Arctic Woolly Bear (Gynaephora groenlandica)

Habitat- Northern Canada; Greenland; Wrangel Island

Size (Weight/Length)- 70 mm

Diet- Leaves

Cool Facts- You might be surprised to hear that insects are able to thrive in environments that dip below -70 Celsius. The arctic woolly bear is a tiny moth that has mastered the freezing cold. These caterpillars live their life in constant motion as the growing season, when food is available, is only a maximum of 70 days. The caterpillars switch between feasting on leaves and basking in the sun, doing their best to grow in a race against the clock. When leaves start to shrivel and the snow returns, the arctic woolly bear weaves itself a silken blanket and shelters under the snow, essentially freezing itself solid. After a total of seven years, amounting to only 490 days outside of diapause, the arctic woolly bear cocoons and bursts out as a moth. For a period of 3-4 weeks, the moth flutters around to breed and lay eggs before passing away and the cycle continues through their offspring.

do you know the lore regarding woolly bear caterpillars? it’s said that they can predict how the approaching winter will be. using our friend here as an example, the black starting at the head (pointing upwards in the photo) predicts a harsh start; however, the long brown middle is indicative of milder months to follow.

suffice it to say that i am going to grab lots of hot chocolate, ingredients to make soup with, and maybe even a new book or two- recommendations welcome!

If woolly bears sense danger, they curl up in a fuzzy little ball like this

Pretty much you have to be careful with them, they are also delicate, its ok to touch them, just don't directly put your finger on the fuzzy creature, it can cause rash and it can get in your skin.

But these catapillars are important too! You see the orange ring around it in the middle?

The longer the ring, the more dangerous the weather is gonna be (I don't know how it's like that ahahsgsgdhfgdhgjvg)

its not unusual to find bugs around but these guys are really good at hiding, you should try catching one now that you have a chance

based on cockroaches, larvandoned is an egg shaped nymph which imitates a layette basket, i dont think i need to explain much about cockroaches as they are found worldwide

a small wooly bear caterpillar, while the name usually refers specifically to Pyrrharctia isabella there are many worms which grow urticating hairs for self defense and a few that also have a black and orange brownish coloration, funny enought Pyrrharctia isabellas hair or setae arent urticating but can cause dermatitis. Some believe they can tell when winter is coming and that the arrangement of their color tells how long winter will be.

It's that time of year again!!! I wrote an article on woolly bear caterpillars of various species for the Coast Weekend paper--including the answer to whether the Isabella tiger moth caterpillar (Pyrrharctia isabella) can predict the winter weather by the size of the rust band around its midsection.

Hi! My grandmother is currently raising a Wooly Bear that she found (she is a teacher and it crawled onto a student’s backpack). We haven’t named it Arnold and it has successfully become a pupa! Any advice for making sure the pupa stays healthy? I was thinking it probably needs misted semi-regularly so it doesn’t dry out but I’m not certain. This is coming from Ohio. Picture is attached (don’t worry, it had plenty of leafy goodies, it just seemed to like to sleep on the little pile of oats)

I love Arnold! Arnold would be happy under layers of paper towel and would definitely benefit from them being regularly at least a little bit damp. A pupa that is too dry can cause emergence issues later. I would recommend misting with distilled water rather than tap to avoid any harmful additives or mineral buildup from misting.
