For Matthew
One of our dear crewmates, Stephanie, lost her son back in 2022. They both watched S1 together, and tragically he passed away not long after. Stephanie has been an active member of our crew for years now, and she reached out to Rhys and he made a lovely Cameo for her.
Some of you may have already seen it as she's been kind enough to share it with us previously, but after talking with Stephanie and hearing about who Matthew was, I wanted to put together a small dedication to him, and share Stephanie's words with you with her permission.
-- Dedication --
Matthew was 39 years old when he passed away, one of the original OFMD crewmates. He was a quirky, deaf, funny, and talented man who gave the world kindness despite the struggles he went through. He loved theatre, movies, video games, local art, and independent restaurants, and made a positive impact on everyone he met.
Matthew made his debut as a professional backyard wrestler in 2002 in the Phoenix New Times, and he worked on many well known video games in the industry doing development and quality assurance. He was truly a child a learning, and a true pilar of support in the community, and spent a great deal of time laughing and bringing light and joy to the world.
With his last wish, he donated his body to science, continuing on his loving and supportive legacy. Matthew was a wonderful man that was lost far too soon and his mother Stephanie, as well as anyone who knew him miss him so very much. Below is his obituary if you'd like to learn more about this wonderful crewmate of ours.
We salute you Matthew. You are the embodiment of all the kindness, acceptance, support, and loving things that embody Our Flag Means Death as well, and we're honored to have you amongst us in spirit. You are greatly missed, but never forgotten.
Tumblr media
--- Stephanie ---
"...I wanted to share something with the fandom about my journey with OFMD and wondered if any of you have experienced some personal growth right along with Ed and Stede (and of course many others in the crew).
My 39-year old son told me there was a show we had to watch that just dropped. He says "you'll love it because Taika's in it and we love pirates.” I laughed and said, “I’m in.”
I had no idea what it was about, but he and I had watched Black Sails together and he’s right—we love pirates. Within minutes of the pilot, I was completely won over and enjoying every moment of piracy on the Revenge. “What we’re about to do will be perilous . . . . “. From that moment on, I was in deep. We binged the first 3 episodes, rewinding to replay scenes and went mental when we realized that we had to wait a full week for 2 more episodes. My son and I would text about it non-stop and we both started quoting lines and getting even more invested. He was sending me meme's and screenshots and we started living our best pirate life.
By the end of the season, we had laughed, cried, and thoroughly discussed every aspect of Ed and Stede's growing relationship. We felt the pain of the cliffhanger and became “mentally devastated by what [we’ve] witnessed” and we certainly didn’t bottle it up.
We talked non-stop about the show. It became a daily thing. Articles, interviews, pictures and joining in the quest for renewal. Once it got renewed (PRIDE month), we were on the lookout for any posts or information about signs of filming, etc. We couldn't wait for the second season and were counting down the months after we knew filming wrapped.
Then the unthinkable happened. My son went into the hospital after having a slow recovery to multiple surgeries. Cliff Notes version: He was admitted and within 24 hours, he was in ICU on life support. My son had an extensive medical history beginning when he was an infant. 42+ surgeries and many air-evacs to Children’s Hospital so it was kind of the norm to go in and be out within a few days or week and be on the road to recovery again.
If you met him, you wouldn’t even know he had all the medical issues he had because he worked full time and carried himself like a stand-up comedian--always laughing and telling stories. He was a video gamer who had worked in the industry for 7 years until he had to take a leave to handle his medical issues and have a job that didn’t exceed 40 hours.. He was really a character and had a lot of funny mannerisms.
This time was different. He didn’t rally and 10 days later he tragically died from a fungal infection that they couldn’t identify until it was too late to treat.
He died in June, 2022, and the grief has been unrelenting and unbearable. I have literally shut down and spent the months grieving and in so much pain that I can barely leave the house and see anyone. It has broken me. When I saw the actual date that S2 would drop, my emotions were so intense because I didn't know how I could possibly watch it without him. I finally went on and rewatched Season 1 to prepare for Season 2 and found myself crying through the entire 10 episodes every time I thought of his witty banter during the season.
I wasn’t sure I could handle Season 2 without him. I talked about it a lot in Grief therapy and decided I would watch it with him and for him. I would try the first episode and see if I could do it. I would imagine all the conversations we would have had.
Matthew understood being different. He was Deaf and spent so much time in and out of hospitals and was bullied and teased his whole childhood. Even with all of that, he grew up to be loving, kind, accepting of all, and a VERY FUNNY guy.
On the day I started S2, I remembered that Matthew enjoyed being on the groups on Reddit for OFMD. Having never done Reddit, I was nervous, but decided I would see if the online community would be something that would give me the thing I missed so much . . . his commentary.
I couldn't believe how it opened my world up. Everyone was so nice and open to discussion about OFMD. The banter, information and excitement has been so restorative for me. It has given me a lot of healing to say the least.
I binged the first 3 episodes for S2 and went through it with all of you watching Blackbeard fall into the worst version of the Kraken that he had been and felt every emotion during the s2e3 Merman scene. Laughing and crying, laughing and crying, I waited for each week craving their reunion would finally happen and celebrated on-line with the entire fandom as we shared our analysis and thoughts.
Having a show that means so much to me has truly made me so happy. I loved that Ed and Stede are a middle aged couple and that they both had to grow so much to get to the point where they could be together in life as a beautiful and loving couple. I appreciated the writing so much because DJ and crew did really give us what he said he would, but in a far better way than I could have ever imagined.
I still need a s3 because I want to see Ed and Stede mature even more as a couple--no more leaving each other! I also want to see them meet up with their found family.
I want to see the new Revenge adventures, Spanish Jackie and Swede, Izzy legacy moments, Zheng, Oluwande, Wee John, Jim, Archie, Fang, Frenchie, Black Pete, Lucius, Buttons the sea gull, the perfect music and emotional parallels to past episodes and, of course, revenge for Minor Prince Ricky, Is that asking too much? I'm sure I left out so much else I want to see, but you all get it because you are stuck in this vortex right along side of me.
I dream of HBO/Max renewing this sooner rather than later so I can start thinking of when they will be filming and following all the hints that unfold. This show means so much to me and I am grateful that it exists.
I feel like I can be a better version of an ally to the community I love so much by immersing myself within all the representation in this treasure trove of storytelling. I learn so much by seeing these relationships develop into deep and committed love and have such respect for all of us who just want to see these relationships normalized everywhere in society. We all benefit from inclusion and I am very very grateful for this show. It means more to me than I could ever explain.
I'm sorry I rambled, but I am just so appreciative of all the people in this group who just share and talk and roll around in all our in-depth chatter.
I celebrate this series and everyone that worked so hard to provide this beautiful story. I feel my son's presence every moment I watch it (on repeat) and discuss it every single day.
Izzy's (Con's) death scene touched me deeply . . . thinking about losing my son and how that felt and how I held onto him for as long as I could so I wouldn’t forget how it felt to hold him. Taika's commitment to the pain of losing Izzy felt like it paralleled all my feelings since the loss. Izzy's deathbed voice and words have lived in my heart ever since.
Con and Taika were top tier and seeing all the crew's emotions as they watched what was happening felt so raw and touching. I also felt so much from s2e3 when Ed is dead and Stede is begging him to live . . . I lived that as well, convinced that my son would somehow prove them all wrong and open his eyes. I said it over and over and when Ed opened his eyes, I just felt every single emotional hurdle.
Yes, I was a bucket of tears through it all, but I also felt a lot of healing. I’d love to hear from any of you who have had some kind of evolution or growth from this gift of a show."

From that ask meme, this probably doesn't count as 500 words but I would love to hear any commentary you have about scene where Wyll duels Lord Andoril from NLTS!
The duel itself, from the moment Wyll tells Lord Andoril to draw to the moment where Andoril yields, actually is about 500 words! So I'll break that down a bit.
"Wyll duels an asshole noble at a fancy ball over Astarion's honor" was one of the very first plot beats I came up with for NLTS, right after I got the idea for the premise, and I shaped a lot of the first half of the story around it. It’s a full-on romance novel hero moment, it’s exactly how seventeen-year-old Wyll would try to right an injustice, and it arguably created more problems than it solved. Good stuff. The duel was originally even more of a setpiece, with Wyll pulling out some real Errol Flynn shit, but while Wyll at 24 could disarm Lord Andoril in three moves and slash a Z into his clothes for good measure, Wyll at seventeen doesn’t have that level of skill or confidence. I reminded myself that Wyll could do plenty of swashbuckling in Part 2, and that said swashbuckling would be even more fun if readers could see how much he’d grown. And even though I knew Wyll was going to win, I didn’t want the duel itself to feel like a foregone conclusion, with Wyll clearly outclassing Lord Andoril from the very start. And, you know, it’s another fun opportunity for Wyll to compare himself to his father and feel, once again, like he’s fallen short of where he should be.
I mentioned in an earlier post that I based Wyll’s fighting style on destreza, a form of early modern Spanish fencing that focuses on mobility. It felt right both in terms of Wyll’s general toreador aesthetic and influence (which I believe is mentioned in the BG3 artbook) and in terms of his skill as a dancer. Lord Andoril fights more like an Italian fencer, with a heavy focus on lunges. I’m not super familiar with fencing texts and styles from that period, so I hunted down some exhibition matches on YouTube and used them as references when I essentially blocked out the fight. (Like I’ve mentioned before, the way I write is heavily theatrical. Heavily.)
Oh, and you gotta love Wyll ultimately gaining the upper hand because of how dang sincere he is. Lord Andoril isn’t prepared for Wyll to actually be angry on Astarion’s behalf. He’s caught off-guard when Wyll makes it clear that he is taking this seriously, and that this isn’t about soothing his own injured pride, as a lot of duels among the nobility tend to be. Wyll’s keeping to a code of honor here, but not in the way that’s expected of him. And there are consequences to that.

(yet another) rant: Please stop with the frivolous Trigger Warnings
(Note: If you want to skip the recipe blog intro and get to the actual important stuff, scroll down to the header that says, "Which Warning to Use on Your Post")
Sooo I made a text post that had a few words in capital letters mixed in for effect (the rest of the text was in standard formatting). Someone reblogged it with the tags "tw: all caps" and "tw: capital letters."
The existence of these tags, specifically in the form of a trigger warning, struck me as weird. I mean, I can see why someone might be uncomfortable with an all-caps text block, if they've dealt with abusive/angry capslocked emails or something, and I can see how large blocks of capitalized text could be difficult to read, and some users might prefer to avoid them. But...
Limited capitalization as emphasis (e.g. dropping OH WAIT in the middle of otherwise lower-case text to indicate a shift in tone) does not present the same issues as a solid block of capslocked text;
I have not encountered this tag in the plethora of posts that employ the meme/joke format of subverting standard case usage or alternating case (yes, the SpongeBob meme is a thing with an actual academic definition, and it also predates the existence of SpongeBob by some decades); and
Most importantly, while formatting definitely affects user experience and can be worth tagging for that reason, I wouldn't have escalated it to the level of a trigger, which is a term with a pretty specific definition:
The concept of ‘triggering’ describes the re-experiencing of unpleasant PTSD symptoms such as intrusive thoughts being evoked by exposure to materials which spark traumatic memories. Hence, content warnings have a long presence in psychiatric literature. [source: Typology of content warnings and trigger warnings: Systematic review]
(Full disclosure for anyone who hasn't already learned from reading my rants: I have a background in behavior science, so I'm all about scientific definitions and correct application of same.)
But I thought that maybe I was misinterpreting what was being tagged, and I like learning what I should tag in future posts, so I thought I'd look deeper into those tags and see if I was missing something.
Welp. It sure was educational.
Turns out there are established "trigger warnings" on Tumblr for all of the following (not a comprehensive list; these are just the ones I also saw when scrolling through the caps tags, since many of those posts had more than one thing tagged):
any text with two or more capital letters in sequence
any text in italics
any text underlined
any text in boldface
any text in a font other than the default
any text in a color other than the default (as well as tags for each individual color)
images in black and white
images in color (how dare color exist)
images with... subjectively brighter? colors
images without ALT text
posts containing emoji
and my favorite entry, which for obvious reasons I can't describe by the content it's supposedly protecting us from:
"tw just in case"
O_o
So... where to even begin.
I guess I'll get the promised rant out of the way (for those of you who prefer to stay positive, skip ahead two paragraphs): It's no wonder that much of society mocks the very concept of trigger warnings, when they're used this... I have to come right out and say frivolously. Heck, even I'm having trouble taking the greater Tumblr community seriously right in this moment, and I've been part of it for *mumble* years and practically live here. Who in the academic/corporate/entertainment/quote-unquote real world is going to honor a request for content warnings when they see that the """kids these days""" consider italicized text a psychological trigger they need to be protected from? And you can just imagine some dudebro saying, "Wow, these special snowflakes are so fragile they're even traumatized by seeing color, lulz. We should see what really freaks them out!" ...and that won't end well.
The obvious rebuttal to that point is to argue that these tags aren't intended for use by the outside world, most of which already thinks Tumblr died years ago. Not that this has ever stopped Twitter and Reddit and Facebook users from screenshotting Tumblr posts to claim ownership of mock before, but honestly the extra-Tumblr world is the less important concern here, so I won't labor that point. The more immediate issue is how this affects Tumblr users, the Tumblr community, and the experience we're all so proud of being able to curate for ourselves.
The critical point is this: Tags exist for Tumblr users to find things of interest and avoid things they don't want to see. Warnings exist for Tumblr users to protect themselves. Conflating the two can cause not only confusion, but the opposite of the desired effect of being able to curate your experience.
Please note that it is not wrong to tag any of the things listed above. By all means, tag everything in your post! Tag away! Tag your text formatting and images and colors! Use that whole tag space so people can find/not find your content as desired! But none of these things should be categorized as trigger warnings. Trigger warnings, content warnings, and tags are all separate things, and should be used appropriately so people know what to look for/avoid in a post.
Now, you may well ask: Why do the semantics matter? If something's tagged, why does it matter how it's tagged? Isn't it better to warn people about anything and everything that they might possibly not like?
For those affected by PTSD, trauma, phobias, anxiety, psychosis, optically-sensitive medical conditions, etc., being able to trust tags -- and the community's overall reliability where they are concerned -- can be critical to their health and well-being. When the community's tags become imprecise, sloppy, or unspecified -- for example, when people start throwing tags like "tw just in case" on their posts instead of actually describing what is in the post -- it becomes unpleasant or even dangerous for those people to exist in that community. And although doubtless well-intentioned, the kind of overzealous helicopter tagging that labels things like text formatting or the presence of emoji as a trigger does two things: First, it can confuse filters and sandbag search results (for search purposes, tags are treated like a word bank, rather than individual line items). Second, it fosters a general lack of regard for real, life-threatening triggers. If Tumblr users get used to seeing every tiny little thing called out as a "trigger" -- trigger warning, there's a picture of a bird in this post! trigger warning, I can't spell so there's probably a word misspelled in this post! trigger warning, someone used a heart emoji in this post! trigger warning, here's a photo with the color orange in it! trigger warning, there's a banana in this post! Self image trigger warning, I'm having the worst hair day, lol! j/k! -- then subconsciously, "trigger warning" becomes synonymous with "lots of things random people find mildly annoying, so tag stuff if you happen to think of it" instead of "a few important things we should be diligent about tagging because someone's life might quite literally depend on it."
I know categorizing tags can be confusing, and in recent years there hasn't been much consistency in usage on Tumblr, so here's a cheat sheet to help you decide what warnings to use (and to be clear, I didn't make these up; these are sourced from academic literature and teaching guides, and were -- back in the Olden Days -- also more widely used on Tumblr.)
For a more thorough description of the most common types of content to post warnings about, see this PDF.
Which Warning to Use on Your Post:
Trigger warning (TW): Used to denote content that may trigger a PTSD episode, a severe psychological reaction, or a physiological reaction due to a medical condition (e.g. epilepsy). Broadly speaking, this warning is intended to mitigate risks that may exist because of a viewer's personal experience and/or medical status. Examples of things that should be tagged TW: sexual violence; child abuse; flashing gifs
Content warning (CW): Used to denote sensitive material that may make viewers uncomfortable or upset, or that some viewers may prefer not to see, but not necessarily invoke a traumatic personal experience. Broadly speaking, this warning is concerned with a viewer's comfort level. This can include general concepts (e.g. discussion of homophobia) as well as specific instances (e.g. use of homophobic language). Examples of things that should be tagged CW: racism; nudity; death
Descriptive tags (not warnings): Used to describe the content of a post, without value judgment, so that it is searchable and/or avoidable. (And also to write rambling comma-free essays, because Tumblr is just Like That. But that's a whole separate thing.) Examples of things that can be (generally) tagged: the themes or topics being discussed; black and white images; capitalized text; insects; the color green; memes; rainbows; digital art; literally anything else that appears in your post
Can people still dislike/be upset by things that aren't on a broadly-accepted TW/CW list? Absolutely. But that's not quite the same as a trigger, and that's why we also have general tags.
Here's an example of the difference between disliking or being triggered by content (source: "The right way to use a Trigger Warning," emphasis mine):
Trigger Warnings are here to prevent people who have experienced traumatic experiences to be exposed to something that might trigger a physical and/or mental reaction. Trigger is the key word here. “Trigger*” is used to talk about PTSD and mental illness. “Triggered” and “offended/upset” are not the same concept. I can be upset if I see a picture of a beautiful cake because I cannot bake, but it won’t trigger a post-traumatic reaction.
You aren't going to be able to anticipate every single person's likes and dislikes, phobias, emotional associations, and so on. There's a temptation to try to cover every base imaginable, but that's actually... less than helpful. Actively unhelpful, in some cases. In addition to the reasons I cited earlier, here's an example of how "I'll tag it just in case someone doesn't like a thing" warnings can be confusing:
Let's say I have two followers: WingHater96 has a deep phobia of butterflies, while ButterSuperFly78 adores butterflies. Tagging a post "butterflies" helps them both navigate my feed more efficiently: WingHater96 can block the entire "butterfly" tag, while ButterSuperFly78 can search for it.
However, let's say I tagged that post in the form of a warning like "tw: butterflies" and hid it below a Read More just in case someone following me didn't like butterflies. WingHater96 would still have that post blocked, because it contains the word "butterfly" in the tag. It would also still appear in ButterSuperFly78's search results for the same reason -- the presence of the warning doesn't affect search results at all. But when ButterSuperFly78 sees the warning tag, they might now be confused about whether the post is full of pretty butterfly photography (which they would like to see), or if maybe the reason I put a warning on it is because it's about butterflies being harmed, because why else would you warn someone about butterflies when they're the best things ever? But wait, does OP know that they're the best things ever? Is the warning there because OP secretly hates butterflies?? Do they need to unfollow OP now because they're a butterfly-hater??? and ButterSuperFly78 would not know whether to view the post or scroll past until they psychoanalyze me to determine my personal feelings on butterflies.
Adding the warning provided zero additional benefit for the person who already had the tagged thing blocked, but it caused additional problems for the person actively seeking out that thing.
Obviously this is a bit exaggerated (...though, speaking from experience, only a bit), but it's a lot more efficient to just list the things that are in a post in the tags without framing them as warnings. That way, people with different likes and dislikes can curate their own experience more easily, and know to take trigger and content warnings more seriously when they DO appear.
-
TL;DR Trigger warnings exist to help people avoid PTSD or adverse psychological/physiological reactions. Casually throwing the word "trigger" in front of things that are not triggers makes people stop taking the need for warnings seriously, and can confuse people trying to curate their Tumblr experience. Reserve TW and CW for actual triggers/sensitive content and use standard tags for other things.

My Top 5 favorite ships of all time 😎 (with bonuses)
hello. the demons in my head said to do it and i will do it now. (read it in the number 15 foot lettuce guy voice) also , they are not in a particular order , just they are on the same level (also this is an indication of what ill be prob posting on my page )
Number 5. LeviHan (Hange x Levi , from AOT)
what can i say , i sometimes do enjoy 50% straight romance. its not fully 100% because hange is a demigirl , you cannot disagree , it is in all religion texts.
Anyway , i just love the absolute idiot x emo fuck dynamic. warms my heart and size difference , what cant ya love?
Number 4. Beiguang/Eimiko (Ningguang x Beidou / Yae Miko x Ei , from genshin impact)
Ah the classic lesbian ships , my beloved. I couldn't decide which to put so i put them on the same spot! look at my monkey brain go.
Eimiko is a classic for a good damn reason. They gay as fuck for each other , and i just love the "takes no shit" lesbian and the "i DONT give a flying fuck " lesbian you just love it
Same with Beiguang. They are a classic for a reason. Them being gay ass fuck can also explain but the free gf and takes no shit gf my beloved.
Number 3. Zukka ( Zuko x Sokka , from ATLA)
You know , as i said previously i love emo fucks and goofy bitches being together. And additional points from finding the ship in memes. Its just... SOO GOOD. mhm.
Also both missing mums less gooo
Number 2. Bowuigi ( Bowser x Luigi , from... Mario universe idk)
If you follow me or what bullshit i post , you know i AM OBSSESED with these FUCKERS. THEY BROKE INTO MY HOUSE , STOLE MY HEART , GOT ME TO BED AND KISSED ME ON MY FOREHEAD.
they have me floating in the air , magic on my titties , and you know. I am not complaining. like someone else 😼😳 (also like... size diffrence.) also monster fucking less go.
Number 1. Xiaitto , AraXiao? idk anymore (Xiao x Itto , from Genshin impact)
I got you bowuigi shippers here in my grasp , and you cannot escape me from talking about my fav genshin ship.
... words cannot describe how I AM IN FUCKING LOVE WITH THIS SHIP. But i cant usually express that because , theres no fucking xiao x itto posts. Anywhere. Even on twitter or pintrest. I am truly disappointing in humanity because of it.
Now first of all , one of or my favourite dynamic is goofy hoe x emo bitch. and as you can see , they are the infact definition of the himbo x emo trope.
second of all , JESUS THE SIZE DIFFRENCE IS KILLING ME. YOU MEAN THAT PEOPLE DONT SHIP THE TALLEST AND (maybe) SHORTEST MALE CHARACTERS? WTHHHH
third, the actual interactions in game make me wanto cry and scream and want them to live happily ever after in the mountain house or something (2.7 really is amazing guys)
and fourth , the aus this parring can be is truly amazing. I can put them in a royal au , with babysitting au and it works perfectly. (im thinking of writting a fanfic based on that , because into you is good omggg)
Honorable mentions
Any oc x oc parring i have. People wont get you my loves but i love you none the less . (need to get on writting a work on them)
some mha ships , including kiribaku , todomomo , jiromomo , and todojiro (idk emo x deppressed kinda slay)
thomato and chili , couldnt fit you guys but you guys are a high 6th place :(
anddd yeah thats the end of my rambling. thank you for reading it , and if any of the ships intrest you (mainly itto x xiao) please talk to me , i need someone to talk about them with me.
adios

Post 1: Too Controversial
Before I begin, let me paint you a picture (don’t worry, it’s on-topic, just a quick hypothetical to help set up the discussion): You’ve got this friend, for the sake of simplicity, his name is Josh. Josh’s kind of notorious for his unpopularity with the ladies, and his previous track record with women speaks that point loud and clear. He’s never held a long-term relationship with anybody, despite his very vocal desires for romantic companionship.
Then one day, while you’re scrolling through the torrent of self-pitying messages, and passive aggressive, borderline misogynistic, memes posted to his Twitter page about the friendzone, Josh texts you that he’s got a date on Thursday with somebody named Monika. Although you’re sure this will end in another broken hearted Friday night bar run, your expectations are suddenly jostled as Josh invites you to meet her before their Thursday night outing.
You show up to Josh’s apartment, and find him dressed in a full on tuxedo, complete with a comically large bouquet of roses, presumably for his lucky date. He asks if you’d like to meet her now, which only further perplexes you, as the apartment is seemingly empty besides the two of you. Josh assures you all is well, and proceeds to open up his laptop to reveal a brunette anime girl sitting at a desk, dressed equally as extravagantly as himself, whom he then proceeds to introduce as Monika, before she does the same, after Josh prompts her to do so via an on-screen textbox.
Although you may have several words in mind to describe Josh after this interaction, an increasingly popular term to describe a person who has developed romantic or sexual feelings for a fictional character is “fictoesxual”.
The concept of people turning to non-human entities for romantic fulfillment has become increasingly prevalent over the past decade or so, especially with the strides in artificial intelligence making interacting with computers more lifelike than ever before. Although the idea of people crushing on fictional entities is nothing new, I believe the first coining of the term came courtesy of a study published in January 2021 by Finnish psychologists Doctors Veli-Matti Kasrhulahti and Tanja Valisalo. The investigation consisted of the two searching through internet forums related to users discussing their attraction for fictional entities, and found that many of those who categorize themselves as attracted to fictional characters (another term coined by the study), were aware of the parasocial nature of their relationships with the fictional entities.
In addition to “fictosexuality”, “fictoromance” and “fictophille” were terms used during the discussion, and although the authors opted for the lattermost descriptor when discussing their work, I have chosen to use the formermost term, as it seems to be the preferred word by outlets reporting on fictosexuality, such as this article published last year in The New York Times about a Japanese man marrying Hatsune Miku, or this 2107 report from Kotaku about a research company including in their job listings that they would not only internally honor employee’s marriages to fictional characters, but that they would include such benefits as a 5,000 yen stipend, on top of additional time off for their waifu or husbando’s birthday.
I’ll be candid with you, my inspiration for this topic was born mostly out of a rejection I had received from the paper I write for. They were writing a block of valentine’s day pieces, and offered to the group an article about “controversial Valentine’s Day opinions”. I took them up on the offer, and wrote an article about how the idea of people choosing to live their lives in committed relationships with fictional characters may seem odd and fringe for now, but given the blazingly fast advancements that have been made, and will likely continue to be made in the field of AI, we’re likely only to see more and more people turning to non-human entities such as fictional characters for romantic fulfillment.
Of course, as I mentioned, this topic was rejected. It was too controversial if you’d believe it (actually almost cost me my job that I don’t get paid for), but the fact that it remained unpublished almost cements my point that this remains an uncomfortable possibility that we may have to deal with sooner than we may expect.

Final Lines Meme
I’ve been tagged by both @aloveforjaneausten and @jomiddlemarch :)
Rules: Post the final line of your 10 most recently published fics. (Or as many as you have published.) You can either omit multi-chapter WIPs or include the last line of the most recent chapter (or several chapters). Up to you!
Okay, let’s see, omitting multichapter stuff...  Note: all of them are Darklina stuff, so I’m not going to note that individually
And now he was in deep trouble. (Apodyopis, drabble)
“Yes.” (Advent Romance, one-shot)
Her laugh is loud enough that he is sure it can be heard in the hallway. (In a Mirror, Birghtly, one-shot)
Gods, he loved this woman, this minx —more than he’d ever loved anybody. But this screamed for vengeance. (Led by Desire, ch3)
Aleksander let out a long, resigned breath. “Yeah…” (Piece of Cake, ch7)
Great honor or not, she was starting to see that she would never be a good fit in this palace. (Taled from the Palace, ch3)
…It’s past noon by the time she texts Genya the next day. (A Million Dreams, one-shot)
Well, she thought, listening to his heartbeat, the bouquet might prove to be right after all. (Fickle Fates and Falling Flowers, one-shot)
“As will I,” he replied, but his words were only greeted by the sound of her soft snores. Smiling and tightening his grip around her—once again reminding himself that she was right there and she was well—, he followed her to the land of dreams, this time seeing a vision not of blood and death, but of a child with a joyous laugh, long hair dancing in the wind. (A Person to Call Home, one-shot)
Aleksander just watched her for a moment, then laughed; bringing her hand to his lips, he pressed a quick kiss to her knuckles. “As my Tsaritsa wishes,” he said, then headed towards the bathroom. Mama’s word was law, after all. (Conquering the Foul Beast, one-shot)
And the sad thing is, the tenth oldest is over haf a year old... I need to pick up my game.
Not tagging anyone, feel free to do it!

3, 7, and 29!
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed?
I absolutely cannot write without 1) a highly curated playlist and 2) a fun little drink. Doesn't matter if it's an iced coffee or a seltzer or a glass of wine, it just has to be something fun, preferably in a fancy glass with a straw.
I basically cannot draft without doing word sprints, and I type very fast, so when I write first drafts I'll literally crank out 1000-1200 words in two fifteen minute sprints and then be done for the day.
Also I've posted all the weird notes I leave for myself when I'm editing here before (are we really going with that metaphor? a transition mayhaps?), those are pretty cursed.
7. What is your deepest joy about writing?
Writing connects me to an impossibly long human tradition of oral and written communication — humans have been telling each other stories for as long as we have been humans. It doesn't matter if I'm working on a novel, or writing a goofy fanfiction, or just texting my friend a funny story, I'm still honored to participate in that human tradition.
On a more personal note, reading and writing have always been the way I feel most comfortable processing my experiences and navigating the world around me. When I write I feel like I fish in water, I am doing exactly the thing I am supposed to be doing.
29. Where do you draw your inspiration? What do you do when the inspiration well runs dry?
I am a terrible thief of my actual, real life for writing inspiration. I set almost all my stories in places I've really been, and I spend a lot of time listening to other people talk so that I can write my dialogue as realistically as possible. This is an occupational hazard for anyone who is friends with me.
I don't really jive with 'inspiration' as a per-requisite for writing. If I sit down to write and I open the word document and I stare at it for awhile and set a timer and I still can't write, I call that "word machine broke" (vis a vis that "McDonalds Ice Cream machine broke meme). When Word Machine Breaks, it's usually just because I am a real human person and NOT a word machine, and therefore I need things like "food" and "rest" and "thirty minutes of exercise every day." Once I start addressing those things, the word machine usually comes back on, even if it takes a couple of days.
Send me writing asks!

A refresher on tags I commonly use:
I will try to tag fandoms whenever possible
I tag TV spoilers for 1 week and movie spoilers for 1 month after US release. If a TV show is uploaded in a batch to a streamin service, then I will tag spoilers for 1 month. I always try to tag manga spoilers until the anime reaches whatever plot point then they become spoilers
#I don’t know what to tag this - catch all tag for when I can’t think up the right tags or have limited time to tag something
#dramaz - for discourse, dramatic nonsense, wank, etc...
#my [insert creative media here] - place to put things like my fanfic or fanart or colorings or whatnot
#[insert blacklist term here] talk - an extra warning for something going on in the post. I don’t use cw because that’s a TV network and I don’t use tw because that’s Teen Wolf
trigger warning - there’s so much going on here I’m just going to let you know to read at your own risk
jsyk - if you’re curious why I’ve been absent for a few days or if I’m up to something spammy, this is the tag I’ll use
meme - This is the thing I put all memes under. Sometimes I have spcific meme tags like #text post meme. Sometimes I will tag fandoms in these posts and sometimes I will not since I don’t always know where something came from
I try to delineate historical events, country’s histories, science disciplines, etc... sometimes there’s too much to tease apart, which is why I use #I don’t know what to tag this
#cursing - for when I’m curisng. It’s just a single word tag because it’s one of the first recurring tags I developed for people’s blacklists
There are other recurring tags but these are probably the most frequent. Of course you can always ask me to tag stuff and I’ll honor reasonable requests. Like, for example, one time someone asked me to tag all my Doctor Who posts with #trigger warning, and I thought that was a bit unreasonable since a lot of my mutuals are also DW fans who would not appreciate all my innocuous posts ending up with a false #trigger warning tag so I compromised by always tagging DW stuff #doctor who instead because that I thought was much more reasonable since the person who wanted the trigger warning tag could just put doctor who into their blacklist of choice.
