I'm working on a small ESC project atm for which I'm looking at some national finals from this season and the 2021 season. And I noticed that there used to be a lot more internal selections two years ago compared to nowadays. Do you have any idea why that was the case/ why it changed? (I know it's a really random question but I thought you'd be the best person to ask :))
There are many countries that have their established national selections that are organised every year. UMK, Melodifestivalen, MGP, DMGP, Söngvakeppnin, Eesti Laul, Supernova, Festivali i Këngës, Festival da Canção just to name a few.
Then there are those countries that try different selection methods every few years, depending on the participating broadcaster, their financial situation and if there are any established artists showing interest to be selected internally. Some examples of those are Netherlands, Belgium (with two broadcasters), Moldova, Spain, San Marino, France, Malta, Georgia, Australia and Israel. Sometimes they organise a full national final, sometimes they choose just the artist via a talent show (Malta's X Factor 2019 & 2022, Georgian Idol 2019 & 2020), and sometimes they make an internal selection.
In 2022 TRM was planning to hold a full national selection but cancelled it after the preliminary round when it became clear there was no competition for Trenulețul. San Marino's 1in360 was scrapped after only one year letting Senhit & Flo Rida to represent the country and then Una voce per San Marino was founded in 2022. Israel, Slovenia and France also got big names with Noa, Joker Out and La Zarra so organising a NF would have been a waste of everyone's time and money, and so forth. This leads to the number of national selections changing from year to year, and I must admit that I haven't been invested in the subject enough to notice any strong trends.
2021 national final season is very exceptional since it was strongly effected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the 2020 contest got cancelled, a total of 24 countries decided to send their representative again the next year, and that lead to one-year hiatus for many established national selections. Most of those then returned again in 2022 👇
Czechia: Benny Cristo won Eurovision Song CZ 2020, was internally selected in 2021, in 2022 they had national selection ESCZ 2022 Iceland: Daði & Gagnamagnið won Söngvakeppnin 2020, were internally selected for 2021, Söngvakeppnin returned in 2022
Serbia: Hurricane won Beovizija 2020, were internally selected for 2021, in 2022 they had national selection Pesma za Evroviziju '22
Latvia: Samanta Tina won Supernova 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Supernova returned in 2022
Slovenia: Ana Soklič won EMA 2020, was internally selected for 2021, EMA returned in 2022
Australia: Montaigne won Eurovision - Australia Decides 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Australia Decides returned in 2022
Israel: Eden Alene won Rising Star 2020, was internally selected for 2021, in 2022 The X Factor Israel was used as the national selection
Romania: Roxen's entry was selected via Selecția Națională 2020, she was internally selected for 2021 as was her song, and Selecția Națională returned in 2022
Ukraine: Go_A won Vidbir 2020, was internally selected for 2021, Vidbir returned in 2022
Malta: Destiny was chosen via The X Factor 2020, internally selected for 2021, and in 2022 Malta Eurovision Song Contest was used as the national selection

Junior Eurovision 2023 detailed opinions before the show. Part 3
After two parts of my Junior Eurovision 2023 personal opinions before the show, it was time for the third one. We already covered the fifth, fourth and third tiers of my list, from the decent songs to my personal tear-jerkers. And now, with the reveal of the running order this day, and 8 songs to talk about, it's time for the second tier, where my almost-winner alert songs are. And by little differences with the winner ones.
The tier-list for reference, again!
Tumblr media
Tier 2: "I will kill OsterdahlEBU if they mess with the staging or the running order (or place the lower spots)/hj"
🇲🇹 Yulan Law "Stronger"
Malta is one of those countries that can make Junior Eurovision a real party. Two victories, one of them also slaying in the adult Eurovision (Destiny, in JESC 2015 and ESC 2021), and with most entries being bangers. After the robbery Gaia Gambuzza got in Yerevan at 2022 (and this year in adult Eurovision, Switzerland's 2nd Gjon's Tears copycat getting the final qualifier and not the happy lads from The Busker...), I was expecting a MIRACLE for them to have some justice this year. And it came in the shape of "Stronger"
Tumblr media
Yulan's voice, my gosh, serving in higher levels than I ever expected for a ballad, and after hearing some of them before this song got revealed, I'm glad to put her in this tier! Her lyrics are so charming alongside her vocals, and the music itself elevates the entire song to a higher level of the previous ballads I covered. The setting of the clip, while not my favorite, it's so calm and inspiring as the entry itself. And you tell me this song was composed by some Swedish writers? No wonder it slays a lot.
I have no ideas about how would be her perfect staging for the live show, but if it can convey the same feelings of the entire song, maybe it can be a well-done Top placer, even if performing second!
🇲🇰 Tamara Grujeska "Kaži Mi, Kaži Mi Koj"
For North Macedonia, I was accepting anything at the point the song was revealed. They like to vary in their JESC song styles, from 2021's bop about saving the planet to protect it as our only home, to 2022's definition of, citing one of my close mutuals, "Shut TF off, I'm not your girlfriend!" (and fun fact I discovered recently thanks to Misja Eurowizja, the same writer of that song was also the composer of Hurricane's "Loco Loco" (Serbia 2021, Eurovision). A lively "the same voice" meme incarnation XDXD). But the song they sent for JESC 2023 is something amazing, something I've never expected
Tumblr media
For a soft ballad-pop, it has some charm itself! The use of the ethnical instruments gives it more originality about the country itself, and it sounds so good with the melody. Even if not understanding the lyrics at first (without English translation, of course), Tamara's voice makes them so hypnotic and mesmerizing, one thing I LOVE of this song more than other ballads! And as for the video, they took the "smoke firework" theme from the slogan (and the "Heroes" theme) seriously to the point of incorporating it in the choreo.
The staging of this one can be (or not) linked to the studio video's scenario, but whichever idea it is, it has to be something enough to not ruin this song's feelings!
🇺🇦 Anastasia Dymyd "Kvitka"
I'm sorry for those of the ESC Discord server who have to watch me put this song in the higher places instead of lower ones. Yes, I understand there were better options in the Junior Vidbir like Polina Babiy's "Universe" or Denis Hryshchuk's "Dance", but somehow this song grew on me a lot after some listens. And after Zlata Dziunka's heart-breaking (and no joking about my feelings of that song T-T) yet beautiful song "Nezlamna" last year, I kinda felt a soft breeze of hope with this entry.
Tumblr media
Sure, I agree with them it becomes kinda repetitive with the "Kvitka" verse playing constantly in the chorus, but the feeling is what counts here! Anastasia's sweet and kind voice, alongside the "Find yourself in this world, and stop this tragedy" verse, highlight this hopeful feeling I got in the song. And as the song says, one day something can blossom from the rubbles of chaos and give a future. I never thought I would become attached to a JESC entry so much(well, and the next one I will cover), even if not being my winner alert!
Knowing she performs third, after Yulan Law and Sandra Valero, while the Vidbir staging makes the song get more cheerful than it is already, they need to make it bigger and more beautiful for Nice's stage if they want Anastasia to not place low, shine among the other kids and get some good televote, because she deserves it a lot!
🇩🇪 Fia "Ohne Worte"
Germany had it difficult both in the adult and the Junior versions of Eurovision. If it's not Jendrik Sigwart, Malik Harris or fricking Lord of the Lost getting the last places in their editions (unfairly in the last case), zero points or not, it's their two Junior singers at 2020 and 2021, Susan and Pauline, starting the show and getting the lowest (if not last) places too. And when I heard they would try again this year after a rest in 2022, I knew I had to follow the selections to see who would be their hope.
For the five kids that showed in the selections, there were three I expected to get the place: Adriano with a good moving song "Be My Girl", Rahel with a Sara James-like melody "Believe", and of course, the song that won over them (and my heart) and now is the German representant for Nice: Fia with "Ohne Worte" (without words)
Tumblr media
First, I gotta admit it, I'm BIASED with this song since the demo version (and as the first JESC 2023 song in progress), and there are some teeny weeny differences that place it not in my winner alert list. But it's for some good reasons!
I was surprised she decided to use sign language for her entry, and I wondered exactly why she did it. And after knowing the context and some of her before-JESC performances in The Voice using the same technique, she caught my heart.
Those performances, and the JESC song itself are for (and about) her little sister Emilia, the person that inspired Fia to do this special detail never seen in a Junior song, and something that makes this entry so relatable. If the demo version was alerting me with speakers I would get emotional over the entire song, it became true after the video (and full studio version) reveal (once again in the middle of work). And the final verses of the "without words" in multiple languages, that part made me love this song more than I already did, alongside the more-than-just-sweet videoclip :'3
The tier title was especially created for this one song, considering the past editions Germany had to struggle in Junior and adult Eurovision. And while at least they FINALLY have a decent running order slot, I'm still waiting for the staging to make this song more justice than it has already. There are rumours about a dance-break section for the live version and I hope, REALLY, REALLY HOPE, that it makes Fia get a Top 3 placement as she deserves it, and maybe WIN THE CONTEST (even above the next 4 songs I consider winners). I know, it's biased, but now you know why. But the thing I WOULD DREAD from all scenarios is that, even with the best made, somehow Germany gets last or lower places. That would break me a lot if that ever happens and I will get Osterdahl's head ;m;
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, that's 12 songs covered now in my ranking! Wait to the final part, the 4 songs that became my winners! See ya!

My thoughts on Eurovision 2023 entries
Tumblr media
On this post (which will be updated for 37 days), I will give my ranking, my ratings and my comments on the songs of Eurovision 2023.
Ukraine: TVORCHI - Heart Of Steel
Tumblr media
Rank: #25
Rating: 7,5 / 10
Even though I much prefer "Bonfire" (the song from Vidbir 2020), it's a good song and production. It's cool to see this kind of entries in the competition, it's very modern. Ukraine can be proud to have sent this song to Liverpool.
Albania: ALBINA & FAMILJA KELMENDI - Duje
Tumblr media
Rank: #23
Rating: 8 / 10
I like how the song starts, it's dramatic without overdoing it, it sounds very Albanian. Too bad the revamp removed the power of the song that we found at FiK 2022. Albina and her family will have no problem qualifying for the final, the Europeans will appreciate the family show.
Belgium: GUSTAPH - Because Of You
Tumblr media
Rank: #30
Rating: 6 / 10
Well, I admit "Because Of You" grew a little in me BUT I remain convinced that there were better choices for Belgium. It still sounds corny but it's danceable and listenable and frankly there's worse this year. Belgium's qualification for the final will depend on its running order in the 2nd semi-final.
Ireland: WILD YOUTH - We Are One
Tumblr media
Rank: #28
Rating: 7 / 10
The song itself is fine and Wild Youth knows how to perform, however the revamp took away the soul that was in the original version. It sounds more like a World Cup song than a Eurovision song and given the band's discography, they could have done better. I hope they don't bring those masks from the official clip back to Liverpool otherwise it's guaranteed Ireland will finish dead last in its semi-final.
Slovenia: JOKER OUT - Carpe Diem
Tumblr media
Rank: #3
Rating: 9,5 / 10
Slovenia made the right choice by selecting Joker Out internally. "Carpe Diem" is a diamond in the rough, a superb entry that reflects the group's universe well. The live performance is better than the studio version, the band members are very charismatic. Slovenia can achieve its best result in the contest with them.
Norway: ALESSANDRA - Queen Of Kings
Tumblr media
Rank: #18
Rating: 8 / 10
What a bop ! Norway made an excellent choice by choosing "Queen of Kings". It's very catchy and impactful, I like the idea of adding an Italian intro at the start of her performance and I hope it stays in the Eurovision version of the title. Norway can aim for the top 10.
Spain: BLANCA PALOMA - Eaea
Tumblr media
Rank: #2
Rating: 10 / 10
Modern and experimental flamenco ! I love this entry ! "Eaea" is perfect to represent Spain at Eurovision. Blanca Paloma is spellbinding with this dramatic and original song. She deserves the top 5 at least.
Czechia: VESNA - My Sister's Crown
Tumblr media
Rank: #19
Rating: 8 / 10
It's a great and well-produced song, but I still don't have any winner vibes to this day. It's sure that Czechia will be noticed this year, but be careful with the staging and the performance should not be messed up. I wish the final to Czechia but of all the favorite countries of the first semi-final, it is the one that has the best chance of not qualifying to everyone's surprise in my opinion.
Estonia: ALIKA - Bridges
Tumblr media
Rank: #12
Rating: 9 / 10
"Bridges" is simple but very effective, creative and original as a song. The live performance adds the necessary power for this song. Alika is an excellent performer, in Liverpool she will shine with her determination. Estonia will easily be in the final, it's the best Baltic song for me.
To be continued in the next post.

if there's nothing left of you and me there's nothing left of me: An Ode to the Amazing Songs We Lost in the Eurovision National Final Season 2023
YouTube Playlist Here
National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. This list contains the songs that got away, as well as some of the guilty pleasures, and songs I simply enjoy listening to, from the NF season of 2023.
Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I likely will have to replace with another upload at some point. I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).

11 Potential Ukraine Acts!
After scoring a top 10 as a host last year, Ukraine is almost ready to defend their legacy as the country with a 100% qualification streak. They'll be ready for the new format by the beginning of February, but for now, we get to speculate which song we want to see in Sweden come May because the 11 songs performing at Vidbir were released!
I ranked all 11 songs, but I'll be showing my top 5. As I mentioned earlier, MÉLOVIN is in the game to return to the contest after competing with the song "Under The Ladder" in 2018. I will also note here that Carpetman from Ukraine's 2022 act Kalush Orchestra made an attempt in the Wildcard round, but unfortunately didn't make the final round. So, here are my top 5 songs from Vidbir!
5. Ziferblat — Place I Call Home 4. SKYLERR — Time Is Running Out 3. ANKA — Палала (Palala) 2. MÉLOVIN — DREAMER 1. alyona alyona & Jerry Heil — Teresa & Maria
I feel so bad for forgetting to mention last year's Vidbir icon Jerry Heil is making a return, and honestly, she's Ukraine's best choice. My top 3 I feel could do really well on the Eurovision stage and I lowkey want to put them into my playlist (which I will say I'll do but then forget until much much later).

so every year (...well ok. I've only done like two, aaaand on review I actually cannibalized the Eurovision e Sanremo 2022 one for this one, oops) I do a playlist for the upcoming Eurovision including:
winner from the previous year
past entries from the winning country that were bops
past entries from the winning country's national qualifier (Vidbir, in this case) that weren't selected but are nonetheless good
past Eurovision entries that were bops (songs not in English or the original-language version of songs sung in English at the final take strong preference; if there's an English song in this category I had to consider it exceptionally iconic ("Heroes") or fun ("Discotheque").)
Songs that DNQ'd for this (and last) year's final that I still like
Songs that didn't make it to Eurovision due to snubbing or shenanigans in their respective national qualifier (only a few of these here because it depends on me hearing about them, but "Terra" by Tanxugueiras, "Ritmu" by Aidan, and "Gladiator" by Jann are the main examples from here.)
Songs from non-participating countries about Eurovision, a category that is truly only here because "Eurovusion (Open Up)" by Two Heart left an Impression on me
...and not including anyone who made it to the current year's Grand Final because my original intention for these playlists is to play them before the final during setup, so it's a spoiler-free experience for anyone going in cold and so I don't make myself sick of songs I'm already going to hear again, LOL
Anyway, here's about two and a half hours of that, enjoy if you want!
*Best listened to on shuffle, as it's layered in 'when I remembered to add this' order

Ok, as a ukrainian I'm disappointed and disguted about how shamelessly Alina's victory was fabricated. It seems, her producers paid a lot of money to make such dishonest and deceitful person win. Instead of admitting her mistakes and simply say "Look, I'm sorry, I was wrong" she just pretends that no fuckups happened. It's not her bad, it's us, who dare to ask her some uncomfortable questions.
Damn her.
Хай котиться під три чорти.

And soon I'll be happy with drowning in the rain: An Ode to the Amazing Songs We Lost in the Eurovision National Final Season 2024
YouTube Playlist Here
Disclaimer: I do not believe that a certain country should be allowed to participate in ESC due to the genocide that they are engaging in. Here are resources to help the people of Palestine 🇵🇸
National final season always means that we lose some fantastic songs that won’t ever get to grace to the big ESC stage, but I can memorialize all the other tracks I love here. This list contains the songs that got away, as well as some of the guilty pleasures, and songs I simply enjoy listening to, from the NF season of 2024.
Note that this is my personal taste, so I might be missing something you jive with. Songs are arranged by flow, not in a ranking. Some videos I likely will have to replace with another upload at some point. I went with studio recordings to be consistent (barring the bonus track).
This playlist is in no way meant to put down the actual winners.
