They called it the Mt. Auburn Horror, the day when the passenger car of the city's first incline rocketed downhill and shattered into flinders at the top of Main Street, ending six lives. It was noon on 15 Oct 1889, and the busy incline had just carried nine passengers to the top of the hill. Of the nine passengers, six died of horrible injuries. The incline never recovered. Although it resumed service five months later, passengers sought alternative routes and the Mount Auburn incline closed in 1898.

No, this is not a new series of The Crown and this is not Netflix and chill! This is utopia and this is the business end of our game. Age 84 of Utopia has come to an end and we have networth, land, honour and war win crowns to be handed out.

I got to spend some time with Fate and Topsy to discuss their age.

Q. Obviously a great age for the kingdom, what would you attribute that to?

Utopia is a team game, and everything gets easier when there is minimal drama and high engagement amongst core and leadership. With how the age played out, we spent a lot of time sitting and waiting, but everyone was able to show up pretty much on a dime when necessary. We were also lucky to have many leaders capable of taking waves throughout the age, allowing for minimal burnout.

Q. Were there any moments in the age that you felt were turning points?

We only had two real engagements over the course of the age, first with Ascension and later with Ronin. Being able to snowball gc and wizzies from each of those conflicts let us grind out land as the server grew.

Q. Anything about the age in general that you felt were able to push you towards the outcome of winning both crowns?

In the previous two ages, the land/nw crown was won from a kd laddering together science and honor via war wins and then exploring to war the kd in #1. In those ages, the kingdom that explored had a unit disadvantage, but still won the conflict fairly handedly. Each time, despite the kd who was in the lead losing, we thought we’d have preferred being the initially larger kd, so going into this age decided to play for oow advantages where possible. We ended up having a few lucky breaks with many top kingdoms sorting to the top 10 very early in the age, leading to fairly extended wars, but choosing to focus on oow growth definitely put more initiative on our end.

Q. Anyone you would like to give a shoutout for?

Our entire roster was exceptional this age and deserves a ton of credit. In particular, we would like to thank Ning for helping secure theme crown. Francis, Dorje, Silent_Killer, and Memster for taking on waves at various points. Citadela for helping out with tm waves. Chigga, Marek, and Weed for sitting so much. Q. Do you have anything you wish to add that may not have been covered in the questions or just anything else in general?

We like to complain about changes pretty regularly, but we’d like to give a shout out to Hex and others who contributed to last age’s changes. With so much time oow, we got to watch a lot of wars and nearly every war was between kds that had a fairly different take going into the age on what the best core was, what the best tms were, and what kind of distribution of tms would be best. With a few exceptions, almost every kd that went into the age aiming to get a lot of wars was able to get to 6+ by eoa, which was nice to see.

Q. Obviously a great age for the kingdom, what would you attribute that to?

Our players played well and were proactive about stuff. Knew when and how to act. After a long period where we lacked true leadership and basically played hot potato with who's leading, we finally had leaders up for taking control. Combined with a good setup the age went well for us.

Q. Were there any stages in the age that you felt were turning points?

Might seem weird but actually, the loss against Merciless was the turning point. We couldn't find a war for a long time and we didn't engage them because they were tagged as resting and we respected that. We had nothing else to do so we prepared to wave somebody else and razed out a bunch of homes we had. Right after that Merciless waved us. Probably unknown to them they pushed us into desertions on their wave and we just couldn't recover from that. But after that war we got to pump up our numbers. Mostly WPA on Heretics and Mystics which could start farming honor hard after that war.

Q. Anything about the age in general where you felt the kingdom was able to push towards the final outcome of winning the honour crown?

Our setup was made to crush T/Ms in enemy kingdoms. Wasn't our intention to go for honor crown but we knew we would soak it in. A wall of heretics that can farm honor from attackers, three mystics to go high with honor and Orc/Warriors to bash down T/Ms and take their honor. Our setup and playstyle was the way to winning it.

Not much. Just that more kingdoms should dare to fight anybody. Don't be afraid to war somebody good. Don't be afraid of a challenge. Not saying it's Hipmunks. Take others as an example - Giraffes or Ronins/Merciless. War them! War them and learn a thing or two!

We started the age down a few provinces. We didn’t add up to 25 until about the 4th war. We merged with another KD this age. We picked up some very knowledgeable, very active players. This combined with our attack coordinators made for a fierce combination. There was lots of lost sleep

Q. What do you feel were consistent themes of the age that attributed to the kingdoms success this age?

Our goal this age was to see how we all meshed and to be happy with the result. Next age we will push harder.

Hmm, I’ve asked for this fic in exchanges but I might have to write this myself. So I really like Ed Brubaker’s series The Marvels Project – which is basically the beginnings of the Marvel superhero universe (Torch, Namor, Steve) told from the perspective of a pulp-era detective. So how about something similar from the perspective of Noir Tony who meets both pre-serum and post-serum Steve? I’ve kind of sketched out some ideas about Noir Tony being brought into a case about a missing WPA artist who friends worry about him. It’s all still kind of vague where it goes from there – maybe Tony keeps just missing Cap Steve and is on the trail of Artist Steve and they run into Nazis and a stonewalling American Army and all that. And fall in love with the backdrop of the looming World War. I don’t know – I feel a bit intimidated by the idea.

18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?

Not all that much. I sometimes write during my lunch break. I usually get about an hour or two at night – I find I’m more productive with less time to write. I usually have something on the television on the background (Avengers Assemble cartoon is my go-to) – it helps with the dialogue. I work out fic ideas during my work commute, although I’ve lost ideas from that.

I do try to write everyday. Even if I’ve had a ton to write at work.

I try to read some fic at night before I go to sleep and sometimes over breakfast if I have the time.

There’s been a ton of articles in the mainstream press condemning Sanders’ job guarantee proposal. They mostly rely on the historical ignorance of the American people and some fearmongering. They all read pretty much the same, so by addressing this one (and a bit of one it links to) I’m basically addressing all of them.

Does the federal government have the managerial competence to oversee the creation of so many jobs? Taylor is skeptical. (The 15 million added jobs would equal about 1 in 10 existing jobs.)

The WPA and the CCC alone in 1938 employed over 3.5 million. Federal employment was certainly well over 10% of all employed at that time, about 50 million. If they could manage that without all the technological advances over the past 80 years, why can’t the government now?

We will need to slot them into a system of management and oversight that has yet to be created or defined (unlike public education, where at least the goals and population to be served are clear enough).

It took about 3 years from the law creating the WPA to be passed to peak employment for that program. A lot of what it did were construction projects, but there were many different fields it operated in. Federal Project Number One alone employed 40,000 people in the arts in a wide variety of areas, including production and archival. All of these jobs wouldn’t just be make work. Imagine the amount of creativity that would be let loose by a similar program to this today:

Flanagan tallies up the achievement at the end of "Arena": 1,200 scripts presented, everything from "Murder in the Cathedral" to "Pinocchio." An average of 10,000 actors, writers, designers put to work each year (the project's major aim as a branch of the Depression-era federal employment program, the Works Progress Administration). A total audience of 30 million people in 31 states. Admissions ranging from free to $1.

All this achieved, as Flanagan innocently puts it, "for approximately the cost of one battleship"--$46 million.

I imagine it could be done in far less time with computerization.

They often have poor skills, wrestle with drug or alcohol problems, or are so discouraged that they’ve dropped out of the labor force.... it’s unlikely in the extreme that the millions of workers in this program could ever be made fully competent at their jobs.

Most mainstream economists believe that at 4% unemployment, or what’s referred to as “full employment” despite black unemployment being at 7%, everybody who’s unemployed is an idiot druggie waste-of-space who they’d prefer dead. I’m sure the average American would disagree, given that most of these people are family and friends, so these economists have to put things a little less bluntly. Poor skills in particular is funny, given that, in the next breath, economists are always talking about how few skills are needed in low-wage jobs, and that’s what makes them low-wage. It should also be pointed out though just how adaptable people are, given that the much-feared Chinese manufacturing economy is largely built around people who didn’t finish high school. People are quite good at learning hands-on for their jobs as long as their employer is willing to pay to train them, but so few employers are willing now that economists have to make up shit about “poor skills” to justify it.

The reason is Medicare. If it’s provided for those making $15 an hour, there will be pressures to provide it for most workers. Otherwise, uncovered workers might stage a political rebellion or switch from today’s low-paying private-sector jobs to the better-paid public-service jobs, as the Wall Street Journal’s Greg Ip notes. The same logic applies to child-care subsidies.

Shit, you managed to figure out the Bernie policy wonks’ game. They definitely are hoping that a job guarantee can be used to promote national healthcare and childcare, but to claim that providing such services to everyone in the world’s biggest economy is too expensive is laughable. It’s only because America provisions these services privately that they’re expensive in the first place. The cost would go down rather quickly once Medicare and childcare was given to everyone and the parasitical private sector providers were removed from the system.

One advantage claimed for these proposals is that it will force the private sector to raise wages and benefits to match the government guaranteed jobs. Some employers may do this. But my guess is that lots of employers would undertake a two-part strategy. The first part would be to figure out how to use training and additional equipment so that it made sense to give some workers a pay raise. The second part would be to fire all the other workers.

So you’re saying that productivity goes up while everyone stays employed? Great stuff!

The working assumption in these proposal seems to be that with a federal job guarantee in place, all the existing anti-poverty programs will stay in place--although they won't be needed as much. If there is a federal job guarantee, then there will be enormous political pressure to cut these programs.

That’s why the other half of a job guarantee has to be a universal basic income. They complement each other and help ensure the other can’t be abused. Just having a job guarantee can mean the separation of people into separate employed and unemployed castes, with the latter seen as undeserving thanks to their laziness. UBI only meanwhile creates an incentive to crater wages and to commoditize more and more of what we need to survive.

Then there’s inflation. The extra spending and higher wages might push prices upward.... Can the new workers be disciplined? Good question. “The problem with a job ‘guarantee’ is that you can’t fire people,” notes Taylor.

Inflation from wages is the only thing these people seem to recognize as inflation. Inflation resulting from massive housing bubbles is fine, of course, but inflation from a growing economy terrifies them completely.

My current passion project is volunteering for Librivox, an all-volunteer group that records public domain works as audiobooks (recordings are also public domain and you can find them on the Librivox site (Librivox.org) or Internet Archive (Archive.org). There are also a ton of You Tube channels that turn the audio recordings into videos by adding a still photo to it—which is where I first stumbled across the whole thing.

Most well known classics have been recorded at least once, and its a great resource if you (or a kid/student you know) need to read a book for school but would rather listen to it.

What I love is at this point is the many lower tier public domain works that are being recorded. They are often unjustly forgotten and I’m having a blast pitching in on the group projects and working on a couple of solo ones—my current solo is “True Stories of Crime from the District Attorney’s Office” from 1908 or thereabouts—an early true crime book!

Anyway I’m posting about it here for two reasons:

1) I know lots of readers and lots of teachers, including college profs, who may know and like some of the more obscure public domain stuff out there. Especially for the teachers, is there anything you assign or would like to assign that you would love to be able to tell your students that there is an audio version available? This could be an older magazine or journal article as well as books, as long as its out there on Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive or one of the other big public domain sites, it should be good to go.

It’s all volunteers so it’s not always the most professional sounding reading (tho there are some very talented readers in the mix) but for students who would rather listen to than read a work, or follow along while it’s read, it would be an option and 1) free! And 2) something that is not likely to be professionally recorded.

I will pass along any requests and suggestions made here, or even record them myself! (There are regular releases of short fiction, nonfiction, and poetry collections that shorter works could go into and I really enjoy making recordings for these).

Public domain can be confusing but basic rule of thumb is that if it was published in 1922 or earlier, it’s fair game in the US. And starting next year, after a long hiatus, works will start moving into PD again, everything from 1923 becomes copyright free on January 1 (assuming Congress doesn’t get roped into another extension, but they are pretty dang distracted by other stuff and I’m hoping it slides by unnoticed).

2) To let people know about this cool resource and to let you know how easy it is to get involved in volunteering for it if reading aloud or listening to audiobooks is your thing!

One reason I’m posting this is to reach out to my friends who are African American and urge them to volunteer or spread the word to others who might want to volunteer! Why? Because there are many many many PD works by Black authors that not yet recorded. The volunteers of Librivox include people from all ethnicities and from all over the world, but my sense from people’s voices is that the vast majority are white.

I really want to see more PD works by people of color in the audio catalog and am working on it myself when the works are in “standard English”. BUT so much writing, in stories, poetry, folklore collections and more are in “black dialect” and I don’t feel like it’s either right for me, a white woman, to be reading the words, and I would likely be terrible at it anyway! I think that is why many of us shy away from recording some of the material.

I am motivated to write about it here because I would love to encourage “black voices” to record these wonderful works. Two I want to bring to attention the most are: the James Weldon Johnson anthology of Negro poetry from the early Harlem Renaissance period. I was reading this last night and was bLOWN AWAY by the amazing poems in it, most of which I had never been exposed to in all my years of studying lit in grade school, high school and college. I want to see this fantastic work available as a free resource so that more people can discover these amazing poems.

Second, all US government produced documents are public domain no matter when they are published. This means that the WPA slave narratives are in the public domain even though they are from the 1930s. If you aren’t familiar, one of the jobs assigned to writers in the Works Progress Administration was to travel around the southern stars and interview the elderly folks who were the last surviving former enslaved people. Their stories are amazing but again, most of them are written in dialect. They really need to be available to everyone who wants to hear these stories but it does not feel right for them to be done by inauthentic voices.

So I would love to encourage and advise anyone who is interested in getting involved with Librivox, but especially I want to encourage people of color to discover this great resource and join in expanding it.
