Project 4 Process:
I really enjoyed this project as I’ve always dreamt of creating a logo, and this project allowed me the opportunity to create two logos inspired by randomly generated topic. I was given the words “Space” and “Alligator/Lizard”, I decided to go with a lizard for my animal as it was much easier to fit the typography of a shorter word into the parameters.
Project 5 Process:
I really appreciate that this project leads up to our final composition, so we aren’t just thrown into the deep end. For this project I have decided to use an assortment of hats for my piece as I didn’t want to have an object close to the examples. However, as I’ve been finding images to use I’ve been struggling with creating the descriptions for the syntax and denotation of each image.
Reading:
I enjoyed how Chapter 14 (Interactive Multimedia Installations and Interfaces) directly relates to our newest project and our final composition. I also really liked how in the beginning of the chapter broke down what job titles would be considered for certain categories (developer, designer, or programmer). For example, digital developers include web, software, user interface, interactive, and digital media developers. Chapter 15 goes into designers of apps for mobile devices including games, apps for security, family monitoring, photo editing, etc. My favorite part of this chapter was how during Frederique Krupa’s interview there was a section that went into detail about how the representation of women in the field has been increasing, “An increasing number of women are graduating from art schools with degrees in graphic design, communication, Web design, and design management” (Heller & Vienne 262).

Reading and Reflection #6
Reading:
Chapters 15-17
Sean bumgarner
“Most critical was trying to understand the interface between image and text. That's really what defines a magazine: While the images are affecting your experience of the text, ultimately the headlines, heads, subheads, captions, and quotes drive the experience. Figuring out how to make typography impactful on such a small screen is critical.”
After working on logos and typography projects, I can understand the struggle with considering the difference between seeing it on a phone screen and a computer screen. Oftentimes when I look at a website built to be seen on a computer it is so difficult to understand when seen on a tiny screen such as a phone.
Michel chanaud
I can respect the ambition to bring something unknown into the known! With how he brought design to France.
“Technology influences the form but also the content. The sort of information you’ll find in our app is unlike what you’ll find in your magazine:”
Very true, the form of technology is very different from a paper copy. More vibrant, spacious and accessible.
John kilpatrick
“. It forces hard decisions to be made. And those decisions are hugely important to the way consumers interact with the product.”
Believe it or not, even regular traditional art you have to take into account how the consumer will interact with the piece, because if it’s chalk it’ll get everywhere haha.
“New technology is getting easier and easier to create. With today’s user-friendly publishing tools and robust open APIs, and so on. it’s easier than ever to make your own application or Web product. And with all this added competition, it becomes that much more important to design a user experience that stands out in this crowded landscape.”
As much as I want to create my own website, designing shows me how inept I am with technology haha, it is not easy for me sometimes.
Nicolas Ledoux and Pascal Béjean
“vinyl, or paper products replaced it with colorful flat icons, the navigational vocabulary of Apple’s interfaces is still old-fashioned in our estimation.”
A Lot of apps and brands are going for the simple approach now for brand icons compared to when they first appeared. At first I did not realize why, and thought it was taking the individuality of why, but after creating my own logo it makes a lot more sense. With so much going on the internet it may be hard to see or even understand if it was not in color or if it was on something small. It also makes the logo more versatile to use. Simple but you know what it is. So it is easier to remember.
Frédérique Krupa
“ So the game’s visual quality will shift from technological achievement to aesthetic experiences.”
Very true, people prefer perfection rather than raw emotion nowadays, even in the art world, some people would rather a perfect bright image than a traditional dark painting.
“ Game artists give visual form to the gameplay set up by the game designers. One of my students was a walking bible of video game knowledge, and I suggested that she think about going into the profession. She said to me, “I couldn’t. I’m not good at math.” To which I responded, “Can you write?” “
Video games are a huge part of humanity nowadays, everyone plays a game, whether it's on their phone or not. Haha I also felt that math part, I am terrible at it, but I sure can write and that should be good enough.
16
Randy J. Hunt
“other leaders at Etsy respected both design and my point of view, and that allowed me to use resources and have their trust in developing design inside the company and the community”
I use Etsy all the time! What a surprise to see it in this textbook! I should not be surprised though, It was just unexpected compared to all the bigger branded things listed in this textbook.
“As the voice of design for and within Etsy, I work to make sure design is part of our strategic discussions and informs and supports our decision making.”
The design of Etsy is very compact and full, I like it gives you a lot to look at but also can be quite confusing at times.
“These days I design high level strategy, and I design teams. From time to time, I have the chance to engage in more elemental design work at Etsy, and also in projects I do in my leisure time. I’m equally satisfied and fulfilled with designing all along that spectrum.”
I believe that this is highly respectable and impressive, I was student body president in highschool, and I did stuff similar just in a more hands on experience. It was always so fun, managing committees, leading people and teams to get decorations and events done for the school, I imagine it is similar for designing teams for projects.
Lucy Sisman
“I loved working in magazines. I loved the pace, the drama, the discipline, the diversity of my job—from quiet moments working on layouts; crazy deadlines and all-nighters; bullish, rowdy competitive meetings; long collaborative hours in the studio or on location inventing images—and all with someone else picking up the bill.”
I actually can understand this alot! Last year for my senior year in highschool I took AP 2D design, and I had to complete 4 pieces in 3 hours as my final, as I was so under pressure, but some of my most beautiful works came from those few hours. Plus I was so happy when I was able to finish on time. So I imagine owning my own business in it will be just as hectic!! I am mentally prepared for deadlines especially on holidays, and know to pay attention to shipping dates.
“There is something about working for somebody else that I just don’t like. “
I relate so much. I got a normal job, and I absolutely hated it, the ignorance of my managers did not help. Let me do what I know how to, I work faster when left alone. Unfortunately, that is not the scene you get at a job.
Reflection:
Project 5 was quite easy compared to past projects, there was not much to learning other than trying to make the pictures take up all the same space as each other and that proved difficult.
the picture that gave me the most pain was the rain boots, and the horse riding boots, since the background was not fully white, and the horse-riding boots were much larger than the others so making the image fit was quite annoying.

Week 9 and 10 of ARTS 102
In these past week's reading, Chapter 15 in Becoming a Graphic and Digital Designer went over the process of designing apps for mobile devices. It details the importance of user interface designers and the complex workflow of thoughts that must be considered when creating interfaces for mobile devices. As it is not the same as computers and a lot more is held on the stakes of mobile app design for users. Especially nowadays when many mobile apps hold most of today's communication. It is wonderful to hear all the accounts of the designers because they all sound so enthusiastic about creating User interfaces. It was interesting hearing about game design and its influence on the user from Frederique Krupa. Mainly, because of how it influences him in his design efforts as games can be so motivational. So far, this was my favorite chapter because of how it tackles design for user interface in so many ways. It even had a small commentary at the end about women’s involvement in becoming more prominent in their creative careers. It made me more interested in the career of being a user interface designer and how broad of projects you can work on as one. Last week's class was working in adobe illustrator to make the logos which was not too bad, and it was enjoyable for me. Made a combination of a sketches to make Lydia's Mark which I'm quite happy with. I got to learn more about how to use it and it was quite easy to navigate through it. I had to do a few tweaks, here and there within the sketches and translate them back into adobe illustrator but not too many changes were made. In this week's class we are completing our marks for our 4th project. We worked on concept statements, color palettes, and fixing things to help scale the marks in any size. I feel happy with my design but there are a few gripes I had throughout the working process. I chose a better typeface that helped the mark stand out more. I tried to play with gestalt's theory a lot within my logos but in turn I feel like my logos came out a bit too simple. However, I wanted it to be simple because I thought it fit more with the project parameters. I like the colors I chose, though I was worried because I thought the marks looked better in black and white, so I chose monogamous colors or just one color for each mark to kind of act as a highlight. With the help of my professor I was able to create like a background or outline for my Beetlejuice mark. This helped with adding a color to the mark and brought out the stripes a bit more. The process of compiling everything into Adobe InDesign was nice and it made me satisfied with the work I did. I think the only thing I would change within my work would probably be to study gestalt principles a bit more so I can make more illustrative marks to be more eye-catching.

The ‘Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself’ Meme Has Gone Mainstream
By Adam K. Raymond
A candidate who called himself Epsteindidntkillhimself Webber attempts to file to be listed on the New Hampshire primary ballot. Photo: Charles Krupa/AP/Shutterstock
The conspiracy theories started as soon as Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his jail cell. The Clintons killed him, or Trump killed him, or a mysterious “someone” killed him. For a brief moment, the public became enamored with the idea that a wealthy child sex trafficker was murdered by one of his powerful friends whose own criminal behavior Epstein could expose. Then the moment passed.
Now, nearly three months later, the conspiracy theory is back with a little less sincerity and a lot more irony. And what started last month as an online meme has begun to spill into the real world, where normies at college football games and craft breweries are reminding everyone who will listen that “Epstein didn’t kill himself.”
Know Your Meme traces the dominant style of the Epstein meme — the bait-and-switch image ending with the phrase “Epstein didn’t kill himself” — to the iFunny user MrFate77, who is believed to have posted the original on October 2. (…)
As the meme spread in all the normal meme-spreading ways, an 85-year-old forensic pathologist went on Fox News on October 30 and threw gas on the fire. Michael Baden, who had been hired by Mark Epstein to observe his brother’s autopsy, told Fox & Friends that “the evidence points to homicide rather than suicide.”
He wasn’t saying anything new to those who’d already been paying attention. The hard-core conspiracy theorists were reading medical journals about hyoid-bone breakage months ago. But Baden was, for the first time, attaching his name and credentials to the suggestion that, as the meme says, “Epstein didn’t kill himself.” A flood of new headlines followed, with many failing to note that Baden was on the Epstein payroll or other reasons to question his assessment.
Three days later, a former Navy SEAL appeared on Jesse Watters’s Fox News show ostensibly to talk about his work with retired military dogs. But as Mike Ritland later told GQ, he also wanted to “keep [the Epstein story] in the news so it doesn’t get forgotten about.” So Ritland made like the meme, launching into a sincere plea about responsible pet adoption and ending with the non sequitur that made this clip go viral. (…)
The meme was no longer confined to online images. A sign with the slogan was hung from a California freeway. John McAfee announced plans for a new crypto coin called “Epstein didn’t kill himself.” And on Friday, Rod Webber, a Massachusetts man with a history of stunts around primary time, attempted to get on the presidential primary ballot as Epsteindidntkillhimself Webber. This wasn’t a political statement. Webber says he doesn’t identify with either party. But it was attention-grabbing. (…)

‘Sharks Are Amassing’: Tracker Shows Great White Sharks Gathering on East Coast
— By Sam Raskin | New York Post | December 05, 2021
Tumblr media
A Twitter user recently raised the alarm by posting a screenshot of a tracker app showing about 100 sharks gathering in the Atlantic Ocean near the East Coast of the US.
A platform user with the handle @punished_stu tweeted early Wednesday “sharks are amassing on the east coast” with an accompanying screenshot of about 100 sharks along the US coast line. The tweet went viral, garnering more than 6,000 retweets and 53,000 likes.
“I occasionally log in to check that the nearest Great White is at least 2000 miles away,” the Twitter user followed up.
The graphic came from shark tracking website Ocearch, which attempted to calm unnerved social media users.
A spokesperson for the tracker told The Sun there’s no cause for concern.
“We are currently studying the Northwest Atlantic White Shark, the white sharks that live off the Eastern United States and Canada,” the rep explained. “This is why we have so many recently tagged sharks in this area. We have tagged 83 white sharks in the NW Atlantic.”
Dr. Christopher Lowe, Director of the Shark Lab at California State University, said the predatory fish detections weren’t “terribly uncommon” and that climate change is the likely culprit for the uptick in sharks along the coast.

Dr. Christopher Lowe said that climate change is the likely culprit for the uptick in sharks along the coast. Charles Krupa/AP
“This isn’t terribly uncommon since most of these sharks were likely tagged at nearshore locations,” he said, according to the Sun. “Although, this is typically the season when smaller sharks are migrating to warmer southern waters.
He added, “Much of this pattern is likely attributed to changing oceanographic conditions caused by climate change.”
Over the summer, shark sightings in Florida increased as more people returned to beaches.

Ch. 15: Designing Apps & Ch. 17: User Experience
Tumblr media
As technology progresses, the field of graphic design is becoming larger and larger and more important than ever. User interface and user experience is so important to today’s society because society runs on technology. I have been lucky enough to begin take a class purely on html & CSS coding as well as user interface and user experience design work. The class has taught me so much about what is needed to make web and other web-based experiences both user friendly and an efficient tool for communication as well as visually pleasing and interesting for the viewers of the site. While this field of design is not necessarily something I want to pursue further, the skills and knowledge I’ve gained from the class are invaluable and can be used in a variety of different applications beyond web and mobile development. I really loved reading about Frederique Krupa and her work with mobile game development. What I found interesting is how she defined what the role of a game designer is and how there are many misconceptions about what they do in the field. She explains that there is so much more to the development of the game beyond just the visuals, game designers do more of the storytelling than anything else. This was a very interesting this week, and I love how it applied to what I am learning currently!

this week we read chapter 15 and 17 which pertains to creating digital content for people to view online. in chapter 15, I really enjoyed the interview with Frédérique Krupa, and she discusses how designers are supposed to be advocates for the users. she talks about aesthetics in games and how aesthetics are undervalued in society. she goes on and talks about how she can't name an ugly game that didn't do well. i feel like a lot of people undermine the job that a designer has to do to make their content successful. people don't want to look at ugly things. i feel that this could go for TV shows and Movies as well. A notable example for me is the grubhub commercials, they're terrible.
we're halfway through the Sports Team rebrand project. I don't like the project as much as I thought I would, but I feel like it's because I'm very overwhelmed with other projects, assignments, and responsibilities that I can't put the time into it that I want to. Overall though I don't hate what I've done so far, I feel like its a good start, but I would def like to go back to beef up my work in the future

Chapter Fifteen // Designing Apps for Mobile Devices
Before reading this chapter, I really never considered the difference between designing something on a screen where touch isn’t necessary vs. designing for a screen where it’s expected to be mostly (or all) touchscreen-based. When reading the section of the chapter focused on Nicolas Ledoux and Pascal Béjean, I found it interesting that they only released their app to the iPad. Even more so, that they did this because apple users are ‘design-conscious.’ I can definitely respect that statement as apple has a very sleek and effective design. I also found it fascinating when Frédérique Krupa discussed how video game aesthetics (which was topped in the ‘list of priorities’ by making stuff photo-realistic, for a moment) may be just as or more important than the ‘gameplay.’

Drummers get ready, the future of performance is in your hands. What once was an odd novelty sound effect, has matured into a valuable music making tool. Electronic drums, Computers and MIDI have given drummers the opportunity to express themselves in a cost effective, performance, and studio friendly manner. MIDI devices are part of every studio today, and if you’re involved with a project on a limited budget, a electronic drum kit might just win you the job. Drum trigger units from Alternate Mode, Roland,Alesis,Yamaha, Ion, and others are a great starting point for any electronic drum setup.Add a pad configuration of your choice, giving you a virtually unlimited expressive potential, a small price to pay to turn those years of practice into valuable midi data other musicians can use. This is the real power of electronic drums ; their ability to send and receive data to and from other midi devices . Another bonus of these drum trigger units are, that they sound great right out of the box. With hundreds of sounds, so close to acoustics they might just make Gene Krupa roll over in his grave!
IMPORTANT ELECTRONIC DRUM FEATURES
Electronic drums are comprised of two components the brain or trigger module, and the pads what the user plays on. What is important in a drum pad?
IMPORTANT PAD FEATURES
1)FEEL. A soft natural gum rubber pad will give the best feel, quietest response and a natural rebound (Compare for yourself) A stiff non resilient pad will only hinder your playing and desire to perform.
2)DURABILITY is not far behind feel .Pads should be proven to take abuse and last a lifetime .(What big tours use them? You wont see tours choosing product that doesn’t hold up. )
3)ACCESSIBILITY. Can you get to the parts if a problem occurs or do you have to ship them back to the manufacturer? This is a major issue, there is nothing worse than a broken pad wire you cant get to.
4)MOUNTING. Can you position your pads in any place at any angle? Most manufacturers choose off the shelf acoustic drum hardware giving less flexibility in mounting .Remember electronic drums are not acoustic and have a whole different set of dilemmas in mounting.
5) PAD NOISE. There is nothing more annoying to someone listening to someone bash away at a loud electronic drum set. Kind of defeats a lot of the purpose of playing on pads. Often referred to as the quietest pads around even quieter than mesh heads.
8)PRICE.There isn’t much inside a electronic drum pad. You pay for the design the way it mounts, the way it feels, the way it responds and the reputation of the company who makes them. Use your own judgement .
