Turnip28
Turnip28 is an indie wargame built around kitbashing models so that they look like the haggard survivors of a thousand years of vegetable-motivated Napoleonic war.
The core rules are free, and (as of 4/2/24) the game is receiving regular support.
Rules-wise, the closest comparison is definitely Warhammer. Models have statistics for Wounds, (in)Accuracy, (non)Toughness, and number of attacks they can make. Solo models (called Snobs) and units (called Followers) are both fielded, and an emphasis is placed on armies being unpredictable, difficult-to-control things that panic and get disorganized and sometimes just don't listen to your orders.
The biggest mechanical divergence is that players take turns activating units, and the process for this involves using a Snob to tell a gang of Followers what to do. Only if there's no Followers nearby to boss around does the Snob act directly.
The tone of the game's writing and setting is definitely black comedy. War is gross, no one involved is particularly competent, the motive for the fight has been completely lost over the years, and one of the narrative's main characters is a pile of fingers that, due to the decent tactical advice it gives, has been scooped into a box to be carried around. There's a genuine toad-in-the-hole recipe included in one of the factions' unit list.
The overall structure and layout of the book will make you say "this is definitely a wargame," but the rules are well-organized and easy to follow and reference. It's at least as professional as anything out of the big presses, and the art is gorgeous, evocative, and creative.
The game's factions, called Cults, are varied and distinct and come with advice on how to play them. Most of them pull from the same pool of generic units, with a few variations and passive effects, but they all do a solid job of transforming the way the game is played.
Despite this, the real star of the game---which I think gets somewhat overshadowed by how much game there is---is still the kitbashing. You can use proxies or models from another game, but Turnip28 really wants to get you into painting and modeling your unique army. You can still have a good time if you just like the mechanics, but you'll have a great time if you click with the modeling.
All told, Turnip28 feels like a gem. It uses a familiar mechanical foundation in order to get a little weird with its setting, and to encourage players to do creative modeling. The end result is a rulebook packed with gorgeous art, which reads cleanly, and which lets you and a buddy crash strange little squads of gremlins into each other for an hour.

Magnagothica: Maleghast is a two to four player skirmish war-game designed for virtual tabletop by Tom Bloom (author of Lancer RPG and others), set in the ancient city of Anzenmezzeron, the great necropolis of a billion corpses, where death is broken.
You are a necromancer, partaker of the Black Sacrament and master of the devouring dead. Fresh from the grave, you set your sights on the terrible treasure at the center of the city: the End of Death. Will you find it within your grasp, or will you lose yourself in the swirling hellscape of the city?

The Temple of Swellings is a Turnip28 cult. It’s conceit is at any time you can choose to toss of The Swelling, a hideous root that bursts out of any weak unit on the table and then proceeds to grow and grow and grow. Any unit nearby runs the risk of getting swallowed up by the thing.
This is my conception of the Swelling. A sort of biblically-accurate angel turnip from hell. WIPs below the fold.

“Violence for violence’s sake is not the rule of beasts but the nature of divinity.” Gubat Banwa is a game of rapid kinetic martial arts, violent sorcery, heartrending convictions and bouts of will. Warriors that channel gods face sorcerers that master black arts, martial artists who have unlocked a new form of cultivation clash swords with those that perfect the night alchemies. When the crocodile’s teeth are cast, convictions are unsheathed, and steel sparks: the Umalagad must declare that: “The river of life ever flows! Rejoice in the glory of combat!” and they enter violence
SWORD AND ENLIGHTENMENT. LOVE AND GLORY. VIOLENCE AND LIBERATION.
Tumblr media
Gubat Banwa is a  Southeast Asian fantasy martial arts Role-Playing Game, inspired by the refulgent cultures of Southeast Asia. Raise your spears, KADUNGGANAN, you elite warrior-braves and asura-knights who travel The Sword Isles to prove their conviction and dictate the fate of the world. Revel in larger-than-life war drama like in Asian Dramas, ballistic tactical martial arts grid gameplay in the vein of Lancer or Final Fantasy Tactics, and find glory beyond heaven. Wield the Thunderbolt of Liberation! Rejoice! In the Glory of Combat!

Included are!
A unique Southeast Asian-inspired Fantasy setting, with an emphasis on martial arts as a background for war drama and violence, from a Philippine-centric view. Garudas fight against unglu. Martial artist warriors master the Principle of Cutting by meditating upon the teachings of the Violent Bodhisattva. Rituals and superstitions must be performed or else risk the wrath of the ancestors. Vast kingdoms arise with God-Kings at their helm, claiming to be Shiva-Buddha incarnate. You and your warband stand at the center of this violent mandala!
A corresponding narrative system made to help play out war drama in this setting, along the veins of Final Fantasy Tactics, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Malazan, Tigana, Game of Thrones, and Tactics Ogre!
Want to try out the Thundering Tactics Battle System that fuses modern narrative sensibilities with D&D4e style tactical combat and wargaming dice pools. The Turn Order is known as the Rhythm, and you don't activate a unit; you fulminate a fighter. The game heavily relies on terrain abilities and emphasizes movement, especially with it's 3-Beat System, which lets you do 3 Actions per turn (some actions might cost more than 1 Beat!)
A Discipline System inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics Jobs, Digital Devil Saga's Mantras, and Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne's Magatama. Mix and match your Techniques! Change Disciplines with a single Downtime Action! Be a Death Dancer that heals with alchemies, or a Tigpana (Spiritual Archer) that rides upon a crocodile!
A narrative system wherein describing or doing dangerous and cool things is encouraged, as that is how you get Thunderbolt Tokens, which let you dictate your fate. This same narrative system prioritizes 5 Approaches instead of Abilities, in the vein of L5R, with each approach based off of the 5 Elements of Gubat Banwa's natural philosophies and esoteric tradition.
Said narrative system comes with a baked in Honor system that interplays with Debt, which is how you get others to do things for you. And NPCs can accrue this same debt, forcing you to follow them. If your Honor ever falls below 0, you must play a new Kadungganan!
An enemy system that allows for Solo and GM-less play! Roll an Enemy's Gambit Dice to find out what actions they do when they Fulminate. Adapt and act accordingly, make for dynamic fights!
Event tables and generators for every possible thing you might encounter while journeying in the Sword Isles, to fully immerse and play in its cultures! As well as Lore to fulfill any questions you might have.
Finally, baked in is the starter adventure: The Sword Devil. So you can jumpstart your games!

Interesting. This recent trend of artists making war games is very much to my liking - in this case by Rifle Infantry, and here is a link to the rules themselves, including two WIP army lists.

Wizards & Warfare, fantasy miniature wargame by Peter Irving of the Leicester Wargames and Model Soldier Society (undated 1st ed, 1976 2nd ed and 1978 3rd ed shown). Earlier printings reference many names from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings -- Ents, Nazgul, Hobbits, Riders of Rohan -- later replaced with more generic terms, similar to early and later versions of Dungeons & Dragons.

So, like many hobbyists, I've been a longtime GW Enjoyer because it's easy to find people to play games with. But, it'd be a shame to ignore so many cool miniatures and systems just because it's harder to get games in. So, the Shame Pile grows... ever so slightly (it's literally 9 character models, Howard Quartz included, a piece of scenery, and Volkhan's anvil)
Warlord's ABC Warriors game drew me in with its chunky, characterful sculpts and low model count. I love a skirmish game. Its compatibility with other games in their 2000 AD licensed range is also a huge plus, so you can play out crossover games with Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog (RIP), and I guess Slaíne too if you really want? I'm really only familiar with Judge Dredd, as tends to happen on this side of the ocean, but this has gotten me interested in exploring more of the 2000 AD strips.
Plus, Andy Chambers and Gav Thorpe designed the system, so as an Oldhammer fan, seeing all my favourite designers of the era popping up in Warlord design credits is delightful.
