehehe, you can say that. Please, I just… I want to believe you’re real… That you’re really here… Please…” she implored stroking her hand on his cheek.
He leaned into her hand sighing. He was still holding back. For whatever he was, real, fake, in between, he was uneasily wavered. Her hand moved subconsciously to his ear where she started kneading it in her finger. He more or less purred (she would never tell him that if he had been real) and kissed her again. She melted in his arms as he picked her up letting her wrap her legs around his bare waist and was carried to the bedroom. She actually didn’t remember that very clearly, she was still in a drunken haze, and only felt she was becoming more intoxicated by that man’s tongue working every angle of her mouth while her own grazed his sharp fangs. Was it possible to get high on this feeling? If so, she was.
He sat her on the bed and moved to unbutton her top but, yet AGAIN, paused. She exhaled irritably and earned a chuckle in addition to the resumption of his fingers delicately unbuttoning her top. She released his shoulders so he could push her top down her arms. She pulled her own camisole over her head and unzipped her skirt letting it fall loosely to her bottom and legs. She sat in just her under garments—lustful eyes set on him. Pleading. Begging for his touch. He slowly cupped her breast which caused a very unexpected sound to escape her own mouth. His mouth moved to her neck and his tongue laved its way to her shoulder.
Her walls were almost broken at that moment. This was a million times better than any fantasy she had dreamed up. She couldn’t have controlled her panting or her withering body at his ministrations even if she had tried to. Her images started to get harder to remember from the night before. Ughhhh noooooo! Keep thinking stupid!!!!
Her bra came off, did she take it off? Or him?
She remembered lifting up her hips for him to pull down her skirt while his mouth suckled on her nipples. That wet hot mouth on her breast made her mewl loudly. She was putty in his hands. Her underwear met an unfortunate fate, while she didn’t see them being removed, she heard a very distinct tear and the sensation of lace went missing…
She had been lying flat on her back as he crawled above her; he took her lips in her gently and lovingly. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and lightly brushed her fingers over his back and then threaded her fingers in long silver hair. He pulled away and started to trail his way back down her body, nipping, licking, kissing, hands brushing against every surface his face passed.
Fire. She was on fire. She was desperate for her release. She had never been so achy in her life. She was brokenly saying his name over and over pleading for him to understand what she wanted when she felt his tongue lick between her folds against her core.
She wailed and locked her hands on his head. Pressing him, if possible, further into her. His pace was torturous. She could tell he was learning her smell and taste all over again. She heard him mumble about how amazing she smelled and he had so many dreams about tasting her—none of which stacked up to that moment.
“Please Inuyasha… Pleaseeeee…”
That was what broke him—he began to set a better, fast rhythm. He used one hand to keep her hips steady (which she hadn’t been aware they were apparently out of control) and the other had started pumping a digit in and out of her. She had already been spoiled. She could never go back to her own fingers. No. Never. They would never stack up.
She was sooooooo close. The coil in belly was pulled tight. She wasn’t even sure if she had been panting or breathless at this point. She remembered trying to buck her hips in time with his fingers (wait, he added some??) but he still held her hips still. But the moment his mouth clamped down on her nub she was gone. Literally and figuratively. That was it.
The shower turned off and she heard the sound a towel being wrapped… She was scared. She figured she might as well check herself into a mental institution… That or AA. She knew she had issues. She shivered in revulsion pulling the cover up to her breasts and closed her eyes when the bathroom door opened in the hallway.
“Kagome?”
Th-that voice… She dared peek and… it really was him. He was standing there, wrapped in a towel hanging from his hips, hair dripping from the shower, concerned eyes on her. She threw the sheet off, stumbled out of bed, and jumped to embrace him. He caught her easily and held her close as she sobbed into his chest brokenly weeping his name. He started to stroke her hair then picked up her and carried her back to the bed. They remained like that for some time until she finally calmed down.
“I-I’m sorry, Kagome.”
“What?” she asked as she lifted her head from his chest.
“I said I’m sorry… I… I took advantage of you…” his ears were flat on his head and he trembled slightly.
“Inuyasha, what do you mean?”
“I let you talk me into going further than I had planned on. I knew you were drunk and I tried to stop, I tried to stop you, but you were so persistent and I—I missed you so much, your scent was driving my instincts wild and—”
“Inuyasha,” she pressed a hand to cup his cheek which he leaned into. “I wasn’t—I didn’t—uhm…honestly I’m embarrassed to say I don’t remember everything from last night. But I know you wouldn’t have taken advantage of me. I actually have never been with anyone before and the fact I was so desperate in the parts I do remember, I’m not surprised I made us have sex,” he opened his mouth but she pressed a finger to it. “Wait, I want to finish. The parts I do remember I know you made me feel alive, for the first time in years. Just like when we traveled together. I’m not sorry last night happened. I love you so much, Inuyasha. I always wanted to be with you. I had been waiting for you, trying to find you since the well closed. I-I just hope… you’d be willing to do it again while I am sober and that I didn’t ruin our chances at that...”
He nipped her finger lightly and she squeaked and pulled it back blushing like mad. “I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but…” she braced herself for him to tell her he regretted last night and that there would be no repeat. She couldn’t have said she would have blamed him. She had been stupid. She shouldn’t have been that drunk. She was seriously going to start a sober streak after today. Hopefully she could win him back…
“We actually didn’t have sex.” She blinked. Twice. Did she hear that right? They…did not? But why was…
“Why don’t you tell me what the last thing you remember, Kagome.”
“Uhm… you-you had just finished, uhm—” she blushed like mad, just remembering what his tongue had made her feel heated her up. She noticed he stiffened beneath her, sniffing the air, and he growled sexily. She tried to swallow but before she could, he had her pinned underneath him, lips pressed to hers hotly. She moaned from the contact and let his tongue enter her mouth while she used hers to reacquaint herself with those fangs. He pulled away and started kissing down her jaw rumbling deep in his chest as she struggled to breathe. Her body was in flames. Clearly, she was always going to burn with him. She was so hot, so needy, she had never wanted anything more than his mouth to go lower. She wanted to jump into the flames with him.
“Let me—refresh—your memory—Ka—Go—Me,” he said brokenly as he kissed all down her chest and took her nipple in his mouth. She mewled, gasped, moaned, she had no control her body or the sounds it produced for him. The alcohol had not been a source of fuel—her body and mind apparently craved him so much that any touch would send her over the edge. But she had zero cares about being so wanton because it seemed like it just egged him on more. She arched herself into his mouth and massaged his ears as he thoroughly refreshed her memory. After each of her breasts for fully loved, bitten, suckled, he continued his quest south. He knelt to the ground between her legs allowing the towel to drop as he gave her a teasing lick. Her hands latched onto his head, entwining her fingers in his hair while she moaned his name.
“Oh Gods, Inuyashaaaaaa!” her hips rocked in rhythm with his tongue, she was aching. Yes, she had this pleasure last night, but at that moment, she knew she would never get enough from him. Ever.
He pushed two fingers into her folds and started pumping in and out of her while the other hand reached up and started to knead her breast. His mouth found purchase on her sensitive nub and she about lost it right there with a desperate cry until he drew back—damnit!!! He’s a fucking tease!!!
“We stopped right after you came last night. You more or less passed out mumbling not to leave you again… Let me tell you something right now, wench…” he started pumping his fingers faster, harder, making her cry from pleasure but still not enough to release for him. “I have no intention of ever letting you out of my life again. We were born for each other, Kagome. I waited five-hundred years for this moment; and I was not going to mark you while you drunk out of your fucking mind. But Gods, did I want to, I’m struggling for control now.”
“Th-Then stop—take me—pleaseeeeee—ahhhhhh! Inu-Inuyasha please!”
“Don’t gotta ask twice,” he smirked his mouth engulfed around her jewel and sucked hard. She came hard crying out loudly, soaking his fingers and the edge of her bed. She didn’t get a moment to recover as he rose to his feet and steered her fully on the mattress then climbed over her. Their mouths locked and her legs swung and wrapped themselves around his hips while her arms swathed his shoulders. He lined himself up at her entrance but paused.
“Inuyashaaaa—” she whined pathetically.
“Do… you do know this is a ‘forever’ kind of thing…right? Demons, we don’t just go and do this with anybody… We either need to sire an heir…or we plan on mating forever. I won’t be able to stop my inner demon if we start Kagome—it has been screaming since last night to take you. Claim you. But—I know as a human, you need to know, that you will watch your friends die. Your family. Time will become almost nonexistent… Are you sure this is what you want? I—I am just so thankful to have you back. I want anything you want.”
“Inuyasha… if I’m with you, I will always be whole. I will never regret this decision. Four years was enough for me to know I could never be without you. I want to be with you… Always,” she reached up to cup his face and pulled him down for a tender kiss.  As their lips were locked, he pushed forward gently. She felt herself slowly being stretched but it felt so amazing to feel this complete, it overrode the slight pain and discomfort. She was so wet, it made it easy for him to slide in. She suspected he was restraining himself to not just shove himself fully in her. Or this felt completely overbearingly amazing. His face was pleasure ridden she couldn’t tell one reason from the other.
He rested his forehead against hers once he was fully sheathed in her. He was likely trying to control himself, but she refused to have any of that. She needed him. All of him. Demon, Human, Half. That wall of disbelief was shattered last night and almost lurked its ugly head back again when she had woken up—she was vulnerable and demanded to be filled by Inuyasha. This was real. He had come for her.
She bucked her hips causing them both to gasp and moan out their pleasure. He took his cue and began slowly driving into her. She met him thrust for thrust—encouraging him to go faster, deeper, harder. He gritted her name through clenched teeth, his fangs elongating. She reassured him by cupping his face then slowly moving her hands to stroke his ears. His growl vibrated her to the core, and he began to plunge in deeper and faster. She could barely keep her eyes open let alone not grasp his ears tightly; before she could have harmed his little furry appendages, she dropped her hands onto his shoulders, stabbing him with her blunt nails, no longer able to match his pace. She was just along for the ride and this was the best roller coaster she had ever rode.
She was mewling, crying out his name and probably a God or two, begging for more. She was so close. So close. She heard him cuss under his breath and opened her eyes see his purple strips present on his cheeks. She felt his claws prick her hips. He had finally lost whatever battle he had within himself. But his amber eyes shined through.
“I-I’m close, Kagome.”
“Me-Me too! Ah! God!”
“When I release, I’m going to mark you. Here—” he dropped his head and licked the junction of her shoulder and neck and pulled back up to make eye contact.
“Okay—Inu-Inuyashaaa, pleaseee…”
“Yea, Kagome? What do you want? What do you neeeed?” he purred.
She couldn’t articulate what she really needed—but she knew what she wanted. She knew one way to finish them both. She looked up to make sure he was watching as she let go of one of his shoulders and dropped her hand to rub her overly stimulated nub. He sucked in a breath and almost closed his eyes, but he looked too entranced to look away. His thrusts became harder and he resumed his previous pace before having paused to tell her about the mark. She cried out his name as her coil snapped, her core seized around him, pulling him in, trying not to let him go, milking him for all he had.
He roared her name as he came pulling her up to his mouth and bit down. She whimpered in pain but didn’t fight him. She wanted this. Craved this closeness. Absorbed his demonic aura into her body happily without hesitation.
He pulled his fangs from her first and swabbed the blood with his tongue then pulled out of her slowly. He released her hips and lowered himself back down to the bed gently next to her. She immediately closed the gap clambering to rest her head on his chest. He chuckled and wrapped his arm around her pulling her body close, leaving his hand on her bottom, stroking it gently.
“So… if we didn’t have sex last night…” she peered up to look him in the eyes. He placed a pillow under him so he was elevated so he could look down into her eyes with ease.
“We didn’t. I would have never take advantage of you when you were that far gone. Marking you and having explain everything after? Yea, if the beads still worked, I would have been sat to Berlin.”
“No, I wouldn’t have been mad, but—why was I sore between my legs when I woke up?”
“You were sore… Oh! I forgot! You wiggled your way out of my hold last night complaining about having to pee and you fell hard straddling the toilet. I came in but you shoed me out… I waited outside the door only to hear you fall in the shower—you’re lucky you didn’t bust your head open.”
“OH… God…” she covered her face with her hands. “Why you would still want me to mate with me after last night?”
“Kagome, when you came up those stairs you reeked of liquor and sadness, all I wanted to do was make the pain stop. Jiro said for the month you’ve lived here all you’ve done is drink yourself to sleep or cry. He said you refused to open-up and he didn’t want to push you in fear you wouldn’t let him learn who you really were. After hearing about your nightmares and everything else, it tore me up to know this was how you had been living… I thought it was best you decide on a future for yourself; I didn’t realize how much you would suffer alone like I had though, and I’m so sorry. I understood why you had been drinking the way you had.”
“Inuyasha, you didn’t know. It’s ok. We’re together now. That’s all that—wait a minute, how do you know Jiro?”
“You really don’t see it?”
“That he kind of looks like Miroku? Yes, I do. But I didn’t…how…I know you’ve lived for hundreds of years… I just have so many questions! What are you doing now? What—what happened from then to… now?”
“The short version is Sesshomaru and I run a technology cooperation together, he’s still Lord of the freaking West, regions are still divided into four. Two jackasses run East and South that I try to refrain from every having to interact with and Koga is head of the North. He mated Ayame, have a giant pack of little nasty flea-bags—” she elbowed him in the chest and he rolled his eyes. “We’re fine now. He’s mated. He actually doesn’t know I have been lookin’ for you. I can’t wait to see his face.”
“But he’s with Ayame now. Why would he be upset?”
“That dumbass wolf, even though he is mated to Ayame and is a loyal mate, has never given up looking for you. He still cared about you. Yes, he has grown to love Ayame and would never abandon her, but he was convinced I let you die… never heard the end of it. All this shit about he would have never allowed that to happen, how I let you down… not that he isn’t a total moron for thinking that but…”
She reached up and cupped his face and he kissed the inside of her palm. She crawled her way to lay on top of him and took his lips with hers. It was slow, loving, patient kiss. She tried to convey all her emotions, gratitude, love, longing, anything she felt to show how there was no anger or grudge she could have held.  Slowly the kiss turned more sensual, not that she was trying to start anything again, but Inuyasha was there, lying beneath her, naked, and she was fairly certain she felt a certain piece of anatomy poking her thighs. His wrapped his arms around her back slowly rubbing up and down until his hands found purchase on her ass and squeezed. He slowly rubbed himself on her and she moaned into his mouth allowing his tongue to reacquaint itself with her taste. She felt herself growing warm again and pulled away slightly gazing into his eyes. He stared back at her with all the love she had ever dreamed he would have for her.
Still breathing raggedly, she pressed as she started using her hips to aid his hands in their little dance of rubbing her core on his length, “What else?”
“Hahaha… you would be a talker… Sess’ and Rin mated when she was eighteen, I—we have three bratty nieces and one asshole nephew.”
She dipped her face to lick his nipple causing his breath to get caught in his throat, “Shippo?”
“Shippo is mated to some fox demon he met at the that stupid inn we went to. They’ve been mated for about three hundred years… Couple kids. Technically our grandkids—adopted—fuck Kagome—” She had bit his neck and started kissing up his jaw to his mouth again.
“I-I know they’re gone… but what about…”
“Miroku and Sango lived long full lives. Eight kids. Lech wasn’t exaggerating about wanting a big family. Kirara actually lives with me for now; she was traveling to each descendant of Miroku and Sango for a while. She still will visit them here and there—but they usually come to visit us because it’s easier that way. Family reunion shit. Ugh,” he grabbed her hips to steady her a bit. She knew she was teasing him, but to be fair, she owed him from keeping her so on edge last night and this morning. “J-Jiro is one of them, probably the closest to their original heirs—the story is passed down in the family and they just refer to me as ‘uncle’. J—God damnit you’re trying to kill me—” her hands were rubbing the base of his ears and she was dipping her wet opening just at the tip of him. She was impressed he was still talking as coherently as he was, but he was speaking extremely fast.
“I’m sorry? You got cut off… what about Jiro?” she smirked with another twist of her hips almost letting him in fully.
“Son of a—if this is the punishment I have to have, I guess I’ll take it,” he smirked back at her as he reached one hand between them and grabbed her mounds, fingers dancing before twisting and pinching her nipple. Her breath caught as he chuckled, “Jiro runs a dojo his family started years ago we helped fund. He technically works for me and we are as close as the monk and I were. He said he saw the pictures we took put up in your apartment yesterday and finally put two and two together—” he moved his over hand and started rubbing her jewel. She moaned and finally couldn’t take anymore torture and pushed back letting him be sheathed within her. He remained still for her to adjust—both panting having endured what seemed like hours of teasing. She finally tested to see what it be like to move forward and push back. HOLY. FUCK. RIGHT. THERE.
He sat up and she immediately grasped his shoulder raising herself up to push herself back down and didn’t expect to feel him thrust up. She gasped and withered from the sensation. She was already almost there. He was so hard she imagined he probably was too. But she didn’t care. She would’ve rode him all day. They had years of catching up to do. She remembered she was off all weekend too and mentally did a happy dance as she bounced up and down literally on his cock.
“Do that again,” he said huskily.
“Wh-what?”
“Touch yourself. I want to feel you,” he whispered into her ear, licking the shell and grabbing the lobe in his teeth.
She didn’t falter her pace and did as she was told. He leaned down and took her nipple in his mouth sucking, nibbling. She froze and crashed down on to him crying her release, trembling, holding onto him as she tried to ground herself. She felt like she was soaring through the skies like they used to do—traveling on his back. Free, carefree, just enjoying the scenery.  Together.
His hands on her hips guided her to lie back as he resumed their previous pace as she came down from her high. His mouth found her mark and re-pierced it with his fangs, sucking hard on her skin.
“Fuck!! INUYASHAAAAA—” she was already restrung ready to snap again when she felt him stiffen and grumble her name as he growled loudly letting himself go causing her to wail as she felt her walls crash down on his length buried within her. He crashed down on top of her, completely spent, head resting on her chest as she languidly brought her arms around him.
She was exhausted. She felt sleep edging its way faster and faster through her consciousness but she wouldn’t allow it to claim her yet. Four years. Over five hundred for him. She needed to be with him. She didn’t want the connection to be broken just yet. She swallowed and softly asked, “How are you here…? I mean, why haven’t I been able to sense any demons? It sounds like there are plenty around here…”
“Mmmmm,” he reached one arm up tilting his head to find the strand of hair his hand began to twirl through. “We have charms. Like the fuyoheki Naraku used. Made it easier to be less noticeable; blend in and have less trouble amounting power. The demon council that had been established knew we couldn’t keep killing humans who would wage war on us, and humans would never fully accept us. We often had to change identities, move to different countries for awhile until people who knew us and would have realized we didn’t age passed, but all in all it hasn’t been too hard to amount wealth and stuff. Make life more comfortable.”
“You never… you never took another mate?”
“Never found one I loved. You were always in my heart Kagome. Don’t be mad, but I did try. I really did because I knew you expect me to; but no one ever came close to how I felt about you. I told you for demons sex is just—different. Even though I am only half, my demon half refused to allow us to go around fucking anyone who gave me any attention. It only desired you. It knew you would be back… My human half recognized that too. My love for you made me refuse to move on…I also felt no need to sire any descendants of my own. I had Shippo. Adopted or not, he is our son.”
“I’m so sorry you spent all these centuries alone… It—it’s all my—” Inuyasha leaned up and took her lips to cut her off.
“Shut up. You won’t let me apologize for making you wait, then you aren’t allowed to blame yourself for being my mate.” She blushed hotly and averted eye contact. “Shippo is probably going shit himself when I tell him I found you.”
“What does he do now?”
“He’s actually a teacher—Chemistry. You know. Has a thing for burning shit and all,” he winked at her causing her to giggle.
Her phone began chirping from the living room. She groaned and patted his shoulder to move. He jumped off the bed after a quick peck to her temple, grabbed the phone and returned to lay by her side instantly. She had to blink to realize he had even actually moved before looking at the caller id. “MOM” it read. She answered, “Hello?”
“Kagome! I’ve been trying to reach you all evening! Are you ok? Your friends said you disappeared at the bar and they weren’t able to reach you either! Jiro didn’t answer his phone and someone has come by looking for you twice at the shrine! He wouldn’t say who he was, only that he was a friend! What is going on??”
“Mom, mom, calm down. I’m ok. I’m great actually.”
“Kagome—you had us so worried! We thought something happened to you!”
“Mom—I’m really fine. I promise. I—”
“Kagome this behavior has to stop! I’ve let it go long enough but—”
Inuyasha grabbed the phone from Kagome, “Mrs. Higurashi?”
“—enough—You! You were at my house yesterday!”
“Yea, I found her.”
“Kagome!!!!”
“Owwwwww—not so loud. Hurts the damn ears.” Kagome grabbed the phone back shaking her head at him and massaged the abused appendage.
“Mom, he is a friend… Well, more than that actually,” Inuyasha snaked the arm his head wasn’t propped up on around her waist.
“What do you mean Kagome? You said you haven’t been seeing anyone since you came back from the Feudal Era! Why didn’t you tell me the truth?”
“Mom, I didn’t lie. He found me. Yesterday. It’s Inuyasha,” he lowered himself to rest his head on her chest again as she stroked his ears.
“Kagome—Are—Are you sure??”
“Doggy ears and all,” she said with a giggle flicking the said appendage making him growl in annoyance.
“Oh my gosh! That’s wonderful news Kagome! So, when will you be getting married and giving me grandchildren? OH! Will they have his ears?!? Are you coming over tonight for dinner still?? Bring him!! I can’t wait to actually see him again without that disguise he was wearing!”
Inuyasha nodded yes to the question on Kagome’s tongue, “Uh—yes, we will be there tonight.”
“Ok my darling, have fun!” she could literally hear the smirk and wink from the phone. “Be safe—no grandchildren until after you’re married!”
“MOTHER!”
“Love you!” she heard a click and held the phone away from her. Completely mortified. Inuyasha snickered in response.
“Keep laughing dog-boy and you won’t have to worry about kids,” looking at her multiple missed calls and texts and quickly responding without being totally forthcoming to her friends.
“Right, as if you could hold out on me—don’t forget who had to be the one to tell you no,” his mouth engulfing her breast.
She sucked in her breath and shifted her hips a little, “Ah! Mk, you’re right.”
“Besides, not to be gross, but I can smell when you’re in heat.”
“That’s not surprising; if anything, it explains why you act the way you would. Extra moody and pushing me to go home because I was ‘bothering’ you,” she smirked realizing it wasn’t actually a lie. “Oh, the girls want to go out again tonight. They want to know who finally ‘met my standards’... But I think I’m gonna pass…”
He rolled his eyes as he trailed kisses up to her collar bone, neck stopping to lave her mark again, then made his way to her lips.
“We should go after dinner with your family,” he breathed on her lips.
“W-We? Y-You wanna go to a club? Really? But—I didn’t think you’d—”
“Keh, I think you forget I’ve lived five-hundred years since we last saw each other. My nieces, while they can kick anyone’s asses, all enjoy that scene. ‘Someone’ said one of us has to watch them. Protective Uncle is better than Asshole Dad. I’ll warn the fucks, Sess would just kill them. Also, not to make you jealous, but enough women I dated wanted to do that kind of shit… But there’s only one person I ever wanted to grind on,” he winked as he came back down to smoother her in kisses as she giggled.
“Uhm… Ok. I guess we can go. I’m sorry in advance if they bring Hojo.”
He laughed, “I’d actually love to kick that scrawny fuck’s ass if he tries anything while I’m there. But,” he started to rub his hands along her body, lingered on her curves and then settled for massaging circles in between her folds, “Why don’t you tell me what you’ve been up to Ka-Go-Me?”
She groaned internally. How could someone invoke such intense feelings out of a person? How could he make her so desperate with barely any effort?? After being fully dated multiple times already.
“College. Sucky roommate. Friends still pushy. Graduated. Nurse,” she informed through each kiss exchanged with their as he teased her.
“Heh, impatient are we?” he smirked down at her as she was already breathless. He leaned closer to her ear and whispered, “Why don’t we go shower together this time and then get breakfast?”
She nodded vigorously and he laughed as he edged off her allowing her to the lead the way…
At dinner, Inuyasha filled her family in on his five-hundred years between when he saw Kagome last to now. He apparently worked for Takashasi Enterprises and was directly under Sesshomaru as the COO. His identity was currently Yashiko Takahashi and went by “Yash”. She recognized the name immediately and was shocked how well-known he had been and she never realized it was him. But he told her that had been the point. He couldn’t risk his younger self ever catching whiff of him and his presence. He was, up until four years ago, opening the new branch of their company in Berlin to avoid them.
He had an apartment near where his work was but also owned properties around the world. He maintained his human disguise originally until Sota and her mother begged to see his ears again. It all had been so surreal… He was really there—eating dinner with them again, holding her hand under the table, he had given her his old haori when they stopped at his place to change before dinner, and she had decided to wear it over her cocktail dress she picked to wear for when they went to the club again. She realized she had never been happier. More complete. As she looked into Inuyasha’s eyes, her mate, her life, she realized the feeling was mutual.

⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Inuyasha's lips moved over Kagome's with an urgency that couldn't be mistaken.
Her mouth opened to him on a needy whine. He growled his approval as his tongue plunged into her mouth, seeking out all the secret recesses within.
'Oh, Kami!' Kagome couldn't think. His hands were everywhere all at once: stroking up her back, along her nape, into her hair, then back down to skim across her waist, pressing her closer once again.
She shivered under his hungry touches, returning them in kind. Her hands travelled up over the firm muscles of his chest, across his broad shoulders, then back and up to fist in his mass of silver-white hair.
Kagome finally tore her lips away when air became a necessity, only to trail a line of hot, wet kisses from Inuyasha's jaw down to his neck. She found the spot where his pulse beat rapidly just beneath the surface. He was always so strong, so powerful. For her to be able to touch him in such a vulnerable place was thrilling. Her tongue snaked out to taste the sensitive skin.
"Kagome…" Inuyasha growled her name in response to the feel of her tongue on his neck. He buried his nose in her hair, drowning in her scent. He could feel himself losing control. He'd wanted her so badly for so long, and now suddenly she was his. His manhood began to throb.
Kagome instinctively ground herself against the stiffness she felt pressing against her stomach. The gravelly way he'd said her name, sent a wave of heat coursing through her body to pool directly at the juncture of her thighs.
The scent of her arousal hit him like a backhand to his senses. He groaned and before he could think better of it, his hands were sliding down her back, each one grabbing its own handful of pert, round ass.
Kagome shuddered and whimpered at the touch, unable to reconcile that it was, in fact, Inuyasha who was kissing her so fiercely. Inuyasha who was cupping her backside so gently, pulling her in to grind against him some more. At night, back home in her room, she'd often dream of him touching her like this, but now…? Now it was really happening.
"Inuyasha," she whispered his name breathlessly. She reached up and cupped his face, pulling him back to look at her. She needed to see him, needed to prove to herself that yes, this was really real.
Inuyasha brought his hands up to place over each of hers on his face. He looked into her chocolate brown eyes then and saw reflected back the same love and lust he was sure his own eyes betrayed.
And the longer he looked, the more he could feel all his fears and worries evaporating: the fear of losing her… his doubts about whether she actually wanted him in the same way he so desperately wanted her… Even his insecurities about whether or not he was even good enough for her when he was just a filthy hanyou… All of it evaporated under the searing truth that shone in her eyes.
This. This was where they both belonged.
He reached one of his hands out and gently stroked her cheek with the pad of his thumb, bringing his lips down slowly for a soft kiss. She was his. His Kagome.
"I– I love you, Kagome. I think… I think maybe I always have." He rested his forehead against hers, a rueful smile playing across his lips.
"You…?" Her eyes widened. To feel his passion for her had been one thing, but to actually hear him say those words…? Her eyes filled with happy tears and a beatific smile spread across her face.
"Inuyasha, I have loved you so much and for so long that there were times I thought I might die from the ache of it."
His gut clenched at her raw confession. "Don't– Don't ever leave me again, Kagome. I don't think I'd survive it if you did. Please? Will you–? Will you stay with me? Will you… I mean, would you consider… maybe… becoming my mate? My– My wife?"
Kagome inhaled sharply before she began laughing and sobbing at the same time. Her eyes swam with tears that gathered faster than they could even fall.
She jumped up, throwing her arms around his neck before squealing with joy.
Inuyasha slicked his ears back against his skull at the noise but smiled a broad and genuine smile against her shoulder as he hugged her tightly.
"So… Uh… I'm gonna take that as a yes?"
"YES! YES! YES! YES!" She was positively giddy.
He laughed then, too. Her joy was infectious. He swung her up in the air, spinning her in a circle, making her squeal even more, before slowly lowering her back down to wrap his arms around her and pull her tightly to him once more. Her nose pressed against the juncture of his neck and shoulder, his nestled deeply in her hair.
They held each other like that for a while, neither wanting the moment to end.
It was Inuyasha who finally spoke first. "So, I should probably be getting ya back to Kaede-baba's place. She's gonna start worrying if we don't show up there soon."
Kagome pouted a bit at his words. "Yeah," she sighed. "But…"
"But?" Inuyasha asked in a tone slightly squeakier than he'd intended.
"Well, I know I have to go back tonight. It would be rude of me not to… But, I mean, since we're…" She sighed, "…going to be married, I mean, would it be okay with you if… maybe… I stay here tomorrow night?"
She averted her gaze, looking downright sheepish, as a deep blush flooded her face. Inuyasha could only stare at her, mouth gaping open like a fish on a hook.
"You mean…?" He didn't want to say what he thought she meant out loud in case his mind was jumping to conclusions… And at that moment his mind was definitely jumping to some very provocative conclusions.
"Well, I mean, where I come from women live with their boyfriends and intended husbands long before they actually get married. It happens all the time. It's normal, and frankly, I've been away from you for long enough. I could give exactly zero fucks about what anyone else might have to say about it."
"Oh, I'm guessing there'll be plenty of village gossips that'll have something to say about that all right. The legendary Shikon Miko living out of wedlock with a hanyou? Heck, us getting married was gonna be shocking enough as it is!"
"Inuyasha, zero fucks, remember?"
"Kami, I love it when you talk dirty." He gave her a quick but heated kiss.
"I don't know if I'll ever get used to that. You kissing me, wanting to be with me, thinking it's sexy when I swear?! It's too much. I think I might just burst right open and die here on the spot!" She covered her face with her hands, shaking her head.
He chucked at her girlish silliness, pulling her in for a hug. Some things would never change and he was more than glad for it.
"Well, whatcha think it's like for me?" He sobered a bit before continuing. "The second I'd finally been able to kiss you, to touch you… The second I was ready to tell you just how much I loved you... you were gone. And I was here all alone with just the memory of you." He shook his head sadly at the thought of it. "Having you really be here. To hold you like this after only having dreams and memories to hold onto for years? How'd you describe it? 'Burst open and die?' Yeah, that about sums it up." He smirked at her then.
She smirked back and swatted him on the arm for throwing her words back at her, but the sadness in his voice had not been lost on her.
"Those three years apart… They were awful for you too, huh?" She asked.
"More than awful. Never leave me again, Kagome. Promise me. Swear to me that you'll never leave me alone again. Not for as long as we live."
She looked him deep in the eyes. She wanted this so badly that she could feel the truth of it right down to her soul. "I swear it, Inuyasha. There's nothing I wish for more in this world than for us to spend the rest of our lives together."
The moment those words escaped her lips was the moment a rolling wave of pink energy flowed out of her, over her skin, encircling her entire body from head to toe. Inuyasha was forced to release her from his embrace, the power pushing him back.
"Inuyasha?" Her voice was edged in fear. Inuyasha could only stare as Kagome was enveloped in a hazy blanket of pink light.
She could feel the power flowing up and over her body, tingling across every one of her nerve endings. Then the tingling became more like a burning, until the power felt like it was searing into every cell in her body.
"Inuyasha!" She screamed in pain.
"Kagome!" Inuyasha tried to again to reach through the barrier surrounding her, but his hand began to sizzle the second he got too close.
He couldn't touch her, he realized in horror as he watched, not knowing what was happening to the woman he loved.
It felt like her cries of pain went on forever but there was nothing he could do about it. "I'm here, Kagome. I'm right here." He tried to reassure her.
"Inuyasha…" she groaned in painful exhaustion as the power finally began receded back into her body. The second it fully dissipated, Kagome's eyes rolled back into her head, and all Inuyasha could do was catch her before she crashed to the floor, unconscious.

Sixteen Weeks and Counting
@inukag-week Highschool AU canon divergence, 7 part/prompt by day story
Parts: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7  Day 3- Haunted
A school science project can be tough enough but for Kagome Higurashi her semester was gearing up to be a hell of a ride when she’s paired up with the class slacker…
“Are you ever gonna let me make it up to you?”  Kagome asks for the third time that period.
“Ugh, give it a rest already,” he grits his teeth trying not to yell in the middle of class, “it’s been almost a week.  I told you it’s not a big deal.”
“To you maybe, but for me it is.”
Groaning, “If I say yes, will you stop bugging me about it?”
“Uh-huh,” Kagome leans in. “Anything you wanna eat, it’s my treat.”
“Okay fine.” Inuyasha scratches his head, “there’s a ramen shop between school and my house, we could go there.”
“Great!  I’ll tell miss she won’t need to drive us today!”
“Fair warning, I eat more than one bowl.”
“I know,” she teases back, “I’ve seen you eat so I brought extra cash.”
“Keh!”  Inuyasha turns back to his lesson.
He couldn’t understand what was happening between them, it was weird how in five weeks this girl had been able to get under his skin… but in a good way.  No one’s even been able to do that before.  Not his family, not his last girlfriend, or any friends for that matter.  Inuyasha peered at Kagome through his periphery.  So easy and unassuming she sat there working on the questions for the day.  He couldn’t help the glimmer of a smile licking at his corners.  ‘My saving grace, huh, I wonder if mom would have liked her too.’  He refocuses on his paper, of course she would have.  Kagome had a lot in common with his mother, a refined, almost regal nature yet feisty enough to put up with a demon.  Inuyasha chuckles in his head.  ‘Okay maybe not refined, but definitely,’he takes one more look, ‘pure.’
The following Wednesday, Kagome catches up to Inuyasha at his locker during lunch break to share some information she found for their project.  As he looks through the papers, Kagome leans in, pointing out things here and there, jabbering about some supplies they’ll need to get for their poster display.  “Or we could do a Powerpoint presentation, it’s either or.”
“I think the Powerpoint makes more sense cause we can add video’s to better illustrate what air pressure is.”
Kagome giggles and pokes at him, “look at you sounding all smart now Inuyasha, who’da thought it.”
“Ha Ha,” he flashes a fanged grin, grabbing her hand and holding it up near his chest, “lazy but smart remember, get it right.”
She giggles again, but before she can retort someone bumps into Inuyasha’s shoulder hard, causing him to take a step back and her hand to be released.  The same person grabs her around the waist and pulls her away from the hanyo.
“Kagome, why are you getting all chummy with this stupid half-breed?  He’s so cursed that both his parents died because of him.”
“Fuck you Koga!” Inuyasha moves to take a swing, but the wolf yokai places the girl between them and he’s forced to stay his hand. He growls and narrows his eyes at the wolf, “Only a loser would use a female as a shield.”
“Tch, I don’t need her,” Koga pushes Kagome aside and squares up, “but maybe I don’t want you to touch me and spread the curse.”  Inuyasha clenches his fists at his sides.  Talking about his mom was always a sore spot and to be called cursed….  “That’s right mutt you should know your place.  A half breed like you ain’t nothing when it comes to…”
“That’s enough!!”
The two men stop and turn to see Kagome with her hands fisted and the most menacing aura surrounding her.  Human’s may not sense it, but these demons could feel the energy surging around her.  Kami the girl was pissed!  She walks straight up to Koga and slaps his face so hard the entire hallway grows silent.  She moves between them, blocking Inuyasha in a protective stance.
“How dare you say those things about him!  Just because his parents are gone doesn’t make him cursed because if it does then add me to the list!  My dad died when I was younger, you gonna say that was my fault?”  Koga is so shocked that someone, even more so a woman had slapped him that he didn’t respond for a second.  “Well?!” Kagome’s hands land on her hips, “you gonna answer me?  Am I cursed too?!”
“This…” Koga clears the shaky tone.  “This is between me and him, it has nothing to do with you.”
“Oh, like hell it doesn’t. You think I’m gonna let some brutish wolf make fun of my friend you got another thing coming.  Now get lost!”
“Tch!”  Koga’s friends, Hakkaku and Ginta start pulling him away.  “This ain’t over!”
Kagome glares at the trio until she could no longer see them.  She was still shaking, she was so furious.  Inuyasha places a hand on her shoulder to get her attention and almost takes a strike to the jaw, ducking and catching her fist instead.  “Kami, Inu I’m sorry!”
He drops her hand, “damn, woman you are scary when you get that angry.  Remind me not to piss you off that badly.”
She flushes red, “well he just made me so angry, i-it just came out.”
“Come on,” he shut’s his locker, grabs their stuff and takes her hand, “let’s get out of this hallway. I need to report this to Sessh.”
“O-Okay.”
Half way to the principal’s office, Kagome stares at their joined hands.  She looks up at Inuyasha’s face and notices the tenseness of his jaw. Does he realize?  Her cheeks growing warm, she averts her eyes to the floor and mumbles, “Um, Inu you can let go of my hand now.”
He lets go immediately. “Oh shit, I didn’t realize!”
“Don’t worry, I kinda figured,” she reassures him.  “But, um, I was wondering, why would he say that about you?  I mean like, is there something about demons I don’t know about?”
“No,” Inuyasha lets out an exhale, “nothing like that.  He’s always had something against me, and I don’t even know why.  But to bring up my mom like that was a low fucking blow.”
When they reach the office, Kagome goes in with Inuyasha so they can fill Sesshomaru in with all the details.  He wasn’t surprised that Koga tried to pick a fight with Inuyasha, but he was taken aback that Kagome was the one who ended it and reassured her that Koga would be pulled in for a discussion since he’d put his hands on her.  Once that was done, Sesshomaru gives them passes back to their classes.
As they are about to part ways Inuyasha stops her.  “Kagome, you know thanks for standing up for me back there and I’m sorry about your dad.”
“You don’t have to thank me Inu,” she smiles.  “I lost him when I was 7 in a car accident.  It was hard but I realized I had to move on, I think that’s what he would have wanted.”
“Yeah…”
She places a hand over his heart, “Inu if you ever wanna talk, I’ll listen.”
For a few moments, the pair stand there, face to face in front of the office.  The look on Kagome’s face, it was so sweet, so serene as her hand stayed its position upon his chest.  His breathing slows, by kami was she always this breathtakingly beautiful? “Y-yeah…” Inuyasha swallows hard, “I’ll remember that.”
“Great!” Kagome bounces on the balls of her feet, “I’ll see ya after school Inu,” waving as she skip’s away, “we can finish talking then.”
“Right!”  But his feet are glued in place.  His hand sweeps over to where he could still feel the warmth of her hand lingering…

Move Your Body || pt. 3

Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
Tumblr media
When Kagome entered the studio the following night at approximately 7 pm, already a little flushed and sweaty from Sango’s hour long session, the first thing Inuyasha noticed that instead of the baggy t-shirt he was half-expecting her to show up in, she’d donned a plain white camisole instead. It was definitely an improvement, since it was clingy and contoured to her figure, though if he were being honest Inuyasha much preferred her in nothing but the spandex shorts and sports bra from before.
And she must have read his thoughts from the way he was eyeing her outfight critically and she stopped to send him a narrowed eyed stare, a clear challenge to just try and make her remove it.
He grumbled but finally gave a nod of approval and instantly she brightened, all smiles and fairly skipping the rest of the way into the room toward where he stood at the table, donned in jersey shorts, a black muscle shirt, and comfortable sneakers.
“Hi,” she chirped, setting her bag on the table and gracing him with a brilliant smile.
Inuyasha cocked a brow at her but couldn’t stop his lips from twitching as he flicked his gaze back to his phone.
“Hey,” he returned. “How was Sango’s class?”
“Great!”
Her enthusiastic response prompted him to once more lift his gaze, wondering what could possibly have her so chipper. Then he watched in something akin to baffled amusement as Kagome dropped into a fighting stance and started punching the air, shifting her feet like a boxer would and then he had to wonder if she’d taken one of Sango’s kick-boxing classes.
“It’s got me pumped!” Kagome continued, striking the air again and again as she duked it out with an invisible opponent. Then she ruined her tough-girl appearance by giggling and Inuyasha had to grin that time.
“You’re a nut,” he told her, shaking his head, and only received more giggles in response. “Alright, smiley, what’s got you so eager and willing for me to work your ass off tonight, huh?”
He crossed his arms and leaned a hip against the table, glad that she seemed so excited, but also genuinely curious for this particular mood. He found that he liked her like this, smiling and laughing and ready to do whatever it takes to meet her goal.
Kagome smiled mysteriously and then shifted her eyes behind him, noting for the first time the cooler that sat at the end of the long table. Making a noise of delight she skipped on over and opened the lid to investigate, pleased to discover that it was filled with ice cold water bottles, various sports drinks, and healthy snacks like fruit and yogurt.
Happily claiming a banana, she let the lid fall close and turned around, humming under her breath as she peeled her treat, dumped the peel in the trash and took a bite. As she munched her eyes connected with Inuyasha’s again and the look he was giving her plainly read “really?”
She blinked, swallowed, and smiled again.
“Who said you can eat my bananas?” he joked and nearly had her choking on her next bite as she tried not to laugh. He hadn’t intended for it to sound at all racy and was glad she hadn’t taken it that way.
“I’m curious, babydoll,” he said after she’d recovered, letting a new snickers escape around mouthfuls. “Not that I mind of course, but seriously, what’s got you so chipper tonight, huh? Or at you just that happy to see me?”
Inuyasha smirked and waggled his brows, to which Kagome rolled her eyes at but was unable to keep from smiling.
“Oh,” she murmured, gaze drifting to the side as she clasped he hands behind in her and rocked back and forth on her feet. “No reason...”
Inuyasha snorted. “Yeah, bullshit. Alright, c’mon, babydoll, ‘fess up. We ain’t got all night, I actually a tentative schedule tonight.” He rolled his hand, an impatient gesture to get on with it, and after another few seconds of staling Kagome cracked.
“Okay, okay,” she gave in with a soft laugh, blue eyes bright and her smile a mile wide. “It could be completely unrelated, but I saw Kamlyn today for the first time since signing up for the competition, and she looked so mad!”
She made a little high-pitched noise of excitement and did a little shimmy that Inuyasha found entirely too adorable. Though amused that the bitch was apparently still pissed about his rejection from yesterday, he derived even more enjoyment from Kagome’s enjoyment. It was such a small thing, and yet she got so much happiness out of it, and the thought that he had, in a roundabout way, caused that happiness caused something warm to bloom in his chest and gradually spread outward.
Before he could act on the strange feeling welling up inside him and do something stupid – like reach out and take her into his arms like he very suddenly wanted to – Kagome stopped bouncing around and faced him fully, and though her smile hadn’t vanished it gentled and her ocean eyes shone with sincere gratitude.
“I know it’s silly, but,” she began, a soft blush coloring her cheeks a gentle rose, “thank you, Inuyasha. And I’m sorry. You know, for...automatically assuming you’d agree to help her.”
She shrugged and looked away, suddenly a little shy and embarrassed, but a gentle touch to her chin brought her gaze back to his and her eyes widened.
“You’re welcome,” he rumbled, the intensity in his eyes making her breath catch. “And don’t worry about it. I said you’d have all my free time, Kagome. And I meant it.”
Then daringly he brushed his thumb across the softness of her bottom lip and watched as her face flamed and those midnight eyes grow very wide. He wasn’t surprised when she ducked away from his touch, bowing her head and taking a step back while avoiding his gaze.
Letting his hand drop, Inuyasha swallowed a sigh and grinned instead, trying to lighten the mood a bit by teasing her, “You just wanted me all to yourself, didn’t you, babydoll?”
His golden eyes gleamed wickedly as Kagome squeaked and then promptly hid her red face in her hands, shaking her head in avid denial.
His grin widened. “Didn’t wanna share me? Jealous?”
“Inuyashaaaaa,” she protested, her face rivaling that of a tomato by now but he could see the smile behind her hands, the way it curled her mouth upward as her shoulders shook in silent laughter.
Chuckling, Inuyasha held his hands up. “Alright, alright,” be conceded and then to spare her any further embarrassment changed the subject. “Do you have your schedule I asked for?”
Grateful for the subject change, she lowered her hands and sent him a small, thankful smile before going over to her bag and digging around inside to retrieve the requested paper. He’d asked for a copy earlier today via text so he’d know when not to bother her during class.
Kagome pulled it from the notebook she’d stashed it in and handed it over, taking a moment to check her phone for anything she might have missed while he looked it over.
“Christ,” Inuyasha muttered after a minute, frowning down at the piece of paper in his hand. “Do you ever have time to eat? Or, you know, breathe?”
She shrugged, her smiling seeming to say, “what can ya do?”
Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at her. “Have you eaten today?”
Kagome blinked at him then smiled. “Um...yes.”
His suspicion mounted. “Banana notwithstanding.”
Kagome thought about it, her gaze drifting to the ceiling.
“...I passed the dining hall and smelled pizza—”
His glare cut her off and wordlessly he pointed to the cooler.
Kagome pouted and crossed her arms. “It’s not that big of a deal, I’m—”
“Now, Kagome.”
“Yes, mom,” Kagome grumbled and did as she was told, stalking past him to once more dig around the cooler and retrieving an apple and another banana.
Unfazed, Inuyasha folded up her schedule and tucked it away into his shorts pocket. Kagome was mulishly nibbling away on an apple and he felt better now that she was getting some food in her stomach after evidently not eating anything all day. Some of his anger diminished and he sighed, raising a clawed hand to thrust through his short hair.
“You can’t skip meals like this, especially when you’re gonna be burning calories like no tomorrow.” He shook his head. “Where the hell is your common sense? You’re going to school to be a nurse, babydoll, you should know this.”
Inuyasha frowned at her, the disapproval clear in his stare, and Kagome swallowed before emitting a sigh and wrinkling her nose, looking appropriately contrite.
“Wednesdays are my busiest days,” she mumbled, making a face. “And I was gonna get something to eat after I was done with Sango’s class, but then I remembered I was supposed to come up here and didn’t have time.”
“Then fucking text me you’re gonna be late and get yourself some dinner, dammit,” he snapped, his concern for her health temporarily making him forget his earlier promise to show some restraint when it came to her. “I don’t care if you’re gonna be a little late if it means you’re taking care of yourself.”
Avoiding his gaze, Kagome shrunk in on herself and picked at the peel of the banana in her hand. Okay, maybe it had been stupid, but he didn’t need to blow up like that. She usually did get food right around this time, but she’d just...been really excited about tonight’s session with him and hadn’t wanted to waste precious minutes getting food.
“I’m sorry,” she said softly, fighting back the ridiculous urge to cry. “I was just...excited to be here. It won’t happen again.”
And just like that, Inuyasha felt like the world’s biggest ass and all anger instantly evaporated to be replaced by guilt. Ahh…fuck. He’d single-handedly ruined her earlier good mood because he’d allowed the nutritionist side of him to freak the hell out and now she was drawing back into her shell, hiding herself and it was his own damn fault. Even with the realization that his concern stemmed from the irrational fear that she was skipping meals because she didn’t want to go back to being chubby, it still didn’t excuse him blowing up at her for something so trivial. And it wasn’t like they were going to do any hard work tonight anyway.
Shit. Now he doubly felt like an ass. Goddammit.
“Kagome...fuck, I’m sorry,” he said and rubbed his forehead, knowing it was weak, but not knowing what else to do. “I didn’t mean to go off like that, I just...”
He sighed, grimaced, and then admitted in a mumble, “I got worried, aright? This sorta thing takes up a lot of energy, y’know, the kind you get from eating, and I don’t wanna see you get sick. Sometimes I can be a colossal ass and I don’t think before I speak and more often than not I end up shoving my foot in my mouth and saying the wrong thing. So...sorry.”
When Kagome didn’t say anything, Inuyasha dared to lift his gaze...and found her staring at him, blue eyes suspiciously bright and a trembling but genuine smile curving her lips upward.
Inuyasha faltered. What the—
“You know,” she began softly and there was a note of mirth to her tone that he did not miss. “You could have stopped after you said sorry the first time.” Her smile widened a tad. “But I appreciate the explanation, Inuyasha. Apology accepted.”
Inuyasha stared at her as incredulity slowly overwhelmed all previous guilt and he simply gaped for a moment, disbelief clear on his face.
Before he could stop himself, he blurted, “Then why the hell didn’t you—”
Kagome giggled and immediately stifled it by biting down on her lip and looking away, a flush riding high on her cheeks.
Realization dawned and he groaned. “You just wanted to see me sweat, didn’t you?”
“Well,” she giggled and cast a sidelong glance at him. “You did kind of deserve it.”
He gave her a deadpan stare. “Touché,” he mumbled and when she giggled again, he sighed and quirked a grin.
“Alright, smartass,” he teased and reached over to grasp her arm and tug her closer. Surprisingly she went willingly, allowing him to snake an arm around her shoulders and squeeze her in a half-hug. She blushed and ducked her head, but he saw her smile.
“After today don’t worry about leaving to get something to eat after you’re done downstairs and then coming here. I’ll buy you dinner every Wednesday, or any other day you don’t have time. Anything you want. And I know I don’t have to,” he told her before she could interrupt and smirked at her pout. “Think of it as my way of making it up to you for being a giant ass. Deal?”
Kagome considered him for a moment, deliberately making him wait – cheeky little thing, wasn’t she? – and then she smiled and suddenly Inuyasha could breathe a little easier.
He breathed an inward sigh of relief. “Good,” he rumbled and then dropped a kiss to the top of her head – why, he had no idea – before releasing her and gesturing to her forgotten fruit.
“Eat up, and then we’ll begin.”
“Is it too late for you to buy me dinner? Because I could really go for some—”
“Kagome.”
She giggled and crunched into her apple.
Rolling his eyes, Inuyasha retaliated to her cheek by snatching her apple and taking a huge bite out of it before handing it back and promptly kneeling at her feet, ignoring her protest gasped protest.
“You thief! Uh, what are you doing?” she asked when he started plucking at the laces of her sneaker and loosening them enough so he could slip it off her foot along with her sock. She squeaked and caught herself on his shoulder with a hand and could only watch in bemusement as he did the same with the other.
“We have a limited amount of time,” Inuyasha replied, tossing her shoe and sock to join the other under the table where they were out of the way. “So I figured it’d be best to get you used it to now as opposed to later so you don’t fall and break an ankle when you use the real thing.”
Kagome shivered when her bare feet met the cool polished wood of the floor and she blinked at him.
“Real thing?”
Straightening, Inuyasha cocked a brow and drawled, “You didn’t think you’d be performing your dance in sneakers, did you?”
Kagome titled her head a little with a slight frown as she tried to understand what he meant, but then it hit her out of nowhere and her eyes widened as a soft gasp escaped her mouth. She blanched and stared at him with something akin to horror, really, really hoping he was joking.
“Oh, no—please tell you don’t mean—”
Inuyasha’s wicked smirk cut her off.
“Heels up, babydoll. Are you comfortable with five inches?”
One hour later...
“Heels up, Kagome!”
“They are up!”
“More than an inch.”
With a groan and a downright dirty look directed Inuyasha’s way, Kagome reluctantly did as she was bade and forced herself higher onto her toes, wincing when her sore feet protested and the pads twinged in pain. She realized it really wasn’t much different than wearing actual heels, but the arches not having any support made it a little more difficult. Plus Kagome had never worn heels in her life, which definitely didn’t make this any easier. Good god, but why did women subject themselves to this torture?! Willingly?!
“Spin.”
Huffing, Kagome spun and managed to keep her heels raised.
“Good. Drop.”
She dropped, balancing on the pads of her feet briefly before shooting back up and automatically throwing her weight backward into a dramatic dip that flung her hair and thrust out her chest.
Inuyasha nodded in approval. “Great, babydoll. Knees bent—good, now slide forward, right foot first—heels up.”
Kagome whined and Inuyasha’s phone lit up with an incoming call, the music automatically pausing to let the call come in.
Big blue eyes looked at him pleadingly and Inuyasha gave in. “Take a break,” he told her, a small grin curving his lips. “You deserve it.”
Instantly Kagome dropped her heels and made a noise of relief before promptly collapsing onto the floor and laying flat on her back, needing to take the pressure off of her aching feet for even a little bit. The polished wood of the floor was cool against her heated skin and she closed her eyes, soaking it in.
Inuyasha gave her an amused glance as he passed her and snatched up his phone, glimpsing the screen before swiping his thumb and holding it to his face.
“Hey, you,” he greeted fondly and tucked the mobile between his head and shoulder before wordlessly reaching down toward Kagome and wiggling his fingers. “What’s up?”
“I love you.”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes and gestured for Kagome to grab his hands when all she did was stare blankly up at him from the floor.
“Whaddaya need, Peach?” His voice was slightly exasperated, already having a good idea what she was calling for.
As Kagome made a sound of protest but reached up to grab his hands anyway, the female voice on the other end of the phone crooned, “I’m so sorry, Sha, but I won’t be able to make it this weekend for the demo. I know I said I’d be there, but Suikotsu’s conference got extended until Sunday and he asked me to stay.”
The pleading note to her voice was clear as day and Inuyasha could picture her face, big brown eyes wide, exaggerated pout, and her nose scrunched up. He never understood how she was able to give him the damn Puppy Pout when she was halfway across the fucking world, but there you have it.
Sighing, Inuyasha gently clasped Kagome’s hands in his own and hauled her upright.
“When’s your flight?” he asked, his tone resigned and dropped his hands to Kagome’s waist before promptly lifting her up and setting her on the table. She made a cute little noise of surprise and blinked curiously at him.
He could hear the smile in her voice as she replied, “Early Monday morning so I should be home around five that evening.”
She paused, then, “Are you sure? I mean, if you really need me to be there you know Sui will understand...”
He had to smile at that. “Nah, don’t worry about it, Peach. I’m sure Kagura won’t mind coming with; you know she loves L.A. and jumps at any chance to gamble away the asshole’s money.”
“What about getting smashed and trying to sell her lingerie? That she was still wearing?”
Inuyasha snorted in acknowledgment, lifting one of Kagome’s feet and carefully massaging the sore muscles with experienced hands. Kagome gasped, flushed, but then hummed in pleasure as her eyes drifted close and a dreamy smile spread across her face. He grinned.
“Thanks, Pooch,” his dear friend said softly, voice ringing with sincerity. “I really do appreciate it, especially since it’s been scheduled for like, two months. Has anyone ever told you you’re like, the best boss ever? And the sexiest?”
“Kiss ass.”
“Well, somebody has to. Your boyfriend’s been kissing mine for the past week, I’m sure yours ain’t getting any action.”
Inuyasha released a bark of laughter, shaking his head at Kagome’s inquisitive head tilt and switching to her other foot; she gave him a weird look but decided to brush it off and closed her eyes again.
“Tell him when he’s done licking peaches, I got all the meat he needs right here.”
The look Kagome gave him after that particular statement had him biting back another laugh and again he shook his head, not without a grin. A soft snort sounded on the other end and then, “Babe, your boyfriend says when you’re done licking peaches, he’s got all the meat you need right here.”
There was a pause and then Inuyasha’s sensitive hearing picked up the hollered reply from a familiar male voice before it was relayed.
“He says, ‘kiss, kiss, bitch.’”
They both shared a laugh at that, the running gag between them being that Inuyasha was having a not so secret affair with her husband and his wife just went along with it “as long as she gets to watch.” The gag never got old, and the couple was included in the limited circle of his closest friends. He was grateful to have them in his life, along with a certain blue-eyed beauty that had the prettiest smile.
“Seriously, Pooch,” she began, the smile audible in her voice. “Thank you. I promise I’ll make it up to you. Start thinking on it and let me know when I get back?”
Inuyasha smiled, about to reply that she didn’t owe him anything, but then paused and flicked his gaze down at the woman sprawled across the table, having given up on understanding their conversation and smiling dreamily.
“Actually, Peach,” he murmured, his mouth kicking up into a fond grin when ocean eyes fluttered open and connected with rich honey. “I already know exactly how you can make it up to me.”

The Importance of Ramen 5
I really wanted to get this chapter done in time for the friendship themed day for Inuvember. Not sure if I’ve missed it or not, I’ve totally lost track. But this chapter is all about friendship. It’s time to stage an emotional intervention, InuCrew style.
The Importance of Ramen  Ch 1  Ch 2  Ch 3  Ch 4
On FanFiction.net if you’d prefer; my name is Daisy73 over there.
Kagome opened her eyes, struggling to focus. Everything looked blurry as she fought her way to consciousness. She could hear the crackle of a fire, the occasional pop of the kindling in the flames a comforting familiar sound. She felt strong hands shifting behind her back, helping her sit up. The room suddenly tilted crazily, and she felt nauseous, sweat breaking out on her forehead. Her lips clenched shut as she felt her stomach roll. After a few moments it settled, and she leaned floppily like a rag doll against the hands and solid warmth behind her. An object appeared in front of her face. Squinting, she struggled to work out what it was, trying to get both her eyes and brain to focus.
“Kagome, you need to drink this.” She vaguely recognised Sango’s voice, although it sounded weird, like she was talking through a hollow tube. Kagome shook her head, trying to focus, and when the ringing buzzed in her ears, she wished she hadn’t.
“Wah?”, Kagome answered incoherently. She blinked her eyes rapidly, nose crinkled in frustration that she couldn’t get the room to stay still.
“Kagome, you need to drink this tea. It’s the one Kaede prescribes to combat the side effects of blood loss.” She felt gentle hands tilting her head and felt the edge of a cup against her lips. She forced herself to swallow the mouthful of warm liquid as it trickled over her tongue. It was so bitter it made her want to retch.
“That’s so gross”, Kagome muttered, shivering in revulsion and poking her tongue out of her mouth repeatedly as if in the hope that it would get rid of the taste.
“I know”, chortled a deep voice behind her. She could feel the rumble of Inuyasha’s contained laughter against her back; she must be leaning up against him. “I always tell you that, and yet you still make me drink it. You gotta learn to take your own medicine Ka-go-me”.
“Bite me, dog-boy”, Kagome grumbled, her eyes screwed tightly shut, still struggling with the mouthfuls of foul liquid that Sango was helping her to swallow. She could hear a chuckling Mirokou somewhere to her left and felt tiny comforting pats on her knee from little hands; at least Shippou wasn’t making fun of her.
“My otousan always said that the worse a medicine tasted, the faster it would cure you. You’ll feel better in no time Kagome”, comforted Shippou. Kagome snorted in amongst her efforts to gulp down the bitter liquid. Her own mother had fed her a similar fib when she was younger to get her to swallow medicine, but she wasn’t about to say anything disparaging about a memory that Shippou chose to share about his father. She did her best to smile in his direction, although it felt more like a grimace.
“Where are we?”, she asked after having finally worried down the last of the disgusting tea.
“After assisting the village head man in the matter of an evil spirit that was lurking in his storehouse”, began Mirokou, ignoring the ‘pfft’ noise coming from Sango’s direction, “he was so kind as to offer us the use of a hut they offer to visiting dignitaries”.
“You’re slipping monk”, teased Inuyasha. “No one’s been in this hut for ages. It reeks of dust and damp. I’d say somebody died in here years ago, and it hasn’t been used since.”
“No matter”, smiled Mirokou. “The use of it is free, the roof has no leaks and is keeping out the storm, and we’ve been able to use the firepit for cooking”. Kagome looked as he gestured towards the flickering fire, where a metal pot hung from chains on a tripod over the flames, its lid rattling gently over the simmering contents within.
“I should probably check the stew”, agreed Sango. She carefully lifted the lid from the pot and all of them sniffed the rich aroma appreciatively, even Kagome. Although her stomach still felt unsettled, the nauseous feeling was rapidly being replaced by a gnawing hunger.
Kagome looked around the small hut. Now that she had been sitting up for a while, she was able to pay more attention to her surroundings. She was sitting in her sleeping bag, with her back resting against Inuyasha’s chest, his longer legs stretched out either side of her. Looking down at her clothes, she realised that she was wearing a fresh clean t-shirt, and the bandage on her upper arm had been changed. Her bottom half seemed dry also, and with a slight flush of mortification, she hoped Sango had been the one to change her clothing. She felt comfortable, even though her wounds still throbbed a bit, especially the one on her thigh. She would have to get up and walk on it soon, so her leg didn’t get stiff. She couldn’t afford to slow everyone down; they needed to get back to the shard hunt tomorrow, especially since… the sudden memory of who they had met in the bamboo forest had her stiffening, and she grabbed Inuyasha’s hand that was resting on his thigh.
“Kagura! Inuyasha, have you…” Her sudden movement made her head thump, and she felt dizzy and sick again.
“Kagome, you need to eat first. You’ll get sick if you don’t”. Inuyasha’s grip on her hand was firm.
“No, no, we need to talk about Kagura; have you told everyone about what she said?!” She could feel her heart rate increasing; they needed to plan. For Kagura to come and warn them about a possible threat from Naraku it must be really bad! She felt a prickling in her scalp and a buzzing noise in her ears, and knowing it was a sign she would possibly pass out, she bent herself forwards, breathing heavily.
“Oi, Kagome, calm down!” Inuyasha’s warm hand on her back was soothing; she could feel Shippou hugging her feet through the sleeping bag. His anxious jittery movements made her realise that she was frightening the little fox kit, so she forced herself to take deep breaths until she felt less wobbly.
“Sorry everyone”, she said more calmly, sitting herself up gradually. “I just suddenly remembered, and it made me freak out a bit.” She bit her lip at the concerned look that passed between Mirokou and Sango. Everyone had enough to worry about without adding her to the list. The whole reason she was pushing her training was so that they didn’t have to worry about her anymore. She sat up straight and plastered a smile on her face. “I’m good now.”
Sango approached Kagome with a tin mug full of thick stew; meat and vegetables flooded with thick gravy. She looked from the mug back up to Sango, and down to the stew again.
“Wow, how long was I asleep?!”
“Coupla hours. Now, eat. I didn’t go hunting rabbits in the rain for you to turn your nose up at it”, Inuyasha rumbled grumpily. He shuffled himself backwards, so he was leaning against the wall of the hut, then pulled on the sleeping bag until he dragged both it and her over to lean on him again. “Eat wench! Or do I have ta get Sango to feed ya like a pup?!”
Sango giggled at Kagome’s disgruntled expression as she served out stew for the rest of them. The little hut was silent for a while, apart from the crackling of the fire and distant rumbling of thunder, as everyone enjoyed their dinner and then had second helpings of the rabbit stew.
Kagome was the last to put down her empty mug with a satisfied sigh. Shippou and Kirara were already asleep, Shippou starfished on a blanket near the dying fire, his small rounded belly rising and falling accompanied by tiny snuffling snores. Kirara was tucked into his side, her twin tails resting primly over her eyes and nose. Mirokou and Sango were exchanging cheerful banter while they tidied the cooking equipment away, and Inuyasha seemed to be happy to stay silent behind her, Tessaiga propped against his shoulder.
Her belly now pleasantly full, Kagome didn’t feel dizzy anymore. In fact, apart from still feeling a little tired and the throbbing of the wound in her thigh, her body was feeling pretty good. What a shame that her brain continued going into overdrive. She hadn’t been awake for the entire conversation between Inuyasha and Kagura; had only woken when she felt him hunch over her and growl protectively. They needed to discuss and analyse what Kagura’s message might mean. Was it a trap? Was Kagura trying to divert their focus from Naraku by hinting at a fictional foe? Or was she trying to be their ally in her own roundabout way. She twisted her hands together in her lap nervously as her thoughts bounced around, the worried look shared between Mirokou, Sango and Inuyasha going totally unnoticed.
Mirokou cleared his throat. “Kagome”, he began carefully, trying to get her attention.
“Mmm?”
“I… that is, we”, he continued as he gestured to include Sango and Inuyasha, “can’t help but notice that lately your mood seems a little…” He faltered as Kagome narrowed her eyes at him, but continued bravely, “tense.”
Kagome snorted. “Ya think?”, she mumbled, eyeing him intently. “In case you hadn’t noticed Mirokou, these are quite stressful times. They don’t call this time period the Sengoku Jidai for nothing.”
Mirokou nodded. “Yes, that is quite true. But, if you’ll forgive me for pointing it out, there seems to have been a definite increase in the intensity of your emotions lately.”
“We’re worried about you Kagome”, added Sango. “Inuyasha said that you haven’t been resting properly when you return to the future to attend school.”
Kagome delivered a swift elbow to the fire rat covered ribs behind her. “Oi!”, Inuyasha protested, grabbing the uninjured arm that delivered the blow, “it’s for your own good, stupid! When you go back to the shrine, whaddya think everyone else does. They stay at Kaede’s and get some sleep and relax. They don’t spend hours and hours training on top of schoolwork and shrine stuff without sleeping!”
“You don’t understand…”
Sango knelt beside her and held Kagome’s twisting fingers gently in her own. “We understand better than you might think Kagome. Do you think I became a taijiya overnight? That Mirokou learned to wield his shakujo and his abilities as a monk without patience and practice. That Inuyasha was born knowing how to deliver a sankon tessou with his claws?”
Kagome’s bottom lip trembled at the kind look on Sango’s face. “But that’s why I have to train harder. I can never catch up. You’re already so good at this, all of you. I just get in the way most of the time. You waste time rescuing me when we should be chasing jewel shards. Demons target me because they can sense I’m the weakest in the group.”
“Bullshit”, growled Inuyasha behind her, dropping his head to rest on top of hers and wrapping an arm around her waist. “That’s crap Kagome, and you know it. Demons target you because you’re the one carrying the fucking jewel shards, no other reason. And who said you needed to catch up. We’ve already talked about this. I said that I would always be around to punch the fuckers first, remember?”
“But what if you’re not?”, whispered Kagome.
“I believe I also said that we could ask Sango for help to give you some pointers on self-defence, if you wanted. That didn’t mean work yourself until you were half dead. Kagome, you’re doing too much. You’re gonna burn out, and then where will we be?”
“Minus a shard detector”, sighed Kagome.
A look of exasperation passed across Mirokou’s usually calm face. “Kagome, I am totally supportive of your will to improve your abilities, but this must stop. You are more than a shard detector to us. You are our comrade, our friend, and it is painful for us to watch you struggling like this.” His face softened. “I sense there is more to this than just a need to be able to defend yourself.”
Kagome looked from Mirokou’s calm smile to Sango’s kind expression. Inuyasha pulled her against him firmly; she could feel his steady heartbeat pulsing against her back. She knew that they weren’t going to leave this alone, that they would keep pushing gently until they got an answer. She looked down at her hands, still clasped within Sango’s.
“I have to improve, to get better, because this whole mess is my fault. I’m the one that shattered the jewel. I’m the one who spilled that evil far and wide. Every time a village gets taken down by a demon with a jewel shard, that’s my fault. Every innocent child that gets killed is my fault. I have to be faster, contain the bloodshed, stop this before more families are broken apart.”
Sango stared at Kagome in dismay, letting go of her hands. “But Kagome, how can you think that? It’s Naraku’s fault!”
Kagome kept her gaze lowered, her brown eyes clouded by tears. “Not all these demons are given shards by Naraku. Not all of it is his fault. I’m the one who brought the stone back to this time. I’m the one who shattered it. It’s my responsibility.” A low growl behind Kagome hardly gave her a warning before she was suddenly spun around by strong hands to look into Inuyasha’s scowling face.
“Wench, did you create the jewel? Did you ask to be reborn with it? Did you make yourself come back 500 years to the past?”
“No, but…”
“Then it’s not your fault stupid.” Inuyasha glared at her in frustration. “Fuck, Kagome, if I’d known that this was the sort of rubbish filling up your head, I would made you talk about this months ago.” He grasped her smaller hands in his, shaking her hands gently at every word to emphasise them. “You need to let this go. It’s not helpin’ you get better, it’s eatin’ you alive. You wanna turn this into a guilt competition, all of us could probably trump you with stuff we’ve done in the past.”
Sango murmured her agreement. “Kagome, the past doesn’t matter now. We need to keep our heads in the present, otherwise we won’t work together well as a team.”
“But if I hadn’t split the jewel…”
Mirokou touched her shoulder to get her attention. “Kagome, let me propose an alternative for you to consider. Imagine if Naraku had retrieved the whole jewel at the beginning, before you met the rest of us, before you had got to know Inuyasha better and began training with Kaede. Naraku would have been unstoppable. The world as we know it would have been covered in darkness already, with countless lives lost. You shattering the jewel, mistake though it was, has given us a real chance of defeating him.”
Sango embraced her shoulders gently. “I could never regret meeting you Kagome. In my heart you are like a younger sister to me. We have been through so much together and are likely to go through much more.”
Kagome burst into tears. Today had just been too much. Sango continued to hug her shoulders, Mirokou patted her back gently, and Inuyasha rubbed his thumbs comfortingly against her hands.
“You are my family”, sobbed Kagome. “Sango, you are like a sister to me too.” She breathed in shakily. “Mirokou, you’re like an older brother, one I need to warn my girl friends about”. She giggled shakily at Sango’s snort of laughter and Mirokou’s mock aggrieved expression at her comment. She smiled tearily at the small pair snoring by the fire. “Shippou is like a baby brother and son combined, Kirara is a friend I can always count on, and Inuyasha, you…” She looked up at the amber eyes, still focused on her with concern. “You… are…” She couldn’t stop the blush that rose in her cheeks, and could only gaze into his eyes, hoping he could guess at what she couldn’t bring herself to say when they had an audience. She watched the colour rise in his own cheeks as he continued to hold her hands and return her meaningful look.
“Yeah, wench. Same”, he replied softly.
Mirokou coughed behind them, and the spell was broken. Inuyasha dropped her hands, tucking his own back in his sleeves, turning his gaze up to the roof of the hut. Sango gave Kagome’s shoulders a conspiratorial squeeze, which Kagome chose to ignore.
After a few moments, Inuyasha looked back at Kagome with a fanged grin, now that she was calmer. “Your mother said as much, ya know. That you were trying so hard because you thought of us as family.”
Kagome sighed. “You already have so much pain to bear, between the three of you. That’s why I didn’t want to add mine to it.”
Sango smiled at her. “Well, now I hope you know better. When you’ve recovered from your injuries, I’m hopeful that you will show me the self defence techniques that you’ve been learning in the future. I am always interested in adding to my range of attack and defence. Perhaps we could spar together, now and then, when we stop for breaks.”
“And if you would permit me, perhaps we could combine our skills to work on building defensive barriers together”, added Mirokou. “Kaede and I have done so in the past, and it makes sense to add this to our abilities in pursuit of Naraku.”
Kagome smiled at both of them, wiping away the tears with her good arm. “You guys are the best”, she beamed at them.
“So ya know what that means, wench.” Kagome turned her face forward to look at Inuyasha, perplexed. “When you go back to the shrine, just do ya schoolwork. We can work on the other stuff while you’re here.”
“What about my archery practice?”
“I’ll just paint a bullseye on Shippou – I’m sure you’ll get faster results practicing on a moving target”. Inuyasha gave her a toothy grin as Kagome swatted him hard on the arm. “Okay, okay, you can practice a bit. But ya gotta promise me you’ll sleep.” His face grew more serious. “I mean it wench; I can get away with it, but humans gotta sleep. You got hurt today, and I don’t want that to happen again because you’re too tired to pay attention.”
“Okay”, she smiled. Kagome yawned, taking herself by surprise. “Are we going to discuss Kagura’s warning?”
“Tomorrow, after you’ve had a good night’s sleep, and I’ve checked your wounds again”, answered Sango. “And after you’ve eaten breakfast and drunk some more tea”, giggling at Kagome’s groan of dismay.
“Don’t wanna”, she pouted, as everyone made ready to get to sleep.
“What’s that thing you say to Souta? Sucks to be you!” chuckled Inuyasha. She glared at him before moving in her sleeping bag, ready to crawl away from him closer to the fire. When his arm pulled gently on her hand, she looked at him in surprise.
“You could stay here, with me.” Kagome looked at him, open mouthed. He flushed, suddenly looking past her, to the fire. “Uh, I mean, you shouldn’t be moving around on that leg. It took Sango a while to get it to stop bleeding when we finally got here, and I don’t want you to feel sick again.” They both chose to ignore Mirokou and Sango snickering in the background.
“Okay”, she agreed with a smile. Inuyasha shifted so that his legs were out straight and helped her snuggle down so her head lay pillowed on his thighs. Her thoughts drifted back to the night she had done the same for him, the first time she had discovered his human night fighting against the spider head demons. The night he had told her that she smelt nice.
“Kagome”, Inuyasha began uncertainly, “do you feel… better… about what was worrying you? About the jewel I mean?”
Kagome sighed. “Yes and no”, she answered. “I still feel responsible for shattering the jewel”, she looked up at Inuyasha’s face as he grunted in annoyance, “but, I feel better about having shared it with everyone. I know we all have different reasons for wanting to defeat Naraku and get rid of the Shikon jewel, but if we all work together, I know we can do it.”
“Alright, go to sleep wench.”
Kagome yawned again and closed her eyes. The storm had died down, and she could hear gentle rain pattering on the thatched roof above. Mirokou poured water on the last embers in the fire pit, and the hut became dark, lit only by faint shafts of moonlight filtering in through the reed mat that covered the doorway.
As she heard Sango and Mirokou’s breathing become more regular as they slipped into sleep, Kagome felt Inuyasha’s clawed fingers carding through her long hair, hesitantly at first, and then as she made no attempt to stop him, more firmly, scratching against her scalp lightly. Kagome smiled blissfully against her hakama covered pillow, rubbing her cheek against the rough fabric. She dared a small kiss to Inuyasha’s thigh before she drifted into sleep, not quite sure if she had imagined Inuyasha’s whisper, “Sweet dreams, my Kagome.”

The Fox and the Hounds (pt 1?!)
My @inusecretsanta for @avannak !! Honestly I had never known about you before, so, nice to meet you fellow Inuyasha (and furthermore, Koga) fan!
The first prompt you had listed was ya bois Inuyasha, Koga, and Shippo interacting together, and that had really excited me, because I’ve actually thought about and really like the idea of these three’s dynamic! To anyone who knows me it might come as a surprise that I didn’t just draw something for your gift, but, well, your prompt that caught my eye inspired an idea for an entire story plot, so, I couldn’t help trying my hand at a fic this time! Unfortunately for me though, I was a bit.. too inspired, so this turned out rather long and like the title says, this is only part 1! Because I’m posting this first half to be in time for the SS, without a deadline anymore I can’t guarantee when the second part will be finished... But I’ve still got the ideas for the scenes of the second half so I am determined to finish it for you! ...Someday XD. Anyway, yeah! I hope you had a very merry Christmas and I hope your 2018 has been awesome so far! Enjoy!~
Rated: K+ for a couple mild-swears in there (GASP I’m breaking out of my shell I guess cOUGH thanks Kat lol) Word Count: 4965 |D Disclaimer: This story is told through the eyes of Shippo, and so the negative descriptions towards Inuyasha and Koga are based on his opinion, not my own. I love... basically all the characters in this great anime! The only character I would ever talk about negatively is Naraku pfff.
It had decidedly been Shippo’s most favorite toy, a truly unique gift from Kagome’s own time, even. The priceless pull-string-operated propeller toy from the future now found its final resting place on the grass, wronged and rendered completely useless, its string having been ripped from the toy’s base. The injustice had occured in a mere matter of seconds, but Shippo had seen the crime committed with his own two eyes. He turned said eyes up accusingly at the culprit standing before him.
Inuyasha blinked, and brought his fist of detached string up to his vision, his mind finally catching up with what had just transpired. “Ah jeez, I pulled too hard on it, huh? Sorry, runt.”
Forcing back tears for the broken trinket, Shippo pouted indignantly at the hanyou, finding that he did not fully believe his clearly facaded innocence. “Inuyasha! Don’t you act surprised! You did this on purpose!!”
Now Inuyasha raised an eyebrow, before squatting down to the young fox-youkai’s level. “An’ why in the hell would I have done this on purpose?” he responded, his face narrowing into an unconvinced look.
“Because,” the boy huffed, “You’re always bullying me! I bet that you got so annoyed at me shooting the toy up near your face, that you decided to take matters into your own hands, and put an end to it!”
Tk! The nerve a’ this kid, coming up with a conspiracy to accuse me—! Didn’t he hear me so graciously apologize?!, Inuyasha thought. It was true that he had been ticked off by Shippo’s antics with the toy earlier, but jeez, what did the kid take him for? A ruthless savage?
(That was exactly what little Shippo took him for, and was currently cursing him as, in the seclusion of his own young mind.)
From Inuyasha’s less-emotionally-charged perspective, what had legitimately taken place was as such:
Only minutes ago, the hanyou had come to fetch Shippo as their traveling group was preparing to trek the unbeaten path again; he had found the fox tyke still incessantly playing with his new toy from Kagome. The boy had looked so focused on the device, however, that Inuyasha had inquired, “Hey Shippo, whatcha up to over here?”
“Ah, Inuyasha! I’m trying to make the spinner go as high into the air as possible! My record is up to that tree branch right there,” Shippo had answered in pure boyish excitement, with a finger pointed upward to a specific tree limb.
“Keh, as high as possible, huh? Give it here, runt.”
From what Inuyasha had seen, Shippo’s teal eyes had lit up in supposed understanding — the elder hanyou’s superior strength could rip on the string so hard, that the spinner would go soaring! — so the boy then eagerly handed the toy to him. Inuyasha’s mouth had lifted into a confident smirk, and he indeed yanked on the string with all his might… forgetting to consider that pulling the string so ruthlessly hard would surely snap it clean off of the toy.
It had been a complete accident, and this twerp knows it! “Keh, some conspiracy ya got there! Didntchya hear me say ‘sorry’ for it, ya pea-brain—”
Both youkais paused their bickering when their sensitive ears picked up familiar footsteps approaching. They turned to see Kagome emerging from the brush, holding an overgrown-branch out of her way as she gingerly navigated through the forest foliage, over to the two boys. “What’s going on over here, Inuyasha, Shippo?” They recognized her tone as her ‘mother-hen’ voice, patiently yet firmly prodding for information. “I heard arguing.”
In a flash, Shippo scampered across the leaf-litter and up into the comfort of Kagome’s arms. He finally allowed the wetness to pool up at the corners of his eyes in order to clearly demonstrate his distress, and cried out his explanation, “Kagome! Inuyasha broke my new toy that you gave to me!!”
Her thin eyebrows furrowed in seriousness as she looked up at the accused. “Inuyasha, is that true?”
Shippo cut back in before Inuyasha could defend himself. “Yeah, it’s true! He even did it on purpose!!”
Kagome turned her gaze back down to the distressed fox-boy in her arms. “Now Shippo, I’m sure that Inuyasha didn’t mean it on purpose. But Inuyasha,” again she switched the focus of her gaze, “did you break it?”
As her chocolate-brown eyes, patient, calm, and yet in the depths of them chastising, were pinned down onto him, Inuyasha found himself hesitating to answer. God, how stupid would he look to her if she learned how carelessly he had accidentally broken a kid’s toy? He could already envision the weird look she would give him! So — as it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks — the hanyou instinctively resorted to the one strategy nailed the hardest into his head: self-preservation. He covertly concealed his fistful of evidence behind his back before releasing the pull-string to drop to the ground. “Keh, of course not! I ain’t that thoughtless! Shippo here broke his own damn toy.”
Shippo’s bleary eyes widened and a small gasp of disbelief escaped his lips. That Inuyasha—! That— that big, stinking jerk, lying like that! How could he do this to me; after breaking my favorite toy, too?! His eyes flickered panickedly to Kagome’s own, staring back down at him. “He—! He’s lying!! He broke my toy, I saw it with my own eyes!”
“Shippo…”
“Y’know what I saw, runt?” Inuyasha said, as he crossed his arms and turned away huffily, “I saw an overly-excited twerp pullin’ on his toy’s string too hard, until it gave out an’ snapped!”
“I wasn’t the one who snapped the string, you’ve got to believe me, Kagome!” Shippo’s eyes pleaded with the girl cradling him; his shimmering tears threatened to pool over and freely flow down his young cheeks.
“Oh, ya didn’t, didya? Didn’t I hear ya say t’ me, ‘I’m trying ta make the spinner go as high in the air as possible’?”
He was being wronged, framed! How could Kagome, ever-wise and perfectly-just, possibly believe such lies from the guilty face of that, dirty scoundrel?! In that moment Shippo put every ounce of his belief into her natural, motherly ability to sniff out lies... And yet her gaze hardened on him. “Shippo… I know you’re upset about your toy, but you really shouldn’t be taking it out on Inuyasha.”
“W-what..?” he squeaked out weakly, not believing what he was hearing.
Kagome tilted her chin upward, closing her eyes as she held up a finger, looking as though she was reciting some line of ancient wisdom, as she said, “Acting like an adult means taking responsibility for your own mistakes.” Inuyasha sniffed arrogantly and turned his face away from Kagome. “Keh, yeah.”
“I’m very disappointed in you, Shippo. I suppose that next time I return home, I’ll have to refrain from buying you another toy, if you’re proven to not be responsible enough for them.”
Shippo’s small head whipped back and forth between the faces of his judge and jury absolute disbelief. But as the reality of Kagome’s statement sunk in, he paused. His protruding bottom lip began to quiver as he bit down on it, until… Shippo finally lost his composure with an explosion of distress, letting out a sharp wail and allowing the tears to fly from his eyeducts. He hopped out of Kagome’s arms and fled from the suffocating scene of utter betrayal, choking out, “It’s not fair, it’s not fair!!”
The two grown teenagers left behind watched after the fleeing boy; Kagome shaking her head with a sigh, and Inuyasha holding his nose in the air pointedly (although, admittedly a twinge of guilt ran through him).
It’s not fair it’s not fair it’s not fair—!!, Shippo’s mind ran out in protest. How could Kagome believe Inuyasha over himself? It was simply because he was a grown-up, while Shippo was a kid, wasn’t it? But that didn’t really count for anything — Shippo knew that, at least! Out of the two of them, he was definitely more mature and trustworthy than that Inuyasha; that rude, ungrateful, two-timer, who didn’t even understand his own feelings! That Inuyasha who had so little control over his temper, that he took it out on sweet, innocent little boys such as himself?! How could Kagome trust a guy like that?! Shippo’s raging mind kept circling back to the same conclusion: It wasn’t fair!
~~~
A calm, crisp night had come and gone, but it had done nothing to quell little Shippo’s fury. His frustration had kept him from a peaceful sleep, rendering the fox-youkai even more irritable, even as he now perched on Sango’s shoulder while their comrades continued their journeying. As the elder teenagers commented on the scenery and joked to pass the time, Shippo was too lost in his aggravated whirlwind of thoughts to pay any attention to them.
Ever since that fateful day when he had first encountered Inuyasha and Kagome in their travels, Inuyasha had harassed and insulted him. He had been the cause of a great many of Shippo’s frustrations, teary outbursts, bumps to the head, and loss of snacks… But this — breaking his new favorite toy, and then not even having the decency to own up to it, consequently getting Shippo in trouble — this had been the last straw! Everything before this had only been meager actions of pettiness meant to mess with him, but now, now that Inuyasha had purposefully, traitorously, gotten him into trouble with Kagome? That was it! There was only one possible response to this, and it rang out clearly: revenge. Sweet, sweet revenge. Obviously Shippo had no other option but to teach Inuyasha a lesson — one that would put an end to his reign of tyranny for good.
But how?
Inuyasha was bigger than him, stronger than him, faster than him, and had keener senses than him — it had always made Shippo an easy target for his brutality, and any time Shippo had made attempts to get back at him in the past, Inuyasha always got the last laugh regardless. He didn’t think he could rely on his fox magic for this mission of grand justice, because his signature tricks and illusions would be a dead giveaway of their conjuror to Inuyasha. No, this time he required some other way to get his revenge — some round-a-bout, discreet way that wouldn’t point a trail back to himself, for a furious Inuyasha to—
His scheming was abruptly interrupted by a sharp, familiar scent having been thrust into his nose by a gust of wind. Shippo inwardly groaned as the rest of the group took notice of the sudden wind and turned around to face its source. As if his mood wasn’t already soured enough, now he had to watch this arrogant, run-through-the-motions display?
“Hey there, Kagome,” said the source of the wind and pungent scent, their ally, Koga.
Shippo didn’t even need to see it in front of him to know that Koga was already up in Kagome’s personal space, snatching up her gentle hands in his rougher ones.
“H-hello, Koga..,” Kagome greeted him back, with just a hint of awkwardness. “What brings you here?”
The wolf-youkai chuckled, the rumbling sound absolutely dripping with cockiness, before he answered, “I need a reason to come see my woman?”
Shippo wrinkled up his nose in distaste. Koga had spared his life once, so, the boy couldn’t find it in himself to hate the guy; but that did not stop him from labeling the wolf-youkai as an arrogant moron. How could he not see that Kagome’s friendliness towards him was nothing special — only her characteristic kindness that she freely offered to everyone? Even that jerk Inuyasha could recognize.. at least some of her feelings! Speaking of which…
Like clockwork, after only a couple of sentences input from Koga, a clawed-hand ripped his hands away from Kagome’s before shoving the youkai away from her. “Hell yeah ya need a reason, there’s no woman of yours here!!”
As the same scene they had witnessed countless times replayed once more, the uninvolved members of the party stood back and searched for a place to sit, where they would wait for the routine cycle to run its course. While Sango found a comfortable place to sit against a log, Shippo hopped off of his seat on her shoulder to make his way over to Kagome. He still held some bitter feelings towards his caretaker for not trusting him on the toy incident, but, they weren’t enough to withhold his instincts to protect who he considered kin from the gruff, pushy Koga. So, while Kagome’s hands were free from that brute’s grasp, Shippo took the opportunity to jump up into her hold, occupying said hands to perhaps rescue them from being stolen up again.
Shippo looked on as Koga’s entire face narrowed in displeasure at Inuyasha’s interruption, a complete opposite of the expression he wore only seconds before. “Tk, you just keep telling yourself that, mutt,” he responded. “But, y’know what, fine — the truth is…” Before anyone could react Koga had zipped past Inuyasha and was standing at Kagome’s side again. In the girl’s arms, Shippo squinted critically up at her assaulter, but it went wholly unnoticed.
Koga continued, “I came across a youkai who was looking for jewel shards, and the bastard had mentioned a pretty girl who held some shards so, naturally I assumed it was speaking of Kagome. I was worried,” he placed gentle hands on her shoulders as he said to her, “You alright? You’re not hurt?”
Again Inuyasha interrupted, “She’s fine, flea-bag; so why dontcha get your filthy mitts offa her and get lost already!”
Shippo silently agreed — as much as he loathed to be agreeing with Inuyasha right now — and he glared even harder up at Koga, frustrated that his subtle plan of keeping his hands off of Kagome had been in vain. Koga shot the indignant hanyou a glare, while Kagome also looked back at him and addressed him, “Inuyasha… Koga’s only asking how I’m doing, there’s no harm in answering him real quick…”
“No harm in—! Hmph, well, what about letting him grab ya like that?! You let him touch ya so much you two might as well be—“
“Inuyasha…”
Here it comes, Shippo thought, the ‘sit’ Inuyasha always earns whenever Koga comes around… But, as Kagome’s warning tone had been enough for Inuyasha to shut his trap before he reached the point of no return, the command surprisingly didn’t come. Kagome softened her gaze as she looked back up at Koga. “Anyways, yes Koga, I’m alright… It’s nothing that I can’t handle,” she answered with an upbeat smile.
Her words did not seem to satisfy him, however. “Nothing that you can't handle..? Kagome…”
“Okay well, maybe I’ve gotten a few scrapes here and there, and lately I’ve been wishing we could take longer breaks,” here she pointed another look back at Inuyasha, “But I’m fine, really.”
Alarm bells went off in Shippo’s head as Koga stepped even closer to Kagome, his form towering over hers creating somewhat of a more intimate moment between them. Indignantly the protective fox-boy in her arms immediately hopped to his feet, and attempted to push the wolf-youkai’s torso away from his caretaker, but to no avail.
“Kagome,” Koga began, “I know that you want to stay with your little pack, but if you ever wish to be taken better care of, I—“
He was cut off, and nearly cut open, by a giant swing of Inuyasha’s Tetsusaiga. The dust kicked up by the massive sword’s impact with the ground gradually began to settle, as the wolf-youkai landed back on his own feet about a yard away, developing an expression of pure rage. His shoulders tensed forward, his clawed hands balled into tight fists, and his whole face narrowed, save for his nostrils flaring. “How dare you interrupt me when I’m having a moment with my woman, you mutt-faced mongrel..,” he half-growled out.
“Keh-! ‘A moment’? Sounded more like a load of bull-crap to me, you mangy wolf!”
Fight, fight, fight! Shippo’s mind chanted impishly. Inuyasha should teach that creep to leave Kagome alone! ..But, at the same time... I wouldn’t mind seeing Koga make Inuyasha suffer a bit... He’s a strong youkai, and can do what I can’t.
However, to everyone’s surprise, Inuyasha turned away from Koga, ignoring the hostile youkai for a moment, to address Kagome’s previous comment. “You’ve been wanting to rest longer? Why didn't’cha speak up about it before?!”
Shippo tilted his head upwards to observe her reaction; she blinked, her eyes widening. “Um, because... I thought you wouldn’t want to hear it..?”
“Dammit Kagome, I’ve noticed ya acting more sluggish lately… Don’t think that I’ll take any complainin’ from ya, but jeez, if it’s necessary... You’ve gotta take care of yourself!”
Somehow her eyelids and eyebrows simultaneously raised even further in astonishment, as a hint of a blush crept into her cheeks. “Inuyasha…”
Sudden movement caught Shippo’s attention to witness Inuyasha, seemingly in embarrassment, whip his face away from Kagome’s view. “W-Well, ya ain’t of any use to me dead — Not any of ya!” he awkwardly recovered.
A new voice chimed in, “Well, my neck has been bothering me quite a bit lately…”
“Shut up, Miroku!!”
Meanwhile, Shippo and Koga appeared to be the only ones who were untouched by Inuyasha’s rough admittance of care for his companions. Telling us to take care of ourselves… Pretending to care about our health… The number of blows to the head he’s given me himself are countless — I bet he’s knocked off a few years of my life, even!
The group was reminded of a certain enraged wolf-youkai’s presence when he began to let out a low growl, his eyebrow twitching at being ignored. “Hey,” he interrupted the interruption, “Well as much as I’d love to rip you apart, you half-breed scum, I don’t have time to wait for you to decide whether you’re brave enough to come at me or not.” Koga cockily played it off, as always, as if he was the one championing a victory over the day.
Inuyasha rolled his head back with pure exasperated irritation, before he turned back to face the wolf-youkai, his fingers re-clenching the handle of his Tetsusaiga. “Then get outta here already, nothing’s stopping ya.”
Koga’s nostrils flared as he sharply took in an infuriated breath, tensing up his entire body for a moment — before releasing the breath and relaxing, straightening up his back. His blue eyes flickered to Kagome and a look of remorse flashed across his features, most likely as he calculated that he could not get to her with Inuyasha standing protectively right in the way. He leaned outwards to view her whole face past Inuyasha’s form, and waved a hand as he said to her, “I don’t want to stir up trouble in front of you, Kagome, so I’ll be going now.” He winked at her. “See ya.”
With a roll of his eyes, Shippo thought, Doesn’t want to stir up trouble in front of Kagome? The moron stirs up trouble just by coming around to see her! He stuck out his tongue in distaste, as he looked up at Kagome’s face to judge her own reaction. She smiled, and the fox-boy recognized it as a purely polite one, as she waved back, “Take care, Koga.”
Fully expecting Koga to immediately turn tail and stir up a whirlwind with his departure, Shippo shielded his face, before realizing that the wolf-youkai wasn’t finished yet. With a displeased growl he turned his sour gaze back to Inuyasha, and added, “You’ll regret coming between me and my woman you low-life… I can only hope you get what’s coming to you.”
With a start, Shippo’s ear twitched as he understood the truly icy tone of Koga’s voice: revenge, a craving for it. As the elder youkai sped away into the distance, it was then that Shippo had the epiphany — he and Koga were in the same boat. Though Koga and Inuyasha were so alike in their rude, brutish ways, Koga was equally as frustrated with the hanyou as Shippo was, and equally as unable to do something about it without facing repercussions. However, there was one advantage Koga possessed that Shippo did not, and that was being a youkai of Inuyasha’s  stature, a youkai evenly matched against Inuyasha. He could perform some of the more elaborate pranks that Shippo had conceptualized in his impish-mentality; perhaps… Koga could be the indirect route that he required for truly-successful revenge on Inuyasha.
~~~
As the hours lazily dragged on, the conspirator anxiously anticipated the dark veil of nighttime to begin on his scheme of revenge. While his comrades would fall prey to their weariness and dream away, he would leave behind a false clone of himself to further avoid suspicion as he would, in actuality, be sneaking off to track down the wolf-youkai leader — the sole candidate for the position of a worthy partner-in-crime.
Staying awake through the night had proven much more testing than Shippo had initially thought, but having taken a nap earlier in the afternoon hours, he had managed to pull through. All had gone to plan; Inuyasha had no detection of his suspicious activeness in the night, and the cunning fox-youkai was now floating high over the forest terrain in his not-so-inconspicuous ballon-form, as he strained his nose to track a scent.
Being an animalistic youkai, he did possess a heightened sense of smell, but even so it was untrained and not even fully developed; it was nowhere near the level of tracking capability that youkais like Inuyasha and Koga utilized. He had barely managed to pick up the latter-youkai’s scent on the cool night air, but now the boy was finding difficulty in following the faint trail. However, unlike those canine-youkais who relied so heavily on their keen noses alone, Shippo thought to apply his perceptiveness to other methods of tracking, in order to compensate for his mediocre sense of smell. His teal eyes scanned through the darkness for trees shaken up by Koga’s whirlwind; his sharpened ears were at attention for—
Wolf howls, carrying clearly through the silent nighttime air, as if on cue. Shippo drifted in the vague direction of the echoing noise, and after a moment began to doubt his trajectory; until thankfully another howl was let loose, allowing him to pinpoint the exact location of its source. The obnoxious-looking balloon descended right above the spot, and with an unnatural pop!, transformed back into a young boy who landed on a branch of the forest’s canopy. He hopped down the layers of branches similarly to a squirrel, heading for a better view point to watch for the wolves’ alpha. He could only reveal himself if Koga was around, otherwise, his wolves probably wouldn’t hesitate to eat the young fox!
A secure branch both a couple of feet away and a couple of feet above the wolves’ heads seemed satisfactory, so there Shippo perched and began to peer out over the wolfpack. Wolves, wolves, and, more wolves... Huh. No wolf-youkais to be seen, only ordinary wolves… Could this just be a regular wolfpack that I tracked...?! In exasperation he let out a sigh of defeat, and flopped back against the tree trunk that his branch was attached to. A couple of the nearest wolves’ ears flicked towards his direction, but Shippo decided that he was at a safe enough height to have no reason to worry if they noticed his presence anymore.
Or, so he thought.
Before his brain could even process the occurrence, something had snatched him up by the tail and dragged him off the security of his branch. The boy’s eyes shot wide open with terror as he dangled precariously over the menacing hoard of wolves, thinking to himself, This is it, this is it—! This had all been a terrible idea — why did I think to go off on my own?!
“Well, well, what‘ve we got here?” a roguish voice spoke, and it was then that Shippo realized that his tail was firmly grasped in a large hand, not a snout of glistening fangs. He craned his head upwards to see the face of his assailant: Koga himself.
His intimidatingly-sharp eyes were gleaming in the moonlight and his fanged-smile was twisted up into a sardonic grin; with a shudder, Shippo recognized it as the trademark expression of a bloodthirsty killer. He had never seen the wolf-youkai make such an expression; even back when he and Kagome had first met Koga on not-so-friendly terms, when he had thrown the boy to his wolves, he had only sported a look of indifference. Now, Shippo was seeing that Koga wore it well, as if he wore it often… I thought Koga had been changed by Kagome, I thought he was our ally and wouldn’t harm me — is all the ‘ally’ shtick just for appearances, to look good in front of Kagome?! Curse him! Curse him, he’s even worse than Inuyasha! He never truly changed — I put my trust in him and now I only see him for what he truly is: evil! Evil, evil, evi—!
Shippo was so shaken by his enraged thoughts that he didn’t notice the wolf’s features shift from menacing to questioning. “Wait… Aren’t ya that little fox tyke that Kagome’s taken in?”
Said fox tyke’s scornful eyebrows shot up as he recognized a possible hook to escape from this peril. “Yeah! Yeah, I am! So you better not eat me, or else Kagome will never—!“
Koga’s fierce gaze softened, more to one of... friendliness? Yes, a sense of carefree friendliness and amusement twinkled in his sharp blue eyes, as his eyebrows relaxed to their typical cocky posture. He held up his free hand as a signal for his wolves to back down, before gently setting Shippo back upright on a nearby rock and squatting down to look him in the eye. “Well, if my woman’s taken ya in, then I’ve taken ya in,” Koga said decisively.
Okay, maybe Shippo had let the blood get to his head, and all that he had previously thought only moments ago about Koga being pure evil, was actually null and void.
“What brings you out here all alone, and at night, kid? From what I can smell, Kagome’s quite a ways away.”
Shippo breathed out a sigh of relief that he was correct in his original assumptions of Koga. “I was looking for you,” he started.
Koga raised an eyebrow. “Eh? Why, what can I do for ya?”
The fox-boy planted his hands on his knees and leaned forward conspiritively, with a sneer. “3 words: Revenge on Inuyasha.”
Now both of the wolf-youkai’s eyebrows raised... before furrowing in suspicion. “What? You’re all friends, arentcha? Is this... some kind of trick?”
“A trick? No, no no!” Shippo exclaimed and frantically waved his hands for emphasis. “All of us are friends — all of us, except for me and Inuyasha. You see, that uptight brute is always bullying me; he steals my food, insults my courage, and beats me up!! Does that sound like a friend to you?”
He actually gave it a moment of thought. “...No, I suppose it doesn’t.”
(Somewhere behind him, Ginta and Hakkaku’s faces simultaneously darken, drilling holes into the back of Koga’s head as they think, Those are exactly the things he does to us!!)
“So, ya wanna get back at Inutrasha, and you want my help for it? What do you want me to do, kid, beat him up for ya? Believe me, I’d’ve done that on my own a long time ago; but unfortunately I don’t think Kagome would appreciate that very much…”
“I already assumed you’d think as such,” the young fox replied, as he folded his arms within his loose sleeves sagely. “I can’t just use my tricks and beat him up either, he always knows it’s me and will just hurt me all over again! That’s why,” he concluded, “we should work together.”
“Work together?” Koga echoed.
“Yes. With my vast knowledge of trickery and Inuyasha himself, combined with your grown-up size and strength, together we can teach him a real lesson, and without getting in trouble for it!”
“Hmm,” Koga squinted seriously at the scheming fox-youkai. “That does sound tempting… But, what if I decide that my time is better spent hunting down Naraku, the despicable bastard that he is?”
“You yourself said it earlier: you hope Inuyasha gets what’s coming to him — This is what’s coming to him! But he won’t ever get it, not without your help!”
Although not phrased in the most eloquently compelling way, little Shippo’s meaning rang true in Koga’s ears. Pondering over the matter, he recalled that the whiff of Naraku’s scent that he and his wolves had been chasing had gone stale this morning... Perhaps his loyal companions could use a day-or-so’s respite. “Alright, you got yourself a deal, kid.”
Shippo’s harsh conniving grin softened into a genuine, beaming smile up at the wolf-youkai leader, as he henceforth decided that he preferred this gruff canine over the one he traveled with anyday. His so-called-friend Inuyasha never took his brilliant, cunning ideas seriously! Koga flashed the young fox a friendly smirk in return, before he stood back up to his full height and extended an elbow out to him, wordlessly offering a perch for the smaller youkai. Shippo graciously accepted the affable action with an effortless leap up onto the wolf’s shoulder.
Koga and his wolfpack began navigating through the trees once more as he continued, “So, what’s our first move?”
TO BE CONTINUED...
Further disclaimer: I am aware that Inuyasha ignoring Koga for a moment and not immediately going after his throat might be a bit out of character, but, I needed Inuyasha to have some sort of ‘win’ to get Koga frustrated enough to say what he did about ‘getting whats coming to him’.
And also, I saw that another of your prompts avannak was Inuyasha and Shippo having brotherly/fatherly bonding, so, don’t worry, it doesn’t end here with such negativity from Shippo towards Inuyasha! Brothers fight sometimes, and kids tend to over-exaggerate things, right? ;D hahaha

The Things You Said
"I'm sorry."
"Would you quit apologizin' already?"
"... sorry."
An irritated sigh. "Just forget about it, Kagome."
Her fingers were interlacing and then separating in a repetitive fidget. Her posture was all contrite awkwardness.
"It's just," she said, eyes cast down, "I really didn't mean it."
Inuyasha heaved another sigh. He didn't turn his head, his gaze seemingly fixed on the path to the village, but he watched her from the corner of his eye. "I've heard."
"I was grumpy about my exam results and—"
"I know."
"—I haven't been sleeping much lately because of that stupid test—trying to cram for it and all—"
"I know."
"—and you came to get me right after I found out I wouldn't be allowed to take a makeup test, and my grades have already gotten so low, and—"
He made a growling sound of impatience in his throat. "Fuck, I get it. Would you drop it?"
"—I just didn't realize how stressed out I was until I let it get the better of me, and I know none of this excuses the things I said, but I just want you to know it wasn't about you at all, it was my own stupid issues getting to me, and I'm really really really sorry, okay?"
There was a pause, in which she seemed to be catching her breath. Inuyasha kept looking ahead.
When he continued to say nothing, she ventured meekly, "Um, so...?"
He snorted. "Like I said, forget it already. Your yapping is way more annoying than the shit you're apologizing for."
She frowned, her hands still at their anxious fidget. "I... I really don't think you're a nuisance."
"Uh huh."
"And you have to know I didn't mean it when I said I wished I'd never fallen down the well."
His left ear flicked once.
"You know I'm glad that I met you... right?"
He snorted again.
"... because I am. Really glad. You know that... right Inuyasha?"
"All I know is that I'm hella tired of hearing about this."
There was a pause. Then the tiniest noise—like a strangled sigh—sounded from her throat, so small he would have missed it were he human. But he wasn't.
And he descended on it like a hawk on a wounded mouse.
"What was that, Ka-go-me?" He let his lip curl up in a sneer. "Didn't hear ya."
Her hands dropped to her sides, fingers stiff now, and she turned her face away. "Nothing."
"Hn," he said. "Interesting. 'Cuz it sounded like someone being a hypocrite. Must'a imagined it."
Her head whipped back around as her jaw dropped open. "What?!"
"Yeah, you're so sorry – until I'm not groveling at your feet like an apology from you is a gift from the gods. Then it's back to being my fault, huh?"
"I—you—how could—" She couldn't seem to find words appropriate enough to express her outrage. Her brows lowered over stormy grey eyes that blazed at him. "That's not it at all, you jerk!"
"Oh yeah? So you don't care more about making yourself feel better with these bullshit apologies? Sure seems like it to me."
She actually stopped walking, staring at him open-mouthed for a moment before that sound in her throat was back, only much louder and far more aggravated. "I can't believe you!"
"Right back at'cha, bitch."
Her eyes narrowed, gleaming like steel. "Just what is your problem?"
"Your bullshit apologies are my problem."
She made a pathetic human version of a growl. "I've been trying and trying to talk to you about this, and you keep snarling and blowing me off and pretending you aren't bothered when you obviously are! And now you're accusing me of insincerity?! That's rich, Inuyasha, even for you!"
He'd stopped walking when she had. Now, one eyebrow arching, he very deliberately stepped into her space. "Let's get one thing straight," he growled, squaring his shoulders and lifting his chin. "I ain't bothered. I don't give a shit about what you said, or what you think. And I especially don't give a rat's ass what you think about me. Got that?"
If she was intimidated by his height or aggressive stance—he was over a head taller than her, and standing so close that she was entirely in his shadow—she didn't show it. She simply rose up onto her tip toes and, never breaking eye contact, poked an index finger into his chest. "You're a lot of things, Inuyasha, but a good liar isn't one of them." He sputtered for a moment, swatting her finger away from his chest, but she ignored him and continued, "I know what I said bothered you. It would have bothered me too! It was mean, and uncalled for, and I'm sorry! And," she said loudly, cutting him off as he opened his mouth to say something scathing, "if you really want to know what I think of you, I'll tell you!"
He had inhaled sharply, gathering the air to tell her exactly where she could shove her "I knows"—but at her words, he stilled. He felt a quick and unwelcome stab of alarm.
He'd be better off never knowing what she really thought of him. The half-breed. The nuisance.
And yet he couldn't make himself bite out the "hell no" that was just on the tip of his tongue. As much as he didn't want to know—the things she'd said in the heat of anger like barbs digging into his brain—he also needed to know.
Slowly releasing the breath he'd been holding, he considered her. Though the scowl never left his face, it lost much of its hostility as he stared, expression morphing from a snarl to a clear, questioning 'Well?'
Her grey eyes were intent on his when she took a deep breath and said, "I think you are the most stubborn, hot-tempered, rude, defensive, impulsive person I've ever met, and half the time you drive me completely crazy!"
His alarm was quickly souring into chagrin, a knot forming in the pit of his stomach. Forcing a "Keh!" past his lips, he closed his eyes and started turning his head away. A gentle but firm tug on his hair had his eyes popping back open, gaze returning to hers.
She surprised the hell out of him when she smiled, wide and radiant. "But you're also the most reliable person I've ever met—I know without question that I can always count on you. Once you set your mind to do something, it'll definitely get done, heaven help whatever's in the way." The hand tugging on his hair gentled, fingertips beginning to stroke through silver strands instead of pulling on them. A soft caress.
"And you're the bravest person I've ever met," she said, "sometimes so brave it frightens me. There's no challenge you won't take on. I admire you for that, but I also worry for you."
The hand stroking his hair moved, palm smoothing over and then resting flat against the center of his chest. He was more stunned by that simple touch than by any demon attack. His heart rate kicked up, and he absently wondered if she could feel it.
The faintest pink tinted her cheeks when she continued, "And as much as you try to pretend otherwise, you're one of the kindest people I've ever met. You risk your life for others all the time. You help people even when it would be so much easier not to." Her smile turned vaguely sad. "And you're honorable. You try to do what's right even when it's hard."
Her other hand rose to join the first, resting against his chest in a barely-there pressure. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "Truth is, you drive me crazy in a lot of ways, but..." the blush in her cheeks brightened, "mostly in the good way."
His heart damn near stopped, then gave a series of hard thumps. He swallowed convulsively.
He could tell by both her steadily-deepening blush and the way she kept nervously wetting her lips that she was embarrassed; but she never stopped looking away from him, gaze serious and steady.
"I really am sorry, Inuyasha. Will you accept my apology?"
Faced with her raw sincerity, it was impossible to find words to respond. He struggled for a moment, tongue feeling heavy in his mouth. Then he sighed and slightly turned his head—anything to give him a reprieve from those eyes—one clawed finger rising to scratch nervously at his temple.
"Erm,” he mumbled. "Yeah. Uh. Sure. I guess." A pause, followed by a cleared throat. He peeked at her from the corner of his eye. "If... if that's what you really think then... why'd you say that stuff back there?"
She surprised him again when she glanced away, her fingers beginning to fiddle with the cloth of his suikan.
Now she really looked embarrassed. That got his full attention.
"Kagome?" he prompted after a long stretch of silence.
"Oh, well," she stammered, eyes flitting between his face and his chest, clearly no longer able to maintain her previous eye contact. "It's like I said before. I was really stressed and I just... took it out on you. That, and... I had sort of hoped..."
She fell silent. Her hesitance seemed telling, but he wasn't sure of what.
Damn him if he didn't want to find out.
Before he could think better of it, he gripped her hands—still resting against his chest—with both of his, and dropped his head so that his eyes were more level with hers. "You hoped...?"
Her eyes darted to his, then down to where his hands held hers, then slowly drifted back up.
"I, um..." Her whole face was reddening, but at least she could look at him again. "When you came to my time, I had hoped that... you were there to see me. You know, just because. So when you said you'd come to bring me back for shard hunting, I..."
She didn't finish, but she didn't need to. The cogs had started turning and he could figure out the rest.
She'd gotten so mad because she was disappointed. She'd missed him.
She'd wanted to see him.
Him. The half-breed.
He didn't realize he was grinning until her lips formed a pouting moue and she grumbled, "Jeez, Inuyasha, it's not that big of a deal."
His grin widened until a fang poked out over his lip. "You know," he said, stepping in even closer, "you keep getting redder and you might burst into flame."
"Inuyasha!"
She tried to pull her hands away, but he held on. Tugged her a little closer, until her forearms rested against his chest too.
"So you missed me, huh?"
Her pout was part glower by now. She pressed her lips together tight, refusing to speak.
He snickered. "Too late to take it back now."
"Watch me, dog-boy."
Slowly, gauging her reaction, he dropped his head until his forehead pressed against hers. Her hair, soft and sweet-smelling, floated against one of his cheeks. He heard her heart beating rapidly. Her fingers clutched his suikan and her hands, held so tightly in his, were warm.
He closed his eyes. Savored.
"Kagome?"
"Yeah?"
"... you drive me crazy, too."
A/N: Look, I just wanted to write Inuyasha and Kagome fighting and then making up, okay? It’s my favorite.
I’ve been rereading parts of the manga, and it struck me that Inuyasha is actually very sensitive to what Kagome says. Like, as much as he tries to act gruff and tough, a single word from her can take him down when a horde of demons couldn’t. (Example 1, example 2.) That’s basically what inspired this sappy mess.
