Product Spotlight…Unity Tactical Hot Button
Tumblr media
Long have I been a proponent of a rifle mounted weapon light. I’ve used a number of different lights over the years. Lights from Streamlight and Arisaka. More recently I’ve been using a lot of Cloud Defensive lights, mainly their REIN series. I’ve mostly been a fan of just a good old push button tail cap. You know, the ones that have a full on and also have a momentary on function. Now Cloud Defensive has a very nice weapon light tape switch which I received with a full kit from them with their REIN Micro 2.0. Since that experience, I’ve been exploring other viable options for light control for any additional lights I might purchase in the future. Enter…Unity Tactical with their Hot Button.
Tumblr media
I had been on the search for a new light for my recently built Geissele 10.3” SBR in DDC. Of course I wanted to find a light with an additional shade of anodized FDE, but I also wanted to take this opportunity to try something different than a traditional tail cap or light switch pressure pad. The light that I ended up choosing is a Modlite System PLH v2 that I picked up from Brownells. This particular light came with only the body, light head, battery and a charger. I would still need a tail cap and a rail mounted lighting switch. The Modlite uses Surefire compatible tail caps, so I opted for one that accepts the Surefire pressure switch connection. When looking for switch options over at Brownells, I found Unity Tactical. I had heard of Unity Tactical in the past, but had yet ordered or used one of their products. The Hot Button in FDE with a 7 inch cable connection happened to be in stock, so that’s what I ordered.
Tumblr media
Upon receiving both my new light and Unity Tactical hot button from Brownells… I looked over the Hot Button and really like the idea. Rather than having a larger sized light pressure switch on the top of the rail, the Hot Button is a smaller device that takes up just a single M-Lok slot in my rail. With an SBR with limited rail space, this is a welcomed addition. The side of the Hot Button that faces the shooter has the button itself. Very much like the tail cap buttons I’m typically fond of, it has both a momentary on as well as an always on press. It’s angled on both sides which with my grip using my left hand, it feels very natural to place my hand upon the rail with my thumb pressing against the button for that moment I need to activate the light. On the opposite side of the shooter, the Hot Button is also angled, but with serrations that could easily be placed against a barrier for added stability. Overall, the design of the Hot Button can act as kind of a hand stop.
Tumblr media
So far I’ve been thoroughly impressed with this new light switch from Unity Tactical. I do understand they have a couple other designs as well. Looking forward to trying out some of their other options when I find the need for a new light switch.

Edc gun, keep it factory or have it decked out with mods?
So let's have the discussion about whether or not to modify your everyday carry gun. There has been the debate for decades now after aftermarket accessories and upgrades have come out about whether modifying your everyday carry gun will hurt you in court. Granted this only pertains to whether or not you ever have to use your everyday carry gun in self defense.
I honestly don't get why people have such a big issue with modifying or upgrading parts on their everyday carry gun. In my opinion as long as you aren't putting anything hateful or pro death on it then go for it.
Aftermarket triggers ofter are a great first modification as you are able to reduce trigger pull and reset. This allows for quicker and smoother follow-up shots on target. Now who wouldn't want that on an everyday carry gun? You also can get the trigger shoes on a variety of colors so it will add some pizazz to the gun.
Weapon lights allow you to see and confirm your target in low and no light (at night) situations. You should always be able to identify and confirm your target as being a threat before pulling the trigger. How do you do this at low or no light without a pistol light? Some will say get a hand held but I say "why not both?". If I have to draw my pistol I want both hands on it if possible.
Barrels, often aftermarket barrels are indeed an upgrade from the factory barrels. Most aftermarket barrels have better feed ramps, tighter tolerances, better twist rates, and you can add extra length by getting a threaded barrel. This all adds up to added accuracy at further distances. Is this absolutely necessary for better accuracy? No, but why wouldn't you want every bit of accuracy advantages possible?
Magwells, in Facebook groups I've seen this comment a lot "magwells are for race guns and not for edc guns"......what?!?! That makes no sense. The point of a magwell is to allow the user to more effectively insert a magazine (not clip) without looking by creating a funnel effect for the magazine to slide into. This allows for faster reloads. Now if you are getting shot at and needed to reload wouldn't you want to reload as fast as possible? I 100% would.
Red dots, same as magwell I've seen a lot of people say that they're for race guns only. Again this makes no sense. Big brained people out there in the gun community have ran the data between people shooting a pistol with and without a red dot. They have proven that red dots on pistols makes the shooter quicker and more accurate. Red dots aren't going to make you an Olympic gold medal winning shooter by just adding it but the data is there. So again, why wouldn't you want to put more shots on target quicker with less misses?
Painting your gun aka cerakoting it is hugely popular now days. Cerakoting your gun is like getting a tattoo or giving your car, truck, or motorcycle a custom paint job. It adds a person flare or touch to it so why not do it? As long as you're not having skulls and hate symbols painted on then there is absolutely no reason not to.
All in all have the best gun possible in my opinion is a must. You need to train with it though to effectively. Just because you have a Gucci everyday carry gun doesn't mean you'll be a fantastic shooter so go out there and train with it. Get it dirty with carbon, put scratches on it, once you've done thay then do it again.
I also recommend having an insurance company for self defense like Second Call Defense. They are by far the best in the business and the only ones to do the insurance model correctly for firearms/weapons.
Now, where do you get your everyday carry gun modifications / accessories? I get mine mainly from Brownells because they have a humongous inventory. I also use the coupon code "WLS10" to save 10% on all my orders over $150.
Remember to chose dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery everyday!

Best Light for Glock 19: Here’s Your Ultimate Guide 2022
Tumblr media
Do you want to be able to precisely focus on and see your target even in the darkest conditions? The best light for the Glock 19 should be chosen with extreme caution for this reason, I suppose.
And because I've been shooting for a while, I've tried a ton of weaponlights, each with unique useful features and performance levels. I can thus basically tell what works and what doesn't.

Product Spotlight…Modlite PLHv2 Weaponlight
Tumblr media
We live in exciting times in regards to the shear number of firearms, firearm platforms and accessories available to the consumer. Having multiple companies out there competing hard for your dollar and patronage benefits us in the end. The weapon light category is surely no different. There are many, many weapon light companies out there today. Some, such as Surefire and Streamlight have been around for many, many decades. Then there are younger companies, such as Cloud Defensive and Modlight. Recently I had the need for a new weapon light to mount onto my Geissele DDC SBR. Of course it had to be in some form of FDE or tan finish. I decided to go ahead and try out one of the Modlite offerings and I’m so glad that I did.
Tumblr media
Brownells has a number of the different light configurations that Modlite offers. I decided to purchase the PLHv2 version from Brownells. They offer this weapon light in a short config that uses the popular 18350 rechargeable battery as well as a longer version that uses the 18650 rechargeable battery. Since this was going on a short rifle with minimal rail space, I opted for the shorter 18350 scout light version in FDE. Brownells has a couple of different variations of this light that have slightly different price points. I knew that my plan was to add some sort of external light switch or pressure pad and luckily, they opffer this light with the body, light head, battery and battery charger, but without a tail cap. This cuts the price down somewhat and allows the end user to use that money saved towards their preferred tail cap. Modlites are compatible with most Surefire compatible tail caps. Since my plan was to run a pressure switch, I opted for a standard Surefire tailcap with the pressure switch socket.
Tumblr media
Once I received the light, I was extremely pleased with it’s overall fit and finish. It is just a weapon light after all, but small details do count somewhat at the price point. The specifications on this particular version is approximately 1350 lumens and 54,000 candela. This thing is super bright for such a small weapon light. All parts are made in the U.S.A. which is important to me, especially considering the cost of a quality weapon light such as this one. It also has a lifetime warranty against any defects wehich is comforting. If the light ever fails, your investment is covered. When testing the beam in an enclosed space, the hot spot is very well defined, but not overly so that your target is washed out. It appears that this particular light would have a very good throw at distance as well.
Tumblr media
So in conclusion, this was a purchase I had on my radar and honestly sorry I didn’t try out a Modlite any sooner than I did. It works perfectly on my Geissele 10.5” DDC SBR build I recently completed. If you’re in the market for a new weapon light, you owe it to yourself to take a long hard look at what Modlite has to offer. This definitely won’t be my last Modlite purchase.
