Cosmic latte
"Cosmic latte" refers to the average color of the universe as determined by a team of astronomers led by Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry. In 2002, they conducted a study to determine the color of the universe by combining light from over 200,000 galaxies.
After analyzing the spectral data from these galaxies, the researchers calculated the average wavelength of light and determined that the color of the universe, when viewed as a whole, is a pale beige or light brown. They humorously named this color "cosmic latte" due to its resemblance to the color of milky coffee.
The color was arrived at by combining the light emitted by stars of different ages and colors in the observed galaxies. It represents a composite color that takes into account the distribution and intensity of light throughout the universe.
The discovery of the cosmic latte color provides an interesting perspective on the overall composition of the universe. It indicates that the combination of stars and galaxies across vast distances creates a uniform hue when viewed from a distance.
While the term "cosmic latte" is not an official scientific term, it has gained popularity in popular science discussions and has become a recognizable way to describe the average color of the universe. It serves as a playful and relatable way to conceptualize the vastness and complexity of the cosmos.

being so absorbed in obscure and weird history and happenings that i forget this isn't common knowledge. talking to my mom about the man who is speculated to have potentially been the TRUE first person on Mount Everest, George Mallory, and i just casually go "obviously you know that bodies on Mount Everest don't decay," and she just goes "..no, i don't, back up?"

one of my favourite weird historical facts is that the Assassins once threatened Saladin by sneaking into his tent and leaving one of their distinctive knives on his pillow, along with two cakes of the bread only they made. "hi, these scones verify that we can kill you. bon appetit!"
(this weird medieval fact brought to you by the House of Mourning line edits, which I am nearly finished!)

Wow! signal -
In 1977, a radio signal was detected from outer space that lasted for 72 seconds. This signal, known as the "Wow! signal," remains one of the most intriguing and unexplained mysteries in the field of astronomy.
The Wow! signal was detected by astronomer Jerry R. Ehman while he was analyzing data from the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University. The signal was so remarkable that Ehman circled it on the printout and wrote "Wow!" next to it, giving it its name.
What makes the Wow! signal particularly intriguing is its unusual characteristics. It was a narrowband radio signal that appeared to originate from the Sagittarius constellation. The signal's intensity was over 30 times higher than the background noise, indicating a potential artificial origin.
Despite extensive efforts to re-detect the signal and determine its source, it has never been observed again. Scientists have proposed various explanations, including potential extraterrestrial origins, but no definitive conclusions have been reached.
The Wow! signal continues to spark fascination and speculation, representing one of the most enigmatic and unexplained phenomena in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. It serves as a reminder of the vast mysteries that exist beyond our planet and the ongoing quest to understand the universe.

Weird History: We don’t think anything of store mannequins today, but for a brief moment in the 1930s, one of the most famous celebrities of the day was a 100-pound mannequin named Cynthia.
Tumblr media
She was designed by Lester Gaba & started as a publicity stunt to humorously demonstrate how lifelike the mannequins had become, & quickly turned Cynthia into an overnight sensation.
Tumblr media
She was given a credit card from Saks Fifth Avenue, her own newspaper column, and despite suffering chronic laryngitis (according to her creator) Cynthia even had a successful radio show.
Tumblr media
She had box seats at the Met Opera, received freebies from Tiffany and Cartier, graced the cover of Life magazine and was even invited to the wedding of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
Tumblr media
Cynthia received tons of fan mail, too.
Tumblr media
Her back was pretty realistic.
Tumblr media
Before leaving to fight in WW2, Gaba sent Cynthia to stay with his mother in Missouri, where he left strict instructions that she was to be pampered like a real star, which entailed weekly visits at the best salon in town.
Tumblr media
Cynthia finally met her demise when she slipped from a chair in the beauty salon, and shattered into a thousand pieces. Her death was reported in the press and Lester Gaba played the distraught creator.
Tumblr media
Gaba made another Cynthia and this one could talk w/recordings and a jaw that moved. He even got her a talk show, but the magic was over and the public lost interest. According to one source, Gaba left her at a friend’s attic in the East Village, where it may still be, collecting dust.

UN PIANO DE CHATS | LA NATURE [V.11, N.541, 1883]
A theoretical device, referred to as a Katzenklavier (or ‘Cat Piano’), would help establish psychiatry as a modern discipline in 19-century Germany. The Katzenklavier would have the cats “in a row with their tails stretched behind them. And a keyboard fitted out with sharpened nails would be set over them. The struck cats would provide the sound. A fugue played on this instrument—when the ill person is so placed that he cannot miss the expression on their faces and the play of these animals—must bring Lot’s wife herself from her fixed state into conscious awareness,” as described by Robert J. Richards.

I just learned about this thing called “anchoresses” and they are women who volunteered to be walled up in churches for a simple life of writing and studying. They would have three windows- one to the church for services and communion, one for food and one to a courtyard.
Now I’m not religious and don’t need the service but honestly the rest sounds okay to me. A simple life of reading, studying and chilling with no one to bother me while my spirit helps hold up the building? Sounds like my kind of job.
