You're Losing Me
I think Joe was exactly what Taylor needed in 2016. He was high above the all scene and she needed someone who's the furthest thing from the spotlight and the scrutiny and the drama, but she moved on, she changed and grew up and he didn't ("I knew you tried to change the ending, Peter losing Wendy"). It's great that he "didn't read into her melancholia" but he lacked empathy and understanding, and she was struggling and needed him to see her.
"Remember lookin' at this room, we loved it 'cause of the light" hearing this line after knowing they looked to buy a house together. I think she often looks back at it and sees it as symbolic. They were looking to build their relaionship and now all that's left of it is a dark, abaonded room.
I noticed you can hear her hearbeat during the bridge before she sings "I can't find a pulse" sickness is a theme in the song and it's almost like a patient telling the doctor they're dying and begging them to do something and the doctor just...doesn't. For such a long time he was her doctor, he was her lifeline, he brought her back to life and now her pain is an imposition to him. She was dying and he couldn't even tell and she was begging him to do something, say something, risk something, choose something. Choose her!
It's weird saying they "predicted their breakup" with exile, but I really think they were writing about their struggles in some way. Maybe they talked about it or maybe they both knew it was happening but chose to keep quiet. He missed all her signs and was surprised and distraught that she packed her bags and immediately moved to someone who's obsessed with her.
I listened to the song and immediately put hoax on repeat and I could write a thousand essays about hoax and renegade and cardigan and exile and now You're Losing Me. I also think with Midnights she was looking back at her old relationships in an attempt to fix that one. "How long could we be a sad song 'til we're too far gone to bring back to life?"
I don't want to villanlize Joe. Taylor baiscally said he struggled with his mental health but...she was trying so hard to be a fire to keep him warm, to make herself a place when there was nowhere to stay. She gave him her best, she gave him so much empathy and he didn't return it. "I tried to be the bravest soldier, fighting in your only army" after The Great War is devastating. She put so much effort to work on her trust issues and communicate to save them but then she realised she was the only one fighting.
I don't want to villanize him, but "don't you ignore me. I'm the best thing at this party" sure does make me very mad.
"I wouldn't marry me either, a pathological people pleaser" was a punch to the gut. I want to hug her so bad. I don't want this to be used as a "gotcha" moment but I wonder if she looks at Lavender Haze a little different and if maybe she tried to convince herself she was unbothered because he wasn't willing to commit. It does seem like he has an indecisive nature, whereas she knows what she wants. Maybe she wanted people to stop talking about them marrying because it was a soft spot. You really should mind your business because you never know what someone else is going through.
She's such a mirrorball, a mastermind. All she wants is to be wanted and loved and she would do anything for the people she loves. She would've done anything for him.

To Zane Lowe (at 36mins) Taylor talked about Coney Island being about male regret and place everyone wanted to be but now with the lights are off. In this Lyric video Taylor referenced Harry's winding wheels, a metaphor for soulmates. It is co-written with William Bowery, Joe has no credit.
Winding Wheel
The Winding Wheel is a Ryan Adams’ song. (Ryan made a rock cover album of 1989). There is a post about it here. Ryan described it as a metaphor for an “ultimate soulmate”.
13 December 2013, Harry posted 'better still be my winding wheel' on Taylor's birthday. Say don't go was written 2 weeks later.

This is very long, this song hits so many classic Haylor themes that its dense. When it is all written out like this it boggles my mind people would think it is about another muse or several.
Taylor also said on radio about Coney Island:
"Aaron Dessner sent me this track that he created with his brother Bryce, and I wrote the lyrics and the melody with William Bowery. I was coming from a place of somebody who’s been in a relationship for decades and wakes up one day & realizes that they have taken their partner for granted. It speaks to people who are trying to communicate - but they’re two ships passing in the night. They’re trying to love each other but their signals are somehow missing each other.”
She also said ships in the nights about Exile in that interview and in the lyrics of Willow.
Live performances
Coney Island has been played live once, 28 April 2023 in Atlanta. This is one day before the High Infidelity anniversary of April 29. The other song was The Other Side of the Door which has similar theme of wanting a lover back and regret for ruining a relationship.

The opening verse does not pull punches, it ends with 'if I can't relate to who then who am I related to?' Taylor and Harry have a lot of shared history, similar careers and while no one is as big as Taylor Harry is in a small group who can relate. They have respectively sung about being each others soulmate. To loose that is devastating.
Breaking her soul looking is similar to:

And if this is the long haul

This again refers to this concept that even apart they are each others person, so to feel they aren’t connecting is a loss
Closing her fist around something Delicate is a reference to the song, which is also about Harry, more on why here. Shattering him is a reference to Falling, to be so lonely. and possibly renegade. Shattered pieces are also in mirrorball.

I love this line, they were the one place to be, the two biggest pop stars in love. I also find a parallel in this line and August, "And say, "Meet me behind the mall" August being the other person, not Harry and Taylor, they meet behind the mall which Harry and Taylor are.
Gift-wrapped suburban dreams refers to Suburban Legends, where Harry and Taylor are the idols of suburbia. "We were born to be suburban legends [...] We were born to be national treasures/ When you told me we'd get back together"
Similar to the centerfold line, not winning you an arcade ring is saying sorry for not getting back together as they had thought. Falling is Harry's perspective on this belief that Taylor would stay with someone else. This time I will choose SOTB as my sequel track. ;)

This may have been in 2015, they had been seen together in late 2014, up to 2 weeks before Harry's birthday. Then Taylor was in Nashville on his birthday and she met CH 3 weeks later.
Hallways are also in 10 songs, generally meeting in them, but here they break up. Taylor also mentioned the birthday line to Zane Lowe as the album came out just before her birthday.

To me, I forgot to say your name at the podium is a reference to Taylors 2013 VMA speech where she said "I'd like to say the person who inspired this song, you know exactly who you are, and now I have one of these!" Harry and Taylor were both musicians, the inspired each other and as evidenced by still writing to each other 10 years later this speech diminished that.
Harry’s unreleased Talk and includes “You forgot my name / Sick and tired of me, I can feel the heat” which, no one forgets his name so I take it as referring to the podium.

I'm gonna share with you all my reactions when I first listened to midnights. I was sharing all in real time in my 🐦 account, but I just have my friends, and unfortunately they're not swifities 🫠 BUT they're listening to taylor a LOT because of me, they all know my favorite songs lmao. I hope you all have a great day🤎
💙✨ MIDNIGHTS REVIEW 💙✨
Track 1- Lavender Haze
From the track name, clearly there is a parallel between this track with our beloved Track 6 from Lover, "I Think He Knows". The bridge is very sensual, It's really nice and smooth to be heard and answers some things that the media/fans questions her. I liked.
Track 2- Maroon
Sounds a LOT like KOMH 🖤/ Clean 💙. She said that there's no vault tracks from the other eras, but I was willing that this track was written around those 🥲 (especially bc she talks about pouring wine, reference to "Dress" and about dancing barefoot in NYC, can be ref of Cornelia Street and DWOHT) OMG F*CK the person brought CARNATIONS thinking they were roses 🥲 I'm sure It's a metaphor for being dead,bc carnations are consider funeral flowers.
Track 3- Anti-Hero
It parallels several verses of "The Archer", I heard about 3 times bc I'm in SHOCK with this song. It hurts. And also reminds me a little of "right where you left me" and "this is me trying". She knew SO MUCH leaving this song as a single. Extremely identifiable FVCK 🫥 When she's intensifying the "s" in "agrees", sounds like the hiss of a 🐍, hello reputation...
AND I LOVE the music video, SO MUCH EASTER EGGS 😰😰 blondie you're AMAZING. When she points "it's me, hi, i'm the problem it's me at tea time everybody agrees" and it parallels Alice in Wonderland, it’s genius. Especially because Alice comes in time for tea to talk to the Mad Hatter, and that was a problem. This song quotes so many fairytales, wow. I think It's a way to dissociate from the reality, that's why you're an Anti-Hero 🫠
Track 4- Snow on The Beach (ft. Lana Del Rey)
IT SOUNDS LIKE "Illicit Affairs"!!! I listened the extended version, and this song exales and smells like Lana. Absolut masterpiece. Weird but f*cking beautiful, like snow on the beach 😉
Track 5- You're On Your Own, Kid
This track is a lot relatable, feels like she knows me (I can say this about ALL her songs lol). It has SO MANY REFERENCES!!! "MAATHP", "TIWWCHNT" are examples. The fact that she was a kid delivering her demos to executives in a parking lot. The bullyings she suffered at school, the e.d. It hit's me so much, It's a beautiful sad track. Thank you darling 🥺
Track 6- Midnight Rain
This track feels purple blueish. Again I feel like "MAATHP" is referenced. It sounds similar like "Renegade" (definitely an Aaron Dessner production lmao thanks it's amazing/i love this song SO MUCH). Tay pls tell me that you're referencing "Daylight/Champagne Problems"...And I know who you're talking about hahahaha I LOVE THIS TRACK!!!!!!!
Track 7- Question...?
BLONDIE I FELT THE "Out Of The Woods" REFERENCE 🥵 This track makes so much sense, she mixes past and present, so cool. So many tracks I can make a parallel, i LOVE it!
Track 8- Vigilante Shit
It's my favorite. Tastes like victory and revenge. I felt the parallel between "I Did Something Bad" and "mad woman". It sounds like "I Know Places". It makes so much sense she's messing with me I'm in love with this track. "Lately I've been dressing for revenge/ Don't get sad, get even"
Track 9- Bejeweled ⭐️
ITS A MATCH! Our beloved "mirrorball" it's grateful for this turnaround. The music video is so perfect, I'm DEFINITELY ready for Speak Now TV✨
Track 10- Labyrinth
It reminds me a lot of "The Archer" again, as if it were a twist on the character of our darling track 5. What a delight to be able to listen to this song 💙 It hurts, of course, but it feels good. There's a million songs that remind me of this track, but are too many references for my swifitie head lmao 🤣. I know "this is me trying" and definitely labyrinth likes this song 🥹
Track 11- Karma
I laughed when I first listened to LMAO SO GOOD!!! I don't think It's necessary to talk about this track, It's self explanatory. "ME!" it's happy rn, have a sister to share the references. JOE ALWYN FIGHT WITH ME 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Track 12- Sweet Nothing 🥹
"I spy with my little tired eye" show us the pureness and youthful love of them. William Bowery I'm your fan, your songs always feels like home. It's confy, It's warming. It's a beautiful lyric track 🥺 she's expressing to us and him all her deep sensations and feelings. He is her soulmate. I can't express how I admire this song in english, even though I'm fluent. We have some words in Portuguese that unfortunately cannot be translated to the real meaning of what is this song. Wow.
Track 13- Mastermind
WOW TAYLOR!! I have NO words ENOUGH to tell you all what this song brings to THE WORLD ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The bridge simply caused me a breakdown 🫠 Sad sad sad sad sad but so relatable. I felt this punch in my whole body. When she points that he knows all along, we knew it too. You're a mastermind blondie, and he as well 😭❤️

F*ck f^ck f^ck f%ck WTF I'M F&CKING SOBBING RN 😭🥲 so strong, so so sad and wonderful. "this is me trying/august" girlies are lying on the floor rn. The lyrics, the production, everything about this track It's so well done.

B*TCH YOU'RE referencing DEATH BY A THOUSAND CUTS????!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAA BLONDIE YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN IT'S A LOT OF EASTER EGGS JUST FOR ONE FANDOM 🥵🥵🥵🥵 PLS LISTEN TO THIS TRACK, It smells like CROISSANT AND THE BREEZE IN A LAVANDER FIELD

I have to tell, It's my favorite song from Midnights. I am a truly speak now girlie, and I'm 19 and relate to this song. It's so personal and raw, I felt her despite and regret and PAIN. I cry so hard with this track. It feels like there's something stuck on my throat 🫥. It's definitely the most sad/desperate/ traumatic song/bridge she's ever done. I love this song, but it hurts too much. If I see this man one day, he's gonna beg me for forgive (and taylor, our special person). I'm sending you hugs and lots of love dear Taylor, really.
TRACK 20- Dear Reader ❣️
It's the perfect last track. A whole story. A whole album. The end (but not really, 'cause life's still there). She closed the album with a work of ART. Really, truly sad. But beautiful. It seems like a continuation of the speech she gave at NYU, it makes sense. It was very worth being able to listen and enjoy Midnights. I appreciate and thank you (Tay) with my whole soul for writing this song. It's a real and delicious hug. You, my dearest Taylor Swift, are a RARE person. You have a pure heart and an enlightened soul.

HA!! I am!! That woman and her music owns such a huge chunk of my heart. My favorite album is folklore, with Red (TV) being an extremely close second.
As for favorite songs, I named my top three from each album because I can’t choose just a few from her entire discography. That’s nearly impossible for me as you will see when you reach my faves from folklore because I cannot choose just three favorites from that album. It is one of the greatest albums in existence to me. 😅

Mirrorball - I'm a mirrorball//I can change everything about me to fit in
This line specifically is literally Di's character gimmick; she's a social chameleon/mirror that reflects either whoever people want her to be or themselves to deflect from who she really is.
Renegade - You fire off missiles 'cause you hate yourself //But do you know you're demolishin' me? //And then you squeeze my hand as I'm about to leave
When this song came out while I was figuring how Diana reacts to falling in love (spoiler; sis uses her bagage as an excuse and fucking runs 🏃🏾♀🏃🏾♀), I literally screamed! This is exactly the POV of her lover lamenting how she's pushes them away.
Jealousy, Jealousy - She was constantly compared to the blue blood debutantes and constantly called a gold digger behind her back *insert John Mulaney saying 'We know but hey!' gif*
Enough For You - This is more of a reflection after she marries Charles and seals her legitimacy as a Two and socialite. Like no matter how well she fits in and gives people exactly what they want, she'll never be enough and they were just waiting for her to fall (read: get divorced)
I put these together because the vibes and meanings behind these two songs are the biggest drivers of motivation for Diana to act the way she is especially after she marries up into the upper castes life. They also represent her relationship with the High Society specifically when she joined.
