The trope-ification of fiction is just…tiring to me.
Like to each their own, but when I read I want substance. I don’t want a series of tropes connected by a thin thread of what’s supposed to be a plotline.
I was looking up some books to add to my TBR and there’s literal stories out there that are just titled after tropes? Like along the lines of ‘Grumpy Man and Sunshine Girl’ and whatever (not the actual title from what I can remember).
Not to mention I read an article a while ago of an author who’s semi-popular saying she needs her agent/editor to feed her tropes so she knows what to write like c’mon.
And, right now, I’m reading a book that had an AMAZING premise and promised story—but I’m almost halfway through and said story has not even started and it’s just a bunch of tropes: Foul-Mouthed Man and Innocent Princess (some lackluster HanLeia that really just made me hate both characters it’s a painful read now), Insta-Lust disguised as ETL, Forced Proximity, etc.. I’m so mad. The story sounded so good. I just might write it out of spite.
Like?? Have we really strayed that far?? Has society really fallen that far that they can’t read things without obvious tropes?

i've been deliriously sick for the last 3 days and had a dream they added this new minecraft mob called The Thirst which would spawn randomly in your vicinity along with a chat alert that 'The Thirst has spawned near you' and if you didn't place a bucket of water down asap to distract it, it would suck you dry

Is it wrong of me to search for the tag "Holy Water as Lube as Holy Water" on Ao3
I think it should be a tag.

i NEED yall to remember that the reason vampires dont have a reflection is because back when the myth was written mirrors were made with silver, silver is considered a pure/clean/holy metal, they cant reflect in silver mirrors because they strayed from the light of god
Same reason why So many monsters can be defeated by silver. its not jsut a "they dont have reflections" thing its a "they are seen as demonic and holy metal rejects them" thing

FFXIVWrite 2023 DAY 6 - RING
Rhiki is hiding something, and Thancred is going to figure out what it is.
Rating: General Genre: Humor, fluff Characters: Warrior of Light (Z'rhiki Irhi), Thancred Waters, Alisaie Leveilleur Word Count: 1,435 Content Warnings: None
Thancred watched the Warrior of Light idly twist the ring once more around her finger as she leaned over the Rising Stones’ small bar. Was she still fidgeting with that thing? He hadn’t paid it any mind when it first appeared, but with his keen eye for detail he couldn’t help but notice how often over the past few days her fingers had found their way to it; tracing along the gold band, absent-mindedly tapping at the center stone, sliding it up and down, rotating it around her finger (it was clearly too loose). He doubted she even realized she had been doing it. It did make him curious, though, so he slid from the back storeroom to join her at the bar.
“You really are quite taken with that thing, aren’t you?” he asked, making sure to keep his tone casual, aloof.
“Huh?” Z’rhiki looked up from her hands at him. “What do you mean? With what?” He watched the subtle change in her expression as she transitioned from not knowing what he was talking about to knowing what he was talking about but pretending she didn’t.
“The ring,” he said, still feigning indifference. “It is quite nice. Very… understated, yet elegant.” Very not like you, his tone implied.
It was a nice ring – wrought in gold, clearly expertly crafted, with swirling engravings decorating the band. He couldn’t tell what type of gem served as the centerpiece, but it seemed to shift from pale pink to orange a she fidgeted with it. Padparadscha, maybe? Imported from Thavnair? That couldn’t have been cheap. It would certainly have been a splurge if she had bought it for herself, but he was becoming increasingly certain she hadn’t.
“Oh, this?” She lifted her hand to give him a better view, clearly playing dumb. “Yeah, I thought it looked nice.”
“I do hope you said more than ‘It’s nice” to whoever gave it to you. They might have thought you were underwhelmed.”
“W-what? Nobody gave it to me.” She suddenly sounded defensive, and pulled her hand back towards herself.
Thancred smirked. “Oh, come on. That’s not the sort of ring one buys for themselves.”
This annoyed her – he noticed her tail beginning to twitch behind her. “How do you know? Maybe it’s the sort of ring I would buy for myself.”
“I certainly doesn’t look like something you would pick out for yourself.” She opened her mouth, probably to insist that he couldn’t possibly know every piece of clothing or jewelry she had ever purchased, but before she could get any words out he added, “And, even if it was, you probably would have bought the right size. That one’s clearly a little too large.”
Not a mistake one would usually make when buying themselves a ring, especially an expensive one. But it might be the kind of mistake one would make when buying a ring for someone else, whose measurements one wasn’t sure of.
It was hard to tell under the glaring overhead lights of the Rising Stones, but he thought her cheeks were  getting pink. “I- I just didn’t notice how big it was until I got it home, was all. I didn’t want to go all the way back to return it, so I just thought I’d… take it to a goldsmith or something to, you know, get it adjusted.”
He might have believed that line, had she not faltered at the beginning.
“I don’t think so. No, someone definitely gave it to you. Which isn’t that interesting in and of itself. What is interesting, though, is that you don’t seem to want to tell me who.”
She frowned and retorted, “Maybe I just wanted some privacy around my private life.”
He matched her scowl with a charming (he thought) grin. “So it was a gift, then?”
“No!”
“Was it from Aymeric?”
“No! I told you it wasn’t a gift!”
“Someone more embarrassing than Aymeric then,” he concluded. “Gods, it wasn’t from Estinien, was it?”
“Absolutely not!” Her words were hissed in aggravation.
“Seriously? You’re really not going to tell me? You always tell me all juicy details about your trysts! What’s so different about this one?”
Her tail was lashing back and forth now. “Just- just drop it, Thancred!” Her voice was firm, but he could tell from the way her eyes scraped the floor that she was more embarrassed than angry.
“What? It’s not as if I ever tell anyone.” He reminded her.
But when she kept her mouth shut, he pushed further: “You know I could find out if I really wanted to, don’t you?”
“I’d like to see you try!” The words were uttered in a menacing fashion, but he didn’t hear a threat in them.
He heard a challenge.
To his surprise and irritation, it was a challenge. He had been skulking about for weeks – following up on obvious leads, asking around, retracing her movements from the first time he noticed the ring. Intelligence gathering was his specialty, after all. There was no way she could have covered her tracks well enough to hide them from him. Or so he had thought, but every line of inquiry had led him to a dead end. For all of his time, energy, and skill, he had come up with nothing.
Or, rather, he had come up with just slightly more than nothing, which was even worse. For every ten people he questioned who could offer him no information, there was one who vaguely remembered seeing her walking with a much taller man. Or buying coffee for two in a café and returning to a table she was sharing with a miqo’te woman. Or trying on clothes and showing them to a complimentary light-haired viera. It was starting to drive him a bit mad. Try as he might he had not yet been able to track down a single one of these mysterious companions.
“Alright, I want a hint.” He came to stand over the table where Rhiki was sitting describing something to Alisaie with animated gestures.
She looked up at him, eyes wide in a parody of innocence. “A hint? About what?”
Thancred folded his arms in front of him. “You know very well ‘about what’.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” She replied curtly.
“The ring!”
Did she just roll her eyes? “Are you still on about that? Give it up already! I told you it was nothing!”
“Um…” Alisaie started to interrupt but neither of them gave her the chance.
“It’s clearly not nothing, or you would have just told me about it!”
“Why do you even want to know?!”
“Because I-“ He stopped. “You know what? You’re right. I don’t want to know. In fact, I don’t even really care! Keep your secret romantic entanglement if you like. I doubt it could really be that interesting anyway.” He paused again to see if she had anything to say to that.
“Okay,” She replied simply, turning back to Alisaie to continue their conversation.
He huffed, annoyed, and turned towards the door. He had better things to do with his time, he told himself. He let the door to the tavern proper swing closed behind him.
Alisaie watched Thancred leave over her shoulder. She waited a few seconds, listening to try and determine if he was actually gone. Eyes still on the door, she said to Rhiki, “You know he’s not actually going to give up, right?”
“Probably not,” Rhiki agreed genially.
Finally, she turned back to look at the Warrior of Light. She leaned forward. “You’re going to tell me, though, aren’t you? Please? I never get to be in on any of the good gossip! If you’re embarrassed, I promise I won’t tell anyone! I definitely won’t tell Thancred – you know I wouldn’t! So, spill! Where’d you get the ring?”
The overbearing light from the ceiling lamps caught in Rhiki’s eyes, making them gleam. “Oh, this?” She held up her hand  to display the ring to Alisaie. “I just found this in a dungeon I was asked to clear out a few weeks ago. I returned most of the stuff I recovered but I liked this and they let me keep it as payment.” A sly smile tugged at her lips.
Alisaie blinked, taking a moment to process what she had just heard. “That’s” she started, “That’s diabolical!”
“Is it?” Rhiki asked blithely. “I never told him anything that wasn’t true.”
Alisaie turned back to the door Thancred had just left through. “He’s going to be livid when he figures it out.”
Rhiki snickered, “Now that I’d like to see!”

saw some people claiming that cait corrain isn’t or is “barely” a reylo and while i do not think she’s representative of the fandom as a whole, that’s just wildly incorrect. she had a very popular fic called play to win that was an esports au and she used to cosplay reylo stuff all the time. you can still see it if you search her old ig handle commandercait.
Right. I had heard of that and discussed it very briefly over on Twitter/X (like maybe a half post idk, I’ve been busy with other stuff the past couple days).
It brings up some good discussion, though. I’ve seen a handful of shippers claiming that Cait “is no longer a Reylo” and all that jazz. And they’ve said this because of the drama, and not really before? (I’ve looked around a bit, her books are in lists of “Reylo authors” on Goodreads for example). But…who decides who is or isn’t part of a fandom anymore?
Starting down that trend just makes it a slippery slope: Who decides it? Who do they give that power? Will the others accept that? When does it turn from ‘overseeing’ to bullying? Will people get ‘exiled’ just because?
As we know, the internet is forever. You can’t just cut ties with things—especially someone else’s ties with fandom. They aren’t yours to cut. And, even though I’ve seen plenty of people, plenty of times, arguing that they’ve “cut off” and “kicked out” people from their fandom, said problematic people’s actions still hang onto the fandom like a shadow. I don’t think I’ve seen a fandom (and this includes anti-ship fandom) that doesn’t have at least one problematic event/person in its past.
And, yes, she isn’t the sole rep of the fandom at large. It’s unfortunate that the authors she* chose to attack got attacked, and I’m glad to see not only the Reylo fandom but book readers at large coming in to support them.
(*While evidence points to it being Cait alone, with rumors of it being a ‘friend’ of hers still swirling, I won’t settle on a 100% belief it was either of them until I hear/see proof for either case)

hnghgh love working on a fic & my brain at some point just going like “no.” and continuing to write it feels like banging my head against a hard surface (+scary). I want the words to appear on the page, I can *make* words appear on the page, but at a certain point it’s as if a wall suddenly rose in front of me and seizing it is impossible.
