(you don't have to post this, I know you try to keep things pretty salt-light here) I mean, I'm sure everyone who uses any sort of good reasoning for Luka to not tell Marinette don't really mean it. They have to come up with various reasons because Luka (canonically) has never had a bad one for doing anything for/to Marinette. We all know that the writers want to keep him away from her and they just want someone to help the LS even more. The writers basically admitted that "now he can help both"
This inspired a whole rumination on the nature of salt and my feelings about it that I’m actually going to put in another post. 😂 When I do, please don’t feel guilty about it dear anon, it’s not your fault.
Anyway just for reference, for new readers or anyone who needs to know, it's not because I’m anti-salt or have anything against salt or because I disagree with salt takes or don't want salt on my blog at all, I just find that too much of it gets depressing for my chemically-imbalanced brain and kills my enthusiasm and ability to create, so I try to keep things a little lighter for my own sanity.
That being said, let’s engage in a little literary criticism. 😁
I agree with you anon, I think a lot of people had that same confused, stomach-dropping moment I did and had to work backward to get to a place where that would be a reasonable decision, just based on the reactions I saw and the people I talked to when the ep first came out.
However if there ARE people who think that it was the right decision, either immediately or after thinking it through, that's okay, I think that's valid (and I think it is very likely those people exist simply because humans are so wonderfully different). I could see Luka being on a knife's edge there, trying to make the best choice under the circumstances, and I don't think it's totally implausible that it would play out the way it did. One might even say that the message she sends him in Ephemeral indicates that deep down Mari knows Luka knows and that maybe she even wanted him to lie to her, which being as intuitive as he is, he understood and compromised his deeply held beliefs and preference for direct sincere communication to do what she wanted. If he did make that decision, I can see him doing it that way--bold as brass, look her square in the eye and lie to her face. He could have prevaricated or just not really given an answer but he straight up, flat out lied. All or nothing is pretty in keeping with the way I see him, and I saw it a little bit as Luka's way of absolving her for lying to him by willingly--I don't want to say coming down to her level because that implies more judgement than I want, but sorta like that. So if Luka decided to throw all his beliefs to the wind, I suppose that is a good way to go? I think he can do that with good intentions? It could even make for some interesting conflicts for him later if they ever gave him more than three minutes of screen time. (see, now that was salt)
I do think that protecting Mari's sanity and/or saving her from having to make a difficult decision is the only explanation in line with his character, so given what happened, if I were going to write a canon compliant fic, I would absolutely go with that.
For me personally though--hmm how do I put this. Character is very intuitive for me? While I can, with some effort, pick apart why I think a character would act a certain way, it starts as a gut feeling. So when that moment happened, it felt like when you expect a car to go left and it turns right instead, and you feel for a moment like your stomach kept going the direction you were expecting to go. To me, that was an indicator that this moment is “wrong” for how I see the character. Which sounds kind of arrogant to say in writing, but eh, it’s the way I feel.
And you know, that’s fine when it's one moment. It happens sometimes, that someone sacrifices character authenticity to further the plot, and while lazy, it’s not earth shattering. What worries me about it, and about Wishmaker in general, is that I'm worried about it being a pivot in how they're going to portray his character from now on rather than being one out of character moment. Luka was overall pushier in that episode than he's ever been, and while it wasn't a lot taken by itself, it's a significant shift from "you should go talk to him" to taking her hand and pulling her, however gently, into a conversation with Adrien. Much like you can say Alya was out of character in a few episodes of season 3, but then you see them triple-down on this version of her character in the specials and season four, and now she’s straight up a bad friend. How many times can you make a character out of character before it becomes their character? Luka’s actions in that moment are just close enough to being in character to be a reasonable shift IF they plan to follow it up with him, as you say, “helping them both.” So, really, Wishmaker was the episode that really made me feel upset, because I had previously assumed, especially given how little they ever give Luka to do or say in the show (let’s remember that his glory episodes were Silencer, where he was akumatized as a villain who couldn’t use his own voice for the majority of his screentime and where a good bit of the time out of that was taken up by a silent montage, and Desperada, where 90% of the episode was Adrien, and the breakup episode, of which he got to be normal for maybe half), that they would write him out (travel the world with Jagged, etc) or just quietly ignore him/let him fade out. While I fully believe he would support Mari through the lovesquare getting together, I really don’t want to watch him do it, especially if they have him start pushing rather than just supporting. No thank you.
I also keep struggling with saying this because it sounds like I think being a luthier is boring or “lesser” and as a committed maker myself I absolutely respect the passion and skill it takes to make anything, let alone things as complicated as an instrument, but something about the timing and the way they made Luka want to be a career luthier made me feel like it was an attempt to...deglamorize him? Like, having him be an aspiring rock star (which, I’ll grant you, was never really stated for sure) was too much competition for Adrien so part of their attempt to tone him down as a love rival was to make him less compatible with Marinette’s ambitions, you know? It would have been different if we had ever seen Luka tinkering with guitars in the past, or fixing things, or having pieces of instruments or tools out in his room, but everything they’ve ever shown has pointed more for him being a performer on one scale or another, so just declaring it out of the blue seems like a cheap tactic to me. Which is annoying because I’ve always loved the idea of Luka getting into making guitars as a hobby/self-maintenance/off shoot of his passion/side gig kind of thing (see Luka refinishing his guitar in Finding Harmony), and now I’m aggravated when I think about it.
So, yes, all of that was a long-winded way to say I agree with you, it definitely feels to me like they broke character there because they’re trying to transition him out of the love rival position, and I’m not excited for where they’re going to take it from here.

I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ON LUKA AS A CHARACTER AFTER WISHMAKER AND I’M GONNA DUMP THEM HERE
Luka is such a cool character and he has been a rock for marinette when things got rough for her, but beyond just being a really good and supportive friend I’ve gotta say that if anyone was going to find out both ladybug and chat noir’s identities, luka was definitely the best person for the job. like Marinette better be happy she was basically stuck giving that boy the miraculous of the snake because he might actually be the only one who can handle that level of responsibility.
First of all, he’s ridiculously level-headed until it’s his friends or family who are threatened. I don’t think he’d be akumatized unless someone came directly after his family or friends instead of him- the dude’s ridiculously patient and even-keeled, and as we know from Silencer, a gentle soul. Still though, this guy handles the information of who ladybug and chat noir are ridiculously well.
Like ignoring the weight of the responsibility for a second, just look at how hard it’s got to be to keep his mouth shut on a frustration level- he’s got so much on his plate already and now he’s got to watch these two knuckleheads be the level of oblivious and awkward that they are as civilians knowing full well how close they are as superheroes and how in love both of them are with each other (without knowing it) with a patient smile? The frustration we feel from watching the love square? This boy is living it.
Plus we know from Truth just how important that honesty is to Luka- he values it so so highly and holds himself to such a high standard, but when ladybug asks him point blank to his face whether or not he found out their identities, he lies without hesitation. He literally says that they were never hit (side note: why would he have used second chance then? idk ladybug didn’t ask so she probably assumed something else went wrong or they got stuck since he did seem to let her know that they had used multiple chances so whatever).
He lied to this girl who he cares about so much and compromised his own principles so soon after them being emphasized in Truth without questioning it because he
1. obviously cares about marinette/ladybug and chat noir/adrien and wants to protect them but also
2. because he understands that the responsibility that has been given to him as Viperion has to come before his own principles for the greater good.
He takes his hero-ing seriously, which is what you need from someone who’s going to be given the ability to play with time and potentially be your last resort if everything else fails. He’s known this, but I think after having that responsibility really play out in this episode at the expense of his own principles, he probably understands Marinette and the pressure she was facing and the weight that comes with being a miraculous holder even better than before. He probably went home and rethought everything, especially what happened in Truth with Marinette.
And speaking of the RESPONSIBILITY? All that while trying to not get akumatized and not hint EVEN TO LADYBUG/MARINETTE HERSELF (his friend and the guardian who trusted him with that miraculous) that he knows her identity or chat noir’s? And not hint that they really know each other in real life? And not slip at all even though he hangs out with both of them as civilians all the time?
Like he’s just gonna sit on that information and that responsibility of being the only person in Paris who knows both of their identities and not physically implode from the stress or tell anyone? Knowing that if anyone finds out he will become Shadow Moth’s number 1 target? But he won’t jeopardize his friends by even letting marinette know that he knows so he can talk to someone about it? Like I know he isn’t getting paid but someone get this boy a raise 😭

Miraculous Awakening Spoilers!
Yuh anyways
The biggest change they did in this movie is honestly giving Gabriel Agreste compassion. BC LITERALLY he gave up the fight the minute he realized he was fighting his son.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile in show literally every time he’s realized it’s Adrien:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they literally just gave him a human reaction, like a good father who actually likes his child reaction. I’m still not over what happened in Wishmaker bc what was

#MLBS4SPOILERS
everyone talks about Wishmaker because of the Identity reveal and all. and I get it.
However, I feel sad because no one discusses the actual Chat Noir reveal...
Tumblr media
When Adrien is touched by Wishmaker, he litteraly says something along the lines of "When I was little, I wanted to be whatever would make my parents happy."
I feel like this is a key element to his personality that gives it a serious turn we hadn't explicitly explored before.
I know Luka was shaken by the reveal, but I wish he would find some way to adress it to Adrien..

some questions about clawdi because i love her so much:
1. when did she realize she was trans + when did she begin her transition?
2. when did she come out to allie?
3. other than video games, what are some of her hobbies??
i absolutely adore your games and cannot wait for wishmaker to come out !! 💕
I guess I'll put a soft spoiler warning here!
I feel like Clawdi "realizes" shortly after the events of the game (I mean, prior to the time-skip). The more she engages with the idea of not having to adhere to "boyhood" the more it starts to come to her that she's not a boy ===
I feel like she never really formally came out so much as just slowly transitioning into things. Growing her hair out longer, shaving her face, wearing more feminine clothes day by day, etc. I feel like her name change was brought about to Allie in a casual "Hey, can you say 'Clawdi' instead?" during conversation and so it always stuck ===
Hmmm....I think I can see her liking to listen to music while rollerblading down the shoreline!

Adrien Agreste…and Data from Star Trek. The parallels kept leaping out at me. Then I started talking about it with my husband and a friend and it spiralled. Bear in mind, this whole post is full of Star Trek spoilers, including the films, especially Nemesis.
Unnatural Creations
Adrien’s a sentibeing and Data’s an android. They’re both created by ‘unnatural’ means – created by a human rather than God/nature/whatever you believe. Consequently, they both begin their lives as blank slates, with no childhood memories, and they long to fulfil their programming. With Data, this is more literal, while in Wishmaker Adrien tells us all he ever wanted was to be what his parents wanted him to be.
This lends them a similar sense of naivety, leaving them open to being fooled or even used. In a way, they are both Pinocchio, wishing to be ‘real boys’. Pinocchio even wears a feather in his cap, which is what led me to do this drawing a few years ago.
Tumblr media
Data and Adrien’s ‘fathers’ (creators) have made other children, too – other androids and sentibeings – not necessarily to public knowledge.
Dreams
Over time, both Adrien and Data come to desire individuality. An integral part of this is having dreams. Adrien’s dreams come in the form of personal ambitions, beginning with his love for Ladybug. Data has ambitions, too, but his dreams also come in a more literal form, i.e. as he evolves, he starts dreaming like a real human.
'Evil' Twins
Another crucial part of being human is self-reflection, highlighted by Data and Adrien’s ‘evil twins’. For Data, this is Lore, made according to the same design but with his own personality. He obtains the emotion chip intended for Data. Where Data is all logic, Lore is all feeling without boundaries. He’s the emotional potential exploding unchecked.
Adrien has a few ‘shadow’ sides, which I’ve explored before. An obvious one is Felix, wielder of the peacock miraculous, i.e. the power of emotion. Then there’s Cat Blanc, who is all of Adrien’s darker thoughts and feelings bursting forth uncontrolled.
What Lore, Felix and Cat Blanc have in common is that they are abused sons, bitter and resentful that their fathers never gave them the love they longed for. They lash out from grief and trauma. Also, Lore killed his/Data’s father, while Cat Blanc killed Gabriel in an alternate timestream.
Data needs to face and deal with this ‘shadow’ side before he’s ready to receive the emotion chip intended for him and find the happy medium between the two extremes of the emotional spectrum. We see this when he is forced to deactivate Lore, thus inheriting the emotion chip, learning from the mistakes his brother made and trying to do better.
Likewise, Adrien needs to come to terms with his ‘shadow’ before he’s ready to face the final battle with Monarch. In Conformation, this played out as Adrien having the emotional maturity to recognised when he was out of control and make the decision to remove his miraculous, stepping away from the battle before he could do damage.
This is without even getting into the mirror universes in both shows, where Data has a much more direct ‘evil’ alter, and Cat Noir comes head-to-head with Claw Noir. (Sadly, we never saw Data hug Evil Data the way we saw our two Noirs accept each other.) There was also the very brief Copycat moment. Adrien’s had a lot of doubles.
It’s interesting to note that Lore believed he was superior to humans and had a genocidal plan, much like Felix snaps all the non-sentibeings out of existence in Emotion. Lore also dresses like Data and poses like him to fool their father and others on the ship, like Felix does with Adrien, attempting to fool Gabriel and others in Adrien’s life. A key difference is that Lore never really gets the chance for redemption, whereas Felix is only 14 and has his whole life ahead of him, with the opportunity for positive evolution. He discovers the love he’s lacked as a child and chooses to change.
At one point, Lore also implants the emotion chip in Data and uses it to control him remotely, inspiring anger and hate in him, thus weaponising him. Felix makes it very clear that he would never try to control Adrien. Instead, it’s Gabriel who controls Adrien via the twin rings, the Alliance, and magical dust causing him to live out his worst nightmare. In Cat Blanc and Ephemeral, we also see Gabriel akumatise Adrien, using his darkest feelings to transform him into a weapon.
Perfection
When Data first meets his brother, Lore convinces Data that he was created as a 'less perfect' version of him. When they are later summoned back to their father's secret home, Data learns this is untrue and is fascinated to realise that he is 'not less perfect than Lore'. Adrien, too, is repeatedly described as 'perfect'.
Cats
Data has a beloved pet cat. Adrien, of course, spends all his private time with Plagg. I also can't help but notice that Data and Cat Noir's eyes are similar in colour.
Artistry / Education
Data is a keen painter and violinist, and well-versed in just about everything, bearing in mind he was programmed with encyclopaedic knowledge. Adrien is a pianist and, thanks to his father’s programming, is also highly skilled in multiple disciplines and languages…and seems to know a lot of very random information, e.g. Morse code.
Undead Mothers and the Demented Fathers Who Can’t Let Them Go
Adrien’s father can’t get over the death of his wife and keeps her cryogenically sustained in the basement. Similarly, Data’s ‘father’ was married to a woman Data deems his ‘mother’. She, too, died long ago, but his father transferred her personality and memories into an android body. She’s the only android in the galaxy who can pass as completely human, even in medical scans.
Self-Sacrifice
Cat Noir is always sacrificing himself for Ladybug. We don’t know if he remembers those moments of death or not. He seems to throw himself in front of her on instinct, as if it were the natural order of things. He believes he’s not as valuable as she is.
In Star Trek: Nemesis Data sacrificed himself for Picard – although he did see himself as of equal value. In fact, he argued strenuously throughout the series for equal status with humans. And to all of us watching Nemesis…I can’t begin to tell you how hard his ‘death’ hit me.
On paper, it makes sense for an android – a robot – to sacrifice himself so a human may live. But we spent seven seasons plus several films getting to know Data. Android or not, he was a beloved character, he was a friend, he formed relationships. That’s why the crew gave him a full funeral and eulogies.
Likewise, Cat’s sacrifices hit Ladybug hard, something many of us fanfiction writers have explored in depth.
Programming
Perhaps the biggest difference is that Data knew he was programmed. He knew he was at the mercy of his microchip. He knew when his emotion chip was installed. He was wholly conscious of his developmental journey.
Yet, even after five seasons, Adrien has no idea. He doesn’t know he’s been programmed because he doesn’t know he’s a sentibeing. Like something out of Blade Runner – and like Data’s mother – Adrien would pass the Empathy Test and be deemed human yet still have no idea of his origins.
The fact is, you can’t break your programming until you know you’ve been programmed.
Data was given all the chances he needed to live a full life and make a fully informed decision about what he wanted to do with it at the end when he made that final sacrifice. Adrien has none of that. He was edging towards revelation, realising his father was controlling him somehow, but all of that was taken from him at the end of S5. It’s like if Data were given a hard reset.
Marinette’s choice to keep the truth from Adrien mirrors Data’s choice to keep the truth from his android mother. She believes she’s a human, the original woman she was made to replicate, and he chooses to let her carry out her life under that pretence.
'I want to be a real boy!'
As I said, Data and Adrien are both like Pinocchio, trying to be ‘real boys’.
At the end of Data’s life, it didn’t matter whether he was made by a scientist or by organic means. He touched people’s lives, and that made him real in all the ways that matter.
Similarly, if Adrien got snapped away, people would remember him. They would mourn him. It doesn’t matter if there’s a body left behind or not. He too has touched so many lives, and that makes him just as real and important as any organic human.
In these ways, I believe they both succeed at being 'real' regardless of how they came into being.
I bet I could think of more parallels if I tried, but this has already got long enough :)

spoilers for the newest episode but i think i finally figured out my issue with the Adrien being a senti thing and maybe why other people dislike it as well. (this is not slander i promise i love adrien and i want the best for him.) (ps this is also unedited so read at your own risk)
Adrien presents himself in public as someone who is incapable of flaw and that’s the point of his civilization appearance and duality of his hero identity. I take no issue with Chat Noir being a senti yet i take issue with Adrien. But why? they are the same person! i’m going to explain why this is and i think many others feel this way too.
1. Adrien’s civilian identity of perfection makes it harder to see him as a person and not just a character. He feels flat this late into the series. (THIS IS NOT SLANDER LET ME EXPLAIN)
This may be intentional for the future for the other characters perception of Adrien in later seasons but for the audience it should not be this hard. He is technically a main character and i think we don’t hear enough from him internally. We never hear his thoughts. We hear Chat noir having his own dialogue about himself but never Adrien (i’ll get to that next). We had that heartbreaking scene in wishmaker where Adrien only wanted what his parents wanted for him but i feel that we didn’t get elaborate enough point of view from him. i wanted him to explain more of what that meant for him!! was he sad about that? happy? angry? we never hear his opinions of himself and just because he’s a senti doesn’t mean he can’t think critically of himself. (if the writers say otherwise that just feels like bad writing)
2. the gap between Adrien and Chat Noir feels too wide.
As the show progressed i hoped that we would begin to see how Adrien and Chat Noir and Marinette and Ladybug’s personas would blend together. My favorite scene was in risk was Adrien FINALLY speaking his mind (in front of someone he cares about!!) that’s huge!! i loved that!! i wish they kept this up in season 5 more and we had more scenes where adrien tries to wrestle for control. i feel that would have greatly benefitted his character. I wish we had more personality overlap. and example of this is as him and marinette started getting closer in season 5 he’d start letting his guard down around her and letting more of the chat noir side of his personality through. i’ve talked about Adrien being the embodiment of perfection and that is intentional from a writing perspective. his counterbalance is being chat noir and chat noir feels very human, real and tangible. He feels like a teenage boy who is in love, and that’s why the chat noir persona is a fan favorite. he feels very real and that’s why I’m ok with Chat being a senti. if I had learned, Adrien was senti in season one i would have been a lot more on board.
moving away from the story and on to some technical gripes starting with my biggest and most polarizing opinion…
3. I think that Adrien being a senti was added retroactively and it was intended to be a plot twist.
now this is just a theory but listen to where I’m coming from. this isn’t a bad thing necessarily I just feel like when they executed this idea, season one was already being aired on tv. if you take a look at Adrien’s character in s1 vs s4, you can see that Adrien‘s general demeanor is looser and more fluid between both of his identities compared to when we get in the later seasons. Adrien with other people, Chat Noir, and Adrien alone, fit pretty cohesively in my opinion in s1. in s5, Adrien very much feels like a husk of the person we knew before. The fear of fighting back has now fully taken over him, but where did it come from? You can push all you want that it was Gabriel taking more control over Adrien in later seasons and sure, but why didn’t we see that as an audience sooner?
Now let’s play devils advocate and suggest that Adrien being a senti was not a retroactive decision: if it was, I wish we saw Adrien pushing Gabriel more. somewhere in the season 3-4 timeframe, Adrien begin to get scared of fighting back. and in season five you can see this fully as he is now completely scared to fight back when, in the very first episode, the idea of fighting back against his father seemed more of an annoyance than a full-blown fear. I wish we saw what made Adrien so scared because it feels like it appeared out of nowhere. we don’t get much room to work with him as a character and see his perspective.
And now the plot twist point. we’ve definitely been getting clues because this theory is not a new one by far however, in the fandom a couple years ago, it was definitely a far-fetched theory at the time. for a characterization point for the main character, such a crucial piece of information about his very existence, should not have been held for that long. That should’ve been something maybe revealed to the audience in season three. and revealed to the characters at the end of season five or something like that.
Adrien losing that fluid dynamic essence from season one really made it feel like we lost him as a character somewhere along the way and that is what I don’t like about it. I don’t like that Adrien‘s whole personality has been reduced to him being senti. all of his character arcs and progression is only expressed through chat noir, and none of it through Adrien himself.
One last thing I wanted to add was Mayra didn’t sense that Chat Noir was a senti when she was active. That’s been a little thing that’s been bugging me because Felix clearly picked up on the fact that Kagami’s a senti. and you could counter that by saying oh, it’s because the miraculous was broken! and sure we could say that but from a writing standpoint, I don’t like it. it doesn’t fit cleanly with everything else we have.
I say all this out of love for the show I’ve been a fan for 7 years. I also say this out of love for Adrien because I want the best for all these kids, even Lila and Chloe. these are mostly things I just wanted to get out there and please do correct me if I’m wrong, I love hearing other peoples opinions! i’m due for a rewatch of the show anyway so I wrote this all from memory .
