"Are you Ulgrim, the god of Mountains?" Even if you did not perform a great hunt yet, could the god have noticed your fight with the Underfolk? Was this your chance to prove yourself? To be of help to your mother? No longer be a mere burden?

You only further prove my point as to why I do not lower myself to the likes of you. Insulting me, is not doing you any favours.

If its not the god of mountains you are speaking to, then who is it?

You see the little beetle turn towards the shining light in your hand, it wiggles its legs and tentacles wildly and exasperated now, as if chastising this… god?

Well, fine. That will be the last favour I will do for you, Bramble. Will you waste it for a mere human?

The beetle gives a small assertive nod.

Then let me introduce myself to you, human. It spat the last word and you doubt this will be a pleasant conversation, I am the god of Nothing, I am everywhere and nowhere, I am everything and I am nothing. Is that clear for you now?

If you are nothing, can you be invisible to other humans as well?"

The light flickers, a scoff. I just told you that I showed myself for your pity's sake alone. You wouldn't have even known of my presence otherwise.

"And the Underfolk? Can you hide from them too?" You sat up, now eager to question this being in front of you.

It did not answer right away, instead it floated to the side, a little further away from you.

You felt the beetle tickle in your hand as it spoke to his god.

I am not-! The god snapped at Bramble, before taking a moment to calm down, You have a lot of questions, human. I promised Bramble to help you, but not to answer all your foolish thoughts.

Well, at least you know they could hide you from the humans hunting you and when you are bound to a god in any form, you could deal with the Underfolk yourself too. You could help your mother, you could have her stay.

"Then be my god! Let me perform the ritual and choose you."

The light stood still, no words were echoing through the forest, no rustling of the leaves ahead - no wind. You almost feared it would leave, so you lift the little beetle still in your hand and spoke to them:

"Bramble, tell them if they want to help me, they need to accept me in the ritual. I am of age, all I need is for them to say yes too."

The beetle tippled along your hand, a moment of hesitation as well, before they turned towards the glowing light standing still in front of you. At least you can read the beetle's reaction.

It spoke, you couldn't understand it, then the light prickled as an answer, but you did not hear it speak. Bramble spoke again, inching closer to the edge of your outstretched hand.

Then the light poofed and disappeared. You felt your heart sink, seeing your only chance gone.

"Where did they go? Did they agree?" You frantically look around, not yet giving up hope. It doesn't have to mean anything.

You watch Bramble stomp his little feet, he too seems displeased with his god, but then he pushes himself upwards and with a loud buzzing noise, sours into the air.

Fearing he is going to leave you too, you instantly spring to your feet. As you jog after the green shimmering beetle, you wonder where your mother was. What will she think when she returns and finds your shelter shattered? You shouldn't roam too far, or she might not find you, but you can't let this chance pass by either.

Making up your mind, you steer your eyes upwards, following the shimmer of Bramble, determined to not let him out of your sight. You will have this god as yours and do as any young boy your age should do - fulfill the ritual. [ ~ 893 words ]

The photos are of: Red Squirrel at Newborough Forest, Anglesey, Stonechat at RSPB Valley Wetlands in Anglesey, evening view at Cemaes on Anglesey, Lulworth Skipper at Durlston in Dorset, evening view at Lakeside Country Park, Hampshire and pyramidal orchids at Durlston.

I often say things about June being the or a key month of the year as since I left education we’ve had a wildlife holiday in all but two Junes (one of them was 2020 when we had to postpone a holiday until 2021 due to the pandemic and still had a week off of day trips) which often contains some of our best experiences of a year and everything wildlife wise at home is packed and in terms of insects and flowers especially going at quite a pace into summer. This June was no exception, and was a phenomenal month. Starting with birds where I had a fantastic birdwatching month, with a few more species seen for the first time this year putting my year list into an unbelievable position with Sunday’s Pig Bush Spotted Flycatcher sighting taking my year list to 207 to make it my highest ever. There were some incredible species seen this month, from Arctic Tern, Manx Shearwater, Chough, Black Guillemot and Little Ringed Plover key birds of the amazing holiday on Anglesey and wider north Wales, to Peregrine at Winchester Cathedral and Durlston and Great Crested Grebes at Lakeside excitedly seeing chicks for both this month. Jay, Common Guillemot, Razorbill and Puffin and Marsh and Hen Harrier were other key birds this month. It was a brilliant month of mammals, headlined by the exquisite experiences seeing the Red Squirrel to ensure I’ve seen them in England, Scotland and Wales this year and also Grey Seals amazingly on a boat trip around Puffin Island on Anglesey.

It was a blissful month of butterflies as we sailed into summer, I was amazed to see species such as Meadow Brown and Large Skipper firstly at Lakeside, Silver-studded Blue, Common Grayling, Dark Green Fritillary and Ringlet firstly in the amazing set we saw in North Wales, Small Skipper, Essex Skipper, the Lulworth Skippers, Gatekeeper, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary with Small Copper and lots of Red Admiral other highlights. I am in a strong place in my butterfly year compared to my other years. Silver Y, enigmatic Hummingbird hawk-moths, the emergence of both Five-spot Burnet and Six-spot Burnet into my year and new ones for me like Brown Silver-line, Rosy Wave, Large Yellow Underwing and Garden Grass Veneer as well as Straw Dot seen were key species of a strong moth month.

It was a dazzling month of dragonflies and damselflies with so many seen. Golden-ringed Dragonfly, Four-spotted Chaser, Emperor, Southern Hawker, Black-tailed Skimmer and Broad-bodied Chaser were strong dragonflies to observe, with Azure Damselfly which I’m having a great year for, Beautiful Demoiselle, Blue-tailed Damselfly and Common Blue Damselfly fascinating and stunning damsels to enjoy. It was a great month for other insects with Swollen-thighed beetle dominating the month with loads seen probably more than I have before this year. Great Green Bush-cricket, Rose Chafer beetle, Chrysomela populi beetle and Black-spotted Longhorn beetle were other creatures I was so fascinated and thrilled to see and for many learn.

June was a fabulous month of flowers too of course as I was captivated by orchids seeing the pyramidals, bee orchids a flower I love so much, and marsh orchids including early marsh orchid. Marsh helleborine, self-heal, argimony, English stonecrop, sheep’s-bit, marsh cinquefoil, yellow-horned poppy, meadow crane’s-bill, bird’s-foot trefoil, red campion, foxgloves, yellow rattle, chamomile, pineappleweed, yellow iris, thrift, knapweed, thistle, mallow and oxeye daisy were other key flowers seen with the flowers seen at Lakeside regularly and big times in the year for flowers in Anglesey and Durlston sticking in the mind. Finally it was a great month for just enjoying being outdoors and seeing the outdoors in so much bright sunshine, I took in many breathtaking views at many wonderful places enjoying summery sunsets, sun going down scenes and the moon. Time, and Time Again

Ze'mer has seen the fall of a kingdom, plucked of its petals and stem thrown to the winds. Now she lives in a kingdom, rooted down by the hand of the queen, and she feels she is safe.

No one expects the tree to uproot herself, after all.

The first time it happened, Ze’mer had been young. She’d only just had her first molt, and her mother was still teaching her how to arrange the flowers they kept in the shop.

On the first day, they worked with roses. Thorns that pricked her little fingers and made her mother carefully position her small, clumsy hands to avoid them. She grinned up at the man who’d ordered them, who said he wanted to gift them to his wife. He’d pat her head and thanked her for the batch.

Two days later, he went missing.

Four days after that, his body was found, looking as though it had been sucked of all it’s life.

On the second day, Ze’mer avoided roses. She asked her mother what flowers meant good luck and plucked them from the gardens herself. Peonies, orchids, lilies. She placed them carefully in a bouquet and whispered her love to a rose chafer behind the bread crumb bakery. They whispered to meet again in three days.

In three days, she didn’t show up.

In three more she was found dead, looking as though she’d been drained of her life. (Privately, Ze’mer thought she, the one left alive, might have been drained of all the love she’d held.)

On the third day, Ze’mer stayed away from roses, peonies, orchids, and lilies. Her mother told her to get chrysanthemums from the field, and she did, holding them to her chest on the way home. She handed one to the boy who wanted a pet and one to the bug that had just gotten better, and one to the centipede in the cave not too far off.

The boy disappeared the next day, the bug following two days after.

In four days they, two strangers, were found together, shriveled up and drained. (Ze’mer later passed by the cave and was horrified to find that the centipede was also dead. She gathered it’s belongings and arranged the few that she knew were precious to them around it’s body. The rest she brought home to mourn, alone.)

Again, with daisies, again, with carnations, again with sunflowers, and again, and again and again.

She took a break for a week after the twenty-sixth death. During that week, there was news of eight more deaths, and despite her growing fear, she let herself feel relief from the guilt of it possibly being her that was killing them all.

She went back to work just in time to greet the queen at her doorstep. This was a surprise, as the queen almost never left her place in the palace. The root ducked her head low to fit under the doorway and Ze’mer shook her head.

“My queen, please, I can meet you out there!” Ze’mer stepped out and looked up, up at the tree, meeting her eyes. (Years later, her mental picture of the queen would be fuzzy, dulled by blocking out the trauma of so many deaths in the time surrounding the meeting. Now though,) The queen was a blinding white, bright and nearly glowing, with a crown of branches sprouting from her head. She wore a matching white kimono, gold weaving stitched into the sleeves. Roots uplifted the soil beneath her, and Ze’mer avoided them politely.

The queen bowed her head. “I’d heard that you are rather good at flower arrangements. Though I’m not quite looking for an arrangement, I wonder if you’re willing to pick a certain type of flower for me?” She shifted, the gold on her sleeves glinting in the light.

Ze’mer was nodded once, sharply. “Of course, my lady! What do you need?”

The root smiled. “Wisteria.”

Ze’mer furrowed her brows. Wisteria were an invasive species, and as such, they’d been cut out of the garden and the fields surrounding the town. She’d have to search far to find any. She refused to voice this though, instead asking, “And how large of an order are you looking for?”

“As large as you can make it,” The lady said, easily, as if she wasn’t asking Ze’mer to leave for a week and a half in hopes of finding what she wanted. The smaller bug agreed anyway. “Wonderful!” The queen exclaimed. “I’ll come back for them in a month, no rush!”

Ze’mer was quiet for a moment, then slipped back into the shop to pack. It would be a while more before she was open for customers.

Three weeks passed before she’d gathered enough to go back home, and by then, she’d found that she was too late for something. Walking into town was as it always was, though quieter. Darker.

Something was wrong.

It became evident when she turned the street and was met with the sight for four bodies, shriveled like all the others. She dropped the flowers as she ran down the street to the flowershop, looking up at it’s cracked walls, holes of varying sizes littering the building. Ze’mer rushed in, scanning the room for any sign of her mother, finding nothing but wreckage. A single bouquet of delicate flowers was placed on the ground, undisturbed.

Ze’mer picked it up carefully, and turned to the nail that lay under the rubble. It had been her mother’s and now that she was - she clutched the bouquet tight - dead, it would be hers.

As it was meant to be.

She picked up the nail and walked away, away from the town where she grew, away from the bodies of people she’d known, away from the life she’d had.

The second time it happened was years later, memories repressed, and a new kingdom. Somehow, despite all of this, Ze’mer was still left feeling like the same small bug she’d been the before. Her queen, the white lady, had asked to see her, and to tell no one. She’d obliged, as one was to do when their queen asked them of something.

“My lady?” She’d asked, bowing to her queen. “What do you need?”

The queen smiled. “Your service, my knight.”

Ze’mer paused, brows furrowed. She opened her mouth to voice her confusion, but roots shot from the ground to gather her up. They squeezed and the knight choked, gasping for air.

“You are my husband’s knight. But I think I’d prefer you to bow to me alone.” She brought Ze’mer close, touching a branch to the back of her head. “You are mine, knight, and you will stay that way.”

Something latched onto the bug’s skull and dug in, sending a shooting pain through her body. She coughed up what would have been a scream, had she been able to.

Ze’mer looked up at the root, eyes catching on the flowers draped over her branches.

Ah. Wisteria.

The queen had asked for wisteria.

Ze’mer thought of the home she’d had, and corpses she’d left and hoped that her love would be safe. That Hallownest would be safe. That she would not loose another home.

A delicate flower fell to the floor and ripped to pieces.

Nematodes are the organic grower’s biological weapon. They kill pests such as slugs, vine weevil and ants – without using harmful toxic chemicals.

What are they?

Nematodes are microscopic creatures, that act as parasites on other insects. They release bacteria into the host’s body to kill them. The nematode then eats the host. For the organic grower, this is a biological – not chemical – pest control. Unlike a chemical spray, which may drift off target, nematodes are specific to the host pest, so that other wildlife is not affected.

You can buy nematodes online. However, they aren’t necessarily cheap and you do need to follow the very precise instructions on how to use them.

How to use nematodes It is important to choose the correct nematode for the right type of pest. And to use them in the right conditions.

The pests or their larvae need to be active.

Nematodes should be applied when light levels are low. They are light sensitive, so apply them in the very early morning or at dusk.
