Van Sickle Barn by a. byron balogh
Via Flickr:
Restored in the 1980s this old red barn was built by the Henry Van Sickle who operated a hotel and pony express station at the foot of the Old Kingsbury Grade near Genoa, Nevada. According to the National Pony Express Association, "Rancher Henry Van Sickle constructed a two-story hotel in 1857 with a bar, kitchen and a store to cater to the needs of emigrants traveling to California as a rest stop before the climb over the high Sierra Nevada. When the Pony Express started operation in 1860, it became a station where the riders stopped to change horses." The entire Van Sickle Ranch originally covered thousands of acres in Nevada and California, south of Lake Tahoe. As a memorial to his late grandfather Jack Van Sickle, Henry Van Sickle donated 542 acres of his land to the State of Nevada in 1988 to create a new Nevada State Park. Subsequently, the State of California purchased the adjacent land, the Van Sickle family’s former Crescent V Ranch, to connect the park to the community of South Lake Tahoe.
