Joseph Mallord William Turner was the outstanding British painter of his generation. He challenged the conventions of the time, with new techniques and subject matter. Turner often shocked his contemporaries with his loose brushwork and vibrant colour palette. His work often portrays the development of the modern world.

In ‘The Lungernsee by Moonlight,’ as in other works from his Swiss series, Turner deals heavily in contrast, using mustard yellows and earthy greens against mauve and ultramarine shadows to trace the path of reflected light from the waxing crescent moon. All of this is soothed by the sea-green reflections in the lake’s luminous waters. His technique of building up colour over layers of translucent washes and flecks of paint help refine this subtle evocation of twilight, making it feel at once tranquil and energetic. 

Turner had a lifelong fascination with the sea. His depiction of the sea is everchanging, like the sea itself. Sometimes his paintings delight in its calmer face, revelling in tranquil surfaces reflective of golden sunlight. But he was also fascinated by the sea’s potential as a destructive force: his canvases include terrifying waves, storms and shipwrecks.

William Turner ▪︎ Santhatela Mais Pinceladas magníficas conjuram um vortex de chuva cegante enquanto um trem a vapor avança sobre uma ponte da ferrovia. O quadro é sobre a emoção da velocidade, mas contém um enigma. Será que a lebre, mal visível no canto inferior direito do quadro, está correndo na frente do trem ou fugindo aterrorizada? Trata-se de uma paisagem vista através da chuva, contrastando com o vapor e o fumo de uma locomotiva, sendo o resultado da cuidadosa observação direta e pessoal de Turner.  A locomotiva negra e a massa incandescente à frente impelida pela caldeira, levada à potência máxima, emergindo de uma cortina de chuva. Viajando à janela de um comboio que atravessava uma ponte sobre o Rio Tâmisa, Turner reteve na mente a imagem e não hesitou, logo depois, em sentar-se durante quinze minutos sob forte chuva, com os olhos fechados, para poder guardar fielmente tudo quanto tinha observado. Esta ponte fazia parte da linha Great Western de Londres a Brisol e era então considerada como uma proeza arquitetônica. É uma composição de contrastes apresentando a mutação do mundo e da paisagem, com o fim da vida tranquila da era agrária e início a era industrial. Joseph Mallord William Turner é um dos maiores pintores de paisagens. Um talento precoce, ele começou a viajar para desenhar vistas pitorescas já na adolescência.  No início dos anos 1800, integrava a Royal Academy e tinha uma carreira florescente, produzindo paisagens ambiciosas à maneira dos Grandes Mestres, como Claude Lorrain.  Aos poucos, porém, sua abordagem de paisagens e marinhas se tornou mais dramática e romântica. Ele viajou pelo continente europeu várias vezes, pintando na França, Alemanha, Suíça, Holanda e Itália.  Em suas duas últimas décadas de vida, sua pintura se tornou cada vez mais livre, às vezes quase abstrata, com detalhes obliterados pela cor e pela luz.
