Apparently discord has me in ramble mode today, but given how often I talk about how I love the complexity of the Rift, I figured I'd bring it here too.

We all have kneejerk moments and blind spots and overreactions. It's a very normal part of being alive. It also means that two people with good intentions can absolutely hurt each other without meaning to - conflicting traumas, conflicting needs, conflicting expectations, lack of understanding can cause something to blow up.

I felt that from my very first work - "You hide things so you don’t lose people. I run from people who hide things." - and it still is critical to most of my writing. They both screwed up in some very understandable ways.

And ultimately... when people forgive each other, it doesn't happen in a rational way.

Certainly, it helps when someone apologizes or makes a gesture of good will. It helps to figure out why people lash out and what's driving them. But you can never guarantee forgiveness. But if there's genuine love and mutual desire to build something better, you start seeing the beauty in someone else's flaws and are able to realize your own.

That's the only way to really connect someone.

That's the entire point of the Rift.

located in macy’s. this is an open starter for @shrikestart

working in retail was something xena assumed nobody really liked doing. sure, there were plenty of perks that came with her job, but she wasn’t passionate about upselling the newest pair of loafers to another middle aged woman who felt obliged to comment on her being much too pretty to be working at a mall. xena would have preferred to be working in a more creative field, but she wasn’t hung up on the fact that her passions had to be sidelined into hobbies; as long as she could still shred on her prized possession bass and move her body to some sort of beat in her free time, xena would be happy.

happy wasn’t the emotion she found herself feeling in the shrike heights macy’s that day, however. “i swear, if i have to deal with one more old man stealing from the women’s department…” she spoke breathlessly as she marched back over to the counter where her customer waited. “you’d think it wouldn’t be too hard, working at macy’s. there’s hundreds of them all over the country, couldn’t be that bad, right?” she spoke in a fiery tone, clearly quite annoyed at the trouble she had been made to deal with. “anyway- sorry, i’m here now.”

Gabrielle is a Lannister but she is Tywin’s bastard (affectionate) who he keeps secret by paying her mother hush money and making sure they live comfortably across the narrow sea, until (drumroll), her mother dies and he’s left with a 18 year old girl he doesn’t know what to do with…so…he marries her to the bamf (look it up) Khal of the most powerful Dothraki tribe and it actually turns out to be a Khaleesi (Xena) of many skills.

Then they hatch a plan (enter plot) to take over Westeros and put Gabrielle on the iron throne (cause she’s queenly.)

growing up as the youngest of three, xena idolised her older brother and sister - despite how starkly different they were from each other.

she became a product of both of their influence. she mimicked her sister’s beauty routines and her brother’s bad habit of blasting questionable music far too late at night.

despite her parents being less present in her life than she would have liked (as they both worked long hours to provide for the family) xena had a good upbringing, and her siblings who helped raise her did an incredible job in her eyes.

she had an easier time in school than she would have thought. she was smart enough to get decent grades, she landed a position on the cheerleading team and she always had an abundance of friends in all different cliques.

xena ran with the popular crowd, but also valued her individuality enough to do her own thing when she pleased.

one of those things happened to be music. following her brother’s influence, music quickly became one of the biggest parts of her life, and it turned out she had a very natural talent for playing it.

there’s not an instrument xena can’t at least figure out how to play, but her favourite and most special instrument has to be bass - just like her brother plays. her most prized possession is the left handed bass that he gifted her for her eighteenth birthday.

xena often feels like she’s living a double life, being the perfect image of a past cheerleader and prom queen nominee at times, and the perfect image of an edgy musician who would have laughed at the idea of prom at other times.

overall xena is extremely independent and as confident as she needs to be. she’s not a big talker but she’s outgoing, approachable and friendly.

she can have episodes of being more reserved when upset, and when she’s mad she’s severely angry. it can be scary when she’s in a mood that’s not good, and the fear she feels over the attacks certainly brings that up as her emotions are unstable in a way she’s not sure how to deal with.
