It’s the Independence Day of Finland (6th of December)! My homeland is 106 years now. I’m not sure if that’s little or not. I'm almost late to post this so I did it in a bit of a hurry, but here, as a small celebration, I wrote a short poem in Finnish and translated it into English for everyone else.
Under the cut!
Istun hiljaa, seesteinen tunnelma vallitsee
Tuuli humisee ja kuiva ilma polttaa
Talvi on armoton, talvi on täällä
Muttet sinä, vain halla minua saattaa
Taivas on sininen, maa on sininen
-Direct translation-
Night
The sun sets, the clock strikes three
The last rays of light fade away
Only the snowy ground is left
When the lamps behind windows go out
There’s a silhouette of the forest in the horizon
Can’t escape anywhere
With time you get used to it
And eventually begin to miss it
These memories, they’ll be buried with me
These poems, they’ll be left as my own history
These feelings, they’re here and now
These words, perhaps I’ll share them sometime for you
I sit quietly, serene ambiance prevails
The wind hums and dry air burns
Winter is merciless, winter is here
But not you, only frost guides me
The sky is blue, the ground is blue
The further you look, the bluer it is
But the closer you come and notice your mind
You notice that your core is the bluest
And sometime you'll return to this winter
And sometime I'll meet you again
And sometime all this cold will disappear
And sometime the snow will melt
And sometime the night shall not begin so early
