Precision and speed

I brought home the Skoda Octavia L&K in November of 2021. Since day one I am in love with this car, the car seems overpriced to a lot of people but the Octavia has to be the most beautiful car in Indian market. The 2.0 liter TSI petrol with snappy 7 speed DSG gearbox is so much fun, the almost imperceptible upshifts seamlessly stitch the power curve to deliver one linear and uninterrupted shove.

Design: You can’t get enough of this design, we are not looking at some crazy road presence or tall huge vehicles it’s just a simply good design which gives that premium feels for every buck you paid for it. It compliments a professional looks like a business car.

The more than enough ground clearance of Octavia surprisingly doesn’t disturb its sports sedan look. This elevated design also reflects in the electric tail gate it goes all the way up from the rear

screen, SUVs are doing this for years but it’s too cool when a sedan does it. It’s easier for boot access. This car is fierce inside out, the cabin is full of stitched soft touch materials and the interior lighting looks amazing with the ambient lighting which can be individually adjusted. This car makes a remark and stands out you will feel the work and effort invested for this design.

Drive: This car will make you smile whenever you have a straight open road. Around the corners the car is great many didn’t find it as good as its previous generation but I come from the XUVs and the Kodiaqs of this worlds, hence any sedan can impress me there. The ride quality is good as the suspension is softened up, which slightly decreases the handling confidence.

The shift by wire technology with this gear selector takes some to get used to. The virtual cockpit of this car is also great works very well. I just love the two-spoke design and the quality of the switchgear, especially the knurled roller controller. Also Octavia has park assist so it can park itself, shockingly too good at it. This car has some really bright and fancy light.

Comfort: The ride is great there is adequate space in the rear but the most comfortable seats are obviously driver and pillion passenger seat. They get memory functions and electric adjust it’s a good place to be. The space at rear is way less than its SUV competition, but hey you saw that coming right? It has the best air conditioner I have ever used the seats are very nice comfortable. The comfort aspect for me is not complete if there isn’t a great fragrance in the car, that’s why I use the involve origin aurum, It makes me feel comfortable and calm while driving and neatly complements the cars comfort level. The ambient lighting calms you downand the canton music system has no comparison what so ever. This car gets sunshade for both windows at the rear and also a manual sunshade for the rear screen. 2 USB C at the rear and 2 at the front with a wireless charger, wireless android auto and apple carplay. The car itself doors are strong with thick windows outdoor noise cancellation works very well in this car. We know there can’t be a perfect car. Sunroof is major miss here, this car has an amazing roof I love it but sunroof is must at this point. Rear seat are bit too close to ground. ADAS features are also missing in this car which is a bit disappointing, it has auto braking before collision, the car sometimes brakes on its own at low speeds even when there’s nothing ahead. The infotainment system good but too many controls are in that screen temperature controls are also in that system.

It’s a bit different too operate at first. With a 600 liter boot space this car can fulfill all your business and personal needs of boot. This car is elegant it doesn’t want to be like anyone and stands out very well, reflects what the Czech car maker wanted to convey. Is it overpriced? Depends to which car you are comparing it to. That will be lot of argument and this car misses a lot of things that a car at such price point should come with. New Bounty (2k words, M/M & Gen)

For Day 20 of @danganronpashipmonths Saioma month. Inspired by the prompt : Sci-fi

Shuichi, Maki, and Kaito are bounty hunters in this sci-fi universe. They've stuck together for a while, and eventually decide to get a new target. One mysterious, and somewhat attractive, Kokichi Oma.

Looking around, Shuichi briefly adjusted his gas mask again - pulling on the straps to make it that bit tighter. To his immediate left he could see more of the chaos of Clemen - incredibly crowded streets and skies, with at least one brawl going on. To his right was a wall, which was honestly just reassuring - less places (generally) to get attacked or pickpocketed from. Behind him were Kaito and Maki, waiting at the data collection point as new information was loaded onto their space-USB.

Kaito was in much of the same gear Shuichi was in, a gas mask, flexible but protective plated armour - except he’d painted his in an almost magenta purple - although it was probably a bit brighter than that. The fabric underneath and seams that connected the armour reflected the immediate galaxies and star patterns around them; which Kaito thought was cool - and Maki thought was a waste of tech. He had painted his armour in a dark blue, with black as the fabric underneath - no extra quirks.

Maki didn’t want or need armour, of course. He supposed that was one of the advantages of being a Miasmis, along with her other abilities. Being able to turn your skin either into weapons or crystal due to advanced morphing was pretty cool. Not that it stopped from carrying a frankly excessive amount of weapons anyway. She argued they were useful for bounty hunting.

Because that was what the trio had been doing these past few years (generally) - they’d been bounty hunting. Shuichi was generally their tracker, or their detective - working out where the target was. Kaito had turned out to be a great pilot and a good driver of most alien tech, so he got them to their destination (and enjoyed high speed pursuits slightly too much). Maki was the one who generally took their target down, and she was also just incredibly scary. That was always a bonus for when they were co-ordinating how much they should all be paid.

“It’s downloaded,” Maki announced, taking the USB in her hand and closing a fist around it.

“You not a fan of Clemen?” Kaito guessed, although he began to move away with her.

“Are you?” Maki shot back, cutting through the crowd and grabbing Kaito’s hand (she always said it was so he didn’t lose them).

“It’s certainly…” Shuichi considered his words, “Profitable.”

“You mean a den of criminal activity,” corrected Maki, “The sooner we get out of here, the better.”

With minimal conversation (and minimal difficulties) the three made it back to their ship, with Shuichi immediately plugging in the USB.

“Find any bounties near us?” Maki asked, half-reading over his shoulder.

“Yes, actually,” Shuichi had clicked on the profile already, “Kokichi Oma. Unknown species. Two separate people are asking for him.”

“Really?” Kaito asked, “What’d the guy even do?”

“One’s for robophobia,” Shuichi scrolled down for a few seconds, “And the other one doesn’t specify, but it’s a lot of money.”

“Who from?” Maki asked.

“Android named K1-B0.”

“The one that will pay us well.”

“Ah.” Shuichi scanned the page for a second, “The genius inventor Miu Iruma.”

“Miu Iruma?” Kaito questioned, “Dude, let’s go for him!”

“Why?”

“Cause it’s for Miu Iruma!” Kaito was grinning, “Y’know, the Miu Iruma? She invented most of what’s on high tech spaceships, half of our weapons are designed by her. The intricacies of aerodynamics in-”

“So where do we find him?” Maki cuts across Kaito, moving closer to Shuichi and scanning over the information herself. Both reading and watching Maki, Shuichi pinpoints the exact time they both recognise the ship listed as Kokichi’s. As luck would have it, it’s parked directly next to theirs. Their gaze immediately shifts out of the window, Maki’s eyes narrowing and glowing slightly red.

Kaito follows their gaze for a second, and then grins, “No way, that’s his ship? I guess the universe is with us on this one.”

“The universe is an inanimate object and doesn’t want us to succeed,” Maki points out, before beginning to move towards the weapons lab, “What are we waiting for, let’s go.”

Shuichi ends up grabbing his usual gear, along with Kaito. Maki takes her most expensive weapon, something dubbed a ‘nano-hurt’. It can transform into any weapon, apparently. Shuichi’s only seen it morph into four. Maki also takes multiple sleeping drugs, complaining about the lack of information on the file. It’s all very well trying to send someone to sleep with chemicals, but aliens have such different biology than one chemical could kill one, do nothing on another, and empower a third. It’s quite remarkable.

“Remember, he’s a wanted criminal - so I want both of my sidekicks to be careful,” Kaito said as they got off, looking around at the ship - seeing if any traps would immediately be obvious.

“Technically he’s not a criminal, just a wanted person.”

Maki rolled her eyes, “Technically that Keebo wanted him arrested for robophobia, so…”

Going up to the door, there was a second as they all stared before Kaito walked up and knocked. He didn’t try anything else, just went up and knocked. Shuichi could see Maki’s eyes glow red in annoyance and fear, but nothing happened. Frowning slightly, he took out their door opener (it was some high tech stuff that Maki had brought and didn’t tell them the name). As it attached to the door, there was a second or two while it whirred before the door slid away.

Looking among themselves, Maki walked in immediately and waited for a second before giving a subtle thumbs up behind her. Following closely, Kaito and Shuichi instinctively gripped their weapons - looking around curiously. With a hiss, the sensors around Shuichi’s gas mask suddenly opened as the door closed. The air in here was safe to breathe. Watching Kaito for a second, Shuichi let the mask hang around his neck - enjoying being able to breathe freely while on a bounty hunt.

He regretted taking the mask off though, maybe five seconds later. Gas descended from the ceiling, immediately making Kaito and Maki cough. Only a second later, Shuichi double-over as he joined them - wheezing, his eyes running slightly. He had a pounding headache, and black spots began to come over his vision - becoming larger and larger until his vision faded to black.

With a gasp, Shuichi opens his eyes again. The weight of his weapons are gone, he can feel that much, but his mask is still around his shoulder - and his armour is still on. In the… cell he’s in, he seems almost untouched. There is a nasty headache from the gas however. Listening. Shuichi tries to hear Kaito or Maki’s voice as he presses his hand up against the wall, trying to investigate. He’s sure Kaito’s first instinct is to scream, and if Shuichi can’t hear him he doubts he can hear Shuichi. But, after making sure there’s nothing on the walls, Shuichi straightens to call for help. “Guys? It’s me…”

He hesitates, not wanting to use his full name, “The detective on the case! The one who led us to our last assignment through a cheese store?”

There’s no response from any of his friends, but there's a laugh from in front of him. As Shuichi bunches his fists, the wall becomes transparent. And Shuichi blinks in disbelief at what he sees.

There is a human in front of him. There is, definitely, a human in front of him. He’s shorter than Shuichi, although not by a ridiculous amount, and he has dyed purple hair - along with purple eyes. Something in the back of his mind lets him know that his captor is very attractive, and precisely Shuichi’s type. Shuichi ignores that bit of his brain.

Instead, he focuses on the rational side of his mind, and asks, “Who are you?”

“Awww, not who am I? Or where am I?” The human comes slightly closer, a pout on his face, “So the memory gas didn’t work on you, huh?”

“Memory gas?” Shuichi repeats, taking a step back, “No - it didn’t. What memory gas?!”

“Neeheehee, who knows?” His smile becomes slightly larger, “I am a liar, afterall.”

“So you were lying just now?”

“Yeah. Whatevs. Big deal,” he rolls his eyes, “I knocked you out with chloroform. Now, what’s your name?”

“My name?”

“Are you gonna have a habit of repeating me?” He questions, “I’m only tolerating it cause you’re my favourite, y’know.”

Deciding not to comment on the last bit, Shuichi took a deep breath. The longer he could keep his enemy talking, the more time Maki or Kaito had to escape. “I’m… Shuichi.”

“You sure? You don’t sound sure.”

“Yes.” “Do you wanna know mine?”

“Sure.”

“Ok,” Kokichi grinned, “You’ve got to beg for it, though.”

“What do you mean beg for it?”

“On your knees, y’know. That sorta thing.”

“I’m not begging you.”

“What about… a game?”

“A game?” Shuichi thought for a second, “In exchange for what?”

“If you win, I tell you my name,” His captor stepped closer to the wall between them, “And if you win - I’ll remove this!”

“You’ll let me go?” “No. I’ll remove this,” his eyes seem to sparkle, “I could still tackle you or something, y’know.”

Shuichi stared at the boy for a second, before he smiled, “You wouldn’t.”

“Are you challenging me?”

Hoping this could be his ticket out, Shuichi tried to mimic the boy's grins, “Yes.”

His smile suddenly becomes more infectious, and then he suddenly sits down, cross-legged. In a way, he reminds Shuichi of a cat - graceful, and like a trickster. Shuichi always liked cats. Gesturing next to him, the boy makes a hand motion to the free space, inviting Shuichi to come and sit next to him. And for some reason, Shuichi does - almost immediately. And for some reason, he blushes slightly at how close they are.

“I think we should give each other nicknames,” the boy suddenly declares, “You want to go first?”

“I- why… are we giving each other nicknames?” Shuichi asks.

“Well, you need to call me sooomething. And a nickname’s perfect for that!”

“Ok, but how can I give you a nickname already, we barely know each other.”

“Hmmm,” he seems to consider it, head tilted slightly in thought, “I know - we can play another game!”

“Another game?” Shuichi says, somewhat skeptically.

“Yep.” He grins, “Let’s play two lies, one truth.”

“Isn’t it two truths, one lie?”

“Well… I’m a liar,” He answers, as if that explains it. “Now my turn! Ok… I run an evil organisation, it has over ten thousand members, and I killed your friends!”

“You-” Shuichi cuts himself off, trying to think rationally. His captor doesn’t honestly seem very malicious, more curious and playful, almost fun. “The lie is… it’s an evil organisation?” “Bzzt! Wrong!” He grins, “You have one more guess, or I’ll take your soul.”

“Sure,” Shuichi deadpans, something in his heart fluttering as he hears the boy laugh in response, “Is it that it has over ten thousand members?”

“Ding, ding, ding! Ten points to Shumai!”

“Shumai?”

“Yeah, it’s my nickname for you,” he explains, “Do you like it? Do you? Do you?”

“Yes, I do,” something in Shuichi is surprised as he realises it’s an honest response,” My turn?”

“Yup,” the boy leans back slightly, “Show me your worth, peasant!”

Deciding to ignore him, Shuichi thinks for a second, “Ok. I’m… thirty-three, I used to be a detective before I ended up in space… and I… really miss my dog.”

“You used to be a detective,” the boy says, “Honestly Shuichi, that was like… suuuper easy. Try again.”

“Ok. I miss my uncle, I had a degree in criminology back on Earth… and I wear contacts.”

This time, it takes him a second more to decide, face in a mask of careful neutrality before there’s suddenly a grin, “You miss your uncle. That was better, though.”

“Good enough for me to know your name?”

He laughs, “Fiiiine. But only cause you’re fun, mkay? I’m Kokichi Oma!”

“Kokichi,” Shuichi repeats, making sure he gets the pronunciation right, “You’re from Japan, right?”

“Ding, ding, ding,” Kokichi smiles, “Bonus points if you can get my postcode!”

“No,” Shuichi says flatly, although something in him smiles. Something about Kokichi… makes him smile.

An open letter to Tidal Streaming

I am both an artist ( 33 Bowls ) with material on Tidal and a satisfied, so far, customer. I know what my music sounded like and sounds like, and can state unequivocally that MQA is closer to the real thing than even hi-res HD PCM; the nuances, the textures, the relaxed ease of listening, the details, the space, the timing, the soul of the music are present with MQA in ways that, as good as HD PCM can sound, are simply not quite there with HD PCM (erroneously referred to as HD FLAC, more on that later). Compared to MQA, PCM (including “HD” high bit rate PCM) also has a glare, zing, edge that on some systems can sound brighter and therefore be mis-interpreted as better --- when in fact that is an artifact of PCM sampling that MQA uniquely ameliorates. When you listen to a good MQA demo at a salon, studio or show, you will understand why major players in the music biz have enthusiastically embraced MQA, with 20 Million tracks to date mastered in MQA.

It is understandable but not commendable for Tidal’s new management to hedge their bets on MQA. However, such a backtrack away from the customer base that Tidal built their reputation upon is not necessarily the brightest business strategy. Is Tidal management counting on very short term memory of the existing customer base when backtracking away from the millions of MQA mastered and remastered tracks described by Tidal as this?

“Master. Authenticated files from mastering process. Studio quality. Unrivaled clarity and depth.”

Going after a minority of customers from a smaller competitor while alienating existing customers will “bite you in the butt” eventually. Don’t alienate your existing customer base. All it will take is one streaming competitor, larger or smaller, hosting the millions of MQA tracks that already exist. It would behoove Tidal to pay attention to actual current long term Tidal customers who are the customer base and word of mouth that Tidal has built the business upon, and ignore haters and trolls who are not actually current Tidal customers.

Adding more customer choices, in this case, formats, is usually a good thing, however, excluding an existing customers’ preference as a default option is just plain short sighted.

See, if instead of being swayed by a small but shrill group of sock puppet trolls, haters, and shills, if you actually listen to a good MQA demo at a salon, studio or show, you will understand why major players in the music biz have enthusiastically embraced MQA as evidenced by 20 Million tracks to date mastered in MQA.

Unlike the hodge poge of so called “hi-res” HD PCM and DSD formats vying for attention as incremental improvement at an exponential cost of bandwidth and file size; with no standardized conjugate reconstruction filters, that all to varying degrees have inherent audible time smear aka temporal blur from gibbs phenomena pre and post ringing on transients; while providing no authentication --- no other format or process can do what MQA does: elegantly, efficiently and accurately reproducing all of the music end to end; being backwards compatible with existing equipment and infrastructure, and being able to clean up existing digital masters.

As to the misnomer of “specialized decoder” --- not needed. As MQA is backwards compatible, MQA files can play back with improved fidelity on legacy 1fs 44.1/48 DACs and decoders with no USB driver issues. So called hi-res HD PCM “FLAC” files are not plug and play, and do actually need specialized drivers, hardware and software. For instance, Tidal Desktop with MQA software decoding, aka first unfold enabled, feeding an R2R DAC can sound quite nice. Such an option as default needs to remain in future updates of Tidal Desktop, Android and Apple apps.

It’s ludicrous that this needs to be explained again: FLAC is a container, not the contents. When streaming bit perfect PCM material, whether CD quality 44.1/16, or so called hi-res HD PCM, or authenticated MQA, bit perfect lossless bit packing that FLAC uses was invented by the same Bob Stuart who also happens to be a co-developer of MQA. So, he wrote the book on that. He knows what he is doing. More here:

In summary: the internet is full of obnoxious sock puppets, trolls, haters, shills. You should know better than to listen to or be swayed by them. There are good reasons why top recording engineers, producers, mastering engineers prefer MQA as closer to the source than other formats and processes. Take good care of MQA, as MQA has taken good care of you, and will continue to do so, if you are up for it.

Update:

It appears that at least some of the tracks that Tidal is now claiming are HD PCM “Tidal max” are likely up-sampled MQA 44.1k or 48k folded tracks. One label states that their streamed tracks, directly or via aggregator, are all MQA, and that none have been resubmitted as 96k or 192k HD PCM. Unlike MQA’s inclusion of embedded proof of provenance coded and buried in the dither, to indicate that the bitstream is bit for bit perfect from the studio, the flac container has no such provision for authentication. So, HD PCM “Tidal max” files could be upsampled versions of folded MQA sources, and there is no way to prove or disprove that assertion, except to perform real time FFTs of the files. And, there is more to MQA than just sample rate: correct conjugate filtering with minimal time smear or dispersion on transients also known as de-blurring is a perceptually significant feature of MQA, which is ruined when an MQA file is up-sampled rather than unfolded. Max, as HD or high bit rate PCM delivered via FLAC container as a “preferred” default is a step backwards compared to the excellent sonics of MQA, also delivered via FLAC container.

You’ve been brought up around smartphones and tablets all your life, and now you’re in a situation where you need to use a Windows PC. No problem! With a little practise, you’ll find that PCs are easier to work with and can even do more than a mobile device. Incidentally, “PC” in this context stands for “personal computer”. It’s a holdover from the IBM PC in the ‘80s. These are the absolute bare-bones basics of computer literacy and can apply to MacOS and Linux distros as well, but Windows is the most common OS (operating system) that you’ll find on a day-to-day basis.

So, let’s get on with it then!

First, let’s cover the biggest bit of computers: USB devices. The USB standard is even used to a certain degree on smart devices, but they get taken to an absurdist extreme on the PC. Literally everything of practical use these days connects to the PC through a flat USB port. That flat bit that goes into your device charger can also be plugged into a PC for file transfer between your device and your PC. The technical name for this is “USB type A”. At the other end of the cord is either a USB type C connector (if you use an Android device) or an Apple Lightning connector (iOS).

If you have an Android device, try plugging your USB-A connector into your PC instead of the power outlet and see what happens (though, you might have to tell your device that you’re trying to connect to a PC; a prompt should come up on your homescreen).

An aside, what does USB stand for? Universal serial bus. You don’t need to remember that for any reason, though.

The biggest thing we use USB for is file storage. Those little USB sticks they sell at Office Depot expand the storage capability of your PC’s hard disk (main storage unit) by anywhere from 8 to 512 Gigabytes. These are called “flash drives” because they use a memory chip called “flash memory” (SD cards do the same thing). They can also be called “thumb drives” because they’re the size of your thumb. Or “USB drives” if you’re an ageing computer science professor.

We also use USB ports for keyboards, mice, MIDI controllers, detachable webcams, drawing tablets, or really anything at all.

To use a flash drive, all you have to do is plug it into a free USB port on your PC. Older PCs have most of their ports in the back, but newer ones have at least 2 ports in the front for easier access. Typically, you won’t need to do any more than this, because Windows is smart enough to know what a flash drive looks like and how it works.

In fact, a lot of USB devices don’t need to be installed or formatted; especially the basic ones, like keyboards, mice, and USB hard disks. Specialised devices, like MIDI controllers and webcams, may need to install device drivers, which usually come either on an optical disc packed in with the device or from the manufacturer’s website.

I dunno if you got anon complaints, but it wasn't me. Here's my wall of text about The Topic At Hand.

I hate Apple because every time I wanted to use my phone to do something in high school, I found out that sorry, you can't do that on an iPhone because we don't like [winzip, flash player, a bunch of other things] and you're not allowed to use programs that don't come from the App Store. Also if you jailbreak your phone so that you CAN use it as a miniature computer, you void your warranty uwu. Also, I had an iPod touch gen 3 that I still use despite it being a bit slow because they absolutely lasted forever. I also got an iPod touch 6 that died a long time ago, but before it did, the iPod/Phone 7 had been released and Apple had figured out that if they push an update that makes the old tech slow, people will go "ugh, this is so slow, I should get a new one".

When they released the iPad with the same issues as the early gen phones + also no USB port and I was like "why are people buying this instead of literally any other tablet?" but people acted like it was a new, innovative, never-before-seen amazing thing when the first iPad really was just a shit tablet you couldn't do much with, but it had an apple logo and angry birds.

We also had both Windows and Macintosh computers at my high school and I never had problems with Windows because it was what I knew, but any time I tried to use the macs, I'd run into all sorts of compatibility issues with files saved on the Windows computers, so I just used my laptop instead. I was also getting into computer nerdery and looking to build my own PC and found out that Macintosh computers come pre-built and if you change literally anything yourself you void your warranty, which pushed me even harder against the company and all of its products. Oh, and the fact that a global standardisation went through that every phone company would use micro USB and Apple weaselled out of it by saying "ah, but we don't sell phones, we sell Personal Mobile Devices." And that they hold patents for things like the liquid metal they use to paint on the logo and even the patent for ROUND PIZZA BOXES and refuse to let anyone else use them just. Because. What a shit company. Anyway.

Nowadays I understand that some people prefer to use Macs for things like graphic design because they're allegedly better at it??? but all I see is compatibility issues for days, overpriced tech that you're not allowed to breathe on without voiding your warranty, and people who fangirl over the company's products because they're 'hip' and for no other reason. Their old products WERE good, which is why old Macs and iPods still sell for a TON of money, but I haven't seen them release a good product in a long-ass time.

Hey that's totally fine.

For the record, in my mind, the part of Apple that makes iphones and ipads is a totally separate entity than the one that makes their computers. You'll get no argument from me about their stupid power adapter debacle.

I've had macbooks for years as my daily-driver computers, but I own literally one iOS product, and that's an old ipad mini wall-mounted in my kitchen for home automation purposes. iOS devices are annoying in my experience, and as such I've only ever had Android mobile devices for daily use.

... and don't get me started on what a shitty-ass product the Apple TV is.

I understand the compatibility and customization argument in precisely the way I understand the cats vs. dogs argument.

If you were raised with dogs and have never been around cats or only tangentially experienced cats, you might point at a cat and go "what is this animal even good for? It doesn't come when I call it. It doesn't respond to its name. You have to scoop out a gross litter box at least twice a week. It doesn't even chase a ball half the time!"

All of which would be correct observations about owning a cat, but if you were to pivot from that to say something like "cats are useless and expensive, and everyone who has one has been tricked by clever marketing and branding to get one" you'd get people looking at you a little funny. We intuitively understand that cats and dogs are fundamentally different pets to experience.

In the same way, if you're a PC user who points at a Mac and says things like you have above, like "You can't even change any components yourself! You can barely play any games with it!" you're making the cardinal mistake of bringing Windows expectations into a Mac world, just as you'd be bringing Dog expectations into a Cat world for being indignant that you can't play fetch with it.

.. by your own admission here, "I never had problems with Windows because it was what I knew"

There is a LOT of crossover between the platforms for day to day tasks (web-browsing, word-processing, using shit like Office 365, doing live-streams, Telegram/Discord, etc. etc.) just as there is a lot of crossover between activities that cats and dogs can do (companionship, snuggling, entertainment, taking cute pictures to send to your mom) but the niche stuff is where things branch off.

I have a purpose-built Windows PC for music production and audio engineering because I needed to configure a custom sound interface and Windows PC's are excellently tailored to customization. Conversely, I use my Macbook for video-editing because MacOS is extremely stable and I can count on one hand how many times it's actually crashed or hung in all the years I've video-edited on it, even though I occasionally have to use a dongle, and can't crack it open myself to put more RAM in it.

In the case of the latter I consider that a worthy trade-off, just as I will gladly trade-off having a pet that won't play fetch with me in exchange for not having to let it outside when the windchill is -20 in the middle of February.

As an aside, also, the MacOS terminal behaves nearly the same way as a Linux terminal, so there are all kinds of hardcore Linux computer geeks who use Macs because the logic underneath the OS is the same. Just this past weekend I used the terminal to disable a couple of annoying security bits so I could install homebrew, WINE and a few other pieces - all called up and installed automatically using nothing more sophisticated than an oldschool text terminal, just like a Unix or Linux machine. Then I used the automator to create a custom executed batch file so I wouldn't have to re-enter terminal commands every time I wanted to call up a specific procedure.

It's why I stopped listening to people who simultaneously complain about MacOS being "too dumbed down" and "too hard to use" in the same breath; it can be just as complex and nerdy as you want it to be, and it can be just as streamlined as anything else if you really want it to be. Sitting on top of "fancy Unix" also means it's crazy stable.

... so for me at least, it has nothing to do with being "hip" - I have a hardcover case on my macbook so you can't even tell what it is anyway unless I open it up - and everything to do with being a good old-fashioned pragmatist.

lightning’s an entertainment android, and as the name implies he was created to entertain humanity.

he’s a first generation robot of the fast track line: a set of androids created to do professional race car driving.

he’s not invincible, with his design trading in overall hardware durability and life expectancy for enhanced performance.

lightning can run on several kinds of energy: gasoline, most alternative fuels, and electricity. he’s had a recent upgrade that converts solar power too, but only when he has a specific panel built in his chest exposed to the sun.

his racing vehicle of choice is a 2006 custom built piston cup racing stock car. originally painted red, he repainted it in 2017 to be a dark blue.

lightning’s most notably won seven piston cups, but has also won several other championships for races inside and outside the US.

ABILITIES.

computer interfacing - when hooked up to any technological device (lightning is USB 3.0 capable!), lightning can navigate it much faster than a human. he can use devices normally (i.e. typing and using a mouse and looking at a monitor and all), but it’s a lot quicker if he’s plugged in. his USB port is at the tip of his left ring finger behind a sliding panel.

perpetual power - lightning doesn’t need to rest or sleep to recharge, technically. he may occasionally need to rest to cool down his internal temperatures and prevent overload if he’s strained himself physically, but sleep itself is unnecessary. lightning only goes into sleep mode to do daily diagnostics and routine file checking of his system.

superhuman capabilities - lightning is stronger, faster, and can take in more input than a normal human, more or less giving him “superhearing” and “supersight”. he can even see in the dark, but his optics glow when he activates it. his processing power also allows him to perform logical operations faster than the human brain, which helps a lot with racing.

scanning - as he’s built to entertain humans, lightning has rudimentary scanning functions that allow him to gauge the basic state of any human he’s talking to. temperature, heartrate, and an acute perception of their body language fall under this sphere.

multilingual - lightning can speak any language currently being used in the world as long as he has the language packs downloaded.

waterproofing - he’s waterproof, but cannot withstand extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold.

car interfacing - lightning is optimised to work best when he’s inside his designated race car and hooked up to it, with all his senses ramped up to maximum capacity as he borrows the car’s processing power. through his car and its satellite and wireless capabilities, he’s able to update himself with the latest fast track firmware available whenever he’s hooked up, and can also be reprogrammed using the computer built into it.

HISTORY.

montgomery mcqueen, then called “monty” by his creators, was one of the last few models created in his generation.

he was first owned by a nothing scent company named smell swell both to revitalise their sales and to introduce android tech to the racing scene.

as smell swell failed to improve, monty was later purchased by rust-eze, a company for rust and other decay-related removal substances, after a driver for the company first saw him race.

at mack’s-- the aforementioned truck driver’s-- suggestion, monty decided to go by “lightning” from then on, especially since rust-eze gave him full creative control over his image.

after winning plenty of races on small time circuits throughout 2005, lightning became the first android of the fast track line racing among humans in the nationwide piston cup of 2006.

an accident just before his last race of ‘06 had him getting lost on route 66, however, which led him to a small town named radiator springs.

in radiator springs, lightning had his first taste of freedom-- life beyond his programmed purpose to win races. he met a mix of humans and androids, most notably another android named hudson hornet: the first android ever to race on a track with humans and win three consecutive cups.

hudson, after much trials and tribulations, eventually ended up becoming his mentor in racing, as well as the chief of his pit crew.

lightning lost the piston cup of ‘06 after going back to help legendary racing champion, strip “the king” weathers, when the human got caught in a wreck. unbeknownst to him, this improved android acceptance among humans significantly.

following the piston cup of ‘06, rust-eze wrote in an addendum to lightning’s contract, allowing him to live in radiator springs off-season. between racing, his time in radiator springs allowed him to better understand humans and their customs.

after participating in the piston cup of ‘07, lightning finally emerged at the end of the season as champion. his groundbreaking victory thus started a trend of other companies creating racing androids to send in place of humans.

hudson hornet’s systems shut down beyond repair shortly after lightning’s championship win, leaving lightning devastated at the loss of his mentor. though he raced in the piston cup of ‘08-- renamed the hudson hornet memorial piston cup thereafter-- his performance suffered greatly.

his performance in the piston cup of ‘09 was much better in comparison.

in 2010, lightning had his first international competition in the first world grand prix. this launched his career further, allowing him to participate in other international races when he had time outside the american circuits.

for the next ten years, lightning continued racing annually, until the 2016 generation of machine racers left him struggling with his outdated technology. lightning found it near impossible to win against state of the art androids created to have symbiotic relationships with their cars; not only were he and his car separate entities, but his operating software was old, too.

during the piston cup of 2017, lightning eventually passed his torch to cruz ramirez, a newer generation android with much better performance than his. he also became her coach and chief of her crew pit.

though he continued to race in smaller circuits for a few more years after, he announced his official retirement in 2021.

these days, lightning occasionally joins local races throughout arizona, but for the most part the “bigger” parts of his career are over. lightning’s only intentions with huge racing circuits forevermore are in a coaching capacity for cruz-- at least until he shuts down beyond repair one day, too.

Punti Salienti Il nuovo altoparlante portatile Sony ULT Field 1 offre dimensioni e peso ridotti rispetto ad altri modelli della stessa categoria pur mantenendo un audio potente e di alta qualità. L'altoparlante misura 7,9 x 20,6 x 7,6 centimetri (altezza, larghezza, profondità) e pesa circa 635 grammi, disponibile nei colori nero, grigio, bianco sporco o arancione. La forma ricoperta di tessuto conferisce a questo speaker un aspetto accattivante e versatile. Simile al Sony SRS-XG300, presenta lievi restringimenti laterali che agevolano l'impugnatura. Gli estremi sono rivestiti in silicone per una presa confortevole. Sotto la griglia si notano un tweeter e un woofer frontali inclinati di 15 gradi che garantiscono un suono bilanciato. Dei radiatori passivi posti alle estremità diffondono i bassi ampliandone la potenza in modo uniforme. Include inoltre un robusto laccio per il trasporto. Purtroppo Sony non specifica le caratteristiche tecniche dei driver. Il Bluetooth 5.3 assicura connettività stabile, i codec AAC e SBC ottimizzano la qualità audio, la modalità multipunto consente di collegare più device in contemporanea. Grazie a Google Fast Pair l'accoppiamento è immediato. È possibile utilizzare due altoparlanti in modalità stereo collegandoli via app. Design e materiali Sul fianco superiore, ricoperto da silicone, si trova una serie di pulsanti tra cui accensione, accoppiamento Bluetooth, riproduzione, aumento volume, diminuzione volume e pulsante ULT. Il pulsante riproduzione risponde o termina anche le chiamate, oltre a navigare tra i brani a seconda della pressione ripetuta (due volte per avanti, tre per indietro). Il pulsante ULT, che presenta un effetto multicolore, funziona in modo diverso rispetto a quello sulle cuffie ULT Wear e gli altoparlanti ULT Field di dimensioni maggiori. Su questi dispositivi modifica diverse modalità con bassi potenziati, mentre sul Field 1 agisce semplicemente come interruttore per intensificare la risposta dei bassi. Sul retro, un coperchio a scatto protegge la porta USB-C per il cavetto di ricarica incluso da USB-A a USB-C. I pulsanti sono facili da usare e l'interfaccia è intuitiva. Un grado di protezione IP67 è ciò che mi aspetto da un altoparlante esterno. Il Field 1 è completamente antipolvere e può sopravvivere ad immersioni fino a un metro di profondità per 30 minuti, purché il coperchio posteriore sia ben chiuso. Ovviamente, l'audio Bluetooth non trasmette bene sotto acqua, ma il vantaggio di questa classificazione è che puoi tenere l'altoparlante vicino alla tua piscina o sul terrazzo senza problemi. L'ULT Field 1 dovrebbe durare circa 12 ore a volume al 50% e funzione ULT disattivata. Questa stima scende a sole 3 ore se si alza il volume al massimo e si attiva la funzione ULT. È un arco piuttosto ampio, quindi è meglio mantenere il volume a un livello ragionevole per ottenere il massimo tempo di riproduzione. Sony afferma che la batteria impiega circa 5 ore per ricaricarsi completamente. Applicazione Ho testato l'app Sony Music Center (disponibile per Android e iOS) con l'altoparlante Field 1. In cima alla pagina principale, appare l'indicatore della durata della batteria dell'altoparlante. Seguono tre sezioni: My Library, Music e Settings. La prima richiede l'accesso alla tua libreria musicale per poter visualizzare tutti i tuoi file locali nell'app. Nella parte superiore di questa sezione appaiono varie schede di navigazione, mentre i controlli di riproduzione e volume si trovano nella parte inferiore. Toccando il pulsante Music, si accede al lettore musicale predefinito. Sul mio iPhone, ad esempio, si apre Apple Music. La sezione Settings offre tre opzioni regolabili: Sound, Power Option e System. Toccando Sound, puoi scegliere tra Custom EQ, ULT Power Sound (questo attiva il pulsante ULT) o Off. La sezione Custom EQ permette solo regolazioni di base tramite gli slider per bassi, medi e alti. Puoi anche scegliere di dare priorità alla qualità del suono o alla stabilità della connessione. Seleziona Power Option per passare tra le modalità Stamina e Auto Standby. La prima non è disponibile se apporti modifiche alla sezione Sound, mentre la seconda causa lo spegnimento dell'altoparlante dopo 15 minuti di inattività. Toccando il pulsante System, si apre solo una schermata con il nome dell'altoparlante. Un secondo menu Impostazioni nell'angolo in alto a destra consente di regolare la funzione di spegnimento automatico, aggiungere app (puoi creare scorciatoie per Google Maps e YouTube), accedere agli avvisi di Sony, visualizzare la versione corrente del software e disabilitare le notifiche. Qualità del suono Ho messo alla prova l'altoparlante con la modalità ULT attivata e disattivata. La maggior parte delle persone preferirà tenerla accesa, dato che altrimenti i driver suonano piuttosto sottili. Si può provare a regolare l'equalizzatore dall'app, ma ho ottenuto bassi più corposi e alte frequenze più brillanti con la funzione ULT attiva. Con ciò in mente, l'ho lasciata abilitata per i test. In brani con un intenso contenuto di sub-bass, lo speaker offre dei bassi discreti per le sue dimensioni. Parlando del SRS-XE200, ho notato che il modulo Field 1 offre una maggiore definizione e un suono complessivamente migliore rispetto al modello precedente. Pensavo che il vecchio altoparlante suonasse spesso vago e sembrava mancare di chiarezza nelle frequenze medie. Tra le altre caratteristiche chiave per il profilo sonoro del Field 1 c'è il pulsante ULT. Aggiunge un ulteriore boost alle basse frequenze, simile al tasto dei bassi presente sui precedenti altoparlanti Sony. Funziona bene e conferisce all'altoparlante più piccolo una presenza corposa. Con il pulsante ULT disattivato, il suono tende ad essere troppo vuoto ad alti volumi per generi ricchi di bassi. È prevedibile, considerando che si tratta di un altoparlante da 130 euro. Il pulsante ULT si trova anche sulle nuove cuffie ULT Wear e sull'altoparlante ULT Field 7. Ma a differenza di questi dispositivi, il Field 1 ha solo un livello di "ULT-ness", anziché due come gli altri. Ancora una volta, essendo un altoparlante più piccolo, probabilmente uno è sufficiente. Ho lasciato il pulsante ULT attivato. Con il pulsante acceso, il suono è pieno. Dopo i primi giorni, mi sono ritrovato a lasciarlo acceso indipendentemente dalla musica che stavo ascoltando. Sebbene la funzionalità ULT fosse buona, odiavo gli effetti sonori che produceva quando veniva attivato o disattivato. Il rumore era troppo forte, durava troppo e era fastidioso. Non sembrava appropriato per nessun contesto. Vedere la luce ULT accendersi o spegnersi era un'indicazione più che sufficiente. Ho scoperto che l'altoparlante non aveva bisogno di essere impostato oltre il 30% del volume in una camera da letto o anche in un soggiorno di dimensioni moderate per produrre un buon suono. Si comportava bene anche in un ambiente esterno vicino a piscine o vasche idromassaggio. Conclusioni Il Sony ULT Field 1 non rivoluziona il concetto di altoparlante Bluetooth portatile, ma non commette neanche errori gravi. Ci sarebbe piaciuto che l'app fosse un po' più raffinata e che la batteria durasse più a lungo e si ricaricasse più velocemente. È abbastanza versatile per adattarsi a tutti i tipi di clima e produce un suono sufficientemente ampio da fornire musica di sottofondo per riunioni e feste.
