If you enjoy female-fronted Rock and Metal...
I was having a conversation with some of my friends about women in alt music and realized many of them weren't exposed to the wealth of women's contributions to these genres, so I made these. In no way are these playlists comprehensive and they will continually be added to, but they are what I generally listen to and orbit around by subgenre. Recommendations are welcome if there's something you'd think I like and could be added! As of right now, there are four categories.
Punk, Alt, and Indie Rock covers the bases of the named categories without stepping into metal. Expect unpolished vocals, upbeat tempos, personal and political lyrics, and experimental sounds. Some of the artists on this playlist are...
The Gits, The Distillers, Hole, Joan Jett, Courtney Barnett, Screaming Females, Sleater-Kinney, and others.
Alternative, Progressive, and Symphonic brings us into the metal category. Expect more focus on singing over screaming, aspects of other genres, instrumental focus, with romantic and gothic overtones. On here...
Oceans of Slumber, Within Temptation, Evanescence, Reliqa, In This Moment, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and others.
Hardcore and Metalcore is full-throttle metal. Expect very heavy vocals, unrelenting drums and guitar, enraged and violent lyrics, and breakdowns. You'll see...
Otep, Once Human, Jinjer, Butcher Babies, Dying Wish, Sharptooth, Spiritbox, The Agonist, Infected Rain, and others.
Black metal, Doom, and Dark Atmospheric is simultaneously heavy and ethereal. Expect a musical storm and dirge-like intonations and wails, broken up by moments of calm beauty and trance-inducing atmosphere. I felt dark atmospheric deserved to be here due to how metal-adjacent and well blending it is. Some of the artists here are...
Myrkur, Asagraum, Sylvaine, King Woman, Frayle, Darkher, Chelsea Wolfe, Black Table, and others.
All musicians on these playlists are female-fronted and sometimes entirely female/single artist acts. Rock on freaky women🤘😎

Want some female-fronted/women-centric metal? I made a sampler version of my Women In Metal playlist! This one only includes a single song for each group/artist. (Although, some vocalists/musicians may be included more than once if they’re part of more than one project!) I hope that this version makes it easier to find bands that you’d like to see more of!

Men, like ants
Run past
The toppling bricks
And the face of wrath
Futile is the work of men
Metal, stone, and words will all bend

Artist: Thorr's Hammer
Album: Dommedagsnatt
Released: 1996
Country: USA
Genre: Doom metal
Track list:
Norge
Troll
Dommedagsnatt
Mellom Galgene
"Denne natten var dommedagsnatten, den siste natten de stolte guder og de faele beist i dette liv skulle se..."
Before Seattle musicians Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley formed their iconic drone band Sunn O))), they played in the very short lived death/doom metal group Thorr's Hammer. Helmed by Norwegian exchange student Runnhild Gammelsæter on vocals (who produced some of the most guttural, harsh singing to ever come out of a human larynx), the group was together for only six weeks before its dissolution upon Runnhild's return to Norway. During those six weeks they managed to create the punishingly heavy, doomy EP Dommedagsnatt (meaning "doomsday night" in Norwegian) with a lasting impact despite the band's short time together.
Anderson and O'Malley went on the form the sludge/doom band Burning Witch shortly after the breakup of Thorr's Hammer. Gammelsæter, on the other hand, obtained a PhD in cell biology though is still somewhat involved in the metal scene, contributing guest vocals on Sunn O)))'s 2003 album White1 as well as other projects.
Favorite tracks: Norge, Mellom Galgene

I always get such a kick out of it when male friends / co-workers ask me about what kind of music I like, especially when we've already been riffing about metal.
They're usually really surprised that I listen to primarily female fronted metal bands. I have been told by some of them that they prefer male fronted bands or are somehow otherwise put off by female fronted bands, which, if it's just not your sound, then fair enough. But if it's just because they're women (which I have been told before too 🙄), I find that incredibly closed minded and misogynistic.
And here's me like "Right, so I like gorgeous women screaming poetry and badass lyrics at me, you don't, and I'M THE WEIRD ONE!? Alrighty then 👍".
