#warner bros merger

In the early 70s Sesame Street was created with an eye towards educating poor, inner-city children for free, and became a massive hit with all children. In 2016, faced with going off the air forever after facing conservative efforts to destroy public broadcasting since basically its beginning, new episodes became a timed exclusive for premium cable network HBO. In 2022 HBO Max, newly merged with and taken over by reality TV channel Discovery, removed Sesame Street episodes and spin-offs from streaming as a tax write-off and scheme to avoid paying residuals.

Okay, what?
I'm sorry but this is the biggest goddamn fucking lie ever told.
"None of the shows and movies being axed for drawing large audiences." That's not what I heard!
I haven't gotten into Infinity Train, but from what I heard, it was one of the best shows ever to appear in the 2020s.
Hell, look at those who adore OK KO Let's Be Heroes! and all those 200 episodes of Sesame Street being removed. You know, the show parents watch with their children to help educate them!
I don't know what David Zaslav was thinking about doing this HBO and Discovery merge; and I get it, supply and demand, capitalism and all this bullshit, but here's the thing:
THESE SHOWS AND PROGRAMS COULD'VE GONE INTO DEBT IF IT WERE FOR HBO OR WARNER BROTHERS!
WARNER BROS, YOU WOULD'VE NOT HAVE A JOB IF IT WEREN'T FOR CARTOON NETWORK!
I know I am someone that posts about Miraculous, Monster High, Disney, but now I cannot hold my tongue anymore!
This needs to be talked about!
This needs to be stopped!
This needs to be spread around!
And everyone needs to be aware of this!

I’m seeing plenty of excellent posts on tumblr addressing how infuriating the Warner Brothers Discover merger is, but my dashboard’s circle of influences has yet to produce for me a more comprehensive sequence of events or list of shows being taken down, so IMMA START
According to Polygon, here is a complete list of the nearly 40 shows HBO Max has taken down:
12 Dates of Christmas
About Last Night
Aquaman: King of Atlantis
Close Enough
Detention Adventure
Dodo
Ellen’s Next Great Designer
Elliott From Earth
Esme & Roy
The Fungies!
Generation Hustle
Generation
Infinity Train
Little Ellen
Mao Mao, Heroes of Pure Heart
Messy Goes to Okido
Mia’s Magic Playground
Mighty Magiswords
My Dinner with Herve
My Mom, Your Dad
Odo
OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes
The Ollie & Moon Show
Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures
Ravi Patel’s Pursuit of Happiness
Select Sesame Street specials
Make It Big, Make It Small
Share
Squish
Summer Camp Island
The Not-Too-Late Show With Elmo
The Runaway Bunny (special)
Theodosia
Tig n’ Seek
Uncle Grandpa
Victor and Valentino
Yabba Dabba Dinosaurs
HBO Max has also removed about 200 episodes of Sesame Street; I am presuming those certain specials mentioned up above are included. A certain Batgirl movie that would’ve brought back Michael Keaton also got canned.
This is all because Warner Brothers Discovery wants to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single streaming service in order to compete with the likes of Disney and Netflix. Over the course of the next ten+ years they hope to have a base of about 130 million subscribers. It’s also worth noting that, according to The Washington Post, “Warner Bros. Discovery was formed in April, when AT&T’s WarnerMedia unit and Discovery completed their merger, and started with some $55 billion in debt.”
I had yet to see any tumblr posts talking about what Warner Brothers Discovery really plans to do with these programs, and frustratingly it’s unclear at this time how many, if any, of them will make it onto the new streaming platform. (And to be fair, from what I’ve perceived this whole hot mess has been happening on such a rapid timescale it’s been hard to pivot before the rug gets ripped out from underneath us again.) Warner Brothers Discovery through HBO Max would’ve had to keep paying residuals to the creators of these shows, so locking the shows in financial limbo looks a hell of a lot like a massive tax write-off. They’re cutting their losses as much as they can now in order to compete as an even bigger monopoly, but their best bet to pay off their $55 million debt is really to include all the shows onto the platform and let the debt and residuals pay for themselves via the subscription service. And even then, let’s be clear, Sesame Street should be free.
This, I imagine too, is a developing story and we’re bound to hear about some more fuckery in the near future.

I’m just saying it’s kinda suspicious that HBO max deleted a bunch of loved shows of their platform with no warning to the hardworking creators, cast and crew right before launching the GoT spine off and last of us trailer :/

When they inevitably make a marvel dc crossover movie, will it be a sharing situation like disney has with sony over spiderman, or will it be because disney and warner bros merge into one giga-conglomerate? I say merge because I think of them as roughly equal in scope, but let's be honest, it would be disney buying wb, not the other way around.
Hey, remember back in 2008 when WALL-E showed us a ludicrous world where a single company took over the entire planet and made it hostile to all life as we know it and held humanity hostage for centuries with brain numbing distractions to keep them docile? Crazy, right? That could never happen, certainly not by the 2100s!

So Cartoon Network Studios is being shut down/ merged with the Warner Brothers Animation studios thanks the the discovery merger
Dozens of people were laid off because of it.
The future of the Network is up in the air now. Future shows, future plans, shows that had been ordered may be canceled.
This what capitalism breeds. It does not breed creativity. It breeds greedy practices that rip creativity apart until they can get every last penny stuck in the folds.
I am so devastated for the workers and their families.
I'm so sad for the state of the animation industry right now.
I hope everyone who lost their job is able to find work quickly or find help and support from their loved ones.

Update on HBO/Warner Brothers revenge scheme, latests numbers show $20 million in market losses. Keep it up folks, we are making an impact. Petitions and support for the creators must continue, if we can’t get the shows back, we can at least help creators explore legal avenues.

Scoop: Warner Bros. Discovery (@wbd) in talks to merge with @Paramount — David Zaslav met w Bob Bakish on Tuesday at Paramount HQ to discuss — Zaslav also has spoken to Shari Redstone about a deal — WBD has hired bankers Story on @axios: https://www.axios.com/2023/12/20/warner-bros-paramount-merger-discovery-streaming
Some (possibly) interesting network news. With WBD still holding the SPN IP, anything involving them could have an impact on if/when we ever see a revival.
Sigh. What a mess.
I know these companies will still be making content even if they merge, but something like that could certainly affect a possible reboot. Whether it's for or against? Heck if I know.

Terminally online weirdos do realize that if the proposed WB Discovery and Paramount merger goes through, thousands of people are going to end up losing their jobs, right?
As much as I despise Zaslav and everything he stands for, the world doesn’t need anymore mergers.
But I guess this is just another byproduct of late stage capitalism.
“Why stop at a single Looney Tunes movie when we can just buy the entire WB catalog?!”
This timeline sucks.
