Early Concept Sketch of Val Royeaux
[Source]
This pen sketch of a circular layout for an early concept art of Val Royeaux. I find it to be really cute in and of itself, especially with the funny labels (listed below), and I think it offers a lot of play as to what might be around the little island market we get to see and could help with anyone wanting to build out this cultural center of Orlais for a fic or art piece.
Going from top left corner of the sketch to the bottom we have markers that list:
Palace
Hanging Gardens
Specialty Shops
Fashion Judgement Waiting Room
Then in the center:
Central Market
Statue/Fountain
Lookouts
Park Space
Then from top right corner down:
Royal Academy of Bath-housery (implying this is either the Royal Academy or a bath-house)
Boat Gates
Drawbridge

Guard 1: Stand weary, guardsmen! The inquisition is here… along with the “Herald of Andraste.”
Guard 3 (human PC): They say they found the Free Marcher covered in the Divine’s blood. Guard 3 (human mage PC): That’s the mage they said killed the Divine? Guard 3 (dwarf PC): I hear that dwarf was found covered in the Divine’s blood. Guard 3 (Dalish PC): They say they found the knife-ear covered with the Divine’s blood. Guard 3 (Qunari PC): They say that horned thing murdered the Divine.
Guard 1: Let [them] pass. The Inquisition is the templars’ problem. And they’ll fix it.
—
Guard 1: We know about your Inquisition. Val Royeaux has no time for heresy. The templars will be our voice
—
Guard 1: The templars didn’t even touch you?
—
Guard 1 (Qunari PC): I fought your kind years ago, Qunari. You don’t belong here.
Guard 1 (Dalish PC): I’ve never seen the Dalish stand for the Chantry except to fire a bow at it. My eyes are on you.
Guard 1 (dwarf PC): I’ve seen your kind use the Chantry, but you never believe in it. And I don’t believe in you, dwarf.
Guard 1: The Lord Seeker may not think you’re a threat, but he’s not here right now.
Guard 1: They say you’re scratching for power. Not on these streets, understood?
Guard 1: This is bullshit.
Guard 1: You trouble anyone, we’ll see how mortal you get.
—
Guard 2 (Qunari PC): You just… stay away from me. I don’t know what you are.
Guard 2 (Dalish PC): Go back to your own, elf. This city doesn’t need your “Inquisition.”
Guard 2 (dwarf PC): Leave me alone, and I’ll do the same, dwarf. My city doesn’t need this joke played on it.
Guard 2: Templars let you walk. Templars! What in the blazes?
Guard 2: Just don’t give me a reason, heretics.
Guard 2: They say a lot about you. Can’t believe any of that.
—
Guard 2: The city is closed to you: except for the Chanty and our templars—they’ll certainly take you.
—
Citizen 1: The templars will help us, as they always have. We’ve no need for an Inquisition.
—
Citizen 1: They left us. The templars left us to the mages! Chantry liars!
—
Citizen 2: May as well keep walking. I don’t deal with heretics.
—
Citizen 2: Our templars left? The Chantry promised they’d defend us!
Citizen 2: Ever since our Divine was murdered… toothless old fools are lost without her. What are the grand clerics doing while the mage circles lie empty?
—
Noble 1: The Inquisition? We don’t require that sort of thing in Val Royeaux.
—
Noble 1: There’s a war on, and the templars… just left?
Noble 1: This cannot stand. How can it stand?
Noble 1: What is the Grand Cathedral thinking? We must have a new Divine. She will show us the way.
—
Noble 2: It seems that powers align against this “Inquisition.” A pity, as you are the only ones who appear to care about the hole in the sky. But the Chantry is insistent.
—
Noble 2: Well, that was a change of affairs. You might find friends among the stunned and reeling.
Noble 2: The Chantry has just shown themselves helpless. Who will fetch their templars back, I wonder?
Noble 2: It seems change is on the wind. I wish your leaders well.
