On November 23, 1909, more than twenty thousand Jewish Yiddish-speaking immigrants, mostly young women in their teens and early twenties, launched an eleven-week general strike in New York’s shirtwaist industry. Dubbed the Uprising of the 20,000, it was the largest strike by women to date in American history. The young strikers’ courage, tenacity, and solidarity forced the predominantly male leadership in the “needle trades” and the American Federation of Labor to revise their entrenched prejudices against organizing women. The strikers won only a portion of their demands, but the uprising sparked five years of revolt that transformed the garment industry into one of the best-organized trades in the United States.

"Picketers across California, Colorado, Oregon and Washington who are represented by a coalition of unions walked off the job Wednesday. They are seeking higher wages and solutions to a short-staffing crisis, exacerbated by the pandemic, that has left workers feeling overburdened and run down."

people see the economy and society in general coming to a halt and don't think the workers should be payed more and instead think they should just stop striking
it's the lack of critical thinking like yes we all want the strikes to stop and how do we get there ? their answer is just stop. the right answer us listen to why their striking, pay them, protect them. why is that so hard. I just don't get it

the irony of the walt disney 100th anniversary promotionals using disney's "thank you to all of the hard workers (...) who made this dream come true" quote, the same year that they gave a big "fuck you" to the workers in wga and sag-aftra striking, is not lost on me. pay your fucking workers and don't forget who makes dreams come true, you fucking cockbites.

Amid negotiations between various unions and the Quebec government, CEGEPs will be affected by another strike action. This time, workers represented by the Syndicat de professionnelles et professionnels du gouvernement du Québec (SPGQ) will strike on Nov. 23 and 24, unless an agreement is reached by then. Union members are following in the footsteps of the 65,000 primary and secondary school teachers with the Fédération autonome de l'enseignement (FAE), who will be on unlimited general strike from Nov. 23.

We’re trying to take on the entire world to free Palestine when right now all we need to do is brainstorm
Our efforts need to be better planned. We can do some kind of global strike, but it has to be followed up. We can’t just have one day that they can recover from.
Strike and then keep striking (sound familiar?). Global strike, tax strike, essential workers strike. Use what we learned from covid. We have seen first hand who keeps the government running and it’s not the fucking government.
This won’t end anytime soon, we have to think longer term. However we respond to this in a way that makes something happen is probably going to be the collapse of much of our modern world. This isn’t just about Gaza, it’s Sudan and the Congo and Ukraine, it’s about covid and mystery illnesses and even the US with gun violence, inflation, UK too like guys the world, as fucked up as it always was, is falling apart.
Yes it’s easier to dissociate and drink and wait to die but that’s becoming less and less of a viable option
Just talk about it. We don’t need a full plan yet. Just start talking, hear ideas, build from them. We have multiple platforms to learn from each other before taking action. We don’t have to take on the whole world right now just talk about our options.

URGENT NOTICE FOR AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND: FIRE CRISIS WALK OFF
On Friday the 19th 2022 between 11am and 12pm, firefighters, dispatchers, trainers, fire investigators and other emergency staff will be walking off the job. Another hour long strike will be planned the following Friday, the 26th.
This means two things:
Practice care in this time. Reponse will not be provided to any of the usual jobs that these services fulfil (house fires, commercial fires, motor vehicle accidents, entrapments, medical events, hazardous material incidents, animal rescues, etc). FENZ111 will not be responding. Some districts are reporting that volunteer brigades will be responding and others are saying they will not be: assume they will not be at this point, and proceed with extra caution during this time frame. EDIT with more info: it has been confirmed that volunteer teams will still be responding, and calls will be sent through other 111 dispatch - this will still lead to significant time delays and no guarantee of a response.
Search your local fire station and see if they are calling for support. Many are asking for family, friends and supporters to meet at rally points at 10:45am in order to join them in walking off the job. It's been indicated to me that signs of support are appropriate to bring (I also know people who will be bringing kai to share).
You can also support the staff by going to FIRECRISIS and learning more about why firefighters have been on strike across Aotearoa, and why this unprecendented action is being taken.

Hey Tumblr should I join a union and start striking at my job.
My coworker has been gathering up people to do it bcs of
-unequal pay
-complete refusal to fix things that would better the working conditions (the air conditioning specifically)
And
-managers complete lack of care for working issues while taking their 3rd vacation this month
But I'm worried I'll lose my job if I do it. It's just a gas station so it's easy to replace people and I'd rather have a job where I'm treated like shit than no job at all
(plus Im getting a major surgery soon and will need time off so I'm worried)
Fr id like to hear opinions on this tho. I genuinely don't know what to do. I don't want to be a scab but I'm scared for my job security
