Oh my god okay so we all remember this part of Hollow Mind, right?
Tumblr media
This obviously means that the rest of the grimwalkers, while maybe sharing traits with Caleb, didn’t look as identical to him as Hunter does.
Now I’m no biologist but I have a basic understanding of punnet squares. Our phenotypes are more or less randomly selected during fertilization and they’re passed from parents to kid. And if you have the same parents as your siblings, then you’re more likely to look like them or share traits with them. The only reason you have different traits is because there are so many to choose from and hey, you have brown hair and your sibling has blonde. That’s just how it turned out but you still carry the genes for blonde hair (not a perfect example but we’re also talking about a magical world so whatever)
What if one day Belos was making a new grimwalker. It’s no big deal; He’s done this about a dozen times now. Every single one is looking less and less like him, and Belos is getting increasingly frustrated. He keeps them around because, well, Caleb only had 206 bones and he can only make so many grimwalkers. Might as well manipulate the ones you have, right?
Belos completes the ritual and he stands at the head of the grave as the grimwalker sits up straight from the dirt.
And it’s the striking image of teenage Philip.
He kills that one quickly and doesn’t make another for a while. (Tags)

How about hexsquad (separately) reacting to reader flinching because of them? Like full on head cover n stuff
-Eclipse Anon
As this is relatively short and sweet, I decided to just pop my thoughts in here rather than making an entirely separate post. The cause for the reader being afraid or flinching away is left pretty ambiguous, so feel free to interpret the lead up however you want.
Thoughts under the cut!
Amity Blight
she’d feel absolutely terrible and so ashamed of herself for the fact that you felt the need to protect yourself from her. amity would never hurt you and she thought you knew that — but clearly she was wrong. she’ll stop whatever it is she’s doing and will immediately tear up and start apologising, practically sobbing when she decides to walk away. she doesn’t want to scare you any further so she’ll remove herself from the situation until you’re ready to talk to her — but she may never forgive herself for making you fear her. she feels like her mother and she hates it.
Gus Porter
he has no idea how to react to you flinching away from him because nobody has ever been that scared around him before. and the fact that it’s happening with you makes him feel a thousand times worse. gus stumbles over his words and his feet as he rushes to comfort you and apologise, promising to never do what scared you again for as long as he lived — just please look at him. does a lot of work to make sure this never happens again, but carries the guilt of it around with him for a long time afterwards.
Hunter Wittebane
he’ll freeze on the spot when he sees you cowering away from him and flinching away from his touch — you look so much like he did back when he was under his uncle’s control. and that breaks his heart. he doesn’t know what to say to make it better and he feels so disgusted with himself that he can’t comprehend it. he’d probably end up fetching darius or a friend to comfort you whilst removing himself — but i don’t think this is something he’d be able to recover from any time soon.
Luz Noceda
she’ll immediately stop what she’s doing and go to comfort you. she’s fearful and apologising, repeating that she never meant to scare you and that she’d never hurt you — not in a billion years. luz is so gentle with you whilst she’s trying to calm you down from your fear, in her faint touches and shaky but loving voice, and she’s successful. she talks you down and you two have a conversation about boundaries and concerns so you never have to experience this again.
Willow Park
she knows that she can be intimidating sometimes, but she never thought that there was even a possibility of you being afraid of her — which was clearly a miscalculation on her end. her immediate response is to stop talking and assess the situation before going to comfort you. willow coaxes you into looking at her so she can apologise properly and she’ll ask if you want to talk about it. but either way she’s as patient as ever and accepts her part in your response with guilt and grace.

Hush Little Baby, Don't Say a Word
Original story
Ao3 version
Mrs. Bartlett, a middle-aged widow who lived close by, was standing outside the door of the Wittebane household.
A smile of gratitude graced her face as she saw Madeline, her bundle of joy, being cradled with such care by her amazing sitter.
"I can't thank you enough for this," she said, expressing her sincerity to Caleb.
In an eerie town like Gravesfield, it was difficult to find a suitable sitter since certain people within the community just couldn't be trusted.
Luckily, Mrs. Bartlett found someone who could.
The older woman had heard nothing but good things about Caleb and once even saw the teen caring for a smaller boy with brown hair in public.
She knew without a doubt that her little girl was in good hands.
"No need to," Caleb reassured, returning her smile. "I'm just happy to be of assistance."
He knew that losing a loved one and being left with the responsibility of caring for a child wasn't easy, and was something he could empathize with since he had lost both of his parents.
"I'll be back in the evening," Mrs. Bartlett informs before leaning down to press the softest kiss against her baby's forehead.
This caused her to smile as she giggled at her mother's tender affection.
"Be good, my darling," she whispered sweetly in Madeline’s little ear before departing.
Once he waves the widow off, Caleb closes the front door and gazes down at the smiling infant in his care.
Sending her a smile back, he gives her button nose a small boop, and a storm of giggles immediately bubble out of her.
Caleb chuckled softly.
He had a feeling that he and Madeline were going to get along swimmingly.
...
As soon as thirty seconds pass, chaos ensues without delay.
The house was in a state of disarry as Madeline wailed loudly on the sitting room rug while Caleb took cover behind the flipped supper table.
She apparently didn't like any of the new toys that Caleb had carved for her and decided to go on a throwing spree, aiming them all at him.
After peering slightly from the side of the table, Caleb noticed that Madeline had run out of toys to throw.
He slowly got up and approached her in a gentle manner.
Scooping Madeline up, Caleb held her close to him.
He makes an effort to soothe her to the fullest extent of his ability, gently stroking her back.
"There, there, Madeline. It's okay," he whispered.
There's a possibility that she was hungry and needed some food.
...
An overly exhausted Caleb was seated in the sitting room rocking chair with a greenish orange vomit stain on the shoulder of his white shirt as he rocked back and forth rhythmically, still trying to simmer down Madeline's cries as he held her.
He had made sure to make a mental note not to feed Madeline mashed vegetables ever again.
The front door begins to open.
"Caleb, Caleb, Caleb!" A cheerful Philip steps through.
"I-," His speaking comes to an abrupt stop when he spots his brother with a baby.
"I'm an uncle now?" Philip asked.
Caleb replies with a slow head shake. "I'm in charge of her for the afternoon, Pip. Her name his Madeline," Caleb explained.
A sharp shrill is let out by Madeline, startling both brothers.
Caleb sighed as he continued. "I can't get her to stop crying, and her mother won't be back for her until the evening."
Handing Mrs. Bartlett an unhappy baby was not something he wanted to do.
"Hmm...," Philip hummed, trying to think up a solution.
Suddenly, an idea strikes him as he grins in excitement.
"Ooo, can I try something, Caleb?" Philip asked, making grabbing motions at Madeline. "I think I can make her stop crying!"
"I don't know, Philip…"
Caleb was hesitant to give Madeline up to his brother.
He feared he would accidentally drop her, which would only make things worse.
"Please, Caleb?" Philip innocently pleads, pressing his palms together.
"Please, please, please? Pretty please? I promise I'll be nice and gentle with her."
The elder exhales.
"Okay, fine," he said, giving into the pleads.
He stands up.
"But you'll have to sit down," Caleb told him.
After Philip takes a seat in the rocking chair, Madeline is gently placed in his possession.
Clutching her close, he straightens his legs and gently rocks back and forth.
"He might not be a baby, but Kitty likes it when I sing to him a lullaby at night after he has a nightmare. It always makes him feel a thousand times better!" Philip beamed, believing his song would have the same effect on Madeline.
Taking a deep breath in and letting it out, he began to sing his berceuse, or rather, scream it out.
Although his voice was loud and growly, it possessed an adorable and unique charm to it.
Caleb's eyes widened as a feeling of panic gripped him, but then he quickly noticed something that genuinely surprised him.
Madeline had stopped crying as her eyes lit up at Philip, captivated by his voice.
Finishing his lullaby with a bang, Philip looked down and saw Madeline sound asleep in his arms.
He smiled at his brother.
"See?" Philip whispered, pointing at Madeline. "She stopped crying!"
Caleb nods. "I see, I see," he whispered back with a tired smile.
He began to breathe easily once more.

Hubris Bracket Side A Poll 8: Emperor Belos/Phillip Wittebane (The Owl House) vs Jonah Magnus/Elias Bouchard (The Magnus Archives)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda below (contains spoilers)
Emperor Belos/Phillip Wittebane
Tumblr media
A lot of Phillip's character has to do with his pride. He believes he is greater than the witches and demons of the boiling isle. He views himself as a savoir and god-like figure and in the end it gets him killed.
to quote a textpost i have saved (credit @/vyvilha and @/vivid-bluez): "emperor belos is literally one of the most characters ever. like. you don't get it. he's a 400 years old puritan. he is the most powerful witch that ever lived. he's a Creature. he thinks of himself as a savior of humanity. he killed 50 children. he possesed the body of God. he bit a person with his bare teeth. once he got hit by a car. his name is philip and he's from connecticut" "He died by getting curb stomped by two middle aged gay people and the son of a god."
Jonah Magnus/Elias Bouchard
Tumblr media
This man found out about the Fears, spent a good amount of time researching and studying them, started to follow the Eye and was told by literally all of his peers to FUCKING STOP WHAT ARE YOU DOING and still decided to become immortal by implanting his eyes into other people. Then he saw how every ritual was failing and went "ok yeah but I can do it better" and then played the long game for 200 years and then actually succeeded in bringing about the apocalypse. Only to essentially be completely taken over by the Eye leaving him completely powerless in himself and unaware of what was going on and either not realize or realize too late that the entire time he was being manipulated by the Web.
Bastard. Rat man. Loser

Obsessed with the roller skates / council boy Huntlow thing!
Accept this gift of mine💚💛
Basically Dana tweeted somthing bout FANART and willow in roller skates, hunter wearing this school representative council looking shirt. Willow= baddie. Hunter= stern but sweet.
So here’s a little thing.
_____________
Early morning sunshine danced through the quad of Hexside High School, brightening the mood of the area as it reached it's way into the hallways via windows.
Hunter looked down the hallway in pride. Clean as its ever been. He smiled to himself.
Right, another school will be here today so I have to keep this place looking-
"AHh- oOf!" Willow grunted as she fell over. Hunter turned around to find Willow, the only one who just will not follow the rules, upside down on the ground, in her usual dress code violation choice of clothing. White school shirt with the black pants and grey skirt, a large green bow on her shirt.
And her bright yellow rollerskates.
"Miss Park, you know you aren't allowed to wear those!" Hunter scoffed as he helped her up. She smiled at him and replied.
"Oh but Mr. Wittebane, I don't want to be late to class." She mocked him slightly, adding her usual playful tone into the mix. Hunter's ears went red
Titan-damn you. What have you done to me?
"Find another way." he remained stern, but Willow knew his mind was freaking out.
"Hmmm... no." Willow smirked, leaning up against him. "I don't think I will."
Hunter turned away as his blush tried to give him away.
"I could give you a detention at any time-"
"Do it." Willow snorted. "Go on."
Hunter paused. He looked at her and frowned.
"You have a lunchtime detention today." he said.
"And what if I don't show up." Willow asked, popping the 'p' sound. The blondie whined in annoyance. He couldn't even give her detention.
I DO NOT LIKE HER! He repeated to himself. That was a complete lie, he couldn't stop himself from seeing sparkles and bubbles around her, and he knew it, but he didn't want to admit it. He knew this is why she got away with breaking rules, he knew this is why she was so rebellious. She knew he couldn't get himself to throw her into detention. He hoped she didn't know why.
"Get to class!" he snapped, mad at himself more than her. She smirked, knowing she'd won the argument once again, and roller skated to class.
__LUNCH TIME
Willow rolled down the hallway.
"Miss Park you aren't allowed to wear-"
"This that all you know how to say?" Willow interrupted, giggling. Hunter rolled his eyes.
"It seems to be all I need to know how to say." He snapped. She giggled.
"Look, Blondie, you can throw me in detention, or you can sit there sulking. Do one." Willow challenged. Hunter growled lowly, knowing exactly which one he was going to end up doing. He looked at her sulkily, and she just smiled her usual 'I'm better than you' smile.
Or that's what Hunter thought it was.
She smirked at him before roller skating away to the cafeteria. Ugh! Why couldn't he do anything? The school would be perfect if he was just a bit less emotional. She was just a classmate! She was nothing more but another student that sat with him in classes! Nothing more, and never will be anything more. He leant up against the locker, silently cursing himself. After what he thought was five minutes but in reality was the entire 20 minutes, the class bell rang.
"Oh, I'm so stupid.." he hissed at himself. Third period and he forgot to eat, too busy thinking about how perfect he was without Willow.
He walked to class with a sulky look, knowing he did not want the school to be messed up before the other school comes. Surely one student couldn't mess up a whole school.. right?
He sat down in class, and Willow came and sat down next to him.
"You're grumpy." She commented. He whipped his head to her.
"I forgot to eat." He snapped quietly, not really feeling to interact at the current moment. Willow tilted her head to the side in confusion.
"Don't you pack lunch? Just eat in class, no one cares." Willow suggested. Hunter wanted to slap himself across the face.
"I do not pack lunch.. I feed off the cafeteria. It's fine, I don't eat over the weekend much anyways, I'll live." He muttered. Willows eyes went wide.
"You don't eat on the weekend?" She asked, alarm raking her voice unexpectedly, caught off guard by his statement.
"N-no I do! I just don't eat much." He explained. And what he meant by that was he stole leftovers from the cafeteria and took them home, which he eats on the weekend. And whatever edible plants he can find. Otherwise it was just bread and water.
"Oh." She started. She opened her bag and pulled out what looked like two pieces of bread put together.
"Have this." She smiled. Hunter looked at her, then the bread.
"Why are you being nice to me?" He asked.
"Why not?" She shrugged, putting the sandwich on his table. He looked at her, then the bread again. At least it was something...
He took a bit out of the bread and he had the most delighted look on his face. Willow wished she could've taken a photo. She'd never seen him smile before. Guess he liked chicken.
"Willow, what is this?" He asked, forgetting all about why he was grumpy in the first place.
"Chicken?" She answered. You could see the sparkles in Hunters eyes.
"I love chicken!" He exclaimed quietly, eating the rest of the sandwich very quickly. He looked like a puppy. His magenta eyes seemed bigger, and like they had sparkles in them. He had a smile she'd never seen, but really, she'd never seen him even smile before. She couldn't help but admire him. Out of context it would sound weird, admiring a cute guy eat a sandwich, but in context...
He looked back at her, who still had the head-over-heels look on her face, resting her face on her hand, rested against the table.
"You ok?" He asked.
"I've never seen you smile before." She said with a hint of dream in her voice, just to play with his feelings.
The look of realisation when Willow told him he was smiling sent butterflies through her stomach. He attempted to act all stern again.
"Thank you for the chicken-bread, Miss Park." He looked at her once again. She was smirking like crazy.
"Call me Willow, please." She purred. His face went a bit red, as did his ears. His cleared his voice and tried to catch up with the work he'd missed before the next bell rang.
“Also it’s called a sandwich, silly.” She smiled in amusement, as Hunter’s grumpy look returned after being corrected by her.
Should I do part 2?
Edit: just needed to add the fact the way Hunter looks is how Callum looks when he says “IM A MAGE!” In The Dragon Prince. Those eyes.
Also if you want more fluff like this, I have a Wattpad account:

Can a Wittebane special ever air on Disney Channel? I wonder how they will tackle the religious themes and murder of Caleb while keeping it Child friendly.
HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Oh, wait, you actually think it'd focus on Philip?
Sorry for the mocking statements but that is the long and short of it. To keep it child friendly, for what is most compelling, and for what would be most in line with TOH, the way a Wittebane special would go is actually pretty easy to map out, at least with the moments that we know about:
You start with a teenage boy looking gaunt and exhausted as he prepares for a day in the woods to forage for things that he can get and wood to chop. He needs to make money for him and his little brother, Philip, after all. He hasn't really gotten to eat much more than scraps for the past couple days but hey, that's okay. Philip gets to eat and that's all the nourishment Caleb needs. He wants his little brother to have a proper childhood and he'll give up anything for that.
While out in the woods that day though, he catches a smell. An absolutely divine smell. He follows it to its source and finds a woman in a cloak feeding the animals of the area. The bread she has smells like heaven but how she speaks to the animals reeks of the devil. His stomach gives him away though and she turns with a wry grin. She isn't afraid of him but intrigued because he didn't immediately attack, something she calls out when he won't eat her bread because of his suspicions. They strike a deal that Evelyn will tell him a truth in return for the bread. That way he knows his soul isn't the price of it. "Are you a witch?" "Yes." And that moment of pure honesty makes Caleb pause. Then he runs. He runs fast and hard, racing back to town to be sure that he can tell everyone and potentially get his brother away. To keep him safe from that which threatens them all. However, he is stopped by the fact that his little brother is sobbing and soaked. One of the other kids tricked him into the river and said they shouldn't have bother to be washed up onto the shore. They should have just drowned in the ocean because if God wanted them, they would still have... have... Caleb holds him tight before looking at the sole remaining photo he has of all four of them. The next day he is in mass, his leg shaking as he listens to the fire and brimstone the preacher speaks of. He can't focus on the words though. Not as he looks at how the kids that hurt Philip are at the front of the pews while they sit in the back because no one wants them near them. There's anger and hate in this room and it gnaws at his gut just as badly as his hunger does.
And so now we get some time of Philip and Evelyn bonding, romancing and we see the seasons pass in a sweet, effective montage to speedrun their romance, especially if this is just a 44 minute special or the like, let alone if it's 22. This montage could easily also show how the two growing older and contrast Caleb's joys of embracing the other with Philip's growing anger as he spends time in town and is indoctrinated, all without having to say what he is being indoctrinated for besides imagery of burning fires.
Then finally, we have Evelyn asking when Caleb plans to tell his brother. Caleb doesn't know. At first it was to make sure Evelyn was actually safe. Then never finding the right time because of fear of someone in town hearing. Now... Now Philip is so converted to witch hunting that he doesn't know what to do. They're even considering making his little brother witch hunter general because of just how committed he is. Caleb feels defeated and tired and all he really feels like he has left is Evelyn.
"Well... Maybe it's time to find your own path then. Your brother will be fine at your home and... And maybe you'll be fine at mine. With the rest of the witches."
It then cuts to Philip, furious, slamming open the door to the house. He has a ritual dagger in his hand... Because he has been named a lead hunter while one of those brats from when they were younger is Witch Hunter General. Just another time where the town decided to choose the people over parents than him. Over the one with the purest soul in town. At least, he thinks as he picks up the family photo and tries to calm himself, one of them. He needs his brother. He's gone again. He wishes Caleb would let him take care of him now. He makes enough money through the church to support them after all. He doesn't have to keep risking his life in the woods anymore.
"With the rest of the witches."
Philip's heart sinks. What? Who is this woman? He's never seen her? Wait, if she's with the witches, his brother is in danger! But the rest of them? If he waits for them to go he can find all of them and they'll HAVE to make him witch hunter general! But that means risking Caleb's life. He can't allow that, even for his own-
"You're right. Philip will just be happier here and... And maybe just best that I vanish. He'll just blame a witch for it anyways and trying to say goodbye would only put as all in danger." Tears come down Philip's face and his knuckles turn white as rain begins. A familiar door opens up next to Evelyn and she turns the key we all know in it. The shine of the portal illuminates Philip's face before a bolt of lightning has it change to Belos' mask and the special ends.
And that's it. It isn't a fun version of it but there's literally no version of the Wittebanes, without major retcons, that can be told in a fun way. They are orphans from a super conservative colony who majored in witch hunting before then having a schism between them be formed due to that witch hunting. This potentially, because it's up to interpretation, led to Philip killing Caleb. Bare minimum, something happens to Caleb that leads to him being dead and haunting his brother while Philip is left stranded on the Isles with no way of going back without finding his own way. The only part of that story that could be fun or comedic is the romance plotline with Evelyn and Caleb. It's also the one that allows the most to be left in obscurity about Belos, thus enabling the show not to contradict its own lore that way. Worse yet, it's also just the best story to tell there besides the rise of witch hunter Belos but those themes are indeed incredibly dark and SUPER not fun to tackle directly so it's better that it happens mostly off screen. Also, you know, it makes sure that the show doesn't glorify bigotry and hate by having us see the rise of Philip into bigoted witch hunter from his perspective. Instead, the story focuses on being critical of such things and accepting the other, which is theoretically in line with TOH in general.
It could be an effective special but I don't think it'd end up being what Belos fans want and for people who don't like Belos, the most they'll get out of it is ANOTHER quirky romance from TOH that mirrors Huntlow too much to feel unique or special. In other words, it's mostly a lose lose situation, especially since none of these elements will make the base story any deeper. It'll just add to the confusion some feel for the fact that they believe Belos is a victim and a product of his society who has a sympathetic reason for his anger but then is just a one note, pure evil villain in the main show.
This is honestly the problem with almost anything that addresses anything we saw in the show. The contradictory nature of the base product's writing, and how it slaughtered concepts at the root, means that expanding on these concepts can only make the contradictions worse. It can only make the base work worse or have MORE people screaming "WHY WASN'T THIS INCLUDED!?"
It's like how me and my Discord finally settled on one option for a lore book that could actually work for TOH if they wanted to release one for the show: One that tells us all about the Isles we didn't see. We see so little of it after all that just telling us about all these neat towns, the ways they operate, or expanding on the forms of magic that never got to do anything, could be neat. It doesn't fix the base show's lack of creativity or consistency but it doesn't inherently conflict with it either. It would just be there as harmless lore that also would have a bad hook for any readers because unlike the journals for Gravity Falls or Amphibia, they wouldn't expand on a character or the like.
The best route for TOH to go is to pull a Harry Potter, again (I hate how often this show forces me to bring up that stupid series) and make Fantastical Beasts and Where to Find Them. Either the movie or the book as either are at best tangentially related to the series but mostly just have the name of the series on them for brand recognition because the authors of both works didn't make a good enough world to actually tell anything more compelling within it after the story was done. Not without making the base product look worse.
And that includes the story of the Wittebanes.
======+++++======
What sucks is that I actually do like the plot I wrote up for the Wittebanes. Like this could genuinely be a really interesting story to make. However A: I wouldn't do fanfiction for it because of the requirement of one killing the other eventually that effectively demands no nuance between Caleb and Philip, forcing their dynamic to be very basic and B: it still suffers from having to be basic because Belos is a basic bitch evil guy while all signs from the show point to Caleb having been an absolute paragon. I made him about as gray as I could in my write up and it's still not much.
I have a public Discord for any and all who want to join!
I also have an Amazon page for all of my original works in various forms of character focused romances from cute, teenage romance to erotica series of my past. I have an Ao3 for my fanfiction projects as well if that catches your fancy instead. If you want to hang out with me, I stream from time to time and love to chat with chat.
A Twitter you can follow too

The Wittebane brothers are on my mind currently and do you ever think about the fact Philip loved and resented his brother so much that he was willing to kill him, remove his existence from the world, but was also unable to live without him? He couldn’t bear to part from his brother when they were supposed to be in this together, forever, just like Caleb said. Yet he was the reason they parted in the first place.
He is a walking mess of contradictions.
I feel like there was some buried resentment before Caleb fell in love with a witch, and my best guesses are jealousy and envy. I am very on board with the scapegoat Philip and golden child Caleb take so of course Philip would want to prove he can be just as good as his brother too. Wittewife was the last straw that unleashed all that built up hatred. Philip was punished all his life for being the bad one, and Caleb praised for being the good one, yet here he was falling for a servant of satan, the father of her child no less!
I will never stop thinking about their relationship it has so many layers to it.

I’ve been thinking about the timeline of the Wittebane brothers some more after talking with @sepublic and some friends on the TOH server, and I think I might have pieced together what happened back when the brothers disappeared.
With the first painting, it appears that that was the brothers' first encounter with Evelyn, as it would have taken time to either build or modify the archway, Philip's facial features and hair between the two paintings suggesting several months/years had passed before his presumed arrival to the Demon Realm, and how Philip couldn't have immediately followed Caleb or else Gravesfield wouldn't have a legend about the brothers in the first place.
As such, it could be Caleb and especially Philip drove Evelyn off during their first encounter, but unbeknownst to Philip, Caleb and Evelyn had made a connection during the meeting - particularly with Caleb convincing Philip not to tell anyone about meeting a witch in the woods. Over the next several months/years, Caleb and Evelyn would continue to meet in secret with a few trips to the Demon Realm at some point and falling in love. Eventually, Caleb came to the decision that he wanted to live in the Demon Realm permanently and be with Evelyn, never to return.
There, Caleb came clean to Philip about what he had been doing in secret ever since they met a real witch a while ago, talked about the incredible world where he would be living now, and asked if his brother and only other family member would come along before he left.
Since the jacket that Philip wears from the second painting to the present used to be Caleb's, perhaps it had been either handed down to Philip as clothes, or - as a friend suggested on Discord - maybe the jacket was part of a witch hunter's outfit that Caleb wanted to leave behind.
Tumblr media
However, anticipating that Philip might take the revelation badly, Caleb made and hid several rebuses and vials of Titan blood around Old Gravesfield so that if Philip changes his mind, he can follow them to the Demon Realm himself. After all, it appears as though Caleb had had quite an affinity for owls that left a strong impression upon his brother, and just like the rest of Old Gravesfield would have likely been well versed in making rebuses/familiar with the town's layout:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, Philip took the news of his brother's departure badly and maybe was unable to stop it, and told the rest of the town what happened before setting out to "rescue" his brother, wearing the jacket of a witch hunter in pursuit. Thus, both brothers disappeared and were never to be seen again - one out of their own choice to be with the witch they loved, the other on a mission to bring their brother "back home."
Holding this speculative timeline in mind as well as the passage of time for Philip's beard to grow out, it sure makes Caleb's elated expression and heartfelt embrace of his brother in the following paintings all the more tragic:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's not just Caleb seeing his brother after being separated for a while, this is Caleb who had left the Human Realm behind on likely a bad note with his brother. Caleb who despite the possibility that Philip wouldn't follow him through - still held onto the hope that his brother would come to be with him and change his mind after however long it took for them to reunite. Caleb who overlooked the possible witch hunter's outfit out of happiness at seeing that his brother "HAD" changed his mind.
Then just like fire creating the smoke along the left edge of the first painting, that happy reunion went down in flames...

Algea
Chapter 1
Algea: personified spirits of pain and suffering–body and mind–, grief, sorrow and distress. The bringers of weeping and tears.
Stranded in a world not her own, Luz works to make a way home while the Boiling Isles struggle under the rule of Emperor Belos. It won't be easy, but with the support of her friends and found family she feels there's nothing she can't do.
Then random chance and careless spite collide into an act of unimaginable cruelty, leaving multiple lives shattered.
Luz is devastated but there’s no time to pick up the pieces. The Emperor's tightening his grip, and Luz and her friends have to push their own pain aside and pull themselves together if they want to prevent the ultimate tragedy.
The day of Unity is fast approaching and they have a plan to stop it, but their allies are few and their enemies are many, and they have plenty of tricks of their own. Hardship haunts them at every turn, their group suffering loss after loss as they struggle forward. Each time they manage to pull through, but their hope is steadily eroding. And their own survival may not be the benchmark they can use to measure victory.
For there are many fates that are far worse than death.

Luz headed down the trail leading away from the overlook, Amity walking right beside her, their fingers entwined. Everytime Luz actually thought about that her heart gave a little flutter.
She hadn’t been able to do her tradition today, go to her dad’s grave with her mom. Spend the day together, talking about all the happy memories they had of him.
Amity’s fingers tightened ever so slightly against her own, giddy butterflies bursting to life in her chest.
But today had worked in its own way.
Reluctantly, Luz slowed to a stop as they came to where the path split “So…you probably need to be getting home now,”
“Actually…” Amity turned towards her “Do you think I could stay over at the owl house tonight? Today was a lot, and I’m not sure I’m ready to go back home to dad…and mom,”
“I’ll have to check with Eda but I think that should be fine! You can sleep on the couch, you might have to deal with one of Hooty’s midnight musical numbers but other than that there shouldn’t be a problem,”
Amity let out a laugh “Midnight musicals, good one,”
Luz just blinked back at her.
“Wait was that…not a joke?”
A short while later the two of them walked through the door into the owl house.
“Eda!” Luz shouted with a hand cupped around her mouth “Can Amity stay the night tonight?”
“Yeah that’s fine,” Eda shouted back from the kitchen “We’ll have to shuffle the sleeping arrangements though, we have another guest,”
Luz turned towards Amity, the two sharing a curious look “Another guest?”
They hurried back to the kitchen, spotting Eda talking with–
“Oh hey aunt Lilith,”
“Wait Lilith!?” Amity whipped back and forth between Luz and the bespeckled puffy haired witch sitting at the table “Aunt!?”
“Oh hello, yes it’s me,” Lilith gave them a little wave.
Amity looked her up and down “I…I didn’t recognize you,”
“I suppose I have changed quite a bit. Ever since leaving the Emperor’s Coven I’ve been working hard to shake off the shackles of conformity and step up as a Bad Girl Historian and Cool Aunt to Eda’s wards,”
“Yeah! Just last week we went back in time to meet the journal author,”
“What!?” Amity whirled back on her, eyes blown wide “You met Philip Wittebane!?”
“Yeah, he turned out to be a jerk though,”
“I punched him in the face,” Lilith said primly.
Amity whipped her head back and forth between Lilith and Luz, mouth working open and shut.
“Alright I’m turning in and leaving you nerds to it,” Eda pushed away from the table and stood “Lily you ok with bunking in the nest with me so Boots can take the couch?”
“Yes that should be fine,”
“Alright, goodnight nerds, have fun with your nerd talk,” she turned and started heading towards the stairs, leaving the three of them in the kitchen.
“Hang on just a second…” Amity shakily took a seat across from Lilith “You guys actually went back in time,”
“Yup,” Luz sat down next to her “We used the time pools,”
“I thought those were an urban legend, next you’ll be telling me possums are real,”
“While possums might be a myth I can assure you that time pools are very real,” Lilith stood and pulled down a large chart from the top of the wall, on it was a drawing of a large pool of water, to the left of the pool was an illustration of a dripping blue liquid, to the right a mossy green mass. Both them them helpfully captioned ‘Titan’s blood’ and ‘Boiling Algae’. Arrows from either picture pointed towards the center of the chart, swirling together into the picture of the time pool.
Amity blinked “Wait, did you already have that set up…or do you just carry it with you…?”
“Yeah she’s been doing that a lot lately,” Luz leaned over and whispered to her “Apparently a good Bad Girl Historian is always prepared for a lecture,”
“You see time pools are formed by congealed titan’s blood mixing with prehistoric algae,” Lilith pointed towards the pool in the middle of the chart “The resulting composition is unstable, both chronologically and geographically, unlike other deposits of congealed titan’s blood, so not only can it provide windows through time, the physical location of these pools is constantly changing as well,”
“Hang on, other congealed titan’s blood!?” Luz shot up out of her seat “What other titan’s blood is out there?”
Lilith adjusted her glasses “Well not titan’s blood per say…”
She reached up and pulled down another chart, this one showing the titan’s skeleton lying in the boiling sea, but it was a cross section with various subterranean spaces visible, including the mine on the knee.
“When the titan fell in the boiling sea, sea water along with prehistoric forms of algae leaked into the titan’s body, forming the first non boiling lakes and rivers,” Lilith pointed to a large swath of purple on top of the titan’s pelvis “At the same time, large amounts of titan’s blood pooled and congealed in the lower areas of the titan’s body,” she traced her finger down, the purple of the pelvic lake turning into a deep turquoise as she traced the map of the water below sea level “Over time the algae consumed the pockets of the congealed titan’s blood, assimilating it into its physiology and permanently altering its biochemistry. Resulting in a host of different algae-blood amalgamations within the titan,”
“Wait…” Luz leaned forward, practically hanging over the table “Does that mean lakes and rivers could be portals through time to?”
“No,” Lilith’s finger lifted, tapping the tangled rib structure above the teal underground lake “Not only is congealed titan’s blood exceedingly dense, the algae it amalgamated with are a primarily subterranean species. As such all known amalgamations, time pools excepted, have settled deep underground. This combined with being filtered by the titan’s skeletal and vascular systems prevents algae-blood amalgamations from affecting the accessible levels of lakes and rivers,”
“Yeah,” Amity cut in “Like Lake Lacuna, it runs super deep in the middle, but aside from the razor eels the shallower areas are pretty safe, a lot of people go there for picnics and swimming,”
“Quite right, now this is also why titan’s blood has been historically mined at the knee,” Lilith tapped the picture of the knee “The elevation isolated it and prevented amalgamation with algae. Creating veins of pure titan’s blood. Now time pools are unique in that their shifting locations have brought them up to the surface and allowed some scant observations, but for the deeper deposits only trace samples have ever been recovered,” she turned back to them “Quite frankly there’s no telling what sort of properties these subterranean algae-blood amalgamations have,”
Luz sucked in a gasp “We should have a beach day tomorrow!”
Amity blinked in surprise for a moment, before a stray giggle escaped her “That was your main take away from that lecture?”
“I’ve been through the time pools before, but we’ve never had a beach day! And you said people go swimming at the shallow parts of Lake Lacuna, so let’s do it!”
“Well I for one am proud that I was able to deliver such a thorough lesson on short notice,” Lilith said with a satisfied nod, rolling up her charts with a snap “But it’s getting late and I must retire, so I’ll leave you to plan you delinquent outing,”
With that Lilith strode out of the room, Luz still buzzing with excitement beside Amity.
“We can have not-dogs, and invite Gus and Willow–”
Amity felt a bubbly warmth filling her chest, Luz’s sunny enthusiasm contagious, as she pulled out her scroll “I’ll shoot them a message on Penstagram,”
Only seconds after she sent it her scroll chimed with a reply.
Luz leaned in over her shoulder, the two of them reading the response “Willow says they can come after Flyer derby practice, and they want to know if the rest of the team can come,”
“Sure! The more the merrier!”
Amity laughed again, already composing the response.

Alador yawned and pushed back from his workbench, wincing as his spine popped. It had taken longer than he expected but he finally finished working out the prototype for the Abomatron. Normally he’d make a beeline to bed right now, so tomorrow he could start work on his next project bright and early, but tonight something made him drag his feet.
The situation with Amity and the brawl kept going through his head, one of the reasons it took him so long to finish the prototype plans.
Amity didn’t want to join the emperor’s coven, she didn’t want to join a coven at all. When did that happen?
He stood up, knees popping as well, discarding thoroughly stained apron and work gloves on the bench. The action so practiced he barely had to think about it, leaving his mind to dwell on other things.
As long as he’d known it had been Amity’s dream to succeed and rise high. To be the best of the best and do the Blight family proud.
Then again…how long had it been since he’d actually sat down and talked about her dreams with her?
There was the first day of her baby class, an abomination just a little bit taller than she was tottering after her as she ran down the path, proudly proclaiming that she wanted to create the biggest abomination ever, as big as the titan! But that was nearly ten years ago, surely they’d spoken more recently…
Alador searched his mind for any memory of such a thing, and to his dismay came up empty.
Guts lurching uncomfortably, he shut off the lights and headed upstairs. He hadn’t been meant to ignore Amity or the twins, he’d been busy with his work, and Odalia was always better at that sort of thing. He’d never been good at planning and networking, or anything that involved talking to people. Better to let Odalia handle those things; she was charming, intelligent, an absolute force of willpower. With her guidance their children were guaranteed a good future.
But maybe he’d taken things too far, delegated too much, and somewhere along the line he’d become so distant from his children that Alador barely knew them.
That thought made him unbearably sad.
Reaching the top of the stairs he paused with his foot in midair. Down the hall to the right was the small guest room he slept in when he couldn’t be bothered to shower after a long stretch of work. Odalia never banned him from their bedroom but she put her foot down when it came to abomination stains on the sheets. That’s where he should go, get some rest so he could be ready to start work on the Abomaton 3.0 tomorrow. But despite knowing that he found his attention pulled to the left….
After hesitating a few more moments, Alador turned and started heading down the hall to his left.
Maybe he wasn’t good at this, maybe Odalia was better at planning their childrens’ futures than he’d ever be, but that was no excuse not to at least try. And Alador wanted to know his children again.
Soon enough the door loomed in front of him, one Alador didn’t remember walking through in years. He raised a hand then hesitated, intestines twisting into knots.
Swallowing back the sensation, he forced back his nerves and rapped his knuckles against the wood.
After a few moments of unbearable silence Emira’s voice echoed out.
“Uh…come in?”
Alador cracked open the door and peeked inside. When the twins were born they’d shared a nursery, as they got older they’d moved into separate bedrooms, connected to either side of the original nursery. And the nursery had become a playroom, a way to isolate the destructive chaos of twin toddlers from the rest of the manor, and the twins’ favorite place to hang out.
To his relief that much hadn’t changed, while the decorations were more mature than he remembered. Each side of the room was decorated with what looked to be Edric and Emira’s tastes respectively, although there were strands of fairy lights and a small desk near the window that didn’t appear to match either style.
Edric and Emira were lounging on plush chairs on one side of the room, each of them looking up from their scrolls to stare at him quizzically.
“Hey…” Edric said slowly “Amity’s spending the night at the owl lady’s house, she’ll be back tomorrow.
Alador blinked “She is?”
How checked out was he? His youngest daughter wasn’t home and he didn't even notice. Was he really that little of a presence in his childrens’ life?
He gave a quick shake of his head to dispel the spiraling thoughts. For better and worse Amity had made it clear where he stood with her. Now it was time to clear the air with Emira and Edric.
“I didn’t come here to talk to Amity, I wanted to talk to you,”
Both twins glanced at each other “About what…” Emira said slowly.
“Oh just…” Alador stepped fully into the room and gently shut the door behind him “How are your studies going? Are you two still in the illusion track?”
The twins shared another look, silence stretching out longer and longer until Emira cleared her throat “Actually…I’ve been working on healing magic to,”
“Oh that’s…good,” he turned towards Edric “How about you,”
“I’ve been…checking out beastkeeping, and potions,”
Aladror started a bit “Wait, were you the one responsible for what happened to Warden Wrath at the brawl?”
Edric jerked in his seat, face flushing deep red “That wasn’t– I…uh…”
“Because that’s impressive,”
Now both twins jolted in surprise.
“Really…..?” Emira said hesitantly.
Alador felt his face grow hot. Was it really so unusual for him to take an interest in his children? Well if it was that was changing now.
Maybe he wasn’t good at this, but titan dammit no matter how bad he was Alador was going to be there for his kids.
“Tell me more about your beast potions,” he gingerly took a seat at an empty desk chair “And your healing illusions…”

Darius had to fight back a yawn as he made his way back to his quarters. With the day of unity fast approaching the workload was never ending, luckily he knew a shortcut through the back corridors to save him some time.
Spotting an ivory cloak and glint of gold as he rounded the corner, he felt his sour mood recede a bit, the beginnings of a smile curving on his lips. It looked like he wasn’t the only one using these back hallways tonight.
The Golden Guard, right hand to Emperor Belos himself, was hunched over in a corner partially hidden behind a column, unmasked and staring down at his scroll, the personal one Darius himself had given him, like it was a particularly challenging puzzle. Which to him it probably was.
He slowed to a stop, his presence still unnoticed “Having trouble little prince?”
Hunter jolted upright, whipping around to face him “I wasn’t– I was just–”
“Because it looks like you were using Penstagram to chat with your little Flyer Derby friends,”
His face flushed red all the way to the tips of his ears, shoving the scroll into his pocket with far more force than was needed “I was just…gathering intel. It’s not a distraction from my duties,”
Darius planted a hand on his hip and fought the urge to roll his eyes “You know the coven won’t come to a halt if you take an hour for yourself,”
“Wh…whether or not the coven can function without me is irrelevant, I have a responsibility to uphold and I can’t neglect my duties,”
A heavy sigh built in the back of Darius’ throat, but he bit it back before it could escape. Thanks to that whole debacle with the Flyer Derby players he knew there was an actual teenager inside that uptight shell, but he had to be coaxed out gently.
“Little Prince you work twice as hard as people more than double your age. Quite frankly you deserve a break,”
Hunter flinched a little bit at the word ‘deserve’ so slight Darius nearly missed it, but he continued without missing a beat “I don’t know what they taught you in scout training, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using your spare time to do something that makes you happy, even if it doesn’t contribute to the continuous progress of the empire,”
Gloved knuckles tightened around his staff as Hunter cautiously peeked up at him “You…think so?”
“I’m the head of one of the most profitable covens in the Boiling Isles,” Darius gave a good natured grin and reached out to ruffle his hair “I know so,”
Hunter blinked in surprise before reaching up to smooth his tousled hair “I guess if you’re sure, just…don’t tell uncle,”
“Of course,” Darius patted him on the shoulder “Now you better hurry, I know Kikimora uses these back halls to,”
“Understood,” Hunter turned and strode away, pivoting back to flash a quick wave as he went “Thank you Headwitch Darius,”
Darius gave a slow wave and a smile in return as he watched Hunter hurry down the corridor “Anytime,” he kept waving until Hunter vanished around the corner, pausing for a moment before lowering his hand and continuing on his way.
Maybe it made him a bad rebel to be giving pep talks to the Emperor’s right hand man, but Darius had never given a damn what other witches thought.
And besides it wasn’t as if he could recruit him for the rebellion. Hunter was a child, to say nothing of the conflict of interest…
That particular thought made the smile drop off his face.
Belos may be a tyrant but he was also Hunter’s uncle, and it was unreasonably cruel to ask a child to forsake his only family member for the good of the isles. For titan’s sake the only thing Hunter should be worried about was more outings with those little Flyer Derby friends of his. And if everything went according to plan, soon he would. Darius and the other rebels just had to keep their heads down and avoid raising suspicion until they took out Belos and stopped the day of unity. Honestly between the two of them they had so many worries that the Emperor finding out about his nephew’s hobbies was barely worth a second thought.
Sure Belos might not be happy about his nephew running off to play with other witches his age when he could be training or studying coven law. But he’d thrown tradition to the wind and raised his powerless teenage nephew to the role of Golden Guard. Belos clearly favored the boy, how angry could he actually be.

Luz Noceda and the Trials of Malphas
Ever wondered how did Luz managed to get Amity's job and staff library card back?
Tumblr media
Find out in this one-shot inspired by events from The Owl House Season 2 Episode 5 "Through The Looking Glass Ruins"
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tumblr media
It all happened so fast.
One moment, Amity Blight was helping Luz Noceda sneak into the Forbidden Stacks, a section of the library she worked at, in order to obtain Philip Wittebane’s diary, in the hopes that Luz would also, one day, show her around the human realm. The next, their excursion took a hard turn for the worst after Luz yells at a mouse that has chewed up a significant portion of the book. Malphas, the master librarian, appearing as an ominous monstrosity, grabs Luz and Amity and walks them both out of the library, where he then reverts back to a less-intimidating appearance of a hunch-back, humanoid bird-like being, with glowing yellow eyes, a beak, blue feathers covering his body, and gray wings. He was standing on top of a huge, floating book that read “STAFF” on its spine, purple smoke wafting from underneath. One of his hands covered his face, as he shook his head, in disbelief that he caught one of his best employees, Amity, getting into trouble.
“I'm just, like, super disappointed in you. Like, I can't even process these feelings right now. Gosh, it's so hard for me to say this, but like, you're fired.”, said the librarian. Amity tenses as Malphas magically takes her staff ID. The doors close heavily. Luz and Amity stare at them.
Tumblr media
Luz, attempting to apologize, says “Amity, I am so—”
Amity then cuts her off. “Not right now, Luz,” she says, in a disappointed tone, while beginning to tear up. Voice trembling, she continues “Everything's changed since you came here. Being around you, it makes me do stupid things, and I wish it didn't.”
Luz, also tearing up, nearly crying, answers “It's okay. I, uh… I do stupid things around you too, Amity.” Luz has effectively hinted that she likes Amity more than just a friend. She enjoys being with her, spending time with her, and after Amity’s mother Odalia used her as a test subject for their latest line of Abomatons, nearly getting herself killed in the process, is smitten after Amity comes to her rescue that night, getting her mother to undo Luz, Gus Porter, and Willow Park’s expulsion from the Hexside School of Magic and Demonics.
Amity then gasps upon hearing this. "I… think I need to go home." She runs off, heading home.
How could I be so stupid?! I knew this was a bad idea! But... getting that diary meant so much to Luz, but we blew it, and I lost my job! Yeah, maybe I do like her, maybe even more than just a friend. Luz Noceda, that human girl I once thought was some annoying poser. Impulsive Luz, always getting in over her head... but wow, she's determined, optimistic, genuinely kind, why can’t I stop thinking about her this way? She even offered to take me to the Human Realm... Oh Titan, I’ve never felt this way for someone before. Am I really falling for this girl? But still, I can’t believe it cost me my job! I'm such an idiot! What would mom and dad think? What would Ed and Em say?
Amity chastises herself. After what just happened, her mind was racing, tears were welling in her eyes, her face tomato-red in shame, as she heads back home to Blight Manor, hoping nobody could see her. Right now, all she wanted to do was just to confide in someone about these thoughts and feelings she’s having about Luz. She needs counsel from someone who’s been through these same things growing up…
Emira, she thought. Maybe Em can understand...
Back at the library, Luz, shamefully realizing she has hurt Amity’s feelings by getting her fired, cries, then takes a breath, slicks her hair back, and says to herself “Nada funcionará a menos que lo haga funcionar,” which means “Nothing will work unless you make it work,” in Spanish. Just like mamá used to tell me, she thought. She was a girl on a mission, to discover more about Philip Wittebane and the secrets to creating another portal door back to the Human Realm, and just recently, to win Amity’s affections. How stupid of me to get Amity fired. I can’t let this one slide! Now I’ll never make my way into her heart after this… I’ve got to make this right!, Luz thinks. She squares her shoulders and walks back into the library.
As Luz returns to the library, she has her eyes set out for Malphas. Whatever it takes, I need to get Amity her job back. She was only helping me out, and it’s not fair to leave her like this. I need to make this right, whatever it takes.
She eventually finds herself in Malphas’ office. Luz, not wasting any time, tells Malphas “Mr. Malphas…sir?,” she then introduces herself formally “I’m Luz. Luz Noceda. I’m a friend of Amity, and I humbly request that you please give Amity her job back. She was only helping me get a diary that was donated that’d help me travel back to the Human Realm where I’m from, and it’s my fault I got her fired. I yelled at this rat… thing that ate up the pages of his book, while we were sneaking around the Forbidden Stacks.” Luz paused, as she realized she was rambling, and might not be making any sense. She took another deep breath to compose herself, and continued “Point is, it’s not fair to Amity, and I need to make it up to her. I need to get her her job back.”
Malphas, upon hearing Luz’s story, responds “Ugh, that was, like, so dumb of you…,” he then sighs in exasperation, and continues “Very well. After all, Amity was, like, one of our best employees here, and I really appreciate that she’s passionate about reading to children. I never thought she would deliberately get herself in trouble.”
Malphas then begins to scratch his chin, thinking what would be the best way for Luz to prove herself, then says “Since you’re the reason Amity was fired, I think you should do some things for me, just for today. Like, I found it hard to get someone to take over Amity’s other tasks after she left... But first, you must undergo the Trials of Malphas, named after myself, of course.”
Curious, Luz asks “The… Trials of Malphas?”
“Yes. Came up with them myself, as a test to determine how worthy someone is to work in this library. Amity went through these very same trials and passed. Not surprising, since she’s the top student at Hexside, after all.”
Little miss perfect. Cool and smart, Luz thinks to herself, blushing slightly, in admiration of Amity.
“The trials involve me peering into your mind to learn more about your character, your experiences, and your actions interacting with other people, things, and events that happened,” Malphas explains. “Are you ready?”
Mind-reading to see how worthy am I to be a library employee? Kinda creepy, to be honest, Luz thinks. “Nope, but let’s do it anyway,” said Luz, determined, swinging her right fist sideways towards her left. For Amity, whatever it takes, went her mind.
Malphas’ eyes then began to glow, then he cast a blue spell circle. The last thing Luz saw was Malphas zooming into her eyes, then everything went blurry. Malphas, looking into her mind, sees Luz’s life as a student back in the Human Realm, her wild creative choices and exploits. She saw her onstage, enacting a scene in a play. "O happy dagger, give me death!" Luz declares, enacting a disembowelment, stabbing herself with a plastic spork and tossing links of raw sausage out of her midsection in place of actual organs, with the audience reacting in shock and disgust, her mother Camila laughing, saying “Her father taught her that!” in glee. They then both see a memory of her persuading Principal Bump to allow her to study all 9 tracks of magic, then the first time she learns the light glyph, getting into her first witches’ battle ever against Amity, then consoling her shortly she gets embarassed after after it was revealed that both of them were cheating, no thanks to the Clawthorne sisters Eda and Lilith, their respective mentors. Luz then shows her how she casts the light spell, drawing the glyph onto a notepad and tapping it. Her mind then rushes to the memory of her teaching Eda and Lilith how to perform glyph magic, once their magic abilities has been exhausted, rendering them both powerless.
“You have the potential to be a great teacher of glyph magic, Luz. Like, make a career out of it. Have you ever considered that?,” Malphas asks. Bashfully, Luz replies “I… may have considered it, once or twice.”
Luz’s mind rushes next to her first encounters with her friends. Malphas sees Luz meeting Willow and Gus for the first time, Luz posing as Willow’s abomination, saving Gus and Matt Tholomule from Hexside’s deadly detention pit, befriending Amity and helping her fix Willow’s memories in her mind, taking Amity’s place as Grom Queen, dancing with her as they beat the monster together, challenging Boscha to a Grudgby match in an effort to stop them from bullying her, Willow, and Gus. Next, her mind flashes back to when she squares off against Lilith and eventually allies herself with them in order to save Eda from petrification, blowing up the portal suitcase in the process, her only way home…
Malphas then exits Luz’s mind, then notices Luz has fallen unconscious. He rouses Luz, and tells her “You’re a misfit. A weirdo. But you’re very creative and expressive. You also have a knack for getting yourself into trouble. But I can see that you’re fiercely loyal to your friends and family, and I admire that. Like, seriously, you’ve got heart, kid. You pass.”
Luz, joyous upon hearing Malphas’ observations, jumps while pumping her fist, exclaiming “Yes!,” and Malpas quickly shushed her. “This is a library, don’t forget,” he reminded Luz.
After the trials were over, Malphas then instructed Luz to sort crates of newly-ordered books properly, according to their respective categories. Malphas, however, warned Luz that some of the books are man-eating ones, and that the library will not be held responsible for any injuries she may sustain. Luz shuddered in horror, noticing some books with teeth and claws lining their covers, bound shut by belts of leather, with pages ripped here and there, some even specked with bloodstains. Whoever unfortunate souls got their limbs chewed up by these books, she didn’t want to know how it happened. Luz sorted the books as instructed; fiction, non-fiction, songs and odes to the Titan, the history of The Boiling Isles, poetry, reference, all taking great care not to get bitten, but she still suffered a few scratches from some of the books.
After Luz recovered from the trouble of sorting the books as instructed, she was then tasked to tame a paper dragon, kept away in the lower levels of the library. Malphas then described how the paper dragon came to be, after some fool cursed a couple of books to have their pages rip themselves out and reassemble in the monstrous form of a 4-winged beast that towered at least 15 feet high, he describes.
“Since you’re human and have no inherent magical ability due to the lack of a bile sac, I understand you do glyph magic, am I correct?,” Malphas asks, and Luz nods in affirmation.
“The paper dragon can only be distracted if it is fed ink, as it will fall asleep shortly afterwards, but, like, for a short time only. Once you’ve tamed the beast, I need you to stick this glyph onto it,” he hands Luz a square sheet of parchment, written on it was a glyph she’s never seen before. “It’s a rare ancient glyph, whose effect is to dissipate any curse that causes inanimate objects to assemble themselves into a monstrous form.” Luz then takes out her smartphone and takes a quick picture of the glyph for her to copy once she gets back home to Eda and the rest.
“Got it, I’m ready!” Luz says, in anxious determination to face the beast. Every task done is one more step to getting Amity her job back!
Luz then descends into the lower rooms of the library, armed with nothing but a 20-gallon glass tank of ink and her pre-written glyphs ready in her pocket, Luz found herself in the entrance of a dimly-lit hall as wide as a football field, its ceiling as high as a theater's, lined with numerous 15-foot tall bookshelves, save for the space that the paper dragon takes up. The smell of mold and musty old books filled Luz’s nose.
The paper dragon was around as long as 3 school buses, and stood over Luz as tall as a Grudgby goal post. Its head was long and crocodilian, and lined with spikes of increasing length from its snout all the way to its eyelids. Its limbs were stout but muscular, its claws as long as chef’s knives, which all looked capable of doing more than just tiny paper cuts. Its skin resembled that of actual dragon scales, only that they were all patterned in a way that made it look like a living, breathing papier-mâché sculpture. It had 4 bat-like wings, all of which were folded. This big boy ain’t flying anywhere.
Luckily, the beast was preoccupied, its snout sniffing around the shelves behind it. Might be getting something to eat, Luz thinks, trying to reassure herself. Carefully, she tips the large glass ink container into a large metal basin, since her weak nerd arms are unable to lift the vessel, and carefully backs away so as to not catch the creature’s attention. The dragon should smell the ink by now, Luz thought, as she slowly crept towards one of the adjacent shelves to hide herself behind. She peeked at the dragon from one of the gaps between the books and the shelf, seeing that it’s making its way to the metal container. “It really was hungry,” she whispered to herself as the dragon ravenously lapped up the dark liquid. Shortly after, once the metal basin was emptied, the dragon lumbered its way back to its nest consisting of toppled and crushed shelves, and went to sleep.
“Now’s my chance. Come on, Luzura, let’s finish this, for Amity,” whispered Luz once more, pulling out the parchment sheet from her back pocket of her shorts. Gently, she tiptoed towards the sleeping beast, unaware of the rat skeleton she was about to step on, but then it was too late.
Luz’s foot has crushed bone, and with a resounding crack, the dragon opened one of its eyes and took notice of the human creeping up to it. It fully arose, snapping its maw at Luz, who dodged it in record time, the dragon’s teeth nearly snagging onto her shirt. Without thinking, Luz pocketed the parchment glyph, pulled out one of her own handwritten glyphs, held her breath, and slapped the piece of paper onto herself, becoming invisible to the creature. Oh Titan, I need to hold on, she thought, making a beeline for the farthest bookshelf away from the beast.
The dragon was on the prowl, seeming eager to taste human flesh, its long, muscular tail knocking over bookshelves at random. Luz had been so focused on the creature, she did not notice the wall near her was made entirely of some kind of precious jewel, and it reflected her image so well.
Luz then screamed in horror, as the dragon finally saw the reflection, charging towards it full speed ahead, only to crash headfirst into the gemstone wall, knocking itself out instantly. “Heh, just like in that movie ‘Dino Land,’ who would’ve thought that’d work?,” Luz said to herself, breathing a sigh of relief. Quickly, she pulled out the parchment she pocketed, slapped the dragon with it, and the glyph glowed a mix of bright blue and warm orange. It was using Illusion and Construction magic, like it could sense what made the curse! Luz’s eyes widened in amazement, then shortly, the dragon let out one last roar before it exploded in a mess of bright flashing light and scattering paper, which then zipped back to various books around the hall, reattaching themselves to where they were torn from, flying fast enough that some of the pages ended up grazing Luz in the cheek.
That was not fun, she thought, as she felt the sting from the paper cuts on her face.
Shortly after, she quickly dashed back to Malphas’ office, panting in exertion, wiping beads of sweat off her forehead before they made their way to the cuts on her face. Calling Malphas’ name, she informs him she has successfully vanquished the paper dragon, its soul free of its fibrous anchor.
“Wow, that's awesome! You’ve done well, Luz. Thanks!” said Malphas, creating a spell circle with one of his clawed fingers, then Amity’s staff card came out of one of the shelves in his office. “Good thing you got here soon. I couldn’t keep the rats from gnawing at it, like, they’re honestly so annoying. Also, I didn’t think that parchment glyph would still work, like, it’s really old and crusty. I felt like the magic embedded in it has started to leave.” “Oh!” Luz blurted, then awkwardly laughed upon hearing this. Farts, I could’ve died back there! What a relief it worked!
She then took Amity’s card hovering in front of Malphas seated on his desk, noticing the corners have been damaged, but Amity’s name, picture, and position as staff is still intact. “Tell Amity she can report back tomorrow. I’ll be expecting her,” Malphas told Luz.
“Thank you so much Mr. Malphas, sir! I’m sure Amity would be glad to be back!,” exclaimed Luz.
“But don’t you two dare get into any more trouble, or I’ll feed you to the bookworms.” Malphas added, in a firm tone, albeit half-joking. “And don’t pretend I haven’t noticed that you walk her home almost every night after her shift. Honestly, I think it’s sweet of you. Like, I can see why Amity likes you. She doesn’t say it, but she thinks you’re cool,” says Malphas, clicking his tongue while making a finger-gun gesture towards Luz, who then feels flustered at the mention of Amity and their friendship so far.
Luz then hurries back to Blight Manor, the sun has already begun to set on the Boiling Isles, painting her surroundings a blend of orange and purple. She doesn’t notice the lightly-colored mouse that clung to the back of her shirt, the very same mouse that chewed up Philip’s diary in the first place.

What if, here me out, Hunter's S/O was taller than him (a male S/O, if I may ask). Like, how would he feel about the roles reversing?
HUNTER WITTEBANE X TALL M!READER [FLUFF/ANGST HEADCANNONS]
Cuteee! I got another message in my inbox talking about how Hunter is actually pretty tall, like slightly shorter than Eda I think, so dang you’d need ✨h e i g h t✨
Tumblr media
-Okay, so I’ve mentioned in a previous post about a shorter!reader and Hunters size kink, and it stemmed from the feeling of protecting the other with their body, their height giving them the ability to protect.
-But just like my gender, it goes both ways.
-Everybody knows Hunter’s been hurt in many ways during his life, and one of the main stresses that were put on his body was battle.
-It was constant fighting, training session after training session, missions that would end bloody on both sides, and if he ever tried to stop, or god forbid, fail, he’d leave the throne room bloodier than a fight with the enemy from the people who were suppose to protect him.
-So having a boyfriend taller than him, although it’d make him feel bad about not being able to protect, guilt at not being the stronger, taller one, he’d feel so safe.
-Height is a big thing for him, whenever somebody use to tower over him, it was threatening, but with you it’s like being wrapped in a warm blanket of protection.
-He wouldn’t like teasing though, his face would go red and he might glare a little at you, and he’d rather die than admit it but a small pout would form on his lips, and depending on your point of view that might just spur you on further.
-He’d wiggle out from underneath your arm if you placed it on his head, leaning against his hair like a armrest, smirking like an asshole.
-He isn’t very beefy (clearly) so some insecurity would stem, he would want to be the stronger, taller one to keep you safe, he knows you can keep yourself safe, sure,
-But HE wants to do it, to prove that he’s worth it, worth all the baggage and trouble that comes with being his boyfriend, if he can protect you, than he has a purpose.
-Not only would he fight to protect you, but also to keep you.
-It would always swirl in the back of his mind, the only time it’d completely crumble away is when he’s in the midst of a panic, nightmare induced or not.
-Of course, being the loving boyfriend you are, you’d curl around him, pulling him flush against you, his sweaty clammy skin right against yours, and completely submerge his senses with you.
-He’d be crying, he hates crying in front of you, he already feels like he isn’t strong enough, he doesn’t want sobbing to degrade him even further.
-But when his senses get filled with your solid, warm presence, he’d only cry more, but tears of relief would merge with the despair, he’d feel so safe, so protected.
-It’s like you wipe away the bad memories, and he’d cling to you in a scramble for more of that warm safety, he’d want you to tower over him, to cover him from the stinging pain of the past.
-He wants to burrow into you and never come out, to hide underneath your arm, to be covered from all the bad things that he feels are still coming for him, things that still make him look over his shoulder.
-He’d never put you in harms way, of course, but for a little while, as he presses closer into you, surrounded by blankets and warmth and safety.
-He wants to pretend, just for a bit of time, that you can make all the bad go away.

sweet crush who he initially thought was cruel hcs ; hunter
Tumblr media
requested by ; anonymous (29/03/22)
fandom(s) ; the owl house
fandom masterlist(s) ; main | hunter only
character(s) ; hunter wittebane
outline ; “Hey, is it okay if I request a Hunter x Reader?
It’s kinda simple, the Reader joins the Emperor’s coven, are actually pretty good, and get some promotions to the point where they talk with the coven officials sometimes. Hunter thought they’d be ruthless or strict, since their reputation has mainly been for their strength. But once he meets them, he finds out that they’re actually a really sweet and gentle kind of person. They’re nice to him, and is open to giving him the space he needs, reassurance, all the things he never really received. I’d think he’d be sent in for a loop, but his reaction is entirely your interpretation. :]
adding dating headcannons work too, but i’m mainly aiming for a crush and/or pining type prompt.
he/him pronouns are preferred, but gender neutral pronouns work too.
Thank you so much!!!! ^^”
warning(s) ; none, just fluff!
he’d been hearing whispers of you around the castle for months — it seemed like every one of the scouts had something to say about you and he never went a day without hearing some sort of story or rumour
‘did you hear that the new guy captured two wild witches single handedly?’
‘i heard he killed his own friend when they turned to wild magic’
‘looks like the new guy got another promotion’
‘apparently he’s got a killer stare’
all of these comments slowly helped him paint a distinct picture of you: strict, ruthless, blood thirsty and loyal to the emperor and his coven above all else
the ideal coven member, surely, but definitely not someone he’d like to cross — so he ended up avoiding you as much as possible
until he was assigned to accompany you when you went as representatives of the coven to an event for the local schools — and he quickly realised how wrong his impressions of you were
he was in awe as he watched you entertain and engage the students around you, with plenty of them flocking to you to marvel at your strength and find respite in your kindness
you helped up a younger kid who tripped over and took them aside to heal them and patch up their uniform
you gently corrected another teen’s form and stopped them from giving themselves a migraine
you were firm and professional but so very gentle and kind, a guiding hand and a helpful presence as much as you were a walking advert for your coven
and you extended that sweetness to him, which really startled him as he had never experienced such genuine treatment — at least without any strings attached
when he seemed a bit overwhelmed you took him aside and assured him that you could handle yourself for a while, instructing him to get a cold drink and hang out behind your designated area — where nobody could see him
when someone from another coven called him the golden brat beneath their breath, you stepped forwards and challenged them on it, embarrassing them so much that they apologised and scurried away
you complimented him on his performance and cheered for him loudly when he was doing demonstrations for potential scouts — and he found himself grinning widely beneath his mask at the positive attention
and your compliments weren’t even backhanded — not saying he ‘did good for a kid’ or that his spells ‘were impressive for a magic-less witch’
no
you patted him on the back and told him he did amazing, that he looked spectacular and that the emperor would be proud of him
no conditionals, no ‘but’s just genuine praise
and even after you turned away to answer a try-out’s questions, he found himself unable to stop staring at you — his chest warmer and lighter than ever before
maybe the new guy wasn’t as bad as he thought

This is going to be my thoughts on Emperor Belos, Philip Wittebane, MeltyMcfuckface, or whatever want to call him. Mainly on how he became so fucked in the head.
And why Philip would have killed his brother even if he married a human.
To start with, let’s go with Philip’s story. We all heard it by now so I’m to cover the key points of the story.
Being orphaned at a young age
Moving to Gravesfield
We’re told Caleb and Philip were orphaned when Philip was young. We’re not told though, how this happened but this was during the 1600s, so it probably wasn’t anything pleasant. (They also could have be rich. Caleb and Philip’s clothes looked kind of fancy when they first arrived to Gravesfield compared to the ones they have on later. So money could have been one of the reasons they had to leave their home). Whatever the reason was, it affected Philip gravely.
Then they had to leave their home. Under normal circumstances, kids hate doing that. They have to say goodbye to everything they know, their old home, their friends, everything they grew up with. But the brothers had to leave because they had no parents and they couldn’t stay in their old home. So they had to leave with nothing but each other and the clothes on their back.
Finally they arrived at Gravesfield. They did not receive the warmest welcome from the people of the town. Seeing as the town’s main thing to do was hunt ‘witches’, they most definitely did not trust the two brothers and did nothing for them. Just left them on their own.
When I look back on all the shit that Philip went through, all I think is ‘Wow! This screwed up this lovemap!’
Now you’re wondering what a lovemap is. Well, it’s a mental guide into how you react when giving or receiving love. Like, if someone gave you a hug and you grow up in a house where no one was affectionate with one another, you probably wouldn’t know how to react to it and stand there awkwardly.
The issue with lovemaps is that if something bad happens when the lovemap is forming, which is between the ages of 5 and 8, it will screw the kid for the rest of their life.
And since Philip looks to be around those ages, it’s fair to assume that everything that happened to the brothers: losing their parents, leaving the only home they’ve ever known, and living in a town where no one cared for them, it didn’t leave Philip in the healthiest mind set.
But there was one thing left in Philip’s life, his brother Caleb.
Caleb was always there for Philip, always took care of him. Especially so after their lives were turned upside down.
The issue though is that, after losing so much and being stuck in a new environment, you need something that can bring you comfort, something that makes you feel safe and brings some normality into your life.
For Philip, that was Caleb.
While that would be an alright thing for awhile, it’s always a good thing to try and make friends so ‘the whole latching on to something or someone’ would go away. But since Philip grew up in a full of paranoid nuts, that didn’t happen. So Philip still thought of Caleb that way.
As time went on, it only got worse.
Philip thought of Caleb as most important person to him. Nothing else mattered, no one else mattered like his brother. As long as Philip had Caleb, everything would be alright. If they have each other, nothing was impossible.
To Philip, Caleb was his whole world.
Then Caleb was gone.
He didn’t leave a note or anything behind telling where he went, but Philip knew where his brother was and he knew had to go and save him.
Philip spent months searching for Caleb. He was tired and hungry, but he didn’t stop. He knew if it was the other way around, Caleb would stop at nothing to find him. So Philip had to do the same.
Then he found Caleb.
After searching for so long he finally found him. Philip was so happy, that was about run to his brother, when he spotted her.
The woman that took Caleb away.
What was she still doing with him? She already tricked his brother into coming here. What more could she-
Then he saw her stomach.
It was round.
She was pregnant.
She was pregnant with Caleb’s child.
Why?
Why!
WHY!!!
How could Caleb do this to him!? After everything that has happened, Caleb decided to run off and spend the rest of his life with some. With some WOMAN! Who had not been through the same pain was they went through! So how could Caleb choose her, over staying with his brother!?
As the anger and sadness continued to grow inside him, Philip did something that would forever change him.
Now, after reading all that, you probably noticed that I never once called Evelyn a witch.
That’s because Philip’s hatred towards Evelyn wasn’t because she was a witch.
Sure, a part of Philip wasn’t to thrilled that she was a witch after being stuck in a of witch haters.
But the main reason why Philip hated her was because he didn’t want Caleb to be taken away from him.
Like I said before, after everything that had happened, it mentally screwed Philip up. Since he had Caleb with him however, he was able to stay stable. But it’s been proven time and time again that no one person can do that. Mix that with the fact there was probably no clear visible signs of it or those types of doctors around to help, Philip only got worse. And worse. And worse.
That when Caleb left, Philip almost lost it.
The only reason why he stayed somewhat sane was because he kept telling himself that Caleb hadn’t left him. That, there’s another reason why he was gone. And that, when he finds Caleb, they can figure out what’s going on, fix it, and they can go back to living their lives together.
But when he discovered the reason Caleb was to start a new life without him, all hell broke loose.
With all that being said, it wouldn’t matter who Caleb fell for, witch or human alike, Philip was going to end his brother’s life either way.
Because the thing Philip feared more than anything, was thought of his brother leaving him.
As for the reason why his hatred of witches grew to the point of wanting to destroy every single one of them.
Well, I’ll put it like this,
He had just killed his brother. His brother. His last remaining family. The person who was always there for him, and he KILLED HIM! He couldn’t believe it! He had took his own brother’s life with his own hands!
The pain and guilt felt was too much for him, HE COULDN’T TAKE IT! IT HURT TOO MUCH!
So, he started to blame others for it.
He first blamed the witch that brought his brother here. If she hadn’t gotten in the way, he and his brother would still be living their lives back at home.
Then started to blame all witches internally. If they hadn’t existed in the first place, none of this would be happening.
He even started to blame his own brother. If he hadn’t left him for that witch, he would still be alive! But instead, he chose this…this…
THIS PLACE!
It was this place’s fault!
This cursed realm! If it hadn’t existed in the first place, that witch wouldn’t have existed either. Then she wouldn’t have shown this place to his brother and he wouldn’t have been tempted into coming to this realm.
His brother was too weak willed. He probably couldn’t resist not coming here after that witch filled his head with nothing but lies about how wonderful this place was. And he was too blinded by his so called ‘love’ for the witch to see through them.
His brother was too far gone, this might had been the only way to save him.
Yes. Yes, he had saved his brother.
Now he must make sure no one else would have to go through the same pain he did. By making sure this realm is no more.
And as God as his witness, Belos will not fail.
Anyway this just my 2 cents, do what you will with it.

Our Day of Unity
(Philip Wittebane x Reader)
TW: Hanging, Corpses
A/N: This started off as a scene for a potential Philip fanfic I might write in the future, however I’m really proud of this so I figure it uploaded as a oneshot for we simps to enjoy. This takes place before Philip & Wittebro go to The Demon Realm
—()—
“One day we’re going to get married.”
Y/N turned to him, a light pink dusting spread across their face.
“What makes you say that?”
Philip grinned, “We’re best friends. I don’t ever want to be without you.”
Y/N blinked a few times, parting their lips, they quickly regained their composure, and stepping forward they brushed against Philip’s shoulder.
“What if I’m betrothed to another man?”
This comment was surprising, Philip stood motionless for a moment, took a breath, walking forward to his friend, “I’d show your parents all I can offer to you. My brain could supply more than the little money I currently have, my wits to build us a good married life, and my heart scorching for you… My dear, dear friend.”
Y/N hummed a faint tune, “And what if a prince sweeps me off my feet and takes me as his spouse?”
They turned to continue forward, eager to hear Philip’s response, but they were stopped, Philip had grasped their hand. “I’d wait for you. Maybe a Prince could give you wealth but his heart will never be for only you.”
The two stood a stare, inching closer and closer, eyelids fluttering, and then… the sun shifted, a shadow cast above the two, snapping the kids out of the daze. They opened their eyes glimpsing at the shadow and turned towards it.
Nine corpses. Each one hung for the crime of witchcraft. The two stared at the bodies, in complete silence they squeezed one another’s hands.
Eventually, the silence was broken by Y/N, their voice quivered “What if a witch kidnaps me?”
Philip twitched, he turned his head to look at them, however, they continued to stare at the floating remains.
“I..I…” He thought about it, “I wouldn’t rest until I’ve found you again.”
Philip’s eyes met Y/N’s, “And I’d hunt down your captor, I’ll save you from the sinful, I’ll protect you. No matter what… in fact... I’ll get rid of all of the evil plaguing humanity.”
Y/N smiled, Philip clasped onto their hand and bent down. “So, my dear, dear Y/N, on that day, the day I end all evil, will you marry me?”
They tilted their head, and they laughed. Philip frowned, he didn’t think this was amusing.
“Sorry-” They chuckled, “Sure Philip, on that day I’ll marry you.”
Philip beamed, he placed a gentle kiss on their knuckles.
The nine corpses observed, they blew ever so slightly in the wind.
Philip rose and offered his arm to his intended which they giddily took.
Exchanging sweet giggles, the couple walked beneath those nine corpses, not a care in the world.

so as per usual i saw people talking about a concept, pulled a face, then started thinking, “okay, but could that actually work?”, so here’s my personal take on how Hunter Killing Belos could actually work
so. imagine this. somehow, Hunter finds out about the draining spell/genocide plans on his own. it’s pre-Hollow Mind, that never ends up happening, so Belos doesn’t know he knows, and therefore his own life is not in immediate danger and he doesn’t have to run away.
instead, he’s just going about his regular daily life in the castle. attending to his duties as Golden Guard. assisting the Emperor, who he now knows is planning to murder the entire population of the Isles in at most a couple of months, and whose regime Hunter himself has personally helped prop up and legitimize.
now the thing about Hunter is that he thought he was doing something good. like everyone else, he sincerely believed the propaganda - he believed that Belos spoke to the Titan and carried out the Titan’s will, that he himself had some kind of divinely appointed grand destiny that he was working towards fulfilling, that the Isles were going to be ushered into paradise on the Day of Unity, that everything Belos did was for the good of the people.
he’s a deeply moral person with a strong sense of justice, imo, whose idea of what morality or justice or goodness is has been intensely warped by being raised by Emperor “Philip ‘lying serial killer’ Wittebane” Belos and handfed a steady diet of propaganda and manipulation for his entire life.
so. he has a choice. he can either let Belos hurt people, let Belos literally kill everyone on the Isles... or he can do something about it.
as far as he knows, he’s the only person who knows. as far as he knows, he’s the only person who can do anything about it.
on the one hand, there’s Belos. his uncle, the man who raised him, his only family, a man who he absolutely adores, a man he worships, a man who he has dedicated his entire life to serving. on the other hand, there’s literally every single living person in the entire Isles.
that’s not an easy choice for Hunter, not at all, but it’s a very simple one. he can’t let his uncle go through with it. but what’s he supposed to do? he can’t talk Belos out of it. there’s no act of sabotage he could commit that would sufficiently derail the Day of Unity. he’s just one person, albeit a very highly-ranked one.
no, the only real advantage he has is that he has unparalleled intimate access to the Emperor. to his uncle.
so... he uses that. he makes a plan. (he stops sleeping, he stops eating, he throws himself into his work, he does his best to keep up appearances, his stomach is eating itself and he feels so sick all of the time.) he gets Belos alone. it’s harder to do now than when he was younger, but he still finds himself alone with Belos in his workshop, in his personal chambers, away from anyone else, plenty often.
and he assassinates the Emperor.
he hopes to die in the attempt. failing that, he’s sure that he’ll be executed afterwards, and he’ll happily stand on the stage to be petrified without ever breathing a word of what he found out. no one else needs to know what Belos was planning. let them revile him, let his memory be dragged through the mud, let him be known forever as a traitor who took paradise away from them. that’s fine.
he doesn’t die, though! and, worse - he’s not the only person who knew. there were rebels at the highest levels who were trying to work to stop Belos themselves, and he got the jump on them and now they’re scrambling to get on top of this situation.
and now i invite you to consider... Raine Whispers, who has a ruthlessly practical streak a mile wide, who was absolutely willing to die and kill for the sake of toppling this dictator even before they knew he was planning genocide. who, as a performer, understands the value of propaganda.
(and Darius, who, as a theatrical bitch and someone who did an even better job of flying under the radar than Raine, also understands the value of putting on a good show. and cares about Hunter, too, although he’s never felt like it was safe enough to admit that to anyone, least of all Hunter.)
consider the two of them looking at the problem in front of them: they have a beheaded imperium staggering around about to collapse, a society full of witches and demons who have no idea what Hunter just did for them, and one extremely guilty suicidal teenage boy who just saved everyone’s lives and is ready to go to his grave without ever saying so because it meant betraying and murdering the man who raised him.
and consider them, practical, crafty, bastardous, going: “i think i know how to kill both of these birds with one stone here.”
and leaping to craft and push this whole narrative where the noble Golden Guard was ready and willing to sacrifice his own life to save the people of the Isles after learning of the Emperor’s true goals, so who better to take the Emperor’s place? with, of course, the support and advice of the ruling council of the coven heads, who truly knew nothing of what Belos intended.
(none of them like or respect Hunter. none of them trust or particularly like Raine, either. they probably largely don’t like Darius, but his loyalty and dedication is unimpeachable. he’ll talk them around. they all want power, right? well here it is - the boy can’t rule, he’s a trained dog stuffed into royal vestments, he’s a kid, he’ll need guidance, do you see what he’s saying?)
they save Hunter by making him a figurehead. now everyone knows the truth - although how long it’s going to take for everyone to accept that truth is another matter entirely - now the covens have a banner to rally under, now there’s a sense of continuity and society has been shaken without collapsing entirely, so Raine and Darius and Eberwolf can go on making changes and bringing about the government they want to have without completely tearing it down and starting all over again.
(Raine is worried about him. this is a lot for a kid to deal with, and he’s obviously troubled. but it’s the best thing for the greatest number of people, and it’s only until they can hammer out something better.)
(Darius is so proud of him - a secret palisman and sneaking out to make friends is one thing, but this? if he’d known Hunter had this kind of rebellion in him, he might’ve brought the kid into his confidence a lot earlier. he wishes they’d been able to coordinate, because sweet Titan is this a grade-A clusterfuck of a mess, but he can’t bring himself to regret not telling the Emperor’s loyal right-hand boy man about the treason he was planning.)
(and Hunter? well. Hunter has A Job To Do, so he can’t throw himself into the spike moat, no matter how miserable he is.)
