My Best Friend’s Uncle | Part 5

Bruno and you had decided to be official and start dating a week after the wedding. Now you two had been together for about 6 months. You began to hang out with him and the Madrigals more often since then. That feeling of intimidation you once felt for them went away. You were getting pretty comfortable around them and it made you happy. Dolores was still getting settled in to the married life. Mariano joined the household and was now staying with her in her room.

Whenever you were over it was like everyone wanted to fight for your attention. Bruno was convinced that they loved you more than him. Of course you were pretty sure he was joking. You did usually try to divide your time equally with the family members. In the evenings was your favorite time because you spent your time alone with Bruno. The two of you would sit on the hill outside the casita and chat. Most of the time Bruno would have his little rat friends put a little show for you. It wasn’t much. It was just mainly Bruno making some really funny voices and using a makeshift stage he made. It was a bit goofy but you enjoyed it none the less. Once it would get darker the two of you would lay back on the grass and look at the stars. That alone was your favorite part. The constellations were all just so breathtaking.

Of course, Bruno being Bruno, he would make up new constellations. Your favorite was the one that was only three stars that made a line but he would swear up and down that it was a frying pan. You had no idea where on Earth he would get these ideas from but it was something you would admire about him. You enjoyed being under the stars with him. It felt like home to you. Actually no matter where you were, as long as you were with Bruno, you were home.

The two of you learned to avoid going into town as much as possible. Whenever you did go you could always hear people whispering. Some whispers were louder than others. Of course no one ever had anything good to say about Bruno. It got to a point where there were rumors being spread about Bruno somehow tricking you into believing you were supposed to marry him. It never truly bothered you. Sure it annoyed you that people were so ignorant and had no idea how his powers worked. It wasn't like he could make you fall in love with him. You're falling in love under your own free will.

What would be worst for you is when on your trips to and from the casita people sometimes would rush up to you swearing that they will get you help, then they would ask if you were okay as if you were an abused victim. You tried reassuring everyone that it was okay and that you were fine but no one ever cared or believed you. It got to a point where you ignored everyone who would walk up to you. It led to people talking badly about you and calling you a 'mal criada' but you didn't care you were tired. Everyone was going to think whatever they want so why bother acknowledging them and their ignorance?

****Meantime with Bruno*****

It was a regular afternoon in the casa de Madrigal. At least it was as normal as I could get for the family. You weren't going to be able to visit today because you were busy helping your childhood friend Elenore with her passion project. You promised to help her create a mural and you wanted to give her all of your attention since you hadn't spent a lot of time with her lately.

Since you were away Bruno wanted to take advantage and plan. He wanted to finally propose but he had no clue how to do it. The poor guy was pacing back and forth in the kitchen sort of mumbling to himself. Dolores peered her head into the kitchen. "Tio Bruno what is going on? I can't hear myself think with all of your inconsistent muttering." She said. He sort of jumped and looked at her. "Oh I'm sorry. I just...I'm planning on proposing to Y/N but I don't know-" Dolores quickly clapped her two index fingers together. He looked confused. "W-What is that? What are you doing?" He asked. "I'm clapping. This is how I clap." She responded. He blinked a few times as he processed this. "So you want to propose to her. Why are you upset?" She asked. He sighed. "I want to get everything right but I don't know how." He explained.

She thought for a bit. Then her face lit up. "I've got the perfect idea. You and Y/N love looking at the stars at night, right?" She asked. He seemed confused but nodded. "You should propose to her under the stars. All you have to do is find the perfect place." Dolores explained.

Bruno smiled and gave his niece a hug. "Thank you so much Dolores. You're a genius." He left casita and went into town to buy you a ring. Although he absolutely detested going into town at all he set his feelings aside because he felt that you deserved to have a beautiful ring.

He went into the local jewelry shop. Any kind of accessories and jewelry usually came from this shop. There was mostly simple crafted jewelry. All handcrafted. Any of the valuable stuff was a bit more pricey but Bruno did have some money he had saved up. Granted the money he had was from before he disappeared. When he used to go out in town to give people readings there was the very few of them who were extremely grateful and decided to tip him. He would always refuse but those few people insisted. Bruno had kept the money safe all this time.

He never cared for material things so he never had a real purpose to use it but the day he saw you in his original vision, he knew that he would use the money to get you a beautiful ring. Bruno waited all this time before he actually got to purchase the ring but the wait was worth it.

"Senor Madrigal. This is the first time I have seen you shop for anything here. What are you interested in getting?" Maria the shop owner asked.

He looked up at the woman. "Do you have any...rings?" He asked.

She raised an eyebrow. "For you?"

He shook his head. "For my girlfriend. I plan on proposing to her." He admitted.

Maria gave a smile. "That's very nice. Felicidades." She then turned around and opened a cabinet behind her. She grabbed a small tray from it then turned back around. Maria set the tray down on the counter that was separating the two of them.

On the tray were several simple rings that had different gems on them. He saw a silver ring with a diamond shaped design and an emerald in the center . It was a bit simple but it captured a hint of elegance and beauty that Bruno felt would be absolutely perfect for you. "This one." He pointed it out.

The woman looked at the ring and seemed to nod with approval. "I'm impressed. You have good taste senor Madrigal. "She smiled and picked it up. "I usually would charge more but I like your honesty and kindness to people despite their attitude towards you. 50 pesos." She said. He looked at her in surprise. A ring like that should have cost at least three times that price. “Wow. Thank you so much Senora.” Bruno was grateful to have one of the few good encounters he’s had with the townspeople today. He dug in his pocket for his bag of change. He gave her 65 pesos instead. “Keep the change.” He said and she smiled.

Maria grabbed a little box and opened it to put the ring in. She then handed him the box. “Good luck with your proposal.” He smiled and felt a sudden feeling of content and confidence. “Thanks, but I don’t need luck. It’s going to go well.” He replied and then left the shop.

He then went to go look for you. Bruno first went to check your house only to find that your mother was bored at home and alone. “Brunito! How good to see you!” She exclaimed and gave him a tight hug. She was always sweet and understanding towards him. It was your father that he had to worry about. However, it seemed that your father was out working on the family farm again. “Senora Y/L/N, have you seen Y/N?” She shook her head. “No she’s still out with Elenore. Why don’t you come inside and wait for her until she comes?” She asks. “Oh no, I wouldn’t w-” Your mother grabbed Bruno’s arm and began to pull him into the house. “Please there’s no trouble I can make you un tecito and we can sit down and talk. Oh it will be so much fun.” She said enthusiastically and shut the door behind them.

She had Bruno sit at the dining room table that was right next to the kitchen so they could talk as she made him the tea. “So how have you been Bruno?” She asked him. He didn’t know how to really answer that question. Mostly because he didn’t get asked that question a whole lot. “Um, I guess I have been okay.” He replied rubbing the back of his neck. “That’s good. I’m glad.” She replied. "You know you make my daughter very happy. I know you get a lot of the people in town who disapprove of your relationship with her but the two of you are perfect for each other." She stated and then put a tray in the oven.

"You really think so Senora?" He asked. Your mother looked over and nodded. "Claro que si. She has changed so much since she's been with you. I have never seen her this happy before. At least not for a long time." She said. She went back to check on the tea. "You know we moved to the Encanto a long time ago. About 10 years ago. It was after you disappeared. We came from Puerto Rico to try and get away from the conflicts that were beginning to rise. Y/N hadn't been the same since but with you around she's truly happy again." She had explained.

Bruno smiled to himself a bit. "Well...I'm glad you feel that way because I'm planning on proposing to her tonight." He announced. Your mother stopped everything instantly so she could look at him. "¡¿En serio?!" She asked with much enthusiasm. Bruno nodded and she ran to give him a hug. "Ay que bueno. I'm so happy." Bruno hugged her back. "Do you have a ring yet?" She asked. He nodded and pulled the ring box out so she could see it. She looked at it and gasped. "Que hermoso. She's going to love it." He smiled and put the ring away again. "I'm glad you think so." He stated. Bruno shifted in place a bit. "Do you think that...Senor Y/L/N will approve? It would be nice to get his blessing too."

Your mother seemed unsure. "My husband is a very tough man sometimes. I know he acts very cold towards you but that's only because he is protective of Y/N. She is the baby.” She stated and walked back into the kitchen. “But, I’ll be honest I’m not sure. At the end of the day we all know you two are meant to get married, he can’t stop you.” Bruno nodded. “You are a good man. I appreciate you wanting to get his approval.” Your mother said. Bruno gave a slight smile. His smile went away as soon as your father walked into the house. "What are you doing here?" Your father asked.

Bruno soon became a ball of nerves and was completely unsure of what to say. "He came to propose to Y/N!" Your mother exclaimed coming back out of the kitchen. Your father's eyes narrowed as he looked at Bruno. "Without my blessing?" He asked. Bruno quickly shook his head. "No of course not. I was hoping to get your blessing Senor Y/L/N." He stated. "So are you no longer wanting my blessing?" Your father crossed his arms. Bruno began to panic. "N-No! Of course I still do. I would be honered to receive your blessing to marry your daughter." He bowed his head down a little. "She's young enough to be your daughter. You understand why I'm having a hard time with this,right?" Bruno continued to look down and nodded.

Your mother groaned. "Mi amor, por favor dejalo. He loves her and makes her happier than she has ever been. Isn't that enough?" She asked. "But he-" Your father began but was cut off. "You know he didn't have to ask for your blessing. He did it because he felt it was the right thing to do. Now you know just as much as everyone else that he is meant to marry Y/N. So no matter what you say won't matter." Your mother stated. In turn your father had scoffed. "Fine. I guess it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. I guess you really do make her happy." He then sighed. "You have my blessing." He finally finished.

Bruno beamed and ran to give your father a huge hug. "Thank you senor Y/L/N! I promise you won't regret this." He exclaimed enthusiasticlly. Your father layed stiff in his arms. "I'm already starting to." Your father muttered under his breath. Bruno broke away from the hug.

A timer dinged from the kitchen all of a sudden. "Ooo just in time." Your mom opened the oven door and pulled out the pan that was inside. A sweet aroma filled the air. "These are Y/N's favorite. Would you like to try one once they have cooled down,Bruno?" Your mom asked. Bruno's curiosity had been peeked. "What are they?" He asked. "They're called quesitos. They are a common desert from where we're from." She explained. Bruno nodded. "Sure."

After a few minutes your mother handed him a plate with a quesito on it. He took a bite of it and instantly fell in love with the sweet taste mixed with the slight tang of the cream cheese filling. "This is delicious." Your mother smiled widely. "I'm glad you like them." Bruno nodded. "I love them."

The door opened again and it was finally you who had arrived home. "Bruno? What are you doing here? I told you I was gonna be gone all day." You stated. Bruno had gotten up to give you a hug and a kiss hello. "I know but I wanted to take you out for a walk as soon as you got home." He explained. "Don't you prefer to wait for tomorrow...you know when I have energy?" Bruno huffed. He really didn't want to prematurely reveal his true intentions of proposing to you, but you were not making it easy on him. "I just missed you so much I couldn't help myself." He flashed you the best puppy dog eyes that he could muster. You sighed. "Alright fine. I will join you on a walk." You stated and sniffed the air.

It was then that you finally realized that your house was filled with a familiar sweet aroma. "Mami did you bake quesitos?" You asked. Your mom's head popped out from the kitchen. "Si! I gave one to Bruno to try it and he loved it!" She exclaimed enthusiastically.

You walked over to your parents who were both in the kitchen. You gave them both a hug as a greeting. "Would you like one before you and Bruno leave?" She asked. You nodded and grabbed one. You took a bite and smiled. "Delicious as always. Gracias Mami." You said. She smiled at you and then began to lightly pushed you out of the kitchen. "Now the both of you can go ahead and leave. You've been away from each other all day. Go." She shooed you off. You were a bit confused by her rush to ship you off but you just shrugged it off and left your house with Bruno.

"So." You looked at Bruno and smiled. "Mi amor. Where do you plan on taking me?" You asked. Bruno gave you a shy smile. "I want to show you this river, right outside of the Encanto." He stated and began walking towards the oitskirts of the village. You furrowed your eyebrows in confusion. "Why a river?" You asked him as you began to follow behind. "I'll tell you when we get there."

After a good ten minute walk of you just talking about your day and Bruno intently listening to you, you finally arrived to the said river. "Its beautiful Bruno." You stated as your head had been turning to look at the view in every direction. "It is. Its a beautiful place but with a sad history." He stated. "This was where my mother...where we, lost our father. He sacrificed himself for all of us. My mother's love and grief for him birthed us the miracle of the Encanto. This is also where, with Mirabel's help, she realized that she was holding on to tight to us and that we needed to rebuild our family's foundation." He explained. "This is a very important place then." You stated and he nodded. "Two miracles happened here before. So I figured why not a third one?" He asked.

Your head turned to look at him. "Huh?" You were confused by what he meant. 'A third one.' Next thing you knew Bruno had gotten down on one knee and pulled out a small ring box and opened it. Your hands had covered your mouth in surprise as you let out a light gasp.

"Y/N, I'm usually not the greatest with my words. And I-" He began. "Yes." You stated a bit enthuastically. "Sorry." He let out a chuckle. "Well we had an interesting journey before we got here. Especially sinc-" He continued. "Yes." You said again. He started laughing now. "Y/N, I love you, but let me finish." You laughed now. "Sorry, I'm just too excited." Bruno cleared his throat and continued. "We both knew this day was going to eventually come and I have been looking forward to this ever since I had my first vision of you. So Y/N, will you marr-" You jumped up and down. "Yes! Yes! Yes!" Bruno got back up and was just laughing. He gave you a big hug. Bruno separated from you and pulled the ring out the box to place it on your finger. It was slightly loose but other then that the ring was perfect. You gave Bruno a kiss and smiled. "I love you so much Bruno Madrigal."
