Hazy mid-summer day on the Sods, Part 2.

The planet's fantastic life energy reaches its peak in mid to late summer as the sun's precious light shrinks by the day and every living thing senses its time is running out. On the Plains of Dolly Sods, where the growing season is already compressed by the high elevation, plants compete for the swirling, buzzing masses of insects with their gaudy blooms and produce successive waves of berries to seed new generations. The drone of the insects carrying out their instinctive missions of renewal is constantly in your head as they dive and dart and skirt around you. You barely register as a distraction against the great drama playing out here - one whose stakes are survival, regeneration, salvation. I feel so privileged to have connected with this life force in the most intimate way, even for the few short years of my mayfly existence. I will die a happy man for having immersed myself in its lovely, purposeful chaos and becoming part of something much greater than myself.

Poisonous Garden Plants to Avoid

1. Deadly Nightshade (Atropa belladonna)

The deadly nightshade is a perennial plant with long, thin branches. Its leaves are oval-shaped with smooth edges and pointed ends. They grow on the plant’s thin branches in an alternate pattern and are poisonous. The most distinctive feature of this plant species is the purple flowers with reflexed petals and a yellow cone at the center, which blooms from late May through August.

Hardiness Zone – 5 through 9 Associated Danger – All parts of this plant are toxic, but the sweet, purplish-black berries that are attractive to children pose the most significant danger. Symptoms of poisoning include rapid heartbeat, dilated pupils, delirium, vomiting, hallucinations, and potential death from acute respiratory failure.

2. Oleander (Nerium oleander)

Often called rosebay, this Mediterranean native is characterized by its tall shrubby habit and its thick lance-shaped opposite leaves. The flowers are borne in terminal clusters and may appear in a rose color, rarely white or yellow.

Hardiness Zone – 8 through 10 Associated Danger – All parts of Nerium oleander (leaves, flowers, stems, twigs, and roots) are toxic. Oleander poisoning can adversely affect the heart, nervous system, stomach and intestines, eyes, and skin.

Note: Cut stems release a sticky latex that can severely irritate the skin. Wear gloves when you handle clippings or remove the plant altogether.

3. Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum)

This is a plant with leaves containing high levels of the addictive chemical nicotine. After harvesting, tobacco leaves are cured, aged, and processed in multiple ways. The resulting products can be smoked (in cigarettes, cigars, and pipes), applied to the gums (as dipping or chewing tobacco), or inhaled (as snuff).

Hardiness Zone – 2 through 10 Associated Danger – Those who plant, cultivate, or harvest tobacco are at high risk of suffering from nicotine poisoning, known as “Green Tobacco Sickness.” This illness causes severe nausea and vomiting that can lead to hospitalization.

4. Rosary Pea (Abrus precatorius)

Also known as coral bean, crab’s eye, jequirity bean, and prayer bead, Rosary Pea is an ornamental, twining, woody vine reaching heights of 10 to 20 feet when supported by other plants or trees. This plant’s leaves are alternate, compound, and feather-like, with small oblong leaflets. Its flowers are numerous and appear in the leaf axils along the stems.

Hardiness Zone – 9 through 11 Associated Danger – Abrus precatorius is highly toxic and can be fatal if ingested. In its native range, the plant’s roots are used to induce abortion and relieve abdominal discomfort. One of the most deadly plant toxins, abrin, is produced by this species.

5. Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)

Castor bean is a fast-growing perennial large shrub or small tree. This is an evergreen herbaceous or semi-woody species. This robust, tender plant can grow to 40 feet tall, developing woody stems over time in frost-free climates.

Hardiness Zone – 9 through 11 Associated Danger – Ricin is a poison found naturally in castor beans. If castor beans are chewed and swallowed, the released ricin can cause injury. Potentially lethal doses reported for children and adults are three beans and four to eight beans, respectively.

6. Water Hemlock (Cicuta maculata)

Water hemlock has small, white flowers that grow in umbrella-like clusters. Side veins of the leaves lead to notches, not to tips at the outer margin. Poison-hemlock stems have reddish or purple spots and highly-visible streaks.

Hardiness Zone – This species is common throughout the north temperate zone. Associated Danger – Water hemlock is the most violently toxic plant in North America. Only a small amount of the plant’s toxic substance is required to produce poisoning in wildlife, livestock, or humans. The toxin cicutoxin, acting directly on the central nervous system, is a violent convulsant.

7. White Snakeroot (Ageratina altissima)

Growing 1 to 3 feet in height, white snakeroot is an upright, many-branched perennial with smooth (sometimes hairy) stems and fibrous roots.

Hardiness Zone – 3 through 8 Associated Danger – The leaves and stems of white snakeroot contain tremetol, which is toxic to both animals and humans. Tremetol is an accumulative toxin that takes time to build to toxic levels. The toxin directly affects the heart and causes severe muscular degeneration, loss of coordination, tremors, and an irregular heart rate.

Native Plant of the Day - Ageratina altissima aka White Snakeroot

Most people think I'm foolish for allowing this perennial weed to grow in my family yard however it is deer resistant and I rather like incorporating woodland seeds from the adjacent forest floor plants into our shade gardens. Fair warning this plant is is toxic and can pass toxins onto people if consumed by cattle but there is evidence of people using poultice and teas from the root stock for various ailments (not that I would risk that or recommend that without further research). The plant performs best in partial sun and produces beautiful white blooms throughout September and early October. This photo was taken in northern NJ.

Well that pause lasted longer than I intended. October was a busy month. Onward we go with some more Boyd Crevice pics, which should have come before the previous batch but they got shunted into a different folder by mistake and I missed them on the first pass. Had more than I thought I did that were taken with my DSLR before the battery died.

Photo is blurry as fuck so I'm not 100% on the ID, but I'm pretty sure this is Ageratina altissima, white snakeroot (careful, it's poisonous).

‘’What are the ten most deadliest plants?’’ you read on your flashcard, sitting on your bed.

Before you, Ajax was sitting criss-crossed and in deep thinking. ‘’Deadly nightshade, aconite — also known as wolf’s bane —, thornapples, angel’s trumpets, white snakeroot…and I don't know the rest.’’

You sighed, telling him the missing answers and flipping to the next flashcard. ‘’We studied these plants all month, how can you miss half of them?’’

‘’I suck at Botany. I’m sorry.’’ He fell against your pillows and plushies, having enough of studying. ‘’Do you know how beautiful you are? It’s truly distracting.’’ He rubbed his hands over your legs, but you didn’t give him the attention he wanted.

You were flattered by his compliments, but flirting and sweet talking won’t make you drop the studying session.

‘’Can we just kiss instead? We have the dorm to ourselves.’’

Shaking your head, you didn’t lift your eyes from the flashcard. ‘’No. We have a quiz on phytotoxicology tomorrow morning. We have to study,’’ you said, emphasizing on ‘study’.

Ajax groaned, still laying against your pillows. He understood the need to study, but kissing was so much better. ‘’My lips are feeling lonely.’’

You glanced at his puppy eyes and the oh-so-cute pout on his lips. You would rather make out than study, but you pushed back the study session so much that you were running low on time and could not move it to another day.

‘’Are they?’’ You cooed and slowly leaned down.

Ajax nodded, thinking you had fallen for his shit when he was the fool. ‘’Yeah, they’re missing yours.’’

Instead of kissing him like you made him believe you would, you grabbed the pen from his side of the bed, leaving Ajax even more frustrated when he realized you were not going to kiss him.

‘’Next question. The chapter on Aconite is very long and Ms. Thornhill won't fail to quiz us on it.’’

You asked each other flashcards questions back and forth, but after a few you were starting to get bored too.

You had about ten flashcards to go through and more reading in the textbooks, so if you wanted to get through everything, you and Ajax were going to need some motivation.

‘’Let’s make a deal. If we get 90% of the questions right before the clock hit 8pm, we’ll make out until my roommate returns. Deal?’’

Ajax evaluated your deal for a moment. ‘’Just making out?’’

You nodded. Anything that involved taking clothes off would be too risky and Ajax was a shy boy in front of people he wasn’t close with. If you were to get caught doing anything sexual by your roommate, he would never be able to look at her again.

‘’Can petting be involved? Can I put my hands under your shirt?’’

You nodded for both. You’ll probably hate yourself later because you won’t be able to get yourself off after Ajax leaves, but the thought of Ajax’s hands on your tits sounded really really nice.

‘’And, in case you need some more material to make your decision… Just so you know, I’m not wearing a bra.’’

In this sunny, dry sunken garden the Eryngium yuccifolium (button eryngo, button snakeroot, rattlesnake-master) was producing branched stems of small, white flower-heads. The base of this evergreen perennial forms a clump of bluish-green, strap-shaped leaves.
