I recently got my hands on a grocery store variegated mini jade/elephant bush (portulacaria afra) plant for around $5 (US dollars). The entire seedling pot was actually made of three individual plants, so I split up the pot, adding two of the plants to a larger outdoor box arrangement and planting the third into a small 2" pot for eventual bonsai purposes.
Out of curiosity, I decided to see if I could encourage a couple of tiny trimmings into putting out roots through water propogation. So I put these tiny trimmings into a small vial of water.
We'll see what happens.

plants top to bottom, left to right:
Peperomia Napoli Nights (sorry I don't know the scientific name)
Aeschynanthus radicans (Lipstick plant)
Peperomia obtusifolia varig.
Sedum morganianum (Burro's tail)
Nematanthus wettsteinii (Goldfish plant)
Creeping button (another one where I can't find a consistent scientific name, but maybe peperomia rotundifolia)
String of turtles (another one where I can't find a consistent scientific name)
Portulacaria afra varig. (Elephant bush)
Peperomia hope (another crossbreed)
Fittonia albivenis (Nerve plant)
Echeveria purpusorum (very etiolated lol)
the babies! (Napoli nights, burro's tail, pep. hope)
another portulacaria (variegated. maybe rainbow?)
bergerocactus emoryi (golden snake cactus)
hoya carnosa (I think this is a pink princess but it is not very pink right now)
sempervivum tectorum (common houseleek/hens and chicks)
hoya carnosa compacta
schlumbergera truncata (Thanksgiving cactus)
I have so many more but it felt like so many already! eventually I'll do what I have on my illicit balcony garden.

Mixture of some of the original succulents and some newer, healthier succulents. I don't know how they quite managed it but some of the original plants were overwatered, some where heavily underwatered, and some were perfectly happy.

I'm sorry to be a bother. I purchased a bowl of different succulents. Maybe not the best idea but...I'm wondering if you can help me identify a few. I tried looking it up but was only able to id the aloe plant as aloe humilis. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Omg I never check my inbox so I’m just now seeing this I’m so sorry!! I’m not sure what all of them are but I think the one with the whitish spikes is an aloe Minnie belle. The one with the variegated leaves stretching across the bottom of the second photo is a portulacaria afra I think. I’m not sure about the others. I’ve asked @succygirl for help in the past and she’s always been great!

Plants I have that I let "grow wrong"
Tumblr media
starting off tame, goldfish plant (columnea nematanthus) which was separated into approximately 3 different pots when it came to me infested with fungus gnats. It will eventually all be repotted back together in one pot. I hope.
Tumblr media
polka dot plant (hypoestes phyllostachya) which, I believe, also came to me infected with fungus gnats and was water propped for... a while. it's happier in the soil but boy are those first water-propped stems long lol
Tumblr media
variegated elephant bush (portulacaria afra) which i was so happy to finally find but was (un?)fortunately grown to be more bonsai than bush. i uh... idk what i'm gonna do with these guys. I'm hoping for more top growth this summer so i can maybe chop and prop? Anyone know if chopping the main growth (the longest part) will kill it? I was hopping to re-prop in soil.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
peperomia hope (peperomia deppeana x quadrifolia) which just grew downwards for some reason which i discovered one day when the pot was off-centre where I picked it up to water it. The approximately 17 billion other ones I propagated did not do this and continued to grow normally... upwards. Anyway, I love him so i made him a special hanging pot so he can keep being weird.
Tumblr media
multiple baby burro's tail (sedum morganianum) the largest of which has been growing for... a while. Yes I know my plants are etiolated. Winter is long and my apartment faces north-west. I have "grow lights" that are just the IKEA bulbs that mimic sunlight because they're all I can afford. I'm doing my best!
Tumblr media
Here is The Big Boy version where these babies came from. They're very easy to propagate, you literally just put the fallen leaves on damp soil and they'll grow. (It can take a long time, though). This guy loses far fewer leaves than he used to, but you can see where he was struggling for a while.
Tumblr media
hens and chicks (sempervivum tectorum) rescued from outside before the Canadian winter. They sure are... doing something.
For reference, hens and chicks are supposed to look like this
Tumblr media
which these did uh... at one point. anyway i still like them a lot. might put back outside once summer comes just to see what happens. Or I might not. Maybe I'll let them be the trailing plant they deserve to be.

More Portulacaria afra, or Elephant Bush! I believe this is the non-variegated form since the stem is more woody and the leaves are green.

Portulacaria afra "Reverse Variegation" in 2020 | Cactus and succulents, Succulents, Succulent names
Tumblr media
Aug 10, 2020 - Portulacaria afra "Reverse Variegation" Portulacaria Afra Reverse variegation model is the rarer one of the three variegates. It has a central yellow line up the centre of the leaf with green on the outer margins. The more well know form has white outer margins and a green inner. There is also another more unusual form
