Games Workshop does a lot of infuriating shit, and in what is perhaps a manifestation of something like Stockholm Syndrome, I feel strangely...lucky(?) that the Dark Angels' 9th and 10th ed releases have been genuinely cool. A lot of the other ranges have jumped the shark for me--with the exception of Voldus I haven't liked anything they've done with Grey Knights since 3rd ed, the updated Vindicare Assassin is not as good as the old one, I don't especially care for any of the new Imperial Guard models, most Primaris kits look like they're armed with nerf guns designed by nine year olds, and I found the new Dante disappointing--but the Lion El'Jonson model, Azrael's Primaris update, the new Deathwing Knights, and now Primaris Asmodai all look great. The Azrael and Asmodai models actually look better than the ones they're replacing.
Genuinely shocked.

A sampling of miniatures I did in 2020! I know I’ve been inactive on Tumblr for a long time. But I was genuinely surprised to see the continued support I got even when I wasn’t active. I will try to be more active on here this year! Keyword is try!

What’s up with the Gathering Storm and releasing models that are dead ringers for established characters, only to make new characters for them and get rid of the rules for the older characters???
Grand Master Voldus is a Grey Knight in terminator armour with a daemon hammer, storm bolter, psyk-out grenades and an iron halo. So is Grand Master Mordrak, who I believe was introduced in the 5E GK codex. More than than, Mordrak has an interesting backstory - he was the only survivor of a Red Corsairs raid, and later found that the ghosts of his slaughtered comrades would join him in battle and fight to keep him safe, while haunting him in-between battles - only by killing Huron Blackheart would they be at peace. This was represented by the fact that you could give him a unit of Ghost Knights as a bodyguard, who were basically GK terminators who had some interesting rules and limited upgrades. Instead we have your generic Ultramarine-style character Voldus, the greatest psyker seen in the Grey Knights for centuries, appointed to his position by Kaldor Draigo (even though the decision to promote a Grand Master must be unanimous by the other Masters), facing the Red Corsairs on the way to Terra (which would have been perfect for Mordrak, and allowed for him to be killed if you absolutely must introduce Voldus)...
Then you have Yvraine, a fancy Eldar woman who wields what could well be a djinnblade, or at a distance looks like a huskblade. She comes with a razor fan and in general just looks like an amazing model for Malys, down to the haughty poise.
The Visarch makes for a great Eldar Corsair prince, as well.
The last one is a bit of a stretch, but Inquisitor Greyfax only requires a weapon swap and a few interesting xenos-bits added to be a good substitute for old Ordo Xenos inquisitor Valeria.
What the hell were you thinking, GW?

A Beacon of Hope: Voldus Army of One The Grey Knights are some of the holiest of all the Space Marine chapters, they have to be to fight Chaos as much as they do! Yvraine + The Visarch
Yeesh. Dismal anxiety over Jain Zar and Drazhar lead me to look over the statistics of the Aeldari special characters in general and...wow, I forgot how shite most of them are.
I’m honestly disappointed Yvraine’s as pathetic as she is. She’s only as good a Psyker as a generic Librarian. Ouch. She’s also basically worse than a regular Archon in combat since she has fewer attacks and most of the time a worse Invulnerable. It’s really disappointing to me that this major new vessel for the power of a risen deity is literally just so pathetic.
The Visarch isn’t much better but he’s still definitely better in a scap. Actually having a 4++ helps. I’m really frustrated that the Legendary Croneswords do a measly D3 damage though. Yvraine’s Cronesword is barely any different from a regular Huskblade.
The Yncarne at least I can say it’s powerful. I wish it was more definitely just made as strong as Roboute, I feel it should be, but I overall think it’s still okay. What it lacks in being able to match Roboute in straight combat it can compensate for as a Psyker as it can cast both a Smite and Gaze of Ynnead before it even begins it’s attacks letting it on average inflict 2D3 Mortal Wounds. Overall I’d say I’m okay with the Yncarne.
But then we get the likes of Yriel and just...yikes! Seriously what is even Yriel’s point? He is...pathetic. Seriously I don’t think you even need a Captain, a generic Assault Terminator will probably beat him in combat.
Eldrad is fine overall but I am still really pissed off that for some reason he can’t deny as many powers as Voldus or Ahriman can. It’s just so infuriating when the single greatest Aeldari Psyker ever isn’t even given the same base level Psychic ability as two Space Marines.
Still overall this is really sad. Most of the Phoenix Lords will just die to anyone with a 3++ and a D3 weapon. They just don’t have the damage output to kill 3++ in one turn and against a -3 AP D3 weapon they are, barring Asurmen and Fuegan, literally absolutely helpless. Two hits and they are dead. Every time.
It’s just...really depressing.

So with Grandmaster Voldus done that’s the Grey Knight portion of the backlog cleared.
Here is Voldus’ Vanguard. Still a couple of bits to do most obviously the bases but for now onto another section of the backlog!
