Click below to see the drawing. @rixitup @thatsthat24
I wanted to draw some fanart based on @/rixitup ‘s Virgil’s calamity au “what if Roman was cursed instead” scenario. So here’s some cursed Roman angst based on the scenario. The words in the drawing are lyrics from “The Other Side of Paradise” by Glass Animals. I felt like the lyrics matched the drawing theme well. I imagine that this drawing would occur right after the “what if scenario” drawing ended. Roman would quickly go into his bedroom in a panic and look at himself in the mirror there. He’d then claw at the mirror in fear and anger, which is why I drew cracks on the mirror.

Like the last time I drew a shirtless guy, I’m crediting @/aurora_the_frog ‘s art on Instagram as my reference photos for how to draw a shirtless guy. They’ll probably always be my go to reference, so if I draw more shirtless men in the future you can expect @/aurora_the_frog ‘s art to be my reference.

I wrote this in one go when prepping dinner tonight so it's probably rubbish but I thought I'd post before overthinking it because I have probably six other fictions that I'm still overthinking!
Cold Coffee
As parents of four, nearly five rambunctious boys, Jeff and Lucille could be considered experts in the world of parenting. And if there's one lesson that they could pass on, it would be this; that there are no real experts when it comes to parenting.
As an astronaut and pioneer of the world-famous TV-21, Jeff had sat through many interviews quizzing him on every aspect of astrophysics imaginable. Having answered these questions, it seemed almost mandatory, for each interviewer to conclude in a similar fashion:
"How do you balance family life with your work?"
"Five children? Do you have external help?"
"What type of a parent would you say that you are - Authoritarian? Helicopter?"
"Human." Jeff would answer.
The world seemingly had many opinions on the Tracy family. Some believed they had it easy because... money. Others called out in support of the philanthropist saying Jeff had worked hard for everything he had built. A true underdog story - son of a Kansas wheat farmer now voyaging into uncharted space. However, seemingly nobody made the connection that, just like the rest of the world, they did not have it all figured.
"MUM! MUUUM!" Scott's voice wailed like a klaxon as he skidded into the kitchen.
"Yes Scotty?" Lucille answered, seemingly unperturbed. She continued to stack the family's breakfast dishes in the dishwasher as she spoke.
"I...err...I was trying to be helpful and bring you the dishes but...I knocked over the milk." Scott mumbled, twiddling his fingers.
Lucy grabbed a cloth and the kitchen spray.
"That's okay, can you wipe the spillage off the table for me? I'll be in in a moment. There's only a couple more dishes to-"
"It's gone everywhere! It's over the floor too!" Scott flapped, seemingly excited by the household disaster.
"Is it indeed?" Lucy quirked a bemused eyebrow, and made a show of putting her marigold-clad hand on her hip.
Scott nodded enthusiastically.
"Ok, I'll grab the mop."
Lucy was halfway through with filling the bucket when Scott's voice announced the next Tracy-home catastrophe.
"Ooooh noooo!" The voice came from the other room.
"...What is it Scott?" Lucy responded with a small sigh.
"Gordon's been playing in the milk and has walked it everywhere. It's all over his clothes!"
"FAB"
Lucille kneaded her lower back.
"Come on old girl" she grumbled to herself. At thirty-five, she wasn't old, but today somehow felt the age of the entire household combined.
Scooping up her soggy toddler, she sat him atop her rounded stomach and made for the bathroom. Some days she wondered if Gordon purposefully baptised himself in mess just so he had the excuse for another bath, he loved the water so much.
Scott, being the eldest, made a start on mopping the milk footprints from the dining room and hall. A quick calculation and Lucille decided that the least messy option, and one resulting in the fewest brotherly arguments, would be to have Virgil and John entertain themselves not in the direct vicinity of the breakfast mayhem. Virgil had set himself up at the piano and John parked himself in front of the brand new holoprojector. Sanity somewhat restored, she began showering her toddler.
Keeping the bathroom door open, Lucille listened for any new potential calamity but instead heard the gentle melody of silent night start up from the piano. It was February, but Virgil had been so very proud to be asked to perform the piece at his school's Christmas concert that he still associated the piece with the happiness he felt that day. It brought a smile to Lucy's heart too and she let the gentle sound wash over her as she rinsed the last of the soap suds from Gordon.
Another sound overtook Virgil's music. John had tuned into his favourite programme about space and had obviously increased the volume to combat the sound of the piano. The instrument grew louder in retaliation; silent night becoming more of a relatable night as witnessed by the Tracy household - in a nutshell; loud. In defiance, the holoprojector volume raised once more.
"Boys, turn the volume down!" she called, lifting Gordon from the bath, but her voice was drowned out by the dueling decibels.
"BOYS!" She called again, wrapping a towel around the youngest. The baby within her kicked in protest at the din.
Massaging her temples, she made for the living room and turned the holoprojector off.
"Hey!" John protested.
Virgil abruptly ended his aggressive rendition of anything-but-silent night and sat with a face of utter innocence, as though he hadn't been party to the explosive noise.
"John. Virgil. I. Need. Five. Minutes."
She paused, surveying the cluttered lounge.
"God, I could use a coffee right now." She muttered to herself. One month to go she inwardly sighed.
"Let me help dress your brother, then you're both gonna help me tidy all of...this." she gestured vaguely to her jumble sale of a room.
"I think Gordie's gone and dressed himself!" John sniggered.
Lucy turned to find Gordon sporting a pair of flippers, rubber ring, snorkel mask and one of her summer straw hats...and little else.
"Well kinda." Virgil snorted.
Lucy pinched the bridge of her nose and couldn't help but chuckle herself.
"Nice outfit kiddo, but I think we need something on your lower half."
Gordon gestured to his flippers.
"Come on, I'll help you pick something out."
She rifled through the folded laundry basket that was yet to make the journey upstairs and produced a more suitable outfit for the day.
Moments after she had finished dressing Gordon, Scott reappeared.
"Erm...mum?" he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
Lucy turned to face him with a I-am-desperately- trying-to-be-a-good-parent smile.
"Yes...Scotty?"
"Well, you know you asked me to get the paddling pool out for Gordon?"
"No, when on earth did I say that? I've been bathing your brother."
"Oh… When you were talking with John n Virg, Gordie said you asked if I would get the paddling pool out for him."
Lucille turned to face the smallest mischief maker only to find him hiding behind Virgil.
"Anyway..." Scott continued.
"I accidentally dropped the house key when trying to carry everything." he mumbled.
"I needed it to open the back door and it err...it went down a gap in the decking in the back garden."
"O-kay" Lucy inhaled slowly. Summoning both her physical and mental strength. She followed her eldest to the decking.
"Can you show me where you dropped the key?"
"I'm...not too sure."
"The paddling pool is so big and I couldn't see where the key went exactly."
"Ok, well where were you standing?"
"I... can't remember."
Lucy muttered a word under her breath that she would later reason to her son's teacher that he must have learnt from his school peers.
"I need to take the decking up."
"Can't we just leave it until dad's home? He said he'd be back at lunch today, so anytime now really." Scott reasoned.
"That's the kicker. Dad gave his set of keys to Grandma when we went away. He was relying on us to let him in today."
As if on cue, there was a rap on the door."
Virgil opened the letter box and looked through.
"It's dad!" He called excitedly.
Lucy used the wall to ease herself down and peered through the letterbox.
"We have a situation... The keys fell through the decking in the back. Both the back gate and front door are locked."
"Ah. Maybe a master key wasn't the best idea. No worries. We'll get it back." His eyes smiled.
"I'm gonna try n take the decking up." Lucy announced.
"No. Wait… I have a plan. Make sure nobody is standing by the back gate, ok?" Jeff's profile disappeared from the small window of vision.
"What's the plan? Jeff? Jeff?" she made a guttural sound in the back of her throat then headed back out to the garden.
"Is everyone out of the way?"
"Yes-"
"-Good!"
There was a loud thud against the back gate.
"Oww."
"That was your plan? To try to kick the gate down?" Lucy deadpanned.
"In fairness, those are some mighty good hinges."
Lucy chuckled.
"Hold on..."
There was a scraping sound, followed by some clambering, then Jeff appeared at the top of the fence. Swinging himself over the top, he landed with as much finesse as any comic book superhero ever had.
He straightened and gave Lucy a devilishly smug smile.
"Hi" he said, kissing her on the cheek.
"Hi" she replied, stress melting away almost tangibly.
"So...decking" he said, rolling up the sleeves of his white linen shirt. It was warm and he unbuttoned the top of his shirt.
"I can do it." Lucy said. She wasn't exactly sure why. Maybe, she felt that she wanted to prove herself capable, having felt like she had failed with the boys this morning. Her life was infinitely different from when Jeff and her had studied astrophysics together. She felt the urge to feel good at something again.
"Don't be daft!" Jeff scoffed, nodding towards her eight-months-pregnant form.
"I'm capable." Lucy retorted stubbornly.
Jeff cupped her hands and kissed them.
"I know you are, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should have to. I want to show our boys that asking for help is not weakness, it's a strength." His smile was genuine and warm.
"Mum?" Lucy turned and found all four boys beaming up at her.
"We just wanted to say we love you, so we made you the coffee you wanted and got you some flowers." Scott said, brandishing a bunch of flowers that had been growing in the garden less than half an hour before.
Jeff squeezed her shoulder.
"And sorry about the keys." The eldest boy added.
Lucy pulled Scott in for a hug.
"It's ok Scotty. You were just trying to help. I love you."
Virgil stepped forward, mug in hand.
"I know we're not supposed to use the kettle when you're not there so we used the tap instead." Virgil said, presenting her with a greyish milky concoction with coffee granules floating at the top.
"You said you'd like some coffee."
"Thank you sweetheart." She beamed, accepting simultaneously the best and worst coffee she ever had.
"I'm so lucky to have you boys."
She silently handed the cup over to Jeff and pulled all the boys into a hug.
"Still wanting to pull that decking up yourself?" Jeff quizzed.
"No." Lucy smiled, wiping away happy tears.
"Good."
"So...boys! Who wants to learn how an impact driver works?" Jeff called, returning the mug to his wife.
Lucy watched happily as the boys all chorused and ran to join their father, working together to find the missing key. Absent-mindedly, she took a sip from her mug and blanched.

Chapter 4.
- Good evening, Aspenville! Today is November 9th 1960, I am your host - Alistair Mayers, and welcome to today’s audition!
Another week had passed - I assumed this schedule to become a norm from now on - and Alistair seemed to have taken a more professional approach to his program since he began his work with Virgil Montgomery. I wasn’t sure whether I prefer it over the less organized and more spontaneous feel of the past auditions, but knew that there’s nothing I can do but accept it. I could just assume his reasoning behind this sudden change.
- The weather today appears slightly more foggy than the last time we spoke, yet the sky is still a lot clearer than would be expected from our lovely town - the host went on - The wind also seems to be more present lately, which I personally do not mind; cold weather always helps me think. Speaking of which, I’ve been thinking a lot the past few days. I’m doing my best to stay focused on my work no matter what. Now that I have a great scientist helping me out I cannot allow myself any distractions. I can’t risk slowing us down, after all we’re talking about the survival of the human race. Dr. Montgomery says that we’re the only ones who can save the world, only ones not ignorant enough to to forget how many human lives are at stake, not blind enough not to see the massacre happening around us and not cowardly enough to do nothing about it. He says that the two of us are superior to all of those who decided to give up already. I know that he says it purely to motivate me, in case I did decide that what we’re doing is pointless, yet I have to admit, his view on the role we’re playing in all of this is rather terrifying to me. I never viewed my actions as a matter of being exceptional as opposed to simply trying to help people out and make the best out of our current situation. I never viewed myself as a god or anything alike, and I never wanted to do so. The idea of taking control over other people’s fate deeply disturbs me. I just don’t want any more innocent people to die.
This short monologue of Alistair’s was enough to reassure me in one of my earlier judgments - I do not like Virgil Montgomery one bit. As much as I respected his dedication to his work, the motivation behind it seemed entirely wrong to me. I trusted Alistair, because I saw how pure his intentions are. Every radio audition, all the effort he had put into this project, his seemingly undying hope and the ever-present optimism. It might not have been a long time since the calamity started and Alistair’s will power is yet to be put to a test, however most of us never even considered fighting, he was right about that. Alistair did fight. Not out of the selfish desire to survive of simple fear, but out of love for the people. And then… then there was Virgil. I could empathize with his desire for his work to be understood and recognized. It was likely wrong of me to judge his actions and mindset without knowing the background behind them, and yet I found it incredibly difficult to trust a person who puts himself before all else. Could Alistair be in the wrong for trusting him?
- I may not fully agree with Dr. Montgomery’s worldview, but nonetheless I do have the utmost respect for him and his work. I find it admirable that even at times when most scientists have already given up, quietly avoiding any mentions of the problem and hoping for it to simply fix itself, he decided to stick to what he believed was right and get to the bottom of it at all costs. It might be foolish of me to think so, but I sincerely believe that there must be more to his motif than simply wanting to play god. I don’t know whether he loves this town and its people the same way that I do, I can’t assume how pure his intentions really are, however what I do know for sure is that he is already doing more good for our current situation than most would ever bother to. Even if his reasons may not be the most noble, his actions are, and that is why I’m not going to give up on working with him any time soon. We have a common goal and our differing worldviews shouldn’t be getting in our way to achieving it.
After all the terrible things he saw and experienced lately, after all the trauma he’d been through, his soft and even temperament felt odd or even bizarre. I find it nearly intriguing how despite how horribly this world may seem he never fails to see the good in it; to see the good in its people. Where most would see a stranger Alistair sees a potential ally, what may seem like danger to others to him looks like an opportunity. His pure and innocent naivety likely comes from a place of fear and yet paradoxically it might end up putting him in more danger than if he simply kept to himself.
- Oh listeners, what am I even doing? - Alistair interrupted my ruminations with a noticeable shift in the tone of his voice - This broadcast had been going on for so long and I haven’t even touched on what I was actually about to share with you. Silly me, just rambling and rambling without mentioning anything of any actual meaning - I wouldn’t consider his previous words meaningless - As for our research, Dr. Montgomery is currently working on some major discovery in regards to Strangers’ DNA and potential origin. Unfortunately, I cannot share with you any more details of it since I haven’t been made aware of them quite yet. Dr. Montgomery says that he doesn’t want to confuse me and have me disturbing his work, and as much as I understand the reasoning behind this decision, shouldn’t it be considered a contradiction to the transparency rule we agreed on? Well, it doesn’t matter either way. After all, I’m here to spread his research to the wider public, not to question his methods. From what I am allowed to share with you, we were to observe some recent weather anomalies, if you can even call them that. The two of us decided to have a closer look into it, because of the late absence of fog around Aspenville, as well as a means to collect some data for the potential verification of the sunflowers theory (which I’m still not in favour of). He asked me to plant the seeds of two different kinds of flowers which both aren’t currently in season. I chose narcissus and white lily as our test subject, since they were the only ones I could find around the station. After several days of observation nothing had happened to the white lily, just as expected. The narcissus however, much to my surprise, actually began to grow!
We still don’t understand the reason for this development and we’re still trying to figure out its potential connection to Strangers and the sunflower theory. In the meantime, I will be checking on both flowers and reporting every change I notice to Dr. Montgomery. After all, we still need a significant amount of time for the flowers to bloom. No matter how much we desire to see the development, we have no means of shortening the waiting time. Even if the suspense and uncertainty feels draining, we have no choice, but to stay patient and hope for the best outcome. And with that thought, I think we should call it a day. A lot has been going on lately and I understand the overwhelming nature of the late events, however please keep in mind that losing hope is the worst we can do right now. Until next, listeners!
And all of a sudden the day turned into night.

Sweetapple (Part Two)
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2
Still @flyboytracy ‘s fault. ::hugs you silly::
Many thanks to @onereyofstarlight for reading and Kiwi-fying and to @katblu42 for also reading and joining in the crazy. ::hugs you to bits::
A bit of exposition in this one, please bear with me. I hope you enjoy.
-o-o-o-
“So what do you think?”
Scott strode across the room, back to his desk. “I think you need to go back to the Island and get some rack time.”
Virgil glowered at him. “You first.” A breath. “But seriously, what do you think?”
“I would have thought what you and Brains think would be more important than my opinion.”
“Scott, it should work. Alex has done all the hard work on theoretical testing. It’s my vote that we go to prototype and get this project off the ground.” Virgil shifted his feet. “You know Gordon would love this.”
Scott dropped his hands onto his desk and leant over the hardwood top. “Yeah, he would.”
The thought that it wouldn’t bring back the people who had died three weeks ago due to yet another underwater habitat collapse remained unspoken.
But it hovered in the room.
Gordon had been devastated after that rescue. If rescue was what you could call body recovery.
This might stop it from happening again. Not all rescues were response. The best were prevention in the first place.
“Has Kayo done background on Sweetapple yet?”
“Yes. She didn’t find anything. Born here in Aotearoa, Dutch descent, single, um…” Virgil poked at his watch and a hologram appeared above it. “Lives here in Auckland – One Tree Hill. Bachelor of Engineering at the University of Auckland.” His eyes scanned what appeared to be a mass of information. Typical Kayo. “Worst I can see is he played MacBeth one year in his high school drama class.”
Scott frowned at his brother. “What has that got to do with anything?”
“Shakespeare’s MacBeth is a total fabrication. False history.”
“So?”
Virgil rolled his eyes. “Alex has a cleaner record than you.”
Scott grunted. “So, you recommend sending him to R&D at Māhia.”
“I do.”
He straightened. “Fine. Set it in motion. Usual travel stipend. Basic security clearance.”
“Basic?” Virgil was frowning at him.
“He’s only worked here two months. Actually working with him will uncover more than any background check. Spend a little time before we share the family arsenal.”
Virgil shrugged. “FAB.”
As if speaking the word called upon the fates, both their watches went off at the same time.
John’s voice as calm as always. “Thunderbirds, we have a situation.”
Scott sighed. One coffee wasn’t really enough.
-o-o-o-
“So, how’d it go?”
Erica’s chewing gum smile was enough for Alex to finally drop his computer to the floor. Apparently, it was a law of physics. It had been attracted to the floor all day.
At least now it was post-possibly-career-ending-calamity.
“Easy there, Tiger. Relax before you break something.”
As usual, Erica was far too laid back for his comfort. “You frightened me.”
“What? Little old me?” Her pink-streaked pig tails bounced as she dramatically clutched her chest. “How could I?”
Alex ignored her and picked his computer off the floor. It’s shock-proof case had paid for itself so many times. “Easily, unfortunately.” He put the computer down carefully, yanked out his chair and collapsed into it.
Every muscle melted.
“That good, huh?”
Alex stared at the space mobile spinning gently in the ducted air. “I think this project would gain more success if it didn’t have me leading it. You should do it.”
As if to prove to him how bad an idea that was, she blew a pink gum bubble, popped it with one finger before sucking it back in and chewing on it some more. “Oh, I don’t think so. Besides, it’s your baby. I’m only your assistant.”
“Bullshit, Erry, you are my partner on this. Without you, it would never have made it this far.”
“Eh, I think you need to rethink your self-esteem. Or maybe get an esteem transplant or something. You’ve got this.” She threw a stylus on her desk and lent forward. “And I need the goss.”
Alex sighed. He had expected this. “Yes, he truly is as gorgeous as you think he is. Yes, the dimples appear real, though I doubt we could prove that without a medical scanner.” A frown as his brain provided a scene where they had to grab Scott Tracy and scan him – hmm.
His thoughts were interrupted by a roar. A glance out the window and he caught the very edge of a rocket powered tail fin before it vanished off into the distance.
Wow.
“Does that happen often?”
Erica leant back in her seat not perturbed in the slightest. “Every now and then. Mr Tracy doesn’t usually make house calls.”
“What?” Alex turned to face her.
She stared at him. “You know he was here to specifically check you out? You said yourself that IR was deployed late last night to Japan, didn’t you?” She grabbed the remote and lit up the big screen in the corner. A flick of her wrist and last night’s tremor and almost-skyscaper-collapse came up on screen. “Three am, our time, they left. My bet is that man should have been in bed, not approving engineering projects.” She threw down the remote in disgust.
“Well, that explained the coffee.”
“Coffee?”
“Yeah, his PA had coffee for him and he looked like he needed it. Hell, I needed it.”
“Yeah, well, you live the life of the obsessed. Sleep is optional.”
“Hey, today was important to me.”
“I know. But you should be looking after yourself better.”
“We’ve only known each other for two months.” Seemed like years, though. Erica had latched onto him the moment he arrived and he was ever grateful.
“I knew you needed help the moment I saw you. We here at Tracy Industries save people.” She smiled.
He knew she meant it as a joke, but it was a scary reality. He had fled his previous job at Oxy-Baker due to their confining work environment. If he was going to admit it, even that decision had been based on International Rescue. The trainwreck that had been that atmospheric scrubber and the realisation that the whole scenario could have resulted in Scott Tracy’s death…
The media had been scathing.
So, he’d left that organisation, his conscience not able to support contributing to that mess any longer.
It was kind of ironic that three weeks later Tracy Industries itself had eaten the business alive and the upper echelons had been career obliterated by the Tracys.
Word had it that new atmospheric scrubbers were in development. All the engineering circles online were awash with the possibilities. Even V.T. Green was enthusiastic.
That hadn’t helped Alex at the time, but he was glad it had happened.
One bonus of working with that lot was that it had given him the inspiration for Siliwrap. Not that the business had listened.
His life was so different now. His application to Tracy Industries Product Design department had been out of desperation. Perhaps Erica was right. His self-esteem needed a boost of some kind. He had never thought he had the remotest of chances.
Yet here he was. Well paid, enough to get himself out of that awful flat up north, full of other people’s crap, and into his own apartment in the frankly amazing One Tree Hill. The list of blessings that had happened in the last few months were longer than his arm.
Perhaps he was in some kind of good luck shock.
“I need coffee.”
Erica rolled her eyes. “You know where to find it.” But then she peered at him, her eyes squinting. “You should take the rest of the day off.”
He paused climbing to his feet. “Bugger that. If you think I’m about to pull a sickie just because I’m tired, you’re out of your mind. I have work I can do. There is no way I’m taking advantage of the Tracys when they’ve given me an opportunity like this.”
She stared at him a moment before pulling the stylus out from behind her right ear. “You’re an idiot.” She turned back to the report she was working on. “We work flexi-time for a damn good reason.”
A grunt and Alex threw himself to his feet. “Getting coffee. Want some?”
She shook her head and waved him off, focussing on the document she was typing.
Okay, so he was having trouble adjusting to the new work environment.
Oxy-Baker had been so different. They had had to clock in and out and every second of their time was counted and accounted for. He hadn’t realised how oppressive it was. In fact, he had thought that was just how everything worked.
But not here. The entire design team had flexi-time in recognition of the fact design and engineering were as much arts as any art on the creative spectrum and needed time. They were trusted. So much trust came down from on high that they would do right by the company, the team felt they couldn’t do anything but do right.
Sure, there was the occasional lunch that went on for too long, but in general the team gave as much as was given to them. If a design was bugging an individual engineer, they could work the midnight run if they wanted and be compensated by moving hours to make up for the lack of sleep.
It created a relaxed atmosphere and Alex, fanboy as he knew he was, couldn’t help but want to give more.
The office spaces reflected the ease and the allowed personality of the team. Computer stations had toys sitting on them from Star Wars to the almost mandatory Thunderbird vehicle.
No one here hesitated to flash their colours.
At the end of the hall a huge painting was hung on the wall. When he had asked Erica about it, she claimed one of the Tracy brothers themselves had painted it. Sure enough, he had made out the signature in the darkness at the bottom of the work eventually. The word ‘Tracy’ was barely legible.
The painting itself was titled ‘Hope’ and was a hand reaching out of that darkness into a glowing light as another hand reached down from the top of the painting stretching to grab a hold. It was bloody inspirational and said everything the Tracys were about.
God, he was a hopeless fanboy.
He thought about his meeting earlier. How did Scott Tracy exist. The man had been in a pressed suit mere hours after digging a hundred or so people out from under a building.
Frickin’ heroes.
Like everything at Tracy Industries, the staffroom was a good one with all the appliances anyone could ever need. It had several couches, for goodness’ sake. A large mobile of Thunderbirds hung from the ceiling in the centre of the room like some slowly spinning chandelier.
He was living a bloody dream.
Like a zombie, he grabbed the coffee jug that was on almost permanent brew and poured himself a shot. Milk and sweetener and syrup…he really needed the syrup.
Moments and he had warmth pouring down his throat.
Bliss.
A frown. Tracy Industries coffee was good. That was another perk he adored about this job, but despite its wonderfulness, this coffee had been outshone by that takeaway coffee he’d nabbed off Mr Tracy’s PA this morning.
He took another blissful swallow. Yes, delicious, but…
Maybe he should tackle the challenge once he’d had more sleep.
He buried his face in his cup.
-o-o-o-
It took weeks.
In that time, International Rescue saved people from all over the planet. It was standard in this office to keep tabs on the family’s activities. Thunderbird Two was called out to a gas leak in the desert at one point. Thunderbird Four did a rescue on the Supreme Barrier Reef. At the beginning of the year, a new bunch of assholes calling themselves the Chaos Crew had been screwing with everything.
Some people said that they were direct opposition to International Rescue, and if International Rescue were removed from the equation, there would be less catastrophes for them to tackle.
Alex had words for those people and they weren’t for polite company.
The words he used for the Chaos Crew were downright black and nasty.
But all he could do in his position was do his job, watch and hope. The design team he was part of, including Erica, had erected a dartboard in one corner of the office. They lack faces for the people they wanted to throw darts at, so the board had been painted purple.
Purple as a colour took a major hit in the popularity stakes in Tracy Tower.
Despite all this, perhaps because of it, Alex pursued the Phantom Coffee.
Because it was a phantom coffee. It did not seem to exist.
He had methodically hunted through every staffroom in the building. Admittedly, he may have used a microdot of that flexi-time to wander the halls.
He hadn’t been game enough to head back to Scott Tracy’s office yet, but he was getting close.
Every shop. EVERY shop within walking distance of Tracy Tower was investigated.
Alex was an engineer and slightly on the obsessive side. Okay, perhaps more than slightly, but that coffee so kindly handed to him by Mr Tracy’s PA was worth it.
If he could find it.
But the hunt proved futile and eventually he had to admit that he was going to have to put his brave face on and go and ask the man.
He still hadn’t heard about Siliwrap and he was pretty sure it was going to be a fail and he should prepare to face facts that it just wasn’t good enough. But the Tracys were busy. That much was obvious. Why would they have time to make a decision?
Scott Tracy had visited in person for a reason.
His brain gnawed at his soul.
So the coffee was likely a distraction.
Whatever worked.
Except he couldn’t locate it.
So, here he was, riding the elevator to Mr Tracy’s office hoping to meet with his PA and discuss COFFEE.
God, he was an idiot.
The doors opened and he was struck with the last time he had been here. The door with the Tracy Industries logo on it was still there.
What? Did you expect it to explode and vanish or something?
The desk was still there. The air of minimalist luxury still hung in the air.
But there was no sign of Mr Tracy’s PA. Instead a young woman sat at the desk the man had leant on. Dressed primly in a spotless suit, she looked over at him. “Can I help you?”
“Uh.” God, he was stupid. “Have you seen Mr Tracy’s PA?”
She frowned at him. “I’m Mr Tracy’s PA. Can I help you?”
What?
Oh, shit. “Um, I was up here a few weeks back and, uh, Mr Tracy…” God, asking about coffee was so lame. “I have a project awaiting…” Judgement. “…approval.”
She smiled just a little. “Mr Tracy has been busy of late. Which project did you need information on?”
“Siliwrap.” The name was so stupid!
“Oh, Siliwrap.” She smiled even more as she prodded her computer. “That is currently with the Head of Research and Development.” She appeared a little awkward all of a sudden. “Yes, he has been busy, as well. I will send him a reminder.”
Head of R&D? He hadn’t met Virgil Tracy yet.
He held up his hands. “No, no, that’s fine. It can wait.” Bloody Thunderbird Two!
She smiled gently. “I promise, he won’t mind. In fact, I think he would prefer the reminder. I’ll speak to Luc, his PA, and we’ll see if we can get an answer.” She paused a moment. “You’re new here?”
A single aghast nod.
She stood up from the desk and walked around to greet him, offering him her hand. “Hi, I’m Carly, Scott Tracy’s PA. Welcome to Tracy Industries.”
He shook her hand and considered dying on the spot.

A through Z (minus the ones you've already answered)
A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
My favourite ship at the moment is FengQing (Feng Xin X Mu Qing from TGCF) and I am constantly talking @astrowaffles 's ear off about them. Platonically, I'm always mentally ill about the Shiratorizawa team and how they all support each other. Family-wise, I can't get Shen Twin aus out of my head
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Yaku and Suga from Haikyuu, both platonic and romantic :) I think either way would be really sweet and funny
C - A ship you have never liked and probably never will.
Shiragoshi. I see no appeal in it for either of them and it kinda just gives me the ick
D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.
Anything with Karasuno first years that aren't the stereotypical main ships except maybe Yamahina. Idk I just feel like Tsuki x either of the volleyball idiots would go terribly and someone would end up getting hurt.
Also, Yachi is very much a lesbian to me and I'm taking that to the grave 🫡
Also, kawagata doesn't click with me. I prefer reongata, since they're both third years and at least had dialogue with each other
For a non Haikyuu pairing, I've got to say giyushino or shinogiyu - I don't know if it's hinted canon or just widely popular but I really can't care for it. I don't hate it, I just have no interest
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
I haven't altered the fandom with it but I made #RichPrinceFuckerVirgil a trend with my friends back in 2019
G - Have you ever had an OTP? If so, do you remember your first one? Who was in it?
The timeline gets a bit confuddled here but my first otp was either prinxiety (Roman X Virgil from Sanders Sides) or klance (Keith X Lance from VLD)
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
I scoped out the Skulduggery Pleasant fandom and I'm not planning on going back (which sucks because the books are amazing)
K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
Either Zuko, Tsukki, Mu Qing, or Ming Fan (can you tell I'm a fan of grouchy people with the ability to do good?)
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
As someone very neutral over Asahi, I really have to say that he is portrayed as the ace amazingly. Even though he isn't the main character and can't score all the epic points, he's still an inherently powerful force and you always trust in him when the ball goes his way, as this viewer.
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
Feng Xin :)
N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
Reincarnation fics (TGCF)
Multi-chap AU fics (Haikyuu)
ObaMitsu content (KNY)
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
The song "Black Sheep" by Gin Wigmore reminds me of Hua Cheng/TGCF calamities :))
P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Sendai Frogs as a forced together bounty hunting crew in a space au that becomes found family 💪
Q - A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
DSMP/MCYT - after Technoblade sadly passed away and then the finale was handled so clumsily, I just couldn't bother with it anymore. However, I still watch a lot of those YouTubers today, like Tommyinnit and Jack Manifold :)
R - Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
Shiratorizawa Third Years for the win!!!!
@/baguantte has an AMAZING piece of fanart for all of them which I regularly return to look at :))
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)
Shen Yuan was chronically ill before he transmigrated and he died not just due to choking but because a seizure happened during his rage-eating. We know he's an unreliable narrator, hence why he never mentions this - he hated being ill and felt ashamed by it, so he never wants to think about it now he's no longer sick.
A prompt for this could be Shen Qingqui gets wife plotted and the consequence is far too similar to how he lived his old life that he keeps nearly breaking over it. Could lead to an identity reveal or just some good ol' hurt/comfort
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
Yamagata has clinical depression. Idrk where this came from but it's something I very much stand by and have lots of interlocking ideas with so, yeah, no one is changing my mind on that.
U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
Mu Qing (TGCF/Heaven Official's Blessing) - he's my favourite because of his complicated character. He says negative things, the rumours about him is how he is cold and unkind, yet we see his actions and behaviour portrayed very differently. He's a truly complicated guy.
Goshiki Tsutomu (Haikyuu) - I've written an essay on him which I now cannot find??? I'll have to fish it out but basically he's a really well written character whom performs so hard despite the anxiety he's visibly under being in such an infamous team
Shen Yuan (SVSSS/Scum Villain's Self Saving System) - he's a nerd who died and is now a hot guy but has the nerve to complain about it, he's just like me and I love that.
V - Which character do you relate to the most?
It sounds dramatic and emo as fuck, but Mu Qing. I just get him on a very deep level.
W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
Major Character Death or just Character Death in general - I always find it very cheap or unfulfilling. To get me on board with Major Character Death takes a LOT
X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
The Girlboss X Malewife ship - I don't mind the genders, I don't care for dynamics... if that ship is in there, it's likely to be my favourite!! See FengQing and KyouHaba for reference lol
Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you arent in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Bnha, Bungo Stray Dogs and a bit of Mob Psycho
Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)
AHHHHH OKAY UHHH I accidentally got my mother into not just Haikyuu and Demon Slayer but also TGCF?? We've been watching The Untamed together too - she really wants me to read her manga series Boys Over Flowers and I've been meaning to haha

Chapter 3.
I haven’t heard from Alistair for the past week. Despite that, I still have been checking the radio everyday since the last broadcast, in hopes of hearing his voice. I did so partly out of boredom, and partly because I’ve begun to worry about his well being. It wasn’t my conscious attempt at caring about him; after all, he’s nothing more than some kid I've never even seen in my whole life. Yet, the warm “Hello, Aspenville!”, I heard this evening, came as a relief.
- I feel like I owe you an apology for my absence. - said the boy on the other side of the radio - The past week didn’t offer us any new information worth sharing with you, therefore I saw no point in even starting an audition. If I’m being honest, I began to question the very point of what I’m doing.
Alistair seems to still take himself way too seriously. This poor boy is too blinded by his own hopes and delusions to see that what he’s doing is nothing more than playing a game. He seems to believe that the faith of Aspenville lies in his hands. Do you really think you can save the world, Alistair?
Or perhaps I’m actually the one in the wrong…
- Luckily - the boy continued - I’m not coming to you empty handed today. What I managed to accomplish, in the past couple of days, may not be a lot, and I can’t blame you if you find it rather underwhelming, but I’m proud to say that it surely gives us hope for the future. Let me tell you about everything that happened lately:
I’ve spent the past week searching for answers. Day and night, I’ve been focused on one thing and one thing only - the truth. It wasn’t an easy search. I managed to find my dad’s phone book, containing the full list of numbers belonging to his former researchers. I have to admit, looking through my dad’s belongings after the late events wasn’t a pleasant experience. I try not to think about my parents. Looking back and getting stuck in the past would bring no good to my research, in fact, it would slow it down. After all, I’ve been told multiple times to always value reason over emotions.
I made multiple calls over the past week. Both to the research centre and the individual researchers themselves. It didn't take me too much time to realize that contacting the right people isn’t nearly as difficult as getting them to actually hear me out. Most of them dismissed my calls right away, the few who didn’t thought I’m crazy and hung up after realizing that they’re talking to a 17 year old. Perhaps I was crazy. Perhaps I still am. Perhaps me trying to find a way out of our current situation is actually a sign of pure insanity. None of that mattered to me. As long as I can help someone with my actions, I couldn’t care less.
Being viewed as a particularly immature teenager, who has too much time on his hands, by the very people who I considered to be my only hope wasn’t helpful. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I smiled purely for the sake of not raising concerns, and for that matter, I couldn’t even cry. Just laugh; laugh at the absurdity of this all. The world is absurd, the calamity (the public named it that, I never liked this term) and for all of it, my research is absurd. I questioned everything. I doubted myself. I became paranoid and then so very tired. And then a miracle happened. When I reached my lowest, I found what I was searching for. I finally found the truth - a young researcher by the name of Virgil Montgomery.
- I would love to eventually get Dr. Montgomery to talk with me on this program, however, from what I’ve noticed, he’s a rather shy person, and I don’t want to put pressure on him - Alistair continued - For now, I’m going to share with you the details of our research via radio, and we’ll see what future brings us.
He sounded ecstatic, I could just imagine how much all of this meant to him. After all, despite all the difficulties he had encountered, he managed to find someone just as passionate as him. Or perhaps just as insane. I’ve begun to question whether his research was actually child’s play, as I initially thought.
- Oh listeners - the enthusiastic voice spoke again - you have no idea how wonderful it feels! To finally have someone listen to what you have to say… I used to believe that credibility isn’t for me. Not right now, at least. I used to think that you gain a voice once you enter adulthood. Before that you can listen to what the elders have to say and obey them quietly. You may question what they say, but you’ll never be able to voice your concerns. It’s just like trying to scream under the water - no one can hear you. Since drowning is silent, without a solid voice to take a lead, this entire town is doomed to go down, and then - maybe the entire world. If Virgil Montgomery is the brain willing to help humanity overcome this crisis, I want to be the voice giving him a means to do so. As far as I know, he also knows how terrible it feels to be looked down on and ignored because of age or an uncommon approach to the problem. Well, it’s all in the past now. Isn’t it beautiful how both of us can help each other in helping the world?
I understood where Alistair’s excitement came from. Having an authority figure listen to what you have to say may feel like a blessing at his age. However something about all of this felt rather bittersweet.
Prioritizing his research, no matter how important wouldn’t it be to him, over his own emotional well being is something I can never consider admirable. Avoiding what brings him anguish, instead of trying to cope with it, seems like a rather foolish choice, one that might end in tragedy at that.
- I can’t say that I agree with every idea proposed by Dr. Montgomery - Alistair continued - in fact, we tend to disagree on quite a lot of matters. For example, Dr. Montgomery is very much in favour of the sunflowers theory, the one claiming that Strangers tend to be drawn to sunflowers, which I’m very much against. He claims that based on our current research this is the most logical explanation, however something about it just doesn’t sit right with me. I can’t even say why, it just feels terribly wrong…
Alistair seemed to get rather upset whenever the topic of sunflowers was brought up. It wasn’t difficult to understand why. With how much meaning those flowers held in his life, it was reasonable for him to get upset whenever his view of them as a symbol of joy and childlike hope was challenged. If he wants to actually contribute to finding a scientific explanation of the current situation, he would eventually have to let go of this nostalgia. I think it’s clear to see that Alistair tries to approach every problem with sheer cold logic, the same way as the people he admired growing up did, however he tends to get lost in his emotions while doing so. There’s nothing shameful about being a sensitive person, yet in his position this dissonance should be considered a fatal character flaw.
- During our last talk Dr. Montgomery mentioned working on some big theory, something that might possibly entirely change our perception of this situation. I don’t know about you, listeners, but I’m very excited to hear what he had been up to. I’ll make sure to keep you updated with every new information I receive. Both of us share the belief that in order for this program to be a trustworthy source of information we can’t hide anything from its audience, therefore I’m going to be absolutely transparent about our research.
I’ve noticed the sun beginning to set, and at that moment it occurred to me that I don’t actually want the broadcast to end. I missed Alistair’s voice and I didn’t want to wait another week to hear from him again; especially considering that the news he’ll have to deliver likely won’t be of pleasant nature.
- On a different note, I decided to work on making the radio station’s atmosphere more welcoming, since it doesn’t seem like we’ll be leaving it anytime soon. The small garden in the building’s backyard looks nothing like the one from my childhood; aside from a few sunflowers here and there - which as you already know are nothing uncommon around this area - it feels rather empty and neglected. I want to change it. Not only would it help to make this place feel more like home to both Neil and myself, gardening would aid me to occasionally focus on something else than our current situation. Who knows, perhaps I’ll even be able to harvest some fruit and vegetables as a food supply. This morning I found a package of narcissus seeds while looking around the station building. Since it’s early November, they most likely wouldn’t bloom if I planted them now, but I’ll make sure to do so as soon as their season starts. I was never a huge fan of those flowers, however now I think I’m beginning to like them.
Hearing Alistair get excited about flowers right after discussing his research on beings possibly serving as a threat to humanity, felt oddly innocent; almost in an unsettling way.
- Anyway - he went on - I feel like I’ve begun to ramble again. Goodnight, listeners, hopefully we’ll get to hear from each other again soon enough!
Sleep well, Alistair.

I have seen the future......
   "I have seen the future:
Sci-Fi = “science fiction". I now know that almost everything that was previously labeled "sci-fi" isn't fiction any longer.
When I was a kid I watched "Thunderbirds", a TV sci-fi puppet show. Thunderbird 2,  piloted by Virgil Tracy could land vertically.
Nasa, the world’s leading Space agency never managed to achieve that. Elon Musk's Spacex however has succeeded where Nasa failed, namely, to invent a reusable rocket that lands vertically instead of disintegrating as it plunged back to earth.
Video phones were first displayed in the sci-fi film, “Metropolis” which was made in 1927! and today’s average smart phone has more than 1 million times more memory that the Apollo 11 computer had.
The baby boomer generation can remember many of the extraordinary scientific advances of the past 80+ years. I doubt that Millennials (1981-96), Gen Z (1996-2012) could imagine life without the internet and Gen Alpha (2013-25) would “die” if deprived of social media. But we are all in the dark as to how AI will impact our lives.
During my recent visit to London I went to see, "Crazy for You”, a pre-computer, 1930's Zigfeld follies /Gershwin musical that embraced many of  the traditional features of entertainment that represented life in the early 20th Century and before. By contrast, the Abba concert I saw last week, could not be more different, for although fabulously entertaining is the ultimate in "fake news".
I travelled almost 90 mins to "see" 2 female singers and 2 male musicians on stage except they were not there!, what the audience of 3000, gyrated and danced to were 4 holograms! This was "ABBA-Voyage", the world of things to come.
Today, zoom calls, fake news, holograms and A1 are producing visions, "facts" and events that we cannot trust because more often than not they are not actual or factual. We can no longer trust what we see or hear. The different worlds of analog to digital, the past viz. the future, the real viz fake are taking us all into a new world of the unknown.
Last week,  a news feed posted an image of Mike Pence wearing a rainbow LBGT shirt over a white suit that went viral; it’s was quickly discovered to be a fake but not until millions had seen it and no doubt many of those who did were convinced that Pence was supporting that movement. Nothing could be further from the truth.
So how are we to cope and how should we interpret the myriad of news that is fed to us via “n “number of platforms, and can Government Corporations, Educators and the general public do anything to control the irrefutable sea change that mankind is about to face.
As an optimist, I believe that man’s quest to remain “king of the jungle” will spur him to maintain his control of machines; pessimists will quote: “Doomsday is near die all, die merrily” (Henry IV part 1). So far, previous predictions of man’s demise have not materialized. From the piercing of the ozone layer to Malthus’s prediction (1798) that we would all be reduced to subsistence levels due to food shortages the pessimists have been proved wrong.
I do think that it is likely that in the future I will watch the Abba Hologram concert from the comfort of my home on my mega screen; that driverless cars and air taxis will relieve city congestion and parking; that millions of workers will either not work at all or will work substantially reduced hours because they will receive a minimum government salary paid for by taxes levelled on robots that work 24/7 without pay (never mind pay rises) and do not strike.
The mega rich may live till 150 or be frozen till the secret of eternal life is discovered,  or even “rocket off” to live on Mars.
Wars, poverty and ruthless dictators will still hinder many from having a good life, but I firmly believe that vast numbers of humans will be living healthier and longer lives and the calamity predicted by so many of climatic disaster will be proved wrong because science and man’s ingenuity will save the day.
