Clockwork Headcanons
PT.01
Natalie Ouellettes past, upbringing, pre-murder headcanons.
CW: mentions of sexual abuse (I go into light detail about the abuse and the abusers mindset), domestic violence, gore, trauma, human experimentation
<NOTE> Same thing as the Ticci Toby headcanons, its a bit of a rewrite and I tried to keep the story realistic. Its not proofread so ignore typos and grammatical errors. Also again as a major warning, I went into some detail about Clockworks sexual trauma with her brother as I feel it does play a major part to her character and the reason why she developed the way she did. I have trigger warnings on the parts so you can skip it. Its very long because I have a lot of thoughts about her character. Enjoy 🔥
BIOGRAPHY .
PATIENT NAME: Natalie Ouellette
BIRTHDATE: November 6th, 1996
AGE: Currently 18 years old
HC/EC: Brown hair, green eyes
ETHNICITY: White Canadian
BIRTHPLACE: Windsor, Ontario
FAMILY: Mary-Beth Ouellette (mother), David Ouellette (father), Lucas Ouellette (brother)
DIAGNOSIS: Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, suspected/untreated Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)
PIGTAILS .
Natalie grew up in a small trailer park. Her family was dirt broke, her father would blow all their money on booze and gambling
The financial situation in her household contributed significantly to her parents stress and fighting. Rarely was there ever a moment of peace
She would often make careless mistakes as any young child would like wetting the bed, drawing on walls, accidentally breaking things
And every time she made a mistake, she wasn’t simply taught how to do better, she was berated and ruthlessly beat by her father
Her childhood was unstable, to say the least. Natalies parents were more like enemies than they were caregivers.
She spent her peak developmental years being severely neglected and made to feel small and powerless.
At home she would spend her time alone in her room to hide away from the fighting between her parents or the random rants her drunken father would go on
She would get into the habit of running away just to spend some quiet time at the park by her house, anything to escape the chaos of her everyday life
At such a young age she didn’t know why she was so angry at the world. And at such a young age she would act out for attention and struggle with morals, empathy and societal norms as a result of never being taught any better
Her and her brother were severely emotionally neglected and grew up very poor, barely having food to eat or clean clothes to wear. This resulted to her being ostracized from her peers early on
DADDYS GIRL .
David Ouellette was a lazy, drunk, mean old man. He spent his life as a bully and would pick on anyone who challenged his authority, even his own children
He wasn’t afraid to use fear and violence to make his family obey. The man didn’t care who he hurt as long as he got his way
And this man regretted having children every single day of his life. He viewed them as burdens, a curse, and something he wasted his life on.
This included Natalie, who developed oppositional behavioural issues early on in defiance to her fathers abuse
Natalie had a mouth on her. She would talk back, make sarcastic or snarky remarks, boss other kids around. She would fight tooth and nail against her father for a sliver of power in her otherwise powerless life
And David hated being talked down to by a cocky brat like her. So over the years David would repeatedly beat his daughter into shape by grabbing her, hitting her with objects, slapping her, pushing and any other means to his ends of regaining control
Despite this strained relationship where the two would constantly fight for power, Natalie was a daddys girl. They developed a strange, twisted understanding in each other
David worked as a local trucker, but he ran a side hustle of repairing clocks. The man was a piece of shit and honestly a bit dumb when it came to booksmarts but he was good with his hands and a tinkerer
Her father was a classic trailer trash hick. He loved and owned guns, and would sometimes take his children out hunting. The only praise and a semblance of affection Natalie would receive from her father was when she was taking the life of another living being
MOMMY ISSUES .
Natalies mother was an unstable woman. She was very passive-aggressive and unpredictable in her parenting going from caring to cold in an instant
She was very controlling over her children, often resorting to berating and insulting Natalie to get her to act how she wanted
Mary-Beth spent her life chasing the teenage dream she never got when she was younger, and tried to project through her daughter
When she was a young child, Natalie learned quickly that her mother didn’t care about anybody but herself. Mary-Beth was a bitter woman, always playing the victim, and would die before ever admitting she was wrong
Even though her relationship with her father was bad, the girls relationship with her mother was worse. Davids abuse was in response to his children acting out of line, meanwhile her mother was unnecessarily critical, argumentative, and emotional
On multiple occasions her mother would leave the house in a dramatic fit as if she desired to be chased after. The woman would act out like a child and expect everyone to cater to her
And Natalie was never good enough for Mary-Beth. She wasn’t polite enough, smart enough, skinny enough. There was absolutely no pleasing her mother.
BLOOD BROTHER . (TW SEXUAL ABUSE MENTS)
The only person Natalie relied on in her life was her brother, Lucas. He was 4 and a half years older than her but it was that sort of quiet understanding between two children in such a hostile household
Despite their arguments and lack of true bond, the young girl felt safe with her older brother and always tried to impress him. All she wanted was the approval of some dominant figure in her life, and she certainly wasn’t getting it from her parents
Lucas was a strange boy. He was the anxious type who harboured a lot of internalized anger, especially towards his mother.
He was an outcast at school and similarly to his sister, he felt powerless in his life. The boy picked up on his mothers passive-aggressive traits and his fathers entitlement
As he grew and developed, so did his hunger for control and power. He wanted to degrade, assault, and dominate something in his life to make up for the lack of confidence
When Natalie was 9 years old, Lucas would begin to sexually abuse her.
The one person in her life that understood and felt the same pain she did turned on her. She was scared, ashamed, confused.
Repeatedly Lucas would approach his sister and assault her in various ways with little to no regard of the consequences or moral implications. He was desperate and even though it hurt her, it felt good to him.
BETRAYAL . (TW SEXUAL ABUSE MENTS)
Natalie was too young to even know what was happening to her, all she knew was that it felt bad and she felt violated. She knew something was wrong.
Soon enough, the girl felt she had no choice but to confide in her peers. One day at recess she approached a girl named Mia and her friends, a group of girls Natalie wasn’t really friends with but was acquainted enough to talk to
And from there she told them everything as best as she could, even if she got choked up and didn’t make much sense. The girl barely even made sense of it herself.
It felt lighter to get it off her chest, maybe if she could gain the courage to tell her parents the abuse would stop. Maybe everything was going to work out.
But the next day Natalie woke up to messages on sites like Facebook and MySpace. Degrading comments about her being an incest freak, a whore, gross, disgusting, weird, used. Who does that with their brother?
The bullying and degradation from her peers who now saw her as a disgusting weirdo would follow her up until high school
And for four years she would come home from school and be abused in the worst, most violating way by her own kin. And for four years she kept everything inside of her. She just kept quiet and didn’t dare to tell a soul ever again.
Eventually, she gained the courage to tell Lucas no, and firmly reject his advances. After that she was finally free, as much as a girl drowning in her own household could be.
DEAD GIRL .
In high school, Natalie did well for herself. Her grades were good, she calmed down a ton, and she didn’t bother making close friends but she got herself a boyfriend named Chris
Chris was a nice boy, but he came from a good, well-off family. He wasn’t the type to even begin to understand the things Natalie thought or had been through.
Throughout the years, Natalie had grown fond of things of the morbid nature. She would find herself drawing gorey images depicting murder, weapons, decomposing corpses, and other unsettling themes
This wouldn’t have been as bad if it wasn’t tied to the girl who was drawing it. Most people saw Natalie as a weird, disturbed girl and it was rather uncomfortable to watch a girl like her draw all these macabre things
On the outside she was quiet and asocial with a bit of an attitude. She was snarky and rough around the edges, but all she wanted for herself was to get a proper education and have a good life for herself. All she wanted was the kind of family Chris had
Deeper inside of her, Natalie was a very angry girl who hated the world. She hated her family, her life, she resented people who had it better than her.
There was so much bubbling inside that she just pushed down. She was never going to let herself crumble. She was never going to be weak.
This reflected negatively on her life which led to the girl growing into her behavioural issues. Natalie would talk back to authority figures in her life and god forbid anyone try to tell her what to do. She was rebellious to a fault
Her sleep schedule was barely existent as she would find herself staying up until the sunrise to finish assignments, scroll through the internet, or binge watch horror movies regularly
And this lack of sleep only contributed to her horrible attitude. The girl would get into fights at home, storm out, get into fights with her peers or her boyfriend, and go back home to start all over again
TIME .
Natalie had a strange relationship with the concept of time. It always seemed to be against her.
A part of her feared how little time she felt she had. It was like a race against the inevitable, it was going to catch up to her eventually. She couldn’t outrun time itself
It wasn’t long until there was something of obsession with the topic in Natalies life. Even clocks on the wall drove her insane
She felt as though she was stuck in a time loop of living the same day over and over. Different day on the calendar, but same life
Even her fathers clocks that littered her dirty, small, mobile home mocked her. Laughing at how powerless she was
The one thing in her life she truly could never control was the vicious cycle of living through her miserable days again and again
Wake up at 6am, school at 8am, go back home to the abuse at 4pm, fall asleep at 3am
Every. Single. Day.
Natalie hated her life more than anything. She wanted out more than anything. But she wasn’t going to be so weak as to self-harm or commit suicide. She was strong enough to take control
She just kept trying to be in control of something that couldn’t be controlled
STITCHES .
One day after school, Natalies boyfriend broke up with her.
She should’ve expected it, but she didn’t.
Chris was always nice to her, he really did try his best. But he just couldn’t even begin to understand her, and she couldn’t even begin to explain.
He told her that her outbursts were too much for him. She would snap at him and cause fights for such small reasons, everything set her off. And when he tried to talk it through with her, she’d shut down on him
Natalie never told him about the abuse, the trauma, or any of her struggles. She was drowning and never trusted a single hand reaching out to help
Chris made comments towards her art and mindset, saying it creeped him out and that she needed to seek professional help
Of course he didn’t understand. Nobody understood Natalie. The whole wide world was against her
And now the one person she actually liked and could see herself caring for turned on her and left her just like everyone else in her life
And another good thing in her life was lost to the hands of time
BORDERLINE .
For such a strong girl like Natalie, a stupid high school breakup shouldn’t have meant as much as it did
It shouldn’t have ruined her
But it did, and she was a mess
All she could think about was how much she lost. She was so desperate for control she completely lost it
And now her moods were at an all time low, her impulsivity skyrocketed and so did her anger
How fucking dare he do that to her
Natalie would start acting out, getting into fights with her parents, and her grades began to drop. Her entire life was slipping away through the cracks in between her fingers and there was nothing she could do but watch it crumble underneath her feet
It was like watching a car accident. You could see the girl spiral, you could see her crash and burn, but there was nothing you could do but sit back and watch
She didn’t care one bit. After so long of trying so hard to run from it all, she finally had nothing left to lose
So she picked up a few bad habits here and there. She would fight girls behind the school and buy cigarettes off of sketchy junkies with her parents money
Natalie started to speak up more and everything that came out of that girls mouth was trashy. She would make offensive comments and pick on people for being “so damn sensitive”
In reality, she just wanted to be seen. She wanted someone to catch her from falling so far deep into destruction and give her the attention and support she never had
But everyone found her annoying or just something to laugh at. Natalie wasn’t enjoyable to be around in the slightest
She started stealing booze from her parents and going off and getting drunk at the park near her house. The girl quickly developed a drinking problem that worsened her attitude even more
Natalie started crossing lines that shouldn’t have been crossed, and started to gain the dangerous knowledge that she could do all these awful things and the world wouldn’t come to an end
She was on top. She was powerful. And nobody was going to fuck with her again
INFIRMARY .
One night she got into a physical fight with her brother, things were broken, fists were thrown, insults were tossed back and forth
The fight had gone too far and she ended up injuring her left eye so badly she had to be taken to the emergency room
Nobody stayed by Natalies side in that hospital. She had to undergo surgery in order to remove the eye due to the damage. And neither her parents nor her brother cared enough to stay
Now around this time, the government was developed a chemical weapon known as “Liquid Hate” or “methcyclopyroxene oxydenate” if we’re going to get scientific
And if you know anything about the government, they just love to run illegal human experimentation programs on unassuming people who really wouldn’t be looked for if they went missing or worse
Natalie fell victim to a testing of an early prototype of liquid hate. During her surgery she was tied down and injected a small dosage of this chemical
Soon, she woke up and felt a jolt of adrenaline stronger than anything she’d ever felt before. It felt like her body was so hot she was going to explode, she felt jittery and like a surge of overwhelming energy soared through every cell that made up her being
And she felt so consumed by rage
Her anger was righteous and she was wielding it like an archangels sword. It was something so biblically primal when she escaped her restraints and ripped the nearest doctor apart with her own two hands
This quick blinding rush subdued slightly and she came to her senses as she caught her breath and bolted right out of the hospital in fear and out into the rainy night
The effects weren’t exactly as blinding as before but god knows they were still overtaking her senses. And when she walked down the street in that gentle, cold, rain only one thought was on her mind
Where the fuck was her family when she needed them the most?
TICK TOCK .
Now here was this angry, drugged up girl standing outside the dark house where she spent years of abuse and torment
And the blood on her hands was dripping like sin
When her mother answered the front door and saw the monster her own daughter had become, there was a part in the woman that felt as though she was looking at what she could’ve become
And like smashing a mirror, Natalie took the life of her own mother. She strangled her, brutally stabbed her with a kitchen knife and ripped open her ribcage with feral strength
As Natalie taunted the one who carried her for 9 months and brought her into the sick and cruel world she inhabited, she felt the rabid words fall off her mouth as if they had been begging to escape for years
Next was her father, who had slept through the death of his wife in a drunken slumber. The house stunk of alcohol - such a familiar smell. It made her sick to her stomach.
She snuck into her parents bedroom and took a handgun out of the bedstand drawer, shoving the barrel of the gun in her fathers booze-coated mouth and watched the fear filled his eyes as he woke up. Her finger teased the trigger as she whispered a quiet “your time is up, daddy” and blew his brains out onto the wall
This was another line Natalie crossed, another realization of her own capabilities only enhanced by the chemically induced beast-like rage. Nothing was stopping her. This was her divine right, she was in control now
And finally, she moved onto her brother who was alerted by the sound of a gunshot and walked in on his sister standing over their fathers dead corpse, blood staining her hands and soaking her white hospital gown
Lucas, like his sister, was a quiet boy who kept to himself for the most part. But like his sister, he had so much anger boiling inside of him and he was a fighter
And so the two fought once more, Lucas physically overpowered his sister for just a moment before something inside of her broke like a dam and the flood came crashing through
Natalie gained the upper hand as the fight was brought into Lucas’s bedroom, the place where her brother would abuse her for years
The overwhelming pain of the memories flooding in threw Natalie into a panicked fit as she threw her brother to the ground, ignoring his screams and berating
She climbed on top of him and incapacitated him by stabbing him several times in the abdomen, throat, and face. The girl finished her brother off by gutting him and spent her time mutilating his body like an animalistic rampage
Everything she had been bottling up finally exploded out of her and the girl showed no mercy that night
EMBERS .
Natalie stood in the bathroom, staring at herself in the mirror
She looked at the gaping hole where her left eye once was for what felt like eternity
Time came to a complete stop in that moment, it was all in the bloody palm of her hands
The only sound that filled the room was the viscous sound of her fathers pocket watch ticking softly as it rested on the messy bathroom counter
For nearly an hour she stood there heavily dissociated, zoning out of reality as she did nothing but stare at the hands of the clock moving rhythmically
Natalie soon snapped out of her dazed trance and slowly moved her dark crimson stained hand over to the pocket watch
And slowly she look a deep breath in as she brutally shoved the small clock into her empty eye socket, zoning out from the sharp pain of her body reacting to the foreign object
Now time was apart of her, and she was time itself. The girl became what she feared the most and broke the cycle she lives through over and over with her own two hands. She was no longer going to be a victim to the hands of time, she was now going to be the destroyer of it
As she exited the cold bathroom, she walked down the hallway of her small home she spent so much time in. There was no more yelling from her father, comments from her mother, fear from her brother
Natalie was all that was left
The girl entered her bedroom for the last time, changed into regular clothes and grabbed her stuffed giraffe shes had since she was a young child, named Jaffy
Jaffy had been with her through it all. She found comfort in the little giraffe, and it was the last piece of herself she had left
She walked into the kitchen with the stuffed animal and turned her gas-stove on max before laying a gentle kiss on Jaffys head and placing it onto the stovetop
Not once did she look back to the fire overtaking the giraffe as she walked out of that house, letting it become victim to the flames that would soon engulf the home
Natalie Ouellette died in that house, burning to death alongside her family in the fire
And only Clockwork walked out

Bro I'm so sorry if you're getting tired of me showing up in your inbox, I just have random thoughts and questions that I have to share. Still, sorry :(
Okay, actual reason why I'm here is that I have some questions regarding CDTA and RR: 1.) For both CDTA and RR, where do they take place (currently)? // 2.) Since CDTA is your own project, things like the TV/mirror ban don't exist, so Isaac legally owns a computer along with Sarah + Peter? // 3.) When does CDTA and RR take place (like afterwards when everything is done)? // 4.) What are their canon nationalities/heights for no particular reason? // 5.) Can I pretty please add Delilah and her buddy (also where are they living lol)??
Bye bye now, this might be the last thing you'll get in your inbox for a week if my brain decides to function properly
there's no need to apologize! even if i may not answer right away, im always down to chat about blorbos and ocs ❤
anyway, to answer the questions
at the most recent point in both stories, the CDTA cast (including delilah and sam) lives in Rochester, New York, and Peter and Sarah live in rural farm country in Ohio while the cult members are still in Detroit, Michigan (the ohio location is kinda kept vague on purpose)
indeed! so far the only legal restrictions devils have caused are increased drug regulation (particulary regarding psychedelics) and most paranormal equipment being banned (though this isn't enforced very well lol)
CDTA at it's most recent point in the timeline is summer 2011 (still working out exact months), while rotten roots' most recent point is October 1983.
since delilah and sam are just canon characters in CDTA now, you absolutely can include them!
almost everyone in both cdta and rotten roots are american, save for the supernatural entities like luce, cairyx, and michael, as well as elijah and cassandra who are canadian. here's all the heights:
Rotten Roots:
sarah - 5'7
peter - 5'11
officer wong - 5'5
norman - 6'2
steve - 6ft
isabelle - 5'2
cut down the altar!
isaac - 5'11
joshua - 6'3
jessie - 5'9
madeline - 5'4
leah - 6ft
sam - 6'5
delilah - 5'3
luce - 10ft
cairyx - 7ft in spider alien form, 6ft in human form
elijah - 6'1
cassandra - 5'6

‘Baking Yesteryear’ cookbook takes a stroll down memory lane
Check out my latest column
Tumblr media
Christmas Crack, from the 1970s chapter, is a confection that longs to sit patiently in a glass jar, eager to offer yet another reason for joy during the season. Dylan indulges here. (Courtesy of Lauren Jones)
‘Tis the season for indulging in our favorite foods, especially decadent desserts, and confections. It’s the time families gather in the kitchen baking their favorite recipes, many handed down through the generations.
These vintage recipes, often written on index cards, tattered and stained from years of use, provoke warm memories of baking with loved ones when we were young. What better way to embrace the season and bring warmth, nostalgia, joy and togetherness to a home. Holiday baking brings back fond memories of simpler and calmer times. It is an escape as well as a connection to the past.
One of the top cookbook titles this year is “Baking Yesteryear: The Best Recipes from the 1900’s to the 1980’s,” by B. Dylan Hollis (2023, DK, a division of Penguin Random House LLC, $32). Hollis’ book will take you down memory lane. The chapters are broken down by decade, beginning with the 1900s and ending with the 1980s.
Hollis shares his favorites from each decade.
1900s: Food for the Gods
1910s: Chocolate Potato Cake
1920s: Ricciarelli
1930s: Whipped Cream Cake
1940s: Applesauce Graham Cracker Torte
1950s: Kiskadee Fantasy
1960s: Haystacks
1970s: Christmas Crack
1980s: The Buster
The final chapter “Worst of the Worst,” is where he writes, “these creations are the kind that make you ponder the sobriety of the recipe developer.” You might be thinking, why were these recipes included? He writes, “I resolved to do so, since the bad experiences of what I do play such a big part in my overall journey of exploring cooking past, and not including them would ignore the fact that some bona fide, published recipes are simply bad — horrendous bad.”
So, what are a few of the recipes included here? Pickle Cheesecake, jellied meatloaf and SpaghettiOs Jell-O Ring (watch these videos at your own risk! https://bit.ly/3Np0cY6 https://bit.ly/48dPage). If you are a fan of these recipes, don’t fret, food is personal, like fashion.
The headnotes to each recipe are intriguing … some history with a good measure of humor as you will see in the recipes shared below.
I had the opportunity to interview Hollis, a larger-than-life personality. The conversation could have gone on and on. Both of us share an interest in vintage cookbooks. I asked how his delight in vintage recipes came about. From a career as a jazz pianist, I thought it was quite a diversion to becoming a baker. Well, he is not just a baker, he is a social media phenomenon with millions of followers patiently (or perhaps impatiently) waiting for his next video showcasing his unique style and humor while cooking. He said it was happenstance.
“During the pandemic I had too much time on my hands and the quarantine caused boredom,” he said.
Hollis always collected old things, including vintage cookbooks. They came in handy to fill the time. One day he looked through a 1912 Canadian cookbook and came across a recipe for pork cake.
“I just stared at it,” he said.
His experiment making the cake on video went viral and the rest is history.
Perhaps these recipes will become part of your holiday repertoire. As Hollis writes in the conclusion of his book, “The experience of putting together Baking Yesterday for you was a pleasure unmatched. Not only as an opportunity to breathe new life into dishes that once held the hearts of those in the old world, but as a celebration of the fact that while the cakes might change, the joys of baking remain timeless. … I sincerely hope that Baking Yesteryear serves you well, and offers you the opportunity to taste just a sliver of the past’s ingenuity, and the magic that I feel comes with it.”

Admiral’s Gingerbread, from the 1910s, is a surprisingly soft, light, and buttery ginger loaf, setting itself apart from traditional dense, dark gingerbreads of yuletide. (Courtesy of Kelley Jordan-Schuyler)
Admiral’s Gingerbread (1910s chapter)
The headnote says, “This is a most peculiar variety of gingerbread, and its bizarre method of preparation seems to have been quite popular along the East Coast cities of the United States in the early 1910s under names like New York Gingerbread and Providence Gingerbread. Bakers will notice that it has an impressively backwards order of operation, but despite this (or because of it), the result is surprisingly soft, light, and buttery ginger loaf, setting itself apart from traditional dense, dark gingerbreads of yuletide.”
9 x 5-inch loaf quick bread
1 cup (225g) butter, softened
1½ cups (210g) all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons ground ginger
3 tablespoons molasses or treacle
Yolks of 5 large eggs, reserve whites
½ teaspoon salt
1½ cups (180g) powdered sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
In a large bowl, beat the butter until smooth and light. Gradually beat in the flour, ginger, and molasses. Beat until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and the salt. Gradually whisk in the powdered sugar.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, or in a large bowl with which an electric hand mixer is to be used, beat the reserved egg whites to stiff peaks. Beat in the baking powder.
Mix the egg yolk mixture into the creamed mixture, before adding the egg white mixture. Beat thoroughly.
Turn into the prepared pan and bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center can be removed cleanly.
Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Christmas Crack (1970s chapter)
The headnote says, “I’ve never before beheld such a perfect meeting of caramel, chocolate, and salty crunch as I did the day I made Christmas Crack. I remember it vividly and has since become my #1 homemade candy. Beginning this recipe by counting and arranging soda crackers in a grid may seem unorthodox, but since the 1970s the making of crack has become a popular yuletide activity for families in the United States…And, just as stockings and candle-glow punctuate the quiet midwinter home, Christmas Crack longs to sit patiently in a glass jar, eager to offer yet another reason for joy during the season.”
40 saltine crackers
1 cup (225g) butter, softened
1 cup (220g) packed light brown sugar
2 cups (340g) semisweet, or milk chocolate chips (one 12oz bag)
Chopped nuts, peppermint candy pieces, M&M’s candies, chocolate bar pieces, or sprinkles, for topping
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Line a large baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Arrange a grid of saltine crackers in five rows of eight on the baking sheet. The crackers should all be touching.
Vertically crease the sides of the aluminum foil to create a dam that borders the crackers. In a medium saucepan over high heat, combine the butter and the brown sugar, stirring occasionally until it reaches a boil.
Once the mixture reaches a full boil, boil for 5 minutes without stirring.
Carefully pour the mixture evenly over the saltine crackers. The foil dam will prevent the syrup from spilling .Immediately bake for 7 minutes.
Remove from the oven and quickly sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot crackers. Allow to sit for 2 minutes, or until the chips appear glossy, indicating they have melted.
Carefully spread the melted chips in a thin, even layer over the crackers.
While the chocolate is still hot, sprinkle on any desired toppings. Chopped walnuts or green and red sprinkles are my favorite options to use.

Midnight Mallowmalt Cake from the 1960s has a deep chocolate, marshmallow sweetness, and hints of malt and sour cream tartness. With a snowy blanket of marshmallows and boiled frosting, it is a winner if there’s ever been one. (Courtesy of Kelley Jordan-Schuyler)
Midnight Mallowmalt Cake (1960s chapter)
Makes two 9-inch layers
The headnote says, “Chocolate cakes are an entire world waiting to be explored, and this 1960s example is just as badass as its name. With deep chocolate, marshmallow sweetness, and hints of malt and sour cream tartness, all needed a snowy blanket of marshmallows and boiled frosting, it is a winner if there’s ever been one.”
CAKE
18 marshmallows, or 2 1/3 cups mini marshmallows (¼ lb, 113g)
4 ounces (113g) bittersweet chocolate
¾ cup (180ml) boiling water
3 large eggs
1¼ cups (250g) granulated sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1½ cups (375g) sour cream
2¼ cups (350g) all-purpose flour
¼ cup (36g) malted milk powder
1½ teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
FROSTING
Whites of 2 large eggs
¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
1⁄3 cup (80ml) light corn syrup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mini marshmallows, for garnish
Cake Method
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 9-inch cake pans.
Melt together the marshmallows and the chocolate in a double boiler.
Add in the boiling water and beat the mixture smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, sugar, and vanilla until thick and foamy. Blend in the sour cream and the cooled chocolate mixture.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, malted milk powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add to the wet ingredients. Mix until well combined.
Turn into the prepared pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center can be removed cleanly. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Frosting Method
In a large bowl that can be placed atop a double boiler, combine the egg whites, sugar, corn syrup, and vinegar.
Over boiling water, beat the mixture with an electric hand mixer until it thickens and soft peaks form. Remove from heat and beat in the vanilla.
Away from the heat, continue beating until the frosting has cooled and is thick enough to spread onto the cake. This will take some time, about 5 to 6 minutes.
Spread a suitable amount of frosting evenly atop the first cake. Invert the second cake atop the filling to form the second layer.
Frost the assembled cake with the remaining frosting. Decorate the top of the cake with marshmallows.

Oh! Can I ask 3? Dream place to live, any body modifications including scars, and random fact ♥️
Of course <3
Dream place to live would be somewhere on the Mediterranean coast actually. I talked about how i headcanon him as having Italian heritage, and while he really doesn't glady think about his family or his past, he sometimes wonders what could have been if his mother's side of his family never moved to Canada. He think it would be nice, having a romanticized view of the place. He would love to live somewhere where its always warm, as opposed to the Canadian harsh winters. He probably wouldn't have a constant cold then lmao. Though he doesn't realize he would be sweating even more than he already does there, and then he would be complaining constantly about the heat. He's a fickle guy. This dream can't really become a reality either, because I don't think he could handle traveling on a plane, especially a trans-atlantic flight. I don't think they would even let him on a plane. Dude probably doesn't even have a passport :<
He doesn't have any body piercings or tattoos, and he would never get them, as he has a fear of needles. And for a while he was actually against them, when he first found out about them. He couldn't understand why anyone would subject themselves to that, and he was kinda judgmental about them lmao. But he came around eventually... Though some of the more extreme body mods still freak him out.
As for scars... girl there is more than what can be mentioned. None of them on his face, somehow, but definetly on his back, arms and legs. My headcanon is both of his parents were very much abusive in every way possible, and both weren't shy to use physical harm as punishment. The scars on his back stand as a testament. Other then that, he also has scars on his arms legs from restraining, both from his parents and from mental hospitals from his youth. Some of the injuries he aquiered from the wards were so sever that they required stitches. These were caused either by other patients or from staff. There's also some self harm scars, and scars from infected wounds from scratching himself too hard...
As for random fact, something a bit lighter.... while living in the sorority house he liked to steal the girls clothing, not only for... jerking off reasons, but he also liked to try them on. He likes feeling pretty. He also likes their smell, how clean they are as opposed to how dirty and filthy he thinks he is. But he also likes wearing skirts, he likes how swooshy they are. Though he never would admit it, and he does feel shame for it after the fact, feeling like a man shouldn't dress in skirts. Though when he gets older he mellows out about this as well... a lot actually lmao.

Hello! This is a very random question-but I guess dogblr can be like that-feel free to ignore this ask 😅
I saw your post about Sigurd’s buff muscles and had a slight epiphany.
I have a working line Lab (like very working-the line is quite split in the UK) and his gait is very different to most of the labs I see. Is that what I’m seeing? The difference between a fit weight dog bred to work and who does work as an assistance dog (including guide work literally pulling me along) vs an overweight show type plodding along?
Skye is my first ever dog so I’m still figuring out what ‘looks normal’ on a dog and he’s is decidedly not a pet (and makes that very clear to me on a daily basis) so finding frames of reference can be a challenge!
Also thank you very much for your very lovely blog with some very cute fluffy sled dogs (we basically never see working ones in the UK only disaster owner pets and yours are gorgeous!)
I would say the difference in your dog's gait vs other dogs of the same breed's gait is down to structural differences not necessarily line dependent.
The structure of an individual dog's body affects the way it moves, this is why we see dogs bred for different purposes having often wildly different body types. A correct whippet's structure is best suited for its purpose of high speed chasing whereas a correct labrador's structure is best suited for retrieving in icy water all day. A lab should not move like a whippet and vice versa, but both of their structures are good things for their purposes.
The example above is extreme, but differences in gait and movement can occur at a more subtle level. The length of a dog's upper arm influences how far it is able to extend outward in front and have proper reach in its gait whereas the angle of the dog's shoulder affects how the dog is able to balance and move in a straight line.
Your dog likely moves differently than show line dogs not just because his weight is different but because structurally he is different. There are several reasons for structural split between work and show dogs and often the differences between such lineages in many breeds is a controversial and hotly debated subject.
For labradors for example they were original bred to help retrieve in icy Canadian waters and their standard is written accordingly. Field line or working line labradors here in America don't often deal with the icy temperatures so breeders often prefer a lighter structure and breed for a different preference than the show standard. With a different interpretation of the breed comes different structure.
Additionally not all breeders take functional structure strongly into account be it pet, show or working breeders. This means that some show breeders are often desiring exaggeration in a breed where there should be moderation, pet people breeding dogs just because they like them and not thinking of the structural implications and working breeders not thinking as deeply about structure as they should be because the dog works and is functional.

Vol 1 "Tango" - Chapter 3 (1/3)
Suzuki introducing his origins:
2015: Ma mère s'est installée chez des cousins à Cuba et c'est là que je suis né. Donc j'étais cubain, avant.
My mother came to live with cousins in Cuba and that's where I was born. So I was Cuban, before.
2020: Après s'être séparée d'avec mon père, ma mère s'est installée chez des cousins, à Cuba. C'est là que je suis né. Je suis donc cubain, à la base.
After separating from my father, my mother came to live with cousins, in Cuba. That's where I was born. So I am Cuban, to begin with.
2015 has cut out the divorce for some reason, despite the narration bubble still being there. The 2020 phrasing for "I am Cuban" feels more natural than the 2015 one and sounds better. I made a bunch of hypotheses but I'll only say it might be because there's a small b alliteration (Cubain à la base) while 2015 has a hiatus (Cubain avant) which is bleargh
"J'ai appris les règles des danses de salon..."
2015: par mon père
2020: grâce à mon père
Tumblr media
I must thank the CNRTL for this, but I'm not convinced "apprendre par" can be used for practical knowledge and not for information... The medium through which you hear of an information are the only example it gives.
Tumblr media
from a random available pdf from a canadian university, they straight up didn't include "par" lol
Anyway the 2015 phrasing sounds soooo wrong to me cjsdhjhfk
2015 zoomed in crop strikes again: it removes an entire speech bubble, in the corner where Shinya's dancing with his father and his father tells him to settle down. The first part is still there:
2015: Je pense pareil ! [cropped out]
2020: Ouais ! Faut se bouger, là !
When Aki gets annoyed and Shinya says it's bc Yoshi-kun told her she got home too late:
2015: J'ai deviné, non ? Il ne doit jamais nous voir danser tous les deux, compris ?
2020: J'ai deviné, hein ? Il ne faut pas que tu lui montres comment on danse, tous les deux.
The "non ?" and "hein ?" give a different vibe to the question "I guessed, [non/hein]?". 2015 sounds more teasing and 2020 sounds more worried.
As for the second part, 2015 sounds more authoritative, with the "understood?" at the end, while 2020, especially paired with the words before, comes off as worried and as something they've talked about before, a reminder before she gives in.

Everyone knows that the famous and elusive creature known as Sasquatch has a lot of nicknames. Some of these include Bigfoot, Yeti, and the Abominable Snowman. But there is one nickname that has been gaining popularity lately, and that is "Cocoa".
So why is Sasquatch grinning for this sweet moniker? It turns out that the name "Cocoa" is not just a random choice, but a clever play on words that perfectly suits the legendary creature.
One explanation for the choice of "Cocoa" as a nickname for Sasquatch is its connection to the creature's rumored habitat. Sasquatch is said to live in dense, forested areas, which often have a strong presence of cocoa trees. This makes the nickname a nod to the Sasquatch's natural habitat.
But the real reason for the grin comes from the wordplay involved. Many believe that the name "Cocoa" actually stands for "Creature Of the Canadian Outdoors". This clever acronym not only references the creature's rumored home in Canada, but also its elusive nature and strong ties to the great outdoors.
But the fun doesn't stop there. Another interpretation of "Cocoa" as a nickname for Sasquatch is its similarity to the word "coco", which is Spanish for coconut. This word also has connections to the woods, as coconut trees are often found in tropical forests. And let's not forget the classic joke "Why did the Sasquatch go to college? To get his BA - in Cocoa!".
Whatever the true reason for Sasquatch's toothy grin, one thing is for sure - the creature is embracing its new nickname with open arms (or should we say, furry arms?). From fan-made merchandise and social media handles to sightings and stories, "Cocoa" has become an endearing and catchy way to refer to the elusive and mysterious Sasquatch.
So next time you're out in the wilderness and hear rustling in the trees, don't be afraid to call out "Cocoa" - you never know, you may just catch a glimpse of the infamous creature. And if not, at least you'll have a fun new nickname to use for it.

On elks and gorillas
One of the strangest trends in silver age DC comic books was putting gorillas on the cover. For some reason, gorillas tended to sell, and DC would often create the covers before the comics. Thus there are a ton of Silver Age stories where superheroes fight evil gorillas. A few of those gorillas have stuck around, including Monsieur Mallah, the Ultra-Humanite, and, perhaps most famously, Gorilla Grodd.
Grodd is one of the Flash's greatest villains, posing as the Lex Luthor to his Superman. He hails from a secret gorilla city deep in the jungles of Africa where he's basically their only criminal. He was exiled, one thing led to another, and now he's one of the most storied villains of the DCU.
Setting aside the fact that that is very, very dumb (complementary), there's some unfortunate implications to this story. From Tarzan to Congo to the freakin' Mario Movie, the idea of a secret ape city is pretty ingrained in our culture. But it comes from some pretty damn racist and colonialist tropes. After all, Europeans saw Africans as little more than apes, so why not have an actual ape city? It's also very, very dumb (derogatory) in that it assumes that there aren't any "real people" living there who would notice a whole city of psychic gorillas. I wanted to put some reference to Grodd in my work, but at the same time, I want to avoid those problematic and even actively harmful tropes.
Enter Emyr Elk.
Emyr is an old Welsh name meaning "King," probably unrelated to the similar word for Arabic rulers. So basically King Elk. Elks were a joke for a while in Magic after the whole Oko fiasco ("Bold words for a 3/3 elk"), so I thought....why not give them their due? And after a friend of mine told me about the Philadelphia deer, I thought that cervids might make an interesting recurring theme.
He's basically Grodd, swapping out psychic powers for necromancy and gorilla for elk. After being exiled from his city for being a big jerkface, he has now decided to make himself some random superhero's problem. They have a bit more of a connection since Jack is also cervid-themed, but it's still your basic Grodd-like.
Now instead of a secret gorilla city in the African jungle, we have a secret elk city in the northern taiga. One of these sounds significantly sillier than the other, but only because of nearly a century and a half of racist tropes.
When I turned to my partner and said, "Elk are the new gorillas," he understood exactly what I meant, and was terrified.
He then tried to convince me (with reasonable success) that Canadians avoid saying the word "moose" like ancient indo-europeans avoided the original word for "bear," but that's another story.
(Edit: Shortly after posting this I realized that this could be seen as applying the same tropes to arctic indigenous peoples, including but not limited to Samoyed and Inuit. I feel like there is less weight of stereotype behind it than the African city, but I'm open to criticism by anyone who may have real lived experience on the subject. At the very least I will be consciously avoiding any such cultural stereotypes with the Elks)

my dad is going to see family in Ireland and England then going to just hang out in France for a bit so last yesterday before I drove him to the airport he handed me this weird basket I had never seen before full of little jars and bags or random coins, and requested I sort out the pounds and euros so he could take them on his trip. of course he knows exactly how to harness my autism and I happily sorted coins. on top of pounds and euros denominations represented include:
Canadian and US Dollars, highest being like a billion American pennies
some Namibian paper money
Cuban pesos, as well as Cuban convertible pesos which they don't use anymore
lots of Franks
some coins that I think we're from Spain
a few coins from Hong Kong
a surprising amount of currency from Barbados
while I was amassing pounds I happened upon a one shilling coin, my father confirmed no we don't use shillings anymore, and I wondered how long has it been since the UK got rid of shillings?
this simple question led me to the discovery of simultaneously the most wild and the most British thing I've ever heard of:
Decimal Day
what is decimal day? you may be asking yourself if you are a north American millennial like myself
February 15, 1971 the UK and Ireland switched it's currency from pounds, shillings, and pence to just pounds and pence, and switched the currency from the most unhinged imaginable base 12 currency system, to a much more reasonable base 10 system
(this probably had something to do with the UK switching from imperial to metric measurements, but I didn't google that)
in order to understand how unhinged British money was, let's look at some conversions:
12 pence = 1 shilling
20 shillings = 1 pound
240 pence = 1 pound
like.... what? I cannot IMAGINE
also, when they switched they had new pence, as if everything wasn't wild enough enough already. my dad remembers the switch happening. he says counting money was way easier after, but it was something both his grandmother's were very concerned about. he thinks they had a cake.
anyway, shillings remained legal tender until 1990 and were worth five new pence (not old pence, be careful). after 1990 they were removed from circulation. I cannot IMAGINE the hassle of trying to manage that transition as a cashier.
I did find in the Coin Box some coins that said five new pence, and then some that just said five pence, but I didn't think to look at the dates on them though.
and there we have
Decimal Day

As numbingly routine as school shootings have become in the United States, Monday’s death toll at a Nashville elementary school — six dead, including three nine-year-old children — was still enough to occasion the usual calls for tighter gun control. As hopeless a cause as that might seem from afar, it will always seem tantalizingly simple and plausible to its proponents: Other countries have much more gun control; no other country has America’s mass-shooting epidemic.
The same spirit animates Canadians when children die from senseless adult violence, whether from guns or other weapons. Torontonians remember the names of shooting victims 15-year-old Jane Creba, 11-year-old Ephraim Brown, and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis, among others a stabbing victim to the sad toll this week: 16-year-old Gabriel Magalhaes. For better or for worse, however — probably for better, ultimately — we’re not hearing the same calls for blunt and simplistic solutions
At 9 p.m. on Saturday night, 16-year-old Gabriel was sitting on a bench at Keele subway station, minding his own business, when 22-year-old Jordan O’Brien-Tobin allegedly walked up and stabbed him to death for no reason. He is the latest victim in a bewildering recent wave of random attacks in this city — several fatal and many, though not all, on the transit system. Reported violent incidents involving TTC passengers were up nearly 50 percent in 2022 over the previous year.
On Tuesday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford demanded a show of police force on the TTC. That’s not at all unreasonable. But Toronto did try that, with a six-week deployment of 80 officers that wound down last month for want of funding. (The 80 cops were working overtime.) That deployment might have made the system safer — the police claim to have made more than 300 arrests, but we don’t yet have figures on assaults on passengers. More made some passengers feel safer, which isn’t nothing. But feeling safe never saved anyone’s life.
Even former police chief Mark Saunders, the presumptive law-and-order frontrunner candidate in May’s mayoral by-election, is being conspicuously long-term and soft-power in his messaging. “Police absolutely play a critical role,” he said in a statement, “but if we don’t start to really get at the root of the crime to continue to be Band-Aid solutions.”
A recently announced plan to deploy social workers to engage with disturbed and potentially dangerous people on the transit system is more me. There aren’t hundreds and hundreds of such people riding the system, after all. In the brutal death of last winter, TTC CEO Rick Leary estimated 40 homeless people were spending the night on TTC property or rollingstock.
Chase a disturbed, potentially dangerous person out of the subway, and then you’ve got a potentially dangerous person on the sidewalk. Mental-health professionals can develop before something awful happens on or off the TTC.
But then, what happens when they flag an issue? Ideally, an efficient and adequately resourced mental-health system would spring into action, but the state of that system is universally acknowledged to be dire. In his statement, Saunders mentioned “a massive deficit in how we manage the mental health needs of people in Toronto.” We don’t arrest people for what they might do.
Clearly, Canada needs an urgent inquiry (formal or otherwise) into the value the justice system places on public safety in releasing people — especially repeat offenders — on bail and parole. O’Brien-Tobin’s criminal record is longer than your arm — he managed 28 convictions in a single year in Newfoundland, The Mail reports — and includes a conviction man with a boxcutter. Defenders of the current “catch-and-release” system (as its detractors describe it) should welcome such an inquiry more than anyone because they’re losing the hell out of the argument in the real world.
But across the political spectrum, in Toronto, most people seem to grasp that this problem isn’t going society get better. No good news there: As it stands, society doesn’t seem to be finished getting worse. But cynical as I am, one problem does stick out to me as eminently solvable: The use of the transit system as a homeless shelter.
Of course, the homeless Torontonians are no threat to anyone else. But as every perpetrator of random violence on the TTC very much seems to be violent, mental homelessness has essentially become conflated in the public consciousness. It negatively affects riders’ sense of security, and the TTC’s homeless all-day passengers do no favors either.
It’s not as though spending all day on a subway train or streetcar is. It’s certainly not private. Hardly any stations even have toilets. All the transit system offers is a dry place, warm in winter and cool in summer, and a certain sense of security: Homeless people are very often victims of violence themselves — not least in Toronto, where eight teenage girls are accused of swarming 59-year-old Ken Lee to death downtown in December — and help is nearer at hand on the TTC than somewhere out of sight.
It seems patently ludicrous that the city can’t meet harmless, peaceful homeless people’s most basic needs when those needs are so utterly humble — humbler, indeed, than the crowded and hectic shelters they would clearly rather not patronize. In a short indoor flat surface, to be left alone in some personal space, and access to help if they need it beyond Toronto’s ken to provide that for a few dozen people somewhere other than on the transit system, it’s difficult to imagine how the city’s decline can ever be arrested.

'Tip-flation' is getting out of hand for some Canadians: Angus Reid survey
Following more than a year of high inflation, most Canadians believe gratuities for the service industry are getting out of hand, new polling suggests.
A new Angus Reid survey found that 59 per cent of Canadians would prefer a system that has a "service included" model where employees would be paid higher wages and customers wouldn't have to tip based on the percentage of their meal.
The survey also found that Canadians are not only being asked to tip more but they are also being asked to tip more often, even in places that haven't always asked for tips – a phenomena known as a "tip creep."
"Four-in-five (83 per cent) say too many places are asking for tips these days, including at least three-quarters across all regions and demographics," the study results read.
According to the report, 23 per cent reported tipping less than 15 per cent, marking a drastic change from the 43 per cent that reported the same range for tipping in a 2016 survey.
Since the world began to "return to normal" following the closures of restaurants and other public spaces due to COVID-19, a 2022 report found that Canadians were tipping more and likely doing so out of sympathy and excitement to the return of public dining.
The Angus Reid survey also noted Canadians are still tipping regardless and some are still following the socially standard 20 per cent tip. Twenty-one per cent of Canadians said they left a tip of 20 per cent or more, a large jump from the 8 per cent in 2016 who said they tipped the same.
REASONS BEHIND TIPPING NO LONGER ABOUT SERVICE
The report found that the majority of Canadians no longer tip depending on the quality of the service but because tips are a way for employers to underpay their employees.
Approximately 73 per cent of Canadians believe this, while 69 per cent said tips are usually the only benefit to working a service job since minimum wage jobs can only give so much.
In 2020, a Toronto, Ont., restaurant Richmond Station banned tipping and followed a "hospitality included" model where they would increase the prices of their food to better compensate the staff. The restaurant said their staff is paid above minimum wage, with most having salary wages. While many countries around the world have moved to a similar model, the restaurant noted it hopes other restaurants in North America follow suit to end a model that is seen as "unfair."
"The fact of the matter is, tipping has been proven time and again to be sexist, racist, prejudiced and predatory. Every employee hopes to avoid having those traits present in their workplace," the FAQ page on the restaurant read.

✰          META  /  HEADCANON          :          MISCELLANEOUS   INFORMATION.
Tumblr media
guinevere jones  (  the series , not the character  )  is a fantasy television series and a series of four novels created by elizabeth stewart .   it revolves around the adventures of the title character as she uses magic to fight evil , while at the same time dealing with problems and difficulties of high school .   the show debuted in canada on may 4 , 2002 on ytv and ten days later in australia . it ran for twenty-six episodes over two seasons , and was later adapted into four novels published by random house australia .   as the show is on the verge of being considered lost media , only a few clips and episodes online remaining , my blog is mostly novelization and headcanon based .   below is some information about gwen , things i consider important and other more mundane .   the following is a combination of my own personal headcanons , but also information available in the novels .
gwen jones was born on november 2nd 1984 , in toronto , ontario , canada .   since her birthday and specific birth place were never stated in the books , i have decided to give her the same birthday and birth place as her actress , tamara hope / lindeman .   gwen is a scorpio , a sign many joke suits her well as she is unpredictable and passionate .
gwen's first name was decided by her father , and her second by karen .   as stated in the book , her father was the one who suggested they call her gwen , aware that his daughter would turn out to be guinevere's newest reincarnation .   karen gave her the second name amanda after her own mother .   latin in origin , the name is a feminine form of the saint's name amandus , from the word amandus , future passive participle of amāre (  "to love"  )  :  thus meaning "who/which is to be loved" .   this second name and the fact she does not disclose it is the reason why she believed amanda , in choices / love and other magic , when she claimed she was karen's sister , in spite of being usually cautious .
karen wasn't at first aware of patrick's plan and association with morgan .   when she realized it , she immediately went on the run , giving birth to gwen while in toronto .   after the birth of her daughter , they kept on moving all over canada , finally moving to australia when gwen turned fourteen years old .
because she was constantly on the run her entire life , gwen has a difficult time forming emotional attachment towards anyone but her mother .   since it was always the two of them , she had learned very early on not to get attached , although she knew she would never have the time to .   as a result , she can seem cold and detached , unless her mother is mentioned .   by the end of her series , however , she has formed attachments to many people , including her group of friends as well as her foster family , kathy included .
after the events of the show / books , the jones decide to stay in australia rather than return to canada   .   this means gwen continues to attend griffin secondary school , close to melbourne .   although she uses australian expressions , she speaks with a canadian accent , and occasionally uses words specific to toronto .   karen also makes sure to rent a flat close to the rosens , since both her and gwen consider harve , louise and kathy as part of their family .   staying close to the rosens also allows gwen to remain close to her friends , which she is grateful for .
because they were constantly on the run and had to move often , gwen has very few personal possessions , mostly clothes .   she is used to having little , but feels like it is just one more reason as to why she is different from other girls her age .   as a result , she tends to wear the same clothes over and over again , even though harve and louise make sure to buy her clothes whenever they can .
speaking of her foster family , gwen warmed up easier to harve than louise , although she comes to love and appreciate them both .   there are two reasons for this  :  first , since harve is a man , she didn't feel like he would come and try to take karen's position away .   since she was always told she simply did not have a father , the idea of a father figure through foster care made her feel a little more normal , unlike a mother which she already had .   the second reason is because harve made it clear from the get go that she didn't have to be kathy's older sister if she didn't want to , something she appreciated .   upon understanding louise had no intention of replacing karen , gwen also warmed up to her , coming to view them as part of her family by the end of the series .
albeit she doesn't put too much effort in it , gwen's favorite subject in school is english , and particularly literature .   she is a good writer and can easily express her ideas on paper , however , her handwriting is particularly messy , which o' leary exploits in order to gain her trust .   the fact she recognizes it is difficult to read , as well as her inhability to buy a computer for herself is why she takes o' leary's offer to give her his without giving a second thought , albeit she argues with him she shouldn't take it based on moral principles .
because they moved all over canada , and because it is part of the curiculum , gwen can speak french on a conversational level .   she is by no means an expert , but having french classes and having lived in québec and new brunswick a couple of times , she can understand a good portion of it .    however , she cannot understand complicated words , certain expressions as well as some accents .
gwen is not particularly knowledgable when it comes to modern popular culture  .   since she only ever really hung out with her mother until she befriended tasha and the rest of her friends in australia , she has no clue what is popular with kids her age .   she tries to keep up with trends in an attempt to be / seem as normal as possible in spite of her circumstances , but it is difficult for her to do so when she is continually on the move and does not get the time to go to the movies , concerts , etc.   some find this lack of understanding charming and proof of her being mature , but gwen finds it shameful as it is yet another reminder she is not like everyone else .   this lack of knowledge is also why she didn't know about king arthur's legend and guinevere until moving to australia and meeting both tasha and merlin .
though she has a crush on josh first and then michael , gwen isn't a particularly romantic person .   she experiences attraction the same way other heterosexual girls her age do , but has yet to figure out she is pansexual .   since she has difficulty forming emotional attachments , she never really had the time to develop crushes and date until josh .   she also views romance as a total waste of time , which is one of the few things that seperates her from the original guinevere .
while it is hinted in the series , gwen's attraction to michael is not merely because of the fact he might be lancelot's reincarnation .   she just thinks he is a kind and gentle soul underneath the brooding and anger , and their past also makes it easier for her to relate to him .   suggesting she merely likes him because of lancelot is the best way to make her angry , and also part of the reason why she doesn't pursue a relationship with him .
also , having met tamara lindeman myself and witnessed this , gwen is of average height for her age .   she currently is five feet two , but will go on to grow up to five feet six .
and that covers everything i have to say for now   .   the reason why i sound a bit zealous at times through this post is that i wish to offer my followers a nuanced portrayal of one of my favorite characters of all times while honoring elizabeth's creation and its meaning for the author and the actress who acted as gwen .   it’s , after all , the least i can do if you ask me .
