A catatonic woman awakened after 20 years. Her story may change psychiatry.
New research suggests that a subset of patients with psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia may actually have autoimmune disease that attacks the brain.

New research findings suggest that some patients’ psychiatric conditions may be caused or aggravated by underlying autoimmune diseases. It’s hoped that a better understanding of the links between immunological issues and psychiatric conditions like schizophrenia and depression could open new paths to treatments for such patients. Sander Markx, director of precision psychiatry at Columbia University, spoke to The Washington Post about successfully treating patients with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder by treating their underlying cases of lupus. One patient was even able to leave a psychiatric hospital where she’d lived for nearly two decades after being catatonic for almost 20 years. The SNF Center for Precision Psychiatry and Mental Health at Columbia is now working on autoimmunity screenings on patients at long-term facilities in New York. Thomas Smith, chief medical officer for the New York State Office of Mental Health, said such analyses could help “save someone’s life, get them out of the hospital, have them live in the community, go home.”

The Washington Post examined Israeli claims about al-Shifa as well as the evidence Israel
presented to the world after it took control of the hospital.
It looks like other than a few PR videos, Israel presented almost no evidence to back up its claims.
Israel claimed that:
- five hospital buildings were directly involved in Hamas activities;
- the buildings sat atop underground tunnels that were used by militants to direct rocket attacks and command fighters;
- that the tunnels could be accessed from inside hospital wards
The WashPost found:
1. No evidence of military use by Hamas of the rooms connected to the tunnels
2. No evidence the five hospital buildings identified by the IDF were connected to the tunnel network
3. No evidence the tunnels could be accessed from inside hospital wards
The Post concludes that “the evidence presented by the Israeli government falls short of showing that Hamas had been using the hospital as a command and control center”.

A reminder... PREMATURE BABIES DIED FOR THIS. THE MATERNITY WARD WAS SNIPED REGULARLY. A BOMB WITH BLADES WAS DROPPED ON THE COURTYARD. THE IOF TERRORIZED HUNDREDS OF FLEEING GAZANS, MURDERED THE HOSPITAL DIRECTOR, ALL FOR TUNNELS THAT WEREN'T EVEN THERE. DOCTORS HELD PRESS CONFERENCES PLEADING WITH THE IOF TO LEAVE THEM ALONE AND SHOWING THE WORLD THE HOSPITAL HAD NO SIGNIFICANCE TO HAMAS.
I’m so… so fucking tired. Please don’t give up on Gaza. Please.

You've probably received a million notifications about this, but a WashPost article quoted one of your tweets (https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2022/11/21/disney-parks-iger-chapek-ceo/) It was a little surreal to see someone whose work I followed for years show up in a completely different context!
