the way i completely forgot about this ask until i wrote like two paragraphs in this and was like oh shit lmao

the source material is getting an hbo series bb you're in luck also ignore anna whatever as tess yes i respect her as an actress yes she is talented in a bunch of things i have not seen but ms annie wersching is the only tess in my heart and also if i have to endure tess being reduced to a powerbitch stereotype i will start foaming at the mouth. but also i have no feelings about this whatsoever <3

this is hard because i kind of had a stupid amount of confidence in the decisions i had them make in this and because i have ~a lot of experience~ in flying by the seat of my pants with writing lmaooooo a lot of the time with this ive had some degree of foresight when it comes to certain plot decisions. the only reason i have this in the first place is that with other things ive had kind of sort of plot revelations and then been like "well if i'd set that up three chapters ago it would have a huge impact i think but instead i guess it's just going in this one for a smaller impact" so i think i learned my lesson haha. also because this pairing nowadays has a small and sparse tag i really intentionally put in stuff to make it interesting (maybe the wrong word) to reread. like not Interesting interesting but i wanted there to be certain details that are more relevant on a reread than on an initial read because whenever i read stuff in small tags i tend to read it Multiple Times lmaoooooo and it's like if anyone like me is out there I Will Feed You. I Will Give You Food. you see i have this problem in which im like i dont want to act like i put thought into this because That's Embarrassing and i also dont want to seem like i take this too seriously because That's Embarrassing and also i dont want to act uppity or pompous or something But At The Same Time i do put a lot of thought into certain things and i feel like mentioning that and i dont really want to judge myself for that. it's complicated but also super uncomplicated. where was i going with this

OH right. so most of the plot decisions were made super concretely. like pre breakup arc in the nightmares chapters (which came out so much worse than i intended alkdjksjad;glksjg) when tess and joel talk about ellie Knowing (also legit it is such a trip to me that you dont know the context of that. a trip in a good way) she says we every time and he only ever says i even when she points out that this would affect both of them, and at one point i think he says that tess doesnt understand baseless violence which is 100% untrue, and then there's a bunch of window imagery i put in starting there because im a freak. so like For Once In My Life a lot of this was as planned as it could be. on occasion there's been Plot Revelations that get wedged in (the radio interlude chapter, which was a bit of an inelegant seam between prewritten things that didnt mesh well) but for the most part ive got tits out into every decision. like tess and ellie disagreeing about joel's choice was very planned though i imagine that kind of conversation could be executed many different ways i had my one way and stuck to it. so either way

where was i going with this. did i have a point.

OKAY. let's see. i think one of the big ~emotional beats~ so to speak was the ambush chapter and i think that's the favorite because that's usually where people comment if i remember correctly and initially i wasnt going to go with that tone At All haha. years ago i wrote everyday domestic scenes of mulder and scully from x files and had it all on this blog and it was plotless but largely in the same overarching universe (i say as if it was legit ever That Deep) and after writing this as a oneshot and being like you know? Kind of feel like doing that again. i figured i would just follow the same largely plotless path of legit just domesticity and leave it at that. and i think the first like five chapters are tonally different from the rest because i'd never really intended for it to have plot or really any depth whatsoever. in the end like. How do i say this in a way that wont be interpreted as uppity or something asldkjgalsdgjk like. when i did those mulder scully scenes i was very much a beginner and i think i didnt realize just how inherent that beginner-ness was to the concept itself. which isnt a bad thing! like people had fun with those so far as i remember. bizarrely enough i think people might still read those which. cringe. but you kno!!! but with a few years of distance from that kind of concept i think it was hard for me to Not try something else. especially with this universe in which it's just dense with storytelling opportunity. and also i felt as if the first few chapters were just like super super lighthearted and i wanted some angst factor. which is why in the end the angst factor plot itself is flimsy as fuck. like i did not care WHY they got attacked i just wanted that sweet sweet hurt/comfort cup of tea u feel. and after that i didnt really go for the plot too much But i did edge toward it a lot more. like i mean ultimately this is a romance like it was not intended to be plot heavy ever But it's more plot heavy than it couldve been. had i actually written it as i'd intended from the start i think it wouldve gotten old really fast. like nothing but lighthearted domesticity doesnt make sense in this context. for the first few chapters it doesnt necessarily kill the whole thing imo because like. that's the first few chapters. but after then if there was never any ~deeper thoughts~ i think it wouldve gotten reductive super fast.

hmmm what else. Because i am deciding to talk too much on the internet now.

oh in theory the whole breakup arc couldve been omitted and now in retrospect im like it's hilarious that like the next chapter after they got married i immediately peppered in hints that they would break up lkajsdglaksjgdlkj like wow. That lasted a long time. but like i mean i think with them it fits that they would do something like get married before they even said that they loved each other. like i can see them doing a massive workaround instead of doing a small and simple but vulnerable thing. makes sense 2 me. and like they definitely couldve stuck together in the end but 1 theres interesting storytelling in how maybe joel was too stubborn or maybe they grew apart in certain ways or blah blah blah and 2 I JUST LOVE A GOOD BREAKUP AND THEN RETURNING TO EACH OTHER ARC OKAAAAAAAAAY. legit. favorite trope. if i ever experienced that in real life i would claw my eyes out but in fiction it makes me FERALLLL. and also like i mean i lov these two for their dumb quirks but also like it would be a lil wrong to say there wouldnt be consequences for like. Not communicating haha. also again like the world this game is put in is so full of storytelling opportunities and im like Must Take Them All. like joel is stubborn as hell and shuts down when he's overwhelmed and there is growth in the first game (and in the second too but thats not really shown as much and is more left for the player to fill in the gaps i think) but also i think it would be super easy to regress in that sense and i had fun with putting him in those situations. and it's also super fun to have an additional person for the joel and ellie plots to bounce off of. like joel and ellie are two very stubborn people and having an extra person there to be like You Blithering Idiots has been a good time. im getting sidetracked. like it was fun to answer the question of how these two in a marriage neither of them can fully substantiate would communicate in hard times and the answer i personally found was that they both would end up breaking things. which was fun to write!!!!!!!!! but in theory couldve been prevented. maybe i just cant imagine this a different way haha. like Joel And Tess Learn Healthy Communication Skills Over Time. am i mean for saying that doesnt sound probable aldskjgalskdjgslkgj

OH LMAO THE MARRIAGE PART. that was also a big decision i guess. i wouldnt make it go differently alksdjglasdjg like. i definitely couldve written the context around that many different ways bc again this whole is full of opportunity But a frankly premature wedding just feels right to me. especially with like going from being stuck on survival to being safe for the first time in decades. and then having that sense of safety get boring and wondering why there was that super fast wedding in the first place. cant really imagine it going differently

there is later unposted stuff that could def have gone many different ways and that i tried to make go different ways but that would not be right to talk about akldsjaslkgdjsg so.

an excerpt from like chapter 1 of part 6 of pricks vs. zombies thats written like a story for no other reason than that i really wanted to. so here it is yea its saskia proposing to alice

i couldve probably done with sharing some stuff that takes place earlier in the ~*~*timeline*~*~ to make it make sense but like,, are you the boss of me??

(i will eventually post some stuff from earlier on but this is the first thing ive written down properly as of now hahaha)

also no i did not proofread this.

Alice’s heart ached slightly as she took in the gravity of quite how distant she felt from the occasion. A certain terrible part of her was wracked with jealousy as memories of Andrea tugged at the back of her mind. Alice had learned not to miss the people she’d known Before, but sometimes she’d allow herself to reminisce: a wedding before had been extravagant and excessive, all coated in a layer of glitter and frills. Now, a wedding was a couple of seasoned warriors, gripping onto each other almost for dear life, swaying to a scratched-up CD. This was so much better than anything Alice knew in her life before.

No amount of glitter could have improved upon the scene she saw in front of her: Lena and Frank. Mr and Mrs Abani. Just two people who were desperately in love. Maybe a few years ago Alice would have turned her nose up at love, instead opting for a wad of cash or a designer outfit. A few years ago, Alice would never have even dreamed that she would know the people she had come to surround herself with. How was she to have known that in time, she would come to know and love some of the bravest, strongest, most amazing people left in the world? How could she have ever guessed that she was worthy of the love she was surrounded by?

She had never loved anyone like she loved Saskia, she was sure of it. Sure, she had dated; she’d cared deeply for Andrea and her family; she loved her friends fiercely and passionately, but none of it compared to what she felt for Saskia. Alice struggled everyday to take in the staggering realisation that the feeling was apparently mutual. Alice was still gingerly learning what it was like not to pretend. She wasn’t withholding the ugly bits, which in itself was a completely brand new and liberating sensation. The people she had come to know in the years since the end of the world made her feel like the facade was unnecessary. Comfort found a beautiful face in Saskia Lerner.

The party was dying down, the sun setting on the day’s idyllic events: the remaining few guests lingered in a loose circle around Lena and Frank, no one quite ready to accept that the celebrations were almost over.

Saskia’s expression was slightly unreadable: she looked faraway, wrapped in thought as if whatever she was thinking was pulling at her, dragging her away from the present. She toyed absently with the necklace around her neck, the rings knocking against her pale collar bones. Alice wondered if Saskia was tangled in memories of her brother. She didn’t ask, instead opting to ask her the simple question:

‘What are you thinking, Saskia Lerner?’

Saskia looked taken aback for a second, as if stunned momentarily by the incredible complexity of the question. She disappeared into thought for another second as Alice waited in patient silence for the answer. She answered simply:

‘This is really weird,’

‘Weird?’ Alice repeated dumbly.

‘Yeah. A wedding. In the midst of all this. It should be comforting, I guess, but a wedding, when just yesterday we were busy killing zombies? It is just a little bit weird.’

‘I think it’s nice. They really love each other, and a wedding is the perfect thing to give everything a bit of normality.’

‘No, I totally agree with that. I guess I’ve just never been one for big affairs, really,’

‘Yeah, it’s weird. A few years ago I would have turned by nose up at something like this, but nowadays all I would want is to be close to my person,’

‘You’d want that?’

‘Of course I’d want that! It’s all anyone could ask for lately, isn’t it?’

‘Then why not do it?’

Alice’s breath caught in her throat. ‘W-What?’

‘Do you want to be my person? Do you want to stay close?’

‘Obviously, Sas-’

‘Then Fearless Leader, Princess, Alice Fierro.. Marry me?’

disclaimer: i don’t know what the fuck i’m doig, i didn’t proofread this or anything, i feel weird formatting it to look niceish when it’s bad but imma try anyways, i changed up minor details a bit into it and a good bit of it was written when i was half asleep so if you notice something’s wonky ignore it and/or lmk so i can fix it thanks. ANOTHER DISCLAIMER consider this somewhat of an intro i couldve just made it one long part since the next one is gonna be him too but oh well

summary: everything moves fast when you’re the ceo of a large company. you never have time to waste and when you want something, you get it. what do you do when what you want might not be used to the same lifestyle as you?

seokmin always had weird requests. it was nothing unusual for him to send you, somewhat of an assistant to him, on wild goose chases for random purposes. for that reason, you weren't particularly surprised when he told you to go to a small bookstore across town and buy exactly 15 copies of "The Case of The Missing Heart," a new murder mystery book that had just been published about a week before. you didn't bother questioning it like you might have back when you had just started here. you just grabbed your drink and purse, stood up from your desk, and smiled. "sure, boss." was the only reply you gave him, somewhat hummed in a tone of clear amusement, but he didn't seem to care. he flashed a pearly grin, sent you a wave, and turned back into his office as you turned to leave. there was nothing else to it.

soon enough there you were, scouring the relatively empty bookstore for your boss's most recent questionable request, and you found it. it had probably already been half an hour since you'd left work, you figured he'd probably expect you back in another half hour, and while you doubted he'd care too much, you still didn't want to be late. if you could call it late, that was. with that thought crowding your mind, you quickly snatched a book, then two, then three off the shelves. you would've continued, had you not been distracted by subtle movement out of the corner of your eyes.

standing there, to your utter surprise, was the grim reaper. or, well, you assumed it was more likely a very tall man under a grim-reaper cape, staring down at a game. a game that looked rather familiar from the corner of your eye, and with a risky glance away from the hooded figure and towards the game he was pulling off the shelf, you understood why.

"I worked on that game," you mused aloud, not entirely understanding why you felt the need to tell the grim reaper your life story. but it was too late to do anything about it now, wasn't it? he stilled for a moment, shocked, but slowly turned his head to look at you. you were pretty sure that somewhere under all that thick black fabric, you saw the glint of some silver-rimmed glasses and a few curls of hair.

"You did?" he asked, and if you were to give the grim reaper a voice, it would've probably been something similar to that. your mind briefly flashed back to the scene in goblin where eun-tak asked the goblin if he was the goblin in the library, but you smartly decided against recreating that for fear he might kill you. internally, you gasped. were you already dead? what if this was a test?

wonwoo, on the other hand, was horribly amused. he felt bad, finding amusement in a girl's struggles, but judging by the look on her face, she knew he caught her as soon as she saw his face. he lazily, reached up, finding no reason to continue hiding his identity anymore, and slipped his hood off. she seemed even more stunned. he almost had to bite his lip to hold his smile back, but he somehow managed to keep it at bay without such a show of amusement. she was cute, he noted, but she was also a liar. Wonwoo was friends with the creator of this game, had even made a few appearances to help when he could.

"that's interesting, i didn't see you working when i was there." he said. it was interesting, a change in character that any of his friends would've mocked for months had they seen it, but something about the awkward, familiar energy (familiar in the sense that in some way, she reminded him of himself) she held calmed him. he couldn't explain it, or really understand it, but he could tell she was nothing to be afraid of, she didn't have it in her to tell anyone that he was different around her than his image would suggest. nor did she have the guts to argue, which was also comforting because, well, neither did he.

contrary to his beliefs though, she felt a fire ignite in her veins at his words. the tips of her ears flushed red in embarrassment and she glanced around to make sure nobody was listening in. to her relief, there was nobody around.

"that's interesting, i didn't see you while i was working on it either. as someone credited on the back of the game, you'd think i'd recognize you if you were there." you hissed, crossing your arms defensively over your chest. it wasn't a particularly harsh hiss, but there was no denying the slightly confrontational diction you chose, and he was taken aback just as were you. you, of course, were proud of your work, didn't want that credit stolen from you by some grim-reaper cosplayer who just happened to go shopping and decided to pretend he knew everything about everything- you shut yourself up, knowing you should stop before you made yourself any angrier.

you knew you weren't exactly confrontational, and soon enough the adrenaline of your little outburst had passed and you were slowly cowering back to, avoiding his eyes and looking back to your bookshelf.

"what's your name?" he asked quietly, after quite a few moments of silent staring on his side, flipping the game to see the credits. you said you were on there, and of course you should know your own name.

you shot him a look out of the corner of your eyes, collecting more books off the shelf one at a time. "Why, so you can stalk me? i don't think so."

"oh, so you're admitting that you're not in the game credits?

"I never said that." you bit quietly, frowning to yourself. at this point, he had a bit of a frown on his lips as well. well, at least until he noticed the book you were pulling off the shelf.

"well, i published that book you seem to want so many copies of."

at this point, he was just being an ass. you knew for sure you didn't like this grim reaper. you weren't going to tell some random man off the streets your name, give him more opportunity to find and kill you, and he didn't seem to like that so he decided to mock you. well, it didn't sound like mocking when it fell from his lips but you could tell a mocking word choice when you heard one. you dished out a lot of them yourself, rather than actually confronting people.

"yeah, and i wrote it." you grumbled. with one big, bad idea of a swoop, you somehow managed to catch the rest of the 15 books that somehow fit on that shelf before you used your arm as a makeshift windshield wiper to knock them all in your pile and scurried off. but even though your encounter was brief, somewhat of a reserved argument between reserved people, it left him deep in thought. curious. wondering. and, of course needing that game more than ever before.

and then that was the end of it. you got back to work, followed seokmin's orders and studied more on game creation with the help of both him and the team working for him. you forgot about the cute but obnoxious grim reaper boy and continued on with day to day life. three months passed, to be a little more exact, until the next game launched, and seokmin threw a party. you were still too new to have experienced one of the launch parties before, but he always invited the people he worked most closely with and, of course, his friends. it was somewhat of a small event though, at least in comparison to the expectations you had for such a highly coveted event. or, at least you assumed it was because of the guest list. you didn't know much about your boss' personal life, but it was impossible not to know about seokmin's 12 high-end ceo friends because all of the young women in the building seemed to have a favorite. jeonghan was the name you heard the most. you weren't sure what he did, but you didn't doubt that he was probably gorgeous.

you just didn't find the time to look into it, as you were just finishing up school and devoting all extra time to your job as seokmin's assistant. you started out as an intern, but he liked your drive, your goals, and so he offered you a real job to help pay the bills and get you more experience. he didn't have to help you, but he did and you weren't going to make him regret it.

due to that, this would be your first time meeting any of his friends. you were a little nervous, but you felt the same way meeting anyone. rich, famous, cute as they may have been, you wouldn't let it make you any more nervous than usual. you had little time to be very interested in them, and they would never be interested in you anyways, you're just seokmin's assistant so what would be the purpose of it? theres no sense getting any more nervous around them than you would your mom's friends.

that thought, and any other, cleared when you walked in. it seemed normal. lavish, but that was to be expected. but before you had much of a chance to take in the decorations, you were swept into the madness by a familiar coworker.

time moved quickly, you were never granted with enough seconds to form proper thoughts or observations, feeling like a human hot potato as your coworkers passed you from conversation to conversation- which half the time you could only pretend to know shit about- each keeping you only until they found someone else to entertain themselves with. many of whom had already had just enough alcohol for everyone to tell they were drinking. it was somewhat entertaining, you thought as you finally snuck off to a corner off behind the snack table, slowly consuming a donut you grabbed off it in your escape. at least, until you bumped into something. originally, you thought it was a pole at first, or maybe a rather un-leafy plant, but upon feeling it stumble further back with a gasp, you realized it wasn't. with a squeak of surprise, you jumped around (almost tripping thanks to the heel on the back of your shoes) reaching to help catch the boy, but he had already caught himself and so you reaching for someone who wasn't actually falling caused you to fall, right into his chest.

he caught you with his hands on your upper arms, catching you with the tip of your nose mere centimeters away from smearing your foundation all over his pristine black suit jacket.

your breath is caught, a lump in your already-tight throat because you're so afraid that if you move at all you'll ruin his outfit. so you don't move. he moves you. slowly, he pushes you back up into your feet, neither of you meeting each other's eyes until you're steady, a safe distance away from him and his expensive looking suit.

oh, but when you do meet each other's eyes, all hell breaks loose between you. it takes mere seconds for you to recognize him, seconds of silently wondering where you recognized his face from until you unintentionally gasp aloud, "grim reaper!" at the same time as he gasps in a similar tone "bookstore girl!"

what happened to her was okay at all, but i can see how connor could’ve been “redeemed” if he had survived. i have a lot of life left being only 14 and maybe one day i will have a different opinion, but as it stands these are my thoughts on the matter. i sincerely apologise if i have said anything to upset you in these asks. p.s. i wasn’t following you when i replied to your post, i just saw it and thought i’d share my opinion, so you don’t need to worry about me unfollowing you

i agree that connors actions cant be justified, i agree that his parents couldve done better, i agree that nothing that happened to zoe was okay, and i agree that connor had issues.

in fact, i agree with a lot of what youve said, so im only going to talk about what i disagree with.

also, as a blanket statement, im going to ignore the book, because im not talking about the book, im talking about the musical. the book was made long after the musical came out, so a lot of it was affected by how the audience responded to the musical. in short, the fandom largely affected how the book was written, so im going to ignore it.

in your second ask, you said “i dont think that connor can be blamed fully for his actions and choices like you said he was”

i can see why you think that connor has bpd. its not unreasonable to believe he has bpd, but from what weve seen in the musical, we cant say for certain that he has bdp. saying he has bdp would be a headcanon, so trying to say connor is less responsible for his actions because of a disorder you cant prove he has is a bit of a weak argument.

youve made it clear that you dont think his actions are justified, what you are arguing is what he can be blamed for.

i really dont know how to explain that the vast majority of humanity has complete control of their actions. connor murphy, as a character, has complete control of his actions. he made the conscious choice to finish a container of milk, he made the conscious choice to push evan in the halls, and he made the conscious choice to make up for it by signing evans cast.

his actions in the first few scenes of the musical prove that he has the ability to recognize when hes done something wrong and try to make it better. but he evidently didnt try very hard to improve his relationship with zoe.

so yes, i do believe he is fully to blame for abusing his sister. maybe he does act out sometimes, but that doesnt change the fact that we know hes capable of not being a dick, as shown by that scene with evan. but he was never shown to apologize for his behavior towards zoe, and only ever kept behaving that way towards her. so yes, connor can be blamed fully for his actions and choices. that shouldnt be a thing i have to argue, but i guess it is. (see: “decisions are executive…”)

in your third ask, you said “zoe isnt seen to be patient and understanding to connor after all he has done which is totally fair, but it would cause connor to lash out at her.”

youre 14, so im going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you didnt intend to partially blame zoe for her abuse, but you partially blamed zoe for her abuse.

id like you to show me a single instance where zoe provoked connor to cause him to lash out at her. just one. no, im not allowing the book as evidence because i dont care about the book, and i havent read it.

when you examine zoes behavior in the one scene she has with connor, she doesnt say anything directly to him. she stays out of his way because she knows if she doesnt, hes going to lash out at her.

why would you even say that zoe’s behavior towards connor caused him to lash out at her? why would you say that? first of all, its not true. second of all, if you didnt intend to shift some of the blame towards zoe with this argument, you wouldnt have said it at all. that is the definition of victim-blaming.

id like to address something you said in your fifth ask. you said “i know that the character [connor] was a bad person and his actions throughout what we saw were terrible, but he wasnt the same as someone who didn’t have any underlying issues to deal with.”

both parts of this are true. im not disagreeing with any of this, but also… so? he had issues, okay. i know that. i just dont care.

you know hes a bad person who does bad things which cant possibly be justified, so why are you trying to defend him? if what hes done cant be justified, and he never improved as a person, why defend him?

connor murphy isnt a character deserving of pity. hes not a character worth defending.

he abused his sister. nothing can make that okay. he also had issues.

those are the facts. him having issues doesnt make him worth defending, so stop defending him.

hey guys!!! this is a really beefy revamped drabble, i am absolutely begging you to read at least part of this, and like/rb this cuz i couldve spent the time i used writing this to write, like,, the essay i have due tomorrow

Patrick knelt down at a specific tree. It looked rather dead from all the cold, but he suspected it would come to life after the prolonged winter found itself ending; on the trunk was a heart with initials inside it. "Joseph, it should be right here. Good luck with the snow, I'm far too weak to help."

The human fixed his collar to cover up his reddened cheeks. "What is it we're looking for, again?" He asked, stepping up. Patrick got out of his way to let him start digging, and adjusted his musket. Though no one had gotten hurt in a month, the townsfolk still reported seeing the undead animals roaming about the surrounding forests, and they had to keep careful.

"A sizeable wooden box. It was a birthday present, I was going to dig it up once the problem with my father was over, but… I suppose I forgot until recent times."

Joe laughed, his breath saturating the air. "I'd love to hear the story behind that," He said, and the snow he shoveled away appeared to be thankfully less packed than it was closer to the town.

It was a beautiful spring day, and Louis had set up an easel, though he was taking a break from his charcoal and paints for the moment. After all, a portrait wasn't the only point of the date. Patrick sat up, as well, and pushed the platter of cheese and fruits closer to Louis. "Is that lace on your collar?" Patrick asked when his love finally pulled off his vest, leaving them both down to just their undershirts and breeches.

"I was hoping you'd notice. I got this shirt tailored while I was in the capital, I thought you'd love it."

"I'd love it more if you took it off, Louie." Patrick grabbed a raspberry off of the platter, leaving it between his teeth for a moment before biting down. "Really, you're very handsome in it. Can I see how your painting's coming along?"

Louis adjusted his glasses and pushed a hand through his thick, dark curls. "I'll show it to you once it's done, Patrick. It'll be better as a surprise."

"The last surprise I had ended up with me sweltering in my room, bandaging up my arm."

Louis, who had been pouring himself a cup of wine, stopped halfway through Patrick's speech. "The differences between your father and I are quite numerous," He said between gritted teeth. "We ought to deal with him soon, hm? I can't bear how depressing it is to see what he's done to you."

"I really can't imagine how things will happen when we confront him. I can't have him turn you."

"Me neither. How about I work for another fifteen minutes before we take another break?"

"Aye, Patrick, we've hit solid ground. Ah, Patrick..?"

He pressed a hand to his cheek and found that tears had begun to freeze. "That's good, Joseph. It can't be more than a foot or two lower." He said, realizing that Joe likely wanted to hear about the story rather than watch him clam up as he thought over it. It was really too late for him to say anything, though, so he instead wiped the tears from his eyes and tried his best to concentrate on his surroundings.

The painting was clearly of the scene, with the beautiful forest and the creek in the background, and with the blanket they were lying on in focus. On it, obviously, was Patrick in the pose Louis had him in, but slightly differently, for Louis had also painted in himself, and it appeared as if they had just pulled away from a kiss. In the foreground was their food, the whole thing painted in a lovely, hazy manner. "Louis, I… this is really quite touching, hm?" He said, finding it difficult to compose words.

"I'd love for it to become a reality," he said, removing the painting from Patrick's grasp and placing it in the box he brought with him. "See, since I know you won't be able to bring these home with you, I was thinking we'd seal the box and bury it, then come back on the birthday after we finish dealing with your father."

"Oh, that's a lovely plan, Louie. Let's get to the kissing part, please."

Louis's lips felt less chapped than usual, tasting of cheese and fruit and wine. It wasn't long before he pushed Patrick down and settled arms around him, and Patrick managed to get a hand behind Louis's head, pulling lightly on his cropped hair. It was quite nice, being able to tilt his head to both better their position and keep his lover's glasses from pressing uncomfortably into his cheek.

A hand found its way to Patrick's waist, tugging on his shirt in a way that suggested to Patrick that, for how smart and clever Louis was, he still struggled with undressing someone. That was fine, though, since Patrick could use his hand to pull Louis off of his for just long enough to pull off his shirt, and it was at this point that Patrick realized he couldn't do much else but tug near Louis's collar to have him reciprocate the action, not wanting to dirty the lace.

For some reason, Louis started to laugh, a giggle stifled by a sleeve. "Oh, my love, my darling, my—" He stopped, pulling off his shirt and knocking his glasses off with it. "When should we stop and head back?"

"Well, not now, we only just started kissing."

"It'll get dark come a couple hours."

"I can handle my father being mad at me, just… let's keep going, darling."

Louis thought a moment, then obliged.

Joe grabbed Patrick's arm and pulled him to the hole that was dug. "I know how weakened you are in this cold, but I won't be able to pull this out by myself."

"I… yes, I suppose I can try to help. How are you planning on doing this?"

"Well, there's most of the perimeter cleared out, so if we can get our hands under it, we should be able to pull it out just fine. Seems well preserved."

"Good, good, that's good."

It took less time than either of them thought for it to be removed, and after deciding against going through the trouble of covering the whole back up, they began to head back home, Patrick promising he'd open it up and examine the contents by the heat of the fireplace.

Louis had gotten on to digging a hole for the box before Patrick had even pulled his stockings back on, his cheeks still feeling overly hot. "People don't get to sleep this disheveled," He mumbled, grabbing his vest and watching how beautiful Louis was whenever he did anything.

"I think I've got a comb and hand-mirror somewhere in my bag, my love."

Patrick laughed. "How egotistical of you. Lucky you're so handsome, otherwise I bet I'd hate you."

"And if you weren't so handsome, I'd say that that's shallow of you," Louis quipped. He turned and grabbed the box, settling it in the hole he dug and repacking the rest of the hole with dirt. Watching for a moment how Patrick was still pulling on clothes, Louis headed to his bag and threw a comb in Patrick's direction. "Here, to make sure we remember where it's buried, I'll carve something on this tree, okay?"

Patrick pulled on his overcoat and shoes, and fixed his hair as best he could. "You're so smart, Louie, darling. I'm so glad you haven't left town for something bigger, yet."

"I'm not gonna leave until you're father's taken care of. Then I'll go and work for the royal court, and I'll come back as much as possible to see you. You'll become Marquis, won't you, after your father's taken care of?"

"Oh, yeah, I suppose that's what'll happen to me. Wonder how that'll work, hm."

They cleaned up and, with Louis's hand at Patrick's back, they headed back to town.

Once they got the box open, its contents were clear. Patrick pulled out the painting first and tried his best not to start crying right then. "Your great grandfather was an incredible man," He mumbled, setting down the canvas. "We'll have to find a frame the right size, for this."

"You knew him?" Joe asked.

"Better than I've ever known anyone, Joseph," Patrick said. "I forgot about the painting, but if you're curious as to what my life was like a hundred years ago, I suppose you can stare at it for a while."

The rest of the box held a beautiful but now old-fashioned coat, some jewelry, and a few letters that Patrick decided against reading immediately, out of fear that he would break down then and there. "Patrick, something's written on the back of this," Joe said. Without giving the vampire so much as a moment to set down the coat and glance over, he began reading it. "My love, though times are tough, I promise you that you'll be remembered by me forever. Though I fear our time together is short, I'll—oh, he was rather, ah, raunchy, hm..?"

Patrick laughed and hoped Joe couldn't hear the lump building in his throat. "Louis was the smartest, funniest, most handsome man I've ever met," He, keeping his gaze away from Joe. "It was so easy to be with him."

Joe snorted. "Yeah, clearly. I'll see if I can find a frame in my father's manor."

"I'd bet you could find more of his paintings there, too. Your mother, his granddaughter, would be good to ask—she has kept most of them, I do believe."

"Will do, Marquis. Y'know, I didn't think of you as, like, someone who ever had love. Let alone having it be, um, my great grandpop."

Patrick laughed, though perhaps it could be described more accurately as a sob.

unpopular opinion:

s1: really nostalgic atmospheric lovingly-made slow-paced and optimally filmed (directed, cinematography, art direction, consecutive pallette, great editing, written, LIGHTING, props, TONE) tribute to the 80s through its use of homage-like film moments, cinema archetypes, political horror, magical mundane, and memory-wise

s2: literally none of that and used the 80s as window dressing rather than to enhance and enrich the plot in a truly immersive and engaged/active way

im really surprised actually when i see constant praise that this show is such an amazing recreation of 80s cinema when objectively s2 decreased in quality so much. like it is almost an entirely different show in s2 and seemed to take every element of s1 and instead of expanding upon it, reproduced and regurgitated it in more bloated and less narratively-progressive manner. but for s1, i agree with the praise.

i always wonder if netflix forced them to come up with a s2 as fast as possible to bank on the show's popularity and thus they kind of just carbon copied s1 in a sillier, bigger, more cgi, less thoughtful, more disney ? way (- see: suddenly the main antagonist of the show The Lab is now their good pal and hopper, the disenchanted government critic vietnam war vet who spent s1 as a reserved and tormented detective uncovering their horrifying lies to his own peril but to help a friend regain a child in a way that he could not, literally works with and for them?, el literally comes back through a hole 5 feet from where she disappeared mere seconds later negating her whole beautiful 80s film glory sacrifice when she could still be involved but not return so simply and quickly? nancy and mike who both lost friends to trauma, discovered an alt world, and emotionally finally connected never have even 1 conversation in s2? jonathan has no scenes and never once talks to steve bc apparently since only 1 of them can date nancy they no longer speak or debrief or wonder about the horrifying interdimensional monster they fought together? karen who was a huge mirror to joyce and maternal presence in the show is pretty much written out? the whole fascinating and pivotal political and government angle to the show is written out? el has a literal blood aunt but she gets left with hopper in a very plot devicey type way? the list is literally endless for every single character), when it seems it wouldve been more faithful to their vision to do something less chummy.

it seems like the show wouldve been a more loosely structured dnd-esque adventure of the core 4 losing and gaining friends, fighting villains, and maturing along the way as they grew to adulthood, but that kind of got derailed into a more freestyle, less tight plot - which didnt really work at all with this.

i feel like the only things that were original to s2 were will's amazing arc in s2 as the groundwork for that was laid in s1, and kali who never got the screentime or exposition she deserved in a season which had terrible pacing and editing. the duffers always speak of wanting to add an element of human evil to the show with billy but... they had one. The Lab and the government experiments. that remains the scariest villain of the show to date and i always wonder why it was dropped. and with better writing those things could be linked or it couldve had breadcrumbs to that effect in s2 (i always assumed billy was also an experiment as s3 stuff seems to confirm but, ... it couldve been written way, way better).

st is not like say breaking bad which has a perfectly consistent tone in every single ep for 5 seasons, which made that show one of the very few modern masterpieces for its commentary of villainy, societal expectations, the half man half beast trope, as well as the destructive nature of our modern economy, social expectations, and health system etc.

im not saying st is a bad or unenjoyable show - its an awesome and fun show that i love. i was just v surprised by s2 given the quality of s1 and am always surprised at the praise it gets for being such a consisent and beloved 80s throwback when s2 had honestly none of that vibe at all. i hope we go back to s1 type vibe with the badass horror blood and guts throwback.

I wasn't under the impression they're close at all. Just because you pay to do the deed don't mean jack and neither have been very forthcoming without having serious strings attached/one hell of a mental game of chess going on.
